CITYWIDE EDUCATION
OF SAN FRANCISCO
The Citywide Education Department focused on increasing the access to and quality of our academic enrichment programs and supports for youth members in the 20222023 program year. The number of youth who participated in literacy programming and homework help grew by nearly 600 year over year. In response, Clubs were provided with additional academic success resources like new curriculum, community partnerships, and professional development. The Citywide Education Department also expanded services to recent alumni through the College Success Program, to support recent high school grads as they transitioned to and through higher education.
VISION & GOALS Rooted in socioemotional development practices, our academic programming and services foster an environment where members are motivated to learn, progress grades on time, graduate high school, and leave us with a plan to succeed in the future. SPECIAL PROGRAMS & EVENTS COLLEGE TOURS
COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM
Over spring break, BGCSF took over 80 high school and middle school members from 8 Clubhouses on college campus tours.
BGCSF successfully launched the College Success Program in spring of 2023. The program is designed to support youth transitioning to community and local state colleges by providing financial support and 1:1 academic mentoring. We started with a cohort of 19 youth for the 2023-24 school year, and we will add another cohort every year.
Middle school members embarked on a tour of the University of San Francisco (USF) and engaged in a panel with current students. Youth were able to see the student union, science labs, the gym and learn about all USF has to offer. The student panel talked about their pathway to USF, their studies and clubs on campus. High school members headed to UC Merced and Sacramento State for an overnight trip to explore both campuses. They toured each campus, ate lunch in the dining halls, and listened to student speakers share their personal experiences about college life. They also were able to learn about how the CSU and UC systems operate.
YOUTH SPOTLIGHT
SPELLING BEE BGCSF’s elementary school members participated in our annual Citywide Spelling Bee in July. Forty youth prepared all summer to compete in both individual and team spelling competitions. Awards were presented to the winners of each grade level and for the Club that won the most overall points. Congratulations to the Excelsior Clubhouse for taking home the win this year!
GENESIS
EXCELSIOR CLUBHOUSE
ASHLEY
TENDERLOIN CLUBHOUSE Ashley is a third grade student who was part of the Club Scholars program. Through this program she showed a lot of motivation to learn. It was evident that she was below grade level in reading, so the Tenderloin Clubhouse staff made sure she received extra help during Power Hour. She enrolled in LearnUp and participated in both fall 2022 and spring 2023. Through this program and her continued efforts, Ashley improved her reading abilities significantly, going from below a first grade level to just shy of a third grade reading level.
Genesis is a first generation college student attending City College of San Francisco and majoring in Nursing. She previously attended the Excelsior Clubhouse for two years where she participated in Workforce Development Programs such as the Leaders in Training program. While attending Burton High School, she participated in and completed a Certified Nursing Assistant program and was the recipient of the Boys & Girls Clubs Scholarship in 2023. After graduation, she transitioned into the College Success Program where she has attended financial literacy workshops, oneon-one mentoring sessions, and has received financial support to purchase a laptop. She continues to intentionally utilize BGCSF programs to support her continued academic success through college.
GREAT FUTURES START HERE.
