01 The GATE

location: Şişhane, Istanbul / TURKEY type: academic, individual work, Yeditepe Univ. program: archive and research center date: 2019 spring term, graduation project supervisor: assist. prof. dr. Tansu Acımert contact: tansuacimert@gmail.com

The Gate is an archive and a research center complex with public facilities in Şişhane which is a neighbourhood in a district of Beyoğlu in Istanbul, located opposite side of the Historical Peninsula. The area has transformed during the years by preserving its linear organization according to historical references which reperesent public areas at that time. But it has lost that linear organitazion and square shape by unplanned growing, roads and traffic. The area turned into a transition zone rather than a public space. The aim of the project ‘Istanbul Archive and Research Center’ is give the public open space organization-maidan back to Şishane. The project strives for shaping the pedestrian flow into the area and creating a location that can be used for diverse activities: meeting, resting, eating, working, playing, performing. Also to enjoy and learn İstanbul with the archive and research center program which includes various books, paintings, gravures about Istanbul at the heart of the city.

02 TRANSITION

location: Zeytinburnu, Istanbul / TURKEY type: academic, individual work, Yeditepe Univ. program: student housing complex project date: 2018 fall term, design project V supervisor: assist. prof. Evin Eriş contact: erisevin@gmail.com

The main function of this project is defined as student housing complex with a public facilities. The proposal project questions the students’ state of movement, being present, connecting, and breaking through the concept of impermanence and relates them to the passenger. Leaving the entire project area as a public park, it places the marmaray train station as a secondary function in the center of the design by locating the building above the railway. It cares about ‘green’, which is the most basic deficiency / need of Istanbul. The mass, which was initially located along the railway track, is divided according to the references and these spaces become transition zones between the units. The openings were made by predicting that people passing through the surrounding roads would see green. The first floor of the dormitory also serves as an overpass. In this context, the ‘barrier’ state of the railway between the project area and the neighborhood disappears. The design is shaped by the problems that are the result of an analysis. The study which is believed as an alternative, an innovative and contributes to the city life was made for the solutions. CONCEPT DIAGRAMS

03 MAPPING HARAMIDERE Mapping Haramidere is the study from the research program at The Istanbul Architecture and Urbanism Research Academy (AURA Istanbul), 2021 Spring Semester. Valleys are one of the important ecological identity elements of Istanbul. The Istanbul ecosystem is fed by the valleys and cuts through the islands of development and provides unseen connections to the city that breathe. But do valley stream reclamation efforts today really improve these distorted connections? In this context, in the scale of Küçükçekmece-Büyükçekmece lakes and their connections, which are one of the important natural water resources during the urban development of Istanbul, the change of streams and surface waters connected to these streams was mapped over Haramidere. Within the scope of this study, Haramidere and its surface waters, which lost their natural structure; It was analyzed on past maps. By making comparisons of the past, it was seen that the surface waters were transformed into the streets or disappeared with urban development. Different urban textures around these lines were examined in sections for a base for further studies of the AURA researchers.

location: TAKSIM Square, Istanbul / TURKEY type: professional, architecture project with IND [Inter.National.Design] Arman Akdoğan, Felix Madrazo, Elvan Çalışkan, Oğuz Can Yürek program: temporary pavillion date: 2020 January, built direct contribution: assistance to the facade design process, production of concept and construction drawings, project management

Convergence Stop or Taksim Pavillion is a temporary pavilion hosted at Taksim Square in Istanbul. The pavilion allocates space for Taksim square history exhibition at the ground floor while its stepped roof conforms an urban amphitheatre where debates, poetry or music can occur spontaneously. The pavilion is an amphitheatre made up of two wings that connect to the square through steps at both sides. The stage becomes an activity platform surrounded by two tribunes that face each other. The steps are made of wood modules that are placed on a steel structure. The stage hosts a surface of 180m2 where dance, theatre, music or spontaneous performances can be watched.

9

The pavilion announces the intention of the new mayor of Istanbul to launch competitions to improve the quality of public spaces of Istanbul. The results of such competitions were going to be exhibited at the pavilion and also voting from citizens is on the agenda.
