As I write this, we have just shaken off the effects of this past winter and I, for one, am reveling in the truly spectacular spring we’re experiencing. I hope you’ve noticed and I have gotten a few suggestions from a few learned folks about why it has been so good. First, we had ample precipitation last summer. If you haven’t realized it yet, plants are very good at planning ahead; and unless it’s an annual, the prior season is when that planning happened – when spring-blooming plants set their flower buds. Second, with the protracted freezing temperatures and bitter absolute cold temperatures, plants were fully vernalized. That’s a nifty word for the way plants re-set their biological clocks. Vernalization helps to synchronize germination, emergence and flowering among plants of the same species. Third, we warmed up slowly and the weather has been relatively cool. The early bloomers got off to a somewhat late start and they held nicely, often overlapping with typically later flowering species. Fourth, we all had a horrific case of cabin fever! I think all of this – along with great marketing and most of all our fantastic, devoted volunteers and loyal customer – helped Spring Plant Sale 2014 approach record sales. Our other, earlier events, all of which highlighted our 50th anniversary year, were just as successful, too, even though we didn’t have revenue goals for them. We saw lots of old friends and made many new ones as well, at the Annual Members’ Celebration, the special Celebrating Our Roots presentation and the Spencer Lecture. And there’s more excitement as we head into summer with a free, fun movie on the Formal Garden lawn and an excursion to a beautiful garden in Georgia! See all the details in the pages ahead. Finally, we offer a huge thanks to our volunteers, members and donors alike for making this a fantastic spring (regardless of the weather).

Members-Only Day Trip Hills & Dales Estate, LaGrange, Ga. June 20, 2014 Join Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens on a Day Trip to Hills & Dales Estate in LaGrange, GA on Friday, June 20, 2014. The cost of the trip is $80/person. The fee includes Charter Bus transportation, special guided tour of the garden and house, lunch by the pool and beverages and snacks on the bus. This trip is open to all members of Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Each member is allowed to bring one non-member on the trip. The bus should leave The Gardens at 7:30 a.m. and be back no later than 6:30 p.m. An exact itinerary is located on our website. Payment must be received by June 1, 2014. All attendees must ride the bus and get on the bus at The Gardens. No one is allowed to follow separately in their car.

Description of Hills & Dales Estate: The centerpiece of the Hills & Dales Estate is a beautiful Georgian-Italian villa, designed by architects Hal Hentz & Neel Reid for textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway, Sr. Completed in 1916, the home complements the formal boxwood gardens planted earlier in the mid 19th century by Sarah Ferrell. The property has been lovingly preserved by two generations of the Callaway family and is now open for public visitation. Guests can explore educational exhibits and experience an engaging film that tells the story of the estate. More information on Hills & Dales Estate is located at www.hillsanddales.org.

Henry Hughes awarded

the Garden Club of America’s Zone VIII

Horticulture Commendation On April 8, Director of Education Henry Hughes was presented the Garden Club of America’s prestigious Zone VIII Horticulture Commendation. Hughes was recognized for his leadership and collaboration in re-foresting George Ward Park as part of the Garden Club of America’s Centennial Tree Project. The Little Garden Club of Birmingham and Red Mountain Garden Club worked with Henry on the George Ward Park project for four years, which involved propagating seed collected from trees in this Olmsted Brothers park, potting them and replanting them in the park under the parent tree canopy. This “re-forestation” has become a catalyst for a growing number of additional tree planting projects throughout the city of Birmingham.

at Red Mountain Park & Vulcan Park & Museum (Right) Director of Education Henry Hughes joined Vulcan Park and Museum President and CEO Darlene Negrotto for a tree planting at the feet of the Magic City’s iron man.

On March 22, Executive Director & CEO Fred Spicer joined Red Mountain Park Commission Chair Stephen A. Jones, former NFL player and Pro Start Academy founder Gary Burley, Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell and Red Mountain Park Executive Director David Dionne at Red Mountain Park for a tree planting. In honor of The Gardens 50th anniversary celebration, The Gardens donated 50 “Freedom Oaks” for the project, which has been ongoing in Birmingham since 2009. On April 25, in celebration of Arbor Day, The Gardens donated eight trees to Vulcan Park & Museum as part of a long term reforestation project for the site.

Customer Service and a Smile...

Archie Blackmon The staff and patrons of The Library acknowledge that we have many great volunteers, and that it’s hard to pick one to write about in our Volunteer Spotlight. However, when Archie Blackmon’s name was mentioned, everyone unanimously agreed. Archie become a Master Gardener in 2010, and joined the library as a volunteer in 2011. In the three years of service all have come to enjoy his rich personality, attention to detail and his wonderful customer service to patrons. Archie has known the value of volunteerism for some time, and upon retirement from AT&T, Archie served as a volunteer with AT&T Telephone Pioneers. When asked why he likes to volunteer in The Library, Archie says, “This is where all the learning is,” which bodes well for his wealth of knowledge about plants, soils and growing vegetables. Archie believes customer service is his focus during his Tuesday morning shift, and loves to interact with patrons needing his assistance. One of Archie’s most exciting experiences at The Gardens was during January’s blizzard. Archie was one of the sixty people that spent the night in the Garden Center, as The Gardens was deemed a warming station during the winter emergency. Archie opened up The Library to allow many weary travelers, stranded staff and volunteers the enjoyment of our many books, publications and computers. To Archie, this was just helping our patrons. To us, this is why our volunteers are priceless. Come say hello to Archie on Tuesday mornings, and please ask about his new grandchild. When Archie is not volunteering at The Library at The Gardens, he and his wife Linda like to travel, garden and spend many hours with Archie, III.

News from the Archives & Rare Book Room By Jason Kirby, library assistant & archivist

Most learned the Camellia is the official state flower of Alabama in elementary school, but recently, I’ve discovered information that shows the goldenrod once served as the official state flower. The goldenrod became the official state flower of Alabama on September 6, 1927, the same day that the Yellowhammer became the state bird, and it represented Alabama well for over thirty years. I was on the lookout for postcards that related to our state botanical emblems (flowers, wildflowers and trees) online and found, by accident, a violet - Alabama state flower postcard, with our state capital on it, postmarked 1912. I quickly bought it knowing very few records I have run across ever mentioned any state flower for Alabama before the goldenrod. While it will require more research, I may have stumbled upon something rare to add The Archives. Come check it out!

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

“If you grow perennials – native or not – purple coneflower should be among the first plants on your list.” That’s a quote from Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator John Manion, and as much as he likes to throw around superlatives (deservedly so, in most cases), I think he’s onto something here. Botanically known as Echinacea purpurea, purple coneflower, with its showy composite flowers, is for gardeners east of the Rockies one of the most well-known members of the aster family, Asteraceae.“Aster” comes from the Greek word for “star,” and the striking, two-part flowers of this family were the basis for the old family name Compositae. Purple coneflowers’ droopy purple-pink (sometimes cream-white) ray florets encircle dense heads of orange disc florets [above left]. Both produce copious nectar and are highly attractive to insect pollinators [right]. The seeds are favored by seed-eating birds, especially the handsome American goldfinch (the state bird of New Jersey). Alabama boasts four native Echinacea species including E. purpurea, which is the most common. It’s largely restricted to the northern two-thirds of the state, but is rather uncommon. The center of the genus’ distribution is west of the Mississippi River, with OK, TX and AR each sporting six species; one species, E. laevigata, is strictly southeastern. Most Echinacea are plants of full sun and prairie-like habitats, providing strong clues about how these plants perform best in the garden. Purple coneflowers – and their hybrid progeny, of which there are now legion – tolerate full sun and average to dry conditions in soils of mid-range pH. They will also take some shade, such as high, filtered shade and afternoon shade, but flowering will be reduced and the plants will not be as dense. Purple coneflowers benefit from having some neighboring plants for their 30” tall flowering stalks, borne throughout May and into June, to lean on [below]. When grown alone, they may require staking, especially in rich soils. Deadheading will often result in a second (diminished) flush of flowers. In good locations, purple coneflowers are typically problem-free and can be long-lived; they will often seed in non-aggressively. Division of the fibrous root masses is easy, and best done in late fall or early spring. Great garden plants for sure, but broad claims of these plants’ medicinal value are controversial among researchers.

GARDENING “TIPS” CALENDAR May •

FRUITS AND NUTS – Continue spray program. Keep grass from around trees and strawberries. Peaches and apples can still be budded.

•

SHRUBS – Newly planted shrubs need extra care now and in coming weeks. Don’t spray with oil emulsions when temperature is above 85 °F.

•

LAWNS – Now is the best time to start lawns from seed. Water new lawns as needed to prevent drying. Keep established lawns actively growing by watering fertilizing and mowing. Spray weeds in lawns with proper herbicide.

•

ROSES – Spray or dust for insects and diseases. Fertilize monthly with complete fertilizer or rose special. Container-grown plants in flower may be planted. Prune climbing roses after the first big flush offlowering.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Late plantings of bedding plants still have time to produce. Watch for insects on day lilies.

•

BULBS – Summer bulbs started in containers may still be planted. Do not remove foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Do not let seedheads form on tulips and other spring flowering bulbs.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – Mulch new shrub plantings if not already done. Avoid drying out new shrub, tree and lawn plantings.

•

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant heat-loving and tender vegetables. Start cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and celery in coldframe for fall garden.

•

VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potatoes.

FRUITS AND NUTS – Layer grapes and continue spray programs. Thin apples and peaches if too thick. SHRUBS – Lace bugs may be a problem on azaleas, pyracanthas, dogwoods, cherry laurels, and other shrubs. Water as needed. Fertilize now. Keep long shoots from developing by pinching out tips. Good time to take cuttings from semimature wood for rooting.

•

LAWNS – Follow a schedule of fertilization and watering. Lawns should be mowed weekly Planting may continue if soil is moist. Continue weed spraying if necessary.

•

ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS – Keep old flower heads removed to promote continued flowering. Plant garden mums if not already in. For compact mums, keep tips pinched out. Watch for insects and diseases.

•

BULBS – Foliage may be removed from spring bulbs if it has yellowed and is becoming dry. Watch for aphids and thrips on summer bulbs.

•

MISCELLANEOUS – If scale insects continue on shrubs, use materials other than oils. Set houseplants on porch or outdoors in shade and pay close attention to the need for water. If desired, air layer houseplants.

•

VEGETABLE SEED – Plant beans, field peas, pumpkins, squash, corn, cantaloupes and watermelons.

•

VEGETABLE PLANTS – Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and sweet potato vine cuttings.

Butterfly Awareness Day June 14 â&#x20AC;˘ 10-2 p.m. In cooperation with Birmingham Zoo, Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, Auburn Cooperative Extension System, The Gardens Native Plant Group and McWane Science Center, Birmingham Botanical Gardens presents Birmingham's Butterfly Education and Awareness Day on June 15. Each year, the Association for Butterflies, a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of butterflies through conservation, research and promotion of butterfly gardening and butterfly farmers, celebrates Butterfly Education Awareness Day on the first Saturday of June. This year, three of Birmingham's most recognizable cultural institutions have chosen Father's Day weekend to bring the same celebration to the Magic City as part of The Gardens' "Get Into The Gardens" series.
