When they discover a mysterious glowing, apparently sentient, orb in the lake, Kim doesn’t have a good feeling about it. Bravepaw and the Heartstone of Alluria | L.M. Wilkinson | $16.99 | Allen & Unwin | 8+
Up on the Plateau, the mouse Titch yearns for adventure, a break from the monotony of puffling herding and damson plums. However, The arrival of a strange rabbit, hounded by writhing and horrifying shadow-eels, a chain of events launches that threaten not only the peace of the Plateau, but the safety of all of Alluria. I loved Bravepaw, and particularly the character of Titch, who, despite her dreams of adventure, struggles with self-doubt, and what it actually means to be brave. Bravepaw is a fantastic new fantasy novel that promises to kick off a great series - think Redwall, but for a younger audience.

The Invocations | Krystal Sutherland | $24.99 | Penguin | 13+
Krystal Sutherland, author of House of Hollow, has done it again with The Invocations, a haunting murder mystery thriller crossed with the supernatural unlike any other YA I’ve read! It’s centred around the found family of three young women, one a witch, one cursed by a demon, and one investigating the occult after the brutal death of her sister. Embracing the Gothic and body horror with its visceral and grotesque descriptions of natural decay and the monsters that live within us, part of the enchantment of this novel is the atmosphere that creeps under your skin the further you go. Full of uncanny and unexpected twists and turns, The Invocations will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final word and leave you wrapped up in its tangled roots long after.

JUNE BOOK OF THE MONTH
| Carolina’s Review | 14+
I’m a sucker for a YA dystopian fantasy with a strong heroine. With rich worldbuilding inspired by First Nations culture, Liar’s Test ticks all the boxes and then some. Bell Silverleaf – the heroine in question – has been held captive by the sun priests and moon sisters of the Risen since she was eleven. Survival hasn’t been easy for Bell or the other Treesingers after their home was invaded by the Risen and their gods over a century ago. Now, after years in captivity, Bell has been selected to compete in the deadly Queen’s Test to decide who rules for the next twenty-five years. With the crown comes the power to secure the freedom of the Treesingers, yet all is not as it seems. The ensuing narrative is epic, fast-paced, and laced with many twists and turns. Plus, it ticks the romance box which doesn’t hurt!
JULY BOOK OF THE MONTH
Arabella | Carmel Bird & Jace Rogers | $25.00 | Peribo | Robert’s Review | 4+

The beautiful whimsy of Jace Rogers’ ink and brush illustrations work so joyously with Carmel Bird’s prose as they guide the reader on tip-toe following the words like stepping stones as we watch the timid and shy Arabella awaken to something new with the arrival of the bodacious and charming George. There maybe a little Arabella in all of us awaiting to embrace the world by listening to that part of us that is pure George.

Chronicles of a Lizard Nobody | Patrick Ness | $16.99 | Walker | Lexie’s Review | 9+
Life is a bit tough for Zeke. He’s just been made hall monitor (possibly because he’s a monitor lizard), Pelicarnassus has it out for him, and due to an unfortunate family instance a century or two ago…. France is located on his knee.Zeke and his fellow monitor lizards/hall monitors must band together with Miel the Hawk to overthrow Pelicarnassus (current school bully and supervillain in the making) to both save their school from being destroyed and stop other animals from calling each other mean names. Chronicles of a Lizard Nobody was wonderfully illustrated, delightfully funny, and had me googling different types of hawks- Miel is definitely the standout character. I absolutely loved it, and hope that there is a sequel to find out what happens next.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
6+
Come and meet Hazel who’s nine, Poky who is a feelings echidna, (which means he changes colour depending how Hazel is feeling), Odette a pademelon, Walter a grumpy wombat and Tiny a honey possum, so tiny she travels by pocket. This delightful band of friends all live together in a Treehouse and this is their first book. Each chapter is a day in the life of Hazel and her friends and each has something to solve or something to share, like if you’re feeling in the clums? Why not write a list of 15 cheery things. I have been a fan of Zanni Louise for sometime and this, paired with the gorgeous illustrations of Judy Watson is a future classic and must have for any small person’s library. It is quintessentially Australian but infused with Winnie the Pooh and Gumnut vibes.
