Our brilliant borough truly is one of the best places to love and enjoy later life. There is a huge support network in Bexley, as well as lots of events, activities and volunteering opportunities from which older residents can benefit. Our Ageing Well strategy focuses on the areas that we know are of concern to older residents. These include tackling loneliness, enjoying life at home and keeping active and healthy. Our event and this magazine brings together information under these key headings so that you can find out more about what’s on offer locally. I hope that you will find this magazine useful and that you will come along to the ‘Ageing Well’ event to help make it just as popular as it was last year. I look forward to seeing you there.

#doitforbexley Our #doitforbexley initiative is all about the many people of all ages across the borough who help themselves and others to enjoy a better life.

Keith said: “I really wanted to give something back to my local community, but also get into the outdoors after being stuck behind a desk for so long.

It may be in big and small ways, taking a few minutes or hours, or a day a week. It may be on your own, by helping a local voluntary group or charity, supporting your local shops or taking part in community events.

“Volunteering has helped me to learn new skills, meet new people and lead a healthier and happier life.”

Keith Langley is a Lesnes Abbey Volunteer. He has been volunteering for the past year having retired from 45 years of office work.

New walking app Be Blue Badge aware BexleyWalks is a new free mobile phone app designed to help residents and visitors find out more about some of Bexley’s hidden treasures. It provides guided walks that include maps, interesting facts and images. It currently has three routes which take around an hour to complete - ‘Bexley Village’, ‘Bygone Bexleyheath’ and ‘Erith Riverside’ - with more coming soon.

Blue Badge holders and anyone driving on their behalf should be aware of the scheme’s rules. Badge misuse is a criminal offence which could lead to confiscation of the badge, prosecution, and a fine of up to £1,000. Blue Badge holders must never allow friends or relatives to use the badge to run an errand or go shopping on their behalf. Nor should the badge holder wait in the car – this could prevent another badge holder from using the space.

The badge should only be displayed if the badge holder is travelling in the vehicle as a driver or passenger, or when parking to pick up or drop off the badge holder. For more information, handy hints and tips visit www.bexley.gov.uk/ bebluebadgeaware

Download BexleyWalks for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Free stop smoking support Trying to quit smoking without any treatment or support is extremely hard – which is why so many people remain addicted. Smokers do not generally age well: one in two smokers will be affected by chronic health problems or dying prematurely. If you’re registered with a Bexley GP and would like to finally stub out smoking from your life, speak to Bexley’s awarding-winning Stop Smoking team.

See the team at the Ageing Well event for a free Carbon Monoxide screening and information on how to access its free treatment and support programme! See page 10

Bexley’s Stop Smoking service has the highest success rate in London. The team can make you an appointment to attend one of the borough’s 16 local clinics held throughout the week. Join the thousands of local people who have quit smoking with help from the team and add years to your life.

Being Healthy and ACtive

Stay well this winter Bexley residents aged 65+ are urged to get a free flu jab to help them stay well this winter. Even if you’ve had the flu jab before, it’s important to get it again because the type of virus in circulation changes every year - and so does the vaccine.

Flu occurs yearly and is a highly infectious virus, with symptoms that come on very quickly. A bad bout of flu can be much worse than a heavy cold. The most common symptoms are fever, chills, headache, aches and pains in the joints and muscles and extreme tiredness. Human immune defences weaken with age, putting older people at greater risk of serious complications. Healthy individuals usually recover within two to seven days, but for some, the virus can lead to hospitalisation, permanent disability or even death. Speak to your pharmacist or Bexley GP now about getting vaccinated. For more information about the flu jab, please visit www.nhs.uk

Planning for the future

Learning not lonely Did you know that one of the UK’s leading charities for retired and semi-retired people has released new research that shows learning together can help combat loneliness and is good for your health and wellbeing? Have you heard of the University of the Third Age (U3A)? It’s a cooperative movement of people in the third stage of their lives who come together – in individual U3As around the UK - to continue their educational, social and creative interests in a sociable environment. And there’s a U3A in Bexley! It currently has over 55 interest groups covering a wide variety of activities, including everything from art appreciation, gardening, local history and Photoshop to crafts and jazz. U3A Bexley Chairman, Sandra Goulding said: “This is just a taster of the groups on offer. If you fancy learning something that is not currently covered, there’s lots of support to help you get together with some like-minded U3A members and start your own group! We also have monthly meetings in Bexleyheath Broadway – always with interesting speakers.” To join costs just £12 a year. To find out more please email dandare49@hotmail.com or visit www.u3a.org.uk

Support for carers Did you know that there are around 23,522 people in Bexley who provide unpaid care for a husband, wife, parent, son, daughter, sibling or other family member, or a friend who is sick or disabled? Quite a large proportion are older people themselves, or are caring for an older person. Many do not think of themselves as carers. They are just getting on with it: doing what they have to do, because if they didn’t do it, who would? It is too easy to spend all your time and energy on the person you are caring for and forget about your own needs. Many carers end up with their own health problems because of the stress of caring.

If you are a carer, it is really important that you look after yourself and make sure that you get support too. Carers’ Support Bexley is a charity set up by and for Bexley Carers that can provide you with support should you need it. Call 020 8302 8011 or email info@carerssupport.org to find out what support is available or visit www.carerssupport.org

Enjoying life at home

Keeping safe from fire Every year in London, people die or are seriously injured as a result of a fire in their homes. To reduce the risk of fires starting, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) carries out home fire safety visits (HFSV) to educate people in their own homes about-: Prevention – Find where fire risks in the home lie and provide advice on how to reduce or eliminate them. Detection - You are more than twice as likely to die in a fire if you don’t have working smoke alarms. LFB will identify your needs and select, site and install appropriate smoke alarms, including alarms specially designed for deaf and hard of hearing people. Escape - Provide a personalised escape plan, tailored to a resident’s ability and to the circumstances of their environment. LFB strongly recommend a HFSV for anyone who smokes, has reduced mobility or is prone to falls, dementia, has no smoke alarm, is in receipt of care or uses devices such as airflow mattresses, therapeutic oxygen, emollient creams or incontinence products, all of which can contribute to the spread and intensity of a fire. To request a HFSV please visit www.london-fire.gov.uk/safety/ the-home/book-a-home-fire-safety-visit or call 0800 028 4428

Community Support

Support for former service personnel The Soldiers Sailors Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) has been helping former service personnel for over 125 years. Last year, SSAFA helped more than 50,000 ex-service men, women and their families. Its caseworkers are trained to visit, befriend and search for funds to support those who have served our country and are now facing problems. Whilst SSAFA’s work with wounded servicemen often hits the headlines, in Bexley SSAFA are often helping older people and those who are frail.

Anyone who has given at least one day’s service is entitled to a lifetime of support from SSAFA, including past and current members of all our Armed Forces, the Reserve Forces and National Service and to widows and widowers. SSAFA are also a registered adoption agency, provide holidays

for children with extra needs and has its own confidential support line. It also provides first class training to anyone wishing to volunteer. For more information contact the Bexley Branch on 020 8 639 0495 or email LondonSE. Branch@ssafa.org.uk

It brings local people together and can make a real contribution to improving their lives. The activity of Watch members can foster a new community spirit and a belief in the community’s ability to tackle problems. At the same time, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours are keeping an eye on your neighbourhood. If you’re retired or have some spare time, why not consider becoming a volunteer Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator? Taking as little or as much time as you want, joining can help you to get to know the residents

in your area and help more vulnerable residents to feel a part of the community again. You’ll pass on any information about suspicious activity in Bexley and will also become familiar with crime prevention ideas, helping you to keep your home and belongings safe. You will receive support from Neighbourhood Watch, weekly Crime Reports by Ward and seasonal newsletters keeping you informed of current crime trends, as well as other local issues and events in Bexley. Choose your own resting place With the passing of time London is losing more and more of its green spaces to meet the demand of housing its ever growing population. However, at some point in the future this growing population will be in need of burial and memorial spaces for their loved ones. As cemeteries around London become increasingly full it becomes more difficult for families to ‘plan ahead’. The London Boroughs of Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Bromley are no different from the other local authorities. The choice of buying a grave or a memorial in advance within those Boroughs is limited. However, private cemeteries and memorial gardens are a breath of fresh air. At private cemeteries and memorial gardens like Kemnal Park not only can you purchase a grave or cremated remains memorial when you are in need you can pre-purchase your choice of burial plot or memorial options by planning ahead. These burial and memorial options can be pre purchased for a range

of lease periods. Some options like Private Gardens, Gated Gardens, Mausoleums, Cremated Remains Gardens etc. are available to purchase with a lease for the ‘life of the park’. These burial options are not only a solution for your future, but the future of your generations to come. Pre-planning your ultimate resting place is not only a wise way to manage your assets, it also protects your family from the burden of heavy funeral bills at an emotionally challenging time. While it is hard to find a pre-purchase burial or memorial option within Greater London, Kemnal Park not only provides various pre-purchase options, but also offers a payment plan to help families to pay for their chosen pre-purchase option over a set period. If you are thinking, ‘but I don’t live within the London Borough of Bromley!’, you’ll be relieved to know that no matter where you live in the UK, there is no cross borough charge at Kemnal Park.
