Now is the ideal time to plant bare-rooted stock to take advantage of the inevitable spring growth

ERE we are again in the depths of winter with lots of rain making it a wonderful to be in the garden. Rug up and get digging, it’s a great time to be planting anything really. As a nursery person, it’s prime time for bare-rooted trees, both fruit and ornamental, roses, asparagus, strawberry runners, berries, kiwi fruit and rhubarb. Not to mention all the wonderful winter vegetables, flowers and still some spring bulbs. There are stacks of wonderful deciduous ornamental trees to plant. Like the ever popular ornamental pear varieties, encompassing small, medium and large varieties. These are quick growing with white blossoms in spring and vivid green foliage in summer along with autumn colours that will astound. Once established they are also quite tolerant of the dry.

...it’s prime time for bare-rooted trees, both fruit and ornamental, roses, asparagus, strawberry runners, berries, kiwi fruit and rhubarb Other beautiful trees great for our area are Canadian maples, with beautiful bright red autumn foliage and bright green, large hand shaped leaves in spring and summer. Crepe myrtles also have a fantastic autumn foliage show and flower in late spring right through summer. Then there’s the ever popular crab apple with many varieties to choose from, featuring green foliage on some, burgundy and burgundy/green on others, all with a fantastic show of spring blossom. There are many, more to choose from, so drop into your nursery and see what’s on offer. There’s also lots of new roses out this year, which are just starting to trickle into my nursery.

Your roses are probably looking a little shabby now, although a couple of mine have only recently finished flowering. If they have dropped most of their leaves you can cut them back, around a third off, I usually wait a little longer –late July to early August, depending on how cold it gets. When you cut them back spray them with lime sulphur, this will help to stop diseases like black spot and powdery mildew over the winter period. If your plants have had these problems over the flowering season make sure any off-cuts and leaves are binned so you don’t spread disease through your compost. Don’t cut back perennials just yet, leave the spent branches on a little longer to protect new growth from frost damage, I’m sure there will be plenty more frosts to come. Bulbs in the garden or pots that have seen better days can be tidied up and fed now. As bulbs are dying down is the best time to feed as this food will be stored in the bulb for next years’ flowering. Flowers and vegies to pop in now in either pots or garden beds are; onions, leeks, carrots, cauliflower, spinach broccoli, cabbage, Asian greens like pak choi and wong boc, then there’s silverbeet, chard, kale and lots more. Flowers like pansies – 31 varieties, viola, snapdragons, aquilegia, foxgloves and primula varieties to name but a few. Mix and match a couple of different flowers in a pot to make a welcoming sight at the front door. My sasanqua camellia is in full bloom at the moment and I love this time of year when it’s flowering. Their perfume says to me winter is well and truly here and the abundance of birds looking for nectar is just wonderful. This year for the first time we have silver eyes that are really enjoying a feed from them, along with the bossy wattle birds. Dessert will be the japonica camellias that are budding up beautifully now, I hope the birds hang around for the next course. Happy gardening
