hen you are commissioned to do a fashion photography spread, the idea or theme would normally be given by the editor of the magazine for a particular issue. The brief may simply be one word or a whole concept. You discuss the brief with the art director or editor as to how it should be interpreted. At this stage, you determine the feel you want the photographs to have, such as, do you want the viewer to be excited, or calm, to feel sad or happy, The stylist is the person who gets the clothes and she contributes greatly to the development of the idea. Her work is to acquire the latest possible fashion clothes that are suitable for the brief. The magazine would want the stylist to acquire clothes from famous brand names, as it would have more prestige in the eyes of its readers. Personally, I do not really mind what
Casting of the model is most essential as it is the main factor that determines the feel of the pictures, no matter where and what clothes she will be wearing. The model defines who you are as a photographer and has a person. You are making a statement if you choose a voluptuous or thin model, tall or short, intellectual or not so intellectual. An Open Letter From an “Alpha Woman Unable to Love” I used to think I was a confident woman who stood up for herself and also happened to be single. Then I read this excerpt, “Society is creating a new crop of alpha women who are unable to love,” from Suzanne Venker’s upcoming book The Alpha Female’s Guide to Men & Marriage on foxnews.com, and reader, I have seen the light.
V
enker’s thesis is that marriages don’t work when one partner—namely the woman—is demanding, unyielding, and unable to be pleased by anything the other partner does. And sure, “Don’t be an asshole to your spouse” might seem like a basic tenet of marriage, but as Venker explains, this is actually a big problem with our current generation that needs to be addressed right now. Why? Because “women having been groomed to be leaders rather than to be wives.” Those leadership qualities—like being bossy and demanding, which will definitely help you get ahead in the office— are apparently antithetical to the three things that, Venker says, make a good marriage: respect, compromise, and sex. But of course! You might be thinking, Wait, it’s totally possible for a woman to be both a leader and a wife! But please trust Ms. Venker when she says it is absolutely not. This attitude of
Page 4 | Magazine
leadership “may get [women] ahead at work,” says Venker, “but when it comes to love, it will land them in a ditch.” Don’t ask what the hell “attitude of leadership” is supposed to mean; just go with her on this one. Work skills are the opposite of love skills, OK?! The more you work, the less you love. Got it? Why did I think it was a good idea to bring a cover letter and résumé on a date? Why do I pester every boyfriend with weekly time sheets and ask to be reimbursed for all expenses incurred on the job? Oh right, because I’m a workaholic monster with a pussyhat where my heart should be! Please, someone, lift me out of this romantic ditch! It doesn’t have Wi-Fi! As for how to have a healthy relationship (should I ever be so blesséd as to find a man), the solution is energies, according to Venker. “Every relationship requires a masculine and a feminine energy to thrive. If women want to find peace with men, they must find their feminine—that is where their
real power lies. Being feminine isn’t about being beautiful or svelte, or even about wearing high heels (although those things are nice). Being feminine is a state of mind. It’s an attitude,” she writes. For those keeping track, we now have two “attitudes” to choose between: leadership and feminine. There is only one right answer here, folks. It gets better: “In essence, being feminine means being nice,” writes Venker. Niceness (by women) is the key to the healthy relationships that women are solely in charge of maintaining. In case you’re not yet fully convinced of the wisdom of the radical Be Nice doctrine, Venker has sources. She quotes, quite seriously, “a man named Chuck” who once commented on her website: “A strong woman is awesome. But she must be inviting
and be able to mesh into an actual relationship. Needing to dominate and overpower, that is a no-go.” Woke-bae alert! Thank you, Chuck, for letting the culture at large know that you’re not supposed to dominate and overpower the person you’re dating. Venker also quotes Jackie Kennedy: “There are two kinds of women: those who want power in the world, and those who want power in bed.” And here I was thinking the two kinds of women.
“
Every relationship requires a masculine and a feminine energy to thrive. If women want to find peace with men, they must find their feminine— that is where their real power lies. Being feminine isn’t about being beautiful or svelte

Diversity to rock the runway at New York Fashion Week While the idea has picked up steam, Catherine Bennett, senior vice president, managing director of IMG fashion events, cautioned that it is not a business model for everyone.
F
rom faux furs and statement outerwear to floral prints and pants suits for warmer weather, a diversity of styles for all seasons will hit the runway at New York Fashion Week. Many designers at the semi-annual event, which begins on Thursday, will preview 2017 fall/winter apparel that will land in stores months from now. But others will follow a trend that started last year and show in-season designs for spring/summer that consumers can snap up immediately. “We’re also seeing a lot of designers show spring as well with their ‘see now/buy now’ collection,” said Katrina Mitzeliotis, fashion director at celebrity and style website HollywoodLife.com.
Page 6 | Magazine
“There is more diversity than ever before in what’s coming down the runway.” Designers Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford and a few others featured inseason looks at last September’s Fashion Week, months ahead of when the fashion world was accustomed to seeing them. Look for plenty of mashups, or mixed fabrics that appear to be thrown together with studied casualness, to grace Fashion Week runways this season, said Roseanne Morrison, fashion director of The Doneger Group. She expects plenty of pant suits and outfits with a tailored look, too. “I am sure a lot of the fabrics will be lighter in weight because most
of the designers are addressing seasonless, or ‘see now/buy now’ concept, because nobody is really buying for three months ahead,” she said. While the idea has picked up steam, Catherine Bennett, senior vice president, managing director of IMG fashion events, cautioned that it is not a business model for everyone. “It’s really a personal decision for each designer,” she explained. “It’s a great solution for some brands but not for others.” But diversity may extend beyond the fashions at Fashion Week, which organizers said attracts about 100,000 people and generates $880-million in revenue
for New York City. Last season more than 25 per cent of the models in shows in New York, London, Paris and Milan were women of color, according to a study by thefashionspot.com website. New York led the way, with 30.3 per cent, and that could rise this year. The city’s Fashion Week also featured the most plus-size models in recent history, more women over 50 years old and a slight increase in transgender models, with 10 appearances. “We’re seeing diversity more and more in fashion, whether it is race or size,” said Mitzeliotis. Fashion experts hope the trend will continue and make the shows more.

Fashion Startup Wants Designers to Make Clothes That Fit All Women This week, top designers, models, and style bloggers are flocking to the Big Apple for New York Fashion Week. And while the biannual gathering of trendsettes is meant to include the who’s who of the fashion world, it has been criticized for excluding a major segment of fashion’s consumers: plus-size women.

ia&Co, a clothing subscription service for women sizes 14 and above, wants to change that. On Thursday, the startup took out a full-page ad in The New York Times challenging the fashion world to design clothes that fit women of all sizes. “Fashion she can’t wear is becoming a bit unfashionable,” reads the top of the ad, which is also a call to action: “This week, we challenge true fashion vanguards to start designing for women of all sizes.” Company founder and CEO Nadia Boujarwah says she hopes to get designers’ attention through highlighting the business case for designing for the plus-size women. Research firm NPD Group reports that in 2015, although an estimated 67% of American women are size 14 or larger, sales of plus-sized clothing accounted for just 17% of the U.S. women’s apparel market.
A survey of 1,500 Dia&Co customers conducted last month revealed that the majority of them (72%) do not believe that fashion designers create their designs with the average American woman in mind. 78% of these women said they would be willing to spend more money on clothing if more designers offered plus size options. “That gap is an opportunity,” says Boujarwah. Subscribe to the Broadsheet, Fortune’s daily newsletter on the world’s most powerful women. Boujarwah and Dia&Co co-founder Lydia Gilbert recognized that opportunity in 2014, launching the company together after meeting at Harvard Business School. The startup’s product offering is similar to that of straight size fashion subscription service Stitch Fix. After filling out a survey on style preferences, Dia&Co customers receive five clothing items.
“
The at-home try-on model works particularly well for plus-size women, for whom finding clothing in their size in stores can be problematic. “It’s so stressful,” says Ariana Varas, a longtime Dia&Co customer from Queens, New York.

Has the Meghan Markle Effect on Fashion Already Started? Meghan Markle and Prince Harry officially announced their relationship in November. They’ve reportedly been together for longer, though, and the public and media seem eager to speed things along and promote Markle to Duchess-dom.

hat Kate Wore has been faithfully following Kate Middleton’s style for years, and it was only a matter of time before a similar site devoted to Suits star and humanitarian Meghan Markle came along. Meghan’s Mirror, a style blog run by Amanda Dishaw of Vancouver and Christine OBrien of Washington, D.C., tracks and identifies everything the actress wears, from what she sports on set to her favorite water bottle to bring to yoga. While Markle does not yet have the same power as Middleton to sweep items off shelves, brands like Kamik and Sarah Flint confirmed to Vanity Fair that they’ve experienced an increase in sales and site traffic since Markle was photographed wearing their shoes.
Our editor Amanda has been a longtime viewer of Suits. [When she saw] Meghan’s character on-screen, she turned to the Internet to find out about Meghan’s style and fell in love with her laid-back California-girl aesthetic.

he American design house, which has a store in Ross Park Mall, took over the Russian Tea Room in midtown Manhattan on Friday to unveil its latest collections. Fall 2017 pieces were inspired by the creativity and romance of 1920s Paris with moody florals, rich embroideries and whimsical handbags shaped like cakes and Russian nesting dolls. It was a nod to and celebration of strong women, set to a soundtrack of spoken phrases such as “she’s a leader in her field” and “she believed she could, so she did.” On another floor, the brand showcased spring looks available now in stores and online at KateSpade.com. Vibrant tassels, a camel-print jacket, bold rose prints,

and more cute and quirky bags (this time, camel- and monkey-shaped ones) channeled the warmth and magic of Morocco. To make the moment even sweeter, guests munched on caviar and cookies with a side of tea. Now that this season of Ladies of London is over, we’re going to miss having Juliet Angus inspire us with her eclectic and chic style every week. But lucky for us, we can always follow her sartorial adventures around London and the world through her blog, JulietAngus.com, and
her Instagram, which is filled with stunning fashion photos. Juliet really kicked her blog up a notch during this season of Ladies of London, which paid off as we saw her celebrate reaching 100,000 followers on Instagram (she has 136K now). “Every day I am working on my blog, on my career,” Juliet recently told The Daily Dish. “It’s been fun, and I’m so proud and so happy.” The Ladies of London fashionista said that she has worked hard to make sure her blog stays relevant in the ever-changing world of fashion while also making sure that she remains true to herself. It looks like that mission has been accomplished as Juliet makes daring and and elegant looks accessible for her blog and Instagram followers, whether she’s on a family holiday in the Dominican Republic or taking in couture in Paris.

Why drinking coffee first thing in the morning is a bad idea Coffee has ingrained itself in the mechanisms of so many people’s early morning routines. There is something romantic about brewing a carafe, or holding a freshly.
D
rinking coffee shortly after waking up, as it turns out, is actually a bit counterproductive. Not only does it undermine the caffeine’s effect, but it tends to lead people to build a tolerance for the drug, thereby diminishing its effect down the road. Our bodies produce a hormone called cortisol, which has been branded the “stress hormone,” because it tends to appear when we are either stressed or fearful. But that same hormone is also a key component of our natural, daylong hormonal cycle, known as the circadian clock, which helps wake us up in the morning and wind us down at night. The gist is that when our body releases cortisol, we feel more awake. As the above video, which was put together by the popular science explainer Youtube channel ASAP Science, shows, there is such thing as a less than ideal time to drink coffee. And that time is first thing in the morning, when cortisol levels are highest.
There are two basic problems with consuming caffeine when cortisol production is high. First, caffeine tends to interfere with the production of cortisol. The body then produces less of the hormone and relies more on the caffeine. Second, drinking coffee while cortisol is high leads us to develop long-term tolerances for caffeine, which is why so many habitual coffee drinkers say it has less of an effect on them. In effect, caffeine replaces the boost we would ordinarily get from cortisol rather than supplementing it. Three times throughout the day — in the early morning, around midday, and in the evening–cortisol levels rise. It’s during the troughs above — between roughly 10 a.m. and noon, and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.—when people should drink coffee if they want to get the most out of their caffeine. Between those hours, the coffee is actually most needed, and, perhaps most importantly, will not interfere with our body’s own essential mechanism for keeping us alert.
