Draw With the Club Championship around the corner, there’s no better time to sharpen up the short game and practice those nervy fourfoot putts. At the end of the day, a dropped shot here or there could be the difference between you and a winning score! In order to be eligible to win the Nett Trophy, golfers must have submitted eight qualifying scores over the past 12 months. Good luck to everyone, and please see below the start sheet:

Dear Member, Another month has passed, and it won’t be long until I start decorating this newsletter in a festive theme with Christmas lights as a border. Strange to think, considering we’re now experiencing another heatwave.

CLUB NEWS

John Barber Success Huge congratulations to our very own John Barber, who recently won the TSG Open Championship with 37 points. Over £2,000 was raised on the da for The Cairns Cup, a charity that supports and promotes disability golf.

• Hannah Morris Returning Hannah Morris will be returning from maternity leave on Monday 3rd October to her previous position of Sales Manager, and will join Sophie and Ben in the office! We can’t wait to have her back after welcoming her baby Specialboy!mention to Sophie Hill, who took over from Hannah in the interim and has done a fantastic job! Feedback Many of you will receive an automatic email on a day that you have played, asking for you to rate the club’s overall performance from 1-10. Here’s how it works: 0-6 is not a very good score, 7-8 is classified as a passive score (on the fence), and 9-10 is a great score. We appreciate all feedback that we receive, regardless of score. The more feedback we receive, the more we can do to improve our service and offering. I’d like to incentivise you all to take part, whether your feedback is good or bad, by running a monthly lucky dip from all those who have responded (no matter the score).

New Vice Captain Appointed Our current Vice Captain, Matt Perry has unfortunately stepped down. However, Ian Rice has volunteered to become Club Captain – depending on pending surveys – for the 2023/24 season. “I used to be a fairly useful competitive player in the early days, but now my dubious claim to fame is as Starter for the Club Championship. It takes me back to my Headmaster days – ‘I’m in Charge’.”

Top up by £100 or more in August for the range to double your credit. The last day for this offer is August 31st. Range credit, as always, last for one year from date of purchase. See the shop team to stock up.

Within the spirit of integrating new members and mixing, I’d like to ask for the names and contact details for all those who effectively run the various syndicates so that we could provide details to those who wish to join a group on a weekend morning. Bill Forrester – Turning 90 this year! “I didn’t take up golf until I was 41, and joined Redbourn shortly after. Here I am at 90, having spent almost 50 years at Redbourn. To my mind one of the best things I have done, because of the friends I’ve made and the ups and downs of this character-forming game of golf. The club has had its ups and downs too since I joined.

Currently it seems to be getting on the up again – thanks to all involved”

Costs Increases

Many of you will be aware that we are experiencing price increases in almost every sector. With currently inflation being just over 9%, things are starting to cost more. Our estimated electricity costs are on the rise, and by the end of the year we are forecasting a rise of around 120%. Simple ingredients we use every day, such as eggs, are rising by 20% and cheese by 25%. As always, we will do our very best to hold our prices on the majority of items, however there may come a time when we will have to pass on partial costs to our customers. This is not an easy decision, as we know that everybody is feeling the pinch. We hope that you see this as a necessity, and we will continue to invest revenue that we make back into the club to improve the overall experience.

A couple of Housekeeping reminders: Just a couple of points brought up recently that most of you know, but a gentle reminder to a few.

A couple of days ago we had our second pump fitted, meaning we were fully operational for two days and nights. However, a seal has since gone on the new pump and we are back down to half capacity until it comes back to us fixed. Our sincerest apologies for how this is affecting the golf

Irrigation

• Please can all reciprocal rounds you wish to book at other clubs be made through the office team. If you are struggling to get through, please email info@redbourngolfclub. co.uk. Most other clubs should be booked a week in advance.

Paths All path projects around the course are now 90% complete. Some may look a little better than others (some still need to be rolled). The plainings in place bind better when wet, so they will continue to improve after rolling and some rain. They will be in great shape for winter.

• We welcome members to participate in as many club competitions as possible. We would also ask those playing behind competitions to be patient and respectful of those at the tail end. If there is a slow play issue, please contact the pro shop so that we can send a marshal out. Also, please adopt Ready Golf where possible, as this will help speed the course up. See below link for guidance on Ready ready-golfrules/2-management-practices/subrules/5-https://api.randa.org/en/pace-of-play-manual/Golf.

Thecourse.greenkeeping team have done a fantastic job keeping the greens in great condition considering the time and effort that has been spent manually re-filling the irrigation system. We hope you will start seeing some greener patches out there soon!

It is hard to believe that six months of my tenure have passed already. It’s gone so quickly and I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support.

On Wednesday 20th July, we held our annual Invitation Day. This was a fantastic event and gave our members the opportunity to share the delights of the club with their guests. Overall there were 13 clubs represented, and there were lots of prizes to be won!

Annual Invitation Day

• The team prize was won by Nicky McQueen and Lesley Cassidy with a score of 50 points

There is plenty more to come this year, with the highlight so far being my Lady Captains Day. July has been another busy month, with a number of competitions open to all lady members.

£235 was raised in the raffle for my charity! A fantastic result. A massive thank you to Paula for organising the event on our behalf, and thanks to the wonderful volunteers who all helped to make it such a memorable day.

LADY CAPTAINS

• Nearest the pin on 7 was won by Charleton

Three teams challenged for the Charity Team Trophy on Sunday 31st July. A novel method of team selection was adopted where all players had to select a playing card from a pack that was restricted to Aces, Kings or Queens. Those who picked the same cards formed the teams. The winning team were the Aces: Viv Charleton, Carol Eaton and Linda Hill. Ladies Friendlies Our friendly matches against other clubs are a great opportunity to meet new people and play on new courses. Anyone is welcome, regardless of experience… give it a go!

Princess Diana Memorial Trophy 22 ladies competed for this trophy in July. Debbie Brown took the title with 42 points, while there were also great scores from Carol Eaton, Sheryl Tye, and Jean Large. Charity Team Trophy

This year, instead of taking on the Lady ViceCaptain in a head-to-head challenge, I will be taking on the committee! In other words, ‘my seven Vices’! I have introduced myself and met a variety of people already at the club, but I am sure there are still plenty of you whom I still haven’t had the pleasure of meeting!

An intro from Ben Gray My name is Ben Gray, and I am the new Golf Events and Membership Competitions Administrator here at Redbourn Golf Club.

9

For those who haven’t met me yet, I come from a very sporting background, and I love my golf. I’ve only been here for one month now, but I can already see what a great club this is. I will be focusing on putting on more golf events around the club, whether it’s on the range or on one of our courses, and integrating some of our new members to continue building the club’s atmosphere. Whilst there are a lot of ideas floating around in the office, we would welcome more ideas from our members. If you do have any ideas, pop your head into the office and we will gladly discuss.

Men’s CommitteeCompetition

For all competitions you must sign in before you play. If you cannot sign in to either PSI or HDID, you must inform the Pro Shop who will be able to sign you in. If you enter a competition after you have finished your round, this can be seen by the committee, and it will lead to disqualification. It has been brought to our attention that some members are not putting out in competition play. This is a serious breach of golf rules, and if proven will lead to automatic disqualification and entry to future competitions may be removed. All players must finish the hole in accordance with the rules of golf. We have been advised that some members are playing the 6th hole from the 17th fairway. A reminder that the 17th hole is out of bounds for players playing the 6th hole - this is a health and safety internal out of bounds rule. If you have hit your ball down the 17th or are not sure where it finished, you must play a provisional ball from the 6th tee. If a player is found to have breached this rule they will be disqualified from the competition.

The same applies when playing the 17th hole, the 6th hole is out of bounds the whole way For the September medals, we will continue with the booking system in three zones from 7:08am to 9:00am. Slots for these zones will be available from the 13th and 14th August and can be booked via HDID. Go into bookings, select your zone and a draw will be made & posted one week before the competition.
