1|NOT JUST PASSING THROUGH, MIGRANTS IN THE CITY. TWO CASES IN TURIN A.Y 2016-2017 Tutor: Cristina Bianchetti
A WORLD AT WAR The so called “Refugee crisis” that has recently stricken Europe is a current issue which importance is evident since it agglomerates a series of factors that modify the configurations of territories and generate a geography by its own. A mass migration flux of people characterized by the heterogeneity of its composition (all considered as “forced migrants”), and a remarkable political discrepancy. The reference name then remains just an emblem of the critical state of its emergencial character. Irregular mass migration, in the broader scenario of political and economic crisis, is the structural issue regarding the phenomenon.

NOT JUST PASSING THROUGH This research deals with this recent phenomenon as an imperative issue that it is changing the European territory, which strong impact on the territory involves urban planning, architecture; urban studies in general. Within the framework of territories in crisis, the aim of this thesis is to look at the radical conditions of mutation of population and urban spaces, through the analysis of some of the informal manifestations of the forced migration phenomenon in the city, to observe the metamorphosis of the territory and understand what the implications could be for the discipline.

March 2013, about two hundred refugees from North Africa emergency occupy some of the Ex-Moi buildings or the Olympic Village in Turin. Occupying the apartments and rooms that were once of the greatest athletes from all over the world during the Olympic Games in Torino 2006. The occupation is in one of the southern part of Turin, in the Lingotto district, an area that once was the industrial core of Turin. The occupied buildings are in bad conditions; several structural problems such as water pouring from ceilings , lack of electricity, hot water and heating system, make everyday life challenging.

In Saluzzo, the influx of migrants’ laborers began in 2009, with a presence almost unnoticeable. But, by 2011 the arrivals where near to two hundred and in 2012, the situation appeared even more critical, because now the seasonal workers were almost four hundred. With the intervention of NGOs organizations it was possible to provide around 200 accommodations in nearby building own by the municipality. Nevertheless, the number of those who were left without any accommodation is unknown, but impressive: probably 400 or 500 people, who were sleeping under plastic sheets or in cardboard shacks without sanitary services.

2|THE PUBLIC WALL: CITTA’ DELLA SALUTE. TURIN, IT A.Y. 2015-2016 Design Unit: “Architectural and Structure form”
The project for the master plan of the Ex-Fiat Avio Factory envisions a new complex for the “Cittá Della Salute”, with a particular attention towards the idea of the Tower or Sky-scrapper; understanding the strong traditional image of the area and the context. The idea of the master plan is to “Re-sew” the urban fabric that vanished by the void left by the previews factory (embarked on industrialization), through a contemporary use of the scheme of the traditional courtyard block. The encounter of the traditional and the contemporary city is reflected in the proposed tower. In addition, seeking for a less dependent vehicle society, the plan seeks to reinforce pedestrian connections and offer more public space for the community. following The Program the concept is divided into two parts - a public/common part, which represented the “public wall”, and the private program, where the required program is developed - with offices, research center, and hotel.
3|COMMUNITY CENTER IN CHENGDU, CHINA A.Y. 2014-2015 Design Unit: “Architecture and Urban Spaces
The Design unit explored the issue of the quality of collective places in large-scale urbanization proecesses. The city og Chengdu, where the project is developed, lives a historical duality between the rural and the urban; the struggel between traditional facets and modernisation. Now a days it is very common find developing cities of Eastern countries trying to imitate the great modern centers of the West. The project is part of a master plan that attempts to bring through contemporary design the values of some historical aspects, finding harmony behind contrasting aspects such as tradition and globalization. It aims to the understanding of the local needs of the inhabitants and in particular to respect the local traditions. The perception of the lifestyles and public spaces have changed in recent times, nevertheless the scope behind the design it is to deal with intersocial issues, creating spaces that are diaphanous to be suitable for everyone.
4| INTENSIFYING PERIPHERIES, TARANTO RESIDENCES. TURIN, IT A.Y. 2014-2015 Design Unit: “Architecture and Construction Systems”
One of the main issues of today’s cities is the densification thereof, especially in peripheral areas. In a satellite district built in the fifties with grass courtyards for community activities and shared services in common areas between the residential blocks, the study focused on five low-cost housing blocks by “Corso Taranto” street, displayed in a large stripe of intervals of large green areas without use and buildings. The project is based upon the assumption that the employment of mechanisms for intense use of land and proximity and the correlation with the increases in land growth and last but not least, the creation of ghetto districts that resulted not only from the actual physical distance from the centre but also and above all from the almost total absence of primary services. Analysing this distric of the city of Turin, a very recognizible and characteristic sector that exert the influences over the way in which people assamble in cities. The aim was to revive the sector and to solve the land use problem while conserving the limelight of the main green areas, inserting 4 small blocks of new housing typology and connecting it to the context through mixed use areas.
5|POLYFUNCTIONAL CENTER. BARQUISIMETO, VE A.Y. 2013-2014 Design Unit: “Centripetal spaces”
In this design unit we explore the consequences of the urban proliferation of residential areas, which are located within the city but separated in some way from the rest of the city. The study area is the result of the residential urban developments carried out in 60’s and 70’s to accommodate the massive increase in the population due to the industrial growth of the city. Given the configuration of the area, which is surrounded by main and secondary roads, it is perceived as an area within the city but with limited connections to the equipments in the surroundings. The building serves as a community center for people from nearby residential areas but also fulfills the objective of offering larger scale services for the city. In this way, a balanced suture with the exterior is attempted that can balance the connections and revive the area, attracting different activities and users. Therefore, the uses offered vary to target local residents to a larger scales citizens. Through public presentations, talks and meetings we were able to establish a close relationship with the community, understanding accurately the local needs of the area.
6|FILLING THE GAP. BARQUISIMETO, VE A.Y. 2013-2014 Design Unit: “Building in the urban”
Valle hondo is a residential area of Cabudare, characterized by the predominant presence of the gated communities that fragment and limit the area, in addition this characteristic extends through the majority of the territory of Cabudare. The communities, originally conceived as transitable and open communities, were closed mainly for reasons of insecurity. The area ends up being impassable vehicularly but also pedestrianly due to the barriers created between the communities. The project is located in an empty lot that backs up to gated communities and is separated by a channel of water and electricity pylons. The objective is to explore how these vacant spaces in the city can become proliferators of activities to rehabilitate the city. The challenge was to occupy such a characteristic lot with it’s complicated elements; the water channel and the electrical towers, to integrate it with the livability of surrounding spaces. The design process intended to agglomerate the urban scale (zoning) with the development of the buildings to a detailed scale. Riots, insecurity, the illegitimate government didn’t allow us to continue the project. Therefore, such scale of the buildings was not achieved.
7|MODULAR INTERLOCKING SYSTEM P.E. 2018-2020 @ Heritage
From a concept through to a physical, three-dimensional exhibition, exhibit design integrates the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, audiovisual engineering, digital media, lighting, interior design, to create an experience that will resonate with diverse audiences–enabling these targeted audiences to access
the messages, stories and objects of an exhibit.
Through the use of acute modular techniques, smart simple design is delivered with the aim of developing communicative environments that enable the potential for trade, display, networking, relation building. Ranging from different scales, the design process engages in delivering an effective, fast, cost efficient atmospheric design. The use of modular interlocking systems is key in order to achieve the foregoing.
