Please make sure to mark your calendars for our summer movie series, Flicks Among the Flowers, beginning later this month. We’ll screen two modern classics (meaning: from the 80s!) and finish off with something new, but from “long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” Read on for details. We had a wonderful April and saw almost over 7,500 of our supporters at the Spring Plant Sale. Thanks to all the shoppers who came out, the volunteers that helped out (most were shoppers, too) and to the folks at Brookwood Village for providing us with the space and the great location. I’m always inspired by this event – 100,000 plants going out to make Birmingham, and a few other locales as well, greener places. Over 1,300 people came to Earth Day at The Gardens, too, and enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about our programs and partners, some who work with us year-round. As we say farewell to another spring and move into another summer, don’t forget to provide extra water to new plant-outs, even the ones you planted last fall, when high heat and dry days start piling up. But make sure to feel the soil a few inches down. Most plants like to dry out between waterings. You might see a wilting plant, but that can be a symptom of overwatering and drought stress, too. Sometimes, our heavy clay soils can hold a surprising amount of moisture. That’s not always a bad thing – just think about all of the different plants that thrive here. Classes for adults continue through the summer and very soon our hugely popular Children’s Summer Camps and Gross-Out Camps will begin. The latter is offered in a partnership with Fresh Air Family, and is now in its 9th year. Even though there are a number of individual camps, they fill up very quickly – I hope there’s room left for the kids in your life! Lastly, more and more is happening on social media platforms (that is not new news), and The Gardens is there! If you’re not following us on Facebook and Twitter, sign on today. And make sure to post your Gardens’ photos to our Instagram account; we might feature you in a future publication.

This year members will head to Wetumpka to tour Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum. “Alabama’s little corner of Greece,” which features twenty acres of flora and classical sculptures is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Inscoe. After touring Jasmine Hill and enjoying a catered box lunch, members will travel to Petals From The Past, in Jemison, to view their display gardens filled with antique roses, heirloom shrubs and hard-to-find perennials. Of course, there will also be time to shop! This trip is open to all members of The Gardens. Each member is allowed to bring one non-member. Your fee includes roundtrip transportation and lunch. The Gardens welcomes new Special Events Coordinator Heather Bell Heather Bell has joined the team at Birmingham Botanical Gardens as the Special Events Coordinator, bringing with her over 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit community. Prior to joining Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Heather worked at The Wilds (Cumberland, Ohio) as the Operations Coordinator where she had an operational and philanthropic role. While at The Wilds, Heather was responsible for special events, overseeing the luxury overnight accommodations and staff of Nomad Ridge & The Lodge at The Wilds, and acting as media liaison. Most recently, Heather worked for the Alabama Kidney Foundation (Birmingham, Alabama) as part of the development and communications team, forwarding kidney disease awareness through giving campaigns, publications and social media. Heather is a graduate of Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) with a Bachelor’s in Geography & Environmental Science and minor in Latin American Studies. Heather is involved in the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve’s Young Professionals Board, and is its acting Secretary. Good Things Growing… In The Gardens Fred Spicer, chief executive officer

Most gardeners consider flowers as important elements in almost any garden, even though, for most plants that are not annuals, flowers are about the most fleeting of ornamental attributes. Once they’re pollinated, they get right on with making fruits and seeds. What is more valuable is a plant with a tidy growth habit and excellent foliage through most months of the year to complement its blooms. Throw in a second wave of flowering and make it a eco-friendly southeastern US native and you have the subject of this month’s column: Stokes’ aster, Stokesia laevis (pronounce it: stokes-e-uh). Stokes’ aster grows to about 15” tall and wide, in tight clumps of dark green, 8” long, oblong leaves; a bonus: some are held in an overwintering evergreen rosette. Starting in mid- to late May and often lasting through mid-June, blue-purple flowers are borne on numerous slender stalks that rise several inches above the foliage; the flower buds look like tiny white balls for a time. The leafy structures (bracts) that surround the flowers look spiny to the touch, but they are soft. [top right] Often described as looking like cornflowers or Scabiosa (no help unless you know what those plants look like) the flowers are 3-4” wide, flat-topped and extremely frilly. Like all members of the aster family, Stokes’ aster has ray flowers at the perimeter and disc flowers in the center. Cultivars are available in clearer shades of blue and deeper purple, too, as well as white and yellow (cream). In our area, however, these tend to flop mightily, and ‘Peachie’s Pick’ (more blue than purple) is the local favorite for being stiffly upright and flop-less.

Deadheading brings out another (much lighter) production of flowers, about mid-September or earlier. [bottom left] If you’re not a native plant enthusiast, then just think of this herbaceous perennial as being as refined a garden plant as there is, but with a goodly amount of tenacity and excellent heat tolerance. It’s a plant that is as easily at home in a woodland garden of dappled shade [bottom right] as it is in a more structured border or dense mass (preferably where it receives at least some shade in the afternoon). Like many plants adapted to woodland edges and clearings, bright light is essential, but blazing sun is troublesome. Heavy soil is as well, so good drainage is important, especially in winter, when this plant is easily killed by rot if too damp. This may seem odd for a plant found naturally in moist places, but many sites that are moist have well-drained soils, too; it’s not an oxymoron! Still, Stokes’ aster is much more drought tolerant than given credit. Enjoy!

Volunteer Spotlight Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School

The education staff at The Gardens h as been happy to welcome three studentvolunteersfrom the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School work study program for the spring semester. Katie Stahlhut has returnedfor her fourth and final semester of work study with The Gardensbefore graduation. In February, Katie placed third at the Alabama Junior Academy of Science paper reading and Gorgas scholarship competition with her findings from an experiment she conducted in her summer internship at The Gardens. This fall Katie will be studying biology at the University of Central Florida’s Burnett Honors College on a National Merit Scholarship. Chaney Hicks has joinedus for her second semester and Roshell Rosaes for her first semester. Both Chaney and Roshell are in their junior year and we look forward to their return in the fall of their senior year. All three students bring an impressive e nthusiasm to learn and a keen interest in scienceto their work. This semester the students are working with Plant Adventures Program Specialist, Brooke McMinn,on several projects throughout The Gardens. Most notably, the students are working with Brooke and Kaul Wildflower Curator, John Manion,on an Alabama Plant Conservation Alliance program to monitor and conserve the endangered species Asplenium tutwilerae. Also known as Tutwiler’s spleenwort,A. tutwilerae is a tiny fern that, as one of the rarest plants in the world, is one of Alabama’s greatest endemic treasures. The students are learning about these unassuming yet dynamic plants by studying their propagation and c ultivation. Along with library staff, the students are helping to maintaining a small but thriving population of ferns in two terrariums housed in The Gardens’ library [top]. They are also working on sterile propagation of the fern’s spores in our micro-propagation lab [bottom]. At The Gardens we know that studentsbestlearn science by actively engaging in the practices of science. Thesestudents aren’t just working with scientists, they’re working as scientists, designing and conducting experiments to help determine the best growing conditions for the finicky ferns. They’re practicing t he principles of laboratory safety and the language of scientific writing. They’re asking original questions, conducting investigations,collecting data and sharing ideas with peers. As our volunteer scientists, Katie, Chaney and Roshell are gaining experience for themselves and knowledge for us all!

SHRUBS – Newly planted shrubs need extra care now and in coming weeks. Don’t spray with oil emulsions when temperature is above 85 °F. LAWNS – Now is the best time to start lawns from seed. Water new lawns as needed to prevent drying. Keep established lawns actively growing by watering fertilizing and mowing. Spray weeds in lawns with proper herbicide. ROSES – Spray or dust for insects and diseases. Fertilize monthly with complete fertilizer or rose special. Container-grown plants in flower may be planted. Prune climbing roses after the first big flush offlowering.

LAWNS – Follow a schedule of fertilization and watering. Lawns should be mowed weekly Planting may continue if soil is moist. Continue weed spraying if necessary.

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Keep old flower heads removed to promote continued flowering. Plant garden mums if not already in. For compact mums, keep tips pinched out. Watch for insects and diseases.

•

BULBS – Foliage may be removed from spring bulbs if it has yellowed and is becoming dry. Watch for aphids and thrips on summer bulbs.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Late plantings of bedding plants still have time to produce. Watch for insects on day lilies.

•

BULBS – Summer bulbs started in containers may still be planted. Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Do not let seedheads form on tulips and other spring flowering bulbs.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – If scale insects continue on shrubs, use materials other than oils. Set houseplants on porch or outdoors in shade and pay close attention to the need for water. If desired, air layer houseplants.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – Mulch new shrub plantings if not already done. Avoid drying out new shrub, tree and lawn plantings.

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant beans, field peas, pumpkins, squash, corn, cantaloupes and watermelons.
