PAIN: The Royal Commission may bring closure for some, but the sad memories of their time at St Aidan’s will remain.

THE Royal Commission into Sexual Abuse is coming to Bendigo on July 23. A spokesperson for the commission said they have so far received 21 reports of child sexual abuse. These incidents are not necessarily confined to institutions within the City of Greater Bendigo. The commission declined to say

forum to be held at the Bendigo Town Hall on Wednesday, July 23 between 6pm and 8pm. During the forum, the Royal Commissioner Justice Jennifer Coate will provide an overview of the work of the Royal Commission and answer questions from the community.
Royal Commission chief executive officer Philip Reed said the community forum was open to any members of the public who have an interest in the Royal Commission and encouraged people affected by child sexual abuse while in the care of an institution to attend.

“You will not be required to discuss your personal story at the community forum, it is a chance to find out more about the work of the Royal Commission and how you can be involved,” he said. In addition to the community forum, private sessions will also be held on the following day,“ Mr Reed said.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market
Hospital at new heights ELDERS Bendigo has continued its good run at auctions with two very different properties selling on the weekend. A smaller two bedroom home set on about 535 square metres in Druid Street Golden Square sold under the hammer before a crowd of between 15 to 20 people last Saturday afternoon. In somewhat of a rarity, the auction was held inside due to the severe weather conditions, but not even an Antarctic blast could stop the sale being achieved. Earlier, Elders also sold a large lifestyle property at picturesque Ravenswood on Belvoir Park Road, with the three bedroom brick veneer home set on 10 acres selling shortly after auction. A huge double storey home in McConnell Drive Junortoun remains for sale in the $680 $760,000 price range after it was passed in on a vendor’s bid at auction last weekend. Offering superb luxury living, and billed as better than a display home, the home is listed for sale with CR Martin. News this week of a $500,000 state government grant for the Bendigo Botanic gardens should please local residents who are keen to see one of the jewels in White Hills get a much anticipated overhaul. The almost $4 million rede-
E.O.F.Y.
velopment of one of the city’s prized heritage assets should result in a major drawcard for Bendigo’s northern suburbs and help further boost the appeal of adjoining suburbs such as Epsom, White Hills, Ascot and Jackass Flat. Work on Bendigo’s new hospital is continuing at a furious pace, with four tower cranes at the Bendigo Hospital Project dominating the city’s skyline. In a construction update released this week, Exemplar Health said the temporary dirt ramp from Drought St into the site has now been removed to allow the final sections of the ground floor slab to be finished by the middle of July.
Structural construction for the oncology ward at the western end of the site is now well under way, while at the eastern end of the site the design of the hospital is now becoming apparent in the form of the slabs with atrium for the street now in place and the structure for the angular cross over bridges being constructed. Preparations for the level three suspended slab are under way and as a result the number of form workers has increased to around 135. The hospital development is helping contribute to the strong underlying growth in local real estate prices and is already a major contributor to the Bendigo economy.
RETRACTION ON June 18, the Bendigo Weekly published a story online about the Greater Bendigo council meeting’s discussion around the approval of the Bendigo mosque. In that story, it was stated: “Former Liberal Party candidate Anita Donlon is a vocal leader here tonight of the anti-mosque objectors.” The Bendigo Weekly acknowledges Ms Donlon is not a leader of any group opposed to the mosque and the Weekly did not mean to infer that she was.

Mosque at VCAT
By CHRISTINE McGINN
AN anti-mosque group will take action against Bendigo’s planned mosque in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The group, Concerned Citizens of Bendigo, decided to appeal Greater Bendigo council’s decision to approve the mosque at “an important public meeting” on Wednesday night in East Bendigo. The group agreed residents would represent themselves at VCAT to ensure no additional funds were required. However, the group warned on the Stop the Mosque in Bendigo facebook page they “will bring in the big legal
Concerned Citizens of Bendigo to appeal decision guns” if they lose. The group has 21 days after being given notice of the original decision to take its case to VCAT. Greater Bendigo council has not yet received notice of the matter appearing at VCAT. The group has also started a red ribbon support campaign encouraging locals to wear or place a ribbon on their belongings. The group appears to be aligned with the Stop the Mosque in Bendigo facebook
page. The group circulated a letter earlier this week inviting locals to discuss “their options moving forward”. Facebook page member Julie Kendall told the Weekly before Wednesday’s meeting that journalists were not welcome at the “closed meeting”. “The purpose of the meeting is to inform people what actions are currently being taken regarding the permit and to have a general debrief on the media hysteria that the objection to planning permit has

raised both here and nationally,” the letter said. The group asked for a “method of contact” to inform locals of future events and their actions regarding the mosque. Another person, believed to be a member of the facebook group, Monika Evers, also declined to comment after the event. The group also shares the same postal address with the Concerned Citizens Fund who raised funds to prevent the mosque earlier this year. The Bendigo Bank forced the Concerned Citizens Fund to close their bank account by April 9 this year.

Printing the future for Keech KEECH Australia has launched a new subsidiary company, with unparallelled 3D advanced manufacturing technology in the region. Keech 3D Advanced Manufacturing is leading the pack in regional Victoria, with the region’s largest 3D format printer. The local company was launched last night, showcasing its advanced manufacturing capacities for central Victoria and internationally. About 150 guests witnessed the unveiling of the large format 3D printer with factory tours and printing demonstrations. Keech Australia chief executive officer Herbert Hermens said 3D printing was “the next Industrial Revolution”. “It is a revolution because you need to think about the possibilities this gives. The versatility is incredible,” he said. “In terms of manufacturing, it is mass manufacturing but on an individual scale because this printing will allow you to just change something, like the colour, it won’t cost anymore because the program will just take care of it and another file will come to play. “What this does for Australia is it gives an opportunity to level the playing field a little bit. It is really important we start as a country to really understand this
PLASTIC FANTASTIC: Chief executive officer at Keech Castings Herbert Hermens with some of the output from the new 3D printer behind him. technology and how best to facilitate this.” Business manager Doug Baird said the new company had developed from a demand for advanced manufacturing technologies. “Keech had been operating a separate pattern-making business for a number of years, but as the company grew they recognised a market opportunity to become more innovative, in order to compete as a global manufacturer. At the same time revolutionary technologies like 3D printers were being developed – and that’s how we have come to be here today,”
he said. More than one million dollars has been invested into the leading technology with the State Government chipping in a $141,700. “We can print in any number of media from paper to ABS plastics, and even metals. The result is a fast and affordable process which makes it easier to move ideas from concept stage to fully functional prototypes and even end-use products,” Mr Baird said. The company assists clients with their product design, digital scanning, CAD modelling, post finishing and reverse engineering.
BENDIGO Police are working to reduce a spate of alcohol thefts across the city. Locals are asked to assist police to identify the man pictured below. Police believe this male could assist them in their investigation into the theft of alcohol from Coles Supermarket on McIvor Highway. Anyone who knows the identity of this man should call Senior Constable Travis Dole at Bendigo Police Station on 5448 1301.
Mr Hermens said it was crucial to compete globally, not just nationally and this technology increased the company’s capacity. “Prototyping is absolutely imperative. We have invested a lot of money into our innovation centre and it is prototyping so we can explain to customers what we want to do and how we want to interact with them,” he said. “Customers can see, now, the value in market place. People are tactile... The need to understand why we are making changes and how we can better help them. The investment necessary to innovate in product is enormous.”
POLICE are also urging drivers to lock their cars after a significant amount of thefts from motor vehicles. Almost 70 per cent of thefts from motor cars across the division (Gisborne to Echuca) most commonly occur in residential areas including driveways, frontyards or parked outside homes. A third of thefts include wallets, purses and handbags, 20 per cent work tools and 10 per cent electrical items. Bendigo Police Senior Sergeant Craig Gaffee said locals were leaving items visible from the outside of the car. “We ask people to remove all opportunities, lock their car, keep valuables out of sight regardless of the location,” he said. “The more people can do to reduce incidents of thefts, the police will can devote more resources to other crimes. This will clearly lessen the impact on owners too.” Snr Sgt Gaffee said offenders were targeting unlocked cars, unsecure tool boxes and other valuable items. Local police members have also been handing out pamphlets and information sheets to remind drivers to lock their vehicles in residential streets and at shopping centres. “Lock your car and remove the opportunity. We ask the community to assist us,” Snr Sgt Gaffee said. A NAVY Toyota Corolla and another vehicle collided in Maiden Gully on last Friday morning. The vehicles collided on the corner of Calder Highway and Smith Road just before 9am. Two people were involved in the incident and have minor injuries. Police and ambulance officers attended the incident. A SUSPICIOUS house fire at West Bendigo last Friday morning is still being investigated. Bendigo Police Sergeant Mick Thompson said the vacant home on Harvey Street was likely to have been used as a squat. No one was injured in the 1.30am fire. Police and CFA attended the incident.

“Due to demand, private sessions in Bendigo have been fully allocated, but we anticipate further private sessions will be held in the region in the future.” Over the past eight weeks, the Bendigo Weekly has highlighted a number of instances of gross mistreatment, including sexual abuse, which occurred at St Aidan’s Orphanage from 1948 to the late 1970s.
“Due to demand, private sessions in Bendigo have been fully allocated” When contacted in March of this year, the Royal Commission said is was “aware of St Aidan’s Orphanage and the allegations of abuse which occurred there from the 1950s to the 1970s. At that stage no public hearing had been scheduled in Bendigo. Sandi Gamble whose story was featured in the Bendigo Weekly, went to St Aidan’s in the early 1970s. Now living in Queensland, Sandi recently attended a private session in Queensland which was or-

After years of people reacting in disbelief to her story and saying that the nuns were incapable of cruelty, Sandi at last felt vindicated. “I felt I had been heard for the first time,” she said. “The private sessions are beneficial and worthwhile, cathartic and healing” she said. The Royal Commission community forum will be hosted together with the Centre Against Sexual Assault – Loddon Campaspe. Executive Officer of CASA, Michael Beaumont-Connop said there has also been an engagement of young people with the agency. “Sexual assault still continues across a number of in-

THE FALLEN GIRLS IN a week where failures in childcare still make the news, Dianne Dempsey charts the lives of ‘the children over’ at St Aidan’s
The women of Maryfields THE residential, Maryfields section of St Aidan’s had different names over the years, some colloquial, others formal. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd first referred to the women who lived in Maryfields and worked in the Magdalene laundry as penitents – they were there to do penance for their sins. They were also called the fallen girls; sent to the convent on court orders and considered to be in moral danger. Some of the girls and women were physically and/or mentally disabled. Some were as young as 11; others remained in Maryfields until they were old women and died. Two of the women I interviewed for this series said as young girls they were terrified that they would never be allowed to leave Maryfields; that they too, would grow old and die within St Aidan’s walls. In the orphanage side of the
convent they called the Maryfields girls, “the children over”. According to former CentaCare director Paul Fogarty, who was also Maryfields chairman from 1999 to 2006, the care within St Aidan’s had been for two groups. One group accommodated girls and boys aged six to 16; and the second section, Maryfields, housed girls and women from about 16. That there is a discrepancy between the official position regarding the age of the girls who lived in Maryfields and the first-hand accounts of witnesses has been a re-occurring observation during the research for this series. When St Aidan’s finally shut its doors in 1984, Mr Fogarty said there were 25 women left in the Maryfields centre. Most were aged in their 40s to 60s and had been at St Aidan’s since they were infants or young children.
Nine of the Maryfields women were considered to be able to live independently. Sixteen others were recognised as needing some intensive support and supervision. The Sisters of Good Shepherd provided support to enable the women to adapt to their new life-
secured from the Department of Human Services to employ a support worker to co-ordinate the care needed for the ladies. Prior to this time, these women had few decisions to make in St Aidan’s. The sisters had ensured they received a basic schooling, but
All they wanted was to be accepted individually as themselves style in a secure way. They gave this new activity the name of the Maryfields Centre, according to Mr Fogarty. CentaCare took over the work of Maryfields in 1988 and became responsible through a committee of management for the supportive welfare and care of the 16 women who were previously cared for by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in group homes in Bendigo. At that time, funding was also
after this, many had jobs in the laundry and in the kitchen. A few were given jobs outside St Aidan’s. All had been institutionalised to the detriment of their relationships with the broader community and their own independent capacities. Seldom were there discussions held by them later in life about their experiences within institutional living. According to Catholic Sand-
hurst Diocese Monsignor Frank Marriot, several of the women were extremely holy, having modelled their life on that of the sisters. The Maryfields ladies were accommodated in homes or units within the Catholic parish boundaries of Kennington. Some members of St Therese’s Catholic Parish Kennington became the ongoing members of the Maryfields board of management and each had a personal interest in the ladies and a deep sense of ministry for the wellbeing of the ladies. Mr Fogarty said the lives of the women touched many who knew them. ”All they wanted was to be accepted individually as themselves,” he said. “Without awareness they taught other people about compassion, patience and generosity.” The last of the Maryfields women died in 2013.
So what’s changed? A COUNSELLOR and a former resident of Allambi’s Children’s Home in the 1970s, Evelyn Chittleborough said that in another 20 years she didn’t want to see another Royal Commission and another apology made to the victims of government policy. “There still isn’t an answer to how we care for children in out of home care,” she said.
“Children who are vulnerable... will continue to suffer” “For years the government passed this responsibility onto the religious orders and then they failed to audit those organisations to see how the children were being cared for.” This is a view that is in part supported by one of Australia’s leading experts in childhood trauma, Gregory Nicolau. The CEO of the Australian Childhood Trauma Group, Nicolau said we have not made a lot of progress since the Forgotten Australians senate report of 2004. He added that recommendations
from inquiries are often not followed through. But he says it’s too easy to blame governments. “Certainly Royal Commissions put the issue of abuse in out of home care on the front pages but you don’t see a lot of community concern for what happens to children. I’m hoping the current government and the community as well will stand up and say we have to get it right this time. “It is true that there are simply not enough resources to go around but if society continues to buy the line that we should individually pay less taxes, then those children who are vulnerable through no fault of their own will continue to suffer. “It is still not uncommon to see run down residential units across Australia,” Mr Nicolau said. “Things are broken, and the processes and protocols lead to delays if not years in some cases for things to be repaired. The residential carer may take the view that if the children have broken furniture they just have to live with it. As well some children are in foster homes where the care is not optimum. “Having said that there are some heroic people working in group homes, residential units and as foster parents.” Nicolau said the essence to un-

actions to get attention, to be fed and held, it cries. “In older children and adults if that stress is not resolved, it becomes toxic. The brain goes into survival mode. “The imperative for a young person is safety and if they don’t feel safe, they will act out or become disruptive. “Children show their wounds through their behaviour. They are saying I’m scared, lost confused, ashamed etc. Make me safe. Help me. “Carers need to respond by helping to regulating the child’s emotional state and strengthen connections. When kids become disruptive they need to put water on the fire rather

than fuel the fire.” Mr Nicolau said he has worked with out of home care agencies for more than 20 years and time and time again he sees staff given blunt tools to do microsurgery. “These traumatised children need people who are highly qualified experts. This means that a lot of money has to be spent, and if that’s the case then so be it. I often use the analogy that you wouldn’t put a nurse with a Cert IV qualification into an ICU unit. And if I were to continue the analogy of nursing with the development of out of home care, then the starting date would be about 1910. We are still in the dark ages as far treating traumatised children are concerned.”

derstanding how to best care for children lies in understanding the impact of childhood trauma and attachment disruptions. “At times I feel desperate that the community does not understand the impact of trauma and broken attachments on children,” Mr Nicolau said. “There is plenty of research out here that tells us that children suffer psychological, physiological, emotional and spiritual damage when they experience separation from their parents, even as babies. This trauma is compounded when they then witness family disruptions such as domestic violence. “The brain itself suffers neurological damage. A baby relies on its own

Big changes in store

MAIDEN GULLY residents will be given more choice at their local supermarket under proposed $6.9 million development plans. The current IGA supermarket premises on the Calder Highway are being planned for redevelopment to accommodate a “fullsize” supermarket. The proposed sleek, contemporary design with bursts of red are have aim to ensure a visually aesthetic shopping complex. The new supermarket would feature 3200 square metres of floorspace and boast a liquor store. The existing supermarket would be expanded, traffic and access points altered to ensure shoppers could easily access the site. Goldstrike Development director Andrew Liddell said they
wanted a new supermarket to meet the growing needs of the Maiden Gully community and “look good”. “The expansion of the site will be needed in the future. There has been steady growth in Maiden Gully and there is proposed further growth in the

certain size for the community but as the community grows, the supermarket will need to grow too.” The proposed plans fit into the Maiden Gully Structure Plan, fitting the complex into the designated commercial area “It is considered that the proposed development is an appropriate development for the subject site and will greatly assist in achieving the future built form and land use outcomes that have been put forth in the Maiden Gully Structure Plan,” the application at council said. “The ultimate aim of the Urban Design Framework would be to create a vibrant, accessible and high-functioning town centre.” Greater Bendigo council is yet to consider the planning proposal.
Money on the horizon HOMELESS youth will be given a hand up as Myer Bendigo donates $1600 towards Horizon House. Myer Bendigo staff raised the money to help homeless youth get back on their feet and give back to the local community. Manager Michael Watson said they were committed to assisting the local community. “The late Sydney Myer who came to Bendigo and started the first store was homeless when he arrived at the diggings. He built his empire from these humble beginnings but never forgot the homeless experience,” he said. “We are very focussed on supporting the community that we are based in. It is a long legacy that Sidney Myer has left to support the community that you are working in. “Horizon House do a lot of

great work with disadvantaged kids. We are hoping they can use this money to take that to the next step.” The Myer Foundation also made a $1.4 million contribution to Sidney Myer Haven resi-
dential complex and will have a transition home for youth in this complex. Horizon House chairman Robert Cook said he was thrilled to accept the donation to help locals.
“The money will be used to help clothes the kids in the house,” he said. “The partnership with Myer is fantastic and means they we will be able to accommodate more young people.”
New hope for sufferers CYSTIC fibrosis sufferers have been given new hope with positive clinical drug trial results. Sufferers with the most common type of CF showed significant improvements when combining Kalydeco and a new drug called, Lumacaftor (VX-809). “We are on the cusp of seeing the medical cure for CF,” father of a daughter with CF, Tim McCrohan said. “About 80 per cent of CF people can benefit from the corresponding drugs. “To put in perspective, 2000 people would come out of hospitals in one fell swoop. People would be taken off life-support and their life costs would be reduced.” Pharmaceutical company Vertex released their findings last week, showing sufferers with two copies of the F508del mutation had improved. The combined drug treatment improved people’s lung function, increased weight gain, reduced pulmonary exacerbations and other key measures of the condition. Positive results have found a potential treatment to combine the pills to address the underlying genetic cause of CF. About 200 phase three trials were conducted in North America, Europe and Australia. More than 1100 people, aged 12 or older, with the F508del mutation participated in the study which tested two different doses of the combination. Sufferers placed on the combination drugs fared significantly better than those on the placebo. The Lumacaftor drug moves the F508del CFTR protein to the cell surface where Kalydeco improves it function and increases the “normal flow” of salt and fluids into and out of the cell. “Kalydeco opens the gate and Lumacaftor gets in and fixes the genotype,” Mr McCrohan said. CFV acting chief executive officer Felicia Welstead said the results were positive but the fight to access the drug was ongoing. “While this is exciting news for some people living with CF, in Australia we are so far behind we still have people with the G551D mutation waiting to access Kalydeco,” she said. “The fact is the PBAC and Vertex have not as yet come to an agreement and CF families have been left in limbo waiting for access to Kalydeco.”

Roos take a toll

BENDIGO has taken out the state’s top position with the most kangaroorelated vehicle collisions at 135 last year. AAMI insurance data found Bendigo (postcode 3551) had recorded the largest number of claims in 2013. Taking out silver, Heathcote had 99 claims, swiftly followed by Craigeburn at 76, Gisbourne at 69 and Whittlesea/Kinglake at 66. The Bendigo area was the sixth highest in the nation for the number of wildlife-related collision claims. Corporate Affairs manager Reuben Aitchison said animal related claims rose 40 per cent in winter compared to summer. “Through the winter months, daylight is shorter and we are on the roads more at the very time of day when animals, such
as kangaroos, tend to be more active and invade our roadways,” he said. “Colliding with an animal can result in serious damage or injury. Even if the driver is unharmed, knowing they’ve injured or killed an animal is a

I do believe kangaroo related collisions are on the rise highly distressing experience.” Penno Smash Repairs director Nick Penno said he was not surprised by AAMI’s findings regarding claims in Bendigo last year. “Bendigo is a major regional city and with continued growth our population is spreading out into our regional suburbs and encroaching on the habitat of our native wildlife,” he said. VicRoads Regional director Mal Kersting said
crashes involving wildlife movements within the actual major urban areas of Bendigo,” he said. Mr Penno said eight cars arrived at PSR each week for repairs after kangaroo-related collisions. “I do believe kangaroo related collisions are on the rise and will probably continue to rise as Bendigo‘s population increases,” he said. “Damage often caused to clients’ vehicles is a result of frontal impact with kangaroos, front bumper
bars, headlights, bonnets and even the windscreen and roof are often affected. We do see damages to the side of vehicles that can sometimes even affect all panels down one side.” Mr Aitchison said the average animal-related claim cost $4500. “There is a reason it’s called wildlife – it’s unpredictable. Animals are not taught to ‘look right, look left and look right again’ before crossing the road, so slow down and be aware of the environment you’re driving in,” he said. Mr Kersting reminds drivers to take care driving on rural roads. “Be aware that native animals will be moving across roads during any part of the day,” he said. “There can be an increase in these movements during dawn and dusk, which is a time when native animals, such as kangaroos are more likely to be moving about.”

Bosom Buddies are back NOT content with raising $42,000, the Bosom Buddies are stepping up their game. The team of 14 walkers are setting off again next year on a 60 kilometre repeat in a bid to pull in more cash. They have some serious extra backing this year. “Brikkitta from D-Club has come on board as a major sponsor with a money donation and also supplied all 14 of us with a free nine-month membership,” team leader Kate Newman said. “We all found last year’s event inspiring, and the cause has relevance to everybody. “Once more the wonderful people of Bendigo put their hands in their pockets for a good cause.” The Bosom Buddies have a few events in the run-up to the event on February 28 next year. One is a Melbourne Cup day luncheon on Tuesday, November 4 from 11.30am. It’s hosted by 3BO’s Bec and is at The Foundry Hotel, with all proceeds raised going to Peter Mac. Details from 0412 572 442.

The Discovery Science and Technology Centre in Railway Place, is holding one of its regular sessions from 5pm to 6.30pm. See the Moon’s craters, mountains and seas, close up and in fine detail. “You can also see Saturn with its beautiful rings, Mars the red planet and more,” event organiser Brien Blackshaw said. “The idea started in the United States with the idea of taking astronomy to the public. We like to make it convenient for people to have perhaps their first taste of astronomy. “Some people find out about the event from the website, and then there are the regular attendees. “But a lot of people are just walking to the station as they pass us. “They ask to have a look, and they walk away changed.”

The small army of volunteers who help make the festival run smoothly is gearing up again to prepare for the August 8 to 10 weekend. Volunteer coordinator, Deborah Blake, is putting out a call for new members of the volunteer team. This year, they’ll be wearing bright new BWF2014 tshirts, as they staff the doors of each of the four simultaneous venues, and work behind the scenes making sure writers are looked after and get to their sessions on time. “Our volunteers have been a crucial part of the festival,” artistic director Rosemary Sorensen said.

The award is one of the nation’s top prizes for Year 12 students undertaking Vocational Education and Training in school. The four are Ebony Clarke of Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Shanae Finning and Brett Priestley from Castlemaine Secondary College and Lawson Kelsey from Glenvale School, Bendigo Campus. Former BSSC student Ebony Clarke completed the VET Certificate II in Community Services last year. This involved a combination of study at BSSC and work at the Victoria

Ebony explained how completing the VET Certificate II gave her a head start in her chosen career. “I chose this pathway because I wanted to benefit my local community and work in a profession where I could help people,” she said. Ebony’s employer Andrew Spencer, Director of Nursing at Victoria Heights explains. “Since her first day at work Ebony has shown great promise and natural ability. She shows great understanding, compassion and respect for all of the elderly residents.” BSSC offers students a range of Certificate II and III level courses, with opportunities to undertake on the job training. “Ebony should be very proud of winning this award and her success in finding employment in

Finding harmony in our city’s diversity On Friday, June 27 my photo was published in an article in the Bendigo Weekly with the caption reading: “Ready for Ramadan: Noemi Cummings.” I am an active Christian elder at the Bendigo Seventh-Day Adventist Church. I do not celebrate Ramadan which is a Muslim tradition. The Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services is a non-for-profit community organisation that for many years have convened the Loddon Campaspe Multi-Faith Network, providing opportunities for exchange and dialogue on different faiths and cultures. The network also promotes understanding and friendship between people of different faiths. We offer the City of Greater Bendigo our common commitment to seek a life together in peace and goodwill. We affirm our desire to promote respect and understanding for the integrity of each other’s beliefs, cultures and traditions. We recognise that as neighbours we have responsibilities to the community, the world and ourselves. We therefore urge all citizens, both religious and non-religious, to break down the barriers of prejudice and work together to live with understanding and harmony. At LCMS, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Greater Bendigo council, we deliver cultural festivals, events and forums promoting Harmony in Diversity and the richness of our region thanks to such great diversity, for more information visit www.lcms.org.au, www. lcmsnews.org.au or at www.facebook.com/ lcmsbendigo. Not racist or bigoted to uphold core values The articles and letters in your newspaper deriding those who oppose the building of a mosque in Bendigo, simply ridicule the objectors instead of dealing what underpins the objections. It’s neither racist nor bigotry to want to uphold the core values of our society against those who would trample them. The objectors are quite rightly concerned with what is contained within the guiding book of Islam, the Koran. There are passages which advocate that Muslims should live in peace with nonMuslims. But, there are more passages which advocate violence and hatred and op-
pression of non-Muslims. It’s these passages which are used by the Islamic terrorist, the extremists, to justify their outrageous behaviour. What are the moderate peace-loving Muslims, and those who support the building of a mosque in Bendigo, doing to make Islam into a religion that is completely compatible with our western values? The answer is clear, nothing constructive. It’s the oldest trick of propaganda. Create an enemy which you can use to falsely claim the moral high ground. Having a multicultural love-in through the pages of the local newspapers is being used as a substitute for actually going into bat for those Australian values which you falsely claim that the opponents of the mosque are not up-holding. Given that the mosque will be built, it’s an opportunity for those who support its establishment to encourage the local Muslims to deal with the destructive aspects of their religion. It could be that Bendigo will lead the world in ridding the Koran of its offensive passages. Stephen Mooney, Bendigo
A natural component of Bendigo’s evolution La Trobe University supports the Bendigo Muslim community’s efforts to establish a mosque in Bendigo to serve the needs of their members. Since its establishment in 1998, the Muslim Prayer Room at the University’s Flora Hill Campus has been the only one in Bendigo. Originally developed for the use of students and staff studying at the Campus, at various times the facility has also been used by the broader community, but is not of a size to accommodate all of those who would like to access the facility. The room has capacity for approximately 40 people. La Trobe University congratulates the Muslim community on taking the initiative to raise funds and develop their own house of worship to cater for their needs in Bendigo. Bendigo is growing in both size and population diversity, and with this will come religious and cultural diversity. This is part of what continues to enhance Bendigo’s reputation as a city of opportunity and innovation, and helps to make it an exciting and welcoming place in which to live and work. La Trobe University sees this development as a natural component of the evolution of Bendigo, on its journey to becoming the best Regional City in Australia. Robert V. Our Democracy ensures freedoms By Lisa Chesters MP
Federal Member for Bendigo The majority of us have been shocked and saddened by the opposition to a mosque planning application. This kind of intolerance is not Bendigo, which we were able to see in the rainbow balloon campaign, which I was proud to be a part of. It was some comfort to learn that the anti-mosque campaign is largely being organised and funded from outsiders. But there are a small number of locals are concerned about the mosque development. I stress a very small number have contacted my office or have spoken to me in person about their opposition to the mosque. Their reasons can only be described as radical and founded on misinformation. One of their unfounded claims is that Sharia Law will be imposed on all Australians. It is simply not possible. Our Australian laws and our democracy are robust and protect our people’s freedoms and rights. Our Australian Constitution provides the basic rules for the government of Australia. Indeed, the Constitution is

pate in Australian Citizenship Ceremonies. It’s always an honour to be able to join other local elected representatives to welcome and celebrate members of our community’s step to become an Australian citizen. During the Greater Bendigo ceremonies, our mayor reads the following to the audience: “Australia has a commitment to various values and institutions. These include parliamentary democracy, equality before the law, freedom of the individual, freedom of speech and religion, equality between men and women, and equality of opportunity for all. “Citizenship also brings civil and social rights—the right to express your cultural heritage and beliefs, coupled with a responsibility to accept the rights of others to express their heritage and beliefs.” It is disappointing that in the past few weeks a handful have forgotten or chosen to ignore these words. As one of our community’s elected representatives, I am proud to stand up for these values. They define who we are as a nation and as a community. It’s not good enough when elected representatives or those seeking to be elected representatives speak against these freedoms or duck making a public comment by saying they are not across the issues.

the fundamental law of Australia binding everybody including the Commonwealth Parliament and the Parliament of each State. Accordingly, even an Act passed by a Parliament is invalid if it is contrary to the Constitution. The only way to amend the Constitution is by referendum. Before there can be any change to the Constitution, a majority of electors must vote in favour of the change. In addition, there must be a majority vote in a majority of States, that is, in four out of the six States. Ordinarily, before a matter can be the subject of a referendum, both Houses of the Commonwealth Parliament must pass the proposed law containing the suggested amendment of the constitution. For the few who are concerned or not sure, it’s important to remember our nation’s constitution and our robust democracy will ensure our freedoms and rights are protected into the future. We should continue to celebrate our citizenship and the rights and freedoms that come with it. Two displays of how we, as an nation, celebrate our citizenship are Australian Day and Citizenship Ceremonies. that they realised what happened to literally hundreds of children in their midst. While Michelle gave graphic details of physical beatings, a nun once kicked her in the head with her boot, she said the psychological damage was on-lasting. “It affects you completely throughout your whole life. You lose your childhood, you blank entire periods out. You don’t develop,” she said. And there was Linda Newton’s testimonial. Linda, from Golden Square, said that she hadn’t spoken to anyone before about her St Aidan’s experiences, but after seeing the stories, felt encouraged to come forward. Linda too was beaten, pushed under the bath water; made to stand with a wet sheet on her head and drag her wet mattress around behind her. She had her hair cut off and was locked in a dark cellar for long periods of time. “I’m still afraid of the dark to this day,”she said. It sounds too cruel to be true, but sadly Linda’s testimony is consistent with many other stories we have been told. When asked if she wished to remain anonymous, Linda replied that she wanted to use her own name. “I made a close friend in the orphanage, it was in the 1950s, and I still think of her,” she said. “Her name was Rhonda. Perhaps she will read this article and get in touch with me.”
pk New faces in the Senate with Peter Kennedy
THIS week the complexion of the Australian Senate will change somewhat dramatically with a new group of MPs taking their position in the elite group of 76 politicians that make up the Senate. There’s arguably more diversity and unpredictability among these newbies than we’ve seen in a long time, and possibly in the entire history of Australian politics. There are eight cross-bench senators from a mixed bag that includes the Palmer United Party, Family First, a Liberal Democrat, the Democrat Labour Party, a Motoring Enthusiast (that’s a party not a hobby) and the high profile South Australian Nick Xenophon. The election of many of this collective to the parliament has drawn widespread criticism and condemnation from political observers and the general com-
munity, but in the end Australians have only themselves to blame. For example, it’s not the fault of the Motoring Enthusiast’s Ricky Muir that a series of deals, agreements and swaps led to his meteoric rise to fame to the office of Senator.
be a more than a capable representative of the people – and to be fair, that’s one thing I was never able to achieve in two failed attempts at the state and federal level. For his part, Senator Muir has aligned himself with the Palmer United Party, at least
That more than 20 fragmented parties, splinter groups and single issue parties can allocate preferences in such a way is a disgrace. Effectively another candidate who received less than 0.5 per cent of the vote is determined to be the sixth best candidate from Victoria for election to the Senate. I wish Senator Muir well, and hope he proves himself to
for now. But the responsibilities each of the eight cross-bench Senators must face up to in a parliament such as the one we now have are incredibly daunting and serious. That balance of power is not just a challenge. It’s also an enormous pressure test. twitter@peterkennedy23 pk@bendigoweekly.com.au

the Child Abuse Royal Commission which will be coming to Bendigo later this month. Another outcome of the series was a letter of apology which was sent to us by the Province Leader of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. It reads in part, ”The Good Shepherd sisters have apologised in the past to any former residents who may have unhappy memories of harsh treatment during their time with us. I repeat that apology here”. Finally the series logically lead us to examine, in this issue, the state of out of home care in Australia today. According to our research the problem is still not fixed. Children continue to suffer today and young people will also be among those approaching the Royal Commission when it comes to Bendigo. Over the past few months we have sometimes felt we were running a welfare agency instead of a newspaper. We have been mindful of listening to people in a responsible and caring way and made sure they were aware of the agencies available to help them such as the Care Leavers Australia Network who assist people who are attending the Royal Commission (1800 008 774). The last words on St Aidan’s belong to the two women who most recently contacted us. Michelle Callanan said that it was important for the people of Bendigo

editorial WHEN the Weekly first began its Fallen Women series in May, there was an initial outcry of indignation. Many people in the Bendigo community were in denial. How could the Sisters of the Good Shepherd be capable of harming their charges, the vulnerable orphans and the “fallen women” who were in their care? If the public response was not one of disbelief it was along the lines of “these things occurred in the past why bring them up now?” Jack Thompson, the actor who was adopted as a young boy, is worth quoting on this point.“If we do not recognise the fundamental inhumanity and cruelty... the awfulness carried out in the name of God and goodness, then we will ignore the fact that it didn’t happen in the last century, it happened in this century and in many parts of our society continues to happen. Let us look at this thing in the face; let us deal with it.” We were soon vindicated for running the series as each week former residents of St Aidan’s came forward with their harrowing stories. Encouraged to discover they were not alone in their experiences, the numbers of people who contacted us exponentially increased as the series continued. These people not only talked to the Weekly but we believe several former residents will be attending

Morag’s big night out
dear dotty...
It was a case of deja vu when our black cat made her mark in the laundry
W
ITH all the mud my house is like CSI. In the TV program, the Crime Scene Investigators find small clues and piece together clues to track down the killer. After they have been with their fingerprint powder and high-tech blue lights, the perpetrator may just as well left a business card. Clues aplenty. My black cat Skinny, who is not, loves investigating, and most of it is via the mud. Following a good splosh about Skinny squeezes in through the cat door and leaves clues of her whereabouts in the most visible form, no need for CSI here. I don’t know how the mud goes so far, it’s like she re-inks her feet and then goes in for another go. First there’s the trail in from the cat flap, which you’d expect, but there seems to be 14 tracks in from the cat flap, 25 tracks across the bench, and the newest trick, cat tracks up the cabinets and washing machine.

I can say one thing for Skinny, she leaves no stone un-turned in her attempt at covering every centimetre. I noticed this week there are a few tracks appearing down the hall. She must have a new mud pool nearby. But all this pales to insignificance when I remember the story of another black cat I had when I lived in Scotland, Morag was her name. I woke up one dark wintery night to the most awful smell. Like a horror movie rather than CSI. All the ghost stories came back to me as I smelt something from beyond the grave.

an oil lump at the same time as the corpse, and managed a trail across the floor, the benchtops and the cookery books. On closer inspection the trail extended to our doona cover. This all happened more than 10 years ago, and Morag has joined the seabird in its final resting place, but every time a cookbook is used, or the blue-striped doona cover is on the bed we have an oily reminder of Morag’s big night out. I guess I should be thankful Skinny only found the mud pile. twitter: @stevekendall1

Dear Dotty, The other day I found a bottle of Veuve Cliquot hidden at the back of my pantry. I looked it up online and found out it is a very expensive chamnpagne. What should I do? Sally, Eaglehawk Dear Sally, Drink it now. No wait. Ring me up and I’ll pop over and help you. Kind regards, Dotty Dear Dotty, I am really worried about the proposed new mosque and the noise the call to prayer will make. I moved to the country for peace and quiet. Allen, East Bendigo Dear Allen, You should complain. I live near the cathedral. Whenever anybody dies or gets married I can’t get a park and boy you should hear those bells. The bells! The bells! It was a dank and deathly smell, and I admit I hesitated before turning on the light. On the bedroom carpet was a large, and very dead seabird. We lived on the loch shore, so there was no doubt it had washed up some days ago and Morag brought it in as a gift. It was oily and stinky, and far from what was needed at 3am. Thankfully, the long-suffering Mrs Kendall pronounced it dead and removed it. Next morning I went to the kitchen to find black footprints everywhere. Darling Morag had found
Dear Dotty Does it annoy you that Americanisms continue to creep into our language? It does me. That latest being: “From the get go.” Grrrrr. Mr Bean, Kennington Dear Mr Bean, Yes it is awfully annoying just like, “Have a nice day”. Now that phrase has blighted our lives for years now. Quite often I don’t want to have a nice day. I want to wallow in buckets of misery and console myself with orange cordial and twisties and gin and stuff. Another Americanism is “God bless America”. They clearly think they have the copyright on God. Why should God pick out America as his favourite country? What’s wrong with us? People clearly expect God to take sides and I have a sneaking suspicion he doesn’t. Apart from phrases I have been long been appalled by American names. Have you ever heard of an Australian called Chuck, Chip, Clint, Brandy, Buzz or Johnboy for that matter? While on the subject of names, Americans eat cookies instead of biscuits, ketchup instead of sauce and jelly instead of jam. To quote the great philosopher, Thomas the Tank Engine, it’s not wrong, but you just don’t do it.

Star has bright future E
AGLEHAWK’S Star Cinema has a digital future after a campaign to raise funds to buy vital equipment. The equipment has now been installed and the cinema has welcomed positive feedback from audiences who have been to the cinema to see, and hear for themselves. “We are so grateful for the support in the community, from local businesses, funding bodies and our amazing and supportive patrons,” Star Cinema manager Hannah Morton said. “It looks incredible up there, but
probably the most noticeable and substantial improvement has been to our sound system – it sounds incredible. “And we now have much greater access to current titles – it’s very exciting.” The cinema officially launches the digital upgrade at a gala event tonight, with a screening of the feelfabulous film Sunshine on Leith. “We are all looking forward to popping the cork on a couple of bottles of champagne and toasting the future of the Star,” Ms Morton said.

WO Bendigo men have come up with a plan which will revitalise The Pub in Hargreaves Street. Tim Stubs and Noel Paech have opened a not-for-profit business for sound and lighting hire for Bendigo. The group will only cater for other nonprofit organisations to cut down on expenses. This will enable fundraisers to operate on lower budgets. “I have been in the entertainment industry since the age of 10 as a performer, some backstage work, sound and lighting tech, and touring with bands,” Mr Paech said. “I am a carer for my disabled wife and not able to work so I thought this would be a good way to put back my experience back into the local community.” The duo have taken on the disused night club The Pub at 173 Hargreaves Street, which has been closed since 2009. “We found not only would it be an ideal place for storage, but also an area we could redevelop for an under 18s venue,” Mr Paech said. “We plan to hire the venue for parties of all descriptions and it can be used for hiring of community events for fundraising and school socials. “We will first open our doors on Saturday, September 6 with its new name The Venue for a public open day from 10am till 4pm.” On Friday, September 12 The Venue will opening as an under 18s night club and on Saturday open with bands and as a night club. Details from 0429 160 087.

Culinary questions with Jody and Brent Loam of the Willow Room Q. What are some uses for lemon curd? A. A good jar of lemon curd in the fridge is a very versatile ingredient and great for quick easy desserts or sweet treats. It’s delicious served with fresh baked friands, madeleines or short breads. It’s great on fruit toast, or a tartlet pastry filling. Also try making orange or lime curd for something different. Myer lemons make a great curd. Q. What are some other ways to serve lambs fry? A. Lambs fry is so often served with bacon and gravy. To try something different serve the lambs fry with stewed sweet and sour onions on wet polenta and chopped sage leaves. For a great lunch serve on grilled sour dough bread with rocket leaves, fresh pear and balsamic dressing. Q. What are Churros? A. Churros are fried doughnuts that are usually long star shaped sticks or a knotted bow. They are typically eaten in Spain and Portugal as a breakfast of brunch snack dipped in hot chocolate or coffee. They are now quite popular everywhere and often found on restaurant and café menus or at festivals and markets.

AYBE it’s the thought of warmer climates, maybe it’s the World Cup, but I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about ways of eating that are different to ours. All of those things have led me to Spanish food in the past couple of weeks. First it was a lunch at Sangria for the May (or was it April) edition of my monthly lunch date. We probably look like an odd combination us three, but our rhythm of life now depends on that monthly catch up, reminiscing about old times (like the day of the hot dog eating competition at the Metro) and analysing the present. We were blown away with our lunch at Sangria. Like us, I suspect the little
place in Victoria Lane has found its groove. Of course we over-ordered but every little bowl was full of intense flavour bursts – goats cheese, mushrooms, fried potato. All good. After a big day of work one Friday, I dragged the family to Sangria, tapas making perfect food for kids at the end of the week when you have run out of puff to supervise cutlery use. Raff was also a big fan of the “pretend wine” or mock sangria. So far I haven’t ventured further than the tapas selection. All have passed that test where you are still thinking about them days later. I’ve never really “got” churros. In theory they sound great: warm chocolate, fried dough, sugar. Despite trying

them even in some well regarded places, they had always disappointed. However, the churros at Sangria made me realise what the hype is about. Crisp on the outside, fluffy inside: this must be what they are all about. Mind you there are a couple of quince desserts I’m keen to try as well. I’m plotting a need

The artworks with the rich colours, animals and plants of the Australian outback are a feature of this book, the story of a young aboriginal girl who wandered away from her family. While she was lost, she found a waterhole and some bush food and a cosy place to sleep, then followed a crow until she found her family’s camp and was happily re-united. The beauty and importance of the natural world are gently stressed in this short fable, ideal for early primary school- aged children.
family, and proudly watches them grow into healthy adults, when the inevitable happens and they fly off to follow their natural instincts. Sadly, Miss Molly resumes her solitary life, until one day she hears the familiar chortling song of a magpie on the branch outside her window, and sees two magpies and two fledgling babies waiting to meet her. The writer’s theme of wildlife conservation is engaging, and the black and white illustrations are perfect for a story about magpies; it is recommended for five to 10 year olds. -Kaye Poole

Bec is golden B
EC LAUGHTON is at the Golden Vine tonight. Bec is an extraordinary talent and she and her band will be putting on an explosive show for any and all Bendigonians who come out for it. Bec Laughton has been working her way into the hearts and earholes of soul, R&B and pop lovers for a while now, but meanwhile has been working away on a brand new EP - M&R. Following the success of singles Gonna Love You and Number One (Heartbreak) the M&R tour will introduce

Joe’s in town JOE CAMILLERI is backing independent music next week, with a visit to Hardcopy in Lyttleton Terrace. The former front man for Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, and the Black Sorrows is leaving all that behind with his new album. Hardcopy owner Peter Taylor is playing host to Camilleri next Tuesday, July 8 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm offering a chance to meet and greet. “He’s supporting me because I am the only independent record store in town,” Taylor said.
audiences to what truly makes Laughton special... an incredible live show packed with energy, and exhibiting some of the most innovative songwriting in the country. Laughton is quickly solidifying her position as one of Australia’s rising talents. Colin Thompson’s original band We The Radio will be playing the opening set for this gig. “I’m not sure whether to feel more excited or daunted at the prospect of performing before Bec and her ultra-funky band,” Thompson said.
LL Day Venus is the follow up to Adalita’s self-titled LP, and she’s bringing her new tour to Castlemaine tomorrow to show it off. Born from periods of intense creativity and personal reflection, the 12 songs on the album are dark, brooding and unflinchingly honest, bursting with energy and physicality. This is an album aimed equally at the head, heart, hips and feet. The first glimpse of the new LP was revealed at the beginning of July, with the release of the title track. With its eloquent and insightful lyrics and exhilarating, reverb-soaked guitars, All Day Venus proclaimed the return of one of our most lauded and loved local artists. Now, Adalita reveals the first official single from the album, Warm Like You. Forged from a heavy, detuned guitar progression,
Warm Like You is loud, powerful and dynamic, with an almost orchestral swoon underpinning the track’s driving glam stomp. Adalita is elated at the pros-

pect of sharing new music. “I cannot tell you all how super excited I am about this new album,” she said. “It’s been two years in the
making and an enormous amount of energy has gone into it. “This record is really about so many things but mainly I think it’s about growing up. I think I came to a point as an adult where I realised a lot of new things about myself mainly through the transformative nature of romantic love gone wrong. “In tandem with this theme I was also very drawn to beautiful images of the female form, flowers, fountains and waterways presided over by a female figure, sometimes young and innocent, sometimes a dark, powerful huntress. For me this relates to the mystery of the feminine and the sacred nature of beauty.” Catch Adalita at The Bridge Hotel Castlemaine on what will be a night to remember on Saturday. Doors open at 8.30pm. $20 pre-sale tix or $25 on the door. – Lou Risdale

LD faded stamped concrete is a thing of the past. Many years ago this was the trend to get your concrete stamped and coloured as you got it poured, but over the years property owners have seen their concrete fade as the pattern disappears. OME of the staff and pets of Bendigo Animal Hospital recently attended the RSCPA’s Million Paws Walk held at Lake Weeroona in May. There was good community support for the event, all out to support a great cause and to take a brisk walk around the lake, some stopping to make the most of the doggy water trough provided by the team at the Boardwalk. “It was great to talk with many of our customers and their families who were also enjoying the day,” Bendigo Animal Hospital practice manger Jamie Tuohey said. “This was the first time my daughters and I have attended the walk and I was surprised to see so many different breeds, my daughters were amazed watching them all stroll by and taking the opportunity for a
friendly pat where possible. “Our free show bags full of information and goodies were well received as well. “Congratulations to Jai and Otis, the winners of our 2014 RSPCA Million Paws Walk Competition. Otis went home with a three month supply of Revolution flea and heartworm treatment.” Bendigo Animal Hospital staff and their pets look forward to attending next year’s event and will continue to support the community through various fundraising activities. All because of some fish F
ollowing the posting of notices at Epsom, Bendigo’s Bridge Street and at the Ironbark Chinese Camp, Fok Sing the head man of the Three Districts Chinese, felt that he had events going his way. The notice was created following a meeting in the Three Districts Hall in response to shopkeeper Rok A’Ying having prosecuted two men from Fok Sing’s society. The wording of the flyer was quite damaging for the commercial interests of Rok A’Ying and his two points of trading. Punishment awaited those who were responsible for making transactions with Rok A’Ying, and a substantial reward was offered to any person supplying information of those who were trading with the store keeper. The punishment documented was not only a very costly fine for the person or persons purchasing at those stores, but also the infliction of lashes. This lash was to be applied to the thighs of the guilty person, as well as to the soles of the feet. Fok Sing had stated that in addition to the fine, 50 lashes would be applied. When the Caucasian policing authorities
learned of the wording of Fok Sing’s signed and sealed flyer, a warrant was taken out for his arrest along with that of Moy Chong the secretary of the Three Districts. These two men were to be charged with “conspiracy”. Following the arrest of the two men, the prosecution had gone to the trouble to have two Chinese interpreters on hand, one having come from as far away as Ararat. Well known Bendigo legal men in 1861, appeared at the court. Mr Helm for the prosecution and Mr Lysaght along with Mr O’Laughlin for the two defendants. The two men Fok Sing and Moy Chong, had verbally indicated to Rok A’Ying at his Bridge Street store, the consequences if he went ahead and charged the two men from the Three Districts with stealing a quantity of preserved fish. As indicated last week the two men who had allegedly stolen the fish, were dealt with in court, however the evidence had been inconclusive and the case was dismissed. Fok Sing had made good on his verbal threats and now was also facing court with Moy Chong. Among those who

The stores traded as Kum Quong Lee. A’Lum stated to the court that subsequently there were a number of people who had received the lashes and the fine as documented on the notice. Corroborating the evidence by A’Lum was that by another man, A’Hong, who had been at the meeting of the Three Districts where the decision of the content and
punishments indicated on the notices was made. Whilst A’Sou told the Court that he had seen the flyers being posted up in a number of places. Fok Sing and the secretary of the Three Districts Moy Chong, said they only had been arrested by the evidence of Rok A’Ying purely through spite. Lachlan MacLachlan, the Police magistrate, committed the two charged men to stand trial in the Circuit Court. At the hearing in the Circuit Court, presided over by Justice Robert Molesworth, the charge of “conspiracy” of Fok Sing and Moy Chong was proved.
presiding: Justice Robert Molesworth
As a result of the conspiracy charge both men were jailed for three days and fined £50. The fine was substantial, as it represented half a year’s wages, it was immediately paid.
he Sacred Heart Cathedral grandly welcomes people to Bendigo and the nearby Wattle and Cathedral Squares complement their impressive surrounds. For more than a century both squares were originally known by the single name Wattle Square and date back to the 1850s, the beginning of urban development in Bendigo. The land was probably set aside by our city’s first District Surveyor Richard Larritt, due to it being in the flood zone of the Bendigo Creek, and it was permanently reserved as a public square in 1872. The photo was taken in 1875 from the top of Wattle Square looking over Bendigo. Note the rocky outcrop in the foreground – this is where the Cathedral now sits. Today, the Squares demonstrate two important aspects of our goldfields history – the importance of open public spaces as a town is established and the development of places of worship in our community. - Dannielle Orr

Buying firewood? Be sure it is legal Illegal firewood cutting is unsustainable, destroys habitat and poses public safety risks. The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) licences commercial firewood suppliers who collect firewood safely, sustainably and legally. Before you purchase firewood, ask whether the seller either has a commercial firewood licence or has otherwise sourced the firewood legally. If they don’t have a licence or refuse to answer, report it to the number below. You can anonymously report suspicious activity, including anyone you see felling or harvesting a tree outside firewood collection areas, to the DEPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186 (quote Operation Trident). www.depi.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186

Down to the finals By JOEL PETERSON
FINALS action gets under way today at the 2014 Australian Snooker Goldfields Open at the Bendigo Stadium. After all first round matches were completed on Wednesday, the quarter finals begin today before Sunday’s final decides who takes the $500,000 in prizemoney. Rob Milkins ended the campaign of four-time world champion John Higgins and was the first to proceed to today’s quarter finals, taking a 5-2 win on Tuesday. Higgins started strongly with a break of 127 in the opening frame, but Milkins reeled off the next four with top runs of 57 and 107 before sealing the win by potting pink and black in frame seven. “I always seem to play well against John, maybe because I know how good he is,” Milkins said. “I can accept it when he’s potting balls, whereas against other players if I’m losing I sometimes get down on myself. If he had won the seventh frame he could have come back at

up to this tournament,” said former UK and Masters champion Stevens. The table was beautiful and the conditions always seem to be good here.” Bendigo is renowned among players for providing top conditions,
First step to Tigers STRATHFIELDSAYE’S Mason Wakefield hopes that his selection in the Victorian 12-and-under schoolboys team will be the first stepping stone to pulling on the jumper of his beloved Richmond Tigers in the future. The Strath Storm winger will travel to Sydney next month to tackle the country’s best players in the 12-and-under age group. The week-long carnival will see Wakefield’s Victorian side play a game every day, and the St Francis of the Fields student can not wait. “I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “Dad is going up with me and we play a game every day so it should be fun.” Wakefield has had a busy year, combining his school and Storm duties
with the felt rolling truly due to the lower humidity in the air compared to locations such as China. Australian Neil Robertson got his campaign under way on Wednesday night after taking out last week’s Wuxi Classic, and was considered by

with various try-outs for the Victorian team and representing the Bendigo Junior Football League in the Goldfields Challenge against Ballarat. The talented 12-yearold, who plays mostly on the wing, says he models his game after another Bendigonian and former 12-and-under best and fairest winner in Joel Selwood, and his fa-
vourite player is former Bendigo Pioneer Dustin Martin. Joshua Bourke, from Melbourne’s Cheltenham East Primary School, will coach the team and already has his players working hard. “It will be good to play against everyone else and see how good they are and how good we are,” Wakefield said.
He is hoping for success in Sydney that could see him play the competition final at Greater Western Sydney’s Spotless Stadium. Wakefield also has his eye on performing for the Storm before finals time this year, but he also dreams of playing for Richmond. “One day I might play for them, that would be pretty cool,” he said.
Braves push the word THE Bendigo Braves will do their bit for mental health awareness next week hosting a special function at Bendigo Stadium for their “Be Brave Speak Up” campaign. The function will feature special guest speaker Sam Cawthorn, whose life changed forever when he was involved in a major car accident and was pronounced dead. Cawthorn was thankfully resuscitated, but left with an amputated right arm and a permanent disability in his right leg. He is also a professional speaking coach having trained professional speakers around the world to get their message heard while being commercially smart. Another guest speaker, Leading from Within program director Patrick O’Connell, will also speak at the function about his experience leading young people. said the stadium was proud to be hosting the event. “All of us who lead people in organisations should have a basic understanding of and compassion for mental health issues,” he said. “Be Brave Speak up is a positive community and business opportunity to gain some insights into demystifying mental health, and how leaders can support people by taking back to their organisation’s worthy information to place in prominent positions for key support”. Lifeline, Suicide Prevention & Awareness Network (SPAN) and Standby are three local organisations who will receive the funds raised at the event. Bendigo Health and Headspace will also be represented at the event, with stalls and material to be distributed. Tickets for the function are $60 and includes canapes, refreshments and entry to the Bendigo vs Ballarat South East Australian Basketball League double-header from 6pm.

A top sport spot By JOEL PETERSON
ABOUT 500 cross-triathletes will flock to Bendigo in December for the 2014 Australian Cross Triathlon Championships and MultiSport Festival. Held at Crusoe Reservoir on December 13 and 14, the championships will be the first of four major state and national championships to take place over the next four years. Cross triathlon features swimming, mountain bike riding and trail running, with the event to feature a 1500m swim, 30km cross-country mountain bike and 10km run. The event will also be treated as a qualifying round for the 2015 ITU World Cross Triathlon Championships. Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said the city looked forward to seeing the series develop over the next four years. “Cross triathlon is rapidly growing in popularity and it is no secret Bendigo residents embrace sport of all kinds,” he said. “Crusoe Reservoir is a perfect setting for this event, with competitors swimming, riding and running amongst some of central Victoria’s most beautiful natural terrain and scenery. “Securing this event is a credit to the City, which has worked hard to develop Crusoe Reservoir as an ideal location for uses such as this and we look forward to welcoming the competitors, supporters and spectators to Bendigo.” Race Director Simon Lazenby said Crusoe Reservoir made Bendigo

a natural choice to host the series. “Discovering Crusoe Reservoir was like discovering a gold nugget in the heart of regional Victoria,” Lazenby said. “It’s as if the venue was purpose built to host an Australian Cross Tri-
athlon Championship, not to mention Bendigo’s close proximity to Melbourne. “The off-road approach of cross triathlon means that off-road is fast becoming the only road for athletes wanting to push themselves to the
limit and it’s fantastic that we have been able to find a site that can cater for the sport.” Triathlon Australia chief executive officer Anne Gripper said the weekend would be a highlight of the year’s calendar.
“We are confident that the event will attract Australia’s best elite cross triathletes and a large field of age group athletes vying for points in the National Cross Triathlon Qualifying Series,” Gripper said.
