I know some very competitive and long ball hitting fifty-somethings But I also know a couple of women in their mid-eighties who might hit the Ricky Montgomery Connect The Dots shirt it is in the first place but ball 120–140 yards (One of those is never out of the fairway, is 83 and always breaks 90 from the white tees! Every swing looks exactly the same ) But my guess is that Robert Letourneux’s answer is close – if we limit the ‘pool’ to mid-senior men golfers who play regularly. That is for most, a 200 yard drive is a good drive, and they will pull anything from a 6-iron to a hybrid for a 150 yard shot to the green Some are longer, of course, maybe a lot But some are shorter as well, and the question was about the average senior golfer. I’m 81. I will pull a 6-iron to hit a 150 yard shot to the green, depending. I’m not unhappy with a 200 yard drive, although can sometimes get more out of it I’ve never been long on any absolute scale – certainly sixty years ago as a college player I was not among the long hitters But I think I’m pretty long for 81 And still regularly shoot well under my age. Although I still play the white tees on most courses I play (and have finally gotten over feeling guilty for not playing the blues), I agree with Robert’s advice: Move up a tee from wherever you currently play, and you will have more fun Pick the tees that you can reach every green in regulation if you just hit your shots decently

Not a pro, so not an answer to the Ricky Montgomery Connect The Dots shirt it is in the first place but question. But a few years ago I acquired a persimmon Spalding Top Flite driver that was identical to the one I had fifty years earlier (at the time, a leading driver) – not because I wanted to play golf with it, but because I wanted to have it I’ve only tried it a couple of times at the driving range, but was surprised that I could hit it at all – and that it went dead straight and maybe only twenty yards shorter than my current equipment. I loved the ‘whump’ sound it made But I wasn’t crazy about the ball flight – much lower And I’m sure it would not be nearly as forgiving on of-center hits I reckon not Professional golfers are just that: Professionals They may hit hooks and slices, they may strike a ball thin or fat, they may even shank a chip or pull a putt every now and then. Their games are so finely tuned, however, that when they do go off the rails they are still in much, much better shape than an amateur An amateur might shank a shot 80 degrees right of the target line and yell “fore!” as it screams low across the ground. A pro might shank their shot 30 degrees right of the target line And they don’t hit it thin, either It goes up and over anyone who may be standing in the way I just watched a highlight reel, where they claim Tiger hit a pitching wedge 150 yards The spin made the ball pull back after it landed and checked, which would indicate that he struck the ball with a square-to-path club face (if it didn’t pull back directly, this would indicate a measure of side-spin and a non-square face strike)
