As the days get ever longer and summer beckons, I hope you are taking advantage of the extra time nature is giving us to be outside. Whether in your garden or ours, the frantic spring pace is no doubt slowing a bit. I hope we have a respite of nice weather before things really heat up – we all deserve that, don’t we? Spring sure was busy here with a string of lectures, classes, a successful Spring Plant Sale, nursery visits and field trips that have come and gone. I would like to thank all of our Friends who came out to our two Spencer Lectures, Sakura Matsui (Cherry Blossom Festival), the plant sale, Earth Day at The Gardens, donor tours or classes. When you show up, you not only enrich your lives with knowledge, great plants and beautiful garden scenes, but you show your support for us, and we really appreciate that. For us, events like those don’t happen without devoted volunteers who work hand in glove with our professional staff to plan and execute them. Each plant group at the Spring Plant Sale has one or more chairs, many of whom have decades of experience running this huge enterprise. Many of them, and their volunteer “crews” work year-round to orchestrate the sale. Without their help, these important events, enjoyed by so many, simply wouldn’t be possible. We extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the hardworking chairs and committees who are far too numerous to name. Finally, please read on and take special note of our wonderful slate of Children’s Summer Programs. There is sure to be something interesting for the junior gardener or naturalist in your life. Last year, almost each one of these specially-crafted programs had a waiting list, so sign up early for the best chance at getting a slot.

Pardon and Celebrate Our Progress!

If you have been by The Gardens this spring, you probably noticed construction fences and caution tape—evidence of generous gifts at work. The Conservatory Phase I Improvements are in full swing and, at the western entry to the Hess Camellia Garden, the new Sarah Jones Arbor, and related work, is almost finished. In the Japanese Gardens, we have conserved the Taylor Gate and the Moore Pavilion and have upgraded electrical service. The new Thorne Amphitheater and the just-completed Simmie Kayser Cherry Walk delight visitors daily. Come and admire our progress. Our master plan includes many more significant projects that need to be funded. For example, when the Conservatory reopens this fall, it will need new exhibits. We are already working with designers to see what that will entail. Phase II of the Conservatory Improvements will also include new houses on each end of the existing structure and a redesign of the approach to the building and its flanking terraces. One of the next steps in our Japanese Garden Renovation Plan is to reactivate the stream which has been dry for over a decade. We have a new pump, but need monies to repair the stream bed. If you would like to help make these projects reality, do contact us and let us show you the details on site. A garden is never finished―especially when the garden is Alabama’s largest living museum and is open to the public 365 days a year. We are mindful that your memberships, the proceeds from our plant sales and fundraising events, annual donations, tribute gifts, grants from foundations and corporations and our partnership with the city of Birmingham all help us to keep The Gardens and our education programs going. Mapping Your Tributes Birmingham Botanical Gardens holds a lot of meaning for a lot of people. As such, many people choose to dedicate a tribute tree, bench or artwork to honor those for whom The Gardens meant so much. Soon we will make it even easier for families to visit the tribute they established for their loved ones at The Gardens by making the tribute viewable online! This March, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens began using GPS technology to catalog all of the tributes throughout The Gardens. All named tributes will be placed into Google Earth so families will be able to click on the location of their tribute and see a picture of it no matter where they are in the world. Donor Relations Officer Drew Rickel and UAB intern Marlee Hayes (pictured at left) are spearheading the project with help from Volunteer Coordinator Taylor Steele. Bobby McAlpine to headline 2013 Red Diamond Lecture Series

Lecture returns to kick off annual Antiques at The Gardens event in October The Gardens welcomes architect and author Bobby McAlpine as the featured speaker of the Red Diamond Lecture Series at October’s Antiques at The Gardens. On Thursday, October 3, McAlpine will take the stage of the Linn-Henley Lecture Hall at 1:30 p.m. for his talk. Admission to the lecture is $30 and includes admission to Birmingham’s premier antiques show, featuring tastemakers and antiques dealers from around the country. Public show hours for the 2013 edition of Antiques at The Gardens, which will take place in the Garden Center, are: October 3 from 1 – 5 p.m., October 4 from 10 – 5 p.m., October 5 from 10 – 5 p.m. and October 6 from 11 – 3 p.m. In addition to authoring The Home Within Us: Romantic Houses, Evocative Rooms, McAlpine is the founding principal architecht of McAlpine Tankersley Architecture, a Montgomery-based partnership with Greg Tankersley, John Sease and Chris Tippett. An Alabama-native, McAlpine’s work has been featured in Veranda, House Beautiful, Southern Accents, Arts & Antiques, Southern Living, House and Garden (both US and British editions), Metropolitan Home, Traditional Home, The New York Times and on Home and Garden Television (HGTV). Volunteering at The Gardens:

Designed for “Families” Big and Small! Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator

Volunteers are the life blood of many non-profit organizations and play an integral role here at The Gardens. There is in today’s society, a growing trend and focus on parents and children volunteering together as a family. Volunteering as a unit strengthens family relationships and the term “family” is now being used loosely to include students with their teachers. At The Gardens, we have volunteers that are primarily made of the typical family unit, however, we see many groups that come as a “family” of sorts to give their time together, work together and strengthen their own relationships through volunteer experience. A study done by Volunteer Calgary in 2010 found many positive gains through immediate or extended family group volunteer events. Children’s value systems strengthen because they are actively working and sharing this

experience with a parent or guardian. Both child and adult see each other as life-long learners and givers to a cause. Volunteering provides a fun way for families to make memories together while making significant contributions to their communities. It also teaches children the values of kindness and giving back. Family members use their talents to work on an issue they feel passionate about. Serving together builds problem-solving skills and strengthens communication within the whole family and or group. Named in honor of the renowned German orchidologist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, Reichenbachia was a collaboration between Sander and English landscape painter Henry George Moon (1857-1905), who created most of the illustrations. Work on Reichenbachia began in 1886 and lasted until 1890, with the first volume being published in 1888, and the subsequent three volumes being published in two-year intervals. The Library at The Gardens is the only library in the State of Alabama to have this rare collection. We encourage you to stop by the Archives and Rare Book Room to take a look at this treasure. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Alabama’s State Wildflower is oakleaf hydrangea, Hydrangea quercifolia. Found throughout the state in dry, partially-shaded woodlands, in cultivation it is a first-rate, four-season deciduous shrub offering handsome late spring flowers, bold foliage, warm fall colors and exfoliating cinnamon bark. Locally, the cultivar ‘Snowflake’ (bottom of page) is to many people synonymous with the word “hydrangea.” Introduced by Aldridge Nursery, the plant originated as a chance seedling in the wild, and was brought to the attention of Eddie Aldridge’s father who made the initial propagation. Inflorescences of normal oakleaf hydrangea are composed of sterile flowers with large sepals (fused petal-like structures), on the perimeter of snowcone-like structures; these more or less surround the tiny fertile flowers inside. The mutation (could be more than one) that makes ‘Snowflake’ remarkable resulted in the loss of certain reproductive structures in the once-fertile flowers (making them sterile), and the multiplication of sepals in the sterile flowers. It results in sepals that are densely stacked in layers of a dozen or more. As it begins to expands, the sepal “structure” is initially pale green before turning white (left). As they age (becoming more basal) the lower sepals begin to blush pink and pale tan before darkening to brown. Numerous specimens of ‘Snowflake’ here at The Gardens attest to its popularity. This mutation makes a beautiful plant, but is an evolutionary dead end as ‘Snowflake’ bears no fertile flowers; the mutation cannot be passed on through sexual means (seeds). As evidenced by two additional cultivars with characteristics similar to ‘Snowflake’ the mutation, which occurs throughout the plant and not as a bud or branch sport, has apparently happened more than once. ‘Shannon’ was discovered by Theodore Klein at his Yew Dell Nursery in Crestview, KY, in the 1980s. ‘Sumatanga’, named after the camp at which it was found, was discovered in the last decade just west of Gadsden. We have young plants of both at The Gardens. While it is too soon for anything but a first-glance observation, for us the flowers of ‘Shannon’ are the smallest and most open of the three. Flowers of ‘Sumatanga’ (which may also be called ‘Starlight’ or ‘Sumatanga Star’) fade to pink sooner than the Three lovely mutants (left-right): Hydrangea others. FRUITS AND NUTS – Continue spray program. Keep grass from around trees and strawberries. Peaches and apples can still be budded. SHRUBS – Newly planted shrubs need extra care now and in coming weeks. Don’t spray with oil emulsions when temperature is above 85 °F. LAWNS – Now is the best time to start lawns from seed. Water new lawns as needed to prevent drying. Keep established lawns actively growing by watering fertilizing and mowing. Spray weeds in lawns with proper herbicide. ROSES – Spray or dust for insects and diseases. Fertilize monthly with complete fertilizer or rose special. Containergrown plants in flower may be planted. Prune climbing roses after the first big flush offlowering. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Late plantings of bedding plants still have time to produce. Watch for insects on day lilies. BULBS – Summer bulbs started in containers may still be planted. Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Do not let seedheads form on tulips and other spring flowering bulbs. MISCELLANEOUS – Mulch new shrub plantings if not already done. Avoid drying out new shrub, tree and lawn plantings. VEGETABLE SEED – Plant heat-loving and tender vegetables. Start cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and celery in coldframe for fall garden. VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potatoes.

FRUITS AND NUTS – Layer grapes and continue spray programs. Thin apples and peaches if too thick. SHRUBS – Lace bugs may be a problem on azaleas, pyracanthas, dogwoods, cherry laurels, and other shrubs. Water as needed. Fertilize now. Keep long shoots from developing by pinching out tips. Good time to take cuttings from semi-mature wood for rooting. LAWNS – Follow a schedule of fertilization and watering. Lawns should be mowed weekly Planting may continue if soil is moist. Continue weed spraying if necessary. ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Keep old flower heads removed to promote continued flowering. Plant garden mums if not already in. For compact mums, keep tips pinched out. Watch for insects and diseases. BULBS – Foliage may be removed from spring bulbs if it has yellowed and is becoming dry. Watch for aphids and thrips on summer bulbs. MISCELLANEOUS – If scale insects continue on shrubs, use materials other than oils. Set houseplants on porch or outdoors in shade and pay close attention to the need for water. If desired, air layer Courtesy of houseplants.
