Club Mentoring Spotlight
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF HOPKINSVILLE-CHRISTIAN COUNTY This summer, teens, staff and volunteers from the Boys & Girls Club of Hopkinsville-Christian County in Kentucky participated in a Junior Police Academy administered by the Hopkinsville Police Department.
The Junior Police Academy gave Club kids the opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a positive environment and to build understanding of what police officers do. The program runs for one week during the summer and consists of tours, hands-on learning and panel sessions. Participating teens took a tour of the justice center and the new police department. They also had a chance to discuss some of the issues facing our country today with Hopkinsville Chief of Police Clayton Sumner.
Club kids also attended a mock crime scene where they learned all about fingerprints and observed a SWAT team demonstration. The week wrapped up with a barbecue.
“Kids, especially nowadays, need to build positive relationships with police officers. This, along with our ‘Cops vs Kids’ basketball game, are ways we can build those relationships,” said Terrence Davis, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Hopkinsville-Christian County. The Boys & Girls Club of Hopkinsville-Christian County is an OJP FY 2015 National Mentoring Programs grant recipient.
