Bendigo’s enduring silver screen

E

NJOYING a good movie at the Star Cinema while lounging back on the red couches with a nice glass of matching coloured beverage in hand and a hand-knitted or crochet rug over my knees is one of my favourite outings. Set in the grand confines of the Eaglehawk Town Hall, the current non-profit community-owned project has operated since April 2005 and is largely run by volunteers. But did you know The Star has operated from the Eaglehawk Town Hall since early 1900s and is the only original Bendigo theatre still showing films? The cinema originally went by the name of Star Pictures, later shortened to just the Star where patrons enjoyed not only films, but live acts and even beauty pageants. Bendigo enjoyed a vibrant cinema business in the early 1900s with six theatres screening films – the Royal Princess (1874-1963), The Star (early 1900-1960s), The Capital (1904-1952), the Tivoli Open-air (1910-1918), The Lyric (1913-1965) and the Plaza (1934-1975). Many of these operated at the same time so competition for audiences was tough. A unique camaraderie between the Lyric and the Star saw them swap film reels during the interval. By utilising the trams that ran outside both cin-

emas, they were able to offer a greater range of films. The tram conductor would meet the projectionists out the front of the cinemas and exchange the reels of film before the audience noticed any gaps in the program. The advent of television in the 1960s saw the demise of most of the cinemas including the Star. However, in 1999, the Star re-opened its doors and became a working cinema again, first under the ownership of Joan Rodger and since 2005 as a communityrun project. Today’s Star Cinema provides a grand sense of history and still uses the original projection room while the regular program includes independent, arthouse and mainstream films and the addition of the crimson couches, licensed bar and regular fund raising events adds a modern twist. The Star committee of management, sub-committees and box office administrators all operate on a volunteer basis. They offer their time out of a passion to see the Star Cinema continue to provide Bendigonians and visitors with a unique cinema experience. If you haven’t ventured out to Eaglehawk for the experience yet, you are missing one of Bendigo’s best attractions.
