BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA’S 2015 NATIVE SUMMIT A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
Boys & Girls Clubs of America held its biannual Native Summit at the Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March. The summit, whose theme was “The Future is Now,” was hosted by the Pueblo Pojoaque Boys & Girls Club. The threeday conference included sessions such as “Effective Grant Writing,” “The Role of a Board Member,” “Enhancing Tribal Relationships” and “OJP FY 2014 National Mentoring Programs Grants Administration.” The summit was an overwhelming success, with record breaking participation. Teresa Walch, BGCA national vice president, specialized & organizational development services, received positive feedback from many conference attendees.

Said one Club CEO in attendance, “The Native Summit was the best conference that I have attended. It was well organized, and the agenda was well thought out and provided key information for all Clubs to bring back to their site and implement. Kudos to all those involved in the structuring and creation of such a fantastic conference.” For more than 20 years, BGCA has proudly partnered with Native communities to provide services to Native youth. BGCA presently serves 175 Native Clubs in 25 states, which, in turn, serve nearly 90,000 Native youth. The majority of Native Clubs are recipients of current OJP FY 2014 National Mentoring Programs grants.

The Club has a detailed process of matching mentors and mentees that takes into account Club member personality, gender, behavior, risk factors and cultural characteristics, including the importance of local traditional Ojibwe values in mentor/mentee interactions.
Are you doing great things with OJP National Mentoring Programs funding received through BGCA?
The Club engages mentees and mentors with fun activities, such as making homemade pizzas and a recent root beer float party where mentees and mentors discussed struggles and triumphs. The Club is also planning several summer events, such as a teen night where mentees and mentors will make fry bread and discuss its cultural significance.
Please visit the Federal Grants page on BGCA.net for details or email Andrew Heacox at aheacox@bgca.org or Marie Gordon at mgordon@bgca.org.
The Club strives to provide positive mentoring to the local Native youth, and believes its success with mentoring is based on an open dialogue between the mentors and mentees. It has also successfully implemented other programs like SMART Girls, CareerLaunch, Power Hour and SMART Moves.
If so, please tell us about it! We may include your success story as a feature on BGCA.net or in an upcoming edition of Grant Central.
