I hope that, as you read this, Birmingham is shaking off the effects of a rather cold winter, with several extended periods of sub-freezing temperatures & a surprising snowfall that caught everyone off-guard in late January. We like to say that The Gardens is many things to many people, but as far as we know, that storm marked the first time “warming station” made it to the list. Normally, with ample warning time, the Garden Center is closed during such events. But with that storm, about 20 staff were quickly marooned, to be joined throughout the day & evening by roughly 50 additional guests, including several volunteers, all of whom spent the night & half the following day. While not really trained for such a role, staff & volunteers alike jumped right in, enthusiastically, & made everyone feel as much at home as was possible. They kept spirits high, cooked & served three hearty meals, even popped popcorn & showed a movie. It certainly helped that we were a block away from the fully-stocked Western Supermarket (thanks for letting us take that buggy!), & that one of our board members (you know who you are!) braved the icy roads & dropped off toothbrushes & toothpaste in the morning. But it was the people that work at The Gardens – the staff of The Friends, the City of Birmingham, & the Alabama Cooperative Extension System who did thousands of really nice things – that made the difference to those away from home. I’ve never been more proud of where I work & with whom. Please enjoy this issue of The Garden Dirt & don’t miss all of the exciting events, activities & classes we’ve packed into the coming Spring. We’re very pleased that the Spring Plant Sale is back at Century Plaza! Come for the Preview Party or Member’s-Only Sale on Thursday evening & choose a free Signature Plant with a special golden theme, in honor of our 50th Anniversary Celebration. Birmingham Botanical Gardens & Birmingham’s Freedom Oaks Henry Hughes, director of education

On September 11, 2013, Birmingham Botanical Gardens planted over 100 “Freedom Oak” seedlings in Birmingham parks on the 50 Years Forward Empowerment Week Day of Service. This included the culmination of a one-thousand tree planting project in George Ward Park, begun in 2009 by Birmingham’s Little Garden Club & Red Mountain Garden Club. Those clubs approached The Gardens with the idea of collecting seeds from venerable specimen trees in Birmingham Parks & using them for a multiyear re-forestation project. Gary Burley, a member of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens board of directors, knew of this effort & connected Mayor William A. Bell, Sr. with the group, allowing the entities a noble platform to combine their efforts. The Day of Service also marked the beginning of a new phase of ongoing tree planting in Birmingham’s new & historic parks & in communities, such as Pratt City, that lost significant portions of their urban forest during the tornadoes of April 27, 2011.

Following the Day of Service, more tree planting took place in Avondale Park in October, 2013, in tornadodamaged North Smithfield in November of 2013 & in Red Mountain Park in February of 2014. Planting “Freedom Oaks” will continue in the fall & winter of 2014 - 15 & beyond. The central idea of planting Freedom Oaks is to ensure a healthy canopy of native trees in Birmingham area parks & communities 50 years forward, to promote community volunteerism & to educate, particularly young people, about the importance of planting native trees in their communities, both for themselves & for future generations.

“Freedom Oaks” are unique in that they are grown from the seed of Birmingham’s oldest & largest native oak trees, some as many as two-hundred years old. They represent the historic native forest from which Birmingham grew & they impart a unique character to Birmingham’s neighborhoods & parks, much as the architecture does. Black oak, Quercus velutina, & white oak, Q. alba, are the two iconic species that make up the backbone of Birmingham’s native forest. Seeds of these & other native oak species are collected by community volunteers & taken to Birmingham Botanical Gardens where they are propagated & grown into seedlings. One year later, they are planted back in the parks & communities from which they came, perpetuating Birmingham’s unique native urban forest & cultural landscape. They are better adapted than any other species to growing long into the future.

During a recent planting, Trudy Evans of the Little Garden Club commented that it is very encouraging to watch a group of people, most of whom do not know each other, come together with a common purpose to preserve a special piece of Birmingham’s history for generations yet to be born. Birmingham Botanical Gardens Executive Director & CEO Fred Spicer remarked that most planting “Freedom Oaks” will not live long enough to see the seedlings to maturity, but that their grandchildren will. Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ largest annual plant sale fundraiser will be held at the former J.C. Penney at Century Plaza in Birmingham on April 11 - 13, 2014. Over 100,000 plants will be available for purchase, many of which have been nurtured by volunteers at The Gardens. More than 7,000 plant enthusiasts attended last year’s sale. The Signature Plants for 2014 have a golden theme in honor of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ 50th anniversary celebration & are GoldDust™ hybrid mecardonia, Gold Lace coleus, deep yellow calibrachoa, Lucky™ pure gold lantana & golden creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’). Each is available for just $5. In celebration of The Gardens’ 50th anniversary, all member households will receive a free Signature Plant* at the MembersOnly Sale on Thursday & on Friday, the first 50 shoppers will receive a free Signature Plant. Growing Forward with Our Wonderful Volunteers: Many Honored During Annual Luncheon Taylor Steele, volunteer coordinator Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Annual Volunteer Luncheon is something that staff members anticipate as much as the volunteers honored. The event is held each December, typically the first or second Thursday, as the official end to the year. The luncheon gives a unique opportunity to host over 200 of our volunteer family members, City of Birmingham Staff, other partners & guests. The volunteers are lauded for their service & commitment to enriching The Gardens over the past year. The Volunteer Awards luncheon is a Birmingham Botanical Gardens tradition & a feel-good occasion. Last year, I received a phone call from a lady living near Auburn that had some old scrapbooks she thought I would be interested in. Her mother inherited the scrapbooks from a lady that was in her care, & owned them for over 20 years. Eventually, we were able to arrange a meeting between Birmingham & Auburn at Peach Park. Four scrapbooks from the Woodlawn Central Garden Club were among the collection, a group that organized February 3, 1931. I love finding unique treasures that contain our local history & helping facilitate their trip back home. I made sure to stop for peach ice cream too!

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Sakura (or zakura) is the generic Japanese transliteration for ornamental cherry, as distinguished from cherries grown for eating. Yoshino cherry, Prunus ×yedoensis is one of the most well-known sakura in Japan as well as in the US, where it became famous as one of the primary trees in the Tidal Basin planting in Washington, DC. That planting started with a gift of over 3,000 cherries from the people of Japan to the people of the US in 1912. Yoshino cherry is also a very rewarding ornamental small tree for Birmingham, being fast-growing & exuberant in its willingness to flower lavishly, even at a young age. Numerous Yoshino cherries grace our Japanese Gardens & typically bloom in early to mid-March, usually in sync with the Sakura Matsuri, or Cherry Blossom Festival, hosted in partnership with the Japan-America Society of Alabama (JASA). This year, the festival is on 22 March from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. & is free to the public. Ornamental cherries are an important cultural symbol in Japan, where their spectacular but fleeting beauty is said to represent the transient wonder of life itself. Television weather reporters forecast dates for the eagerly-awaited “cherry blossom front,” sakura zensen, as a sure sign of spring. Flowering progresses from south to north & tens of thousands of people crowd into parks & cities at hanami (literally, flower viewing) parties as they follow the blooms through to the hanafubuki (flower snow storm), when the spent petals create a delightful floral blizzard.

The lightly fragrant, white to pale pink flowers (above right) are borne in clusters of 5-6 on short spurs, on leafless stems. The effect of a mature Yoshino cherry in full bloom is truly magnificent (below). Leaves emerge bronze at first & quickly mature to dark green. Fall color can be a subtle yellow, with a reddish-orange cast, but non-fatal fungal infections often cause leaves to drop before coloring in our area. Yoshino cherry is thought to be a garden hybrid that resulted from controlled breeding in Japan in the early 1700s. DNA studies have confirmed its hybrid origin & the parents as being two native Japanese Prunus species. While not long-lived for us, Yoshino cherry is well worth growing nevertheless.

GARDENING “TIPS” CALENDAR March •

FRUITS & NUTS - Continue strawberry & grape plantings. Bud apples & peaches. Start planting blackberries. Remember, if weather conditions prevent prompt planting, heel the plants in by placing the root system in a trench & covering the soil.

•

SHRUBS - Fertilize shrubs (except azaleas & camellias) according to a soil test. Late plantings may be made, particularly if they are container-grown. Watch shrubs for harmful insects.

•

LAWNS - Plant bermuda, zoysia, & centipede in South Alabama. Seed bluegrass & grass mixtures in North Alabama. Fertilize established lawns.

•

ROSES - Watch new growth for aphids. Begin a spray or dust program. Begin fertilizing.

•

ANNUALS & PERENNIALS - Tender annuals may be planted in South Alabama. Check garden centers for bedding plants.

•

BULBS - Plant gladiolus every two or three weeks if a long blooming season is desired. Plant tuberous begonias in pots. Plant dahlias.

•

MISCELLANEOUS - Check & repair sprayers, dusters, & lawn mowers. Control lawn weeds with chemicals. Delay pruning of fruiting shrubs such as cotoneasters, pyracanthas, & hollies until after flowering.

•

VEGETABLE SEEDS - Plant hardy crops recommended for January & February. After danger of frost is past, plant tender vegetables.

•

VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant cabbage, onions, lettuce, broccoli, & Brussels sprouts in North Alabama; plant tomatoes & peppers in lower South Alabama.

MISCELLANEOUS - Spray camellias, hollies, etc., for scale insects. Carefully water new plantings of shrubs & trees. Pinching out tips of new shoots promotes more compact shrubs.

Highlighting the Garden Club of America’s commitment to environmental protection, a featured speaker will be Birmingham native Rick Middleton, founder & executive director of the Southern Environmental Law Center that has grown to be the largest environmental organization focused exclusively on protecting southern rivers, forests, wildlife, & air quality. Also addressing the group will be Birmingham’s own Fred Spicer, Executive Director & CEO of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. With over 30 years in practice as a public garden administrator, landscape architect & nurseryman, Fred has been with Birmingham Botanical Gardens since 2001.
