chapter 1 identity history The History of Airwalk New Brand / New Statement

The history of airwalk

9

Our vision is to create an action sports and support this culture.

Airwalk was founded in 1986, the brainchild of George Yohn and Bill Mann. Yohn, no stranger to the footwear business, and Mann, an art student with a background in athletic gear, wanted to create longer-lasting and better functioning shoes for skateboarders. Neither Mann nor Yohn were skateboarders; rather, the inspiration for the look, construction, and overall aesthetic of Airwalk would come out of observation. Mann would scout skate parks, watching the ways skater did their tricks and how they damaged their shoes. Options for skaters were slim in those days and Yohn and Mann knew there was a market to tap into. By the mid-90s, Airwalk was making hundreds of millions of dollars, the fifth largest in the athletic shoe industry at the time. They led the street skateboard culture and presented them with a complete brand. Their philosophy and vision, as an inspiration, have influenced many skateboarders and street culture.

Chapter 1 Identity History

Beyond the passion— airwalk Supoorts challenging places, sites and provide the new inspiration.

10

new brand / New statement

11

Airwalk has produced shoes for only skateboarders in the past. Their passion was to support those who take risks and respect their street culture. However, Airwalk had to go beyond the skateboard market in order to grow its brand and had to move to a new, larger business area. As a result, Airwalk has decided to rebrand and to be reborn as a brand through their unlimited potential and scalability. Now, Airwalk will go beyond the making of skateboard shoe to a wider world of adventure. Through observation of challenge scenes or sites, Airwalk will create a new inspiration for the people who enjoy and take the risks. Passionate adventures and challenges in a beautiful environment with extraordinary people will bring new perspectives and inspirations to our lifestyle. Through a new identity concept “Beyond the passion, Airwalk will provide a variety of services such as extreme travel products with the safety system, extreme gears, shooting, and media for the people who challenge their limit in extreme sites. Airwalk’s brand will evolve into a more extended concept and into a more systematic brand with a new identity system.

Main Logo Mark

14

The final logo of the Airwalk brand produced using the alphabet A and W, and three keywords. The instability of the shape that was a problem in the existing process was modified to a more stable rectangle shape by adding two small triangle on both sides. This graphical element visually represent A and W and show the possibility that they can evolve as a module and graphic elements. To emphasize a challenging and progressive impression, this logo type uses a dart blue, bright orange, and light blue colors, and these colors also directly represent adventure and challenging environment.

16

The Airwalk logo, built with a perfect X value, has the advantage that it can be applied more precisely in any situation. It is also extensively and more stable when used as graphical elements such as patterns. In addition, when expanded to various versions of the logo, this logo can act as a single module, making it highly variable.

Background Uses

18

Using a logo in black and white and suggesting a way to use color will help to use ore systematic logos. When a logo used in black and white, it processes so that a three-dimensional logo can be expressed even in the situation of black and white color by giving an opacity to an existing color portion. Also, when using one or two colors, I did not use opacity to use the existing brand colors but to show a more two-dimensional clear form of the logo.

Airwalk’s logo system does not distinguish between print and media use, but its usage varies by size. Typically, less than 1 inch, less than 5 inches, and less than 50 inches is used. It also specifies the minimum size for the actually smallest logo. They are a complete logo and can be used at a minimum of 1.5 inches. Typography

32

In order to better express the keywords of brand, Airwalk uses the Industry Inc., and Work Sans that have a more challenging and strong form as brand typography. Industry Inc. is a title-only font, which can be used as a point, a large title, or a small title in various parts. Work Sans, on the other hand, is a sans serif typeface with nine different weights and can be used for body text or small titles. The hierarchical structure of Industry typography, which is a title typeface, is used by utilizing color or space. In the case of Work Sans, it is possible to make a hierarchical structure more freely by weights, size, colors, and the like.
