AFFODILS and jonquils are already bobbing around in the gentle, early spring breeze. The breeze will gradually freshen, blowing the long-awaited blossom off the fruit trees and giving many of us hay-fever, during the busiest time of the year in the garden. Your veggie patch should be well and truly prepared, with lots of manure, compost, worms and all those goodies that will make your new seedlings grow. If you have followed the column over the past few years you will know I always remind you of frost warnings well into September. So if planting now use products that reduce the plants vulnerability to frost, mulch well around your seedling whether they be flowers or vegetables. So keep them tucked in for a couple more weeks if planting now. There is so much to plant, lots of Asian veggies, lettuce, there must be 10 varieties, carrot, beetroot, baby beet is my favourite, so sweet without the calories.

Peas and beans are child’s play to grow and great for them too, they just won’t make it to the kitchen. There are tons of other veggies too. Herbs of all descriptions will hitting the shops, soon. We’ve been getting a lot of Asian ones in the last couple of years, which seem to growing in popularity, along with your traditional European herbs such as parsley, rosemary, thymes a plenty, chives, onion chives and many more. We’ve also dabbled in hops in late spring, and with about six varieties now available providing a bit of fun for the family – preorder if you want. There will also be a great range of Aussie tucker foods available in three to four weeks, providing no excuses to cover the world with flavours. If you are out of town with limits on water choose plants to suit your environment – as you

should anywhere. Use water saving crystals when planting to capture rain and run off, as well as a seaweed-based product to get them started. Often using seaweed over the foliage of plant will protect from frost and heat damage, but the plant must be continually watered over the leaves for this to work well. Out of my window today there are chooks a clucking or Rosie the spaniel chasing those rascally pigeons, but I can’t see the sky just a black wall and a wind sculpture, you see I am in hospital with a fight for my life ahead. So, my dear friends, gardening friends, friends of the column and all our beautiful customers, I have to sign off for a while until I beat this damn leukaemia monster.
