CEO UPDATE

Dear Colleagues,

This is my first update to the business as we manage the handover between Colin and I. The day-to-day CEO duties were transferred to me on 30th October, and Colin is currently on a wellearned holiday in the US, where I hope he is taking it easy, getting some sun and playing some golf.

Firstly, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone I have met and given me such a warm welcome to the business since I joined. At the time of writing this newsletter, I have been here for five weeks. In many ways not a very long time – but I feel very much at home having had a fantastic induction to the group.

I have been balancing trying to get out and see as many parts of the business as possible. In that time I have visited Abbey Hill, Wycombe Heights, Hoebridge, Birchwood Park, and Redbourn in the golf division. I have also been to Milton Keynes, Guildford, Romford, Basildon, Tonbridge, Sidcup, and Stevenage Adventure Leisure and Ninja Leisure sites. Thanks to all the colleagues I have met, who have hosted me and been on the end of

my many questions as I learn more about the business.

My other main priority has been using the budget process for 2025 as a way of understanding more detail about the business, and the opportunities and current operational challenges we face. It has been great to see the detail and energy that has been put into this process and there have been some interesting discussions about the priorities for next year and how well-placed the business is to grow further in 2025.

Last week was a good example for me of the strength of BGL and how we navigate the challenges we face at this time of year. As it was half term, I was able to visit some very busy AL sites. All the colleagues I met were working hard to ensure that our customers were having a fantastic time, and there was a real mix of family groups and friends of different ages enjoying our different adventure golf experiences. The week also highlighted some of the physical challenges we face with unpredictable weather and the Autumn issue of keeping leaves from spoiling the golf. It was great to see so much effort going into making our facilities look their best at such a changeable time of the year. I just wanted to say thank you again for all your hard work.

In the last BGL Team News, Colin referred to the current trading. The golf division has continued to perform well against budget in Q3 whilst the challenging conditions for AL and NL have continued. The business was busy last week, and the remainder of the year needs to focus on maximising all the sales opportunities we have in front of us, whilst providing our customers with a fantastic experience so that they want to return.

Over the next few weeks, I will continue to be out and about visiting more of our golf division, AL, and NL sites. I look forward to seeing more of you on the road and if you see me, please stop by to say hello and ask any questions that you may have.

Best wishes

FAREWELL

Dear Colleagues,

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate Simon on being appointed CEO of our business and it’s been a real pleasure working with him on the handover for the last couple of months.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked for me over the past 18 years, it’s been a real pleasure working with you all running the business and growing it to its current level. Both Simon, Jim and I are also currently working on a number of projects that will hopefully see us grow again in the months ahead. Your board of directors have a clear plan for the business and with the experience Simon brings, I am very confident that Burhill’s future is very bright indeed.

I am planning to improve my golf (so you might well see me out on our golf courses) and get significantly fitter so I can continue my Masters Swimming events. I also plan on spending more time with my family and my grandchildren, as well as building a new home for us all, so next year looks like a busy year already. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy festive season and all the very best for 2025 and beyond.

Thank you all for a wonderful 18 years as your CEO with the Burhill Group.

Warmest regards to you all.

Estates

From sink holes to new sinks, the estates team have been busy maintaining our 50+ properties and looking after over 750 acres! The team have been busy over the last few months with the varying weather causing havoc across the estate. We have had numerous fallen trees, flash floods, and severe droughts.

Property

Less dramatic, but certainly keeping us busy are six new planning applications that we’ve got in progress including driving range extensions and new reservoirs. We also have over 200 acres of development land we are constantly looking to “promote” locally, this involves teams of planning consultants, architects, highways specialists, and ecologists to assist in preparing submissions.

Employee Wellbeing

WHAT DOES WELLBEING MEAN TO ... SERINA YOUNG - BIRCHWOOD PARK

What does the word wellbeing mean to you?

Wellbeing for me is about accepting who you are and where you are. Once you accept this you can then work towards making positive changes in your life. Wellbeing is a physical, mental, and emotional package, and each area of your wellbeing is as important as having your brain, heart, and body working together as one.

What is your favourite thing to do to stay physically healthy?

I am a very keen advocate for Myzone and it's because of Myzone belts, which monitor my effort levels within my workout, that I'm able to keep pushing forward each week to complete my workouts. If i don't put enough effort into my workouts, it takes me longer to achieve my points and my status. I enjoy spin workouts and weights. I also walk my dog although as a Frenchie the only running I do with him is when he decides to go in a different direction, which is often.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is just starting their wellbeing journey?

The piece of advice would be to not set short term goals too high that they are unachievable, remember this is a walk, jog and run strategy = walk towards your first goal. This could be joining a gym, class or just changing one eating habit a week. Jog towards your next goal - this can be a date in your diary you want to work towards, setting a food diary, and understanding where rest and relaxation come into your lives. Now we are ready to jog towards making a lasting lifestyle commitment.

WHAT DOES WELLBEING MEAN TO ... ABBIE MCCREEMULLIGANS NEWCASTLE

What does the word wellbeing mean to you?

Your overall state of mind and the way that you carry that. For me this could be wellbeing at work, mentality, and the emotional side too.

What is your favourite thing to do to stay physically healthy? Recently, I’ve been enjoying the gym, it’s helped me a lot. I also think getting out of the house is good to get some extra steps in.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is just starting their wellbeing journey?

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, take smaller steps. Selfcare is important too and a few little changes everyday help.

WHAT DOES WELLBEING MEAN TO ... SAM TARBOXNINJA MILTON KEYNES

What does the word wellbeing mean to you? Your mental and physical health.

What is your favourite thing to do to stay physically healthy?

I like to exercise, decompress, and I also like to colour! I think it’s important to spend time with family and friends too.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone who is just starting their wellbeing journey? Stay consistent and be open-minded.

PSA TESTING AT HOEBRIDGE GOLF CENTRE

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the PSA testing event at Hoebridge Golf Centre on on November 9th. With over 200 people tested, it’s inspiring to see such a strong turnout for this important health initiative.

Early detection is key to tackling prostate health issues, and events like this help make a real difference in our community. Well done to Hoebridge Golf Centre for hosting such a meaningful day, and to everyone who supported this vital cause!

Career Ladder

GET TO KNOW - ROBIN CHENG, GENERAL MANAGER

Name: Robin Cheng

Site: Abbey Hill

Start date with the company: June 2008

Position when joined:

PGA Professional @ Abbey Hill

Current position:

General Manager @ Abbey Hill

Journey:

I started off at Abbey Hill in June 2008 for a summer work placement between my second and third year at Uni. Once I finished, I started back at Abbey Hill in June 2009 as a PGA Professional and got promoted to Junior Academy Manager in 2011.

I was then responsible for junior outreach in the Milton Keynes area and setting up coaching programmes for both juniors and adults at the club with the aim of increasing

participation. At a point we were teaching over 200 children per week during term time in various schools. In addition to that, working well with England Golf & The Golf Foundation helped to get Abbey Hill shortlisted for Golf Club of the Year and allowed me to work alongside them in the development of the Junior Passport. I left BGL briefly between 2014 and 2016, only to return back to the company as Head Professional at Wycombe Heights. I stayed at Wycombe Heights for the best part of two years, winning Retail Performance of the Year award for 2017.

In 2018, Steve Brown was promoted from Head Professional of Abbey Hill to General Manager of Redbourn, and the opportunity came up for me to return to Abbey Hill in Steve’s old role. I stayed they for four years, and when Steve Brown again got the position of ESP Guru at Support Office from Redbourn, the chance came up for my first General Manager role, which I applied for and got.

I think my time at Abbey Hill as Head Professional really prepared me for this move, as there were periods of time without a GM in place there, during which I tried to step in as much as possible and learn the ropes. After nearly three years at Redbourn the opportunity came up for me to go back to my roots at Abbey Hill but this time as General Manager. I started this position at the beginning of December and I’m looking forward to what the future brings for my third time here!

If you could go back and give advice to our younger self starting at BGL, what would it be?

How do I word this without turning the language a little blue… I would advise the early version of myself not to be so head strong and to listen and learn a lot more from people. Everyone has a lesson to teach, whether it be in the good they do, or lessons learned in what not to do. It was however a trait that I believe I gradually got out of in time (some may disagree), but looking back on who I was and the way I did things make me cringe a little bit now.

One thing I have learnt about my time at BGL though, is that anybody who wishes to succeed and progress in their career within the company only needs to make the effort, take the chances when they come, and above all, take pride in your work as it will show to others.

Thanks,

Celebrating Success

LADY CAPTAIN AT BURHILL TREKS 25K OVER LONDON BRIDGES

The Lady Captain at Burhill Golf Club supported the White Lodge charity by taking on The Thames Bridges Trek on Saturday 14th September, which some colleagues also joined.

The Thames Bridges Trek is a 25km trek across London, taking in iconic bridges and landmarks along the way. The challenge started from Putney Bridge, zigzagging over 16 bridges, ending at Southward Park.

In total, £10k was raised for White Lodge. All funds raised will enable White Lodge to continue offering vital services to the disabled children, young people, and adults in our community. Quote from Colin Mayes: Mission Accomplished! Great day, great achievement, and we’ve all raised an incredible amount of money for White Lodge. Thank you! #enablingability

RAMSDALE PARK CHARITY FUNDRAISING

Ramsdale Park Head Pro, Will Davies, ran a 10K on Sunday, 13th October, with a group of friends to raise funds for Nottingham University Hospitals Charity. This effort was inspired by a dear friend who was sadly diagnosed and is still courageously fighting their battle.

As a group, they raised an outstanding total of £10,445, with Ramsdale Park members contributing over £1,200 to support Will's efforts.

The donation is dedicated to the team of doctors and nurses who have been taking care of someone very special to them. This person was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma called Burkitt's Lymphoma. Burkitt's Lymphoma develops rapidly, but thanks to the swift response of the team at City Hospital, their friend is doing incredibly well, powering through the challenging cocktail of chemotherapy. The aim of their fundraising is to give back to those who are providing exceptional care and helping her get back to enjoying a more appealing kind of cocktail with her loved ones in the future.

SOPHIA FROM THE PEOPLE TEAM, BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ED&I

H

ere are two fantastic books I’ve read in recent years that I highly recommend:

1. PROUD – A collection of stories, poetry, and art centered around the theme of PRIDE.

2. Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho – A powerful and thought-provoking exploration of race and dialogue.

Both books offer unique perspectives and are excellent resources for anyone interested in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE

Did you know that CQ stands for Cultural Intelligence?

What is Cultural Intelligence (CQ)?

CQ is the ability to relate to and work effectively across cultures.

What can I do to make sure that I am a CQ leader?

• Be self-aware – reflect on your own cultural biases and assumptions

• Continuous learning – engage in cultural learning opportunities (e.g. books, workshops, research papers, access learning)

• Active listening – pay close attention to culture cues and feedback from team members

• Seek diverse perspectives – encourage diverse viewpoints in decision-making processes

• Mentorship – partner with culturally diverse mentors or colleagues

• Experience – seek cross-cultural interactions and global projects

'BRUTAL' BRIAN BAILEY

I started at Ramsdale Park in March 2016 as a "one-off" summer job, but I’ve been here every week since. What do I love about Ramsdale Park? Everything—two wonderful courses, friendly members, excellent management, great co-workers, and the fresh air. From the starter’s huts, I’ve built my reputation as 'Brutal Brian'. Sending players off with smiles and laughter through equal parts cajoling, insults, and praise.

Nothing beats seeing members improve their game, offering tips to help them along (while pointing them to our amazing pros for lessons). Contributing to our charities, thanks to the generosity of our members, has been truly heartwarming.

While I loved my career as an architect, the satisfaction I get from this little retirement job is priceless. Here’s to many more years of it!

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

NATIONAL AUTISTIC SOCIETY - SWANSEA BUNKERS!

Around four times a year we have the National Autistic Society bring around 50 children to both Bunkers and Ninja Warrior where they have access to our venues without the worry of the general public also being present.

We adapt our venues as best we can to suit their needs, such as turning the sound off on the arcade machines, turning the music off and dimming the lights wherever possible. During this time, the children can play golf, play on the ninja courses, have fun, and spend time with their families in a safe space without the worry of being too overwhelmed in a busy public place.

These sessions always receive positive feedback and we have built up good community connections within Swansea. As well as the children, we have also just started doing adult nights where a group of adults come with the National Autistic society and do Karaoke and have some drinks knowing they’re in a safe space.

We hope to carry this on long into the future as we strive to give back to the community of Swansea and provide a safe space for those who need a little more help.
