FIELD OF DREAMS: Part of the new-look Rosalind Park, as presented in the draft masterplan. More photos pages 8 - 11.

ROSI FUTURE EXCLUSIVE

By ANTHONY RADFORD

ROSALIND Park is being returned to the public in a dramatic change of policy direction and tradition. The draft Rosalind Park Masterplan, to be unveiled in the coming weeks, recommends ridding the park of most of its car spaces and

creating a series of stunning new lawns and gardens. It proposes returning land currently off limits, to the public and claims back areas that have eaten into the recreation space. The most visible change is behind the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

Under the plan the asphalt and bus parking area will go, replaced with expansive lawns and gardens. There are also plans to relocate the childcare centre from the park, and remove the nearby car parking. Under the draft, the current lawn tennis courts will be replaced

with multi-sport hard courts, and will feature a tree-top level walkway, linking Park Road with the rest of the park. The former baths will be opened up to the public, with a stunning lake, boardwalk and paths the result.

Another dramatic recommendation is the severe reduction in car parking between the Queen Elizabeth Oval and the Bendigo Art Gallery.

REIV Median House Prices

By CHRISTINE MCGINN

GREATER Bendigo has topped the housing-price growth list for Victoria’s main regional cities. Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria data revealed a 7.9 per cent jump in the city’s median house price in the year to the end of June. Greater Geelong recorded at 6.7 per cent jump, Greater Shepparton six per cent and Ballarat recorded only a 3.9 per cent increase. CR Martin Real Estate director Clive Martin said the figures reflected the strong growth in the municipality. “If people want to know where real estate is going, it is still climbing, it is growing. Property is going along quite well and it will keep going, it won’t stop,” he said. “Bendigo is still going to march on at its normal rate. Bendigo still has so much to offer.” Kennington topped the list of suburbs in the municipality with a 21.5 per cent increase in the year. “This figure is exceptional but everyone wants to live in those growth ar-

Two women talk about their very different paths to the same religion

A journey across faiths By CHRISTINE MCGINN

A DEEP purple hijab frames the face of Concepción Ollivier, a Bendigo Muslim woman. For many people she is an anomaly. A Catholic who converted to Islam. A Catholic who is now affectionately known as Aneesa by her Muslim family and friends. With her is her friend Kimberly Amatullah. Kimberly also wears a hijab but unlike Aneesa she had no particular faith when she embraced Islam. “I wasn’t even looking for a religion,” Kimberly says. “I was just looking for a purpose. I was finishing Year 12 in Footscray where we lived and I grew up in a family where there were no aspirations, or conversations about what we wanted to be. It was just about living day-today.” The women stand tall, their eyes are bright as they embrace me, and welcome me as their guest at a favourite cafe. We sink into our seats and their sons dash off to play together. Both women are articulate and poised and open up about their decision to convert to Islam. Their children periodically come up and stare at the stranger who is talking to their mums. Aneesa had longed for a deeper sense of fulfilment after living in

Miami during her 20s and decided to volunteer in Pakistan where the contrast was extraordinary. “I was really impressed because I saw people my age, who were extremely happy, they had very little, but were extremely fulfilled and every moment of their life revolved around the worship and prayer times,” she says.

Born into the Catholic faith, Aneesa said that she had a strong Christian foundation but decided she wanted to worship the God that Jesus prayed to. Two years after converting to Islam, Aneesa married her husband. “When I was getting married, it made it concrete that this was

a long-term decision because my husband was a Muslim and our children would be Muslim,” she says. “Islam is about worshipping God. Worship can be about raising your children, taking care of people around us, being a good host or serving others. It can be charity, these are all forms of wor-

ship. Every part of our life is worship, every minute of the day can have purpose. “Whatever path you choose, if you do it with the intention to serve God with whatever gift or knowledge you have been given, nothing is too petty. It is all important in the grand scheme.” Although it was challenging for her family to accept, Aneesa says they respect and embrace her decision. “It has become our tradition to go each year to see my family in America during the Christmas break, and it is just this wonderful unity of our families. We break bread together, we are Muslims and Christians having a great big feast together,” she says. “The ideas are fundamentally the same, we are all trying to serve God.” Kimberly says her transition to Islam was a very “organic” process. “It was a very spiritual journey because I had a lot of soul searching going on,” she says. Aneesa and Kimberley have respect for other faiths. “We have a lot more in common than people may think. We can live harmoniously together, it increases the bonds we have with each other,” Aneesa says. The women have a profound belief in this commonality that, all people of faith are from the same maker.

Community shows united front By CHRISTINE MCGINN

PEACE: Heri Febriyanto and mosque objector Peter Vanderfenn come together against racism.

BENDIGONIANS have united together against racism and negative attitudes in the community. About 500 locals packed Hargreaves Mall on Saturday as part of the national “Racism. It Stops With Me” campaign to promote a tolerant society. The Australian Human Rights Commission wrote to Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons last month to praise council’s decision to approve Bendigo’s first mosque. Bendigo Islamic Association member Heri Febriyanto said the event celebrated all people, all races and all faiths. “The people of Bendigo are tolerant and respectful with other people and other communities here. I believe Bendigo is an inclusive community, rich with multicul-

turalism and diversity,” he said. East Bendigo resident Peter Vanderfenn, who objects to traffic issues in the mosque’s plans, also went to support the cause. Mr Febriyanto invited Mr Vanderfenn to join in their Ramadan feast on Saturday night. “We gather because it is the holy month of Ramadan, so we are practising our faith, praying and coming together. This means there is a greater spirit of prayer and we are able to share this together,” he said. “We wanted share how very grateful and happy we are to come together and eat after fasting from sunrise to sunset.” Mr Vanderfenn said he felt humbled to be invited to the event. “Heri and I got on very well and he invited me

along. I went to have another chat to the people I had met in the mall,” the Centre State Rodders club member said. “The people were very friendly. I don’t put religion as a prerequisite for people being good people or whatever. I just enjoyed their company for the morning and was only too pleased to celebrate the evening event with them. “I am open to everyone’s religion, everyone can practise what they like.” Mr Febriyanto said they were an inclusive community and were always striving to help all people. “It is important we meet with all people, sit together, allow everyone to have their opinions and listen to each other,” he said. “That way we know what each other wants and we can compromise, we also gain a mutual understanding.”

Kangaroo Flat station pioneer adds weight to push for suburban transport network

Full steam ahead for rail THE man who led the campaign to reopen the Kangaroo Flat railway station believes Bendigo could have its own suburban rail network by Christmas. The Bendigo Weekly revealed last week plans were being put in place for the city to have its own intra-urban train network within a decade. However, Chris Earl believes it could happen a lot sooner than that. “The basic infrastructure is already in place with stations at Kangaroo Flat, Bendigo, and Eaglehawk, with Epsom to come on line next year; and parts of the existing network complete with double tracks and two platforms,” he said. “Currently the infrastructure, that today could cost up to $1 billion to replace, is

used for just a fraction of the time on any given day. “The investment over more than a century is under-utilised, standing empty, when it has the capacity to provide better transport links in a city of more than 100,000 people.” Mr Earl said the Kangaroo Flat station proved the bu-

“It was also the springboard for the concept of a station at Epsom. When opened next year, it will likely prove equally attractive for people living in the northern growth corridor of Epsom and Huntly.” Mr Earl said all it would take would be a stroke of the

Listening to voices of pain IT was cold on Wednesday night, and raining. But a determined group of men and women were steadily making their way into the Bendigo Town Hall to attend the Royal Commission into Institutionalised Responses to Child Abuse. This was essentially an information forum, rather than a hearing, and private sessions had been conducted throughout the day with individuals in discreet settings. Waiting before the forum in the library coffee shop were two women who had been abused as children. One of them, who chose to remain anonymous, was “Anne” who attended St Aidan’s Orphanage. Anne said she was told by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd that her mother was dead. Anne’s mother, however, managed to track her down when she was 47. Her mother died 10 years later. Ten years. That’s all they had. With Anne is “May” who is now in her 70s and suffering from disabilities she gained when put to work in a Ballarat orphanage. “We were young, and had to do hard physical work, our young bones never recovered,” she said. Leonie Sheedy of Care Leavers Australia Network attended the forum with the women for moral support. Leonie

is a familiar figure at the Royal Commission, the biggest ever conducted in Australia. Before the group moved inside the town hall she told me who was likely to attend. “There will be people who are there as a result of sexual abuse, there will be counsellors for those who need help and there will be people from church organisations who are worried they are going to be sued,” she said. While the Royal Commission has been doing an impressive job, Leonie said that many people are getting impatient and old. “Our latest campaign is the National Independent Redress Scheme. The Navy has already organised payouts. Some of our people, people like May here can’t even afford to pay for their own funerals,” she said. “They weren’t educated, they never had the jobs that paid. PLANS are being put in place to have a suburban train network in Bendigo within a decade. The latest round of Greater Bendigo council’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy, and its recently-released draft Economic Development Strategy, have both highlighted the plan.

Suburban rail system ‘within a decade’

The success of the Kangaroo Flat station and the construction of the new Epsom station have inspired planners to think big. The proposal includes building new stations at Huntly, Maiden Gully, Golden Square and Marong. The longer-term vision features

new stations every two kilometres. This would see a station between Marong and Maiden Gully, Maiden Gully and Eaglehawk, Eaglehawk and Bendigo, Epsom and Huntly, as well as a station at Lansell Square and two stations between Bendigo and Epsom.

Top cop backs mosque – Page 3

Council Strategy manager Trevor Budge said the Eaglehawk and Epsom stations already provided options. “If you think about it, Bendigo has, and other cities don’t, an internal rail system that can be used,” he said.

“If we can bring on the business park and Marong (town expansion) in the next five years, once we have Marong to Kangaroo Flat it raises the potential of having a suburban rail system... not relying on the Melbourne to Bendigo system. “If we can have that in 10 years that would be a fantastic achievement.”

pen to have an hourly suburban train route. “Our Bendigo network has the potential to set new highs in the use of rail infrastructure in regional centres across Australia and within compact regions, positively addressing large city CBD congestion and boosting economic development in strategic population hubs,” he said. “As Bendigo grows, the intra-city rail network, too, will grow. That we know where the growth – Marong and Maiden Gully in particular – will come over the next 30 years makes it so easy to reserve land now for new train stations. “There is no need for our great city to wait another decade for an intra-city rail network. We have the tracks, we have the people – all that’s needed is the will of government.”

treated with dignity, now.” Loddon Campaspe Centre Against Sexual Assault executive officer, Michael Beaumont-Connop, who facilitated the information forum, said he was surprised at the large number of people who attended. He believed there were about 100. “It takes people a lot of courage to speak at these occasions. Voices crack, people cry. Royal Commissioner Justice Jennifer Coates’ responses to them were clear and sympathetic,” he said. Mr Beaumont-Connop believes there is a high chance the Royal Commission will return to Bendigo. “I was told the private sessions conducted here could have easily been filled four times over,” he said. “And throughout Australia there are still 2000 people waiting to tell their stories.”

Residents feel they have little say in future actions of council

‘We don’t have influence’ By CHRISTINE MCGINN

MOST locals do not feel they have any ability to influence Greater Bendigo council decisions, according to a new report. Council’s Wellbeing Survey revealed 82 per cent of residents said they did not have the ability to influence council’s decisions. The 2014 report found 48 per cent said they had “no influence” and 34 per cent “a little influence”. Next best – nine per cent – said they had “moderate” ability, eight per cent “didn’t know” and only one per cent felt they had “great influence”. Fewer than 50 per cent of locals thought they “sometimes” had opportunities to have a “real say” on important issues.

About 36 per cent said they did not have opportunities, while 14.2 per cent of residents said they did. Cr Peter Cox said he was not surprised by the findings. “We need to involve people

of meetings and the attendance numbers. “It is still not ingrained in the culture of council to engage the community in council,” he said. “We need to get a diversity of

It is a fundamental process to get people together and involve them from day one right from the beginning to develop the strategy,” he said. “It is a fundamental process to get people together and involve them from day one. “You can’t blame people for saying that they don’t have a say.” Cr Cox said council had made progress with its communications strategy, advertisements, number

views for the best outcome.” But mayor Barry Lyons said residents had “ample opportunity” to be involved in the decision making process. Cr Lyons said residents could participate in consultation meetings, write submissions, attend ward meetings or listening posts. “It is very important for coun-

cil to engage in community consultation,” he said. “Every four years the community elects council to make decisions for them on day-to-day matters, but when council is considering major projects or initiatives we provide residents with a range of opportunities to get involved. “Councillors can also be reached by mobile phone and email, and they would all tell you that they receive many enquiries daily from the general public. As mayor, my door is always open.” Cr Lyons said influence didn’t mean residents would get the result they wanted, but feedback helped to “strike the right balance”. “There are always people who will take a natural interest in

what council is doing and want to involve themselves. However, the challenge is to reach out to all members of the community, young and old. There has been a rise in how we communicate through social media, which has seen us reach more people – the Wellbeing Survey is testament to that,” he said Cr Lyons said there was “always room for improvement”. Cr Cox said council needed to create an annual calendar of events to encourage participation and develop their networks. “All parties have to take a responsibility (to engage),” he said. “Council has been slow to adopt strategies (to engage locals). “We are learning and improving but we have a long way to go.”

Birthday cake is a dessert in the Oasis FOR two decades, Peter Savage has been visiting Strathdale’s first self-serve car wash and helped celebrate its 20th birthday this week. Every day Mr Savage drives his taxi, he visits the car wash. “I am nearby, its a good service and Andrew Brose and his staff are very friendly, very helpful and very obliging,” he said. “I am very particular with what I like, but the regular is a wash, suds, then the car is waxed every day. “Your taxi is your work area, you want to have pride in it and you need to clean it and keep it tidy and hopefully people will enjoy it and respect it. “Bendigo Taxis have a high standard with their vehicles.” The Smicks Car Wash opened on the Condon Street site in July 1994, and the current owners Andrew and Sharon Brose renamed the business to Oasis Car Spa about a decade ago.

“The business has changed and grown over the years from a little business to a much larger business,” Mr Savage said. “It is a pleasure to be part of the birthday celebrations. Andrew and his staff and the previous owners have been very good and helpful to me.” Mr Savage said he enjoyed meeting locals through his work and helping them on their way. Mr Brose said repeat customers had led to the businesses’ longterm success. “We have regular customers who have been coming here since the day the car wash opened,” Mr Brose said. “We believe no one keeps their taxi cleaner inside and out than Peter. He’s been coming here every working day since (it opened) that’s over 5000 visits. “Oasis Car Spa has become an important part of the community to so many people, and it’s great to be part of it.”

ROSALIND PARK MASTER PLAN Rosalind Park now a field of dreams From Page 1

Most parking will be replaced with gardens, the QEO Cottage will be renovated, and advertising boards around the QEO will go. There are also plans to extend the seating and shelters around the outside of the QEO and replace the South Bendigo clubrooms. Sidney Myer Place will be transformed, with the recommended demolition of the telecommunication building and former police station along Bendigo Creek. They will be replaced with more open space, and two large deckings over the creek, between the two existing bridges. The philosophy of returning the precinct to recreation parkland is clear. “Public open space in such close proximity to the centre of a growing regional city is too valuable to be used as cheap and convenient car parking at the expense of public open space,” the report said. “This masterplan recommends car parking on public space within the Rosalind Park Precinct should be reduced over time to levels that are relatively low compared to the existing provision. “Gradually phasing out existing parking provision facilitates the change in park-user behaviour required to achieve this reduction.”

However, the plan stops short of recommending the construction of a multi-storey carpark in the area. Two options are canvassed – under the lawn tennis courts and next to Coliban Water – but neither is recommended. It is believed most of the masterplan committee favoured the tennis court option. The report also recommends opening up the parkland. “What is proposed is an increased quantity and variety of parkland spaces, in and around other uses, to extend a parkland character across the precinct,” it said. “This is to be achieved by activating currently underutilised spaces and relocating out of the precinct land uses that are not appropriate for the highly-valuable public open space in such close proximity to the city centre. “The masterplan identifies a number of sites within the precinct where there are opportunities for land currently off limits to the general public to be converted or returned to parkland.” Another strong focus of the report is the pedestrianisation of the park. A series of walking paths are recommended, as is opening up a direct walking route between the four corners of the precinct.

AFTER BEFORE

Walkway through the treetops THE replacement of the lawn tennis courts and the loss of one bowling rink are two of the more noticeable changes recommended in the draft Rosalind Park Masterplan. The tennis courts will be converted to public open space, and could be replaced with two hard courts, used for a variety of sports.

The plan also features an impressive treetop-level elevated walkway, joining Park Road near Bendigo Senior Secondary College. There is also discussion in the masterplan about building a multistorey car park under the old tennis courts, although it is not given any timeline or priority. The alternative plan

is to create a sunken garden with a playspace. The plan also calls for the creation of an outdoor theatre space opposite the

new theatre. Most of the plans are listed as medium priority, and for actioning over the next 20 years.

Sidney bridges harbour more space THE draft Rosalind Park Masterplan includes expanding what is now Sidney Myer Place. It calls for the removal of the non-heritage buildings – the telecommunications building and the old police station along Bendigo Creek. That would create a large public plaza. The masterplan also calls for the creation of two additional and larger bridges across the creek,

between the two existing historic bridges. Plans include significant tree planting, and the upgrade of Bull Street, to the similar shared-spacestyle asphalt. The report also calls for the reinstatement of the historic Vahland Drinking Fountain. The fountain was originally in Howard Place and was usurped by the Discovery of Gold monument.

The plan suggests placing the fountain at the end of Bull St. All of the proposals have been given medium priority in the masterplan, with rollouts for the trees, Bull St and drinking fountain given a five-year timeframe The pedestrian plaza on the telco site (five to 10 years), the former police station site (10 to 20 years) and the creek decking (10 to 20) have been given longer timeframes.

Carpark rage By ANTHONY RADFORD

GREATER Bendigo council has come under fire for expanding the city’s car parking into Rosalind Park on the eve of the release of the precinct’s masterplan. Work has begun on building 69 new parking spaces at the end of the Tom Flood Centre behind the Golden Dragon Museum. The spaces are part of the planning permit to build the Ulumbarra Theatre in the former gaol. Planning Minister Matthew Guy stepped in to grant the permit after a VCAT challenge highlighting the lack of parking around the theatre. At the time of the Ulumbarra permit, Cr Peter Cox moved a motion urging the council to halt the carpark expansion until the draft Rosalind Park Masterplan was tabled. One of the issues the masterplan is looking at is whether or not to build a carpark under the current

lawn tennis courts near Barnard Street. The current 69-space extension was mentioned in the draft masterplan, but the Bendigo Weekly believes the committee asked for it to be removed. The draft Rosalind Park Masterplan clearly urges a significant reduction in car parking in the precinct. Cr Peter Cox brought up the issue at council’s private forum on Wednesday night. Cr Cox said council was not looking at the tennis court carpark plan with any urgency. “There is not enough urgency to provide an alternative,” he said. “We are simply carrying on allowing additional parking in the Rosalind Park area.” Former mayor Daryl McClure lead the VCAT appeal against the theatre, on parking grounds. He said council should immediately look at the tennis court car park plan and abandon the 69-space

expansion. “This work will complete the conversion of the last remaining piece of open space in the Rosalind Park Reserve to car parking,” he said. “Under the watch of the present council more of the reserve has been converted to car parking than at any other time. “It is a disgrace to think that the council has so little regard for Bendigo’s premier park. “What they are doing flies in the face of the 2004 masterplan and is also in total conflict with the revision of that plan that has just been completed. “It will be interesting to see how the councillors who voted to build another car park are going to wrestle with their consciences when they are asked to consider that concept. “Rosalind Park is steadily being degraded by both bats and carparks. One day the people will regret the way that the vision

of our forefathers has been destroyed.” A council spokesman said the construction of the 69 new car parks is proceeding as approved. “The project has the required approvals from the State Government and there is widespread agreement that the carpark provides the required parking solution for the Ulumbarra Theatre,” he said. “This in no way conflicts with recommendations in the draft Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve Precinct Master Plan. “This draft takes a longterm view of the area’s usage, which might include the eventual construction of a multi-storey car park. “If this eventuates, it would enable the removal of this whole car park, not just those provided for the theatre, and allow the site to be used as parkland.” Mr McClure said the permit does not compel council to build the new car spaces, and all it had to do was change its mind.

ROSALIND PARK MASTER PLAN QEO parking reduction a major goal THE draft Rosalind Park Masterplan recommends some significant changes to the Queen Elizabeth Oval and Poppet Head precinct. The most significant change is the reduction in car parking spaces between the QEO and art gallery. In doing so it gives the QEO Cottage, one of

the city’s oldest buildings, park frontage. The plans push for the creation of an irrigated garden and pedestrian link extension from Gaol Rd. There is a long-term plan to upgrade the Poppet Head viewing platform, including replacing the existing chain mesh

enclosure with a structure that is both more attractive and more sympathetic. The plan also suggests a number of changes and additions to the QEO. It calls for the extension of the bleachers-style seating around the perimeter of the oval, to match the Barnard Street seats. It also recommends building spectator shelter canopies around sections of the oval, and the replacement of the South Bendigo changerooms with a similar-sized building that better addresses the oval. The masterplan also recommends the removal of the advertis-

ing signage around the ground the replacement of the chain mesh and barbed wire fencing with fencing matching what is along the southern boundary. The car park reduction has been listed as a high priority to be done in the next five years, as has the advertising signage removal. The QEO Cottage upgrade has also been given a five-year timeframe, as has the Poppet Head upgrade. The replacement of the South Bendigo clubrooms and the spectator canopies on the QEO have been given a 10 to 20 year timeframe.

THE draft Rosalind Park Masterplan reveals some stunning landscape works around the former municipal baths. It calls for the baths to be opened up to the public and the creation of boardwalks, barbecue shelters, paths, trees and lawn around them. It lists this as a high priority, to be done over the next decade. The plan also calls for the demolition of the swimming

clubrooms, and for an alternative home to be found. It rates that as a high priority to be done in the next 10 years. That would open up the Barnard Street frontage of the area and create spectacular views. The masterplan also calls for the demolition of the former Ladies Pavilion on the bowling club site, which is no longer used.

Expansive lawn plan for bus stop THE most significant and stunning recommendations of the draft Rosalind Park Masterplan focuses around the Tom Flood Sports Centre. While the track, oval and sheds are untouched, its surrounds are hardly recogniseable. The removal of the asphalt and bus exchange has been listed

as a high priority, but it has been acknowledged it could take as long a 20 years. The plan replaces the asphalt with an expansive grassed and treed area. Significantly, it also removes the childcare centre and existing carpark behind it. The removal of the

childcare centre has been listed as a high priority for the next 10 years. The masterplan also calls for the creation of a garden over the historic cemetery site, a site which is currently being turned into 69 car parks. It also creates an impressive staircase and ramp entrance to Bridge Street and the

Chinese Precinct. The plan also highlights the pedestrianisation of Park Rd and the closure of it to normal traffic south of Gaol Rd. The masterplan also reinforces the possibility of a multi-storey car park on private land behind Coliban Water, but fails to make a recommendation.

Arts grant a festival plus THE Australia Council for the Arts has given the Bendigo Writers Festival a $10,000 seal of approval. The festival was awarded funding in the recent literature funding round to help with the costs of bringing writers to the three-day event. “This is an enormous boost for such a new festival,” general manager David Lloyd said. “We hit the ground running in 2012, determined to show what we could do. The Australia Council has so many requests for assistance, we know you have to be good to succeed, so this is really encouraging.”

Huntly history CONGRATULATIONS to the Huntly Historical Society on the publication of their much anticipated “Bendigo to Murray River Railway 1864-2014” book, due to be launched this Sunday. The tireless efforts by the committee have secured grants from both the federal and state governments to promote and preserve the history of Huntly and the surrounding area. Last year, along with Environment Minister Greg Hunt, I was pleased to commit $10,000 towards the cost of publication. This book will make a valuable contribution in preserving not only the history of the subject matter, but also the knowledge that may otherwise be lost, if it were not for the dedication of hard working volunteers. This grant is part of a $1.4 million Community Heritage Grants program to build stronger communities across Australia. In May, the State Government announced a $40,000 grant through Victoria’s Heritage Restoration Fund for roof repair works to the former Huntly Shire Council chambers where the Huntly Historical Society is based. This fund will deliver up to $2.7 million for heritage grants across Victoria. The grant will help preserve the building and enable the society to better protect, store and showcase the historical memorabilia of the local area. I encourage Bendigo residents to support the Huntly Historical Society by attending the book launch event on Sunday, July 27 at 10am at the Huntly Memorial Hall (647 Midland Highway, Huntly). Can the tram plan THE idea of extending tram services in central

Bendigo was put up some time ago (Right Track, Bendigo Weekly, July 18). Back then, I wrote to the then-mayor Lisa Ruffell, voicing my concerns at such a silly costly idea. A fanciful pipe dream! Greater Bendigo council Presentation and Assets director Darren Fuzzard provided a detailed response to the effect, after thorough investigation, the idea was not feasible. The annual operating loss would be in the millions of dollars, not to mention the massive capital cost which was way too high. Senior council officers would not support a re-introduction. A good decision. Rightly, the matter seemed dead and buried. Despite council finding it a dumb idea, details emerge in a recent article, “Tram study to put decades long question to bed”, that the State Government will conduct a feasibility study on the viability of trams as a public transport option in Bendigo. The proposal is “designed to link locals and tourists to key tourism and business destinations” according to Nationals Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum. Seems Damian has the study’s findings. The study will cost $120,000 – $80,000 government, $10,000 Bendigo Trust, and council $30,000 – of our money. Who or what pushed council off the tracks? This tram project appears nowhere in the recently approved council plan or budget. What discussions took place and at what council meeting was our $30,000 approved? Ratepayers should not be forced to contribute one red cent to the study in view of the council’s own research that showed the idea is an unwanted dud. A desperate State Government should also be sanctioned for this political stunt. It should be politely told to stop wasting the peoples’ money. It’s certain it will not wear the

full construction and ongoing operating losses. There are more important projects in the suburbs and rural areas where $120,000 could be put to very good use. Michael McKenzie Bendigo

Mosque support AS a member of the Moonee Valley Interfaith Network and president and founder of the Avondale Heights and East Keilor Residents’ Association, I am writing on behalf of my fellow committee members and myself to express to your mayor and fellow councillors congratulations on their stand in support to your own Muslim residents’ right to build a mosque in Bendigo. For several decades as a strong supporter of Australia as a multicultural nation and for the right of every person to manifest and worship their chosen faith and religion, I believe the level of civility, tolerance and understanding is demonstrated by the way we as a community treat our own citizens and help fulfil, without paternalism, their needs, visions and desires in a new land. How extraordinary it is that Bendigo, as one of the cities in the goldfields triangle, born out of the settlement of thousands of migrant gold diggers of many nationalities, who fought the harsh and feudal colonial leaders for freedom, peaceful coexistence and for the right of all workers, is now turning the clock back to bigotry and hatred for people of different race, culture and religion. As it is a joy and a privilege for us Catholics to attend mass in our many churches, Muslim people in Bendigo and district should have the right to have a place to go to worship that is theirs, and we fully support the establishment of a mosque in your city. mayoral column Mayor’s life is a busy one By CR BARRY LYONS

BEING mayor is busy and rewarding. It is always a pleasure to be included in community celebrations, people’s achievements or lend a hand in raising awareness about important issues. I was pleased to lend my support to the baseball community recently. The Scots and Falcons baseball clubs competed for the first time for the Matthew Lawry Memorial Cup. Matthew died suddenly last year from an asthma attack at age 34. He was a former player for the Scots and a respected clubman, and his friends rallied to create an event in his honour. The day also highlighted the importance of organ donation and discussing it with family and friends, so they know what to do if they had to suddenly decide. There are many people who

do great work in our city in a voluntary capacity. I have been to many changeover dinners in the past few weeks, as organisations like the Lions Club and Rotary farewell one committee or board and welcome another.

Last Saturday, I was proud to see Greater Bendigo come together The importance of volunteering cannot be underestimated and many community groups, organisations and sporting clubs couldn’t be without them. Last Saturday, I was proud to see Greater Bendigo residents come together for a worthy cause. About 500 people took a united stand and pledged not to tolerate racism in our city in

support of the “Racism. It stops with me” campaign. People from different nations and religions came together to send a powerful message, and I would like to thank all those in attendance and anyone who posted their picture on social media using the hashtag #ItStopsWithMeBendigo. Finally, I would like to commend the tourism and major events units and the staff at the Bendigo Art Gallery for continually putting Greater Bendigo on the map. In the past month I have been pleased to announce the city will host several sporting and other events in the coming year. I also opened the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, which attracts more than 30,000 people each year and attended the official launch of Undressed: 350 Years of Fashion in Underwear. Any of the gallery’s exhibitions are always a hit with residents and visitors and I commend the team on another job well done. It is a privilege to attend these events that celebrate our city. A mayor’s life is a busy but rewarding one.

Carpark is linked EVEN a quick look at the draft Rosalind Park Masterplan is enough to appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it. The park is Bendigo’s greatest asset and the draft masterplan is extensive, impressive and, in places, stunning. The philosophy, or the vibe, behind it is also a standout. Ridding the park, for the most part, of cars and trucks has to be applauded. What those vehicles are replaced with – large tracts of parkland, lawn and pathways – is definitely welcome. However, the plan misses out one key recommendation. For the past few years, chatter about building a carpark under the lawn tennis courts has been eating at the edge of public discourse. With the Rosalind Park Masterplan committee sitting over the past year, that talk has crescendoed. And so it should. However, the draft Rosalind Park Masterplan has failed to address the tennis court car park plan. It has mentioned it as an option, as well as a plan to build a multistorey carpark next to Coliban Water.

Supported Residential Care

• 24 hours • 7 days • • Qualified Personal Carers • However, it has not committed to either. The tennis court plan is the right one. Access is easier, it is better positioned and can cater for the new hospital as well as the park. Not committing to the proposal makes the rest of the recommendations in the draft plan almost irrelevant. The push to rid the park of cars and trucks cannot be done without finding an alternative place for them to go. So, without the construction of a new carpark nearby, nothing else

can really happen in the precinct. If Greater Bendigo council baulks at building a carpark under the lawn tennis courts, it is baulking at implementing the entire plan. It may be able to tinker with a few aesthetic changes, but holding back a carpark will delay the improvements and momentum will be lost. So, if the plans revealed in today’s Weekly are worth doing, then the first thing that must be done is committing to the underground car park and pushing our politicians for the funds to make it happen.

Premier Of VictOria, Dr. DeNis NaPthiNe

with Peter Kennedy

As the third largest City in the State, Bendigo has a responsibility for continued population growth under Plan Melbourne and the Regional Growth Plan. With significant government investment in a range of initiatives and the cooperation of key stakeholders, Bendigo has matured into a very desirable living destination.

IN recent weeks, comments have emerged that suggest the media’s continued focus on Bendigo’s proposed mosque only perpetuates the bitterness and anger of objectors. But many local people don’t want the very vocal antimosque campaign to drown out local support, and it’s a

a society becomes engaged, stronger and more relevant. There are some people in Bendigo who may not want a mosque to be built because they object on planning grounds and they believe they stand to be personally impacted on these grounds, should the mosque be built.

I’ve asked people in Shepparton and Mildura for their reaction space many local people feel they need to be in, because if they don’t express their support, then the space will be consumed by others who have an agenda that’s not in keeping with the rest of society. Bigotry is an ugly and divisive element that in any form is unwelcome and should not be tolerated. That which would otherwise divide a community is the very thing that should unite us, because that’s how

And it’s important to note that these people have a right to object and to have their objections considered in an appropriate forum. That’s not bigotry, it’s actually a basic right. In the past two weeks I have been in Mildura and Shepparton, regional cities where a mosque is already established, and where life appears to be continuing without any major hassles, or at least none that could be at-

tributed to the presence of a mosque in either of these cities. I’ve asked local people in both Shepparton and Mildura for their reaction to what has been occurring here in Bendigo as the vocal campaign against the plan to build a mosque in East Bendigo continues to unfold. People simply shrug their shoulders and shake their heads, claiming they do not understand what the great fuss is all about or why Bendigo is potentially any different to their community. So long after the brightly coloured balloons are gone, (and those dreadful black ones), we hope Bendigo is actually a better place for all this, and that the eventual inclusion of a mosque as a place of worship for members of Islamic faith within the local community is something we can all be proud of. Surely no one can argue with that?

EXEMPLAR Health will sponsor the race bibs in the 2014 Bendigo Bank Fun Run 5km event as part of their overall Bendigo Health Foundation commitment. Each race bib contains a computer timing chip as the timing of participants is a crucial part of the run. Professional runners will be able to accurately track their times and fun runners can aim to beat their friends’ or colleagues’ times. The timing equipment is a considerable cost and the strong sponsorship of the race bibs ensures the technology can be used at

the event. About 1000 people participated in last year’s 5km race. Exemplar Health is the consortium contracted to deliver the Bendigo Hospital Project. It is comprised of Capella Capital, Lend Lease, Spotless and Siemens.

THE dangers of alcoholfuelled violence and assaults will be a hot topic next month. For the first time, Bendigo will host the Acquired Brain Injury National Conference, on August 11 and 12. The conference coincides with the National Brain Injury Awareness Week. Two out of every three people acquired their brain injury before turning 25. Locals and professionals are invited to attend the conference with workshops and speakers to suit all interests. Conference committee

Fleeced of life W

Come last Sunday and Gladys was showing all the sign of imminent birth. I was feeling far from well, but on Monday I was informed by the long-suffering Mrs Kendall I had to be on hand despite being home sick. I used the binoculars for a while, but the view was not too clear from the loungeroom. There was nothing for it, rugged up and engine running I sat in the car and watched Gladys go through her motherly duties. I had not seen a normal lamb birth before, so was not sure on the timing. But there was certainly some labour and delivery-like moves from our mum-to-be. I felt as weak as a lamb myself as I went over to Gladys. There in front of me was a beatifully formed, but very dead ram lamb. Gladys looked a bit stunned as I cleaned the lamb’s airways and generally tried to bring it round. No luck there, it must have died during the birth. At this point Gladys came round to her duties and started cleaning, it was her first time and I don’t think she quite knew what to do. I retired to the car, and watched

co-ordinator Rose Miles said the conference would generate debate about the services, access and experiences of people living with ABIs. “There are a lot of people who have an ABI or who work with people with ABIs. The aim of the conference is to help improve the lives of ABI sufferers, their families and their service providers.” Speakers will discuss four key topics; sex and sexuality, restorative justice, belonging to community and meaning and identity. International MC Brett de Hoedt will host the event with Dr Feelgood, Sally Cockburn the major drawcard.

Transitional Services For Youth And Families executive director Tim Feeney, a Slater & Gordon spokesperson, and general practitioner Christine Durham will also discuss ABIs, the effects, and help sufferers reflect on the journey. Brain Injury Australia executive officer Nick Rushworth will also share his knowledge and Public Transport ombudsman Janine Young will discuss the need to close the accessibility gap. Tickets can be bought at the Visitor Information Centre, but people living with an ABI or their carers can apply for a ticket subsidy by calling Carers Support on 1800 068 978.

dear dotty... Dear Dotty, I cannot find my glasses, last week it was my teeth, the week before that it was my hearing aids. and before that my leg. I’m getting very distressed.

There was a glimmer of hope this week in a world of pain HAT a week. There can not be many things as sad and pointless as seeing a Boeing 777 spread across a paddock, its sad contents like rag dolls and jumble. But what is worse is the swaggering trigger-happy separatists stumbling around like fools. It was a week where I questioned a lot. I am not much of a fan of the human race as it is, they/we seem to take great delight in hurting and killing, and even in Bendigo we see hatred of people based on their faith and life. Depressing isn’t it. On the back of all of this I caught a man flu. Now I am sitting at home sulking as I write this, nearly time to go to the doctor to be prodded and poked. Joy. But in among all of this I had a diversion. At the end of last week the lambs started arriving. We only had five pregnant ewes, pets all, and Baa Baa produced twins last week. The last time I spoke about our sheep was a while ago, we had a dud ram last year, but this year we had two across our five girls, they didn’t seem keen at first, but nature took its course.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, July 25, 2014

Valmai Dear Valmai, I reckon the leg that will be the key thing. Find that first and have a look inside it. If there is nothing there at least you’ll be able to get around. So after you find your leg, go for the teeth, glasses, and then your hearing aids in that order, good luck. Dear Dottty, My teenager daughter is asking for more money every day. Clothes, partying, taxis, it all adds up. Kevin

sadly as Gladys cleaned her new born. I needed some good news this week, and waited and watched for the usual twin. Within half an hour Gladys was doing her thing, and at the moment of birth I was out and encouraging her to clean up, which we did together. Airways clear, live ewe lamb,

and mum straight into the finishing touches. I took the photo you see within three minutes of the birth. A new life, in a week of such trauma for so many, gave me a glimmer of hope for something, but it seems the balance is sadly in the negative. Twitter@stevekendall1

Dear Kevin, Deduct her allowance. Buy soy wheatbix and non-fat ice cream. Buy DVDs on sale such as complete Jane Fonda box set. Buy daughter’s clothes from Reject shop and underwear from op shop. Buy frozen, home-brand chicken nuggets and sausage rolls and make daughter eat them. Cut off power during the day, tell her to rug up. Hide the mobile phone and find her a part time job as a chicken catcher. I think she’ll end up leaving home anyway. Dear Dotty, I was outraged when I

went to the opening of the Undressed exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery. There were several half naked women wandering around in their underwear, I tried to cover them up but they said they were being paid to wander around in their undies, what is the world coming to? Gerald Dear Gerald, I suggest you sneak in every day of the exhibition to see if the girls come back. You could talk to them about the benefit of wearing a spencer. Now I didn’t see any spencers at the exhibition. If you don’t have any luck maybe take in a couple of radiators. Get permission from the staff first of course. If radiators aren’t allowed then maybe you can bring in a hair dryer and follow them around to keep them warm. Twitter@DearDotty

Helping business By CHRISTINE MCGINN

LOCAL businesses will be able to tap into the “big four” public sector organisations at a supplier forum next week. Greater Bendigo council will host a session on July 30 to encourage local businesses who want to break in, or who currently, supply goods and services to the public sector. Groundswell Australia owner Danny Wells said he was able to transition his small local business to become a regional supplier to large government organisations. Mr Wells started his company

while completing a landscape and gardening apprenticeship at his family’s nursery. Mr Wells said his business had taken a positive step after gaining advice from a business coach. Groundswell Australia has since grown and secured the “single biggest residential housing development” landscape and maintenance package in the city in 2012. “The forum aims to inspire and inform business owners such as Danny by providing an overview of the capital works program for Coliban Water, VicRoads, City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Health in the coming 12 months,”

organiser Leah Sertori said. “Together, these organisations spend roughly $250 million per annum on materials and services. “If we can increase the percentage of those services sourced from local businesses, the benefits to our local community are tremendous.” The event will run at All Seasons Hotel between 4pm and 6pm, showing local businesses how they take on a larger role in the supply chain. Residents wishing to attend the free event can call 5434 6137 or email j.redwood@bendigo.vic.gov.au to book a seat.

Strong support for new exhibition ALL that glitters is not gold, it is sometimes a pair of men’s undies. Many women attending the gala opening night at the Bendigo Art Gallery last week were particularly taken with a pair of Louise Simmonds glittering underpants. As far as opening nights are concerned this one was all razzle dazzle. Lots of gorgeous people, champagne, food, and of course, the exhibits themselves. Keeping in tone with the evening, Bendigo Art Gallery director Karen Quinlan’s speech was short, playful and sweet. Besides, everyone wanted to continue with the dancing, and watching the cabaret acts. One of these acts included a young woman, wearing a nude coloured body stocking, having underwear painted on her. There was also a bevy of burlesque ladies who roamed the galleries leaving a trail of feathers and perfume in their wake. They did a dance for us but rather than completely

ITH our nights dominated by the beautiful vistas of France, I present Le Tour de Bendigo. First stop: Café Roubaix in Queen St – adjacent to the cycle shop. Of course, with a name like that it promises great things for both the cycling and French fan. Decorated with all sorts of cycling memorabilia (one framed top will remind you Zak Dempster has come a long way since he won the Madison in 2007). Until now, those little croissants, cakes and pastries have been Bendigo’s best-kept secret. Next stop, Bendigo Wholefoods. Pick up some Puy Lentils for the next time you cook a cassoulet at home. The real reason for this visit is to grab some of the Piper Street Food Co’s products – maybe a terrine, some gribiche, parfait or my favourite is the rillettes sold in gorgeous glass jars. From there, of course it has to be lunch at Bouchon. Open for lunch Tuesday to Friday with gorgeous provincial French cuisine. This is definitely not a tour taken from “French Women Don’t Get Fat”. Now, time to move on in Le Tour de Bendigo to Indulge Chocolates in Fountain Court. Mirroring when the tour crossed into Belgium this year we can have a Belgium waffle with chocolate. You may as well grab a couple of Hayley’s chocolates made with Callebaut Belgian

chocolate – I have well tested the caramel de beurre ones. Next off, up Mitchell St to Epicurean to purchase some genuine French cheeses: a Roquefort, a squishy brie and there has even been some Epoisses in stock recently. By this stage you probably feel like just sitting, Paris-style, outside a bistro watching the world go by. Head for Chancery Lane, the rest of the day will be spent at The Dispensary. There is plenty of French inspiration to be had here. Start with the drinks list – champagne, a French aperitif or cocktail – the choice is hard. There are lots of Tourworthy delights – pork and fennel sausages, quail, duck liver parfait, duck, du puy lentils, chevre, café de paris butter, duck fat potatoes. But whatever you do, make sure you have the gnocchi with shaved black winter truffle, burnt butter and sage. By this stage, I think it is time to take a leaf out of the book of the real tour, pretend you are heading back to the team bus and instead head around to see Jodie at Jools for Jim for a tour-worthy massage that should set you right to head home for a night’s real tour viewing. Au revoir.

extra cling film on each side of the lamb. Roll the lamb tightly up in the cling film into a sausage shape using the 10cm extra to tie up each end. Refrigerate for three hours until set. Remove the cling film. Heat a non-stick pan with a little oil and crisp one flat side of the rounds and turn over. Put into a moderate oven for about 10 minutes. The other side will crisp and the centre of the lamb will be hot and soft. Serve with grilled eggplant, cauliflower salad, yoghurt and pickled carrot.

Second album gives Steve a reason to party

Bluegrass in Bendigo K

RISTY Cox is living for the moment. Not only is it the title for her new album, but it is an indicator of her lifestyle. Along the road to glory, Kristy spent some time in Bendigo honing some of her already well-formed talents. It led to a more pronounced bluegrass leaning, which is certainly going well for her now. Kristy is back in Bendigo playing the Goldmines Hotel on August 14, but as the new voice in Australian bluegrass, she is living the dream as a Nashville-based recording artist. Her music has been described as energy infused acoustic country, which is a mouthful, but perhaps good fun describes it too. Kristy was named female vocalist of the year and entertainer of the year at the 2013 Australian Independent Country Music Awards with her last album Miles and

ENDIGO’S Steve Lane and the Autocrats introduced themselves in 2011 with their debut album The Romance Of Communication. Now they are back with their second album, Birds Taking Flight. To celebrate this the band is on tour, including Castlemaine. For this tour, Steve’s son Kai Lane U’Ren replaces Edmondo on bass duties, joining David, Steve and Jimmy Williams on lead guitar. With moments of 70s rock, twanging instrumentals and openhearted ballads, The Romance Of Communication was shortlisted for the Australian Music

Timezones, which also gained two nominations in the 2013 Country Music Awards of Australia; for Best New Talent and Alternative Country Album of the Year. Kristy has stepped it up a notch with her latest release Living for the Moment. The album was recorded at the Crossroad Studios in Arden, North Carolina, with returning producer Jerry Salley. The album features a line up of seasoned acoustic musicians who bring to life the 10 songs, five written by Kristy. Touching on modern country, along with traditional style country. You can see Kristy at her Coming Home Tour with Travis List and Georgia Fall at the Goldmines Hotel, 57 Marong Road, Bendigo 7pm, Thursday, August 14. Tickets are $25, with bookings on 5442 2453.

NDREW and Heather Hampton and their team at William Farmer Funeral Directors offer a caring and professional service to families who need assistance in their time of need. Both their Bendigo and Eaglehawk premises feature chapels and modern reception rooms, with their Eaglehawk premises offering live video-streaming and recording facilities as well as a playground for children. Andrew and Heather Hampton are always available to discuss all your funeral needs and the merits of pre-

planning your funeral. A pre-arranged funeral lets you arrange your funeral to suit your wishes after recording your family details to meet statutory conditions. “In pre-arranging your funeral, you will be assured that all the information required is correct, and your wishes are carried out,” Andrew said. “Prepaid funerals also make good sense. By prepaying your funeral and investing in a funeral bond you take both the financial worry and decision making away from your family at a stressful time.

“You make the decisions for the type of service you would like.” William Farmer Funeral Directors are concerned that advertising regarding funeral insurance can be misleading and recommend thorough research before making a commitment.

EXPERIENCED: Bendigo Funeral’s Simon Mulqueen.

T Bendigo Funerals, Simon and Sue Mulqueen believe in helping families celebrate the lives of loved

ones. Since 1980 Simon Mulqueen, a fifth generation funeral director, has strived to provide Bendigo families with the ability to farewell loved ones in special and meaningful ways. For 20 years, Simon worked side-byside with his father Peter Mulqueen as he learnt and developed his knowledge of the funeral business. Now with almost 35 years of experience, Simon is one of Bendigo’s most experienced funeral directors. In 2012 Simon and his wife Sue, established their own independent funeral company to ensure they could deliver the personal and professional service Simon is renowned for. They provide one of Bendigo’s most modern funeral facilities, which naturally includes a chapel along with ample parking, modern funeral vehicles including gold coloured hearses. A huge leap forward from the drab dark colours used in the 1950s and 60s. Bendigo Funerals was the first local company to offer the Expression Coffin enabling families of the deceased to express themselves with a multitude of innovative designs . “They can Choose from a vast array of designs including Dolphins or Red

Roses to landscape scenes such as the 12 Apostles or the Murray River,” Simon said. “Golf, bowling and football orientated designs are available as well.” These new coffin designs complement Bendigo Funerals’ extensive traditional coffin range. Simon is also a leading authority in the area of pre-paid funerals, having helped develop the model upon which current legislation and the Victorian Government’s Funerals Act is based. Don’t forget your will and powers of attorney

A

N estimated 34,000 people in Bendigo don’t have a will and more than 72,000 are without an enduring power of attorney, according to the latest research from State Trustees. To help empower Victorians to take action, State Trustees has introduced a Planning Ahead Guide, along with a recently launched video series. Information sessions are also regularly hosted by State Trustees, including two upcoming webinars next month

(August 12 and 25) with Bendigo will writer Matthew Scott. Matthew is encouraging people to take the important step of preparing their wills and enduring powers of attorney for financial, medical and lifestyle decisions sooner rather than later. “Making a will is an important part of planning ahead but something that far too many people readily admit to putting off even through key life stages like having children, buying property or getting married,” Matthew said.

“If something happens to you and you don’t have a will, or if you are still alive and you don’t have enduring powers of attorney in place, things can get very complicated at a time that is already difficult for your loved ones. “This is easily avoided with some simple planning sooner rather than later.” Matthew advises clients to include their funeral wishes in their will so they can be considered. “Your executor has ultimate responsibility for funeral arrangements

but will typically consider your wishes as well as those of your family,” Mathew said. “And remember if you die without a will, an estate administrator will be appointed through the courts.”

AGLEHAWK Hire is pleased to offer two additional pieces of earth moving machinery for hire. One is the versatile and compact S70 skid steer loader. Because it is small it can be used around the house or the farm. The S70 (1.3tonne) machine has a 22.5 hp engine which powers a fully hydrostatic 4-wheel drive system. It is easy to load onto a trailer and features a smooth ride, excellent side and front visibility and an easy to read instrument panel. The other piece of machinery for hire that is proving very popular is their Wacker Neuson 1.5 tonne excavator. Described as compact but spacious, the excavator has a cabin with a generous size which gives the operator room to move. This solid piece of equipment is great for digging, laying pipes, trenches or landscaping. As well as the S70 and the excavator,

Eaglehawk Hire has a wide range of other equipment for short or long term hire such as the Dingo Digger, scissor lift and cherry picker. Eaglehawk Hire also supplies portable toilets, ideal for construction sites, parties and festival. As well as with all the tools to get the job done, be it gardening, concreting, earth moving or sanding. Then there’s trailer hire from small open box trailers, to horse floats, tandem trailers and car trailers. They also have an extensive range of products for sale including hand tools, safety equipment, bricklaying and concreting supplies, Nutech paints and sealers and Boral pre-packaged cement and concrete mixes, which are manufactured nationally. UMPING Castles were once the domain of children but not any more, thanks to Bendigo Castle King who have expanded their inflatable realm to cater for all ages. Whether for birthday parties, company functions or promotional events Bendigo Castle King has a range of jumping castles to suit every occasion. “We’ve recently bought two new castles that are sure to be popular,” Bendigo Castle King’s Susan said. “These new castles are ideal for teenagers or for those who want to join in the fun with or without their children.” These new adult sized additions supplement Bendigo Castle King’s existing range of popular children’s castles in a variety of themes.

All Bendigo Castle King jumping castles are industrial strength with all electric motors and leads protected by safety switches. Safety is always a big consideration with Bendigo Castle King instructing all clients in the correct operation procedure. “When someone selects one of our castles, we transport it and set it up showing them how to operate it while explaining all the safety procedures,” Susan said. Castles can be booked for four or eight hours for private or public use – however constant supervision is required when erected for public use. Vegies were king T

HERE were a great number of Chinese market gardeners, spread wherever there was a population of people, which had the potential to become customers for their produce. During the first decade of the goldrush the basic fare for most people was very restricted. The ready supply of mutton was almost guaranteed because of the prevalence of squatters in most localities. To augment the diet, the other staple was flour, which, along with sugar and tea, helped to vary the ways food could be prepared. Damper from the flour, or “Johnny cakes”, with a little mutton fat were the treats of the time. Fruit and vegetables were a distant memory for the majority of the digging population. With the influx of Chinese diggers, they invariably had a more balanced diet with their staple rice, preserved fish and preserved vegetables supplemented with fresh foods. The Chinese drifted back in many instances to their original occupations. As quite a number of them had a rural background they could see the

opportunity to grow food for themselves as well as for others. The patience with which the Chinese diggers pursued the search for alluvial gold was also required in making barren earth productive. Previously I mentioned that the gathering of animal manure and organic material to enrich the soil, would be the first priority for any potential market gardener. We have to remember with the alluvial digging and the puddling operations which were done on an industrial scale, the original soil and subsoil; had already disappeared years before. What was left in the way of dirt was mostly stones and gravel of various aggregates. Water is the essential ingredient to make anything grow and for this reason the creek flats – gullies close to a water source – was a much favoured location for the Chinese to establish their market gardens. An effective way to induce plants to grow well in poor soil was to use liquid manure. Animal manure was collected by the Chinese market gardeners and this would be dissolved in water in large containers,

One of the city’s greats T

his time next year will mark a significant centenary, of a different kind. The architect responsible for many of Bendigo’s most beautiful buildings, including The Capital in View Street and the remodelled Bendigo Town Hall, passed away on July 21, 1915. This was the end of an era for building design in this region, which was a first for its time and has not been seen since in Australian architectural history. Wilhelm Carl Vahland was 26 when he arrived in Melbourne and travelled to Bendigo to try his luck on the goldfields. His diggings did not produce any gold, so he turned his hand to construction and began working as an architect in 1857. Bendigo was then filled with tents and in the process of being formally surveyed for development, but over nearly 60 years Vahland would shape, create and define Bendigo and the region. His work can be found from Castlemaine to Echuca, Dunolly to Serpentine and his achievements are still celebrated and enjoyed today. – Dannielle Orr

TOUGH: The Chinese gardeners used this cultivator to break up the soil for planting. It was pulled by horse. the forehead and fractured his skull. Friends discovered Tunk Can unconscious among the rows of vegetables and had called for an ambulance to take him to the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital Tunk Can was operated on, being in a critical condition. Unfortunately the man did not rally and a week and a half later he died from his injuries. We learn of another market gardener through

the process of the courts. Ah Tin was leasing some land at Myers Creek from Ellen M Spence for his market garden. Ellen wished to evict Ah Tin but because they both did not appear in court the case was dismissed. Invariably, the Chinese market gardeners used mostly the type of tools and equipment that was familiar to them, such as the illustrated harrow located and displayed at the Chinese Joss House.

then the liquid would be decanted into containers much like watering cans, and a small quantity poured on the soil at each individual plant. In 1867, the smell of the liquid manure so carefully and judiciously used by the Chinese gardeners was the source of complaints from neighbours. The smell must have been quite powerful as during the 19th century, olfactory nerves were accustomed to pit toilets, unwashed bodies and occasionally laundered clothes, plus the smell of animals in close proximity to where people were living. The smell of the liquid manure must have been intense. Tunk Can (Sung Can or Tung Can) had a market garden in 1910 not a great distance from the Ironbark Chinese Camp. He had growing a wide variety of vegetables, the appearance of which not only appealed to his many customers but also to a wandering horse. When Tunk Can saw the horse hungrily devouring the delightful greens and carrots he went to shoo the horse from his garden. The horse lashed out and kicked Tunk Can on

Tips to get your tax affairs in order G

RAHAM Watson of Accounting & Management Consultants Propriety Limited offers the following advice for all taxpayers. Work related expenses – ensure that all claims above $300 can be substantiated. The tax office has increased checks and noticed an increasing number of claims that cannot be supported by receipts or other written evidence. Interest and dividend income – many taxpayers are not reporting all of their bank interest and dividends. Financial institutions and companies supply records of all their dividend and interest payments to the ATO which may be cross checked for compliance. Your declared total should include accounts that may have been closed during the year and the apportionment of joint accounts. Interest expense on loans – only interest expense incurred to produce income is deductible. Many taxpayers are claiming this expense even though the loan is for both private and investment purposes. The interest must be apportioned to each activity. Interest expense for an investment home – to claim interest on a loan obtained to purchase a rental property,

the property must be rented or available to rent in the year the deduction is claimed. Allowances – allowances shown on payment summaries must be declared at income question 2: Allowances, Earning, Tips, Director’s fees, etc. Taxpayers are reminded that they are not automatically entitled to a deduction just because they received an allowance. Low income earners may still need to lodge an income tax return. Although your taxable income may under the tax-free threshold you may still need to lodge an income tax return because of; an entitlement to the private health insurance rebate, Pay As You Go Tax withheld from payments received, reportable fringe benefits and/or reportable employer superannuation contributions detailed on PAYG payment summaries. For help on these or any other matters relating to your taxation return Graham Watson, registered tax agent and public accountant will ensure your taxation, accounting and business management issues are accurate in every aspect.

Bendigo Weekly — Friday, July 25, 2014

For the smoothest move C

ENTRAL Victoria Removals have been relocating clients for more than 40 years all over Australia. While many businesses come and go, Central Victoria Removals has stood the test of time. Locals Andrew and Vicky Tierney along with sons Matt and Nick have now owned Central Victoria Removals since 2005 and have worked diligently, to become one of the most respected removals businesses in Central Victoria. Central Victoria Removals are specialists in not only local, interstate and international removals but also business relocations, office relocations and insurance moves. Moving can be a very stressful time especially when you are trusting complete strangers to move your furniture and effects that you have worked so hard to obtain over the years. Thousands of dollars have been spent

purchasing your furniture so the last thing you want is for a removal company to damage your goods in transit. The saying “You get what you pay for” is ever so true in the removal industry. While Central Victoria Removals may not be the cheapest company in Bendigo, the quality and service they offer is second to none. Central Victoria Removals pride themselves on their image and have clean, wellmaintained trucks, as well as uniformed staff that are well presented and experienced removalists. From the very first phone call to when the last piece of furniture is delivered, Andrew or Vicky will be in constant contact to make sure your move goes according to plan. For a free no obligation quote for your next move, phone Andrew or Vicky at Central Victoria Removals on 5448 3399, or call into their depot at 39 Howard Street, Epsom.

Where the friendly and professional staff will pack everything for you. And if you’re wondering how you are going to find the time and energy to clean your place once all the furniture is gone? I’m always on the go! I can be a bit of a handful but with your consistent training & commitment I will become the perfect companion. I will be a large girl when I grow up so I will need a strong, commited owner who can handle me. I will need a large secure yard to play in. They say I have great potential here so why don’t you come and see for yourself.

Footy review to target the region

By JOEL PETERSON

AFTER working heavily on junior structures, coaching programs and with schools, the AFL Central Victoria football commission’s focus is moving toward the ever-changing issue of competition structures. AFL CV, led by region general manager Paul Hamilton, has implemented a number of programs since its inception in 2013. Junior participation and junior coaching have been the two major beneficiaries, with the formation of a local Australian Football Coaches Association and a number of school programs also providing benefits. The next step for AFL CV is implementing a number of changes to junior football, including revitalising the Bendigo Junior Football League under-16 competition and moving the Loddon Valley Football League’s juniors from under-17 to an under-18 competition. “We have put a series of recommendations out to the junior clubs and those leagues, and there are some important things in there,” Hamilton said. “The Loddon Valley will move to under-18s, we are encouraging the Loddon Valley and Heathcote District league clubs to set up affiliations with BFL clubs and we are looking to reinvigorate the under-16 competition. “The main thing with all these decisions is it is okay to make a call and make a decision, but you need to

have the evidence and the research to back them up and show why you are doing it. “We have undertaken a lot of consultation with clubs and listened to as many people as possible throughout the whole process, and not everyone will agree with the decisions, but it is our job to show them why these things should be done.” Over the past two weeks AFL CV

sions are made. “The Maryborough review is a big one for us, it is a troublesome area but also one with great potential. We have sent surveys out and we will interview every single club in that region and look to see what we can do to help the development of the game,” he said. “We are only a smaller player in that review given the two other com-

The clubs up there have some issues at the moment, so that’s what the review is about. has announced two major reviews into football, one in the Maryborough region in conjunction with AFL Goldfields and another in the NorthWest of the state. With the future of football a hot topic in Maryborough over recent seasons, the two commissions will join forces with the Bendigo FL-aligned Maryborough and the Maryborough Castlemaine District League clubs in the region to show the best way forward for the future. AFL CV will also implement a cross-commission initiative with the AFL Central Murray and Wimmera Mallee commissions to dissect the overlap of clubs throughout the North Central, Central Murray and Mallee leagues. Hamilton said both of the reviews will take time and involve a large degree of consultation before any deci-

missions involved are largely based in the area, but we are keen to do a review because if you sit down and look at a map of the clubs in those leagues it doesn’t actually make a lot of sense. “The clubs up there have some issues at the moment, so that’s what the review is about, in terms of looking into the effects that the structures are having on those leagues and clubs.” Hamilton says changes will not be made lightly. “We want to make changes that we think could be of benefit to the game and increase participation, involvement, and how we can make it easier for clubs,” he said. “We aren’t in the business of making change for change’s sake. We are trying to grow the game and these reviews, and the measures we have already implemented, are a big part of that.”

Lavey and Snell earn Opals spots By JOEL PETERSON

THE past two weeks have been possibly the biggest of Tessa Lavey’s young basketball career. A week after re-signing with the Bendigo Spirit for two years, Lavey was this week announced in the Australian Opals team for a tour of Japan that began on Tuesday. Despite struggling to get court time behind legendary point guard Kristi Harrower last year, Opals coach Brendan Joyce has shown enormous faith in the 21-year-old, leading to her selection in the team. Lavey played in 17 games in the Spirit’s title-winning run, and showed extremely encouraging signs towards the latter stages of the season when called upon. Her performances earned her a spot with the Basketball Australia

Centre of Excellence team, where she averaged 14 points, four assists and four rebounds in the her shortened South East Australian Basketball League campaign. She joins Spirit teammate and Opals mainstay Belinda Snell in the 12-player team to play four matches in Japan against the host nation and Mozambique. The tour is a key part of the Opals’ lead-up to the 2014 FIBA World Championships in Turkey in September. In all there are six players in the squad aged 25 or under led by 2012 London Olympians Liz Cambage (22) and Rachel Jarry (22), along with Rebecca Allen (21), Natalie Burton (25), former Spirit player Tess Madgen (23) and Lavey. Joyce said although the opportunity would be valuable for the youngsters, games would not be

given out. “These young players have earned this opportunity through their performance at the training camps and on tour,” Joyce said. “The onus is now on them to take this chance and prove to the coaching staff they deserve to be part of the program at the World Championships.” The Opals squad for the tour of Japan: Rebecca Allen, Natalie Burton, Elizabeth Cambage, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Rachel Jarry, Tessa Lavey, Tess Madgen, Leilani Mitchell, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell and Marianna Tolo. In further good news for the Spirit, the club announced the resigning of young guard Maddie Garrick this week. Garrick has been with the club for the past two seasons, and has played a key role off the bench in the Spirit’s championship seasons.

A big game for Bendigo’s Big V women By JOEL PETERSON

THIS Sunday’s game against Sandringham is do-or-die for the Elgas Bendigo Lady Braves. The team has made it through to the Big V finals series, and face the possibility of being knocked out after finishing third in the regular season. The team participates in the Big V Youth Championship competition, which is the highest tier for under-23 women. Bendigo Basketball Association secretary Craig Green said the team provided a fantastic pathway through to a higher level of competition. “The competition, particularly for the Elgas Young Lady Braves, is a fantastic pathway for players in their basketball careers,” Green said. “Many of the team have taken the court for the senior Champions IGA Lady Braves this season and the competition also provides a

path to even higher honours with WNBL teams such as the Bendigo Bank Spirit.” After the 22-game home-and-away season, the Elgas Young Lady Braves have a season record of 17 wins and five losses compared to Sandringham’s 13-9 record. In their only clash this season on April 12 at Sandringham, the Andrea Walsh-coached Young Lady Braves ran out victors by just one point. State representative Caitlin McLachlan is one of the team’s players to watch, and would be high up in league MVP awards, having aver-

aged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. Captain Elise Strachan is playing her final year in the underage competition and is another of the team’s stars, while Tahnee Cannan is also in her final year for the team and a specialist from outside the three-point arc. “The strength of the team is their reliance on no one individual. You only need to look at the stats and all the players chip in to cover their teammates if someone is down,” Green said. Sunday’s game tips off at 2pm at Bendigo Stadium, and entry is free for all spectators.

WITH both recreational and competitive cycling booming in Bendigo, a local working group has formed a workshop to decide how best to grow the sport into the future. The workshop will look at what’s happening with cycling globally, and share examples and experiences from the Bendigo region. It will feature presentations from Pip Carroll of the innovative grassroots cycling organisation the Squeaky Wheel, and Andrew Talati, cycling social media guru of Bunch Rides. The working group is aiming to maximise Bendigo’s potential as a bicycle-friendly city, both currently and into the future. The “Bendigo A Cycling City” workshop will be held on Thursday, July 31 at the Old Church On The Hill, on the corner of Harkness and Russell streets, Quarry Hill from 7pm.
