Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R

Hello dear readers,

February has been a favorite month of mine since I was very young. Could it be because of Valentine’s Day? I just loved getting my chocolates in a pretty heart shaped box. Today, February reminds me of this scripture that I hold dear to my heart: “There are three things that will endure--Faith, hope, and love-and the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 It is no wonder that February is “National Wedding Month” and “American Heart Month”. In this issue we have added a special page “The Wedding Planner”, and we hope you find it helpful. My intention was to include an article on heart health this month. However God had a different plan. Jeanette Weiss, Vice President of the Roseanne Gregory Cancer Foundation, contacted me. While reading her content it occurred to me that this inspirational story is a matter of the heart. I identified deeply and I believe that many of you will as well. Thank you, Jeanette, for reaching out to us and for the work that you do. We are now very excited to share with you another columnist, Annette Robbins CEC, ELI~MP. “True Direction” is a powerful enhancement to our existing columns for good health and overall wellbeing. It is a pleasure to offer our readers positive influence. I am grateful to get to know Annette and I thank her for the enrichment she shares. Remember if you are looking for something good to eat, try out the restaurants that you will find in “The Taste”. Joanna Johnson has given insight on three restaurants that may interest you. There are many fun events going on this month. We have quite a list, including the St. Lucie County Fair. Take a look at what is happening in our community on our Events page. Why don’t you head out and try something new? This month we will be announcing the January issue’s winner of the Cornerstone Bistro gift certificate. Visit our Face book for the posting; www.facebook.com/BetterLivingandMarketplace Also, don’t forget to use our mobile ready coupon site: www.BetterLivingStLucieDeals.com. for even more convenient savings. Share it on your Face book, the site is available 24/7. Let’s all pitch in and support our local businesses. Until next month…

Blessings~

Valerie Calabrese

If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story.

One Physician’s approach to modern medicine

Patients&Doctors

practicing medicine the old fashioned way

“Art is long; life is short; opportunity is fleeting; judgment is difficult; experience is deceitful.”

WHAT MAKES OUR PRACTICE RELEVANT? In our practice we strive to answer two questions every time: How can I help you feel better? How can I help you live longer? WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR DOCTOR? Interest in humanity (the secret of caring for patients is caring for patients). An attentive individual with honesty, enthusiasm, optimism. Respect people, healthy or ill, regardless of who they are. Support patients and their loved ones when and where they are needed. Promote health as well as treat disease. Embrace the power of information and communication technologies to support people with the best available information, while respecting their individual values and preferences. Always ask courteous questions, let people talk, and listen to them carefully. Give unbiased advice, let people participate actively in all decisions related to their health and health care. Assess each situation carefully, and help whatever the situation

- Hippocrates. Aphorisms This quote attributed to Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, written about 400 years B.C. Remains vibrant and significant today as it was then. WHAT MAKES MODERN MEDICINE RELEVANT? When you think about great medical achievements of the modern age, comes to mind our profound advances in molecular understanding- analysis of DNA, amazingly complex testing, early detection of cancer, use of effective medications to allow a heart to beat stronger. Progress is exceptional. Yet, the more significant achievement is spelled in a much simpler way: KEEP MAKING PEOPLE HEALTHIER.

WHAT DO I OFFER TO OUR PATIENTS? A measure of compassion, curiosity and humility and the commitment in each encounter to give what they need that day as an offering of conversation, friendship and hope.

This requires investment in a concept we call “continuity-inspired medicine” to create an environment where people can request and receive a personalized care for their medical problems, from the patients initial concern, to being able to access a doctor in a timely manner, to receiving appropriate treatment; A PATIENT-PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP.

Who will get your vote for St Lucie County Judge? Leonard Villafranco

What are you looking for when you cast your vote? Residents of St Lucie County want and deserve good leaders. We need persons of integrity and maturity who is well-balanced in their personal and professional life. We need people who not only participate in the needs of the community they live in but also has the experience to serve. These are just a few of the characteristics our elected officials and candidates should exhibit. After meeting and speaking with Leonard S. Villafranco, I believe he is a candidate that you should consider in the upcoming election for St Lucie County Judge. His list of accolades is plenty and his personal journey deserves respect. After a successful non-legal career in the printing and publishing business, Mr. Villafranco fulfilled his lifelong dream by studying law in the evening, while working full time and raising his children as a single father. He received his Jurist Doctorate degree in 2001. He began his legal career defending litigants involved in serious accidents until he opened his own law practice, Leonard S. Villafranco, P.A., right here on the Treasure Coast. He is an experienced trial attorney, fighting for families going through divorce, custody and property disputes, defending the rights of those accused of crimes, litigating business disputes, and now prosecuting for litigants injured in serious accident, product liability and wrongful death cases. Leonard S. Villafranco is a member of the St. Lucie and Martin County Bar Associations, as well as the Port St. Lucie Bar Association where he served as Vice President in 2008/2009 and President in 2009/2010. He is the proud recipient of Recognition for Exceptional Pro Bono Service by the Florida Supreme Court, Florida Pro Bono Services Coordination Association in 2012, and the Pro Bono Service

Award given by Florida Rural Legal Services for 2009/2010. When I questioned his continuing Pro Bono work, he replied, “I love this community and this community has been good to me.” He believes that everyone deserves justice whether they can afford his services or not. While Mr. Villafranco is proud to say that he has been voted “Best Lawyer” in St. Lucie County by the readers of the Hometown News in 2012, more impressive is that he gives back not only to the legal community, but to the community at large. He serves on the board of directors for MISS, Inc. of the Treasure Coast. This is a non-profit organization providing housing and support services to homeless single mothers and their children. He also serves as chairman of the Park Committee for MISS, Inc., ensuring that these children have a safe place to play. He further supports the Sunrise Theatre in Ft. Pierce. This potential judge candidate believes in “fair play” and will fight within the rules of law. While he takes a non-partisan position, his goal is “to be fair” and follow the law. Mr. Villafranco further believes in various types of alternative dispute resolution where parties can come to their own amicable settlement of disputes. Mr. Villafranco resides in St. Lucie West with his fiance’, Tonya Sue Nilsen and his stepdaughter, Mary Elizabeth Carota. He is the proud father of his three children Nancy Elizabeth Sulzer, Michael Andrew Villafranco and Brittany Rose Villafranco, and his grandchildren, Olivia Patricia Sulzer and Logan Dennis Sulzer. Let’s do something good for St Lucie County and get this well-rounded, upstanding family and community oriented man on the ballot. Thank you Leonard Villafranco for your willingness to serve!

What would happen if you decided to treat yourself with the utmost respect and kindness?

Skin, Nail & Hair Care

TRUEdirection By Annett M. Robbins CEC, ELI~MP

How about starting today and making your own personal health and well being the absolute, non-negotiable, number one priority? How open would you be to start putting yourself first? This is a very short term experiment in which you direct all your time, energy and effort into self healing and preservation. A little internal research and even pampering. Totally still functioning as the Leader of the family... only making a commitment to focus on yourself first and let some of the family faculties fend for themselves? It may feel like a radical energy shift (it will be)...It may seem selfish (it’s not) or even impossible (so not true). It will take a conscious self awareness and commitment to this growing and healing process.

In 2007

Roseann Gregory, a wife, mother, daughter, and sister, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Throughout her battle she never questioned “why me” and never felt sorry for herself. Roseann worked with the mentally challenged prior to working as LPN at her local hospital. She was a great believer in positive thinking and instilled hope and inspiration to everyone around her.

“Roseann was a blessing. We hope all who share her heart through this foundation are blessed as well.”

After Roseann lost her battle with pancreatic cancer, her daughter, Anya Gregory, and her sister, Mary Melber, decided they wanted not only to keep her memory alive, but to honor her and help other cancer patients.

The Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation, Inc. promotes public education about cancer as a disease, the emotional adjustments for the patients and their families and cancer treatment techniques;

In 2011 The Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation, a 501 (C) 3 not for profit organization, was formed. Since then, the organization, with a small board of directors but a very large support community, has donated more than $35,000 to help local cancer patients and further the research of better treatments and an eventual cure for cancer of all types.

The Board of Directors of the RGCF include Mary Melber, President; Jeannette Weiss, VicePresident; Rita Markowitz, Treasurer; Darlene McNeal, Secretary; Danielle Visconte, Director; Dayna Izzo, Director; and Tammy Sutcliffe, Director. Members of the organization will continue to raise funds through events and volunteering, but are also looking for corporate contributions and grant opportunities. Funding will allow the RGCF to continue providing much needed services to those who are in need. Pictured is the Roseann Gregory CancerFoundation Board of Directors. Fundraising has become a critical component of the organization, but the members of the board insist that every event they host be fun for those attending. They have hosted black tie galas, a Monte Carlo themed evening, and wine tastings and have volunteered at other community events such as Fun, Feathers and Fashion and the New York Mets concession booths. With funds raised at these events, they have donated money to Martin Health Foundation & the HANDS Clinic St. Lucie County to assist local cancer patients, and to Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) Florida, an institute recognized worldwide for their work in finding better treatments for and a cure for cancer.

Caring for your Heart

By Joanne Augusto, owner of Nutrition World

Our poor little heart, just the size of our fist sure takes a beating. This twelve ounce organ beats 72 beats a minute and pumps five liters of blood per minute. Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Unfortunately each year more than 600,000 people die of heart disease.

Coronary heart disease is the most common form of heart disease. It occurs when the arteries that supply the blood to the heart become narrowed and hardened due to the buildup of plaque.

From the moment you walk into the sparkling and festive new establishment known NOW SERVING ST. LUCIE WEST as Uyde’s (pronounced ooo-WEE-dee) Sushi, you know you are in for a pleasurable dining experience. Located in Sandpiper Plaza on northbound U S 1, the restaurant only opened in midDecember of 2013.

(772)466-5007

Immediately upon being seated by the gracious Lisa, Uyde’s wife of 45 years, we were served a cup of delightful Sunomono Kani, or cucumber salad with crab, followed almost immediately by a cup of fresh and flavorful miso soup. It was hard to choose from the interesting and varied menu selections. But the teriyaki tuna could not be overlooked – and it did not disappoint. The entrée was heavenly, served in a perfectly Lunch guests Joanna Johnson & Valerie Calabrese prepared sauce. Lunch Bento (box) was our second choice, with beef, chicken, salmon, or veggie, and served with half California roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura and rice. Uyde learned his teriyaki/sushi skills during his ten years as the sushi chef at Benihana/Stuart. The restaurant has an elegant sushi bar and his menu features 22 special rolls, 11 makimono / temaki and 20 sushi varieties available by the piece.

DI MICHELLI’S CATERING AT THE LEGACY – PGA VILLAGE

For an elegant evening out, come experience DiMichelli’s at the Legacy Golf and Tennis Club in PGA Village. The menus vary nightly. One evening it may be ‘Italian Night’ with a do-it-yourself pasta bar, where the possibilities are endless. The next week may feature a more well-rounded menu of pork osso bucco, prime rib, poached salmon with choron sauce, or even filet Oscar with crabmeat and asparagus. The homemade soups and desserts such as Strawberry Sabayon and Crème Brulee complete an excellent meal. Juliann’s chef has worked with her for nine years; together they are dedicated to providing you with a memorable dining experience. Happy hour is from 5:00 pm to 6:00pm with ½ price drinks. Can’t make it for happy hour? Enjoy your first drink with dinner for ½ price. Valentine’s Day is upon us and what better place to share a romantic evening for two? Or perhaps consider DiMichelli’s Catering at The Legacy for your next special event – a wedding, graduation or landmark birthday. DiMichelli’s is open 7 days a week for lunch from 11am to 3pm. Dinner is served on Wednesday’s and Friday’s starting at 5 pm. Reservations are required for lunch and dinner. Call Juliann at (772) 528-7095 for more information or to be included on her email list for the weekly menus.

THE INN AT OCEAN VILLAGE The high ceiling with the rustic beams and the wall of windows overlooking the ocean set the scene for sunset dining at its best. Theresa and Mark Zollo, who also own Cornerstone Bistro on Becker Road, bring their flair for perky and savvy business management and scrumptious menu items with amazingly fresh ingredients to this latest location. The venue begs one to try the seafood entrees and they do not disappoint. The Sole Almandine was firm on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Macadamia Crusted Grouper with Mango sauce was a true delight. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. The apple cobbler was homemade and heavenly. The Sunset Dining menu is available from 4:30 to 6:00 Monday through Saturday and includes soup or salad, rolls, your choice of several savory entrees and a choice of three different desserts. Also included is a beer or a glass of the house wine (Copper Ridge) The entire meal is yours for under $20. Their new menu is now available, with a few new items and the resurrection of some old favorites. 2400 South Ocean Drive, Ft. From the Inside Out The Desire to Stay Young By Melissa Brodzinski, owner of Skin Fitness Studios

In an attempt to achieve a radiant complexion and avoid wrinkles, women are slathering their bodies with the latest anti-aging moisturizing cream. Although moisturizers can be somewhat helpful in improving the look and feel of our skin, the key to decreasing fine lines and improving our complexion is to decrease free radical damage from occurring at a rapid rate. In order to do this, we have to fill our diets with foods that are rich in antioxidants and that have anti-inflammatory properties and incorporate regular exercise. My top five anti-wrinkle foods that will help promote the look and feel of your skin are: Blueberries, Omega-3 eggs, Tomatoes, Sunflower seeds, Fish oils. In addition to the foods mentioned above, to improve the texture of your skin and reduce fine lines, make sure your system is properly hydrated. Minimize dehydrators such as alcohol and coffee and substitute a minimum of 6 to 8 glasses of distilled water or herbal tea daily. Exercise offers a number of benefits for your skin, and should be considered an important part of any skin care regimen. So add a vibrant complexion to good health and a toned body when you reviewing your reasons for getting in a daily workout. 5 Ways Working Out Benefits Your Skin Beyond heart health and bone building, exercise has a positive effect on your skin’s appearance, too. Here’s why: 1.Exercise makes you sweat. Sweat purges your body of toxins that can clog pores and plague your skin with blemishes 2. Exercise tones your muscles. The more toned you are beneath your skin, the healthier your skin will look and feel. The stronger and firmer your muscles are the more support your skin will have, and the more firm and elastic it will appear. Toning

your muscles may also help to minimize the appearance of cellulite, the dimply fat that often strikes thighs and buttocks. You can’t exercise cellulite away, but you can help it look better. 3. Exercise boosts oxygen and blood flow to the skin. Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts blood flow enough in type 2 diabetics to help reduce the risk of skin problems that lead to amputation. Exercise gets the blood flowing, and that increased blood flow carries more oxygen to the skin. The boost in blood flow and oxygen to the skin cells also carries nutrients that improve skin health, supporting all the effort you make with moisturizers and other skin care products on the skin surface. 4. Exercise eases stress. Exercise has long been known as a great way to relieve stress. Those mind-body benefits may extend to your complexion. Though studies are small, some show that stress may worsen, if not actually trigger, acne. Stress may also trigger flare-ups of psoriasis. It’s known to boost hormone production and suppress the body’s ability to heal, but regular workouts can keep stress — and possibly hard-to-manage skin conditions — under control. When you’re feeling tense, let exercise keep any frown lines at bay, too. 5. Exercise gives your complexion a beautiful, natural glow. When you exercise, your skin begins to produce more of its natural oils that help skin look supple and healthy. While that can naturally moisturize skin, remember to cleanse your face gently as part of your skin care routine when you shower to prevent any breakouts. Most important Your body does not have a voice. The way it talks to you is through symptoms. Pay attention to the health of your skin -- it is a good indicator of what is going on inside. With the proper food, water, and regular exercise you can turn back the clock on your skin and look ten years younger!
