Sunday, March 30th, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Put on your best tropical outfit to attend Floriday - a celebration to benefit Restoration House which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving people with life controlling problems like drug or alcohol abuse, illiteracy or poverty, the tools to re-enter society in a productive way. This festive fundraiser celebrating recovering lives will be held on Sunday, March 30th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at $100 per person. Suzanne Varn, Tonya Mills and Sally Chapman are co-chairs of the planning committee. This Floriday fundraiser will focus on the work and life of Don Blanding, the “Vagabond Poet” and author of the book “Floridays”. He was married to Dorothy Putnam in the 1940s and lived in Ft. Pierce. His work inspired Jimmy Buffet’s 1986 album Floridays. Dress will be Florida/Hawaiian with pineapple-inspired décor, food and Buffet music. The setting is on the grounds of a historic home in Fort Pierce where guests can mingle under graceful old oak trees or explore landscapes of lush plants native to Florida. “We are thrilled to welcome as our guest to Floriday 2014 the noted historian and biographer Thomas Markle. Tom will be reading poetry from Don Blanding’s “Floridays” book which was written in Ft. Pierce in 1941,” says Sally Chapman. A surprise event also awaits guests, courtesy of ART MUNDO, a school and gallery of regional art and artists located in the SunTrust building in Downtown Fort Pierce.

Restoration House, a 501(c)3 organization, is commemorating 16 years of restoring lives. Founded by Frances Watson and Mareya Schneider, Restoration House’s mission is to offer people with life controlling problems (drug or alcohol abuse, illiteracy or poverty) a way out. Their slogan is Redeem, Restore, and Release. Women and men find a new way of life and re-enter society as productive citizens through drug education, life skills training and employment. It is the only long-term (12 month) residential program of its kind in the surrounding five county Treasure Coast Region. Restoration House is licensed by the State of Florida through the Department of Children and Families and has staff licensed as clinical social workers, primary counselors and certified addiction professionals. The organization is a member of the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Foundation and is certified by Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. A trip to Port St. Lucie’s Bass Pro Shops on Gatlin Boulevard is not just another of your routine errands. There is just too much to see and do. For instance, as I pulled into the parking lot the Saturday before Super Bowl, my eyes were drawn skyward. The Florida Forestry Division’s helicopter was landing just a few yards away. The forestry personnel were anxious to show off their prize, used regularly in St. Lucie and the surrounding five counties for aerial wildfire suppression. The chainsaw sculptor nearby shared that this particular copter had been shot down twice in Vietnam but now has been completely and reliably rebuilt. Speaking of the chainsaw sculptor, his artwork is phenomenal. The demonstration of creating a sailfish from a seasoned log was nothing short of breathtaking. I then moved on to try my hand in the Daisy BB gun shooting range. Two of my three shots actually hit the paper. I’m no threat to burglars, but I was pleased regardless.

Heathcote Botanical Gardens I f you’re like me, you’ve seen the sign at Savannah Road a hundred times as you’re traveling northbound on US 1 in Ft. Pierce. And like me, you’ve probably said to yourself “I really have to go there sometime”. I finally did and am happy to report it was a most enlightening, educational and pleasant experience. Heathcote Botanical Gardens is an oasis of sensory and visual pleasures just waiting to be discovered, or perhaps rediscovered, by you. Open to the public since 1986, the five acre setting is continually changing and evolving – a truly living museum of native Florida trees, flowers and shrubs - and home to many exotic species. The story of Heathcote parallels the story of St. Lucie County and its twentieth century

development. The site was first developed by Mollie and Jim Crimmins who moved their Heathcote Nursery down to Savannah Road from Orange Avenue in 1960. Seven years later, they moved their charming residence to the Nursery from Delaware Avenue. The house was built in 1922 and is a marvelous example of Victorian Florida architecture, complete with a second floor piazza for catching a breath of ocean breeze.

In 1986 the Crimmins decided to retire and Heathcote Nursery, a non-for-profit organization, was purchased with funding from private donors, the City of Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie County, and the State of Florida. L I V I N G

Some of the Crimmins’ projects have survived to this day, including a terraced Japanese Garden. It now sports a stunning replica teahouse, compliments of an ambitious Eagle Scout, and continues to be the scene of many picturesque weddings. In 1986 the Crimmins decided to retire and Heathcote Nursery, a non-for-profit organization, was purchased with funding from

private donors, the City of Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie County, and the State of Florida.” Over the years, some of the special gardens opened include the Herb Garden, the Palm Walk, the Bamboo Trail, and the Rainforest. A particularly magical place is the Reflection Garden, a shaded hideaway with benches and a gurgling pool. It is the perfect place to spend a tranquil afternoon with a good book. And if you’re lucky, one of the Garden’s five resident “therapy” felines will join you on the bench for a little catnap. In 2009, one hundred tropical bonsai trees were given to Heathcote by Bonsai Master James J. Smith of Vero Beach. Mr. Smith is renowned for developing several bonsai from several tropical species, including the willow leaf ficus and the dwarf jade. Grant money was secured the next year to build a sensational Bonsai Gallery, where these creations can be viewed “in the round”. Each specimen is perched on a pedestal made of native capstone, harvested west of Okeechobee. Heathcote strived to use only native Florida materials in this exhibit. This particular exhibit is now considered the largest public collection of tropical bonsai in the entire country.

But people come and go and there is always a place for you, should you decide to join the ranks of the “Cohorts”. Fundraising is ongoing and constant at Heathcote, a necessary function of a private organization. One of their biggest annual events, the Bonsai Ball, will be held this year on March 29th. Over 200 attendees will be treated to a spectacular evening of “Culture and Fine Cuisine, Entertainment, Tours, Raffle and Live & Silent Auctions”. Tickets are still available.

For many years I have been telling people to increase their vegetable consumption, sometimes easier said than done.

Unfortunately for most other than the occasional corn and iceberg lettuce Americans consume very few vegetables. I remember when I went to school (too many years ago to mention LOL) they considered French fries a vegetable. The new government guidelines recommend an average of 3 cups of vegetables a day depending on your age and sex. I think it should be more, preferably 6 cups a day.

It is very easy to eat more vegetables. We have an amazing variety to satisfy any palate. If you are a veggie newbie start slow, even one tablespoon a day is better than none. If you need to mask the veggie taste with sweet fruits do so but keep in mind that you should try each week to cut back on the sugar (even if is from fruit). If I serve a sauce to my kids I always blend some organic kale and mix it in. Also the dark organic greens are so healthy you can feel a difference in your health with just a ¼ cup a day.
