Thoughtful selection will soon have your garden blooming as well as fruit and vegetable yields exceeding expectations

W

HAT a cold month July was, August is here and it’s time to get in the garden and start preparing for the warmer months ahead. There is plenty of time to plant bare-root ornamental and fruit trees, berries, grapes, roses and asparagus, rhubarb and Jerusalem artichoke. You can also purchase your seed potatoes, which are certified free of virus and disease, for planting next month and you can start getting your potato plot ready by adding manures and compost to where you are planting, alternatively they can also be grown in potato bags (great for small gardens), using a good potting mix. The vegetable patch should be putting out crops in abundance now, you can keep planting peas, carrot, beetroot, silver-beet, spinach, onions, rocket, leek and kale and still get really good crops right through until the end of September into October. Start preparing your dormant garden and vegetable beds for spring and summer planting by digging lots of compost and manures into the soil. For those who don’t have big gardens you can always grow your vegetables and fruit trees in pots. Use deep containers with good potting mix, feed regularly with a liquid fertiliser, topped up with a slow release fertiliser every six months. Also for the smaller garden, dwarf fruit trees are ideal for pots as they only grow to around two metres and are available now. Varieties include citrus, apricot, plum, apple, pear, peach and nectarine. With the peach and nectarine, watch for the budding of flowers as it is almost time to spray for leaf curl. Spray just before bud burst with a copper fungicide spray.

WITH SUE PHILLIPS Bendigrow Garden and Living Centre, Tannery Lane Strathfieldsaye Pruning of roses and fruit trees can still be done except apricots, which should be pruned in autumn. Choose a windy day so the wound will dry out, but don’t leave it too much longer as the sap will start to run, enabling disease to infect your plants. Make sure you keep your trees in vase shape, you can take up to two thirds off if needed. The same for roses, prune them to an open vase shape and always to an outward facing bud, spray with a fungicide and wait for the new leaves to pop, then give them a good feed. Remember to keep an eye out for aphids on young growth and new foliage, not just roses but trees like the acer (maple) family which often get black aphid on the new growth. Remember we will still have a number of frosts to contend with so keep young soft plants protected with shade cloth or spray them with Envy or a seaweed mix, even a light coating of mulch won’t hurt. If the frost is extremely heavy, wash frost off the plant before the sun hits the plant. Have a great month enjoying all the winter flowering natives like wattles, hakeas, correas, tetratheca, some grevilleas, acmademia, crowea and emu bush and get planting those bare-root ornamentals for some summer shade.
