gateways to great futures
2012 annual report
Our Mission To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Officers’ Letter Thank you for your incredible support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). Ongoing commitment and generosity from caring donors like you, who understand the life-changing work we do, make our success possible. Your support is needed more than ever before. Today’s kids face enormous challenges: 1 in 4 won’t graduate from high school on time; 1 in 5 lives in poverty; and 1 in 3 is overweight or obese. More than 15 million kids are left unsupervised after school each day. Schools can’t fix these problems alone; communities can’t do it alone. It takes all of us. Boys & Girls Clubs are pillars of our communities, combating these terrible statistics by providing gateways to great futures for kids. In 2012, we increased our impact on America’s young people. More than 4,000 Clubs helped nearly 4 million kids and teens do well in school, give back to their communities and live healthier lifestyles. We also made impressive strides in measuring youth progress in three key outcome areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. We also provided safe havens for youth. Sadly, our kids live in a dangerous world, where they are too often placed in harm’s way. That’s why child safety has always been – and always will be – our topmost priority. In 2012, Boys & Girls Clubs of America worked strenuously to help our Clubs provide the safest, most secure environment possible for children and teens. With support from great friends like you, we will continue our focus on ensuring youth attend Clubs more often, because we know the more we see them, the greater the benefit on their lives. Working together, we will advance this great Movement, fill our Clubs and help every young person who enters our doors be prepared to lead America to an ever greater future. Thank you again!

How the National Organization Serves Local Clubs In 1906, 53 local Clubs banded together to establish a national organization. Since then, the national organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and local Clubs have worked closely together to help America’s youth reach their full potential. Through its headquarters in Atlanta, regional service centers and the Government Relations office in Washington, D.C., BGCA provides assistance and support to Clubs in youth program development, board and staff development, organizational planning, resource development, marketing and communications, and administration and management. Key functions include: • developing and testing new programs for youth; • assisting Clubs with outcome-based program planning and evaluation; • providing comprehensive child safety resources to protect youth and position Boys & Girls Clubs as catalysts for child protection; • helping community leaders establish new Clubs and expand existing ones; • providing training experiences, management consultations and resources for staff development, volunteer recruitment, marketing, fundraising, compensation and benefits administration; • promoting greater public awareness about the Movement’s mission and impact; and • addressing legislative and public policy issues affecting young people and the voluntary sector.
Our No. 1 Priority At Boys & Girls Clubs, child safety is our No. 1 priority. For more than 100 years, child protection and safety have been the bedrock principles of our work. Over the years, BGCA has advocated for the passage of the U.S. PROTECT Act to enhance background screening systems and access, and has partnered with the FBI, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the CDC to improve safety practices on behalf of all youth in America. In 2012, BGCA created the Child & Club Safety Department, which focuses solely on helping our Clubs provide a safe and secure experience for youth. From criminal background checks to safety policies and procedures of the highest standards, this new department provides a comprehensive and consistent approach to safety at each of our Clubs. By offering a 24-hour toll-free hotline and ongoing training, all supported by the latest advances in knowledge and technology, BGCA is ensuring that Clubs are ever-vigilant at providing safe havens for our nation’s young people.
