WELCOME TO
ANTIQUES AT THE GARDENS Dear Friends: Welcome to Antiques at The Gardens 2014! This year – our ninth – you’ll see a lot more of what you’ve come to enjoy about this unique show and sale. Favorite dealers have returned with even more stunning pieces and great buys, and themed collections from a new group of local Tastemakers are sure to wow you. You won’t see anything like this in Birmingham but here at The Gardens. We hope you find something unforgettable at our show, because the purchase of an antique should be memorable. A carefully-made product created with skill and care can represent history and permanence – just the opposite of much of today’s soulless mass-produced merchandise. We hope you think – like we do – that these beautiful objects are the ultimate in recycling; they are heirlooms that will continue to bloom throughout future generations. Speaking of heirlooms, The Gardens is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. During the past half-century, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens has partnered with the City of Birmingham to welcome millions of visitors from near and far to Birmingham’s most beautiful outdoor venue. Our free public garden (a rarity these days) is open 365 days a year, dawn to dusk, a claim few cultural attractions can make. So please come back – or better yet take some time while you’re here and get outside to see our diverse collections and gardens inspired by Alabama’s rich floral history. It’s all part of Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ commitment to improving the science literacy of our community, and in partnership with the City of Birmingham, preserving and enhancing one of Alabama’s most beautiful and inspirational public institutions. There is no more appropriate place than The Gardens to weave stories of the beauty of plants and gardens, and to tell of the singular importance of plants in our environment and our lives. Critical, nimble thinking and a keen grasp of science have been identified by many experts as the keys to success in coping with many complex issues in today’s world. The Gardens is, for many, a gateway to the natural world and its scientific foundation. Your support of Antiques at The Gardens, our largest fundraiser, is critical to our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment. Revenue from philanthropic gifts, memberships, plant sales and events like this one provide us with the dollars we need to deliver strong, science-based education programs to young and old alike, all year, every year. When you buy an heirloom here, you help us bloom as well.
As Mayor of the City of Birmingham and friend of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, I am pleased to offer my support for the Antiques at The Gardens event. Antiques at The Gardens not only increases tourism, but provides educational opportunities for our school children and horticulture and landscape architecture students. This show further beautifies Birmingham Botanical Gardens and it provides a variety of plants to be enjoyed by all who attend. The ongoing efforts of this show have played a vital role in the growth and development of our City’s progress as we work to build a better Birmingham. As Mayor, I am appreciative of your efforts, and pleased to encourage and support the Antiques at The Gardens event. Sincerely,
For The Gardens,
Frederick R. Spicer, Jr. Executive Director & CEO

hane Connolly & Company began in 1989 after its namesake trained for years with some of London’s leading flower designers. Connolly achieved celebrity status when he was bestowed the Royal Warrant of Appointment from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. After serving as the floral designer for the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, he returned to render the same services to the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. He has authored four books, with the most recent, A Year in Flowers, making its debut in the States this year. His trip to Birmingham, Alabama will be the first of a U.S. tour promoting his latest work. Connolly spoke to The Gardens about his style, how his company tackles projects and he offered a brief glimpse into his work with The Royal Family. Birmingham Botanical Gardens: How would you describe your style? Shane Connolly: We always try to use seasonal, locally sourced ingredients for our designs. Usually we’re flower-led rather than design-led so that the flower takes central stage and is allowed to be the star. Over the years I think we’ve simplified the way we arrange flowers as a result. We avoid floral foam wherever possible and instead choose containers that allow the flowers to be held securely or make a gridwork out of natural branches. The result is a style that is quintessentially relaxed and natural. BBG: What is the thing you consider most carefully when you take on a project? SC: The client and the venue. The most important thing to remember is that the designer’s skill is best when it’s not obvious. The setting we create must flatter the client and provide them with an ambience they feel comfortable in rather than in awe of. And we supply every element of that from containers to candles, lanterns and often the cloths as well. Obviously this involves lots of discussion and meetings but I’d far rather that than a standard style that might not be perfect for every client or setting. In a way it’s letting go of one’s own ego and trying to provide a service. BBG: Are you challenged more by large or small events/projects? SC: All events have their challenges. We try to keep calm whatever the scale! BBG: Your company “never works from a shopping list.” How is your approach to design for your customers unique? SC: We do try to find out about the client in general rather than the client simply in respect of their party. For example, a bride might be wearing a sophisticated dress in a city wedding on the day itself but, if she spends most of her life on a farm, then the setting must reflect that naturalness, I feel. Maybe using growing plants or trees, for example, but having them in sophisticated containers to suit the city setting. It’s being informed and thinking outside of the box. And also trying to see the whole picture. BBG: A Year in Flowers makes its debut in the States this year - what distinguishes this from your previous work? SC: Interestingly I think the main difference is that it’s very personal. The contents of the others were more directed by their titles....Wedding Flowers, Table Flowers, The Language of Flowers....etc. But this is simply using flowers I love most in the season they appear. And in the way I feel they’d be most flattered. So it’s very much my enjoyment of flowers and not about any floral wizardry! BBG: Were there finer details in the wedding ceremonies of Prince Charles or Prince William that we may not have noticed on television in the States? Small things in the ceremony that had a special or unique significance in the place of the hearts of the bride or groom? SC: This is a difficult and rather private realm to get into. ALL the flowers had a great significance to Their Royal Highnesses. “The Language of Flowers” played a key role in choices and everything was growing (and since replanted) or cut from the Royal Gardens (and then re-composted!). So it was very eco-friendly and a really thoughtful, individual, green statement. Photographs courtesy of Shane Connolly

M
ario Buatta is a premier American decorating talent who has been working in design for over 50 years. “The Prince of Chintz” comes to The Gardens as he celebrates the release of his first book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration. After launching his firm in 1963, Buatta filled his client roster with an impressive list of celebrities and moguls; from Henry Ford II to Barbara Walters, from Nelson Doubleday to Billy Joel. Buatta oversaw the design for the Blair House in Washington, D.C., and he was responsible for the design of pop-star Mariah Carey’s posh New York triplex that was once featured on a one-hour episode of MTV Cribs. Buatta spoke to The Gardens about his style and his illustrious career.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens: How did you get the call to work on the Blair House? Mario Buatta: I got that because of my interest in historic housing. And I had worked with Clement Conger in the past and he called me one day to see if I was interested in doing one of the floors – the first floor – and I said, “I would love to.” He said, “Well, it’s not going to start for another year or so.” And I didn’t hear from him for about another year. I said yes. I went down to see him. We had lunch. And then he told me that the upper floors, they were going to have local decorators do, but then they decided on Mark Hampton. I said, “Well, you know Mark is a colleague of mine. I think we should do it together.” The rooms were in four houses; he took the rooms in two of the houses, and I took the rooms in the other two houses. We met in the hallway. We worked very well together. And that’s how it all happened. BBG: When you walk into a room, what is the first thing that you notice? MB: Proportion. The way it’s arranged. If they don’t understand proportion and they don’t understand having a room that’s comfortable for their guests – they don’t have the right furniture, everything is sort of piled in the room – it’s kind of unfortunate. I see it a lot. I see it every day; people that don’t just get how to live. It’s hard to tell them how to live. They’re not easy to explain it to – how one does live. Proportion – the biggest mistake they on their own is that everything is either too small or too big. A little room with big furniture makes the room bigger and a big room with little furniture makes the room look awkward, you know? BBG: What are five things that no room should be without? MB: A very old, comfortable upholstery; the best upholstery that money can buy, because you live with that all of your life and it gets better as it gets older if it’s all hand done and great quality. Comfortable sofas, chairs – a fireplace is nice, if you can have one. Good flooring. Good carpets from wall-to-wall, or just a painted floor in some rooms. In the right climate, that’s perfect. Window blinds or shades to keep out the light. Good lighting. BBG: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration is your first book. Were you deliberately waiting this long to release your first book or had you simply never considered it until now? MB: I always thought a book was the “kiss of death” for a decorator, because people would look at what you’ve done, then they’d look at a magazine the next month and they’d say, “Oh, he’s doing the same thing! He hasn’t changed his style!” So it’s better to appear in magazines and not have a book. However, you couldn’t tell that to most decorators over the last 20 – 30 years. They use the books as vanity pieces to get work. I was always known for a style that I stuck to – I could do modern and I could do contemporary, but I really preferred to do the cozy, sort of English-American look. So that’s what I did. I never wanted to do a book. Rizzoli had been calling me for five years asking me to do a book. So I decided, well, at 50 years I can do a book and I’ll never have to do another one. So I decided to do the “Buatta-pedia.” I should have called it a “Buatta-pedia.” It worked out very well. At the end, when we were going to press, they were going to have to take out 100 pages and the publisher said, “I want to add 100 pages. Just keep everything the way it is, we love it.” B irmingham B otanical G ardens

everal years ago, Kinsey Marable, an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, gave up securities trading to deal in a more exotic commodity: rare and out-of-print books. He is now, without a doubt, the premier American source for private libraries, furnishing distinctive collections for clients from New York and California to London and Paris. His services also include cataloguing and organizing existing collections, providing conservation services and meticulous binding and leatherwork and purchasing entire libraries. Architecture, fine arts, gardening and biography get heavy play in a Marable-commissioned library, but there’s plenty of history, fiction, interiors, decorative arts and the classics. While Kinsey chooses every book for each collection, all of the libraries are a reflection of each client’s particular interests – topics such as astronomy, science fiction, mathematics, true crime and even alchemy. Clients include the likes of designer Donna Karan, hedge-fund manager Tom Marsico, and others that run the gamut from the well-to-do to the well-informed. For Oprah Winfrey, the ultimate bibliophile, he assembled a complete collection of first-edition Pulitzer Prize winners, and for another client, “The Best Books on Fashion and Style.”

Many clients are referred by eminent decorators and architects; the late Albert Hadley, Richard Keith Langham and Thomas Pheasant are just a handful. Mark Hampton gave him the introduction for his first library. David Kleinberg of David Kleinberg Design Associates regularly introduces clients to Marable. “I love how Kinsey sort of rustles up a collection of books that can 18

hristopher Spitzmiller’s iconic ceramic lamp designs draw inspiration from classical forms and traditional gem-like glazes. He began his career in Georgetown in Washington, D.C. where he worked out of an old schoolhouse near Dumbarton Oaks. Shortly thereafter, his work received critical acclaim and his reputation as a noteworthy ceramicist began to emerge. In the summers, he worked from Mecox Gardens in Southampton as an artist in residence and such designers as Albert Hadley, Richard Keith Langham and Suzanne Rheinstein began to commission his work. Since 1996, Christopher has been concentrating his efforts on his unique lamp designs. In the fall of 1999 after outgrowing his Washington studio he moved to New York City where he now creates his one-of-a-kind lamps with his crew of skilled artisans. continued on page 30 B irmingham B otanical G ardens

Hank Long, now President of Henry Sprott Long & Associates, joined the firm in 1977 after receiving a Bachelor of Architecture from Tulane University and a Masters of Architectural History from the University of Virginia. Hank and his colleagues continue the tradition started by his father by focusing on design excellence based on attention to detail, appropriate proportion and scale and sensitivity to proper sitting in all of their residential projects. This approach, coupled with a sincere concern for meeting their client’s program requirements, has helped the firm establish a reputation for designing classic homes in a variety of traditional architectural styles around the state of Alabama and the southeastern region of the United States. The book, The Residential Architecture of Henry Sprott Long & Associates, was published in 1991 and depicts many of the firm’s earlier projects. Over the years, Hank has had numerous projects featured in magazines including Southern Accents, Southern Living and Birmingham Home and Garden. Throughout its history, Henry Sprott Long & Associates has worked closely with clients, interior designers, landscape architects and other team members to create some of the region’s most beautiful residential projects. Hank is proud that the firm continues to add to its tradition of excellence. Hank Long

Pat has practiced her love of decorating since 1980. Pat graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Interior Design, and trained with several notable local designers including Emily Neal, Lynn Hawkins, Ruby Ansley, and Angi Proctor. Her mother often comments that while other children were drawing in coloring books, Pat was drawing floor plans. Pat has decorated homes in Birmingham, on the Gulf, and lake cabins on Lake Martin as well as Pumpkin Hollow Lake. Her work has been featured in Birmingham Home and Gardens, Victoria, Celebrate, and Over the Mountain Journal. Pat Hiden is accredited by the American Society of Interior Designers as a Professional member.

Currently located in Mountain Brook Village, Pat Hiden Interiors focuses on classic residential interiors punctuated with current influences. She combines her clients’ personal family antiques with updated pieces to create a comfortable yet elegant family home. Pat’s clients range from young couples starting their collections to those choosing their favorite pieces to showcase. Her philosophy is that beautiful interiors must include both timeless beauty and functionality for the whole family… including pets! While trends are fun and not to be ignored, classics never go out of style.

n the sense that he refuses to let his design work be branded, Taylor Dawson is indeed a maverick. “Brands work best for corn chips and cattle, not the consumer of architecture,” says Dawson. “I believe that each house I design should discover and celebrate the unique taste and lifestyle of each client. I don’t want my clients to feel like they’re living in a ‘Dawson home’ but rather in their own residential ideal.”
To that end, Dawson works closely with his clients during the design process. He won’t even consider beginning until he has determined his client’s aspirations for their home, from building functionality to everyday living preferences to personal family dreams. This information is factored in with the advantages determined from an in-depth analysis of the site and its surroundings to begin the design process, literally from the ground up. The built result - highly individualized and appropriate - speaks for itself. Dawson will be the first to say that architecture wasn’t his first career choice. After graduating from Alabama with a Business Degree, he officially joined his father’s construction firm where he had worked part time for years. However, Dawson soon realized that he would rather serve the built environment with thoughtful and skilled design, so he turned to Tulane University for his Architectural Degree. Dawson went on to work with world-renowned firms in London and Boston where his love for architecture was solidified, but 26

he believes it was his Master’s work at Princeton University that truly honed his skills and taught him how to create and refine his own design philosophy. Today, Taylor Dawson has developed a true following for his absolute lake-living solutions on Lake Martin, Alabama. However, his designs for primary residences, farm houses, hunting lodges, chapels and more all reflect the determination of this refreshingly humble architect to help his clients express and revel in their own taste and lifestyle, not an architect’s brand.

amie Inge recently moved to Birmingham from Mobile where she established Jamie Inge Interiors in 1996. She has owned several antique and accessory shops through the years in Pensacola, Mobile and most recently, Fairhope. She also had a short stint with Richard Keith Langham in New York City. Though she earned a degree from the University of Alabama in elementary education, her career focus was always on decorating. Inge has been very fortunate to work with clients who clearly knew the look and feel they wanted for their homes or offices, and creating that environment was usually an easy process for all parties. She was able to intuitively understand their ultimate wants, needs and visions and therefore create their spaces in those ways of design. Inge’s style is probably more traditional but she believes all styles are visually pleasing in their own way. She has always considered beautiful, one-of-a-kind accessories vital to a room, especially her love of early pottery and porcelains, such as: Majolica, Staffodshire, Dresden, Meissen and Rose Medallion. She also emphasizes that scale and aesthetic connection are of great importance and appreciation of luxurious, stunning fabrics is a given. Jamie Inge

raditions: we all have them; whether it’s a family gathering at a certain time of the year, hosting an event in your home with friends or celebrating a milestone. At the King’s House Antiques, we have always been about traditions; timeless, classical and elegant. Forty one years ago, Susan Kidd’s mother-in-law, Anne, created a lovely shop filled with the finest quality items available from dealers located stateside and abroad. In 1988, Kidd began her career at King’s House Antiques, working a few days a week, in a field she was unfamiliar with. She enrolled at Southern Institute of Interior Design, received her degree in design and became an adjunct instructor for 13 years, teaching the history of period furnishing, antiques and architecture and restoration. She found traveling overseas to purchase items for the shop exciting; seeing items in their natural environment and how they are being used today. She found it educational to learn from the dealers and visit homes, chateaus and manor houses filled with antique treasures. Over the years, King’s House Antiques continues to strive for quality pieces that can incorporate into homes of various generations.

can often seem sterile or cold. A mahogany piece can give that touch of elegance to any space. Accessories, of course, are equally as important. Mirrors, chandeliers, porcelains and paintings certainly make a statement, whether you’re a collector or a minimalist. Collections certainly personalize a home whereas one object can make a major statement.

Each one-of-a-kind lamp is set in a hand-turned hardwood base, which is water gilt with 23k yellow gold or 9k white gold for a silver finish. Currently, Christopher is expanding his designs to table ware and other ceramic accessories. Christopher’s work is often featured in celebrated publications such as Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Departures, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He has had the honor of making lamps for the current Oval Office, the past two White House Administrations, as well the Blair House and other distinguished American homes. When not in the Studio, Christopher can be found at his farm in Millbrook, NY gardening, bee keeping, making jam or tending to his flock of heritage breed chickens. allery 1930 was opened in 2010 by artist Meredith Keith, her sister, Laura Vogtle, and their mother, Kathryn Keith. Initially the gallery highlighted the work of Meredith, as other artists were carefully considered. What began as a pop-up shop for a single artist, however, quickly became the gallery for the most au courant art. The unique architecture of the building with its beautiful white walls was simply too appealing to artists and art aficionados in and around Birmingham. As a result, Gallery 1930’s stable of artists has grown significantly in recent years and now includes some twenty artists. Like the building itself, which was once a Mercedes-Benz repair shop and more recently the office of a renowned Birmingham architect, the gallery and its art is ever-evolving. The goal of the gallery owners and present codirectors, Amanda Morrissette and Frances Nichols, is to represent fresh, contemporary art that is always current but never trendy.

Similar to what one might find within the walls of Gallery 1930, the gallery at the Art, Jewelry, and Antiques show will offer varied and diverse work with mediums including painting, photography and sculpture. “Each rug has a story.” To Christin Terrell, it’s more than just a clever line—it’s the reason she comes into work every day. Because where the rest of us just see rich, beautiful colors and intricate patterns, Christin sees every superstition, every ancient custom, and every silent prayer woven into the rugs of King’s House. The beauty of their origins is what Christin loves most about our rugs: “Immersing yourself in the where, the who, and the why … I can’t imagine anything more beautiful.”

Although her roots are in interior design, Claire Drummond discovered that her true passion was rugs. Everything else was just becoming background noise compared to finding the perfect floorcovering. Thus, Claire’s passion and expertise in rugs lies in their unique and elegant designs—and the way they become part of the ultimate design of a client’s home. She truly loves finding the perfect rug to match a client’s furniture, fabrics and, ultimately, their personality. bbgardens . org / antiques

ibby Greene’s love of old comes from a deep appreciation of fine antiques. Her interiors are classic and timeless with an emphasis on function for each home. By mixing the old and new she creates comfortable yet sophisticated rooms in an effortless way that makes it all come together. Attention to detail along with an eye for color was woven into Greene’s heart as a child. Sitting by her grandfather as he drafted house plans, she played with his paint decks and designed rooms for her pretend clients. She is a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Environments. atti Woods Interiors was established in 2008 with an emphasis on residential spaces. Patti Woods’ educational background includes a degree in Graphic Design and Art. Her past work experience includes both fashion and interiors photo styling, as well as an illustrator, graphic designer, and fine artist. While working as a graphic artist, she was always informally helping friends with their homes, beach houses, or staging parties. Eventually, due to her husband, Philip Woods, a residential contractor, she was brought on board to consult informally on projects and have been working ever since. At Patti Woods Interiors, it is essential to create environments that both complement and suit the lifestyle of the client, while creating something timeless and comfortable. Balance, light, color, and art are a part of every design, along with clean and simple furnishings. It is important while achieving the project goal, that there is always a synthesis of the architecture and interiors, along with the client’s desires, to create a home that is both beautiful and personal. Ben Shepard and Darla Davis
Continued from page 38.
S
hepard and Davis began as a small studio with the hopes of producing sophisticated and approachable design. As time has passed, Darla Davis and Ben Shepard have realized that remaining small allows them to have an intimate knowledge of every detail on each project resulting in a continuity of design. Darla and Ben have always been interested in the concept of what makes a space special and they strive to create special spaces in every project. As children, we simply or naively gravitate to a space, maybe because it holds the best natural light or has the best hiding spot. Those things done by instinct as a child, can evolve into thoughtful consideration of how we can live in a space as an adult. We may still seek out the place with the richest light or the coziest alcove. Darla and Ben both grew up appreciating their heritage and loving the things that they knew were touched by the past. For them, this means appreciating the simplicity or proportion of a perfectly aged farmhouse as equal to that of a elegantly detailed home. This should not be interpreted to mean that Shepard and Davis are limited to a traditional design. In fact, they both have a great love for modern design and feel most comfortable mixing elements of modern and traditional design, materials and furnishings. Shepard and Davis believe design is not about ego and that design is not intended to be a way to leave their imprint. It should be more about using suitable materials, comfortable detailing and unique solutions to meet the individual needs of their clients. It should be about how a structure and its environment compliment one another. Shepard and Davis have work that has been featured in Interiors, Southern Living, Birmingham Home and Garden and B-Metro with upcoming works in other national publications.

herri Pitts has been in love with architecture for as long as she can remember. The discovery for her was in elementary school when an architect visited her class and gave a slideshow presentation of buildings he visited during his Paris vacation. What he did was more than just give a slideshow to a group of 10 year olds, he introduced her to the world of design and ignited a passion. That experience had a profound and lasting impact and set her on a determined course to be an architect.
Cherri Pitts
Cherri lived in Arizona at the time, but later returned to her birthplace of Louisiana for high school and college where she studied Architecture and Design at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. After practicing Architecture for several years, she found her way to Birmingham, Ala. and knew she had found her permanent home. Once settled, she formed the design firm of Studio C Architecture & Interiors and set up her Studio in the historic Magic City Casket Building in the ‘Design District’ of Southside, Birmingham, where she has been for over seven years. Cherri founded Studio C with three simple philosophies: take good care of your clients, create timeless and meaningful designs and enjoy what you do. Cherri pays close attention to detail and listens intently to client’s dreams and desires and works to translate those into romantic and enduring spaces that her clients never want to leave.

The primary focus of Studio C’s work is custom residential and private retreat homes along with the occasional boutique commercial project for clients that require a more personalized design approach. That first encounter with architecture left a strong imprint that is still evident in her design today. Whether the language of the architecture is traditional or modern, crafting beautiful spaces for those who occupy and inspire the design is paramount to Cherri. With projects throughout the region, Cherri’s work has been published in Birmingham Home & Garden, Birmingham magazine, B-Metro, Southern Living and No’Ala Magazine.

hether Rebecca Hawkins is searching for chic furnishings that won’t sacrifice “sinkinto” comfort for style, hunting for oneof-a-kind accessories to add interest to a bookcase or mantel or space planning for a luxurious master bath renovation, she leaves no page or stone unturned. Finding the unpolished gem of a table in a dusty antiques shop or picking the perfect fabric from an endless pile of swatches is second nature to her. Rebecca first honed her decorating sensibility—and gathered a seemingly infinite library of resources—as the market and decorating editor for Southern Accents, where she styled interiors and produced photo shoots, and covered industry markets from Paris to New York to bring the best products to the magazine’s readers. She has also contributed her visual talents to numerous other publications including Southern Living, Coastal Living, flower and Neiman Marcus’s Entrée. Opening Rebecca Hawkins Interiors six years ago was an instinctive new chapter in her career. “Creating rooms has a lot in common with composing beautiful photographs — you must have a balance of color, good scale and compelling focal points,” says Rebecca. “The big difference is that houses are not static like an image on a magazine page. They need to breathe and evolve, reflect the people who live in them and above all, really function well. Every house should tell a story.”

Although Rebecca appreciates a cheery Lee Jofa chintz as much as the modern lines of a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair, bringing the dreams and vision of the client to life will always be her primary focus. “I can be drawn to the layered look of John Fowler one day and the minimalism of John Pawson the next,” she says, “but ultimately it’s the homeowners’ house, and it’s their story that becomes my starting point.” The decorating genre may be classic or contemporary, but the theme that weaves throughout will always reflect Rebecca’s key elements of style: the mark of an artisan’s hand, an unerring eye for high-quality craftsmanship and punctuation points here and there of the unexpected. All tell the tale of the inspired home.

hen Pat Camp and Staci Thompson met, they knew they had something in common. Both were University of Alabama graduates; Pat a History major and Staci a Design and Fashion Merchandising major. The competition in a group shop showed them their passions were also the same - a love of antiques and their past.
The provenance and the hunt for a piece’s past solidified a friendship that turned into a partnership. “We love knowing the past about a piece in our shop, something about its story adds romance to its life and gives it new purpose for the present,” Camp said. Preserving a piece of history and adding it to your home makes it a wonderful heirloom, a memory seeker and a present day treasure. The Preservationists can’t stand to see something neglected and ignored; bringing it into modern day use adds new beginnings, preserving our past and future. new excitement. The Preservationists believe that your family’s heirloom can be a great treasure paired with a period piece to complement the new pieces in your home. They try to help make room for those special collections and finds that give a home a one-of-a-kind look and special meaning.
Pat Camp & Staci Thompson

Camp says, “I never buy anything that’s not older than I am to add to my collections.” Thompson has a passion for china, porcelain, pottery - trinkets as her boys remind her. “I never stop to think, do I have a place for this?” Thompson says. It’s always a special day for a hunt for Camp and Thompson, for friends, customers, for each other. When they discover something special for someone, it’s intoxicating. And it’s the glue that binds them as friends and business partners, a romantic spirit drawn to preserving things from the past and finding them a new home. Pat and her husband Ehney Camp and Staci and her husband Ben Thompson are also involved in preservation within the state. Ben and Pat both serve on the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation and the Birmingham Historical Society. The couples also are supporters of Birmingham Museum of Art; all four are passionate members of The Friends of American Art. Ben and Staci are involved in the preservation and ideals of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Both women have had their collections and homes published in periodicals.

MEET OUR HONOREES
A
HONORING Lyndra & Bill Daniel s Birmingham Botanical Gardens celebrates our 50th Anniversary, we proudly honor Bill and Lyndra Daniel, for their part in helping us achieve this important milestone. For over 20 years, the Daniels have donated gifts of service and financial support to The Gardens, through their personal philanthropy and the Daniel Foundation of Alabama.
With Bill as Chairman and Lyndra as President, the Foundation, established in 1978, strives to make a “measureable impact,” funding “non-profit partners with effective leadership and track records of success” to advance its mission “to strengthen communities within Alabama and improve the quality of life for citizens.” The Foundation also identifies cultural and community assets as a major area of focus, noting their importance in creating vibrant communities and making “community heritage, culture and historic preservation” and “projects that conserve green space and improve access to nature” funding priorities. In addition to The Gardens being a perfect match for their philanthropic priorities, the Daniels involvement grew from Lyndra’s love of flowers, botany and nature, which she credits in part to childhood hunting trips with her father while growing up in Louisiana. The LSU graduate, and former Miss Louisiana, met Bill on a blind date and moved to Birmingham after they were married in 1976, where her community involvement and interests eventually led to her service on The Gardens’ Board of Directors from 2004 until 2009. For Bill, community involvement is a continuation of his family heritage, echoing the sentiment of Hugh Daniel, Bill’s father, who, when asked about his many community contributions, replied “It is one’s calling to be a part – to participate.” With their involvement in The Gardens and interest in community heritage and historic preservation, it was only natural that the Daniels expressed concern when hearing that the Conservatory, a historical landmark designed in 1962 and considered to be one of the last of its kind, might not be structurally sound and might have to be torn down. Their concern ultimately led to their decision to be leading donors when the iconic structure was determined to be sound, and The Gardens decided to embark on Phase I of Conservatory improvements in 2012. The Daniels were joined by other “Leading Lights” donors, who contributed a total of $1.3 million for the Conservatory’s infrastructure improvements. Due to his background in construction, which started at age fourteen when he went to work sweeping floors for Daniel Construction Company, an international firm started in 1935 by his uncle in South Carolina, Bill took Continued on page 52. 50 | A ntiques

particular interest in the “nuts and bolts” of the renovation. After attending The Citadel, he settled in Birmingham to work for Daniel Corporation, initially founded in 1964 to be a real estate and development vehicle for Daniel Construction. With his knowledge, he was a valuable participant in the highly technical and specialized Conservatory project. With Phase 1 completed, the Conservatory reopened in February of this year, providing not only a beautiful and historical focal point for The Gardens, but also a venue for educating the more than 11,000 children who attend Discovery Field Trips each year on the importance of worldwide natural resource conservation.

BIRMINGHAM BOTANICAL GARDENS
Discovery Field Trip
BEYOND THE BEAUTY
W
e’re more than a pretty face. Sure, Alabama’s largest living museum offers some of the state’s most scenic trails over 67.5 acres and among more than 12,000 different living plants in over 25 unique gardens. And we’ve opened our gates from dawn until dusk for 50 years, allowing the citizens of the Magic City a free opportunity to share magical moments with the ones they love.
Butterfly Awareness Day
We’re the most visited free attraction in the state of Alabama, and our scenic backdrop lures many visitors from dates, proms, weddings, engagements and photo sessions. But our mission, our mission, our reason for being, is to educate the public about plants, gardens and the environment. Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens works hard, year-round, to raise money to fund free, curriculum-based Discovery Field Trips to Birmingham-area schoolchildren. Our award-winning, flagship program is designed to meet the Alabama State Course of Study on six elementary school (K – 6) science themes: plant propagation, nutrient cycling (George Washington Carver), Native Americans, tropical rainforests, interdependence (Barber Alabama Woodlands) and trees. The program has now expanded to include middle school students with the “Plants: Inside Out!” program, which is made possible by the James Milton and Sallie R. Johnson Foundation. Middle school students discover photosynthesis through hands-on science labs while outside in our living museum.

Dirt Dash
These programs are offered to schools and students and are led by trained docents. Over the last year, the programs have reached and served over 11,000 students, a new high. Much of these funds are raised through our special events, like Antiques at The Gardens. Because of the public’s participation and generosity in these events, nearly all the students of those who participated were able to do so absolutely free, including transportation expenses. By bringing the classroom to life, we’re laying the educational foundation for future engineers, botanists, doctors, chefs, chemists, innovators and other like-minded individuals. We’re also proud to have created the first Horticultural Therapy program in Alabama, a program still in relative infancy and our fastest growing.
In 2012, the program evolved into Plant Adventures, an inclusive program that explores the relationship between people and place. Plant Adventures calls one of our newest gardens home, the Arrington Plant Adventure Zone, an educational garden that serves as a base for the program. Plant Adventures has reached out to hundreds of participants from Children’s Hospital, United Cerebral Palsy, the Birmingham Independent Living Center and Kirkwood by the River. The program’s primary tenet is that gardening is good for the mind, body and soul. As the program continues to enhance the lives of its participants, it will promote health and wellbeing for all, using an inclusive model designed to help foster participation, access, choice and relationships.

Certificate in Native Plant Studies
Discovery Field Trips and Plant Adventures are just two cogs in our educational machine. We are home to the largest public horticultural library in the country. Now in its fourth year, our Certificate in Native Plant Studies program remains a unique educational opportunity available for just one class or completion of the entire program. And we’ve made no mention of Earth Day at The Gardens, Spring and Fall Plant Sales, Garden Explorations, Summer Camps at The Gardens, Flicks Amongst the Flowers, and our partnerships with organizations like Fresh Air Family, Community Garden Coalition and the Audubon Society. It’s difficult to demonstrate The Gardens depth with words – depth that would go unexplored without our loyal supporters, volunteers, members, donors and visitors. Come see us. Fall in love with everything we have to offer the Magic City.
