In January 2010 I chose to leave my career as an Engineer behind. Since then I have begun a new journey, walking a separate but parallel path towards becoming an Architect. Here are some of the sights I’ve come across along the way.

Cambridge Ontario, in particular the town of Galt, is in the initial stages of a rebirth. In recent years several modern buildings have appeared in the city-scape: the addition to City Hall, Cambridge Mills, Water Street Apartments, and a new theatre on Grand Avenue are bringing new architectural life to this small, old city. Continuing this theme of revitalization and renewal, my design for an urban hotel eschews from matching the buildings directly surrounding the corner of Main and Ainslie Street, and seeks to find more in common with the new structures beginning to appear. Based around a principle of providing each room with two viewing directions, this hotel is characterized by its seemingly random, but truthfully controlled, angularity. Materials have been inspired by both the old and the new architecture present in Cambridge: masonry and fieldstone paired with glazing and weathering steel.

Researchers and students will come to an archive out of need and desire, but what of those without a professional interest? The site for Transmission 94 is surrounded with movie theatres, restaurants, bars, and night clubs. This archive is attempting to capture the attention of nighttime crowds with extraverted facades and forms, trying to embed a memory into the minds of socialites from previous nights so that they may return another day and take their passing interest in Architecture a little further. -

The Plumeria is a proposed canopy system for an open beach front market. Imitating its namesake, the Plumeria radiates petals outwards from a small plaza nestled behind the steel structure. The orientation of the leaves aide in capturing ocean breezes, and the use of bimetallic apertures creates ever-changing patterns of light and shadow from the “leaf” canopy. -

FLOOR PLAN
5 10 METRES
A first academic exercise in creating a spatial experience using the simplest of architectonic forms: the wall, the floor, the ceiling, the column. Visitors descend from bright light into darkness, guided by a soft glow around their feet. In the main chamber the visitor finds a place of repose, a small space encased in an ethereal fence of light, clearly defined only on the floor. As the descent was lit from below, the ascent is lit from above, depositing the guest to a point where they can idly watch new visitors begin their journey from above.

The village of Warmond, located between The Hague and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, issued a competition for the construction of a new primary school, and the revitalization of the existing community centre in late 2011. Atelier PRO was awarded the project for their submission using a design strategy focusing on flexibility and integration between the two buildings. These two structures create a “heart” for the entire village, made manifest with a pavilion centred between the two structures.

The school is characterized by both its organic geometry and the flexibility of the programme. Service spaces are located in the central space, separated from the ring of classrooms lining the perimeter. Adjustable partitions allow for the classroom sizes and age group separations to be changed as the number of students dictates. -

A second component of the project was for the renovation of the Warmond community centre. While still a relatively new structure, the changing needs of the village moved beyond the capabilities of the centre. The library, partly contained within a historic schoolhouse, was larger than what was actually required, and conversely the day care could not provide enough spaces for local families. MAIN FLOOR

HOBBY ROOM
In only 14 years the community centre has undergone several renovations. Walls have been removed to expand rooms, doors have been installed to connect areas, yet the space available is still cramped and insufficient to fully serve Warmond.
The foyer was redesigned to combine the bar with a smaller cafe and library, and the area opened up to create a more welcoming space. The day care has been adjusted to allow more children without requiring an extension to the building, and the hobby room has been moved within the new school, creating a common space shared by both structures and securely connecting the two halves of Warmond’s heart.

Academic structure in the Netherlands greatly differs from the North American standard. At the “high school level, students are separated into academic and vocational studies. In Raalte, Carmel College Salland, one of these institutions, wishes to expand and update their academic facilities. The school directors require that the new structure be two levels tall, to match the vocational buildings to the north, contain facilities for five academic years, a specialized chemistry laboratory, and that all years share a common auditorium.

- APRIL 2012 - ATELIER PRO - FIRE STATION - ARNHEM, THE NETHERLANDS -
The Fire Department, or Brandweer, of Arnhem Netherlands issued a competition for the replacement of one of their stations. Design requirements included sufficient garage heights and turning radii for the fire trucks, and two access routes out of the area. Arnhem has a relatively low skyline compared to North America, most buildings only being three or four stories tall, which created the vision of turning the station into a watchtower. The gym, dining halls, and apartments occupy the third and fourth stories allowing the fire fighters to constantly scan the horizon.
