NEW DAWN By CHRISTINE McGINN
COMMUNITY leaders have welcomed a new dawn for the city, with Bendigo’s first mosque now on the horizon. Greater Bendigo councillors, voted seven-to-two to approve the $3 million proposal on Wednesday night. Bendigo police and security

guards attended the public meeting to maintain safety among the 250-strong gallery. Council was told before the meeting a bus load of anti-Muslim protesters were coming from Melbourne. In the end, a rowdy and, at
■
times, intimidating meeting, saw the East Bendigo plan given the green light. Bendigo Islamic Association committee member Heri Febriyanto said the vote was a new beginning for the Muslim and non-Muslim community.
“We really appreciate council’s decision to approve the permit and we thank the community who have, and are continuing to, support us,” he said. “This is a win for all the community in Bendigo.” The BIA was humbled by coun-
cil’s decision. Mr Febriyanto said they needed to source adequate funding before the mosque could be built. “We are going through this process gradually and we don’t have a certain timeframe for building,” he said.

BendigoWeekly Council backs mosque plan
By CHRISTINE McGINN
BENDIGO has secured its position onto the motoring map as Australia’s “Vee-Dub” capital and a monument to mark the title. Greater Bendigo councillors approved a vintage red 1974 Volkswagen Beetle to be erected on a 1.5 metre pole above Oasis Car Spa at Wednesday night’s meeting. OCS owner and VW lover Andrew Brose will restore the vehicle to its former glory before placing the vehicle above his Strathdale business. “The car is core to our business. We want people to come and see the car and we want to bring a tourism VW monument to Bendigo,” he told the Bendigo Weekly in January. Mr Brose said the monument would attract tourists to the city and highlight our record of most VWs per capita in Australia. “The car will create a bit of an icon for the community. It will add an attraction to Bendigo but at no cost to council,” he said.

The monument and associated costs are expected to be $3200. Councillor Peter Cox only had five words for the monument. “Bendigo, Volkswagen capital of Australia,” he said. Cr Elise Chapman said it was “pretty cool” although it would not attract tourists to the city it
would be an attraction to Bendigo. But councillor Helen Leach said it was an advertising sign not a tourist monument. Cr Rod Fyffe said it was a creative idea and approved the plan. “The best way to see a VW is on a pole and not anywhere else,” he said.
The Volkswagen’s significance to Bendigo will be printed on an information board at ground level. The board will also give details about the car, the local Volksclub Bendigo and major event’s held in the city.

Wicked is the untold story of the Wizard of Oz, and takes the story to a time before the classic movie is set. It tells the tale of two unlikely friends and how they became the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good. Ali and Ryan were able to pass on some tales from the
stage to the students. Headmaster, Matthew Maruff said it was a wonderful experience for the students to have actors from such a renowned theatre production come up and give them a taste of what goes on behind the scenes. “The students particularly
enjoyed taking an active part in a piece of choreography from the actual production,” Mr Maruff said. “They got to see how physically demanding and fast paced working on a musical this size can be but thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with Ali and Ryan.”

Waste water solution may take months By ANTHONY RADFORD
A SOLUTION to top toxic water bubbling to the surface across Bendigo may take up to a year. The Bendigo Weekly revealed last week the Bendigo Trust was under financial pressure as it was footing the short-term plan bill. When Unity Mining stopped operating from its Kangaroo Flat mine in 2012, toxic groundwater it previously pumped out began rising in the city’s abandoned mine shafts. With the Central Deborah Mine the deepest accessible point of the water, the Trust, which operates the mine, as well as the city’s Talking Trams, the Joss House and the Discovery Centre, was forced to act. A State Government grant of $300,000 enabled it to buy the pumps, but it costs them more than $100,000 a year to run them. The past 12 months have seen a doubling of the amount of water needing to be pumped, doubling the costs. If the water is not pumped, and the Trust decides to walk away from the underground section of the mine, the water will start bubbling up all around Bendigo. The water has high levels of arsenic and salt in it, as well as sulphur and metals such as manganese. It cannot be used for drinking, recreation or agriculture and is not allowed to mix with surface water. At the moment the water is pumped into the Garden Gully Mine shafts and into Unity Mining’s Woodvale settling ponds. A spokesperson for Water Minster Peter Walsh said a government panel was looking for solutions. “Planning to manage short term-issues has commenced and will be completed by September 2014,” she said. “A long-term solution will be developed to provide confidence to the Bendigo community into the future by June 2015.” The Water and Energy and Resources departments are working on the solution together.

Weragoda speaks out
GREATER Bendigo councillor Mark Weragoda said he was racially abused for his decision to support the city’s first mosque. Cr Weragoda has received constant threats, a flood of antiMuslim correspondence and had black balloons hung on his property twice. “It hit home at Wednesday night’s meeting, suddenly I felt these people were being racial,” he said. “It is typical of a such a minority group to play Islamic chant music when I started to speak (because of his darker skin colour). “If these people are not racial and anti-Muslim what are they?” Cr Weragoda was saddened by the lack of respect shown to council staff at Wednesday night’s meeting. “If people don’t have respect to abide by council meeting regulations, or to the mayor or the councillors, where do they stand?” he said.
Plans for mosque move on
“It is childish behaviour. “I certainly won’t be stooping down to their level and won’t drown out voices of community leaders.” Cr Weragoda said the attacks were “a little bit daunting” and both his facebook and twitter accounts had been hit. “There are some nasty tweets. We need to have respect for each other. If we lack that, where do we go?” he said. “The vast majority of people
Fifty reasons to attend FROM the full monty to toe-in-the-water, Bendigo Writers Festival this year is catering for every need across the August 8 to 10 weekend. Today’s program, published in the Bendigo Weekly, includes information about more than 50 sessions, from evening interviews with two of Australia’s most revered authors, Blanche d’Alpuget and Les Murray, to local writers celebrating their first books. As well as the popular day passes, which provide entry into any session in four different venues, festival organisers have added a top-of the-range Premium Pass, which gives access to sessions on both days, plus both evening events. There is also the new Taster Pass, a two-session ticket designed for people who might only want to go to hear one author speak, or to listen to one or two discussions. Weekly general manager Peter Kennedy said today’s program publication is another milestone in the development of the city’s cultural calendar. “The Bendigo Weekly is proud to have been associated with the Bendigo Writers Festival for the past three years, and welcomes everyone to this year’s festival with a great sense of pride,” he said. “The shared commitment of the major partners to deliver an event as accomplished and polished as the BWF continues to drive the event to new heights each year.” Mr Kennedy said the festival is part of the city’s growing sophistication. “The Bendigo Writers Festival is an event that harnesses our cultural passion and each year something new emerges, while everything around it continues to grow,” he said. “Featuring a rich diversity of presenters and speakers that includes some of Australia’s greatest literary talents as well as some equally enthralling up and coming authors and personalities, this year’s program promises something for everyone and anyone with a palette for writing, for the arts, or for Bendigo.” Bendigo Publishing will also release a new novel by Weekly journalist Dianne Dempsey during the festival. “This is the second year we have supported local writing by publishing a novel to coincide with Bendigo Writers Festival,” Mr Kennedy said. “Last year’s novel, A Vintage Death by Colin King, was warmly received, and it’s become a favourite in the Bendigo library. “We think this new novel will surprise and delight many Bendigo readers.” The Bendigo Weekly is a major sponsor of the Bendigo Writers Festival.
I certainly won’t be stooping down to their level are positive and support multiculturalism. But it is a minority group that aren’t supportive.” Cr Weragoda said the seven councillors who voted for the mosque’s approval last night were strong leaders. “We have seven councillors

From Page 1 “We just currently have the masterplan. The most important thing to build is the prayer hall and the basic infrastructure first. “The second stage would include building the caretaker’s residence and the third stage would be the hall and other facilities. “We don’t know exactly when it will be built. It depends on our funding.” Cr Peter Cox took the first leap of faith to support the mosque. “Bendigo will benefit from the diverse interaction from people coming from a wide range of cultural backgrounds,” he said. “I acknowledge it will be a challenge to fully implement all the conditions. But that is no reason to reject the application but rather gives a process that if conditions are not adhered to, the full force of planning reformations will be implemented.” Mayor Barry Lyons said the mosque was approved on planning grounds. “There are many conditions on the permit to make sure the impact on neighbours is acceptable,” he said. “Now a decision has been made, the applicants can move
forward with the next stage in the development process.” Cr Lisa Ruffell said it was an important vote and a great development for Bendigo. “The vote was about a planning application. In all cases, they, and council, followed due process. I believe in the report,” she said. Cr Rod Fyffe said councillors had voted on planning grounds and for the city’s future. “We also need to remember that we live in this community. There are a lot of us who want to ensure this community continues to thrive and I support the mosque,” he said. Cr Leach said she did not have issues with Islam but over council’s handling of the application.

Greater Bendigo
Working together to be Australia’s most liveable city Council this week adopted a bold new vision for Greater Bendigo. The updated Council Plan has been framed around the vision: Greater Bendigo – working together to be Australia’s most liveable regional city. The vision is backed by a series of indicators that will enable the City to measure its liveability status against other regional centres in Australia. Mayor Cr Barry Lyons said the vision is ambitious but achievable. “Council firmly believes that we can make life better for our residents by centring our decision making on becoming the most liveable regional city,” Cr Lyons said. “The vision recognises that it will take a team effort – involving Council, the community and other levels of government – for Greater Bendigo to achieve this outcome.”
community consultation and engagement
Actions include:
• Increasing diversion of domestic waste to resource recovery
Director of Planning and Development Prue Mansfield said the updated Council Plan was adopted following a lengthy period of public consultation, with community input being sought throughout the drafting and adoption process.
• Lobby Federal and State Government for required infrastructure, key projects and services to be in place as our community grows, including advancement of the Marong Business Park and construction of the new runway and Business Park at Bendigo Airport
“The plan includes a series of actions to be undertaken over the next 12 months to ensure strategic objectives, and ultimately the Council’s contribution to the liveability indicators, can be achieved,” Ms Mansfield said.
• Complete the Hospital Precinct Structure Plan and the Rosalind Park Precinct Plan and commence implementation of agreed priorities
• Increasing the proportion of people aged 17 years attending school or vocational training
• Continue to progress cycle and walking path links and footpaths to commercial centres, recreation facilities and schools, with a focus on underserviced areas
It is easy for any regional centre to make claims about liveability so the City has developed a number of key indicators that can be measured over time, including:
• In partnership with community organisations, schools and workplaces, promote and increase physical activity among residents
• Increasing the percentage of the population who walk or cycle five times a week for at least 30 minutes • Increasing the proportion of houses within a 10 minute walk of a park or open space
• Actively seek opportunities to encourage and support artistic/creative endeavours
• Increasing child immunisation rates to be better than the State average
• Adopt and commence implementation of the revised Domestic Wastewater Management Strategy • Develop a Rural Communities www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/ Strategy councilplan • Facilitate better links between students, education and employer needs, including support for tertiary providers to expand their offerings in identified local priority employment
• Complete the Integrated Transport and Land Use Plan
www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/ councilplan
and increase community participation through the delivery of an annual program of creative initiatives
• Develop a Master Plan for Eaglehawk Landfill which encompasses its closure as an operating landfill in 2019, rehabilitation and conversion to a resource recovery and transfer operation • Work with public land managers landcare and other environmental groups to protect local ecology, landscape values and manage invasive plants and animals
• Decreasing recorded offences of crimes against the person • Increasing the percentage of the workforce who have completed a Bachelor’s Degree or higher • Increasing community satisfaction ratings for

News in brief Free wi-fi for central bendigo
The Victorian Government’s preference is to have the service running as soon as possible, preferably this year. A preferred Wi-Fi provider is expected to be announced within weeks.
Junortoun says thanks for play space
We know that it will be well used”. Mayor Cr Barry Lyons thanked the signatories for their kind words and said he hoped children in the area enjoyed their new play area, the design of which was inspired by Swift Parrots, Lorikeets and local flora.
Free school holiday fun
The City is presenting two free Stop Motion Animation workshops for young people with a focus on Lego and clay-mation.
Council will allow the State Government to have access to City-owned infrastructure including light poles and public buildings to enable the rapid roll out of free Wi-Fi in central Bendigo. Free Wi-Fi is a welcome initiative and will boost central Bendigo’s overall appeal by providing enhanced educational, entrepreneurial and tourism opportunities for students, visitors and businesses. The proposed service will be designed for outdoor spaces only and will not replace indoor services currently supplied to residential and commercial premises by Internet Service Providers or existing free indoor Wi-Fi hotspot services.

Haven merger increases service reach
FIRST STEPS: Transport and Roads Minister Terry Mulder at the site of the new Epsom Railway station. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN
Epsom back on rail map By CHRISTINE McGINN
THE multi-million dollar Epsom train station is on track with construction works officially underway this week. Transport Minister Terry Mulder visited Bendigo to inspect the shovel-ready site and said it was “moving ahead”. “This is a great project. Any city that is building new railway stations is a city on the move and this says a lot about what is happening here in Bendigo,” he said. “There will be four railway stations in Bendigo and this says it is a big city. “It will be the first time in 40 years that the Epsom com-
munity will be serviced by trains. This is a growing community and the people who live here will really benefit from the fact that they have a railway station at their doorstop.”
quired to add these services. “We will ask Public Transport Victoria to do some additional work to see how we can improve these services but this is phase one.” The station will feature a
Any city that is building new railway stations is a city on the move There will only be 28 trains each week, approximately four trains a day running from the new station. Mr Mulder said the service would be increased pending the patronage demand and complex signalling will be re-
160 metre platform, canopies, bus drop off places, bicycle hoops, 100 car spaces with drop off and pick up bays. Mr Mulder said they would continue to improve the system and invest in the line to ensure train punctuality.
The State Government has spent $7.76 million to fund the Epsom station and additional works at Eaglehawk train station. Eaglehawk train commuters will be given one extra early morning train service to Southern Cross Station. Mr Mulder visited the site in August last year to showcase the preliminary designs. Ducon Construction won the tender and have been working on site since the start of the week. The train timetables are yet to be finalised and works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
BENDIGO homeless organisation Haven; Home, Safe has struck a merger deal with Preston-based housing provider North East Housing Services. The merger will enable Haven to deliver more services to more people in need across more locations, including large parts of metropolitan Melbourne. Haven chief executive officer Ken Marchingo said the merger was expected to take effect from July 1, following regulatory sign off. The merged entity, which will trade under the Haven banner, will employ more than 150 staff across six offices, manage more than 1600 long-term and transitional properties and have combined assets worth $275 million Bendigo will remain as the agency’s head office. “Normally regional services are merged into larger state-wide or metro-based services. It is rare for a regionally based service, such as ours, to move into the capital city in such a manner,” Mr Marchingo said. “I am also particularly thrilled to announce that we have retained the services of the entire NEHS team without any loss of staff.” NEHS’ current chief executive officer, Haleh Homaei, will manage the agency’s metropolitan operations and join the Haven executive management team as deputy CEO. Widely acknowledged as Australia’s only integrated affordable housing and full-service homelessness services provider, Mr Marchingo said the merger would enable the agency to position itself to deliver better, more efficient and effective services for disadvantaged and displaced Victorians across a wider region from Melbourne to Mildura. “This merger is a significant and strategic move and I am very keen to see how we can drive further initiatives into the future and increase our capacity to meet the needs of our clients,” he said. Productivity and efficiency gains from the integration of the two services should improve access to support workers and tenancy managers, increase response times for maintenance, and broaden the choice of housing options. It is also envisaged the merged entity will have greater development and construction capacity and be more successful in competing for government, private and philanthropic capital. “The merger is also very timely with the Department of Human Services rolling out its new service model, Services Connect,” Mr Marchingo said.

The sadness remains “ANNE” who was born in 1947, used to sleep on the drafty verandah, that was considered so good for everyone’s health. “I remember that verandah, I used to sleep there until I was 17 and a half,” Anne said. “As soon as I saw the pictures I started shaking. I still have nightmares. “I remember terrible times there. One day I was supposed to take a sick boy some junket to eat, I was 13, and I ate the junket myself. “For my punishment I was dragged out of bed and taken to the boys’ dormitory where I had to kneel all night in my nightie and pray. If I bent over or fell asleep, I was beaten with a strap by a nun who sat in her chair all night and waited for me to fall over. “In the morning I had welts all over my body. “The children who had no one to watch over got all the dirty work. Me, I got a belting from the nuns all the time. I was one of four children and mum didn’t know where we all were. “I remember that if a child ran away they would be caught and brought back. They would be made to stand in front of everybody and their heads would be shaved. We were made to laugh at them. “I remember being on my
knees all the time at a very young age scrubbing floors. My bones have been permanently affected from working so young. “I remember standing around naked waiting for a bath. I remember standing in my undies while a nun, with one of the older women, fitted me for a bra. “One of my more eerie memories was when an old nun died. We had to file past and kiss the nun’s face, it terrified me, I didn’t want to do it. “I’ve never really spoken about this before but we were ill-equipped for the world. “When I was 18 I had a baby which was adopted. They wouldn’t even tell me what I had. Many other girls would have been just like me. My first husband was violent. It was hard growing up. “I think it is terrific that these stories have come out. Someone has to be responsible.” “SARAH” is another lady for whom the series has brought back bad memories. Now 69, Sarah remembers being taken in the night and put in the back of a ute and driven to the orphanage. She had no idea where she was going. Sarah is sad that she can barely read and write.
TIMES PAST Three happy smiles belie a sad history “Sarah” and her sisters ”I was never taught properly. If you couldn’t learn, they didn’t want to know you,” she said. “Because I struggled with my work I had to stay out of the classroom and polish the shoes and do other jobs. “I wanted to learn but they wouldn’t let me. I used to try and teach myself but it was no good. “I went to work when I was 13 and a half. “My first husband was cruel and used to bash me. “I had so many bad experiences I blocked a lot of them
out. I remember lying in the dormitory at the orphanage of a night and looking at the picture of Jesus Christ with the Crown of Thorns on his head. “Those sad eyes. “I used to stare at him all the time and try to get some comfort from him and pray to him. That’s how I got through. “It hasn’t been easy. I’ve still got a lot of sadness inside me.” Next week we follow the story of the Maryfields women and what happened to several after they left St Aidans.

REUNION: Francine Callanan, Beryl Monigatti, grandaughter Katie Monigatti, her daughter, Laylah, 5 months, and Mikaela Monigatti
Ph 5446 8206

A childhood regained by chance ONCE upon a time, in the early 1970s, Francine was a resident of St Aidan’s Orphanage. She wasn’t very happy there but she used to spend her school holidays with Beryl and Jim Monigatti and their family on their Rochester farm. Beryl’s children, Michael and Bernadette, were around the same age and loved having Francince staying with them. But Francine always felt sad when it was time to return to the orphanage. “She was a tiny little thing and had red hair. I remember when we took her back to the orphanage she would sit in the back seat of the car and cry,” Beryl said. “‘Please don’t take me back, I don’t want to go,’” she would say. “It would break my heart. “We wanted to adopt her but the nuns said she was moving back with her family,” Beryl said. “I asked them to tell me if she was returned to the orphanage.” In fact, after the relationship with her family broke down, Francine was
indeed returned to the orphanage. Unfortunately, the sisters didn’t tell the Rochester family of Francine’s return and rather than grow up on a farm she stayed in the orphanage. But Francine was never forgotten. Over the years the Monigatti family kept on thinking about her and kept looking for her. One time Beryl was
while Francine was working there. “It was a lovely reunion. We cried and hugged. We sat and talked for about three hours, we will never lose her again. I can die happy now. I won’t die wondering what happened to her. She is with us now. She’s beautiful, she’s done so well.” Francine rang the Weekly a week ago to tell us this
Please don’t take me back, I don’t want to go told that Francine was working at Lansell’s Plaza. “I rushed out there only to be told that she had just left,” Beryl said. “But then two weeks ago I read the Weekly and saw Francine’s photo. I couldn’t believe it. I cried and cried. We contacted Francine by phone and it turned out that she lived around the corner from me in California Gully. What is more my grandchildren were at Weeroona College
extraordinary story.” “Something wonderful has happened,” Francine said. “I have found a wonderful woman who used to look after me during schools holidays for more than four years. I have a whole new family; Beryl, her husband, their children, and grandchildren Katie and Mikaela and I even have a grand niece Laylah who is five months. It has been so exciting
for me. I have been going around feeling warm and fuzzy.” Such is the nature of a childhood spent in an institution, Francine has blocked out large parts of it. “But now I have my childhood back,” she said. “I can remember staying on the farm and being chased by a chook which had a go at me. We ate it for tea that night and I thought the chook was being punished.” While Francine has some blanks in her memory, Beryl is now filling them in for her. Obviously it has been an emotional time for Francine but she said that during the years of struggle she helped and loved by friends, such as Meryl Hayes. “It hasn’t been easy talking about my time at St Aidan’s but look what I have gained, this wonderful family. LEARNER drivers are calling on businesses and community members to help them get back on the road. The Salvation Army L2P Program does not have their own vehicle to service the increasing demand of local youth to obtain their driving licence. The previous vehicle was written-off in an accident earlier this year, leaving learner-drivers and mentors without a vehicle. The organisation is currently using a loan vehicle until it is able to secure the funds for two cars. Local businesses, car
dealers and the community are urged to support the program with donations to get it back up and running. Bendigo’s L2P project co-ordinator Denise Sibenaler said there were about 50 local youth currently enrolled in the program. “We have kids on the waiting list and more ringing up every day,” she said. “There is a huge demand and it’s more than we can provide.” Youth enrolled in the program often face social and economic barriers to achieving their drivers licence.
Ms Sibenaler said there was a lack of supervising drivers to teach youth to drive, especially in refugee communities or among youth living independently. The L2P program is in desperate need of two small, late model vehicles to teach youth to drive and learn about safe road use. Ms Sibenaler said they needed vehicles with a minimum of a four-star ANCAP rating for the program. Anyone able to support the program or for more information, contact Ms Sibenaler on 5440 8450.

POLICE are on the hunt to remove all illegal firearms from our streets. The Australasian Operation Unification targets the criminal use of firearms. Bendigo Police Acting Inspector Troy Hargadon said the operation was targeted at the removal of illegal weapons from communities and promoted public safety. “Firearms are an issue across the state,” he said. “We have a lot of rural areas in Bendigo where there have been a number of people suspected theft of firearms in recent times. These guns must have gone into the hands of illegal activity. “We are calling on the community to help us identify who they are and where the firearms are located.” But Act Insp Hargadon said there was a large sector of the community who used firearms correctly. “The focus is on reducing illegal firearms on the streets that are stolen, adapted, modified or in criminal hands,” he said. “Each gun has the potential to kill and they are a menace in the community. It is time to take them out of the hands of criminals.” The co-ordinated state operation will run until June 29. Locals with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A BENDIGO female pedestrian died after an accident on Williamson Street in Bendigo about noon on Tuesday. The 64-year old woman was crossing the road when a grey car pulled out of a parking space in the middle of the road. The Bendigo driver was turning right when the Commodore sedan hit the woman at a low speed. The accident occurred near the The Good Guys store and two ambulances attended the incident. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said they took the woman to the Bendigo hospital in a critical condition. Police interviewed the driver and are preparing a report for the coroner. Sergeant Geoff Annand reminded all road users, drivers and pedestrians, to be aware of surrounds.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, June 20, 2014 PLAYTIME: Jason, Denise and Glenn Twitt with the Mulligrub’s team.
Flood risk highlighted STRATHFIELDSAYE and Junortoun residents are urged to deepen their knowledge through the final flood study community information sessions next week. The study shows the extent and level of floodwaters across urban areas in Bendigo with a range of possible flooding incidents. The Bendigo Creek catchment from Kangaroo Flat to Huntly including the outlying suburbs of Maiden Gully, Strathfieldsaye and Junortoun are the focus of the study. North Central Catchment Management Authority chief executive office Damian Wells said it was important the community was informed about the flood study. “The study is all about the wellbeing of the Bendigo community, so teaming a consultation program with the thorough technical work in the study has been crucial,” he said. “The feedback we’ve received will assist the North Central CMA, council and emergency services to prepare for and respond to flooding in our city.” The North Central CMAand Greater Bendigo council appointed Water Technology specialist hydrologic consultants to undertake the study back in 2011. Staged community consultation sessions have been running over six months with the final two sessions on June 23 and 25. The sessions will run, each day, between 2pm to 7pm at the Strathfieldsaye Sports Club on Club Court. Residents can talk with North Central CMA and council staff to discuss the study. Strathfieldsaye and Junortoun residents who have received a letter about the sessions and are attending should RSVP on 1800 282 944.

Centre of attraction A PLAY centre with a difference opened on Wednesday – welcome to Mulligrub’s. The centre is the brainchild of Glenn and Denise Twitt, who saw a need for something new. “We have grandchildren, and we saw a gap in the market for this type of centre in Bendigo,” Mrs Twitt said. “Glenn and I travelled to America and
went to an amazing trade show in Orlando. “We now have a very exciting play centre, some of the items are the only ones in Australia.” There is plenty of interest in the group, with more than 2900 people already “liking” the group on facebook. “That’s quite frightening really, how popular it is,” she said.
“There’s obviously a need for it.” Mr Twitt said a lot of work has gone into the centre over the past couple of years. “It is really impressive, but then we have spent $2.6million on it,” he said. “I hope the people of Bendigo come and spend some time here.” Mulligrub’s is at 17 Victa Road in East Bendigo.

LOCALS will have their say on the future of Bendigo’s transport and land use in a community workshop next week. The Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy aims to connect locals and answer their questions about the city’s future. Residents are asked to attend Bendigo Town Hall on June 26 at 7pm to piece together the city’s transport puzzle. Council Planning and Development director Prue Mansfield said it was important to retain residents’
value while balancing the region’s growth. “Residents have offered up hundreds of ideas on how we can move around and use our roads and available land differently,” she said. “The community workshop is an opportunity to refine these ideas and explore solutions that you think will work best, and raise any issues that may have been missed.” Residents said they did not want large roads “carving through our suburbs” following the 2011 Road
Transport Strategy. “We’re trying to find out what alternatives residents would support and what sort of behaviour change they are willing to make,” she said. “In the future, Greater Bendigo will be at the forefront of regional living but it is important the city has a transport system that can keep pace with growth.” Locals unable to attend the meeting can join the conversation online at www. facebook.com/CityofGreaterBendigo or www.twitter.com/ Greater_Bendigo

It’s time to think outside the square A BENDIGO group is hosting a gathering for local people who “think a little differently to create positive change”. Outside the Square is holding the event at the Old Church on the Hill, Quarry Hill on Thursday, June 26. “Locals in our own community really can make a difference to our day to day health,” Outside the Square facilitator Karen Corr said. “We can be inspired by everyday people who are making better health pos-
sible for our communities. “This month’s Outside the Square is all about finding out about these initiatives and being inspired to get involved or start up our own initiatives.” Ms Corr said healthy solutions can be as simple as voicing a need for safe road crossings to encourage more children to walk to school. LA TROBE University’s Dentistry and Oral hHalth students will practise their skills in a new and controlled teaching environment. Eight new dental chairs and state-of-the-art audio visual equipment will allow students a smooth transition from clinical simulation to working on real patients. La Trobe University head of Dentistry and Oral Health Mark Gussy said the eight-chair dental laboratory clinic was crucial to
students’ learning. “The students will move from the simulation environment, where they work on mannequins with plastic teeth onto real patients who have feelings and expectations and pain sensors. It is an exciting but also scary transition for students to make,” he said. “We have always done that, but we have had to use Bendigo Health which displaces patient care. This way we are able to increase patient care at Bendigo Health and still give the students the introduction they need.

“We have a facility on campus where we are able to safely introduce students to clinical practice within a functioning, live mouth before they have to go into a clinic and be faced with the additional pressures. “We have one of the best dental simulation and clinical facilities in Australia.” The school will be able to increase its first-year student intake by 10 per cent. Professor Gussy said the audio visual capabilities were “cutting edge”. Adjunct Professor Peter Wilson designed the space
to replicate a professional working environment. “This facility was being nudged at for a long time, about three or four years, to finally get the go-ahead. It was prompted by the extravagant offers of La Trobe to attract dental students... and increase the size,” he said. “This is the first time La Trobe has put capital expenditure into a dental project.” La Trobe contributed $900,000 towards the project with additional funds from Dental Health Services Victoria.

Open letter to councillors Cox, Williams, Ruffell, Weragoda, Campbell, Fyffe and Lyons, I am writing to you all, having attended Wednesday’s shocking council meeting at which the Bendigo mosque proposal was debated and eventually approved by yourselves, in what I believe amounts to a triumph of rational and considered civility over extraordinarily vicious and abusive ignorance and intolerance. I’ve never attended a council meeting before – might be too scared (scarred?) to ever turn up again. I commend each of you on your obvious commitment to the true australian ideals of social and religious plurality, cultural diversity, multicultural enrichment, human rights and equality, open-mindedness and respectful tolerance. also your measured and rational perseverance in the face of such overwhelming and frightening mob-mentality. as the author of a submission in favour of the proposed mosque and a proud Bendigonian, I am traumatised by and ashamed of the ugly bigotry and thinly-veiled racism which was on display. I know that many people whose views and values align with mine (some with obvious non-European heritage, some of my medical colleagues of muslim faith) felt that they simply could not risk subjecting themselves to the hateful spectacle which the public gallery turned out to be, and did not feel able to attend. It is ironically telling and appalling that anyone in that public gallery who may have wished to speak favourably of the proposal could not. In this context, I wish to thank and congratulate each of you on your courage and persistence in the face of extreme intimidation, disruption and vilification. Please also pass on my appreciation and commendations to the council staff, particularly Prue mansfield, who was especially singled out for outrageous abuse and insult. Thankyou, and may you stay strong in the face of any ongoing adversity. Michelle Goldsmith, Whipstick Ward
Threat or opportunity? Why should the rising level of groundwater under Bendigo pose a problem for the city? It only needs a change in thinking to consider the old underground mine workings as “the new reservoir for Bendigo”.
Rather than a threat, the water should be considered as an opportunity to provide the growing city population with another source of raw water. a further opportunity exists to utilise this vast underground storage capacity to provide temporary storage for excess water runoff during storms which would in effect dilute the concentration of contaminants. Pipe the contaminated water to the Epsom treatment plant via the sewer system, carry out the initial purification treatment at the existing plant. Then pump the recycled product to Spring Gully Reservoir to distribute it to the recycled network or use it to augment supply to the Sandhurst Treatment Plant where it can be further purified to supply the growing domestic needs of the population. Recycled water is used for domestic purposes throughout the rest of the world, why not in the driest continent in the world? This scenario would transfer the cost of pumping to all water users on the Bendigo domestic network and let the tourism body get on with what they do well. We have the ways and means of doing this here but do we have the willpower? Trevor Phillips, Strathdale
Our budget, OMG IT is great to hear that councillor Peter Cox is in favour of keeping the rate increase down to around four per cent rather than six per cent. If I recall correctly, most of the councillors supported this innovative and revolutionary concept at the last council elections. however, once elected, this was all put in the “too hard basket”. Ratepayers that sought to remind these councillors of their promises, were labelled “the carping minority”. Now, according to Cr Cox, we find that one of the reasons this mob blows the budget is that they can’t keep the numbers of employees to a level that we can afford. add to this the wacko idea to spend $15million, of which $5million would come from rates, to enhance the airport for an airline that decided to pull the pin due to lack of passengers. Now we know that, as per usual council knows best, but to spend $180 on an airfare to melbourne with a total time saving of 15 to 20 minutes, is most likely a luxury that would have a limiting effect on passenger numbers. When you look at just the two items above, Cr Cox and cohorts

The following statement at studyassist.gov.au on a page entitled: Budget 2014 – Student Overview would have allayed the “fair-go” fears she lists in her letter: “Students who were enrolled in, or had accepted, a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) on or before may 13, 2014 will continue to be charged under existing arrangements until they finish their study or until the December 31, 2020 (whichever comes first). This covers people currently enrolled in undergraduate courses and non-research postgraduate courses.” ms Goldsmith said: “I am studying to be a clinical psychologist which takes seven years – I do not want to think of what my total debt will be if this budget is approved.” The answer is simple ms Goldsmith; your future “total debt” will be the same as it would have been prior to the 2014 budget. Taxpayers will pay most of the cost of your course, but you will be required to make a contribution. you are also granted the privilege of a loan (hELP), to cover your contribution, which you do not have to repay until your gross wage exceeds more than $50,000. DON'S CARPET, TILE AND GROUT CLEANING
Beating intolerance IT was a summery December night in 2006. The daylight savings light was streaming through the closed blinds of the Bendigo Town Hall. Inside, hundreds of angry protestors sat, holding their placards and waiting for Greater Bendigo councillors to take their seats. It had been a tough fight. A lot of words, most of them angry, had been spoken, if not yelled. A decision was made, a decision those in the gallery did not like. About a month later, more than 1000 people attended a rally in the Civic Gardens next door, protesting that decision. Despite the anger, the councillors were right. They voted, albeit belatedly, to

only reason for the 2008 landslide, but it played a major part. Fast forward more than seven years and here we are again. In the same room, with only one surviving councillor (although Cr Lisa Ruffell was there in her role as Epsom-protest leader) and with a handful of the same senior staff, the scene was again repeated. Like Epsom, the attacks were personal and nasty. It wasn’t a pleasant night. However, all who were there in 2006 were arguing along planning and strategy lines. There were about 550 objections to the Epsom supermarket plan, and so far there are about 400 against the mosque. There was shouting back in 2006, but not shouting down. There were a few uncalled-for remarks, and it was heated, but nothing like the hate that was in the Town Hall reception room on Wednesday night. All of the Epsom protestors were local, at least from the City of Greater Bendigo. The same could not be said for last night’s mob. Make no mistake about it, it was a mob.

approve the new Epsom supermarket complex. Today it is a Woolworths, and is quickly growing into a community hub. The site used to be home to the Epsom Soccer Club. It’s run-down facilities were a disgrace. The trade off for them was the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. Anyone who has been there, or even driven past, in the past five or six years can’t help but admire what a great asset the facility is. Those councillors made a gutsy decision, one that was in the best interests of Bendigo. They refused to go down the path of backing down to the mob, like their predecessors had done with the plan to extend the tram around Lake Weeroona. As politicians, it is easy to be popular. It is difficult to take a decision that will benefit the city long term, when a loud group are only interested in screaming you down. It is also politically brave. After the Epsom supermarket decision, five of the eight councillors who stood for re-election were voted out. The Epsom vote was not the
They tried to yell down councillors, showed little respect for process, and had simply not done their research. Anyone who has been to a council meeting in the past decade knows questions from the floor are not allowed to be asked about a planning item on that agenda. Anyone who has objected to anything knows there is a planing scheme and if you are not prepared to come up with any planning points that would see the project fall foul of the Local Government Act, there is little chance. All the passion, shouting and, at times, bigotry, cannot win an argument, especially a planning one. Like the councillors in 2006, this bunch on Wednesday night got it right. They made the right decision for Bendigo now, and in the future. Anyone who thinks Sharia Law has a chance of being established in Bendigo, let alone Australia, is arguing solely on ignorance. Yes, the Koran has some ugly elements. So does the bible. Read Leviticus or Exodus if you want to make Christianity look bad and irrelevant. This time around, the Greater Bendigo council made a brave decision. Among the spite, the death threats (including some here), the intimidation and the hatred, council acted reasonably, calmly and with the future of the city foremost in their minds. They should be congratulated. In the words of Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan, seven councillors stared down intolerance to make Bendigo stronger.

Obituary Dr ralph Winter birrell. BenDiGo lost a great educator, researcher and involved community member with the death of ralph Birrell. Dr Birrell was born at St Arnaud on March 20, 1927. he was educated at the St Arnaud state and high schools and went to Windsor State School to become a trainee primary teacher. After only four months in 1945 he was appointed to be head teacher of a 15-pupil school at Turiff. With a studentship, Dr Birrell attended the Melbourne Teachers College, completing his Primary Teachers Certificate. he received an extension scholarship to study at Melbourne University, for a science degree. At university he was heavily involved in sport and student affairs. An appointment to Kyneton high School followed, where he taught mathematics and physics to matriculation level. in 1952 he resigned from the education Department to re-enrol at the university this time for a degree in electrical engineering. During semester breaks he worked at Commonwealth Fertilisers and Chemicals to help fund his studies. During a summer semester break he was employed at Mt isa Mines as an electrician’s offsider, working seven days a week to maximise his sav-
ings. he also tutored in english to migrants part time during the academic year, which is how he met Marta, who he married in January, 1955. Following a brief honeymoon in Adelaide, the couple went by rail to Broken hill so Dr Birrell could start as a junior engineer at Zinc Corporation/new Broken hill Consolidated. By 1957 he was in charge of electrical construction and maintenance as well as the winding engines. By this time the couple had their first daughter, olga. Late in 1958 Dr Birrell was appointed as head of the electric engineering department at the Bendigo School of Mines/Bendigo Technical College. As a dedicated and competent lecturer he had the rare gift of explaining very complex problems in an understandable way. Upon the retirement of principal Ted Thompson, Dr Birrell was appointed to lead the college in a period of unprecedented growth. Coupled with the appointment Dr Birrell was quick to promote the college’s move to Flora hill. The first computer was installed in 1968, this was a mammoth piece of equipment and a first for Bendigo. The first degree courses were introduced, metallurgy, ceramics, followed by chemistry, civil engineering, arts and business. This was the golden age of the Bendigo institute of Technology. Dr Birrell always had an open door, in his administration, valued the role of

There was plenty of celebrating at the Bethlehem home for the Aged in Golden Square for Arthur and Maree Knight’s Diamond wedding anniversary recently. More than three dozen family and friends including great grandchildren were present for the celebrations which included the reading of the congratulatory telegrams from the Queen and Prime Minister. The world’s moved on since May 29, 1954 when the young couple took their marriage vows in the picturesque Pyalong church but the love still remains from
less complicated times. “having plenty of patience is the secret to maintaining a happy marriage,” Maree Knight told the Weekly. She first meet Arthur when he was shearing sheep at her father’s Pyalong property. “They weren’t much good either, not much wool as they were first cross merinos,” Arthur said with a dry smile. Together they raised two sons Maurice and Tony at Tooborac before moving to Bendigo in the mid 1970s after the Defence Department acquired their property.

Festival time for Write on the Fringe
A
NEW festival called Write on the Fringe will take place on August 7 to 9 in the new Bendigo Library and coincides with the hugely successful 2014 Bendigo Writers Festival. Write on the Fringe, an initiative of Greater Bendigo’s council’s Capital Community Connect, has been designed for the community to connect with emerging artists, authors and writers. Festival co-ordinator Maree Tonkin said the Write on the Fringe festival is a place where arts, business and community will collide and creative ideas explored and expressed. “This new festival aims to encourage
the broader community to connect with the local arts sector and a diverse program which features song writing workshops, readings and workshops, zine, comic and book book binding studio, exhibitions and more has been developed,” Ms Tonkin said. “In addition there is also a special festival satellite event planned for the Viewpoint Handmade Gallery that will showcase 30 artists and writers. “Everyone is welcome to come along to the Bendigo library and enjoy what’s on offer at this inaugural fringe festival. “There will be something for everyone to enjoy.” Ms Tonkin said the festival committee,
which comprises representatives from Goldfields Libraries, BendArts, Viewpoint Handmade Gallery, Young Professionals Network and the council had pulled together an exciting programme of events. “The Bendigo Writers Festival which has positioned itself firmly on the city’s arts and cultural calendar and we think it makes perfect sense to schedule our fringe event to showcase other elements of Greater Bendigo’s thriving local arts at the same time,” she said. The first story is set in present day Melbourne, where single mother Annie works in her father’s restoration business. Asked to restore a Goldfields era painting, her imagination is captured by two young women gazing out from the canvas. As she researches the painting’s history, their lives are slowly revealed and Annie becomes drawn to them in a way she cannot explain. Why is she so intrigued, and why has a stranger in a dark coat started following her? The second story sends us back to 1867, where a paddle steamer captain plucks a barrel from the river and in it discovers a half-drowned girl. Named Alice by the captain’s wife, she has no memory of her name, her past or who tried to drown her. However Alice does have one amazing talent: she can see auras. The colours in an aura reveal a person’s true nature, but they also allow her to foretell impending doom and those she warns are rarely grateful for the prediction. Fleeing fear and suspicion, Alice and new friend Rosey run away to the goldfields, but however far she runs Alice cannot escape her past and a terrifying stranger in a dark coat pursues her wherever she goes. With such an unusual mix of elements, Colours of Gold could easily have been a disaster, however Dobbie has managed to weave a cohesive whole that will have readers rapidly turning the pages. The chapters alternate between 1867 and the present day with equal attention paid to each, the transitions smooth and easy to follow. The supernatural elements do occasionally stretch credulity so this is not for those who take their reading too seriously, but anyone simply after a great story will find themselves swept along by Dobbie’s vibrant characters and narrative prowess. This is a novel to be read for the sheer joy of losing yourself in a story well told. – Vanessa Hughes

Adding colour to the city Passion of the scary kind in mosque meet
T
HE row was over before it really began. At the beginning of this week’s council meeting discussing the proposed mosque, mayor Barry Lyons acknowledged the meeting was being held on the land of the Dja Dja Wurrung people. We all were waiting to see how things went. The councillors, council staff and the gallery, and it dawned on me we were all incomers pushing our way onto an unwilling nation. You can read the ins and outs of the meeting elsewhere in the Weekly, but it was drama at a grass-roots level. “We’re not racists. We just don’t want Muslims here,” was the flavour of the gallery comments. I would have preferred it if they were honest. There were shady characters in the gallery, and there were observers in the gallery, and there were people who didn’t care about anything other than stopping the mosque. We heard about the minaret being a danger to aircraft, we heard about Muslims breeding more, so parking would be an issue and we heard about Sharia Law being

forced on the people of Bendigo. This is laughable, and shows many people are not from the welcoming nation Australia claims to be. I cannot deny the passion of some of the more erudite attendees, but as an observer the meeting came across as a gathering of bullies who would be more of a threat to people’s safety than the Muslims they hope to keep out of Bendigo. There is no way I can speak as a Bendigonian, please excuse that, but I can speak as someone who lives in a multicultural society. Australia. I lived in England for 20 or
so years, and learned first hand a mix of races can only open our eyes to all that is good and bad in the world. In south London I lived less than 100 metres from a mosque, and this was 40 years ago. They was no call to prayer, there was no Sharia Law and I was not assaulted in my home. The people who attended were of a faith I had no knowledge of, but they did me no harm. If I was of any faith, it would have to be one where no one’s imaginary friend was better than another person’s imaginary friend, and I would not want to persecute the

other. So any argument against the mosque on anything other than planning grounds shows a complainer nothing more than a bigot. It’s a nasty word, and comes with an unfortunate image. I saw bigots aplenty at the Town Hall on Wednesday, but thankfully the councillors voted with the planning rules. I will admit if I am wrong in the years to come. But only if you agree to do the same if nothing but good comes from us opening our arms to people of all creeds and faith. After all, the Dja Dja Wurrung people have. Twitter@stevekendall1

dear dotty... Dear Dotty, I take great offence to your response to the girl who had an Outdoor Education student as a house mate. You inferred that Outdoor Education students are not normal. Speaking as an Outdoor Education student I have to tell you that I am a very nice, resourceful person, I take the rubbish out and leave it on the nature strip to compost. I have studded the walls of the lounge room with footholes and practise climbing. When I do fall it is not very far and I have put the couch cushions on the floor to break my fall. I often prepare meals which don’t need cooking such as cold porridge and I re-hydrate all my food. You will be amazed what a bag of dried up droppings can turn into – steak and custard – chicken and ice cream, it’s always a great surprise. Oh and I don’t need a fridge because I tie the meat in a plastic bag and leave it hanging in the toilet bowl to keep it fresh. Really put out, Horace. Dearest Horace, I can imagine living with you would be more than interesting. When you come across a person in your lounge room do you shine a flashlight on them and prod them with a stick? Do you look them up in a book before talking to them? I can save you a lot of trouble, they are in fact homo sapiens and generally quite peaceful, most of them live in houses in family groups. However if you don’t want to disturb their natural habitat, you’re prob-

ably best to move out and live in the backyard. Dear Dotty , Earlier this week my university housemates and I were trying to rid a pesky possum problem in the elm tree beside my bedroom window. Must be that time of the year because these frivolous fornicators keep making Godforsaken noises distracting us from study and much needed sleep. I’m afraid when we used our orange gun to scare them off we may have woken the neighbours. Can you think of a quieter alternative? Quintin, Quarry Hill. Dear Quintin, First may I admire your powers of alliteration, pesky possum problem, etc. Marvellous stuff. Now as to how to stop the creatures from fornicating. Just think about what puts you off sex. A bucket of cold water splashed onto the genitals? A sexually aroused alsatian? You could try either of these things but I think the easiest solution is to put an enlarged photograph of Christopher Pyne in the elm tree. Your pesky possum will run for the hills. Try not to look at the photo yourself, it may cause permanent libidinous damage. Twitter@DearDotty

Spain in the rain A
DRIZZLY wet Sunday, kids cooped up inside all day but relief is on the horizon with a party invitation, one of those parties at an indoor play centre. This wasn’t an occasion where you stand round watching kids consume lukewarm sausage rolls. Sure there was party food, play and ludicrously coloured slushies for the kids but there was also an amazing Spanish spread for the parents. I like to refer to Reuben as the import player for our under seven soccer team. David and Patricia have left family and friends behind in the struggling Spanish economy for David to work with a great local business. Patricia loves our questions about Spanish food and dreams of opening a Spanish bar in Bendigo. After a few too many glasses of cava, Emma and I dream up plans of how we could fund this, while Pete points out we’d only eat and drink the profits. As the kids played in the multi-storey play equipment, at a very Spanish time of late afternoon, David and Patricia proudly laid out before us a Spanish lunch.

EMPENADAS
C
Patricia had spent the morning cooking and was bursting with pride as she shared her favourites from home. As each plate was put down, we were encouraged to eat with what Google tells me was probably “ibuen provecho”. There was a tray of empanadas. The most beautiful pastry, with such a pretty pinched edging filled with a simple combination of tuna, onion and capsicum. Delicious croquettes with potato and ham. Two tortillas, one with potato and onion, the other with chorizo as well. The crowd favourite though was the stuffed capsicums. Patricia told us about the Spanish love of bread and how the best way to eat the
tortilla is to put a slice in a crusty roll. That was delicious, the creaminess of the tortilla highlighted by the contrast to the roll. As if I really needed to know another way to consume eggs, cream and carbs. I was fascinated by David’s horror at how early in the day Australians eat lunch and his enthusiasm for eating and sharing. I could easily be convinced to delay lunch until after 3pm for a spread like that. We left the party on a high. The kids on the usual sugar high. The parents on a high about how exciting it all was. As Bendigo attracts more diversity we experience other ways of life, how sharing meals can make a community.
RAFTALIVE is back in Bendigo this weekend, and Emma Dean is part of the show. Emma is 2013 Masterchef Australia winner, and her passion for food began in the paddocks and kitchen of her family country home near Bendigo. Her parents instilled a love of growing and cooking farm-fresh produce in Emma and her two sisters. “From my youngest years, I was taught to knead bread, grow vegies, tend to livestock and collect freshly laid eggs,”
she said. Emma’s first cookbook is a collection of more than 100 delicious recipes that captures Emma’s hobby-farm origins and her love of local, seasonal produce. Emma will be featuring on Saturday and Sunday with live stage demonstrations on lemon meringue eclairs and eclair praline noisette. Emma will also be running workshops on both days. The show will be held at the Prince of Wales Showgrounds Friday, Sat-
urday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Along with Emma, Treats will also be featuring Sheryl Ong Mui Ai from Buns in the Oven in Malaysia. Sheryl is an award winning sugar artist and specialises in custom made cakes and cupcakes. Sheryl will be running two master classes as well as stage demonstrations on all three days. Culinary questions with Jody and Brent Loam of the Willow Room Q. What is Salsify? A. Salsify is a long thin root vegetable that looks like a skinny parsnip. It has a white, pale flesh and rough skin that needs to be scrubbed and peeled before cooking. People say Salsify has a slight salty or oyster like taste after it’s been cooked. It can be used in soups and stews or simply steamed, roasted or mashed. Q. What are Bacon Avocados? A. Bacon avocados are a
cooler climate variety of avocado. They are in season right now and are slightly smaller in size with a lighter almost yellow coloured flesh that is normally dryer in texture than other avocados. Look out for this variety when buying at the moment, they should be better quality and cheaper. Q. How do you cook beef cheeks? A. Beef cheeks are great to cook in this colder weather. Marinate the beef cheeks
overnight in a good quality red wine. Drain off the wine and reduce it in a pot, cooking out the alcohol. Pat dry the beef cheeks and brown the outside in a hot fry pan. Pour over your reduced wine with some beef stock, herbs and garlic. Slow cook, covered at about 120C for three hours or until the cheeks are nice and soft. Remove the cheeks and reduce the cooking liquid until it’s slightly sticky, putting the cheeks back into the sauce before serving.

ALL CLEAR: Check-ups to vaccinations all under the one roof at Bendigo Medicial Centre.
ORE than seven million Australians live with a chronic illness like diabetes, heart disease, asthma or depression. More than half of 45 to 64 year-olds have at least one chronic condition, and for those aged 65 or older this rises to a staggering 82 per cent. These conditions reduce quality and quantity of life, increase disabilities and unemployment while accounting for more than half of all preventable hospital stays. While the prevalence of disease is rising in our community – we can however reduce its impact through proactive detection and management. And that’s where the Bendigo Medical Centre, owned and operated by local general practitioners who are passionate about longterm patient care, can help. Bendigo Medical Centre employs an innovative team-based approach to managing chronic conditions, with experienced practice nurses supporting the dedicated doctors.

All three of Bendigo Medical Centre’s practices in Bendigo, Epsom and Flora Hill also provide wound management and immunisations along with everyday general medical practice consultations. Cataracts are a common cause of visual difficulties in people over 60 years.
A cataract is the natural lens inside the eye which becomes cloudy. It is situated behind the pupil.
Two hours a week can make a difference
HE Baptcare Bendigo family home visiting program, or Home-Start, invites people to join their program to help support needy families. Volunteers or mentors visit families for two hours a week to talk, listen, help and much more. Raising a young family can be exhausting and isolating, so a visit from a Home-Start volunteer can make a real difference.
The program caters for all religions and cultures and is free to all. Since starting six years ago Baptcare Bendigo’s program has worked with more than 300 children and their families. Home-Start volunteers are often parents themselves or have experience with children and know too well the difficulties parents can face. “One of our client’s has four children, two with autism who we visited weekly for about a
the
Visual symptoms include: needing a frequent change of glasses; difficulties seeing fine print or reading street signs or enjoying clarity on television; glare and problems with night driving; colours appearing drab, diminished brightness.
The cataract is removed through a micro incision as small as 2.2 mm. An artificial lens (intraocular lens implant) is then put into the eye in the same place as where the cataract was and stays inside the eye forever and will never degrade. It needs no maintenance or replacement.
At the conclusion of the surgery no sutures are needed. The micro incision simply selfseals. Recovery is fast. Improved vision is often noted the next day (in some cases that very same day). There are minimal restrictions. Nearly everything from walking, bending, gardening, recreational activities, television and the like can be started within 24 hours.
Vision is improved and sometimes no glasses are needed afterwards. Eye Surgeons Bendigo is very experienced in Cataract surgery and employs the latest in techniques, equipment and lens implants.

T is a good bet you’ll see Justine Clarke everywhere you look over the next few weeks. Season two of the ABC’s Time of Our Lives premieres on June 26 at 8.30pm, and Justine brings her children’s show I am a... to the Capital Theatre on July 5 at 11am. Justine actively chased down her part in Play School. “I pursued it, got an audition and was in,” she said. “I count myself lucky.” This mum of three has two of her children as her biggest fans. “But the youngest likes Alex Papps,” she said. Justine has an acting pedigree stretching back many years, but said Play School took a special strength. “You really know when you’ve done a day on Play School,” she said. “There’s an awful lot that goes into it. “The live shows are something else, but the energy from the audience means I don’t feel spent at the end of the show. “My show is always about encouraging the audience to join in and make music together, to make it more like a party.” Justine is pleased her songs are now part of the Play School songbook. “The albums have won platinum and silver discs, and I feel I am doing something of value,” she said. Justine out of the TV brings mixed reactions from her viewers. “There are generally two categories of fans,” she said. “Some are in awe you have managed to get out of the TV, and some feel they know you already, and continue the conversation they have every day in their
JUSTINE CLARKE lounge room.” The dramatic difference in The Time of Our Lives brings a whole new range of skills on show. “They do feel completely different,” Justine said. With the second season of the show starting on June 26, Justine returns as Bernadette. The program’s shoulder to cry on has a new world to deal with as breast cancer looms for her character. The series runs for eight episodes, on
the back of the high-rating first season. “It’s aimed at a similar age group to those in the program,” Justine said. “So people relate to it. “As I get older as an actor I feel more able to voice any concerns I have. There is a dialogue in the production team, and the show is about collaborating and creating, and we all respond to that. “We know our characters well now, so we can all have input into the finished product.” – Steve Kendall

ITH winter finally here motorists need to ensure that their vehicle is ready to handle the wet and often treacherous road conditions. Things to check include windscreen wipers, the battery and of course, your tyres. Many drivers, particularly young people, are taken unawares by the changed conditions and sometimes lose control of their cars. It is very important that your tyres’ tread and tyre pressures are checked to prevent any accidents. Another factor to consider is that a dry
summer can have a detrimental effect on your windscreen wipers, drying them out or making them sticky, so that when you need them they will not work properly. Was your car hard to start this morning? Colder morning starts can deplete the cranking power of your battery if it is past its use by date. Hattam Street Tyre & Mechanical can check your battery’s condition to save you from being stranded with a dead battery. Hattam Street Tyre & Mechanical at 96 Hattam Street, Golden Square. Phone 5442 2577.

T is now winter and the days are definitely colder, daylight saving is a distant memory and you now need a jumper or coat in the evenings. And there is neither not light or the desire to get out into the cold and go for a ride or a run. So after all your good work over summer, are you going to sit on the couch and put the weight back on? Or are you going to keep your summer body and workout at home with some fitness equipment from Mr Rental? Mr Rental has equipment that will suit your needs. They have exercise bikes that you can either adjust manually or computer controlled bikes that program in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. There
are cross trainers that give you a low impact workout that is like skiing, ideal if you hope to get up to the snow this year. All this equipment is well maintained and nice and quiet so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and sizes of people. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125kg and go at 16kph and while that might not sound fast compared to a car, at 16kph you would still travel more than 5km in 20 minutes. So if you want to stay fit this winter then give Daryl and Kristine at Mr Rental a call on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778 or call in to 80b Garsed Street, Bendigo.

S the head man of the most numerous group of Chinese on the Bendigo goldfield, in the late 1850s and early 1860s, Fok Sing, as pointed out last week, was a man of influence. Fok Sing’s influence extended not only in the Chinese community but also within the Caucasian one as well. In the early 1860s Epsom was still enjoying a period of prosperity because of the alluvial gold being won from close to the surface of the ground in that locality. Among the Epsom alluvial gold seekers were a number of Chinese. As soon as a group of any nationality established themselves in a particular area, the entrepreneurs were hot on their heels to set up businesses to cater for the newly arrived crowd. Stores, refreshment purveyors, suppliers of goods and chattels, all saw any new rush as a commercial opportunity. In fact the shops, in the majority of cases, financially were far more successful and viable than the diggers for gold themselves. Rok A’Ying, was a Chinese store keeper on the Epsom rush. He among others,
catered not only for his countrymen but also for any Europeans that sought his particular goods. Among the stock of tools, food and other items was Chinese preserved fish. A quantity of the salted dried fish from Rok A’Ying’s stock was purportedly stolen by two fellow Chinese. Rok A’Ying’s store had been called Kum Quong (Chong) Lea, according to an article that appeared in The Age. So displeased was Rok A’Ying with the disappearance of the fish that he reported this to the police authorities, who eventually arrested two men, who belonged to the clan of Chin and Moy. But the two clans came under the protective umbrella of the head man Fok Sing. These alleged perpetrators of the stolen salted preserved fish were brought up before the Sandhurst (Bendigo) Circuit Court. Normal procedures followed in the court with both the prosecutor and the defendants arguing their respective cases. As the evidence presented to the Court on both sides was rather inconclusive, the two prisoners Chin and Moy were discharged.

AN AQUIRED TASTE: Salted preserved fish was stolen from Rok A’Ying .
This was to much delight of Fok Sing who was their head man. Fok Sing was of the opinion that the prosecuting store keeper Rok A’Ying should be taught a lesson and he took out his calligraphy brush and a quantity of paper to write notices in Chinese. These notices were posted up in the Epsom and Bendigo area. Translated the posted bills read as follows: All the people of our districts are hereby specially informed that one Rok A’Ying a general store keeper, under the style of Kum Quong Lea at Bendigo and as Kum Chong Lea at Epsom, is so very vicious, oppressing, and
desperate, that bystanders cannot bear to see, he reported the loss of a bag of salt fish, expressly to obtain the arrest of two men of the clan Chin and Moy respectively, and lodged them in the camp (lock up). Being in great wrath to see this, we therefore assembled together on purpose of providing the future inflictions. We accordingly inform all the people of our districts that they are prohibited to trade with the said A’Ying. Any persons found out dealing privately with the above, and brought up to the said society’s hall will be fined £10 and inflicted fifty lashes boulder (?): the
informer will be rewarded with £5. In default of the fine, we will assemble to take steps to send the defaulter to the authority to be punished, and levy the fine to his relations again. We will give no allowance whatever. Dated the Three Districts Company Hall 9th month 11th day. Here the company’s seal was attached. As a direct result of the above notices, Rok A’Ying’s customer base completely collapsed, so much so that he had to close his stores. This was the power of head men the likes of Fok Sing; his name by the way is also spelt Fook Shing.
OCAL author Larna Malone is compiling a book on the first men from the Bendigo district to volunteer for service in WW1. Entitled The First Lot, the book focuses on the 93 men who volunteered for the infantry. They served in the 7th Battalion, participating in the landing at ANZAC Cove, the 2nd Battle of Krithia, and the attack on Lone Pine. As far as possible, the events are described in their own words, through accounts recorded in letters and diaries. Larna is appealing for help to complete her book, however. She hopes to include a brief biography of each soldier, with a photograph if available. She is now particularly keen to track down photographs of the following men: Benjamin Noel Edwards, No 909, known as “Noel” from Quarry Hill. William Darwin, No 780, Known as “Bill”, member of Bendigo Highland Pipe Band. George Ninnis, No 809. John Truesdale, No 824, known as “Jack”, bookmaker. If you can help Larna, please email events@bendigoweekly.com.au

Are you paying too much tax?
HE Australian Taxation Office will again be paying close attention to the $19.5 billion of work-related expenses claimed each year by taxpayers. According to the ATO incorrect expense claims are becoming easier to detect. To avoid your tax return being held up or reviewed this year make sure your deduction claims are correct. This year the ATO will not be limiting its attention to particular occupations. Instead, particular attention will be paid to work-related expense claims relating to: overnight travel, transporting bulky tools and equipment; and the work-related proportion of use for computers, phones or other electronic devices. The ATO will continue to review incorrect or excessive claims for all other workrelated expenses. If you are claiming work-related expense deductions, you must have spent the money and deductions must be related to your job and you must have a record to prove it. When completing your tax return it is important to remember you should only

claim the work-related expenses you are entitled to. You must have incurred the expenses in the year you are claiming them. The expense must be work-related and not private. And remember if the expense has been reimbursed by your employer it cannot be claimed. You also need to keep records to support your claim. You can use records other than paper receipts; a full list of accepted records is now available on the ATO’s comprehensive website. Making claims for home office, mobile phone and computer expenses without any evidence supporting how the claims were apportioned is a common mistake according to the tax office. As is incorrectly claiming travel between home and work as a work-related expense. To help you get it right visit the ATO website for further information about workrelated expenses or contact one of the many tax agents featured on this page.

BUDDING soccer stars from across the Loddon Campaspe region took to Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve on Wednesday in the Campaspe, Goldfields and Sandhurst Division Soccer tournament. Schools from as far afield as
Echuca and Kyabram to the north, and Woodend to the south, fielded teams as 81 games including finals took place. Titles were decided in three divisions for both girls and boys, with the winning teams to go on to the region event in Swan Hill.
Kurtis on par for a top career By JOEL PETERSON
BENDIGO Senior Secondary College student Kurtis Lynch will not only represent his school, but he will also represent Victoria in August at the School Sport Australia Golf Championship. The School Sport Australia Golf Championships will be held at Middle Ridge Golf Club and City Golf Club, Toowoomba, for a week from August 24. Although getting selected in the team was one challenge, Lynch has another challenge on his hands: getting to the tournament. He and his family are aiming to raise around $3000 for the expenses involved. The year 11 BSSC specialist sport student has been playing golf since he was five, and has enjoyed a brilliant 2014 on the course. He was selected in Victoria’s under 18 state squad and was invited to join the prestigious Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne’s famed sandbelt. He is the recipient of the 2013-14 Bendigo Bank Academy of Sports Coaches Encouragement award and recent winner of the 2014 Belvoir Park Junior Open Championship, Buninyong Junior Masters and the Bendigo District (BDGA) Junior Championship. “It’s a great honour to be able to represent BSSC and the state at the National Championship,” he said. “I’ve had a great year so far and have worked hard to get to this point and get my game good enough to be on a handicap of 1.” BSSC principal Dale Pearce said he was confident Kurtis would do the college proud. “The whole college is right behind Kurtis. I’m sure he will compete at the highest level at the national tournament,” Mr Pearce said. “He is well on track for a great future in golf.” The Lynch Family is selling raffle tickets to raise the required funds, and can be contacted at lynchs@impulse.net.au.
FC Bendigo chases three
GETTING INTO IT: Soccer stars of the future battle it out in Epsom. Photos: ANDREW PERRYMAN. More photos at www.bendigophotos.com
FC BENDIGO will look to make it a hat-trick of wins this weekend when it takes on Sunshine George Cross on Saturday. The fledgling side is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 4-0 thumping of last-placed Brunswick City, and has kept clean sheets in consecutive weeks. However, Sunshine, the former club of FC Bendigo coach Steve Martin, are sitting fourth on the table but were last week thrashed 5-2 by Kingston City. FC Bendigo remain in 12th on the NPL1 table with four wins, seven losses and a draw, but are in somewhat of a logjam sitting only a game behind eighth-placed Springvale. The club’s juniors will take on North Geelong at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve, and the under-16 side especially will be looking to rebound after its first loss of the season to Whittlesea Ranges last week. Meanwhile in Bendigo Amateur Soccer League action Spring Gully looks to continue its charge up the table this week after defeating reigning premiers and top side Strathdale. The Reds’ 2-1 win leaves them only one point behind the Blues on the Men’s championship table. In other results Golden City stunned Colts United 3-1 for its first win of the season and Eaglehawk belted bottom side Epsom 4-0. In round 7 action, Strathdale faces a rematch with Strathdale at Beischer Park, Golden City hosts Epsom and Colts United does battle with Eaglehawk.

Roos chase 150-year win KANGAROO Flat will be looking to get the second half of the Bendigo Football Netball League season started with a bang, as the club looks to press for finals in its 150th season. The Roos have opened their season 5-4, and sit out of the top five only on percentage behind Eaglehawk, a big turnaround after winning only two games and finishing last in 2013. They take on Maryborough this week, who have won many admirers in season 2014 with the way the young Magpies go about their game plan. Pressure and effort are the cornerstones of Maryborough’s style, which reaped rewards last time out when it won its first game of the season against Kyneton. When the first sides met in round one Flat got the chocolates by 48 points, with Braydan Knox kicking four goals for the Roos in that contest. Maryborough have arguably been the league’s big improvers since that time, and led by tall targets in the versatile Tyson Macilwain and Matt Bond, the Magpies will be determined to put on a competitive display and draw level with Castlemaine on two wins. The Roos also released details of the club’s 150th anniversary weekend this week, to be held from August 1-3. Former players and officials will head back to the club for the anniversary celebrations, and organising committee spokesman Chris Harrington says some former Roos are heading back to Dower Park from as far afield as Western Australia.
All set for tennis
By JOEL PETERSON
NEARLy 250 top tennis players will do battle across five days during the June school holidays when the Bendigo Tennis Association hosts its winter junior and Australian money tournaments. The tournaments will run simultaneously across the 30-court Nolan Street complex, and have attracted a number of top senior and junior players who will be chasing national ranking points and $5000 in prizemoney. The Open women event has drawn an extremely strong field of 42 players, headed by Australia’s 12th-ranked player Viktorija Rajicic. Rajicic, who has a career high world ranking of 279, is no stranger to the Bendigo courts, having competed in the past three William Loud Bendigo International Pro Tour events, making the 3rd round of the singles at last year’s

event. She will face some stiff opposition in second seed Zoe Hives and fourth seed Alana Parnaby. The men’s field is headlined by Jeremy Beale, who has been drawn as the top seed.
Beale, who is a regular in ranking points events in Bendigo, was the hitting partner to 2014 Australian Open Champion Stan Warwinka at this year’s opening Grand Slam event.
He will face 76 others vying for the title, including Geelong’s Adam Lasky, MCC player Chanchai Sookton-Eng and the rapidly improving Adam Haanappel from Croydon Hills. Plenty of local players have also nominated for the tournament, with Isaac Watson (Open), Jordan Hicks (under 16s), Jack Armstrong (U16), Matilda Walsh (U16), Polly Barnett(U14), Carissa Brook (U12) and Tiahna Leader (U12) likely to be stronger contenders in their respective age groups. BTA executive officer Leon Retallick said the association is looking forward to the two high-quality events. “We have had excellent numbers again register for this year’s event, with some 248 entrants,” he said. The tournament runs from June 30 until July 4 and will be held at the Bendigo Bank Tennis Complex.
Diamonds to host England 3From Page 44 The Vixens’ defensive duo are no strangers to Bendigo, playing for the Vixens against Adelaide in an exhibition game in 2012. “The first ever international netball fixture to be played in regional Victoria will see Bendigo open the 2014 series against our country’s oldest sporting rivals with (Chatfield’s) Diamonds taking on (Mentor’s) England,” Drum said, “As well as having two of the top three ranked netball nations squaring off, netballers in the region can also look forward to local community clinics delivered by their international netball heroes in the lead up to the game.” Central Victoria has produced a number of international netballers, including current Diamonds squad members Caitlin Thwaites (Bendigo), Julie Corletto (Kerang) and Rebecca Bulley (Bendigo), and will become the 11th Australian city to host an international Test match. “We are absolutely delighted to host this event at the Bendigo Stadium,” Greater Bendigo council mayor Barry Lyons said. Australian coach Lisa Alexander said her team was excited to bring a game to regional Victoria. “Being our only international hit out between this year’s Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney, this Test series against two of the top ranked sides in the world is vital to our World Cup preparations,” Alexander said. Bendigo Stadium chief executive officer Jason Wallace echoed those sentiments, saying the tournament reflects the commitment the stadium and Greater Bendigo council have made to basketball. Spirit championship player Chelsea Aubry said the excitement of the announcement also extended through the playing group. “It’s great to have this kind of announcement for our team and
our town, it’s really exciting to be able to play this tournament in Bendigo,” she said. Spirit coach Bernie Harrower also paid tribute to the work of council and the stadium, saying it would act as the perfect lead-in to the season. “We have been able to get great support over the past two years and to have this tournament will hopefully only add to that,” Harrower said.

IN another basketball coup for Bendigo, the Bendigo Stadium will host the 2014 and 2015 Women’s National Basketball League Spring Shield tournments. The annual pre-season tournament has been held in Dandenong the past two years and will see all eight WNBL teams make the trip to Bendigo to battle for the shield from October 10-12 this year. The tournament begins five days after the end of the FIBA Women’s World Championship in Turkey, and will bring Australia’s best female basketballers together for the pre-season hitout. Bendigo won the tournament before going onto win the WNBL title in the 2012-13 season, with Dandenong winning the shield last season. Basketball Australia chairman Scott Derwin said Bendigo, which has hosted the past two WNBL grand finals, has established itself as a true basketball city. “The Wattle Valley WNBL Spring Shield brings together Australian women’s basketball elite together in the one location for three days of wall-to-wall competition,” Derwin said. “Fans get the opportunity to see the WNBL’s biggest stars all in the one place, including our Jayco Australian Opals, who will be competing hot off the heels of the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women. “Hosting the past two WNBL grand finals, Bendigo has proven itself a true basketball city; we know the fans of the region will embrace the Spring Shield and get along to see the action.” Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Barry Lyons said the city is proud to host the tournament.
