RIGHT TRACK By ANTHONY RADFORD
PLANS are being put in place to have a suburban train network in Bendigo within a decade. The latest round of Greater Bendigo council’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy, and its recently-released draft Economic Development Strategy, have both highlighted the plan.
■
Suburban rail system ‘within a decade’
The success of the Kangaroo Flat station and the construction of the new Epsom station have inspired planners to think big. The proposal includes building new stations at Huntly, Maiden Gully, Golden Square and Marong. The longer-term vision features
new stations every two kilometres. This would see a station between Marong and Maiden Gully, Maiden Gully and Eaglehawk, Eaglehawk and Bendigo, Epsom and Huntly, as well as a station at Lansell Square and two stations between Bendigo and Epsom.

Council Strategy manager Trevor Budge said the Eaglehawk and Epsom stations already provided options. “If you think about it, Bendigo has, and other cities don’t, an internal rail system that can be used,” he said.
“If we can bring on the business park and Marong (town expansion) in the next five years, once we have Marong to Kangaroo Flat it raises the potential of having a suburban rail system... not relying on the Melbourne to Bendigo system. “If we can have that in 10 years that would be a fantastic achievement.”

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, July 18, 2014
SUTHERLAND Property will offer a three bedroom period home in Drought Street for auction on Saturday morning. The renovated weatherboard property is in one of Bendigo’s most idyllic locations, close to the CBD, Rosalind Park, View Street, local schools and the hospital precinct. The home features high ornate ceilings and is set behind a charming picket fence. Saturday’s auction kicks off from 11am. Just up the road, CR Martin will auction a superb four bedroom brick home at 16 Anderson Street from 1pm on Saturday. Set on a huge 978 square metre allotment, with a heated in-ground saltwater pool, and a sauna/spa entertaining area, the double storey home also features a double garage and powered workshop, ducted heating and evaporative cooling, a stunning modern light-filled kitchen in a central location. Elders Real Estate has a 6.2 hectare (15.25 acres) parcel of land close to the new Jackass Flat residential development for sale at between $340 to $390,000. The large block was auctioned on Wednesday before a crowd of about 20 interested onlookers, but was eventually passed in. PH Property reports a three bedroom home in the hospital precinct remains for sale after being passed in at auction last weekend.
RENOVATED: 63 Drought Street will be auctioned on Saturday morning. The property at 4 Bailes Street offers the prospective purchaser great potential for further development in one of the city’s most sought after areas, subject to council approval. Meanwhile, a tidy home at 12 Waugh Street Kangaroo Flat is also still up for grabs after it too was passed in at auction. The property has been described as being ideal for the first home buyer, investor or renovator. Offering three bedrooms, the
home is on a corner block and features a neat and tidy yard. In its latest property update, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria says house prices in regional Victoria have risen to a new record median of $327,000, representing a solid 4.1 per cent yearon-year growth. For units in regional Victoria, the median price was $254,000, up two per cent year-on-year. The data, finalised this week by the REIV for the year to 30 June, provides a counterbalance
to news earlier this year of employment changes in some areas of the state, by major employers such as Qantas and Alcoa. Fluctuating employment levels can exert a cooling effect on growth. However, the REIV says regional property prices are being buoyed by continued record low interest rates which have been on hold for the past 11 months. More details from the REIV can be found on page 43 of this week’s Property Guide.

Lay backs mosque
VICTORIA Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay has criticised the anti-Muslim sentiment in the Bendigo mosque debate. In recognising the contribution of Muslims to Victoria, and to mark Ramadan, Commissioner Lay singled out the mosque debate. “I am proud to be part of the Victorian community, a community Muslims have helped build – a diverse, productive and prosperous state,” he said. “That is why I was particularly disappointed to read about the recent controversy surrounding a planning application to build Bendigo’s first mosque. “It is natural that the small Islamic community of Bendigo – the estimated number is around 300 people – would want to practise their religion in their traditional place of worship.” Commissioner Lay said the application to build a mosque should have attracted little attention. “Unfortunately as the lawful and proper planning process continued, a small minority of people decided to vilify the applicants,” he said.
Top cop calls for acceptance
“Of course the planning process allows people the right to object to any development within their community – that is right and proper. “But let me be very clear. “Objections should not be expressed in a way that incited hatred or distrust towards a particular sec-
loons that filled Hargreaves Mall in Bendigo in a show of support for multiculturalism by community leaders and local residents. “I also welcome the intervention of the Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, who challenged the views of mosque opponents.
Victoria Police and the broader community welcomes people of all faiths tion of the community. “It is unacceptable.” Commissioner Lay said “thankfully the Greater Bendigo council found in favour of the planning application”. “And the vast majority of Bendigo residents drowned out the anti-Muslim sentiment that made such a discordant noise in that otherwise harmonious city,” he said. “I was heartened to read about the sea of brightly coloured bal-
“The local member made the powerful point that citizenship ceremonies emphasise freedom of both – speech and religion.” Chief Commissioner Lay also praised Planning and Multicultural Affairs Minister Matthew Guy along and Deputy Opposition Leader James Merlino for coming out strongly in support of the Muslim community in Bendigo and their mosque “And Police Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney warned anti-
Muslim groups in Bendigo that any objections to the building of the mosque must be done respectfully and within the law,” he said. “It is important that as leaders, we do not allow a hateful few to undo the wonderful work that has been done by many in the name of multicultural harmony. “Let me be very clear. As a citizen of this state and as its Chief Commissioner of Police, I believe, and will work hard to ensure, that Muslims have the same right to practise their religion as anyone else. “That includes the right to build a place of worship in Bendigo – in accordance with local government planning regulations. “And the right to live peacefully. And the right not to be harassed, harangued or threatened. “Victoria Police and the broader community welcomes people of all faiths – all races and all ethnicities. “That is why we are a wonderful community.” Tell us your thoughts

GREATER Bendigo council has joined an anti-racism campaign, Racism. It Stops With Me, to promote a multicultural society. The Australian Human Rights Commission wrote to mayor Barry Lyons last month to invite the city to join the national anti-racism campaign. Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane praised the city for embracing diversity and approving Bendigo’s first mosque. “It has been disappointing and disturbing to learn of the sentiments that have been expressed about this issue. There is no place for racial bigotry and religious intolerance in Australian public life,” the letter said. Following heated debate about a mosque’s approval and negativity towards the city, the Commission invited council to join the campaign. “I would like, however, to commend you for your leadership in setting a civil and welcoming tone for your community,” Dr Soutphommasane said.
IN THE FRAME: Council chief executive officer Craig Niemann and mayor Barry Lyons. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “Your support for the campaign would be a powerful statement of Bendigo’s commitment to tolerance and reflect the city’s proud multicultural heritage.” The National Anti-Racism Strategy raises awareness of racism
and “empowers Australians to confront prejudice”. “It is about equality. We are a multicultural city and we believe in multiculturalism,” Cr Lyons said. Locals are encouraged to attend a community event in Har-
greaves Mall this Saturday from 10.30am to pledge their support. Locals are encouraged to take selfies with their hand on their heart and post them to social media with the hashtag #ItStopsWithMeBendigo.

ANTI-MOSQUE: The truck was in Bendigo this week.
Sign of the time A “STOP THE MOSQUE” truck was driving around Bendigo this week. Middle-Eastern-style chanting music was playing from a speaker and Koran quotes were being read out from the rental vehicle with anti-mosque banners on its sides. The vehicle had reappeared on Wednesday after being sighted across the city the previous day. Local resident Nathan Wingrave saw the vehicle driving on McIvor Highway on Tuesday into central Bendigo about noon. ”It was a white, small truck like the ones you use to move house in,” he said. “It had laminated paper or card ‘Stop the Mosque’ signs on its side and a speaker on the front of the truck playing middle-eastern style music. “There was also a man reading quotes from the Koran. “The music sounded to be the same-style which was played when councillor Mark Weragoda was speaking at the council meeting (last month).” Mr Wingrave said there was a driver and passenger inside the vehicle. Greater Bendigo Planning and Development director Prue Mansfield said they had been made aware a vehicle would be in the city. “The city was informed of plans for a truck to travel around the Greater Bendigo area and this action does not require a permit,” she said. “The truck must observe all Victorian road rules and park legally if it were to stop, and any noise levels must not negatively impact on public amenity.” Bendigo Police were called to Lansell Square on Tuesday after reports people were handing out anti-mosque pamphlets but were not seen when police arrived. Police are looking into a number of complaints and intercepted the vehicle on Williamson on Wednesday.

‘Racism. It stops with me’ campaign launch Mayor Cr Barry Lyons is asking Greater Bendigo residents to join the ‘Racism. It stops with me’ campaign. The Australian Human Rights Commission wrote to Cr Lyons last month and commended him on his leadership and Council’s approval to construct the City’s first mosque. The Commission also asked the City to join its anti-racism campaign. More than 170 organisations throughout Australia have already made a commitment to nurture a respectful and inclusive community. Cr Lyons said he would not tolerate
racism in the community and expected residents would not either. “This campaign is designed to raise awareness and empower Australians to confront prejudice in their community. Greater Bendigo residents are proud and inclusive and I look forward to their full support,” he said. To promote the campaign, the City will hold a community event in the Hargreaves Mall on Saturday July 19 from 10.30am, where residents can come along and make a pledge in support of the campaign. An official pledge and speech will be made by the Mayor at 11am.
A group photo will be taken of everyone attending the event and we encourage people to come wearing their school, sport or work uniform or cultural dress to represent the wonderful mix of people in our community. If you do not have access to social media and cannot attend Saturday’s community event, you can sign an antiracism pledge in the foyer of the City’s office in Lyttleton Terrace and Heathcote.

Independent Review progress update
33 of the 69 recommendations arising from the Independent Review of the City of Greater Bendigo have now been completed and progress has been made on 29 others.
The City is working hard to attract big events to Greater Bendigo and this announcement adds to the long list of sporting events secured in recent times.
Significant achievements so far include:
Further details of the sports competition venues, fixtures and times will be made available closer to the games in 2015.
The A-Z guide is one of our most popular publications, providing details on all the services we provide and where you can find more information about them.
• Improved budgetary processes including a new framework for evaluating and prioritising capital works projects and operational initiatives
For the first time, the guide also includes details of private businesses that provide hard rubbish collections services in Greater Bendigo.
• New planning delegations to allow more time for Councillors to dedicate to strategic planning and policy issues
The Services Guide is published every two years so keep a copy readily available for when you need to find out more about the many and varied services that we provide.
The City has flicked the switch on new competition standard lighting for pitch 5 at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. The $250,000 project was completed by the City in partnership with the State Government and Epsom Football Club.
• Improved access to information and services relating to statutory planning • New strategies and policies for managing the city’s enormous assets and infrastructure portfolio
This infrastructure is in line with Football Federation Victoria guidelines and means the likes of Melbourne Victory FC or Melbourne City FC can play competition or display matches on the pitch. The lights will also be utilised locally by Bendigo football clubs, which can now play to a higher standard of competition.
Panton Street works to stop flooding problems

The City is undertaking major works at the corner of Panton and Cedar Street Golden Square to rectify flooding issues. A number of local businesses were flooded in 2010 and 2011 when the Golden Gully Creek broke its banks. Since that time the City and the North Central Catchment Management Authority have undertaken works to remove vegetation from the creek on either side of Panton Street. The City is now undertaking a major $350,000 project to enlarge the culverts that run under Panton Street to improve the water capacity of the creek. Works are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Sports included in the games include aquatics, athletics, bocce, cricket, equestrian, golf, softball and tennis.

We are simply going through the growing pains that a lot of small cities go through as
CAFES, restaurants and businesses could open their doors longer under Greater Bendigo council’s vision for “visitor-friendly” trading hours. Council’s draft Economic Development Strategy 2014-2020 wants more businesses to cater to the increasing local and visitor demand. “The (council) recognises the value of a thriving and varied hospitality and retail sectors,” the draft strategy said. “The fact that so many of our cafes and restaurants (and shops) are closed on Sundays and some weekdays and evenings not only continues to frustrate many in our local community, but it also harms our tourism appeal and potential,
they continue to mature and sophisticate.” Bendigo Traders’ Association president Ross White said tourists brought additional money to the city. “By encouraging tourists to come to Bendigo it brings outside money which is good so we aren’t

also be irregular... but we do believe that it is financially viable for us,” he said. Participants who contributed to the draft strategy noted the role of council to tell traders about upcoming events as an incentive to open. Mr White said council need to open the multi-storey carpark and host more activities in Hargreaves Mall to encourage people into the CBD. Before the Bounce owner Bob Morley said council was trying to make the city more vibrant and inviting for all people. “When stores open, they function but again, some people can’t afford it,” he said. “You have to be consistent. People don’t like inconsistency. “Everyone has got to do it (open) or it doesn’t work.”
Bendigo’s past makes sound archive history ONE of the earliest surviving sound recordings made in Australia was recorded in Bendigo. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in Canberra has a wax cylinder which was recorded in Bendigo about 1904. The two-minute recording is of Albert Henry Randall, secretary of the Quarry Hill Methodist Sunday School, announcing the results of that year’s examination process. “To give you an idea of how rare it is, the earliest surviving Australian sound recording, 1896, is only eight years older than the Bendigo wax cylinder,” curator Tamara Osicka said. “In 2012, the NFSA was contacted by Dorothy Tietze (nee Lithgow), who wished to donate a brown wax cylinder recording of a relative.” Little was known about this home recording except that it was of Randall reading a Sunday school report in Bendigo. The cylinder had been brought to Queensland from Victoria sometime between 1904 and 1907 on a visit by Wooton and Ellen Lansell to their daughter’s family, George and Eva Lithgow. “Brown wax cylinders are incredibly fragile and could only be played a limited number of times, so not many of these early recordings still survive,” Ms Osicka said. “This is a pity as these recordings can tell us much about the
social history of this period, things that cannot be revealed in photographs or letters. “Home recordings such as this one are interesting because they capture social history, the story that’s not told in the history books, giving us a more intimate picture of society.” Once the cylinder was selected for the collection, the priority was to ensure its safe arrival at the NFSA. “Rather than trusting a courier, I decided to hit the road and pick it up in person from Dorothy in Queensland,” Ms Osicka said. “The cylinder was transported in a special foam-packed suitcase to ensure its safe arrival in Canberra. I was nursing it in the car on the way to the airport like a newborn baby only to watch it bump its way down on the conveyer belt at airport security.” The condition of the cylinder was poor with large areas of mould and scuffing and light scratches on the surface. As a result, the audio quality was also poor, with Albert Randall’s voice so quiet that it was almost inaudible and there was a lot of surface noise. “Confirming the exact date the recording proved difficult,” Ms Osicka said. “Albert Randall gave his first report as secretary of the Sunday School on 9 March 1904, so the recording must have been made on or after that date. SMOKES OUT: But rules are being broken.
Puffs not magic By CHRISTINE mCGINN
NEW State Government legislated smoking bans, calling for smokers to butt out, are not being sufficently policed in Bendigo. Greater Bendigo council employees saw smokers in the Hargreaves Mall this week, but refrained from asking them to butt out. The laws, designed to be self-regulated, were rolled out on April 1 to disallow smoking in a 10 metre distance around playgrounds, including Fun Loong. The State Government laws extends to public swimming pools, playground equipment, sporting venues at underage events and skate parks. Council Environmental Health and Local Laws manager Susannah Milne said implemenation of the smoking bans were still in the “early education and awareness stage”. “It is important to educate the public first and make people aware so they
have time to adjust,” she said. “There is no set timeframe for when this stage will end and enforcement will begin, as no additional funding has been made available for extra resources to monitor the bans in public places.” Health Minister David Davis said there was “strong community support” for the bans when children were present. “This means most people voluntarily comply with the smoking bans and expect others to do so,” he said. “Council inspectors authorised under the Tobacco Act 1987 may also provide information about and, when necessary, enforce the ban and issue a fine. “When attending a complaint, the first goal of the inspectors is to make sure smokers understand the ban.” Council inspectors can issue on-the-spot fines of $144.
Mr Davis said the department offered funding to councils to help implement the new laws. “Free ‘no smoking’ signs are also available for councils to install. The Department of Health has provided education materials and conducted training sessions to support councils,” he said. “The Department of Health has developed an expedited process for appointing council local laws officers as inspectors under the Tobacco Act 1987, to enhance the capacity of councils to undertake education and enforcement duties.” Ms Milne said the smoking bans challenged people’s habits. “These bans require people to undergo a mind shift, which is easier said than done,” she said. “The city has installed some signage and is continuing to look into where more, larger signs can be placed.” 4CarTOON Page 18 4EdiTOriaL Page 19
THE future of writing takes centre stage at this year’s Bendigo Writers Festival, with everything from freedom of speech to how to create a blog on the August 8 to 10 program. A heavyweight lineup of experienced journalists take part in the headline session, Not Drowning, Adapting, which looks at the way newspapers are responding to the digital age. Hosted by Bendigo Weekly editor Anthony Radford, the panel includes Neil Chenoweth, Sara James and Lawrie Zion, who will discuss what’s in store for journalists and the relationship between print and online media. Chenoweth is the author of Packer’s Lunch and Murdoch’s Pirates, and writes for the Australian Financial Review. He recently broke the story about how huge companies such as Apple use tax havens such as Ireland to escape paying tax on Australian sales, and he has continued writing stories about Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, over many years. Sara James is an Emmy-Award-winning foreign correspondent, who files for NBC News, The Today Show and Dateline. She moved to Australia from New York in 2008, and then wrote reports about the Black Saturday bushfires. Lawrie Zion is professor of journalism at La Trobe University. A for-
mer Triple J announcer, and a pop music historian, he has completed a book about journalism in the digital age, and also a survey about what happens to retrenched print journalists in the new communications environment. As well as this session, Lauren Mitchell talks about blogging, and Matt Blackwood joins in a discussion about new opportunities for writing. Blackwood drives much of the interest in “locative literature” in Melbourne, where projects are developed that put words into public spaces, in laneways and parks, on walls and in windows. “Not just what you write, but how you write… and then, how you make it available for others to read – that’s one of the big themes at this year’s festival,” festival artistic director Rosemary Sorensen said. “No one wants to lose quality journalism, or quality writing for that matter, so it’s really important we keep thinking about how to get access to the best. “The festival is all about getting ideas out there to share, and providing us with strong ideas to encourage us all to feel a part of the powerful communications revolution.” For more information on sessions at Bendigo Writers Festival, www.bendigowritersfestival.com.au or at The Capital on 5434 6100.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, July 18, 2014
Bin plan saves waste ST John of God hospital staff and volunteers munched on color-coded pancakes last week to celebrate the launch of their new sustainability initiative. Spurred on by the success of earlier projects that saw the hospital honoured as a finalist in the 2012 Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards, the Towards Zero Waste program aims to reduce the hospital’s waste to landfill by 70 per cent. Stage one is underway with the introduction of a simple two-colour bin system in every room including
patient rooms. “Until now, we have had a six-metre skip heading to landfill every day,” hospital chief executive officer Darren Rogers said. “If we kept that waste, we would fill our atrium to the roof in 18 months. “The new bins will help us significantly reduce our waste to landfill and increase our recycling. “It’s a significant financial saving for us and reduces our environmental impact. “We’re improving the health of our business and the health of our planet. It’s
a win-win.” Supported by Bendigo Sustainability Group facilitator and educator Ian McBurney, the hospital’s Growing Greener Group, or 3G Team, conceived the simple twobin solution. The 3G Team is made up
ers, displays and even a You Tube video to help hospital staff adapt to the new waste process. The coloured pancakes were a light-hearted visual reminder of the blue co-mingled recycling bins and the red bins for waste destined
We’re improving the health of our business and the health of our planet of staff from across all hospital departments. They have produced post-
for landfill. Mr McBurney has mentored the hospital’s sustainability program since 2012 and was full of praise for the hospital’s attitude to sustainability. “St John of God Hospital in Bendigo is to be commended for their efforts to improve their environmental outcomes,”he said. “They are becoming role models not only for the Bendigo business community, but for the whole healthcare sector in Australia. “The hospital is demonstrating that improving environmental outcomes is good for business. “Waste disposal and energy consumption are big costs to many businesses.” Mr McBurney said the hospital had a good track record of sustainability. “The 2012 project to switch the hospital to LED lighting saw St John of God reduce its energy consumption by 11.1 per cent in the first year,” he said.
BIN THERE: St John of God’s is doing its bit to cut down landfill. “That’s a significant financial saving and you would have to plant 47,300 trees or take 130 cars off the road to equal the reduction in emissions in just one year. “Another example of a simple way businesses can
change – a polystyrene cup keeps your drink warm for three minutes and then sits in landfill while 17 generations of your family pass. “But recycling one drink can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.”

In the finals
THE Bendigo Weekly has been named as a finalist in one of Australia’s most prestigious newspaper awards. The Weekly is a finalist in the Newspaper Works Newspaper of the Year awards. Weekly general manager Peter Kennedy said the nomination was an honour. “Given the number of community newspapers across the country, and New Zealand, to be named in the top 10 is remarkable,” he said. “Also, to be one of only three country newspapers in the final is another great achievement. “It was the only category we entered, so it is a real coup for us to be given this recognition. “It is also the first time we have entered these awards.” Kennedy said he was proud the
awards had decided to recognise organisations that focused on the printed product. “In this current environment, it is easy for anyone to throw anything up online and call it news,” he said. “Not only does that damage the brand, but it damages the community. “Our journalism motto is simple: be first and be the best. Even though we are a weekly, we constantly break stories in our newspaper and online. “We set the news agenda for our city and we are proud of that. “We are also proud of our numerous exclusives and our focus on quality photography and design. “Knowing what your audience wants, and listening to them is the perfect fit for our philosophy. “

TRECKING through the idyllic landscape of Wilsons Promontory National Park, a group of students with refugee backgrounds from Bendigo Senior Secondary College got down to nature, and learnt about one of Victoria’s most visited places. Parks Victoria organised the program, which hoped to connect diverse communities with parks and nature. The 27 students from Karen State in Burma spent four days camping at Tidal River, undertaking activities around the beachfront location. Luke Johnson, an Indigenous ranger at the park, spent time with the students, and taught them about the historic area. He said that the group were full of energy, and very enthusiastic about the trip. Students also learnt how to throw a boomerang. “They were some of the best boomerang throwers I’ve ever seen,” he said. “I felt privileged to have had the chance to get to know a very special bunch of people.” BSSC EAL VCAL co-ordinator Mardi Holland said the school were thankful for the opportunity. – Sam Kane

Let’s talk about changes to aged care. Aged care should be decided by the person who knows you best – you. That’s why aged care changes from 1 July 2014 give you more choice, more control and more of the services you might need to help you stay independent. New financing arrangements also start. So if you’re getting older and need help, or if you’re caring for someone who does, call My Aged Care or visit the website to find out what you need to know to start planning and talking about aged care with your family and loved ones.

Suburban rail plan for Bendigo 3From Page 1 Mr Budge said there may be a chance to test the idea sooner rather than later. “In peak periods the system to Melbourne could go every half an hour, with signalling improvements at Kyneton,” he said. “Half an hour service between Eaglehawk, the
Maybe we can look at the bigger picture CBD and Kangaroo Flat suddenly doesn’t look too bad. “If we get intra-urban travel and get intra-urban passengers, maybe we can run intra-urban trains. “Castlemaine to Bendigo is a crowded train in the mornings. Maybe we can look at the bigger picture with Kyneton, Castlemaine and reopen Harcourt and right up to Echuca.”
Mr Budge said highlighting the proposal could help guide residential development. “I believe the fact we have a station at Epsom is the reason why in the past three years more houses have been built at Epsom than any other part of Bendigo,” he said. “The community realises the importance of linking housing and employment.” The preferred ITLUS plan also raises the possibility of creating a tram line between La Trobe University and Bendigo hospital. While that plan, which could cost $60 million to build and $3m a year to run, is a long way off, Mr Budge said it should be considered in relevant planning decisions. “What we will be suggesting is you don’t do anything that will compromise the potential to run a tram route in those streets,” he said. “For the foreseeable future it will be buses. It may be buses forever because it may never stack up. “Bendigo at 100,000 can’t support a tram from the university to the hospital, but at 200,000 it starts to look feasible.”
easing the road jam THE push to create a suburban rail system in Bendigo is based around its transport spine. Being surrounded by forest has stopped largescale widespread expansion, as seen in places such as Ballarat and Geelong. Greater Bendigo council Strategy manager Trevor Budge said that presented the city’s schools, businesses and residents with rare opportunities. He said about 25 per cent of the city’s population lived within 500 metres of the walking and cycling path running from Epsom to Big Hill. “There are 16 schools on that path,” he said. “One of the projects is to complete the link, between the Chinese museum and Golden Square, about 1.5km. “About 75 per cent of Bendigo’s retail floorspace is along that path. “A very high proportion of Bendigo’s jobs are also along that corridor.” One of the schools along that path is White Hills Primary School. A survey conducted with senior students and their parents found only 10 per cent of them rode or walked to school. It also found 86 per cent of them said they wanted to. “If that is representative of the city... with the right facilities and encouragements and safety measures... it would take enormous pres-

sure off that early-morning traffic,” Mr Budge said. School principal Damien Jenkyn said the school had looked at all the factors surrounding the issue. “We looked at what are the blockers and opportunities for travel,” he said.
“There is a huge amount of traffic on our roads and cutting that down in the morning and afternoon is important. “Coupled with that we’ve been working with and looking at pedestrian and bike infrastructure with
council staff to see where the gaps are so we can fix those so parents are more willing to let their children ride and walk to school. “It is not going to be done overnight. Infrastructure is an issue, but its an attitudinal one as well.”

Indulgent budget GREATER Bendigo council’s $166 million budget contains good things, but it does indulge and waste. It will spend between $1016 million pro-rata on low productivity tourism activities. Council claims rates increases are necessary to meet community demand and population growth. But is that entirely true? It certainly does not explain constant CBD works at the expense of rural and suburban needs. And don’t be distracted by claims of a six per cent rates rise. According to council’s budget, rate revenue for the 2013-14 financial year was $73 million. For 201415, $81.5 million. An extra $8.5 million snaffled. A whopping 11.6 per cent. An extraordinary increase, out of line with 2.5 per cent inflation and 1.5 per cent population growth. On top of rate grabs, residents face other cost increases, such as gas/electricity/water/sewage, insurance, car rego, child or age care, medical, pharmaceuticals, food and general purchases; adding a further $1000 extra annually. This plundering affects particularly young families, and those wholly or partially dependent on welfare, or who are not cash rich. Don’t forget state and federal government proposed changes affecting many residents by some thousands of dollars. Then there is the effect of council’s compounded rates and stuff-ups over the past 10 years adding up to $900 to each rate bill. High-handed council somehow believes it can grab what it needs, even if some of its projects are not vital. Residents do not have that luxury. We cannot demand income increases to cover cost surges. Without a rates increase council will still collect a lazy $3+ million by natural growth; supplementary rates $1,600,000 – properties and improve-
ments completed during the year, and $1,500,000 from 820 new assessments. Enough to pay the increased bills. Council has its tentacles in too many pies. Councillors must look for efficiencies. Gut the rubbish, minimise cost distortions, redeploy staff, delay nonessential projects, and support roads, infrastructure and service projects in the suburbs and rural areas. Leave the rates rise with residents, they’ll know how to spend it. Council’s marketing hype may not acknowledge it, but the private business sector will plough on regardless. Council has a service monopoly. As consumers we unfortunately cannot choose another provider. Councillors must be realistic and budget prudent. Ted Coleman, Strathfieldsaye
Library disappoints I READ that the architects of the Bendigo library have won an award for the building, and I agree that we now have splendid civic building, beautifully landscaped. But a library is not just a building. I was in Kerang when the new library was built, and I do not think many people liked the building as it was going up. But when it was completed, we had a library full of light and air, the stacks were bright and well labelled, the librarians were stationed at a large reception desk, and the atmosphere was most welcoming. Contrast that with our new library – the interior is ill-lit and gloomy; it is difficult to read the labelling on the stacks, and indeed the book titles; there is no focal point, and due to the new in-and-out system (which is fine) no contact with the librarians. I have been a user of public libraries all my life, and I have to say yes, we have a grand building, but it has no heart. So disappointing. Gwen Parker, Bendigo

Cesspool of deceit OH so predictably, Coalition supporters are now saying in the latest newspaper comments that they want the Senate abolished. Would that come with the proviso that this would occur only when they do not have control of the “House of Unrepresentative Swill”. Big Clive “twerker” Palmer is about to make life difficult for all political parties, particularly the Coalition, by signalling he has no intention of swallowing any of the Prime Minister’s double speak. But all we hear from this chaotic, dysfunctional lot, is scrapper da carbon tax, and stopper da boats. Now we have been told by our own flying kangaroo to go jump, as there will be no decrease in fares, as well as Virgin Airlines, Coles and Woolworths informing us of no decreases in food either. Looks like those $100 legs of lamb are off the menu. So it’s official – there will be no price decreases with the erasing of the carbon tax, and if we see any decrease in electricity and gas prices, that all depends on PUP rejecting the Coalition senate leaders bluff and Tony Abbott’s attempt at more deception. Furthermore, any reduction will only be for 12 months, but the carbon tax will be gone forever. So Mr Abbott has conned us all again, as we expected, and latest reports indicate he is considering a double dissolution in the next six to 12 months. Bring it on and rid us of your cesspool of deceit, confirmed once again by the top economists in the country. Our projected deficit is two per cent of GDP, net public debt is expected to peak at 15 per cent of GDP. If, and it’s a huge if, he survives until the next election, can you just imagine their electoral add campaign? Won’t cost much. Blank screens don’t. Ken Price, Eaglehawk

this bendigo life Cuppa with a little extra body By lauren Mitchell
THE trusty Kambrook had been getting a beating. “Who wants another cuppa?” I called, losing count of how many times I’d boiled the jug that day. Winter you see. We’ve spent the past month rotating in front of the fire drinking hot bevvies, making comments like “ohh, there’s a bit of heat in that”. It’s a hard life. It’s got to the point where we’re afraid to pass the kitchen. It’s like there’s an invisible trip wire that sets off a chorus of “yes please, I’d love a cuppa” even if none was offered. I was feeling generous this morning and with three cups on the bench, tailored to the household’s drinkers, I took the jug and went to fill it at the sink. Now, it’s not often I check before I fill. I mean, why would you? If the little measurement on the side says it’s empty, it’s empty. It wasn’t empty. At first I thought there was a little tangle of wire in there.

That would have been strange enough. I stuck my finger in to loosen it from where it clung to the spout. (Okay, now this is where I stop and warn any arachnophobia sufferers reading to skip to the next blog. Find yourself someone’s nice travel account of their bucket list trip to see the Dog on the Tucker Box or something.)
i thought there was a little tangle of wire It was a huntsman spider. Dead. But fully formed. Eight legs. Absolutely huge. It dawned on me slowly… “How long have we been drinking essence of spider broth?” It came out a little frantically. And no one could answer me, because how often do you look in your kettle? I sent a text message to the regular coffee drinker not present and got this reply…. “At work once I found two frogs in the kettle. Looked like they’d
been there a while. My workmates had been drinking for God knows how long. I looked at them puzzled and said ‘don’t you ever look in the kettle?’ They thought I’d made it up. Then I poured the contents into a glass jug. Some of them looked a bit queasy when they saw the ugly truth.” Apart from making me feel better – there’s always some poor bugger worse off than you – it got me thinking. Now a spider I can understand not throwing off too much of a flavour, especially once diluted by the old Nescafe 43. But frogs? Merde! (That’s French for something I wouldn’t normally write in my family-friendly blog.) They’re supposed to be a delicacy. Aren’t they? Everyone’s so damn particular about how they have their cuppa – with exact ratios of water to milk to sugar – how the hell could you not know there’s also a good dose of frog in there? Take this as a public service announcement people. Go now and check your kettle. Evidently it need not be cool for long before a little something settles in. Stand up, butt out SMOKING in public near children is outlawed, and for good reason. Greater Bendigo council’s chief executive officer, mayor and other staff members gathered in Hargreaves Mall for a photo shoot this week. While flashes stunned our leaders, four ladies were perched on a seat within metres of FunLoong, having a smoke. These women were blowing smoke across our children’s playground while they played. No one said anything, nor did they take any action. Despite calling on locals to abide, eyebrows were raised when our leaders failed to act. The law, designed to be self-regulating, is hot air if those in power, in our city won’t act. It’s been almost four months
since the State Government laws prohibiting smoking within 10m of playgrounds, public swimming pools, sporting venues at underage events and skate parks were introduced. According to council’s statement, there is not sufficient funds to effectively police the law imposed by the State Government. Council lacks the necessary resources to spread the message, provide adequate signage outside the 10m buffer zone and the staff to police the habit. Funding issues should never come at the cost of our children’s health. It’s a toxic policy if it does. The Victorian Government needs to provide more funding to help councils implement the laws, not just free ‘no smoking’ signs, or
training sessions. Surely, a few dozen $144 onthe-spot-fines and the message would be heard loud and clearly. Frankly, two small signs on a bin within the 10m zone next to FunLoong does not cut it. Rolling out a law without the adequate resources or funding puts our children’s health at risk. It’s not a chance any of us should be willing to take. The government should not gamble with our children’s health and need to properly fund its implementation. Let’s teach them lessons about being healthy and respecting their bodies. We shouldn’t let our children smoke. Passively, now, or in the future. Every cigarette does do damage. Stand up and butt out.
pk A blot on the copybook LOOKING into the rear view mirror with a view to considering future policy is a retrograde step in more ways than one. In the case of corporal punishment, I believe it is so outdated (thankfully) and so out of place in modern society that to suggest or infer its revival might actually be a good thing, does little other than to cast a long and lengthy shadow over anyone who could propose such an idea. So when one of the federal government’s most trusted and most influential advisers on matters relevant to education this week touts corporal punishment as a matter even worthy of consideration, you have to wonder… For me, it’s even more bizarre that someone in such a position of influence as Kevin Donnelly, Kevin Donnelly, as co-chair of the national curriculum review, could mention corporal punishment as having a positive place in the modern education system. I went to an all-boys boarding school for six years
with Peter Kennedy
of secondary education, and it was a place where corporal punishment reigned supreme. It was considered normal to be caned for sitting on a bedspread, or keeping wet footy boots under the bed, or for running in a corridor, just as much as it was for fighting, swearing or skipping class.
outlawed in state schools, although curiously, remains an option for non-government schools in this state. It should not be left to schools to have to discipline children, and parents and carers have a duty to support teachers entrusted with educating children today. All
It was considered normal to be caned for sitting on a bedspread The fear of being caned did help curb the potentially unruly behaviour of some of us, but for others, being caned was like a badge of honour. Often, caning was brutally enforced for no fair or justifiable reason, but as young and scared students, we could do little other than accept our fate, and the cane, albeit with pursed lips and trembling hands. But in more recent times, according to the Law Institute of Victoria, corporal punishment has actually been
parties need to be sure that teaching and learning are provided in an environment that encourages mutual respect and consideration for others. Education is a three-way contract involving the school, the family and the student as the centrepiece. Thankfully, Mr Donnelly’s utterances appear to have found no currency. But it’s a blot on his copybook that will take a long time to fade.

Tayla’d to her needs Sickness is no barrier to a strong woman
T
AYLA has glandular fever. It’s a debilitating virus that can knock you flat. So the story goes she caught it sharing a wine bottle with a friend at a party who had the virus. “What a class act,” her mum said, safely at a distance. The thing is Tayla is a bit of a tigress at the best of times, and the fever has made her worse. As far as her dad’s concerned it’s a bonus, her swollen throat means she can’t talk as much. However, things were a bit bad, and Tayla went to hospital for rest and rehydration. Trouble was, for Tayla and those on the ward, she wasn’t happy. The other patients, who were older ladies, chatted all night and kept Tayla awake. The story goes she yelled at them to shut up, despite the sore throat and the time of night. She was not popular, but didn’t seem to care. The final straw came when the plumbing broke and washing facilities were held up at the hospital. Tayla unplugged herself

from the monitors, kept her drip line in and trundled off to the hospital’s foyer. Tayla’s a vet nurse, so is used to needles and things, and one of the nurses is still smarting from the serve she got as she struggled to get the line into Tayla in the first place. Anyway, Tayla called her mum from the foyer and waited. “I need a bloody shower,” Tayla said by way of explanation. Mum eventually took her home and dad greeted her with a friendly, “so you’ve been expelled then.” Tayla is now ensconced in

snow. But a rage brewed to such extent that it may have to be called off. “I want to go to the snow so you wait until I’m ill before you go, typical,” Tayla said, leaving them in no doubt of her anger. The little spitfire continues to show great strength in her illness and I only wish her the best. Thankfully she’s a few kilometres away, so I should be safe if she reads this. And no, I won’t tell you who let out the secrets, but get well soon. Twitter: @stevekendall1

fold her, bundle her up and forcefully put her in a home. Louise, Golden Square Dear Louise, I don’t think this is a time to be fatuous (this doesn’t mean you are fat but rather silly and foolish). Your mum has every right to stay in her own home. It is her life and her remaining years should be spent in the most agreeable and safe way for her. I suggest you organise some respite so she can get an idea of the advantages of a nursing home, then she will be able to make an informed decision. Secondly if she wants to stay in her home, contact all the services that are available to keep her there, including Meals on Wheels. A phone call to the council will soon give you plenty of information. Thirdly, instead of resenting your mum, I think you will feel much happier if you start loving her. Take her out for treats, shopping, the movies, organise a massage for her. If you don’t feel like doing these things, fake it. You will be surprised at how quickly a superficial attitude can be transformed into real love because of actions. I am now retiring from the pulpit. Twitter: @DearDotty

her bedroom, surrounded by doting boys and issuing orders like an army general. There are horses at home, and like most horse owners Tayla is a bit fussy. Mum has a constant string of orders as the horses need bibs changed and various foods, all orders issued from the bedroom with a flash of blue eyes and attitude. Mum is not the only one bearing the wrath of the sick one. Her poor sister is in strife for all manner of reasons. Seems mum was planning to take the younger girl to the
Dear Dotty, I have a cafe in Bendigo and I feel very disappointed. Now that the cold weather has arrived nobody seems to want to come out at night, what can I do to attract my customers back? Robert, Bendigo Dear Robert, People are amazing aren’t they? It seems they have not heard about coat and scarves and things which are designed to keep them warm and dry when they step out on a cold night. Perhaps if you run a campaign about the advantages of winter woollies rather than the attractions of your restaurant then you might make some progress. Another point. You’re not one of those cafe owners who have their tables on the footpath so people can suck up carbon dioxide along with their spaghetti? Alfresco eating is the province of Europe where piazzas and communal gatherings, sans cars made outdoor dining a pleasure rather than a hazard. And no, I don’t care how many smelly rugs are left lying around or dangerous gas heaters, it’s still too cold to eat outside in this weather. Dear Dotty, I am looking after my mum who is getting increasingly frail. I want her to go to a nursing home but she refuses, I’m finding the situation frustrating. Do you think I should blind-

PRIDE and compassion are just a few of the many qualities which hold the walls of the Bendigo Woodturners together, and why its members keep coming back. But, for woodturner and Bendigo resident Richard Evans, the club gives him more than just enjoyment. For him, it’s a way to give back to the community, and show his gratitude. “I help out, as a way to say thanks to the St John
of God Hospital, who looked after my wife while she was sick,” he said. “They were so good to us.” Mr Evans has donated his time over the past 18 months making wooden birds and crosses for patients in hospital, and dedicates hours daily towards the craft. After Mr Evans’ wife died he decided to give back to the hospital that helped his family. “When I take the wooden birds up to the hospital, the patients’ faces light up,” the wood-
worker of 40 years said. The Bendigo Woodturners club, which now has more than 100 members, is all about giving back to the community. Members regularly donated items for raffle, and offered their expertise to locals who may need help. “All we do is done for free, and is a donation to those who need it,” he said. But, according to Mr Evans, what makes the job so enjoyable, is the people. “It’s really nice to work
with a group of fellas,” he said. “What makes it so great is the companionship between us all. If we’re stuck for ideas, we all step in and help each other out.” Mr Evans said his granddaughters are also interested in woodturning, and attend regularly to help him out. “I really enjoy giving back to St John of God,” he said. “It’s a way for me to give back to the community.”

Ash on the road O
VER the course of Ash Grunwald’s career he’s developed a unique place in the Australian music setting. He’s on tour in Australia until October, including the Golden Vine on August 21. His undeniable foundations in traditional blues music have meant that he’s been able to explore all kinds of musical areas without ever diluting his blues bent nor his credibility. Grunwald has worked with Count Bounce, t.z.u, Mr Trials, Funk Oars, Kram and Urthboy. He’s played on a Pete Murray single and had Rob Hurst, Vika and Lynda Bull, Chris Wilson and Ian Collard on stage as part of his band.
He even did a song with Joe Camilleri once for the ABC. Last year he unashamedly unleashed the rock beast with Scott and Andy from The Living End on their collaborative album. Writing, demoing, rehearsing and just plain ol’ jamming like never before, Grunwald has come back full circle; to the dirgy, stomping solo blues that made him famous as a young, authentic blues musician thundering his way into the hearts of his generation some 10 years ago. Grunwald plays the Golden Vine Hotel, 135 King Street, Bendigo on August 21. Tickets $25 from the venue. Doors open 8pm.

Rockers steam into the region T
HE band Stevenson’s Rocket is building up a head of steam for its tour, taking in Castlemaine and Bendigo. The band formed on New Year’s Eve 2009 as an attempt to emulate Uriah Heap, a 70’s prog-rock band. To their surprise, the music that they were creating was something of quality, so they aspired to form a band; this
STEVENSON’S ROCKET
band being Stevenson’s Rocket. They refined and defined their style and song by sticking random bits of chord progressions, sounds and melodies together and thus the groove had begun. Though their first gig at a battle of the bands in March 2009 wasn’t a huge honking success, the lads persevered and strived to continue their escapades in the music industry.
As more and more humorous and inappropriate ideas passed through the band, the more inspiration was found; their main sources originating from 20th century England and steam punk. Stevenson’s Rocket was alive, and performing more frequent gigs in pubs, at parties and at small festivals (anywhere they could sink their teeth into). As their performances have continued, so has the develop-
ment of the band’s personality. Stevenson’s Rocket is on the scene, with their new sounds that shock and entertain the crowds. Catch them at The Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine tonight with support Paper Boat Armada. Entry $10. Doors 8.30pm. They also have a fundraiser performance for the publishing of the album Cooked In The Fat Of Its Predecessors coming up on August 2 at the Golden Vine Hotel.

foodfossickers Culinary questions with Jody and Brent Loam of the Willow Room, Heathcote Q. What are some tips for roasting duck? A. When roasting duck or chicken I always try leave the bird uncovered in a fridge for at least 24 hours. This will dry out the skin and allow it to crisp better while roasting. Season the whole bird including inside the cavity, you can also stuff the cavity with a cinnamon stick, garlic cloves and thyme. I also squeeze the juice of a lemon and rub this all over the skin then pop the rind in the cavity also. Roast on a high heat to begin with to crisp the skin, then turn down to roast slowly. Always let the bird rest for a while before carving. Q. Should I use a good quality wine for cooking? A. I believe that if your ingredients are of good quality the end product will always be far better. Of course don’t use your best bottle that you have been saving to drink but often cellar doors have great clean skins at cheap prices that are ok for drinking and great to use for cooking. Always cook out the wine or alcohol when using in a recipe. Q. What’s the difference between Hollandaise and Béarnaise? A. Both sauces are an emulsion base sauce of egg yolks and clarified butter served warm to prevent the sauce from splitting if its too hot or setting if its cold. They often have a reduction white wine, vinegar, herbs and spices. Hollandaise is often served on poached eggs, asparagus and fish dishes, while Béarnaise is classically served on steak or grilled meats and has the addition of fresh tarragon.

Festival of the Lamb T
HIS weekend will see a migration of driz-a-bones and RM Williams to Bendigo for the Australian Sheep and Wool Show at the Bendigo Showgrounds. I love sheep. Childhood years spent helping Pa out on the farm with the occasional handrearing of a pet lamb meant I was indoctrinated early into that way of life that still considers the nation to be riding on the back of a sheep. This year our family will be all pulling on our RM Williams and heading out to the show, dreaming of another lifestyle. If you haven’t ventured there, pack up the family and take them. There is something for everyone – sheep dog trials, beautiful sheep, wool and craft. A great day out. It is also about that beautiful product lamb, with great involvement from our local talent showing off the best lamb produce. While everyone can cook a roast, there is a lot more lamb can do, there are also some tricks to cooking lamb. If anyone knows how to cook a forequarter like my Nan used to, let me know. There will be three great ways you can enjoy lamb this weekend. The first option is to head up to the Festival of Lamb tent at the Sheep and Wool Show
to see some of the Bendigo Festival of the Lamb cooking demonstrations. What a great opportunity to learn from some of the gifted chefs we have here on our doorstop. This year’s debutant for the Festival of the Lamb is Brent of the Willow Room at Heathcote, Friday at 11am. Others demonstrating include Justin from The Goldmines Hotel and Nick from Masons. Nick will be demonstrating his dish “pickled lamb shoulder, celeriac puree, moghrabieh, broad beans, heritage carrots and Milawa mustard sauce” on Sunday at 1pm. Justin’s demonstration on Friday and Saturday at 3pm will include a lamb and beer recipe as well as some of his more creative uses of lamb including a lambington and vanilla salted lamb crackle. The second option is to head to one of our local dining establishments for their special Festival of the Lamb dishes. Places including The Brougham Arms, The Woodhouse and Masons have created dishes especially for the event. If that’s not enough choice for you the other option is heading to The Goldmines Hotel on Sunday afternoon.
RAISING THE BAA: Luscious lamb will showcase at the Sheep and Wool show.
As mentioned in last week’s Bendigo Weekly, Sunday afternoon will be a showcase of lamb based food, craft beers and blues and roots music for Ewes, Brews,

HE Australian Sheep and Wool Show is the largest event of its kind in the world. From today to Sunday, the Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association brings together the industry’s entire supply chain from the sheep’s back to the fashion runway and from paddock to plate. With more than 5500 farmers attending, the more than 30,000 public visitors can see where their food and fibre comes from and the latest industry innovations. A record number of Australia’s top sheep breeders will compete for major national competition honours. Competition in this area also gives both experienced and novice crafters the opportunity to display their work. Twice daily fashion parades at 11am and 2pm will display fashion and design, including a special showcase of emerging young designers. BAWCS just loves helping out animals, it’s what we do best! However, having so many mouths to feed and care for can be quite expensive. All you need to do is select the item you’d like to donate, pay at the counter and BAWCS will collect! Too easy!

tuition from the experts. Running with the show is the Bendigo Festival of Lamb. Leading Bendigo chefs, food educators and school students will display the changing take on how to prepare and enjoy lamb, with demonstrations running each day. A true communal atmosphere
YN and Bella are typical of the residents you’ll find at Botanic Village enjoying the convenient and affordable lifestyle for the over 55s community. Despite only moving in recently they already feel right at home and can’t imagine life anywhere else. “I would have moved years ago if I’d realised the advantages of community living in such a setting,” Lyn Philbey said, who moved into the Kangaroo Flat village from Tooborac with Bella, her four legged companion in May. “I live alone, but I certainly don’t feel alone, especially with the recently opened community centre, where I can always pop in to borrow a book from the library or catch a movie in the theatre.” Botanic Village offers residents all the benefits of independent living in a semirural environment with all the advantages of Bendigo’s great facilities. Residents can easily access Lansell Square, shops, restaurants, sporting facilities and medical centres, all within walking distance. And if walking is out of the question, a bus passes the door or resident’s can drive their own car. When completed Botanic Village will consist of 112 units.
“We’ve got another five units presently under way and we can modify floor-plans to suit individual buyers,” operations manager Kaylene Disher said. “We offer all residents an affordable lifestyle which isn’t over the top, and with the village’s swimming pool and bowling green due for completion later this year, we really expect enquiries to increase.“ Compact but spacious two-bedroom units are an affordable $239,000 with
purpose-built facilities, allowing residents to stay close to home. “We aren’t a retirement village, although we envisage most of our residents being retired, it’s a lifestyle village offering fantastic facilities in a convenient location.” Kaylene said. If you’re over 55 and ready to open the door to your new lifstyle, call Botanic Village on 1800 387 637 or visit www.botanicvillage. com.au for further details.

ENDIGO Auto Air is your one-stop-shop for automotive air conditioning, heating and auto electrical service and repairs. Owner Ray Kent has 40 years’ experience in auto electrical work and automotive air conditioning. Ray provides a prompt professional service assisted by his wife Dianne along with help from Zac. With vehicle electrics becoming more complex, it pays to have someone service your car, truck or machinery with a thorough background in all facets of auto electrical work. Ray has the latest in diagnostic equipment for repairing your vehicle and can handle any wiring job or install your new starter, alternator or battery for you. Both Ray and Zac are licensed by the Australian Refrigeration Council and know how important it is to have the
correct refrigerant in your vehicle. They are seeing more and more vehicles that have flammable refrigerant in them, often installed by unlicensed repairers. Ray says not only is this a hazard to you and your vehicle but also to the repairer. At Bendigo Auto Air they identify the refrigerant eliminating any problems that might occur from using the wrong refrigerant. Bendigo Auto Air are licensed to buy and use R134A, the refrigerant used in all cars since 1993. They also stock a large range of air conditioning spare parts, batteries, starter motors and alternators at their workshop. A railway line nearby T
HE area immediately south of A’fok, Fok Sing’s company brickworks and kiln was to be developed as a market garden upon the end of alluvial mining. To reiterate, the kiln is partially buried in Thunder Street about 100 metres to the west of the Bendigo to Eaglehawk railway line. Indications are that the Chinese brick kiln was in use for more than a decade after it had been constructed in 1859. Most local people had forgotten the kiln’s existence, as when in 1942 the tramline was constructed to Emu Point at North Bendigo terminating adjacent to the railway, through this construction work, the kiln was buried when the road was heightened and realigned. There are a number of older members of our community who can remember the Chinese kiln, from the 1930s period, its chimney having already disappeared, in the latter part of the 19th century. For a number of years there had been a strong campaign starting in the early 1870s for the construction of a tramway or railway to Inglewood. Inglewood was a town
which was largely supported by gold mining. The politicians were being lobbied by commercial and other interests to have this new line for transport built, there were many interests in Bendigo too, that could envisage its usefulness. Finally on February 4, 1875 a Castlemaine contractor Thomas Doran had begun the construction of the Inglewood line which would go north through Eaglehawk. Eventually the line was taken right through to Swan Hill. Thomas Doran’s contract price to Inglewood was £78,813. There were to be a number of problems with the Inglewood line which held up the progress of the original timetable for its completion. One of the greatest challenges was the construction of the iron bridge across the Loddon River, in 21 spans with a total length of 171 metres. Eventually the line was finished and the Victorian Governor of the day, Sir George Bowen, had been invited to perform the opening ceremony of the newly completed line. The official party left Spencer Street station
in teeming rain at 9am, on the morning of Friday November 17, 1876. Several stops were made en route to Bendigo, then, another brief stop before the train moved on the new track over the Bendigo Creek past the Chinese market gardens and the Ironbark Chinese Camp. Then the official train was on its way to Eaglehawk, where Sir George Bowen would perform the opening ceremony. As a matter of interest Lake Weeroona was not opened and completed until three years later, in 1879. At Eaglehawk, the mayor of the day, Cr Joseph Harris, welcomed the Governor and official party, after the speeches and the official opening of the line, about 100 guests sat down to a sumptuous luncheon. Toasts were drunk, interspersed with more speeches and general congratulations to contractor Thomas Doran and the resident railway engineer, Mr Green, who had supervised the work. On the western side of the railway line immediately before Thunder Street was the market garden developed and cultivated by Ah Sing.

Ah Sing had secured a lot of manure and other organic material which he had mixed with the gravelly upturned alluvial ground, thus turning this into a very productive patch. Water for the gardens were drawn from the nearby Bendigo Creek. The Bendigo Gas Company, situated close by, had negotiated with the Victorian Railways for a coal siding to be constructed adjacent to Ah Sing’s Market garden. In order for the Gas
Company to get the coal to their works they agreed to the purchase of a small strip of Ah Sing’s land to be utilised for the construction of Bendigo’s only horse drawn tramway, this one for carting coal. To confuse us today, there were several Chinese who had the name or went by the name Ah Sing, there was one who was on the Back Creek he was also a market gardener, were these by chance one and the same?
ORK is under way to restore the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery small timber chapel after the local community rallied to save it. The chapel was marked for demolition early last year following a fire in December 2012, which is believed to have been deliberately lit. The Kangaroo Flat Cemetery was established in the mid 1850s but it is not known when the chapel was built. However, construction details would suggest it could date back to the late 1850s or the 1860s. A community meeting was held after the decision to demolish the building was reported. Volunteers including Gary Hill of the National Trust, builder Leon Beattie and his team, plus two generous donations have resulted in the building being saved, stabilised and repaired. Remembrance Parks’ Peter Goddard has facilitated the project. While there is still a long way to go before the chapel is fully repaired, this is a great example of successful community action. – Megan McDougall

ICHAEL J. Job & Associates is a local accountancy firm specialising in all aspects of accounting and taxation for individuals and micro businesses. Micro businesses are small independently owned entities with few employees. And having fewer employees means that it’s ‘all hands on deck’ for micro business owners. They are often family-run, home based businesses and sometimes that the only employee are the owners. “Australians are hard-working, enterprising people” Michael Job said. “That’s reflected in the number of successful small and micro businesses in the country. Thriving rural cities, like Bendigo, are ideal because there’s a good balance between supply and demand.” That’s why it’s important to engage a specialist like Michael J. Job & Associates to manage your tax affairs and get the best possible tax refund in the shortest possible time. Michael warns clients to take care this year as the Australian Tax Office is targeting work-related expense claims, especially computer and phone expenses, home office claims

and rental property deductions. “The ATO has warned it will be looking closely at claims for a proportion of work-related use of computers, phones and other electronic devices,” Michael said. “If taxpayers are claiming workrelated expense deductions, they must have spent the money, the expenses must be related to their job and they must have a record to prove it. “Also be aware of the deadlines that apply for tax returns. The tax office can charge $170 a month for late lodgement.” The deadline is October 31, for those filing their returns themselves. Those who use a registered tax agent are usually eligible for a later deadline of May 15, 2015. Michael J. Job & Associates are a small team of qualified accountants with years of experience, offering personalised service with on-site or home-office appointments tailored to suit your busy schedule.

I have a sweet, gentle nature although I like to bounce with excitement. I’m going to grow into a large dog so I will require someone with strong leadership skills. I can be a little dominant towards other dogs so obedience training is a must and will be quite enjoyable as I’m still a puppy and havee so much to offer. Please come and see me.

Serving up the games By JOEL PETERSON
OVER two days in April next year, more than 350 Special Olympics athletes from across Victoria will gather in Bendigo to participate in the annual Special Olympics State Summer Games. The Special Olympic State Summer Games is a celebration of athletes with an intellectual disability reaching their personal best in a multi-sport weekend of competition. Sports included in the games include aquatics, athletics, bocce, cricket, equestrian, golf, softball and tennis.
State Games manager Kevin O’Byrne said it is a tremendous achievement for athletes to be selected to represent their local region at the state games each year. “We have 13 regions across Victoria, six country regions and seven metropolitan,” he said. “We try to spread the games over the state and Bendigo was selected as a great venue to host the games. “They are a fairly social event, and despite the obvious elements of competition involved the focus is on participation more than results. “Everyone is participating for a differ-
ent reason and trying to achieve a different goal.” The games’ opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 11 at the Dai Gum San Chinese Precinct and the state dinner will take place at the Bendigo Town Hall. Greater Bendigo councillor Rod Fyffe said the city is delighted to welcome the State Summer Games next year. “This is a terrific event that will bring a lot of athletes and their families to Greater Bendigo,” he said. “It will also showcase some of the great facilities that we have on offer and is a great event for our city to have secured.”
Rangers take a win A DEFENSIVE slog in wet conditions is what Bendigo Dragons were treated to at the weekend when they hosted Croydon Rangers at Tom Flood Sports Centre in week 11 of Gridiron Victoria’s division one season. The Dragons v Rangers clash followed Western Crusaders taking on South Eastern Predators, with the Crusaders running out 13-12 winners. Despite their best efforts, the Dragons could not pull off their sixth win of the season, falling two games behind the Rangers in third spot. The Dragons have the bye this weekend, before tackling top side Monash Warriors in two weeks time. Only four weeks remain in the Gridiron Victoria season, with this year’s VicBowl to be held at Tom Flood Sports Centre.

FC Bendigo juniors show top form THE strong form of FC Bendigo’s junior teams has continued, with three of the club’s six sides taking out victories on the weekend. With a large St Albans travelling contingent heading up the Calder, Bendigo’s under-18s, under 14s and under 13s did not disappoint, all scoring wins. There was no game in the under-15 age group, with St Albans not fielding a side. The under-14s scored the most resounding win of the day, trouncing the visitors 14-0 to notch up the team’s third win of the season. The under-18s defeated St Albans 5-1, the U16s drew 3-3, the U13s defeated the Saints 6-0 and the under-12 sides played out a scoreless draw. FC Bendigo’s under-18 side sits 10th on the table, the under-16s are seventh, the under-15s are eighth, the under-14 side is 10th, while the under-13 side is fourth and the under-12s sit 14th. FC Bendigo operations manager Brock Rogers said the club was more than pleased with how the junior sides have been performing in the club’s inaugural season. “It was a natural progression, we have had a lot of success locally with our Bendigo representative sides, and at the start of the season we hoped that would translate through to FC Bendigo,” he said. “Although it was a quick turnaround to get the club off the ground, it is not surprising at all in some respects to see our junior teams going so well, because we had some of that infrastructure in place. “Our 13s, 15s and 16s are doing very well and are all right up there in their respective competitions, and we hope that with a bit of luck they may be able to take out their titles. “More importantly, I have really enjoyed watching our under-12s and 14s develop. They were the ones we thought may struggle this year and they have acquitted themselves very well.” FC Bendigo’s junior sides take on Avondale Heights this weekend, while the senior side plays St Albans at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve on Saturday night.

The return of Lavey
Battle on for finals From Page 40 “We just need to win more than we lose in the run home to give ourselves a chance, it is as simple as that,” he said this week. “If we can get a win on Saturday, that puts us back inside the top five and would give us some momentum going up against Sandhurst and Storm in coming weeks, who we struggled against early in the season. “I feel as though we are capable against anyone at Dower Park, but we have to worry about Saturday first before we look too far ahead to those games.” Backman Linc Frost, the versatile James Saville and key forward Cam Rinaldi have been integral parts of the ‘Roos improvement this year, but one element of the sides stands head and shoulders above the rest. Ruckman Nick Lang has been oustanding in his return from an injury-affected 2013 campaign, but the young ‘Roos have struggled to make the most of his dominance in the middle. Defensively is where the ‘Roos need to make serious strides in the back end of the season according to their coach, ranking sixth in points conceded at 95.5 per game. Contrast that with Eaglehawk ranking fifth at 79.1 points conceded per contest, and it is easy to see why improved defensive transition is Stevens’ number one goal for his side. “We make it too easy for sides to score against us off turnovers, we have to be able to win the ball back which really comes back to work rate and commitment,” he said. “This week especially, we need to make sure we can be dominant in the clearances and get it down to our forwards, and apply that pressure when sides go the other way on us. “It is a huge game, Eaglehawk are a really solid, well-coached side who have a lot on the line as well, so we won’t have it all our own way. “We’ll have to work for it, and if we work hard enough it might put us in the box seat to play finals.” The BFNL is hosting a multicultural round this weekend, with the showpiece event at the QEO between South Bendigo and Kyneton where the league will have guests from immigrant backgrounds sit with longtime footy fans to learn about the game. AFL Central Victoria also ran a number of initiatives during the week, including a multicultural children’s clinic at North Bendigo recreation Reserve on Thursday. Other games in round 13 see Strathfieldsaye host Castlemaine, Gisborne take on Golden Square in the bulldog battle and Maryborough at home to Sandhurst.

ANOTHER piece of the Bendigo Bank Spirit puzzle has fallen into place for season 2014-15, with rising star Tessa Lavey re-committing to the club this week for the next two years. Lavey, currently playing with the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, came to the club last season after spending time with both Canberra and the AIS. The former Swan Hill junior’s family is based in Bendigo, which provided her with a big reason to stay with the two-time defending champions. The 21-year-old point guard had to sit the majority of the sea-
son behind Kristi Harrower, but showed glimpses of her potential when given a chance on court. “Kristi has been such a fantastic mentor for me, and last year was huge for me as a player,” Lavey said this week. “Kristi is just so smart in the way she plays, and that has been a weakness of mine sometimes, so that was a real focus and she has been great in teaching me that. “It is just such a great group of girls and a great club, my family and now my boyfriend are here, so I’m really excited to be back for the next two seasons and can hopefully continue to improve my game and contribute to the team.” Lavey is highly regarded by
many around the Women’s National Basketball League, including Australian Opals coach Brendan Joyce, who has included Lavey in several Opals camps. “The Opals camps have been great, the opportunity to learn from the best players in the country and some of the best in the world has been fantastic,” Lavey said. “I’m only 21, so even when I’m not making the team with the Opals its just such a good experience and something I can definitely build on going forward.” Spirit coach Bernie Harrower believes the heiress to the team’s point guard throne can make the most of her considerable talent.
“Tessa has such a bright future ahead of her and we’re looking forward to her returning and continuing to improve and develop her game,” Harrower said. “Being a part of an Opals squad when you’re that young is such a great opportunity, and she’s the type of kid that will make the most of it. “We’re looking forward to Tessa taking another step forward for the Spirit this year and showing what she can do at this level.” Lavey joins Belinda Snell, Kelsey Griffin, Sara Blicavs, Gabe Richards, Chelsea Aubry and Heather Oliver as Spirit players who have re-signed through the 2014-15 WNBL season.
Sport teams open door to youngsters TWO of Bendigo’s elite sporting sides have this week called on the local community to get behind the clubs providing a pathway for young players into elite sport. National Premier Leagues club FC Bendigo and two-time WNBL champions Bendigo Spirit this week put out the call to the community to support local teams, after the demise of Bendigo Gold. FC Bendigo operations manager Brock Rogers and Spirit chairman Greg Bickley met on Wednesday to discuss the importance of maintaining local pathways to elite sport. “Junior sport is really critical to the community, and Bendigo is making advances in providing our local kids opportunities to play sport and excel,” Rogers said. “We do need to make sure these are supported by all facets of the community though, so they the providers can be at their best and allow the athletes to be their best as well, no matter what sport it is. “As far as FC Bendigo is con-
cerned, a big reason to set a club up is guys in our senior team like Trent Waterson and Steve Martin who had to move away from Bendigo as juniors to follow their dream. “We want to make sure that kids now do not have to make that sacrifice, and hopefully one day we will have a Bendigo born and bred player in the A-League, in Europe or even in Socceroos colours.” FC Bendigo have a direct pathway through the club’s junior teams in the NPL competition, while the Spirit rely heavily on the junior Bendigo Braves programs for talent development. “It’s great that we have the opportunity to bring international events like the snooker and international netball tests to the city, and have made great inroads in that in recent years and have been very active,” Bickley said. Bickley said despite Bendigo’s stellar track record in hosting and supporting events, local teams needed increased and continued support.
BALL GAMES: Changkuoth Dingkak, Kyle Smith, Jayda Drummond, Mitchell Graham and Zahli Drummond with Brock Rogers and Greg Bickley.

COURT UP: Tessa Lavey has re-signed with the Bendigo Spirit.
KANGAROO Flat coach Jason Stevens said his side needs to string wins together if it is to feature in Bendigo Football Netball League’s finals. The battle for fifth could be settled this weekend, with Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat equal on six wins, but Eaglehawk ahead by virtue of a comfortable percentage advantage. Kyneton are the third challenger in the race for fifth, but sit two games and another large percentage buffer behind the ‘Roos. After claiming the wooden spoon last season, Kangaroo Flat’s 150th has been a revival for the club and has not seen it drop below even in the win-loss columns through 12 rounds. The Borough, on the other hand, have not beaten a side above them on the table, whereas Kangaroo Flat have defeated both Eaglehawk and

Gisborne this season. But while Flat have suffered two 100-point beltings, the Two Blues are yet to be blown off the park, their biggest loss coming in round seven at the hands of Golden Square by 59 points. “It’s a very even competition this year, and that’s a credit to the BFNL and all the clubs, because there really isn’t an easy game,” Stevens said. “We have been a bit inconsistent, but to not have dropped below a .500 winning percentage is certainly a positive for us. “We are still a young group, we have had structural changes and injuries like every club has, but playing consistent footy and putting wins together back to back are keys for us if we want to play finals.” Stevens, in his first year in charge of the Roos, is adamant his side can still play finals despite facing both Sandhurst and Strathfieldsaye in the run home.
