Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R

Hello dear readers,

Happy New Year to all!

Better Living & Marketplace would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the blessings & experiences this past year. As we set out to help expose the needs & good will of the people and organizations in our community we found an abundance of hope. I especially thank our readers & advertisers for taking action and reaching out to help in whatever way you could. I can assure you that you have made a great impact on supporting worthy causes in your own backyard. For me, I can say that the feeling deep in my heart of the joy given to help one another is the greatest gift of all. Now that we have come through the holidays let us focus on the New Year ahead. Most of us set out with a New Year resolution as we have the best of intentions to make a change for bettering ourselves. Sometimes we don’t live up to that expectation. I say, we can always start our new year over just as we can start our day over any time we set out to. I find being grateful for what I have instead of what I do not have makes all the difference for a good day or bad day, a good year or a bad year. There are some great tips from our Columnists, Joanne & Melissa. They are educated and inspirational professional women with a positive attitude and I encourage you to take advantage of their expertise. A few months ago I was contacted by Frank Panico, an interesting meeting followed. Our writer Armita Fucci has done a great job in portraying Frank’s controversial venture. Good food for thought. As God keeps supplying, we will keep sharing awareness of those in need and those who give. In this issue we are pleased to have met and publish another note worthy organization, Grace Way Village. No question, a need that St. Lucie County is amiss. If you are looking for more savings visit our new website: BetterLivingStLucieDeals.com It is mobile friendly too. Thank you to all our advertisers for being reputable quality businesses that serve St. Lucie. And we thank our readers for shopping locally and supporting our loyal advertisers. Last but not least, thank you to all who have contributed to the production of the Better Living & Marketplace Magazine. May 2014 be a healthy, joyful, prosperous and peaceful year to all of us! God Bless

Valerie Calabrese

What About

Skin, Nail & Hair Care

Digestion

Most think that digestion begins when the food they just ate hits their stomach. Actually, it begins the moment food is smelled or seen. Immediately, the mouth begins to salivate and the stomach begins producing acids to break down food. Digestion is very important; after all it is what the body uses for energy and cellular restoration. It may sound simple, but it is often complicated by lifestyle and foods choices and problems may be exacerbated by medications. Gas, indigestion and acid reflux are some of the more common digestion problems. This is where digestive enzymes come in. Enzymes are required to process and digest the food we eat, correctly, and allow us to restore and maintain our energy. They also absorb the nutrients from the food we eat, into the blood stream and allow for excretion. Enzymes are necessary for all living things and without them it would not be possible for life to exist.

Unfortunately, it is all too common for people to have a deficient amount of enzymes, causing them to be unable to digest certain food types. Have you ever experienced a gassy discomfort after consuming chili or a glass of milk? That is most likely due to the fact you are lacking the enzymes necessary to digest beans or dairy products. Need some help? Stop in to Nutrition S’Mart and allow our experienced staff to help you evaluate which enzymes can help you. We also have a licensed Nutritionist on staff available for free consultations; just call us at 772-323-2222 to schedule an appointment.

n a recent dreary, rainy Sunday afternoon, I stopped in Port St. Lucie’s new Bass Pro Shop and immediately felt cozy, warm and welcome. First, I walked past the Girl Scouts offering free gift wrapping. Then I encountered Marine Cpl. Nathaniel Wells cheerfully collecting Toys for Tots. The happy and helpful staff directed me next to their Winter

X’s

In The Sky

An interview with Frank Panico

A

sk Frank Xavier Panico if it’s cool to be an unabashed Christian, and you’ll get a resounding “YES!” In fact, Frank believes that the closer one gets to God, the more one’s uniqueness and beauty are brought to the surface, and the stronger one becomes . . . and that’s cool indeed. “It’s certainly not cool to be cruel to others and engage in destructive behavior,” Frank states. A former Hollywood actor, scriptwriter and model, Frank returned to his home town of Port St. Lucie in 2005 to be closer to his aging parents. (Editor’s note: Mr. Panico’s mother passed away in late November 2013.) He continued writing scripts and formed a production company, Xs in the Sky Films, committed to producing films with a Christian message. With invaluable help from editor and narrator Aaron Speros, Panico’s current film venture is Lambs Among Wolves, an edgy and at times controversial documentary in which Panico tackles the provocative question of whether God, Satan, spiritual warfare and evil exist in the world. “Evil might sound harsh, but there is no better word for it,” Panico says. Setting up his camera in various locales, from City Place to Stuart to Port St. Lucie, Panico randomly approached people and discovered no shortage of those willing to be interviewed on this thought-provoking issue. Frank understands that he is walking a fine line between fanaticism and faith. “I don’t want to scare anyone or freak anybody out. I just want to be sure people are not naïve about the dangerous evils around us.”

12

B E T T E R

L I V I N G

&

While acknowledging that there is no hardcore proof of Satan and that the existence of evil is hard to substantiate, Panico asserts that God’s help is all around us if we just look for it, citing the following example. In early 2010, preparing for a documentary on faith healing that he was about to undertake, Panico wrote to Pope Benedict, requesting an interview with him or an exorcism priest specializing in soul healing through faith . His church pastor tried to prepare him for disappointment, saying “Good luck with that!” But Frank didn’t give up hope despite not getting a timely reply. Forty-five days later, Father Jose Antonio Fortea, a priest specializing in demonic possession, exorcism and demonology from a Catholic perspective, visited several churches on the Treasure Coast during a lecture tour, and Frank had the opportunity to meet Father Fortea and ask pertinent questions on the subject of faith healing. Frank believes that his request to the Vatican was answered, albeit in a less direct way than he had expected. Frank Panico is preparing for his next project, a documentary with the working title of Driving Out the Wicked. It will focus on people who were once involved in satanic cults, witchcraft or astral projection, and have broken away and are now active Christians. If you have had such experiences and would like to be interviewed for the documentary, contact him at frankiepanico@aol.com. To learn more about Frank Panico, visit his website at www.xsintheskyfilms. com. Lambs Among Wolves can be viewed in its entirety at no cost by following the website’s YouTube link. Tired of being stereotyped as foolish, oldfashioned and not hip, Panico takes solace in his faith. “Being confident in your beliefs . . . now that’s cool.”

One Physician’s approach to modern medicine

PATIENTS & DOCTORS,

practicing medicine the old fashioned way

“Art is long; life is short; opportunity is fleeting; judgment is difficult; experience is deceitful.” - Hippocrates. Aphorisms

This quote attributed to Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, written about 400 years B.C. Remains vibrant and significant today as it was then. WHAT MAKES MODERN MEDICINE RELEVANT? When you think about great medical achievements of the modern age, comes to mind our profound advances in molecular understanding- analysis of DNA, amazingly complex testing, early detection of cancer, use of effective medications to allow a heart to beat stronger. Progress is exceptional. Yet, the more significant achievement is spelled in a much simpler way: KEEP MAKING PEOPLE HEALTHIER. This requires investment in a concept we call “continuityinspired medicine” to create an environment where people can request and receive a personalized care for their medical problems, from the patients initial concern, to being able to access a doctor in a timely manner, to receiving appropriate treatment; A PATIENT-PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP.

WHAT MAKES OUR PRACTICE RELEVANT? In our practice we strive to answer two questions every time: How can I help you feel better? How can I help you live longer? WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR DOCTOR? Interest in humanity (the secret of caring for patients is caring for patients). An attentive individual with honesty, enthusiasm, optimism. Respect people, healthy or ill, regardless of who they are. Support patients and their loved ones when and where they are needed. Promote health as well as treat disease. Embrace the power of information and communication technologies to support people with the best available information, while respecting their individual values and preferences. Always ask courteous questions, let people talk, and listen to them carefully. Give unbiased advice, let people participate actively in all decisions related to their health and health care. Assess each situation carefully, and help whatever the situation WHAT DO I OFFER TO OUR PATIENTS? A measure of compassion, curiosity and humility and the commitment in each encounter to give what they need that day as an offering of conversation, friendship and hope.

HOST A JEWELL BOUTIQUE! Share the latest trends with your friends, get a complete look and discover great gifts.

Here’s what our patients are saying: I have been going to doctor Siperstein for about five years now. I drive up from Stuart because doctor Siperstein is one of the kindest and most compassionate physicians I have ever discovered. When you’re in the exam room with Dr. Siperstein you feel like family and you’re the only person in the entire office. You never feel rushed and you’re always confident when you leave that the doctor’s diagnosis is correct. That’s proven it time by the success of the prescribed course of treatment. Dr. Siperstein’s staff is amazing, They always make you feel comfortable when you come in for your appointment. I would highly recommend Dr. Siperstein as your family doctor.” Bob Furman Stuart, FL As a health care worker in a hospital I would see Dr.Siperstein making rounds at all hours day and night. His concern and level of compassion touched my heart. I asked him if he was accepting new patients when he said yes I knew I found my doctor. Doctor Siperstein has a huge heart, gentle ears and makes me feel calm and safe. He makes you an active part of your own health care, part of the team. To others and me he is not only an amazing doctor but also true humanitarian. Carol Wood RN SLMC I would like to take some time to make knowledge how much I appreciate Dr. Siperstein. My late husband and I have been seeing Dr. Siperstein since 2002. We have been through many trials, tribulations and great challenges, including several cancers and diabetes. He has always been the one to be there when we needed him and was so comforting to me in my great loss. I will always feel he is the best position, totally professional and very competent, but most of all I will also think of him as my friend. With great appreciation,

dedicated volunteers and minimal staff. Their programs were developed after careful research that was done on current economic and geographical facts of The Treasure Coast. Having a vision, the focus was to provide tools and resources that are necessary to obtain financial stability and security.

Grace Way Village ~ truly has a heart for families. A Christ centered non-profit organization that has been meeting the needs of more than 1200 families in St Lucie County since the spring of 2010. Their dream existed long before this time. In 2006, 2 Presbyterian churches in Ft Pierce partnered to birth an outreach ministry that is quite unique and heartwarming. Not only do they provide for basic needs, they strive to equip under-resourced families to live in total mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and economic health. Grace Way Village recognizes the whole being of a person’s existence. In the entrance of 1 of the 2 buildings that the 8 acre property utilizes for their community programs, is

Grace Way Village partners with a host of other organizations within the community. Making it possible to expand and impact more families. To mention a few; The Treasure Coast Food Bank provides free or low cost food in support of Matthew’s Café, Which provides a free meal in a friendly atmosphere on Sunday evenings from 5-6pm.

Family shopping at Hopes Closet

Hope’s Closet 4 Children provides gently used clothing and new under garments for children age birth to 17. The Closet allows clients to shop for free in a boutique style setting. Several local businesses, including Wal-Mart and Old Navy donate to Hope’s Closet. The 3rd program that Grace Way Village offers is Getting Ahead in a Just Getting-by World; partnered with The Parent Academy of St. Lucie County. Clean up day

the world through the lens of an economic class. Each Getting Ahead class is composed of 15 sessions with the goal of helping people to assess their own resources, develop a detailed personal plan for their futures and a team of mentors to help them to take action and fulfill their dreams. Executive director Fred DiFruscio shared one man’s journey named Terry, who came to Grace Way Village over a year ago via bicycle homeless and hungry with no resources. His basic needs for food and clothing were met, but most important he needed to build a bridge to get out of this situation and not return. Terry completed the Getting Ahead program successfully and through business partners of Grace Way Village he gained employment, got an apartment and a car. Grace Way Village is truly the representation of the old saying; don’t just give those fish, teach them to fish for themselves. This philosophy changes our communities for the better. Terry is now able to give back and participates in events such as Service Day, planting trees that can grow strong on the ministry’s property. Grace Way Village is proud to be a United Way partner agency and also takes part the 2-1-1 service, the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County, the Treasure Coast Homeless Services, Bridges to Prosperity, St. Lucie Hunger Free Coalition. They recently had a TUTU K

Run to increase community awareness and raise funds for their outreach ministries. More volunteers are always needed.

Guest at Matthews Café

While there is currently no shelter in St Lucie county, it is the dream of Grace Way Village to someday offer phase 2 of their program to the community; a 20 unit-19,000 Sq. Ft. facility that would accommodate up to 20 homeless families during their time of transition, providing long-term housing (usually 12-18 months). I encourage everyone to get involved and support this outreach ministry and their dream. Remembering ~ it takes a village.

Juicing into 2014 By Joanne Augusto, owner of Nutrition World

Going into the holidays we tend to have too much of everything. Sugar, alcohol, processed foods (especially those Christmas cookies) and most of all stress. And of course there’s that common expression, too much of anything is not good! As I get older (and wiser, ha ha) I have noticed there is a concern about taking in too much supplementation and more recently nutrition from

To begin a juicing program please consider the following suggestions: • Purchase Organic or Locally grown produce • Use your produce up quickly (the fresher it is the better it tastes) • I wash my produce and scrub with a veggie brush so its ready to juice • If you can’t afford a high quality juicer consider a Nutri bullet. The drinks tend to be thick so you might want to add water and ice or strain some of the fiber. • During my cleanse, I did the blended drinks as well as juicing. • Consume 8oz per hour (some experts believe in a gallon a day) • Don’t forget to juice lemon and limes. I remove some of the skin so it is • not too bitter. • If you do not have time to juice early morning start your day with warm water and lemon • Get creative with your juices. Use fresh herbs; I loved having mint in my drinks! • Try to gets lots of fresh air. • Journal your experience • Use a rebounder or mini trampoline to move your lymph fluid • Use a dry skin brush twice a day. Use before showering. Great for circulation and detox • Sip on water between juices • Do not drink bottled juice. Only fresh pressed, blended or juiced • If in an emergency situation raw coconut water can be used ***If you have a poor diet you need to warm up. Usually three days of very clean eating is sufficient, with lots of fluids, tons of veggies and no sugar, dairy and flour. ***After stopping a cleanse you need to slowly introduce food in so you do not undo the progress you made juicing. I do find that theory strange considering so many people will consume a combination of medications, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors and processed food without question. I recently embarked on a juice cleanse and I was so surprised at how many people were concerned about how much I was juicing. Where were they when I was stuffing my face with pizza! I hope it is because they know how powerful and healing fruits and vegetables are. In just three days of juicing my energy is through the roof, my mind is clearer than it has been in months and my stomach feels sooo good. My annoying bumps on my arms also vanished. I am supplementing with probiotics, enzymes, spirulina and cell food. These are staples in my diet that I probably will take forever. I always try to do a program before suggesting it to others. Some people embarking on a juicing program experience a detox reaction or “healing crisis”. Please educate yourself on how much to juice and what is best for your body type. Or call me! Happy New Year

The Taste

by Armita Fucci

ROY’S SUSHI THAI & GRILL Roy’s Suhi Thai & Grill is the real deal of authentic Japanese and Thai cuisine. Overstuffed leather sofa seating and table dining make for a comfortable, eclectic setting. The wait staff is attentive and very knowledgeable, and the Thai chefs will accommodate special dietary requests. Owner Roy Seraphan’s Japanese and Thai cuisine includes classic, special and hand rolls, sushi and sashimi combination boats, bento boxes, Thai curries, vegetarian dishes, and a kid’s menu. Specialty dishes include the Thai Sampler (chicken satay, fried tofu, crab rangoons, steamed dumplings and shumai), and Pla Sam Rod (crispy fried grouper with sautéed vegetables and a triple flavor sweet and spicy sauce), and the Rock Tuna appetizer, a unique and mildly spicy dish of raw tuna, avocado and deep-fried tempura flakes. Other authentic dishes include Tom Kha, Tom Yum, and Pod Priew Wan among many others. A well-stocked bar features Thai, Japanese and Chinese beers, sake, domestic and international wines, and plum wines. Desserts of cheesecake tempura and fried ice cream round out of the menu. 1419 SW St. Lucie West Blvd. PSL 34986, 772-873-1124; www.roysushithaiandgrill.net. Mon-Sat 11-2:30 lunch, 4:30- 10 p.m. dinner. Sun-Thurs 4:30- 10 p.m. Fri/Sat 4:30- 11 p.m.

ROOSTERS DAYTIME CAFÉ & CLASSY CAKES If you’ve not heard of Roosters, blame it on the Jensen Beach locals who like keeping this gem to themselves. Owners/managers and sisters Tj and Carrol Ann serve up cooked-to-order breakfasts, lunches and baked goods in a warm and down-home atmosphere. Homemade corned beef hash, cast-iron open-faced frittatas, Western, Mexican and Greek omelets, challah bread or cinnamon & raisin French toast, and buttermilk pancakes will surely start your day off right. And here’s a bonus: each diner receives complimentary warm homemade crumb cake just like Mom used to make. Lunch includes freshly made egg, albacore tuna and chicken salads, French onion soup, homemade chili, triple-decker club sandwiches, paninis, NY-style grilled Rueben, and French dip. Burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches round out the fare. The variety of homemade cakes, pies, cookies and cupcakes are too numerous to mention and too delicious to pass up. Special dietary requests−such as egg whites, egg beaters, and gluten-free items−can be accommodated. A kid’s menu is also available. Roosters provides catering and baked goods for special events. 891 NE Jensen Beach Blvd., Jensen Beach 34957, 772-225-7750; www.roostersdaytimecafe.com Open 7 days, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Starting in January, dinner will be served M-F until 7 p.m. in season.

THE PIZZA HOUSE When it comes to real New York-style pizza, Brooklyn isn’t that far away after all. The Pizza House serves authentic Naples-inspired hand-tossed pizza, with a perfect blend of homemade light tomato sauce, the freshest mozzarella, and a tender yet crispy homemade crust, equal to New York’s best pizza. Specializing in take-out and free delivery, The Pizza House is a family affair with husband and wife Mark and Vera, son Michael, nephew Mark and family friend Robbie tossing dough, baking strombolis, taking orders and delivering top-quality fare throughout the area. They may be new to Port St. Lucie, but they have a 30-year history of making perfect pizzas, taking pride in using only the freshest, all-natural ingredients. Thick and thin pizza varieties include Sicilian, the popular pineapple-topped Hawaiian, White, White Spinach, Margarita, Pancetta Ranch, and their signature Grandma Gigi’s pizza. Or create your own from an assortment of toppings. Additional menu items include made-to-order strombolis and calzones, homemade meatballs and freshly baked garlic knots. Salads and antipasti are also offered, along with cold sub sandwiches and hot heros, including the popular Meatball Parmigiana. Lunch combo specials can be enjoyed at outdoor café tables. For dessert, choose from cannolis with homemade cream, Italian cookies direct from Brooklyn, and Leonardo’s Italian Ices. Beer, wine and soda are also available. 1352 SW Bayshore (off Crosstown Parkway), Port St. Lucie; 772-807-1181; www.thepizzahouse76.com; catering, including lasagna and manicotti trays, available for parties, school functions, and special events. Hours: 11 am−9 pm Monday−Thursday; 11 am−10 pm Friday−Saturday; 4pm−8pm Sunday in season

From the Inside Out A New Year’s Resolution By Melissa Brodzinski, owner of Skin Fitness Studios

According to Wikipedia, “A New Year’s resolution” is a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year.” We all make them on January 1st every single year and unfortunately by January 7th we have retreated back to our old habits. Statistics state that close to 88% of New Year’s Resolutions fail……. why?????? Most of our New Year’s Resolutions revolve around one thing in particular, our physical appearance…mainly our weight. That number on the scale haunts many of us. It is our obsession and our nemesis. Many of us live and die by the scale. What is our weight truly comprised of?? What determines how heavy we are?? Does it really even matter?? Our body is comprised of many things, bones, muscles, organs, fluids, and fat. Our weight fluctuates on a monthly, daily, sometimes, hourly basis determined by any number of factors. Hormones, Salt intake, Alcohol intake, and more all play a huge factor in what the scale says. What other goals can we set to determine a successful year of health and wellness instead of “losing weight”? As a trainer, I like to give people performance goals instead of weight loss goals. I ask them questions about their aspirations and goals. What have you always wanted to do? What do you see yourself achieving? These goals can be as simple as walking up a flight of stairs or as lofty as racing in their first triathlon. Either way, these are obtainable and measurable. The most important thing about these goals is that they take the focus off of what the body looks like and put it on what the

30

B E T T E R

body can achieve. This seems to be the key to success with my clients. The cold hard truth is we are really never satisfied with what we see in the mirror. That image is so distorted by the brain that even if we got to the ideal number on the scale we would still look in the mirror and long to be different. Real change is slow, and tedious, and never easy. It is however extremely rewarding to track and follow. The best changes are small and really invisible to the naked eye. These are the changes that happen in your attitude, self- confidence and perception of the world around you. Incorporating regular exercise and proper eating habits changes so much more than just your appearance, it changes your attitude. A person who takes the time to care about their body and learns to love and nurture it as a friend and not look at it as an enemy, is so much happier, and in turn, healthier. They begin to see life positively because they can move comfortably and participate actively in this beautiful gift we are given called life. Lasting changes begin with an attitude adjustment, plain and simple. Don’t give up this year. It is never too late to start anew. Nothing fantastic ever comes easy and there may be pitfalls along the way. SO WHAT!! WHO CARES??? No one is perfect. Start today. Change your life one beautiful minute at a time. Happy New Year!! Come and see me for a FREE consultation on a training plan for you. What are you waiting for??? Call today. 772-489-8364.
