ABOUT BGCAZ’S YOUTH OF THE YEAR PROGRAM Youth of the Year (YOY) is an annual program of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. It is sponsored nationally by Toyota Financial and locally by businesses and committed individuals. Youth of the Year candidates are selected based on community service, Club service, school and life goals, along with written essays on Club Experience, Vision for America’s Youth, and Personal Brand. In addition, candidates are judged on poise, self-confidence and public speaking. Each Club works to identify those exceptional young adults who embody the traits that Boys & Girls Clubs works to instill in each of our 13,000+ members. Once selected, these teens begin a life-changing, six-month journey. They are challenged to explore their personal history, formative experiences, find meaning in their talents and challenges and share those with the world in a 3-minute speech. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley’s Youth of the Year program requires a strong commitment from each student. They have the opportunity to develop their writing and presentation skills and engage in specialized workshops designed to help them find their unique “voice” and story to share with our prestigious judging panel.

Celebrating Youth Event 2022

I also want to be rich so that I can provide for my family as well as help others. Q: What’s your favorite quote or saying? “Sometimes people come into your life for a moment, a day or a lifetime. BOB BOVÉ BRANCH, A THORNWOOD LEGACY BAILEY MITCHELL Senior, Age 17, Agua Fria High School Bailey is well known around the community for being a very charismatic and kind teen member that knows how to socialize and connect with community members. He is very goal oriented and stays dedicated and motivated toward his goals. He has proven to be one of the biggest contributors as a teen member in the last couple of years at his Club. He volunteers his time and is always willing to lend a hand when needed without hesitation. He is currently Keystone President and is always finding ways to involve his team on community events. He continuously lends a helping hand to his peers, the staff, and the community. Bailey’s life story is what makes him even more impressive and deserving. He changed his life and through the Club’s guidance; staying on a positive path. Through all the hardships, he overcame them by staying humble, kind and becoming a leader. Bailey is pursuing a few things after high school. He is an amazing football player and plans to play in college while also pursuing a computer science degree. He hopes to one day be a part of the technology world and has dreams of getting drafted to the NFL. Apart from playing football, which is his passion, Bailey also likes to explore other hobbies in his spare time. He has recently picked up on oil painting and has become good at it, even entering a community art competition, and winning first place in the State. Q: What is your favorite thing about high school? My favorite thing about high school is the social life, meeting new people, learning about their unique cultures, and just learning how to live in general. Q: What is one thing you’ve had the opportunity to do because of the Boys & Girls Club? I’ve had the opportunity to do many things in my time here at the Club like going to my first NFL game and field trips to see weird animals. However, my favorite was going to a football camp with an NFL player, setting a new record there and winning an award. Q: What’s your favorite quote or saying? Something I came up with myself is, “Change starts today, not tomorrow” meaning, do stuff today stop putting it off until tomorrow. 8

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley

CHANDLER COMPADRES BRANCH CHRISTIAN ALVARADO Freshman, Age 14, Chandler High School Christian shows great leadership and responsibility to his younger siblings, as well as around his Club. Christian enjoys participating in volunteer work. He has led a Turkey Drive and a Christmas Drive to help give back to the community. He also likes to dance and is involved in Ballet Folklorico, a traditional dancing club. He wants to go to college to major in business and marketing. In the future, Christian knows he wants to be involved and help the youth. In his spare time, Christian likes to play soccer and basketball with his friends. He is good at, and enjoys cooking. Q: What is one thing you’ve had the opportunity to do because of the Boys & Girls Club? I had the opportunity to join the Boys & Girls Club Hip-Hop Club. I had so much fun because we ended up preforming and it was pretty cool. Q: If you could live in a book, tv show, or movie, what would it be and why? If I could live in a TV show I would live in Cobra Kai. I think that show is sick and I would get to learn karate! Q: What’s your favorite quote or saying? I always go by two things: First, treat others the way you want to be treated. Second, a quote from the Lion King, “The past can hurt; but, you can either run from it or learn from it”.

LOUIS & ELIZABETH SANDS BRANCH JAYNA SHAFER Senior, Age 18, Deer Valley High School Jayna has been a Club member at the Sands Branch for nine years. During her Club membership she has helped tutor her fellow teen members in math and science. Jayna has a 3.39 GPA at Deer Valley High School, working 30 hours a week, and is an older sister helping her mother raise her siblings. She strives to lead by example and inspire young women to “reach for the universe” as she says, and prove to the world that they (women) can achieve anything. Jayna has been involved with Torch Club, Keystone and L.I.T program. She has been a part of planning committees with her Clubs and special Club events/ celebrations such as Earth Day, MLK day, Fall Festival, and fundraising through Snack Shack and Keystone. She also participated in raising funds to purchase sleeping bags and toiletries for LGBTQIA homeless youth for the organization one•n•ten. She has served as the secretary and co-chair of her Keystone Club. Jayna is currently working with Keystone to create a mentoring program for Torch Club by Keystone members. Jayna has gone through some challenges this year with the loss of her younger sister JaiAnna. She turned grief and loss into motivation, making it her ultimate goal to “do it for her” by living her life to the fullest and taking any challenge head-on. She is determined to attend college and study software engineering with a minor in automotive engineering. After completing her degree, she will be joining the Navy to further advance her career. Q: What is one thing you’ve had the opportunity to do because of the Boys & Girls Club? I had the opportunity to join SMART Girls and I really enjoyed it. It was created for young girls to talk about important issues that affect us right now. It helped me and other people. I also enjoyed going on our volunteer trips. Q: What’s your favorite quote or saying? “I live for her.” by me. I live by this saying now because, I didn’t want to live before and even more after my sister was gone.

SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN BRANCH JESSICA DAVIS Senior, Age 16, Leading Edge Academy Jessica has been a Club member at the Superstition Branch for nine years. Her ambition and enthusiasm shines through in everything she does. Her determination and dedication have helped her to figure out how to be more successful in school by setting goals that are obtainable for her. During her membership, she has volunteered over 4,500 hours to help our community and has become a mentor for many of the members at her Club. She has also held positions such as vice president and treasurer of Torch Club as well as treasurer for Keystone. Jessica became a coach and referee for different Club sports including flag football, soccer, t-ball, and basketball. While coaching, she taught them how to strive to be a great team player and how to not give up once you start something. At the end of each season the kids were excited to start another sport, especially if Jessica would be their coach again. Jessica enjoys being a mentor to Club members so much so that during the summer, she participated in ‘Leader in Training’ at her Club which she has done for the past four years. In this program, Jessica would help kindergarteners to second graders improve their reading and comprehension. She gives 110% to those she mentors and shows them that as long as they try and do the best they can, they are successful. After completing some of her classes at Leading Edge Academy, she is planning on attending an NAIA, D1, D2 or D3 college to pursue her love for basketball and continue her education toward a career in law enforcement. Q: What is one thing (or your favorite thing) you’ve had the opportunity to do because of the Boys & Girls Club? I had a constant craving, a yearning, to improve and be the best.” - Kobe Bryant

SPENCER D. & MARY JANE STEWART BRANCH MASON ESPENDEZ Senior, Age 17, Western School of Science & Technology Mason has been a member of the Stewart Club since 2011. During those 10 years, he has participated in many Boys & Girls Club programs and events. He considers his involvement in the ‘Better to Give’ program to be one of the most impactful programs for him. In this program, he and his fellow teens would perform community service hours as a means to earn “money” for gifts that were to be given to families in need. This was just one of many programs that have taught Mason the importance of giving back. Mason has also sought out opportunities to volunteer outside of the Club, such as supporting the food bank, donating time at an animal shelter, packing up gifts for foster care children, and assisting with a women’s self-defense class. These experiences have helped shape Mason into a kind and thoughtful young man. Mason is currently a senior at Western School of Science & Technology. He is proud of his academic achievements and continued success in his advanced placement courses. Mason aspires to be an engineer, more specifically a Sustainable Civil Engineer. While Mason doesn’t claim any sport as a favorite, he enjoys all of them. He is always looking to stay active whether it is through working out, boxing, or practicing Tae Kwon Do. He has earned his first degree black belt! He also enjoys listening to music and cooking/trying new foods. Q: Who would you like to have dinner with and why? I would like to have dinner with my older brother, Zakory. I would choose to have dinner with him because since he is serving in the Navy now, we are going to be apart for quite some time. When we have family dinner with him in December, I will talk with him and rejoice over our accomplishments, as well as reminisce our past while stuffing down a bunch of scrumptious foods. Q: What advice would you give to young people about joining the Club? A piece of advice that I would give future youth thinking about getting a membership is that the beginning is always the hardest. Adapting to a new environment is not always easy, however, the positive influences that the Club will provide will make the journey much easier.

She also has a passion for writing and wants to become an author focusing on creating stories that center on characters with mental health issues as a way to normalize conversation around and bring understanding to this issue. Maya has a desire to be a beacon of hope. Maya enjoys the theater arts and choir, and has aspirations to pursue acting. She is involved in these programs at her school and really enjoys the emotional outlet they provide. Q: Who would you like to have dinner with and why? I would absolutely love to have dinner with Hypatia of Alexandria. She was one of the best mathematicians and philosophers of her time around 355 AC, and basically revolutionized the world of math single handedly. When she was murdered, part of the mathematic and philosophy world died with her as well. I would love to know about her in person, and see all the bright and intelligent ideas she had. Q: What technology are you most excited about in the future? I, for one, am very excited for the different kinds of medicines and advanced technology we could create for illnesses and diseases. Not only would it be incredibly beneficial, but I really hope that it will be accessible and affordable to all types of people, in different states, countries, and income class. Not only that, but it can make new jobs for all sorts of potential individuals.

At Metro Tech High School, Natalie is taking Early Childhood Education classes that will prepare her for her future goals. She is looking forward to college in hopes of attending Arizona State University where she will earn her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Child Psychology. Natalie is passionate about becoming a teacher and providing a better education to her community. In her spare time, she loves to write and read poetry. She also enjoys painting, drawing and just simply creating art. Natalie has also participated in cheer and student government. Her overall biggest talent is doing make-up. She loves watching makeup tutorials and using all of her friends as practice models. Q: What excites you most about the future? I’m excited about working with youth in my future career. Being able to help younger kids and teens with life is something I have always wanted to do. Once I am able to work, I want to work at a community center or an organization like the Boys & Girls Club to help kids with social and mental issues they are going through. Q: What’s your favorite quote or saying? My favorite quote is “Fairy godmothers use gentle words until gentle words no longer work” from the book ‘Break Your Glass Slippers’ by Amanda Lovelace. The is my favorite quote because I always try to use soft-spoken words before an argument can become too loud or a screaming match. JOE HENDERSON AWARD Tonight, the winner of the Youth of the Year title will receive the Joe Henderson Memorial Award. Joe Henderson was a Chandler Compadre whose passion was giving back to the community. He was very dedicated to Boys & Girls Clubs. Known for his incredible sense of humor and love of life, Joe Henderson was an inspiration to all who met him. Moving to Arizona in 1987, he dedicated himself to being an active citizen within the Chandler community. In 1990, he joined the Chandler Compadres with a dream of improving opportunities in Chandler. One of Joe’s true loves was flying, which is how he spent most of his days. Upon moving to Arizona, he purchased San Tan Dusters, beginning a career as a successful crop duster. Joe always said a fortunate man was one who went to work and looked forward to it! Joe was lucky to love his work, and we are fortunate to have been able to share our lives with Joe. Prior to his passing, he was elected President of the Compadres and Compadre of the Year.

Last year, BGCAZ distributed $113,873 in scholarship support to 41 Club Alumni.

OUR EDUCATION FUND The education fund is an account set aside for our current Youth of the Year candidates to use towards their post-secondary education, including paying for college or technical training school tuition. If the candidate is a high school sophomore or junior, they are able to use the funds for college accredited classes, school supplies or trainings. The education fund is also available to the candidates who are seniors to help them with other expenses a traditional scholarship may not cover. 22
