Mentoring Youth At-Risk Also new for OJP FY 2014 is the Mentoring Youth At-Risk programmatic emphasis, which includes: youth at-risk, high-risk youth, and youth residing in high-risk environments and distressed areas. To assist Clubs in identifying and aligning appropriate mentoring programs and services, OJP FY 2014 grantees will be provided with a Mentee Risk Profile template. This tool is intended to help Club staff and mentors: 1. note the individual and/or environmental risk factors that are faced by a mentee; 2. determine which prevention programs would provide the best support to the mentee given the individual and/or environmental risk factors; 3. determine whether any additional mentor training and/or support systems may be needed to provide the best support to the mentee, given the individual and/or environmental risk factors. A Mentee Risk Profile must be filled out for each mentee. The Mentee Risk Profile Tool can be accessed here.

OJP FY 2014 Letters of Agreement Letters of Agreement (LOAs) were emailed Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, to Clubs recommended to receive funding. Please contact your BGCA Federal Grants Specialist or Director of Organizational Development (DOD) with questions or input regarding OJP FY 2014 grants.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE INAUGURAL 2014 KIWANIS CLUB IMPACT AWARD RECIPIENTS! When it comes to supporting children, Kiwanis International and Boys & Girls Clubs of America have enjoyed long and successful histories of serving those youth most in need. For the past eight years, leaders of the two organizations have collaborated to support Kiwanis Club and Boys & Girls Club partnerships at the local community level, with the stated objective being simply to improve the lives of children. To that end, BGCA and Kiwanis International have developed and mobilized a National Mentor Recruitment Collaboration intended to support the mentoring needs of all children, with an emphasis on addressing the mentoring needs of Boys & Girls Club members nationwide, while simultaneously reducing the existing mentor gap for minority males in the US. To promote and appropriately recognize the impact of successful local Kiwanis Club/ Boys & Girls Club collaborative best practices, this past year BGCA invited Boys & Girls Clubs to submit nominations for the Kiwanis Club Impact Award program. Each year, BGCA will present this prestigious national award in recognition of extraordinary Kiwanis Club support of local Boys & Girls Clubs. BGCA would like to congratulate the five Kiwanis Club recipients of the inaugural award.

Club Spotlight:

A MENTORING PARTNERSHIP: THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL NEW MEXICO AND THE RIO RANCHO KIWANIS CLUB

The Mayor of Rio Rancho (center) participated in the “Sunday is Funday” event, sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico and the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club.

BGCA defines a mentor as, “A caring individual who, along with parents or guardians, provides young people with emotional support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example in a structured environment.” The long-standing collaboration between the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico has opened the door for Kiwanis Club members to serve as mentors to Club kids. The Kiwanis mentors provide homework assistance and coordinate a back-to-school clothes shopping spree for kids in financial need. Kiwanis members also assist with a scholarship fund that provides financial support to families for participation in Club programming. Establishing a strong relationship with their Kiwanis Club has helped the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico expand services to youth in the Rio Rancho Community.

The Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club has volunteered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico’s Rio Rancho branch for over 25 years,” said Tim Sheahan, CPO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico. “The Kiwanis Club has helped build a KaBOOM! playground onsite with our Club members, read to Club members, and helped with the annual spring cleaning of the Club property. They hold their meetings at the Boys & Girls Club every other week and have invited some of our teenagers to their meetings to listen to guest speakers. In fact, it was through their tremendous support that this Club became a reality back in 1990.” To learn more about BGCA National Mentor Recruitment Collaborations, please click here.
