Four Brothers UK Premiere Dir. John Singleton Dur: 110min Lang: English USA 2005 Cinema 1 9 September: 8.30pm

The bfm international film festival opener is the US number one box-office smash Four Brothers. An engrossing tale of brotherly love and cold blooded revenge, Four Brothers come together to discover that they are bound by ties thicker than blood. Don’t miss the film which is a fine return to form from acclaimed filmmaker John Singleton. After their adoptive mother is murdered during a grocery store hold up, the Mercer brother’s, hot-headed Bobby (Mark Wahlberg), hard-edged Angel (Tyrese Gibson), family man and business man Jeremiah ( Andre Benjamin), and hard rocking Jack (Garett Hedlund) reunite to take the matter of her death into their own hands. Also stars the UK’s Chiwetel Ejiofor. Born in Forest Gate, east London to Nigerian parents, Ejiofor’s reputation is fast growing, as is his workload. After a starring role in Woody Allen’s movie, Melinda and Melinda he has gone on to complete Serenity, Kinky Boots and now Four Brothers.

Not normally recognised for badboy roles, Ejiofor plays villain Victor Sweet in Four Brothers and relished the change, he reveals. “I just enjoyed reading the script, reading the character. It just kind of made me laugh. There’s that instantaneous thing about playing a villainous role. I think that’s one of the great things about the acting profession is that you’re able to have more fun in that respect and tap into various different parts of yourself. Villains are always pretty interesting to play. They’re kind of exciting.” Want to know more? Read the full interview with Chiwetel Ejiofor about being an east Londoner to becoming a Hollywood star in the Sept/Oct festival (issue 32) of bfm magazine on sale now.

The bfm IFF has two screenings of this award winning screen- adaptation of Bishop T.D. Jakes’ book Woman Thou Art Loosed which tells the tale of dysfunction, isolation and finally, inspiration. The film topped the US top ten grossing film in its opening first weekend. Michelle Jordan (Kimberly Elise) is a young woman raised in an environment of abuse and molestation at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend Reggie (Clifton Powell); which her mother Cassie (Loretta Devine) unwittingly condones. These circumstances lead young Michelle into the dark abyss of

drugs, prostitution and prison. While incarcerated, Michelle sends Bishop Jakes (Bishop T.D. Jakes, playing himself) a letter requesting a visit. Jakes agrees to meet Michelle and soon uncovers the painful history that led to her personal demise. After conferring with the warden, he is successful in getting Michelle an early parole with one stipulation that she attend Bishop Jakes’ upcoming three day revival. When Michelle, now a hardened inmate, is released from prison she chooses to stay at a halfway house rather than be under the same roof as Reggie.

Woman Thou Art Loosed Still bitter and distrusting of the church community, her mother in particular, Michelle is forced to do some soulsearching that takes her on a journey of recovery and resolve. This smash hit film has won four awards including a best actress award for Kimberly Elise’s fine performance. Elise also stars in A Diary of a Mad Black Woman which is also part of this year’s festival. She also starred alongside Denzel Washington in the dramas The Manchurian Candidate and John Q. Elise’s other film credits include, Bait and Beloved for which she won a Golden Satellite Award.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman European Premiere Dir: Darren Grant Dur: 116 mins Lang: English USA 2005 Cinema 1 10th September: 6.30pm 12th September: 8.30pm

The bfm IFF will be showing two screenings of the European premiere of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. This film took the US by storm. It grossed $21.9m in box office receipts in its opening weekend and received nominations for two awards earlier this year. Helen McCarthy (Kimberley Elise) has everything a woman wants: a nice house and rich husband. However after her husband Charles throws her out of the house after admitting to an affair a distraught Helen turns to her mother, grandmother Madea and cousin Brian who take her in and turn back to God. Helen learns for the first time in her life to stand up on her two feet and is ready to remove herself from her relationship with Charles and move on with Orlando. But when her husband is almost killed by a vengeful client, Helen wonders if she has the heart to forgive him despite everything

This is Tyler Perry’s first big film production, based on his stage play of the same name, in which he wrote the screenplay, financed the film, and acts the role of one of his most beloved characters, Madea who plays the grandmother. Within a six-year span, Tyler Perry, went from being homeless to selling out theaters wherever he goes. He has become one of America’s most successful young playwrights, with seven productions, five in which he also acted, directed, and produced. There is a lot more to come from this highly talented man.

It sets the bar of excellence and originality very high indeed. The story is shrewdly set up and beautifully acted. I was knocked over by the force of Quanita Adams as Sannie. This award-winning film tells the story of a disgraced ex-apartheid cop, granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, arrival in a small town triggers a cathartic journey of Forgiveness and revenge for himself and the family of the activist he killed. Teddy Mattera, the film’s director said, “To achieve this accolade at this particular film festival is an incredible honour for me and the film. Max and Mona is a quintessentially African film in its conception and for FESPACO to recognise it with this prize is enormously humbling”.
