WHY SHADOW? by Jennifer Newman, RMT Shadow

It all started for me in 2001. I was living in Columbus, Ohio ,having transplanted to the area after touring with a singing group. I had few friends, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and not much to look forward to on weekends. One day while perusing the Columbus Dispatch I saw an ad for a group looking for “energetic women who love to sing – that ad changed my life as it brought me to a Scioto Valley Chorus rehearsal and introduced me to Sweet Adelines and barbershop harmony. Fifteen years, 5 choruses, and 3 quartets later -- it’s easy to see that I’m hooked on the harmonies and the relationships that SAI has brought me. I love all kinds of musical styles, but my passion rests with the chord ringing style of barbershop.

10

What I love most about SAI, however, is the unique opportunities it gives women to shine; not just on stage in our glittery costumes and heavy make-up, but also in more subtle ways. It’s easy to assume that my main gift is music – after all, I have 2 degrees in voice, but I have also been blessed with a wide array of administrative gifts (including a love of spreadsheets - yes, spreadsheets) that led to my taking on the mantle of Team Leader for the Philadelphia Freedom Chorus for 2 years as well as creating the Women’s Harmony Brigade. What better way to merge my passion for singing barbershop with my skills in organizing and event planning – two skills I would not have developed had it not been for my involvement in SAI.

It’s my desire to give back to the organization that has given so much to me that led me to join the RMT Shadow program. Being a Shadow gives me the opportunity to see how the administrative side of our region works, to help where I’m QHHGHG DQG WR ĆJXUH RXW ZKHUH , might serve in the future. If you have administrative gifts and a desire to give back to the organization outside of your chorus, I encourage you to consider joining me in the Shadow program. Together, we can do great things!

ARRANGING BARBERSHOP MUSIC 0DUVKD =ZLFNHU 6$, &HUWLĆHG 0XVLF $UUDQJHU continues to provide arranger training to anyone in Region 19 who is interested in arranging songs in the barbershop style‌

‌all from the convenience of your home.

She’s been doing this for many years, but recently she’s added Webinar technology to the educational format. This means that emerging arrangers can be paired with others at a similar skill level to participate in “remote classes using their home computer and telephone.

In addition, she continues to work one-on-one with more advanced level arrangers in the region as the key to developing arranging skills in the barbershop style is an on-going process of practice and feedback, more practice and more feedback, then more practice and (well, you get the idea!)

Interested? Contact Marsha at MarshaSingsBBS@ verizon.net and she’ll get you started by sending you a link to watch a 40-minute introductory presentation that gives an overview of the arranging process. She will also help you determine at what level you can get started so as to ensure the greatest potential for success.
