For the most part, I think the weather has turned for the better, interrupted briefly by some downpours, which quite frankly are a relief now considering the irrigation issues we have been having. New pumps have been ordered and should all be installed in early August, with the underlying problem, seemingly identified and rectified. Usually light at the end of a tunnel is the apt phrase, but I would prefer to see water at the end of the sprinkler.

Thank you to all of those who have responded to the NPS customer feedback survey. To those who have given us a 9 or a 10, it is very much appreciated and shows we are going in the right direction. While still a lot left to do, it is

good to see that our efforts aren’t going unnoticed Whatever score you give us, please make sure to add feedback to the score, as it has given me a good feel of what changes need to be made at the golf club. Member specials, bunkers, sand and seed bags, shoe cleaner, first tee flower bed and a lot more. While sometimes things can’t be done, or done so easily (second story balcony), many others have, making Redbourn an even better club.
We will get there!

Sam & George – PGA Trainees... and Football Rivals
My name is Sam Merson a trainee PGA professional starting this year. I’m currently playing on the Clutch Pro Tour which is a professional tour based in the UK. I’m very excited to be here to meet all the members along my journey and hopefully coach many of our members once I’ve completed the course. My personal interests are all sports, especially golf and football (Arsenal fan).
My name is George Webb, I am a new Trainee PGA Professional starting this year. I am very excited to be here at Redbourn and have already enjoyed meeting some members. I cannot wait to meet so many more new faces and hopefully coach some of you once I have completed my PGA course. My interests are golf and football (Chelsea fan). I try to spend all my free time with my partner and our three beautiful children, going on as many family days as we can. I look forward to meeting you all and don’t hesitate to come say hello in the pro shop.
100 Holes in a Day
On Monday 29th July, two determined young brothers, Harry (aged 12) and Mylo Barrett (aged 10) completed 100 holes of golf on our Kinsbourne course to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
The boys’ younger brother Bailey is currently undergoing medical treatment at GOSH, and the boys wanted to raise much-needed funds for the hospital by playing 100 holes in one day to show their appreciation for how they have been taking care of their brother. The boys’ parents Laura and Kevin were immensely proud, as were all the members and staff at Redbourn Golf Club.
For anyone who would like to still donate, please find their just giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/100golf4gosh

Irrigation
I would like to update you all on where our irrigation system currently is. Hopefully, by the time you are all reading this, the whole system will be fixed but let me explain the basics of what has happened, and how well Haydn and the rest of the on-course staff have done.
We now understand what the issue was with the programming of the Flow Management system. The control part that matched up what the sprinklers were supposed to deliver and what the pumps are currently supplying to the sprinklers was not inputted correctly.
This caused the system to lose pressure weekly, forcing us to re-pressurise the system far too regularly. Of course, this added strain on us, as systems are only really meant to be re-pressurised once a year, causing damage to not only our pumps but also the joints.
Parts that broke then got stuck in the nonreturn valves. Eventually, a valve to stop pressurised water flowing backwards then allowed close to 14 bar of pressure. It blew the filter off the pipe in the reservoir, leading to the following programmes to suck in a lot of debris and clog up the majority of components in the pump house.
This was back in 2022 and this year it happened as well, but instead of the filter coming off, the pipe was disconnected at a joint.
Our new contractors have ordered new pumps that should be delivered close to the start of August, as well as a full reprogramming of the Flow Management system.
We are very close to the end of this, and I can now look forward to going to bed knowing that greens, approaches, and tees are getting a good watering overnight! Haydn and the team are even more

relieved.
The standards of the course the team achieved from April into May were phenomenal, and I look forward to presenting a course to you all that reflects the hard work and care that goes into it.
Sustainability & Our New Hybrid Mower
One of the negative environmental associations with the golf industry is the resources that are used to maintain the pristine condition of the courses. Now, as much as I’d like to massively reduce the work put into cutting the grass to make a significant impact on our emissions, I must assume that none of you golfers will be too happy with this! Therefore, a solution that benefits both Redbourn’s sustainability standards whilst ensuring that we do not compromise on the playability conditions for all of you lovely members is the way to go. This year we are excitedly awaiting the arrival of a hybrid mower! The Toro Reelmaster 5010-H has an 18.5 kW internal combustion engine which is supplemented with power from a self-recharging 48vdc battery system and generator.
Only about half of the energy of standard diesel mowers is converted into output energy used to move the wheels. With our new exciting hybrid system, the battery collects the excess energy and stores it, making it significantly more energy efficient.
I am looking forward to seeing it out on our course by the end of the year and updating you all on how our greenkeeping team is finding it!

Neil Marcus Club Captain
As far as our diary is concerned, we’re getting through our events, competitions and match fixtures very well. It’s been a busy couple of months with Captain’s Day, Eric Russell weekend and our Club Championships, and I thank you all for your participation and for generating such a lovely club atmosphere.
Many congratulations to our reigning Club Champion, Tony Biggerstaff on winning the Championship again in 2024, and to Karl Wingfield on winning the Seniors Club Championship Gross Competition 2024.
We’re always looking for members to play in Men’s Section matches, inter-club mixed friendlies and internal mixed friendlies, including our 9&Dine events, so do check the noticeboard regularly to see what’s coming up and pop your name down. Finally, you’ll notice on the new scorecards that the hole names now appear in the left-hand column. I know it will take a little getting used to, but I believe this will give character to an already stunning golf course. Many thanks to those of you who offered name suggestions.
Best wishes and enjoy your golf.
Neil
As most of you should know, Redbourn is part of a larger group of Golf Clubs, ranging from as far north as Ramsdale Park in Nottingham, to as far south as Thornbury in Bristol. As part of your membership at Redbourn you do get one complimentary round per month to use at one of the other BGL Group clubs (Burhill limited to one per year), and to book, all you need to do is come and see the events team.
A special mention goes to our Thornbury venue where they offer an overnight stay in their Lodge as well as two rounds of golf. Also, plenty of other courses in the area too.
