Ideas to consider for your garden in 2013

HE New Year ís a great time to take a walk around your garden to see how it can be updated or improved. Following are some ideas. If your summer garden feels like an oven on hot days, think about planting at least one shady tree during autumn. A leafy tree can reduce the ambient temperature by up to five degrees. By adding some bright colour you can turn your summer garden into something resembling an exotic, beachside resort. Petunias are some of the best and longest lasting
flowers to use for filling pots and baskets. Calibrachoas, which look like miniature petunias, will bloom for even longer. Both should be cut back after main flower flushes and fed every couple of weeks with Thrive Flower and Fruit. Marigolds and nasturtiums are also happy summer flowers. Showy dahlias are great value because they’ll re-grow year after year. Another way to have vibrant summer colour is by using flamboyant flowering climbers such as Mandevilla (Dipladenia), Bougainvillea and Pandorea. Don’t forget the importance of fragrance in creating
a tropical ambience. Try growing perfumed bloomers like gardenia, jasmine, frangipani and heliotrope. The lawn is often the most prominent feature of a garden, and a lush green lawn makes the entire garden seem cooler. Keep the lawn in good health by fertilising with a quality lawn food. Yates Lawn Master, which feeds for up to twelve weeks, will support the lawn right through summer. Pests and diseases can play havoc with the grass in warm weather. If large sections of lawn disappear overnight, check for armyworms. Armyworms are caterpillars that chew through expanses
of grass on an army-like front – hence their name. Shiny adult black beetles also attack grass leaves at this time of year – look out for birds pecking at the lawn. Yates Baythroid can be used to treat both armyworms and adult beetles. When applied at the recommended rate, Baythroid won’t harm earthworms. Make a New Year’s resolution to add at least one eye-catching focal point for the garden. A wall, statue, mirror, fountain, birdbath or topiaried specimen are some ideas to consider.
