T

HERE is a bit going on at my place with the final touches for a nuptial event in the next week or so. Weeding, spraying, mowing, building and lots and lots of planting. It’s a great time to be doing all this as it’s right on cue for all the jobs that need to be done at this time of year, however I have upped the ante, just a bit. Roses, fruit and ornamental trees, berries, asparagus and rhubarb are all still available as bare rooted plants. When planting bare rooted stock, prepare the hole and surrounding area with plenty of good soil. The better the soil the quicker the root growth and the more healthy the plant will be. Look at the size of the root system and dig your hole twice the width and with plenty of depth as well. Make sure the soil is friable, with plenty of compost and nutrient to give the plant a great start. Most but not all of Bendigo is clay based, so soil improvement is essential. Don’t make the hole you are digging smooth as this will make it a dam, rough up the sides and base so water can flow through the walls and base of the hole. There’s no use putting a plant into a tiny hole in compacted clay, as the roots will have nowhere to go. This will result in stunted growth if it survives at all and when there is heavy rain, the hole will fill with water and the roots will rot and the plant may die. Dare I say it, tomato season is fast approaching, you can get seed going now in pots if you have a warm spot to keep them and seedlings can also be grown on in pots until the

weather warms up a bit. Your veggie patch will probably also need a weed, dig over and topup compost now, getting ready for the upcoming planting season. Roses and fruit trees can still be pruned, but don’t leave it too much longer as it’s best to do it while the plant is dormant. If you are doing a hard prune with large cuts, cover the cuts with Steri Prune, this will stop disease from entering the sap stream of your plant. It’s also almost time to spray your peaches, nectarines, apricot and almonds for leaf curl. The timing is crucial, spray just before bud burst, as soon as you see the tiniest bit of colour spray your trees with a copper fungicide. Once the blossoms are out it is too late to spray. Meanwhile my garden awaits for the finishing touches for the big day, with still plenty to do. Happy Gardening!
