BATTLE ROYAL: Apologies to all councillors and Game of Thrones. Graphic: SAMANTHA BARKLA

By CHRISTINE MCGINN

ONE is all about power games, intrigue, wars and battles; the other one is a television series. Greater Bendigo council has deteriorated into a drama rivalling HBO’s Game of Thrones. It all came to a head on Wednesday night, when three councillors – Peter Cox, Elise Chapman and Helen Leach –

walked out. In the height of winter, councillors refused to admit defeat after a heated series of battles surrounding the budget, the draft Rosalind Park Master Plan and the former White Hills landfill. It is a stark reminder of the controversial councils of the first decade of the 2000s, when councillors were constantly at war with each other. On Wednesday night,

councillors first clashed swords about the budget’s six per cent rates rise and the delivery of community services. Cr Cox’s blood boiled when he was denied or “gagged” a fourth speaking extension only listing seven of his 10 cost-saving proposals. He walked out, followed by Cr Chapman and Cr Leach after a late motion about the White Hills tip was lost.

Mayor Barry Lyons said councillors needed to withdraw their swords and pride. “It is poor form, childish stuff and they need to man up because they didn’t win points and move on,” he said. “If you don’t have the stomach for it (council), you shouldn’t be there. “I am disappointed it turned out how it did. “I thought we were more adult than we were, obvious-

ly not.” Cr Lyons said the behaviour was “childish” and “ordinary” in a responsible chamber of local government. “They probably walked out because they weren’t getting their own way and had enough of being defeated with the budget and other two motions,” he said.

Attack dog handed in

By CHRISTINE MCGINN

A VICIOUS dog has been surrendered to council after attacking a woman in North Bendigo on Monday evening. The rottweiler was impounded to Greater Bendigo council officers on Wednesday after speaking with owners about the attack. Eaglehawk resident LizaJane Purtill, aged 44, was attacked outside Bendigo hospital about 6pm. Ms Purtill was putting things in her car, after visiting her seriously ill mother, when she noticed the lady and the dog. “I noticed a smallish looking-lady with a very big

dog walking down Arnold Street. I said, ‘my you have got your hands full’ and she said ‘yes’,” the childcare worker said. Ms Purtill, who has dogs of her own, said she went to say hello to the dog. Reliving the attack in her dreams, Ms Purtill remembers the dog owner cautioned her about talking to the dog, saying it would attack her. But it was too late. “The next thing I know, he has latched onto my arm, pulled me down and along the concrete a bit,” she said. “I knew to drop, play dead, don’t aggravate the dog in any way and basically let him have my arm. “The owner was saying

Busy time for all as festival draws near NEXT week, the Calder has a new name – it’s the Way with Words. Writers and readers from near and far will be heading to Bendigo, to take part in the third annual Bendigo Writers Festival, and The Capital is busy with last-minute preparations. Kirsten Krauth is one of the Castlemaine contingent featuring in the packed program of more than 50 sessions in and around The Capital. She will join other Central Victorian writers, including Alex Miller, Di Dempsey, John Charalambous, Shona Innes, Robert Kenny, Paul Foley, Jenny Valentish and Raimond Gaita, to talk about books, writing, society and life. Kirsten’s new book, Just_a_Girl, is about growing up – too fast – and what happens when there’s too much technology and not enough real care for young people. She also blogs as Wild Colonial Girl and she’ll be reporting on the festival across the August 8 to 10 weekend.

‘let go, let go’.” During the attack she rolled onto her side and out of her jacket, which allowed the dog to take the jacket. Ms Purtill said she took her top off, part of her body “went ‘blonk’” on the footpath before she took herself to the Emergency Department. Ms Purtill told the owner it was an aggressive dog but was told their were no muzzles to fit. “The owner was very sorry, but the dog should have had a muzzle,” she said. She took the dog owner’s details and passed them onto council. Ms Purtill used to work for the City of Geelong in the animal compliance sec-

tion, prosecuting dangerous dogs. She said that training helped her ensure her arm wasn’t ripped off in the attack. Ms Purtill called on people to “stop, drop and act dead” when attacked by a dog. “You can replace clothes, not limbs,” she said. Ms Purcell had plastic surgery on her arm and is expected to be off work for two weeks. Ms Purtill said the dog should be off the street and urged all dog owners to take care and appropriate cautions with their pets in public. Council is continuing with its enquiries.

Day may bring jobs

WRITE ON: Author Kirsten Krauth with festival production manager Helen Morris. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

BY ANTHONY RADFORD

COULD today be the day Bendigo is promised hundreds of new public service jobs? In April the Bendigo Weekly reported speculation the State Government was considering shifting Department of Environment and Primary Industries jobs from Melbourne to Bendigo. But it was only if the government was re-elected in November. Discussions have been going on between the government and Greater Bendigo council about public service jobs and Premier Denis Napthine will be in Bendigo today to make a series of announcements. The Weekly understands up to 400 Department of Environment and Primary Industries jobs could be moved from Melbourne to Bendigo as part of the plan. The jobs could be housed at an extended Epsom DEPI building, although that could also draw criticism. The push to relocate Melbourne public servant jobs to Bendigo is not a new one. In July, 2010, then-Premier John Brumby announced 100 State Trustee jobs would be moving to Bendigo, and they are now below the new multi-storey carpark in Queen St. However, they were not dependent on an election result. Member for Bendigo West Jacinta Allan said any announcement should be taken with a grain of salt. “And even though any new job in Bendigo is welcome, we must remember that Denis Napthine has gutted this department (DEPI), sacking 600 staff and slashing $238 million from its budget making life harder for farmers and land owners,” she said.

“There’s a big, solid core of classic books at this festival, with writers such as Joan Beaumont talking about her book on Australia and the war,” artistic director Rosemary Sorensen said. “But there’s also lots of talk about new ways to write and publish, how creativity can help us all. “We’ve got sessions on blogging, and on the future for journalism, and there’s a big group of La Trobe University students who will be busy across the weekend, using social media to share the festival experience.” Ms Sorensen said this year’s extra support from La Trobe University and the Australia Council for the Arts has shored up the festival’s sustainability. “With Ulumbarra Theatre set to add to Bendigo’s cultural assets, the city is really becoming an excellent focus for events like ours,” she said. “We can, we hope, show our visitors a very good time, because we have such strong and enthusiastic support from our local people.”

Parking a problem

BY ANTHONY RADFORD

ENVIRONMENT Minister Ryan Smith has refused to take a position on whether or not more car parking should creep into Rosalind Park. Work has begin on building 69 new spaces on land at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, as part of the planning permit for the Ulumbarra Theatre. When asked if that part of the park should be for recreation or parking, Mr Smith said: “Rosalind Park is a very important precinct to the Bendigo community”. “I understand that the council has undertaken due process to gain the relevant approval,” he said. Greater Bendigo councillor Peter Cox failed to move two motions at Wednesday’s coun-

cil meeting. The first, to stop the carpark works to allow an investigation into alternative options and to release the draft master plan to the public. “The purpose of the master plan is to protect it not add more carparks to it,” he said. Cr Cox said there were 712 carparks available in the nearby precinct to cater to the maximum 293 demand of the Ulumbarra Theatre. “This new carpark is in direct conflict with the community consultation we have had over the last 18 months,” he said. Cr Helen Leach agreed and said no new carparks could be created. Even Liberal Party Bendigo West candidate Jack Lyons was sympathetic to the cause, urging

Greater Bendigo council to act quickly on the underground car park idea. “At the moment I have to support what they are doing with the 69 car parks,” he said. “However, I would encourage them to look sooner rather than later to get the multi-storey car park moving under the tennis courts. “If you put it in at two levels you probably don’t have to go down too deep. “The car park there would also allow for any inevitable overflow from the hospital.” Cr Cox said council officers had paid no attention to the draft Rosalind Park Master Plan. “The carparking spaces clearly contradict the master plan,” he said. “Council has interfered with due process which is troubling.

ROSI FUTURE Masterplan returns park to the people

EXCLUSIVE

By ANTHONY RADFORD

ROSALIND Park is being returned to the public in a dramatic change of policy direction and tradition. The draft Rosalind Park Masterplan, to be unveiled in the coming weeks, recommends ridding the park of most of its car spaces and

creating a series of stunning new lawns and gardens. It proposes returning land currently off limits, to the public and claims back areas that have eaten into the recreation space. The most visible change is behind the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

Under the plan the asphalt and bus parking area will go, replaced with expansive lawns and gardens. There are also plans to relocate the childcare centre from the park, and remove the nearby car parking. Under the draft, the current lawn tennis courts will be replaced

with multi-sport hard courts, and will feature a tree-top level walkway, linking Park Road with the rest of the park. The former baths will be opened up to the public, with a stunning lake, boardwalk and paths the result.

Another dramatic recommendation is the severe reduction in car parking between the Queen Elizabeth Oval and the Bendigo Art Gallery.

THE National Party will not run a candidate in either Bendigo seat in the November state election. The revelations could be a major boost to the Australian Labor Party. National state director Jenny Hammett said the Nationals did not have any current intentions to run. “We don’t envisage that we will run in Bendigo. We are very focused on our seats where there are retiring members but you never know what happens,” she said. The Nationals recorded a strong result in Bendigo West in 2010. Well-known local Steven Oliver received the second highest number of primary votes, with almost 22 per cent. Mr Oliver turned a 10 per cent safe seat for Labor into a marginal seat with a swing of more than six per cent. In the past two elections, Labor’s margin in Bendigo West has dropped from 17 per cent to three per cent. In Bendigo East, Peter Schwarz attracted only six per cent of the primary vote for the Nationals in 2010. The lack of a Nationals candidate in the area could also have ramifications for the Northern Victoria Upper House seat. There are currently two Liberals, two Labor and one Nationals member representing the region. No Nationals candidates in Bendigo could see the Coalition vote decrease, with a potential for Labor to secure a third spot. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the Nationals had walked away from regional Victoria. “I am not particularly concerned about this decision as I am focused on the constituents and making sure the people have a clear alternative choice and know, Labor is focused on education, health and jobs,” she said. “A lot will depend on who and what parties run in the state election.” Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the National Party had decided not to run in either seat because of the Liberal cuts to regional communities. “The National Party has failed to find anyone in Bendigo prepared to defend Denis Napthine’s Liberal National Government cuts to TAFE, schools and our hospital system,” she said. Bendigo West Liberal Party candidate Jack Lyons said it was too early to tell whether or not having a Nationals candidate would affect his vote. “At the moment it is two to one, with Labor and the Greens against me,” he said. “In 2010 there were nine candidates and there is a long way to go before nominations close. We will wait and see what policies are released between now and the election. “I hope people can see how much money the Coalition Government is spending in Bendigo.”

Although he had concerns about 24 hour trading and the type of food sold, he ap-

proved it on planning. “It is a planning matter and unfortunately the type of business is not taken into consideration by planning authorities,” he said. Cr Rod Campbell said the conditions placed on the development ensured it did not impact on the community and residential area. “I would prefer if they were not 24-hour but as mentioned they will probably be self-regulating,” Cr Helen Leach said. The report to council recommended the use and development of the restaurant, its illuminated signage and the nine metre high illuminated pylon sign.

Muslims mark the end of Ramadam By CHRISTINE MCGINN

MUSLIMS gathered to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr this week to mark the end of the holiest month, Ramadan. About 200 Muslims and non-Muslims gathered together on Monday to celebrate the breaking of fast, give thanks for their blessings and share gifts. Bendigo Islamic Association member Ali Naqvi said the celebrations were the Islamic counterpart to the Christian Easter. “We have been fasting and then we celebrate the end of that, so we have the Eid celebration. Basically it is all about an abundance of food, meeting other people and celebrating the joy and happiness,” the Bendigo local said. “Most importantly (to me), Eid means family, just like any other religious celebration or holiday. “Ramadan has been re-

The Bendigo Weekly revealed the plans in December last year. The restaurant will accommodate 107 patrons with 32 carparks. Cr Chapman said she was surprised for the application to come in around this area. “It’s not all about burgers and fries, there are salads and wraps but I guess they could do a bit more, which would be good for the area and everybody,” she said. “If they get busy enough (for 24 hours) then so be it. I don’t have any problems with it.” According to McDonald’s more than 90 full and part-time jobs will be created.

More than 10 additional car parks can be added in stage two if needed. The entire 3182m2 site will also house a drive through, two waiting bay carparks and six bicycle spaces. The site is opposite the main California Gully shops, including the Whitehorse Hotel and Eliades fish and chip shop. But Cr Lisa Ruffell strongly opposed the development. “Let’s be honest, McDonald’s isn’t healthy,” she said. “It is really disappointing we are supporting it, the area is not the right place. There are far too many fast-food (stores) in Bendigo.”

Budget has thumbs up

By CHRISTINE MCGINN

GREATER Bendigo council approved the 2014-15 budget at this week’s council meeting. Councillors were divided over rates rises and the need to increase and continue services within the community. Mayor Barry Lyons took the lead, noting the budget would deliver $151.5 million for community services and a $62.2m building program. “The budget adopted will help council to achieve its vision of becoming Australia’s most liveable regional city,” Cr Lyons said. “We can now get on with delivering a massive $62.2m capi-

tal and major works program, including completing the magnificent 1000-seat Ulumbarra Theatre, Mitchell Street redevelopment and stage three of the East Bendigo Road Link.” Cr Peter Cox strongly opposed the six per cent rates rise, preferring a four per cent rise. “We don’t have to reduce services but we can find savings. Efficiencies can be made. I don’t believe council has done enough to make these efficiencies,” he said. Cr Cox was refused a fourth speaking extension, only able to list seven of his 10 cost-saving options. Cr Lisa Ruffell said although not every

councillor got what they wanted, they had achieved some things; capital and major works. “If we all got what we wanted, we would be praising the officers and staff, but we don’t always get what we want. So councillors if you are not happy, grow up and try to put your case up again with respect,” she said. Council will spend almost $6m on drainge, $19.53m on major works, $16.03m on roads, bike paths and traffic controls with another $1.90m on public furniture. “We are a growing city and increased cost comes with this. We need to put infrastructure in now for the future ahead,” Cr Ruffell said. Cr Rod Campbell said the budget ensured the city was “moving forward“. “The budget seeks to strike a balance between what is affordable with the need to provide services and infrastructure for our fast growing community,” Cr Lyons said.

Keep active and do some good ENTRIES have begun arriving for the third annual Run For Dad fun run and Run for Dad walk, on Father’s Day, Sunday September 7. The event is part of a full week of activities during Men’s Health Week. By entering online on the Athletics Bendigo website, locals receive a discount compared to entering on the day. Athletics Bendigo members have designed the course and provided much of the volunteer support on the day, along with St John of God hospital.

With the event starting at 9am, organisers have decided to include breakfast in the entry fee, while spectators can also buy their breakfast from the Lions Club at the finish in Dai Gum San. Serious and fun runners have a 6.8km

run while walkers do a 2.5km walk around Rosalind Park. This is suitable for families and children and those not up to a run but who want to take part to support the cause. For the second year running, major sponsor Poyser Motors is providing a minibus to follow the runners and the medallions for each competitor. St John of God hospital’s mission director Denis Byrne said they had a strong community and social outreach focus.

“Events such as this raise awareness and engage with the community in health and wellbeing issues,” he said. Members of the Bendigo Prostate Cancer Support Group will be on hand at the finish to hand out showbags and medallions to all runners and walkers. “The group takes the opportunity to provide health information as well, to men and their families,” Mr Byrne said. Police believe woman can help

POLICE, with Protective Service Officers, are rolling out mobile police stations across the city in a bid to reduce crime. Bendigo Police have set up mobile police stations at the Bendigo train station and other hot-spots across the city. Bendigo Police Senior Sergeant John Dalton said the aim was to deter people from committing crimes or anti-social behaviour. “The idea is to deter people who might be causing trouble. Due to the mobile police station, people are more likely to report it to police,” he said. Anecdotally, Snr Sgt Dalton said shopkeepers were experiencing a significant reduction in the number of crimes committed. “We have seen incidents of thefts from shops reduce and the over presence of police is contributing to this.

FIREARMS are still being stolen from properties across the region. Bendigo Police are asking locals to regularly check their firearms and make sure they are appropriately secured. A 0.22 caliber riffle was stolen from a Romsey property last weekend. Inspector Michael Talbot said a significant number of firearms had been stolen and could be in the hands of criminals. “It is important that people check their firearms and give them the proper consideration and respect they deserve,” he said. “It is concerning the firearms

could be in the hands of criminals.” Insp Talbot encouraged locals to hand in unwanted and unregistered firearms, especially when handling deceased estates. A MAN aged 30 has been charged on summons after allegedly bashing a man after a road rage incident on Wednesday. The male victim sufffered head, arm and leg injuries after an alleged assault on Holdsworth Road about 2.40pm. The man in his 20s, was taken to Bendigo hospital in a “serious but stable condition” after suffering injury from an “implement”. Police were called to Long Gully to search for a man believed to be in possession of a tomahawk. The incident erupted at the Long Gully IGA before spilling onto Holdsworth Road before 3pm. Sergeant Jason Hawke said it had very quickly escalated from road rage. The alleged offender will attend the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court at the later date. POLICE are investigating a number of opportunistic rural burglaries across the the region. Bendigo Police are on the hunt for information about a suspicious dark blue Toyota Corolla in Redesdale over the weekend. A house was burgled last weekend with the vehicle seen acting suspiciously on July 26. Senior Constable Jaime Stubbins said home owners could reduce the chances opportunistic thefts. “This is a warning for people with holiday homes to make sure they look lived in and for them to let their neighbours know when they are away to look out for suspicious behaviour,” he said. Snr Const Stubbins said there could be more unreported burglaries from holiday homes as people do not frequently visit them. Anyone with information should contact the burglary and theft team on 5448 1300. A 17 year old male allegedly in possession of a weapon was arrested in the Bendigo CBD this Monday. Police arrested a dark-haired man about 11.40am after an alleged fight with a group of five men. Police spoke with other youths involved in the incident outside of Officeworks in Hargreaves Mall. Four police cars were in the CBD searching for others involved in the incident. Police interviewed one teenager and have released him on summons to appear in court at a later date.

It is about being in high-risk areas at the right times,” he said. Snr Sgt Dalton said late afternoon and evenings were generally the busiest times at the station due to the increase of people in the area. “We are now in a position to use other ideas and strategies to try to instill confidence into people using the trains and shoppers,” he said. “We are really pleased with how the PSOs are going up there and we have had great feedback from the community and people who feel safer.” Snr Sgt Dalton said the mobile police stations enabled police to report crimes on the spot with a computer and police radio. “The benefit is we can drive to one particular area and the shop is open within minutes,” he said. “This is part of our ongoing mission to reduce anti-social behaviour in the community and we will continue to target hot-spots.”

Banking in hand

BENDIGO and Adelaide Bank has claimed an Australian technology first – a financial transaction enacted by a wearable device. Chief executive of Bendigo subsidiary Community Telco Australia, David Joss, used his Samsung Gear 2 smart watch to buy an afternoon tea in a transaction directed through another Bendigo innovation, a mobile payment system that also credits customers with reward dollars they can redirect to community projects. These innovations are part of a quiet technology revolution being driven by the bank. The bank’s technology advances put it at the forefront of payments innovation – so much so that Samsung recently declared Bendigo to be “at the forefront of payment system developments internationally”. Bendigo has signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung to develop mobile payment systems for the Australian market. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank already has a patent pending for its redy payment system. Launched in June, “redy brings a cutting technology edge to our focus on building communities,” bank Customer Voice executive Marnie Baker said.

“Our bank is built on responding to customer needs and helping its communities to prosper and here we have a device that does both by enabling customers to donate a percentage of the redy transaction fee to the charity or cause of their choosing,” she said. “We are leveraging the power of aggregated micropayments to help communities source new funding streams via a form of crowd funding. ”redy also acts as an effective ‘shop locally’ initiative, retaining capital in local markets rather than see it leaking into internet

sales.” redy is today being extended to provide the ultimate in consumer convenience with a wearable solution on a Samsung watch. “We believe that this is the first time that a bank has released a wearable solution that allows consumers to complete a payment at the point of sale,” Ms Baker said. Ms Baker said Bendigo and Adelaide Bank was “acutely aware” of the changing banking landscape and the need to remain relevant. The transaction was performed at Bendigo busi-

ness and redy merchant The Wholesome Bean. “We believe that we are the first bank to launch a wearable payments solution that fully completes a transaction,” Ms Baker said. The consumer opens the app. The merchant creates a QR code offering the item for the agreed price and the offer is sent to the redy server. The consumer scans the code and their phone tells the server the offer is accepted. The server matches the two pieces of information and completes the transaction.

A tailored way to learn

SIGN ON: Nikki Czarnecki. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

KUMON Bendigo is now open, offering a different way of learning. Originating in the 1950s and founded by a high school maths teacher, the Kumon method is taught in 48 countries world wide. Centre co-ordinator Nikki Czarnecki works one-on-one to develop a tailored program. “Individualising the maths and English programmes to suit every child’s needs is a special feature of the Kumon Method,” she said. Ms Czarnecki has returned to Bendigo after working in Kumon centres around Melbourne. “I feel privileged to be working in partnership with parents and with the support of other educators across this community,” she said. “Parents in the greater Bendigo region are interested in their children’s learning and development

throughout school and beyond.” The Kumon Centre’s after school hours learning programs are designed to fit around busy lives. Ms Czarnecki said achieving strong outcomes in a child’s education takes more than simply focusing on academic skills. “Kumon is about building their confidence,” she said. Ms Czarnecki said the Kumon model can be used as a tool to complement your child’s existing education. “We cover the fundamentals in maths and English while sparking children’s love of learning.” The centre is open to all ages, from preschool learners to young adults. Ms Czarnecki said she is dedicated to ensuring all participants have a positive can-do attitude.

Growing community

THE landscape of cycling is constantly changing across Bendigo and our wider region. There is no doubt there is an increasing community spirit of more people on more bikes more often. We can see quite clearly the demographic of cycling is expanding rapidly. There are no boundaries when it comes to being on human powered two wheels or three. There are different bikes for different disciplines. There are different clothing ranges and styles outside lycra that are just as appropriate and required to get people out on the bike. There are many stories and insights still to share that can add encouragement for others to join this community spirited change for the good of our community. Most in the cycling community have the experience of freedom that cycling can bring and the associated benefits of sharing quality time with family members or likeminded cyclists. All this has been the driving force to chosen to revisit the cycling column along with the fact that hardly a week goes by when a member of the wider community comments about the Cycling with Eddie days. They say how much the

To this end we have been able to secure the commitment of a number of keen cycling enthusiasts who are prepared to share the work load of producing an article every two weeks. These pieces will reflect their experiences, views and that they share with other people in the changing cy-

We hope with this wider community cross-section of cycling experiences, disciplines and views that various perspectives will add useful insights and entertain the reading public. We mostly agree on the many foundational aspects of cycling. Cycling helps the cardiovascular system to remain healthy, reducing the risks of

heart attack and diabetes. It helps weight loss and aids mental health recovery. Cycling has a generally low impact on the body (apart from accidents where the rider inadvertently makes contact with the ground aka “falls off the bike”) giving sustainable freedom of movement Cycling releases endorphins that clear the mind

support groups use cycling as the vehicle to keep people active and engaged. The coffee times are as important as the ride when it comes to being connected. Cycling is inclusive and operates in a very informal way, yet has an etiquette that requires commitment to doing unto others as you would have them do to you. There is a high emphasis on

the safety of the group which comes from individual commitment to the group ethos. We are finding more that cycling breaks down barriers of gender and age. That it provides a place for all and all in the right place when on the bike. We are looking forward, God willing, to what lies ahead. – Eddie Barkla

Is stadium expansion really viable? Has anyone seriously analysed the viability of expanding the Bendigo stadium? This is already a mega complex. How many times a year does it have a capacity crowd? I accept that basketball is popular, and court capacity for local competitions may be lacking, but is there a better alternative to service the youth of Bendigo and encouraging even greater participation? Consider the family in strathfieldsaye with male and female teenagers expressing an interest in the sport, every round trip, whether for training or match play, will involve at least 30 kilometres of travel by car. Compare the travel demand if the facilities were constructed in the local area. Walking or cycling would be the preferred option with no parental commitment. surely a sustainable solution. It is not necessary to have a single site to host a major tournament. a number of cities in Brazil provided venues for the World Cup. Even at a local level the various Country Week competitions use numerous suburban grounds. There may also be a saving in capital cost, consider the cost of renovating, altering and adding to an existing facility with new construction on a greenfield site. Colin C Campbell, Strathfieldsaye

Letters hit the mark CongraTulaTIons stephen Mooney, Bendigo Weekly, July 4 for your exceptional letters in the pages of both the local and national print media. at the local level you are a lone voice, but at the national level you are joined by an ever growing band of people who share your views. People, who like the Bendigo community, have the same concerns at the unfettered expansion of the Islamic ideology and the appeasement policy shown by all levels of government in this country. You rightly point out the locally orchestrated propaganda campaign that vindictively describes to the nation and the world that local citizens opposed to the expansion of Islam in their city are just a bunch of uneducated racist bigots. They are in fact law abiding taxpaying people who are sick and tired of being told it is they who should show tolerance, under-

standing and compassion but not the followers of Islam. Examples of hypocrisy regarding the words tolerance and understanding are found in comments from lisa Chesters and others regarding outside funds influencing people’s opinions in Bendigo. no problem apparently in showing tolerance to outside funding coming into Bendigo to fund the building of the proposed mosque. However there must be no display of tolerance for the funds coming into Bendigo supporting opposition to the project. a very expensive project to give as claimed between two and 300 local Muslims a place to worship. unfortunately, Ms Chesters and other local Islamic sympathisers, the majority of Bendigo’s population are not as easily fooled. D Arscott, Kangaroo Flat

Not the whole picture DIannE Dempsey’s articles regarding the good shepherd nuns at st aidan’s fails to paint the whole picture of their work for the poor of Bendigo. When it was built there was no assistance for orphans and others in trouble and the nuns filled the void. In sandhurst, as it was then known, there were many hundreds of families left without a wage earner because of mining accidents. I saw an advertisement in the newspaper in the 19th century asking for volunteers to come forward to care for the family of four children, including a young baby, whose parents had died. If not for outside assistance the whole family would have died. It was circumstances like these which brought about the establishment of such homes for the poor of Bendigo and Melbourne. My great aunt, Mary o’Keefe, entered the order in 1872 and carried out the work providing services for the poor for about 60 years. Ms Dempsey mentions “anne”, suffering from tuberculosis, sleeping on the verandah. This was normal treatment for TB at the time, even at Heatherton Hospital in Melbourne in the 1950s. Many healthy children also had their bedrooms on outside verandahs. The fresh air even on the frostiest of winter nights was considered to be beneficial. I personally knew two others who lived at abbotsford, one

worked in the laundry and her mother was very grateful for her placement there as she could not manage her at home. also another person of a recently arrived migrant refugee family, without papers, who because of our post-war housing crisis boarded in one of the convents. I think it may be a little hard for people of this era to understand how situations arose and it is almost beyond belief that these nuns kept so many orphans and children in need with little or no financial assistance from the government. They were almost totally reliant on the laundry, child endowments and benefactors, as well as fundraising through raffles and fetes for their means of support. I know of nuns who lived in a state of near starvation themselves because of lack of funding. Mary Healy, Mount Camel

Is money well spent? IT’s fair sometimes to wonder where our council rates disappear, or question if the money is well spent. according to council budget documents total rate revenue in 2012-13 was $64 million. In 2014-15 that figure leaps to $80 million. an extra $16 million taken out of your pockets to be better spent by council; a massive 25 per cent

increase in two years. Council tells us rates increase because the community demands the expenditure and the city is growing rapidly. More on that in the future. It rarely admits duds. In a May 2010 article, “You’ll ‘love’the mall...”, council’s City Futures director stan liacos claimed the Hargreaves Mall completed screens would show films, sports events and art installations. This would attract crowds, boost businesses and show the world how liveable Bendigo was. so imagine crowd and business disappointment when the $1 million big screens in the $8.5 million mall show the same stale static images and no 2014 World Cup soccer games. In the late 2000s council spent at least $1 million upgrading the top floor of the library. It has now gutted that work and spent another $8.5 million. That’s a total of $9.5 million. The gain: a coffee shop, a pit, the smell of new carpet, a lick of paint, and photo opportunities. Could a simple $1 million refurbishment have done, leaving millions for branch libraries in Maiden gully, Epsom and strathfieldsaye? not for us to spend our money or donate it to needy charities; council has greater needs. Booted and booked, council can do better than this. Ted Coleman, Strathfieldsaye

Give the people respect TonY abbott says the greatest threat to the human race is not climate change. For once I agree with you entirely Prime Minister. It is you, amongt others. In hindsight we were too severe on John Howard when we nicknamed him “ back to the future John.” Your thinking borders on the period of the ark. Back home, our hapless treasurer took the extraordinary step of attempting to humiliate everyone on welfare, by indicating that people in the workforce spend a month paying for it. Many people retired, studying, caring, and retrenched have contributed to your honey pot, so your intention to put everybody in the bludger category is obscene. But you omitted one very important statistic. You failed to reveal how much it was costing every man, woman, and child to pay for your and the rest of the political freeloaders dipping their hands in the tax pot. attempting to tell people that this is a fair budget, when the lower end pays a billion dollars more than the top is laughable. Instead of wasting your time talking to right wing organisations that gleefully agree with you, why not give the people some respect and at least attempt to qualify your decisions. The pot boils over The Bendigo Weekly has covered its fair share of Greater Bendigo council conflicts over the years. From the epic battles between Greg Williams and David Jones to the constant frustrations of Daryl McClure as he spoke with senior staff, there has been plenty to write about. For the past two or so years, journalists have been blessed with covering a council that features Peter Cox, elise Chapman and helen Leach. While there was little doubt on election night in 2012 the city was in for a rocky ride, no one could have envisaged what had happened since. Just think about it for a second. We have had the Golden Square pool issue, Fortuna, the Amicus incident, the mosque meeting, numerous investigations, and even legal action. For the most part, council operates effectively. It manages to sensibly pass a heck of a lot of planning recommendations, and well. however, on Wednesday night we saw two years of tensions bubble to the surface. For the past six months, trou-

The majority of six councillors have begun to lose their cool in private meetings with councillors Cox, Leach and Chapman. It has got to the stage now that, unprompted, Weekly journalists are regularly briefed, by councillors, about incidents, behaviour, comments and actions of other councillors. There seems to be, unlike at any time since its inception, a sense of hatred from some Greater Bendigo councillors to others. While for newspapers it makes great copy, for the city and the community it is bad news. Councils of any kind can never

be love-fests, with everyone getting on nicely and playing as a team. That has never happened and it never will. however, we have seen nearby councils in the past ripped about by councillor tension. Geelong, Ballarat and Shepparton are three that quickly come to mind. While we mocked them with the Game of Thrones montage on today’s front page, it is very important councillors get their act together and realise we are in a democracy. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but in the end stability has to be the winner.

pk Uni fees may widen gap with Peter Kennedy

The Federal Government review of the higher education sector is a minefield of potential booby traps and obstacles that could further destabilise a government already languishing in the polls. The government has every right to look closely at how our universities do and do not work, and to seek greater accountability for the billions of taxpayer dollars poured into university education, but if it gets it wrong, the potential fallout could be very expensive both to the government and to Australian families trying to support a family member through university. Any measure that seeks to open up university to more Australians should be applauded, but while most people would think more participants means cheaper fees, the exact opposite may well be the case. The much talked about deregulation of student fees from January 1, 2016, combined with a proposed aver-

age 20 per cent reduction in the government’s payments towards course fees, have the potential to push a university education further away from some. For its part, the government talks up the prospect of competition between universities driving down course

petition will be by how much. As a parent committed to providing the very best education and life options to my children, the scale of the fee increases currently being flung about is daunting. The government would do well to consider the impacts upon middle and lower income families who make significant sacrifices for their children’s education, often with little or no welfare support, and always with a devout commitment to work hard to build a better life for their loved ones. We’re not just talking about policies that cost us a few dollars a week at the bowser, or a couple of bucks more in groceries. This is potentially in the realm of tens of thousands of dollars, and that’s easily enough to make many middle class Australian families think twice about who they believe should be making decisions that affect their lives and those of their children.

HE fitness game has some fallout. I am the laziest most unmotivated exerciser, and it shows, but those who make it part of their lives give me all the excuse I need to abstain. Take sports hack at the Weekly, Joel. He was bounding around the netball court/pitch/arena in full healthy mode when he broke something. He spent the next few weeks hobbling around in a big boot and carrying crutches. He used them too, and he had that grey look of a man in pain. Then came the biggie just last weekend. The big bossman here at the Weekly is a very keen cyclist. Old PK, as we call him, is a regular fitment in the saddle, always geared up for a 100 kilometre ride. It keeps him fit and he obviously enjoys it. Trouble is cyclist versus car never comes out good for the man on the bike, and last weekend PK came a cropper and banged his arm. It is all bandaged, so he

will be off cheque-signing duties for a while, but it’s another indicator of how dangerous keeping fit is. If he had been sitting up home on the Playstation he could be in work without the splints and plaster. But in PK’s case, maybe it’s an age thing. He’s heading pretty close to the magic 50, and perhaps the old bones are getting a bit brittle. I reckon he should be slowing things down a bit and thinking more of his health and safety. shine has been taken off the sport for our man of the bike, but you can bet he’ll be the one who will stick to the old adage of hopping back in the saddle as soon as he can. He doesn’t seem the kind of bloke not to, but maybe we’ll see an increase in hi-vis clothing, flashing lights and flags. To say nothing of the sirens and horns. They say you can’t keep a good man down, and he’s a good man, but I think I’ll leave him to his cycling and only use the road in a car. Besides, I look terrible in lycra (but doesn’t every man?)

I am very annoyed whenever I have to fill in forms which include an honorific such as Ms Miss Mrs. What business is it of some anonymous mindless bureaucrat what my marital status or sex is? Sorry I mean gender. I happen to be single, but that is because I choose to be but implied, in all the form filling out, is the suggestion that I am a dried up spinster. Very annoyed Amber Illustration: “Wildey”

Dear Amber, I bet you have a good time, especially with a name like Amber. And I totally agree with your objection. For all we know these companies could be using the information as part of some data-base building. I‘m surprised they don’t have boxes for skin colour, size of nose, number of teeth etc. Next time you are told to fill in all the boxes, just put Xs in them as in XXXX. I have done this and my letters are addressed to XX Dotty. This is true. Not that everything I write isn’t true.

keep our streets clean and put a ban on this practice. Concerned citizen Ian Dear Ian, They did it with alcohol I don’t see why coffee can’t be banned on the streets as well. Apparently the number of coffee burns is increasing every year. As well our streets are being littered with coffee cartons. There is also a phenomenon known as ADHC - Addicted to Damn Hot Coffee. And as for children starting the day with their skinny flat white cappuccino I think it is ridiculous! When I was a gal, we usually got a glass of water or if we were lucky on pay day a teaspoon of Bonox added to it. Never did me any harm.

Dear Dotty, I am amazed when I drive to work to see the number of people scurrying around carrying take-away coffees with them. Even school children do it. We really need to

The luminosity of art T

HERE is an overwhelming humanity on display in the Bendigo Art Gallery’s latest exhibition, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece. That cold marble can evoke a strong emotional response is the intrigue at the heart of the exhibition. Part of the reason for this emotional response is the subject matter, the range of the depictions of the human body: bodies at rest, bodies at sexual play, young bodies, old bodies and bodies in death. Apart from the content, the actual presentation of the exhibition is crucial in highlighting the sheer beauty of these ancient representations of the human form. Dr Ian Jenkins, the renowned British Museum curator has taken The Body Beautiful to Europe, Asia and America. The is the first time it has been displayed in Australia and its last show before returning to London. “Of all the shows I have curated I think that this is the most successful one,” Dr Jenkins said. “This is the first time the show has been exhibited against a continuous white background and the lighting is brilliant. Karen (Quinlan, gallery director) has surpassed herself.” While the subject matter of ancient Greek antiquity may intimidate some visitors, a lack of knowledge of the era need not preclude them from enjoying the wealth of interest and beauty on display. Statues can been viewed individually such as the glorious centre piece of the Discobolus or the discus thrower, a Roman copy of a the Greek original from about 450 BC. This piece was discovered in Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Italy and was

The limbs and torso are in a stiff, artificial arrangement to represent the Greek ideal of balance and rhythm. “If you see the 1938 Olympics film made by Leni Reifenstahl it is fascinating to see decathlete Erwin Huber recreating the discusthrowing pose. The pose is difficult

to sustain, it is unnatural, you see Huber painfully unraveling himself after the pose.” Dr Jenkins said that the Greeks placed much value in the perfection of human form and that men who trained and who had toned bodies were held in great esteem for achieving perfect bodies. As the centuries move on however, the depiction of faces and bodies became less formulaic and more human. A striking example

is the marble statuette of Socrates who while much loved and admired by his peers, was an ugly man and is depicted as such. The exhibition represents a remarkable insight into the mind of the ancient Greeks, Dr Jenkins said. Rather than seek the answer to the meaning of life, the Greeks were more interested in asking the questions, it was the process of questioning that engaged them. “They were not frustrated or

suffering from existential angst, but rather their joy came from this world, not the one which was to follow, he said. The Body Beautiful can be viewed chronologically or visitors can follow their instincts and go to the pieces that attract them and read the information that is supplied. Whatever approach they use, they will be overwhelmed not only by the humanity but the sheer luminosity of the artwork here.

IOLINIST Stephanie Eldridge now calls Bendigo home. But her passion for accessible music performance and education has enabled her to travel all across Australia. She performs nationally and teaches strings at seven schools across Bendigo and Melbourne, and is an educator with the philanthropically funded Heinz Music Program at Mooroopna. Raised in Nathalia, in the Goulburn Valley, Stephanie started her musical education on the violin aged four. “My passion for music developed as I travelled to music festivals around Australia from age seven,” she said. “I was performing with my cellist sister Annette at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, National Folk Festival Canberra, Yarra Junction and Maldon Folk Festival.” After winning the Australian ‘No holds barred’ Fiddle Championships aged 14, gaining an electric violin for her prize and performing at the Golden Guitar Awards in Tamworth, her passion for a career in music was reaffirmed. “In the same year, I was ac-

O you have the perfect idea for a song but not sure how to put it down on paper? Does a melody play over in your head but your lyrics need work? Adelaide rapper Allday can help. He will be in Bendigo on Saturday as part of the Write on the Fringe Festival. The 21-year-old is making a name for himself on the Australian hip hop scene with smooth melodies and a lyrical flow. Greater Bendigo council’s Youth Participation Officer, Rory White said the Fringe Committee was thrilled to have secured Allday as part of the inaugural Write on the Fringe Festival. Allday will be on hand to talk about the craft of hip hop and song writing. “Allday ’s music is influenced by soul, indie and classic hip hop music, so he is well placed to offer advice on many different musical genres,” Mr White said. “This is an opportunity to learn how to put pen to paper and make your music jump off the page and turn it into reality.” The workshop runs from 11am to 1pm in Activity Room 1 at the Bendigo Library on Hargreaves Street and is for people of all ages.

STEPHANIE ELDRIDGE cepted to the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and moved away from home to rent with university students in Melbourne,” she said. Her commitment to her region was acknowledged in 2004, when she received the Young Citizen of the Year Awards for the Nathalia District as well as the Moira Shire. She continued tertiary studies at the University of Western

Australia and received multiple awards for excellence in chamber music. “After returning to Melbourne, I graduated from the University of Melbourne (BMus) and continued my studies on Baroque violin, between gigs with Melbourne based groups such as Gloriana Choir and La Compania,” she said. Stephanie has also performed with folk bands at festivals and live music venues across Australia.

Recently Stephanie toured regionally with the ensemble New Holland Baroque, which included Bendigo. “I am touring nationally with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and I hope to continue my work with music outreach into Regional Australia. “This is a collaboration with my ballet dancer fiancé Christopher Ead and culture sharing with Indigenous Australians.”

FOOD FIND: The new app will keep you in touch with food.

OOD CONNOISSEURS and hungry visitors will be chuffed with a new food and wine app. Bendigo Regional Tourism launched the Bendigo Region Food and Wine Fossicking app at the Sutton Grange Winery this week. BRT chair Paula Nixon said many producers, cafes and restaurants in the region were responding to the tourism market demands. “Many of our food, wine and cider producers offer cellar door and farm gate experiences now.

“They’re building relationships directly with consumers, and in particular, with visitors,” she said. “This new app places travellers and locals in direct contact with venues and rural properties eager to showcase their wares.” More than 50 restaurants are part of the app with photography, maps, social media links and video clips. The app is a joint project of Greater Bendigo and Loddon Shire councils, Mount

Alexander and Central Goldfields shires. The app got off the ground with a Tourism Victoria grant and the Taste of Gold, Food Fossickers, Bendigo and District Winegrowers and Heathcote Winegrowers assistance. “It’s a great example of what can be achieved when passionate people put their energies together,” Ms Nixon said. Foodies can download the app via the Apple store or Google Play by searching “Bendigo Food n Wine”.

Vegie bags offer a taste of variety T

HERE were some exciting fruit and veg moments at our house this week as I tried two other fruit and veg methods new to me – the Peppergreen Farm weekly fruit and veg bag as well as an avocado subscription. Peppergreen Farm in Thunder Street North Bendigo is Bendigo Access Employment’s home of inclusive employment, providing jobs and skills for a range of Bendigonians with disability. The vegie bags consist of about 10 items, three to five of which are grown

in Mundy Street or from the Peppergreen Farm. Last week’s bag included pistachios from Echuca, red cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, chard from the Peppergreen Farm, beetroot, cherry tomatoes, oranges from Koondrook, apples and pears from Harcourt and button mushrooms from Lockwood. A friend who has moved from Bendigo declares the Peppergreen vegie bag one of the top five things she misses from Bendigo, especially as it is a great way to make sure you (and your

ingredients • 400g Jerusalem atrichokes (washed and thinly sliced) • Eight chestnuts (peeled and roughly chopped) • One cup kale leaves (blanched) • 500ml cream • One sprig of rosemary (chopped) • Two cloves of garlic (peeled and minced finely) • One cup grated pecorino • bread crumbs • salt and pepper • butter method: • Pre heat oven to 190ºc. • Place cream, garlic, rosemary and seasoning into a heavy base pot and bring it to a simmer. Simmer for a couple of minutes to allow the flavours to infuse. • Add the slices of Jerusalem artichoke

and continue to simmer with a lid on until the artichoke is just tender, you want them to be slightly al dente and still hold their shape. Allow to cool slightly. • Rub four individual gratin dishes or one large dish with butter. Pour a layer of the cream mixture into the bottom of the dish and then start to layer the gratin with artichoke, spinach, pecorino, chestnuts and more of the cream. You should be able to do two layers. Finally finish with a layer of bread crumbs. • Put the gratins in the oven for around 15 minutes until the top is nice and golden and the cream is starting to bubble around the sides. At the Willow Room, we serve this dish topped with a poached egg, truffle oil and pickled baby globe artichokes.

ANNE HUGHES: Dental Prosthetist. Photo: GARRY PATERSON

ENTAL health week is not just about natural teeth but your overall oral health. This includes full dentures and partial dentures fitment and care, which can make a difference to your diet as well as enhancing your appearance. “As we get older, health conditions, medications or just aging can cause changes in the condition of your mouth affecting your choices in diet because of an inability to chew properly,” Bendigo Prosthetic Centre and Dental Laboratory’s Anne Hughes said. “Getting your dentures checked and possibly replaced or relined helps you overcome changes that take place with time.” Anne recommends changing your

dentures regularly as dentures usually have a life span of between five and eight years. “Changing your dentures regularly, also means that adapting to a new set of dentures is often easier.” Especially with Anne’s 35 years of extensive experience providing residents of Central Victoria area with quality dentures. “All work is done here on-site with the person seeing you chair-side also constructing or repairing your dentures.” Bendigo Prosthetic Centre and Dental Laboratory provide HICAPS health fund rebates as well constructing mouth guards. Charity made public I

N the 19th and well into the 20th centuries charitable efforts were acknowledged in the newspapers of the day. How much particular people donated to this cause or that, would be regularly published. Today there are a plethora of different charities and when we donate to any of these worthwhile causes, it is in a more anonymous way, we frequently now receive a receipt and the warm moral glow inside is sufficient acknowledgement. The public at large in the past knew who gave what, and when it was donated. The Chinese market gardeners were well aware of the main charities of the day, the Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum. Just like other members of the community, they too could have needed relief from the asylum or even admittance, or similarly to the hospital. When in 1915 market gardeners Louey You and his friend Willie Noan gave a £10 donation to the Bendigo Hospital in time for Christmas, the committee of management immediately made this generous gesture public. These types of charitable donations were also a form of improving public relations between the

Chinese and Caucasian communities. There were many Caucasians who believed that the Chinese were an impost on these charitable institutions. Over time the Bendigo Easter Fair became more and more reliant on the participation of the Chinese in the Easter Parade, as an important part of the fund raising efforts towards the hospital and the asylum. Henry Marks was the long time secretary of the Easter Fair Society, and an influential group of Chinese waited on that committee. The Chinese were led by the following people, Dr James Lamsay, Ah Hoy (O’Hoy) and Ah Poo, they along with some others had presented secretary Marks with £30. The Chinese pointed out to the Easter Fair Committee that they had been much displeased about the negative comments about them which had appeared in the press. Mr Marks assured the Chinese that these comments had not emanated from them and they were well aware of the Chinese sensitivities to any remarks of an unkind nature. The Chinese delegation, were strongly considering their withdrawal

from the parade and their participation in other support. Captain Palmer of the No 1 Fire Brigade mentioned the kindness of the Chinese market gardeners in past years, having donated generous amounts of vegetables and fruit to the fire brigade’s stall previously, which helped to raise much additional monies for the charitable institutions. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union were also active in conducting a refreshment booth at the Easter Fair as their contribution to the fund raising efforts. The women had received wonderful support with a large amount of tea having been donated by Griffiths, pickles and sauces from Leggos. Mrs McCallum the local president of the WCTU was also keen to acknowledge the volume of fruit and vegetables which had been donated by the Chinese market gardeners. Ming Cheong unfortunately was in the news for the wrong reasons. He was a market gardener along the Back Creek (Spring Gully Creek). Ming Cheong was 75 years of age and for some years he had sufferined from a persecution complex. In his troubled state of mind he decided to

WORKING MAN: A Bendigo Chinese market gardener c1890s. commit suicide by hanging himself in his hut in October 1893. Before committing this rash act he had dressed himself in all his clothes, just so that none of his Chinese neighbours would make use of them. Ah Shang was another Back Creek market gardener he was being persecuted and taunted by a couple of young larrikins, Edward Owens and John Hughes. Owens and Hughes demanded Ah Shang give them some watermelons,

when Ah Shang refused to just hand over the melons, they then began to taunt him and assault the gardener, seriously injuring him. This was the result of the stand over bullying tactics used by these louts. Ah Shang took his complaints to the police who prosecuted Owens and Hughes, the two had their day in court both were fined £5 and had to pay court costs. For that fine they could have bought a dray load of melons.

ENDIGO’S golden age was a boom-time for the city – and not just in financial terms. Digging the deep mines of Bendigo required lot s of explosive and fuses, and this meant that tragic blasts both above and below ground were a very common feature of life in the town. Gunpowder explosions were a tragic but common consequence of mining in the town. Gunpowder was very susceptible to ignition from nearby activity. In early 1872 two unfortunate miners were blown 50 metres down a shaft on the New Chum line when a keg of powder next to them ignited. The introduction of dynamite in the early 1870s brought a new set of problems – the material was safer, but this led to less experienced miners being assigned the job of firing. Misuse of percussion caps led to the tragic death of a youngster in 1873, and to pleas that powder-monkeys be properly trained. Above ground was dangerous as well. Explosives were made in Bendigo, and the surviving buildings (those that didn’t blow up) are dotted around Bendigo, and remembered in such street names as Magazine Street in Eaglehawk. – Peter Thompson

Handy tips for a great move W

HETHER it is across the street or across the world, any move is a major event in your life. It can be stressful, physically tiring and financially upsetting, or it can be trouble free when left to a professional you can trust. A professional removalist can minimise the problems associated with any move while allowing you to concentrate on other matters. While removalists usually take the utmost care of your possessions, accidents do happen and that’s why insurance is often a wise option when moving. As part of membership qualification, all Australian Furniture Removalists Association members must have public and legal liability insurance, third party property and motor vehicle insurance. However this doesn’t necessarily cover your possessions in transit. Most reputable removalists should also be able to arrange insurance, designed to cover your household goods. Make sure your removalist can furnish you with a Product Disclosure Statement and a Financial Services Guide as well as answering any questions. If a removalist is unable to do this, they may not be qualified to sell you insurance. No one values possessions more than their owners, so trusting someone else to pack your

belongings is always difficult. Many removalists have been trained in packing, ensuring all items are packed to minimise the risk of breakage. If you’re doing your own packing, remember to check your insurance cover beforehand. Your removalist may even supply packaging material as well, so it pays to ask. Remember to pack your possessions to within five centimetres of the side of the carton to allow cushioning, with crushed paper. Pack heavy items in smaller boxes for easier handling, and use butchers paper instead of newspaper to avoid soiling your possessions. Combine items that go together, and clearly mark the room destination on the top and side of every carton Household appliances – washing machines, stereos, fridges, computers – often need specialist attention. Always refer to the Manufacturer’s instructions for moving an appliance. It is not usually your removalist’s responsibility to prepare these items for removal but feel free to ask for their advice. OVING house is one of the most stressful times in your life. But as far as Graeme Harrison at Allied Pickfords is concerned there’s no reason the process shouldn’t run smoothly provided you choose a reputable carrier. Allied Pickfords Bendigo manager Graeme, his wife Christine and his team go to every effort to ensure that they minimise the stress related to moving house and endeavour to make the process easy. After working in the removals industry in New Zealand and Australia, Graeme calls upon his decades of experience in the industry to make your move stress free. Graeme started with Allied Pickfords in 1994 and together with Christine proudly own and run the Allied Pickfords Bendigo franchise. Together they provide customers with a professional and timely service. “Christine is in charge of administration while I handle logistics and operations,” Graeme said. “We employ a team of fantastic people because in our industry having reliable and trained staff is essential to ongoing success.” Allied Pickfords is the world’s largest

moving company with more than 40 locations across Australia and 600 locations worldwide according to Graeme. Today Allied Pickfords is a quality assured company with ISO 9001 accreditation and a proud history. “Our longevity is backed by proven processes and procedures in place to ensure we deliver on the promises we make,” Graeme said. “Our complete service range includes household, office and relocation services. “We also service corporate, government and retail customers.” Allied Pickfords pride themselves their global values, ensuring the wellbeing of employees and satisfaction of customers. An ongoing investment into IT systems, equipment, safety systems and people are an important part of their vision and values. Allied Pickfords Bendigo and their 10 staff and always strive to ensure complete customer satisfaction. “There’s no ‘I’ in team,” Graeme said. “We all rely heavily on each other to get the job done and are proud of service, history and reputation in the region.” Allied Pickfords Bendigo, phone 5442 5300.

GAN Taylor Accountants and Business Advisors, offer a dynamic and progressive business advisory service lead by Glenn Taylor and Chris Oberin. “We are a client focused and proactive operation that puts the needs of our clients first,” Glenn said. “We offer a range of services including personal and business taxation, GST and BAS preparation, SMSF, rental property advice and small business start ups.” Egan Taylor works with their clients on expanding their business, increasing profitability and cash flow while building financial security to create the lifestyle that their clients desire. “We aim to deliver progressive solutions at every stage of the business cycle to ensure success and profitability,” Chris said. “We regularly use small business benchmarks as a guide to help businesses compare their performance against similar businesses. “Benchmarks are calculated from information reported on the income tax returns and activity statements

of businesses that operate in similar industries.” Glenn and Chris of Egan Taylor say benchmarks are a useful tool to help you meet your tax obligations by: Obtaining guidance on what we normally expect to see in business reporting. Comparing your business with others in your industry. Working out if you need to adjust your business and record-keeping practices. Assessing whether your business is at risk of an audit. “There may be reasons why a business may appear to be outside their benchmark as they may have higher costs or lower selling prices than other businesses in their industry,” Glenn said. “Being outside benchmarks, may also indicate that a business may not be recording, reporting or paying tax on all transactions, especially cash transactions.”

Game on for stadium By JOEL PETERSON

IN a major step forward for one of Bendigo’s biggest projects, the draft master plan for the Bendigo Stadium redevelopment was released this week. The draft master plan went before council on Wednesday night and has been released for community comment for 21 days. The bulk of the proposed works will be completed in stage one of the redevelopment, costing an estimated $16 million. The main feature of the proposed redevelopment is a 3000 seat show court precinct, in conjunction with the stadium’s existing seven indoor courts. The new precinct, to be situated in the current location of the majority of the stadium’s netball courts, will provide three new indoor hardwood courts with expandable seating to form one show court.

The new show court will allow the stadium to keep hosting major sporting events such as the WNBL grand final, as well as large concerts and conferences. Greater Bendigo council decided on Wednesday night to put the master plan out to the community for consultation, with council noting that the plan is not finalised. “It’s a great master plan. I urge council to support this because it’s going out to get comment from the community,” Cr Lisa Ruffell said. The new stadium will also provide flexible configuration for concerts, conferences and other major events, as well as the potential for future expansion to a 4000 seat arena-style facility. The outdoor netball facilities will also be redeveloped, with a redesigned court layout providing 12 courts. A new netball administration centre will also be built under the

plan, as well as increased access to change rooms, toilets and indoor courts. A reconfiguration and expansion of the stadium’s parking and access roads and upgrades to amenities and change rooms are also key pillars in stage one of the recommended works There are also plans for future expansion to the stadium’s function space as well as a possible sports administration hub and upgraded sky lounge facilities, areas which were identified as needing improvement in user group surveys. A potential synthetic sports surface as well as a feasibility study for an indoor precinct with lawn bowls, squash and roller derby facilities have also been noted in the draft plan. The plan will go before council again later this year before the planning process begins for its construction.

HUNDREDS of fleet-footed Futsal players will head to Bendigo in late September for the 2014 Australian Schools Futsal Championships. The indoor soccer tournament will be held in both Bendigo and Ballarat from September 28 until August 3, with age groups from under-10 to under-19 boys and girls competing. Teams from all over Australia will converge on venues in both cities, with the championships doubling as national selection trials for international competition. Ballarat Futsal announced on Tuesday via its facebook page that it and Bendigo Futsal, along with the Australian Futsal Association, had entered into an official partnership ahead of the tournament to strengthen the game in regional Victoria. “Country Futsal is going from strength to strength and we welcome Bendigo on board starting with their school futsal championships which coincidentally are on this Thursday. What a great way to celebrate the affiliation,” AFA regional co-ordinator Corey Smith said. “AFA will be holding the National School Championships there in late September.

“The main positive from a holistic viewpoint is that both regions are very close and it creates endless opportunities for players and extends our player base for representative squads and tournaments to ensure top level competition in the country is achievable.” Greater Bendigo council also announced this week the city would host a range of events, including a new pro-am tournament at Neangar Park Golf Club. The Bendigo Stadium will host two new Basketball Country Vic Championships – the Under 12’s Future Stars Championships and the Under 16/18 Division three and four championships – for the next two years. “Winning the Under 12 event is a great result for the Bendigo Stadium and City of Greater Bendigo,” Bendigo Stadium manager of sport Craig Green said. “With such large attendances at these events last year’s host Traralgon have estimated that the event injected about $2 million into their local economy. “Hosting this event is important as it’s the first representative tournament for many young basketballers and the extended family usually comes to watch and support the players.” – Joel Peterson

Work starts on park redevelopment THE famous grandstand at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park is in the process of redevelopment, after the tender for the work was awarded to Nicholson Construction this week. Nicholson is also completing the work that has already started as part of the $6.2million project When completed, the $920,000 upgrade to the grandstand will feature larger rooms for the away team and increased massage and strapping rooms. The new social pavilion will also feature home team and umpires rooms. The stand will remain open to the public for Eaglehawk’s

final home match of the 2014 Bendigo Football Netball League season against Golden Square on Saturday, August 9, before works begin. Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said Nicholson won the tender based on value for money as well as merit. “Although it is ideal to have one company overseeing an entire project, Nicholson were also able to demonstrate excellent experience with works of a similar nature, knowledge of working with heritage buildings, were competitively priced and offered a suitable timeframe to complete the works,” he said.

A shipping container has been moved on-site and Nicholson will install temporary change rooms and amenities for the Two Blues’ home finale against the Bulldogs next weekend. The project is expected to be completed in December. “This is an exciting next step in the overall redevelopment of the Canterbury Park Precinct that will see the Grandstand restored to its original, splendid state,” Cr Lyons said. “It is an iconic building in Eaglehawk and this transformation will give it a new lease on life.” – Joel Peterson

Focus on Frankston

By JOEL PETERSON

TRUE BLUES: Braves v Bandits. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN. More photos at www.bendigophotos.com

AFTER completing a sweep of last weekend’s games, Bendigo Bank Braves coach Ben Harvey said his side is completely focused on its vital clash with Frankston this week. Before last Friday’s contest against Albury-Wodonga, the Braves had tasted victory just once in their previous four hitouts. An MVP-level display from star import Dustin Salisbery who scored 27 points on 75 per cent shooting, as well as 18 points and 12 rebounds from the consistent Zack Atkinson. Salisbery then led the Braves to another win over Brisbane on Saturday night by a solitary point, and collected SEABL Player of the Week honours for his efforts. Harvey demanded intensity from his

side over the weekend, and was glad when they delivered on the promise. “On Friday night we started really well which is something we haven’t been doing, and I guess the pleasing thing about the win against Brisbane on Saturday is the determination we showed after being 11 points down and coming back to win,” he said. “It showed some of those mental aspects and the application that probably has not been there at times this season, and to be able to string two games together for the first time since early May was a step in the right direction.” The Braves can cement their fourth spot in the south conference with a win over Frankston tomorrow night, before playing Hobart at home on Sunday.

Kangaroo Flat marks 150 From Page 40 “If we happen to grab a finals game, great, but it is not the end of the world if we don’t make it this year.” Not only is the club hoping the weekend will be a financial success, but Clohsey says he hopes it will bring former Flat fans back into the fold. “One of the big aims for the weekend is to get people back and involved with the club. If they come along on the weekend and have spent some time away maybe it will prompt them to get involved again, which would be great,” he said. “We want to keep building, making the club a better place and getting the Kangaroo Flat community and wider community involved with the club for years to come.” The club this week re-appointed coach Jason Stevens for the 2015 season as well as securing the commitment of key players including ruckman Nick Lang, the versatile

James Saville, on-ballers Corey Greer and Simon Davies and forwards Braydan Knox and Matt Giri. “We need a big win over South Bendigo on Saturday if we are to keep alive the very real opportunity that we have to play finals football,” Stevens said. “As a club we thought it was timely to announce the signings as part of our 150th celebrations this weekend to show past players, current players and supporters that we are moving forward with a strong playing core. “Personally I am delighted that the club wants me to continue past this season. Success will come if our players are prepared to work hard for it, and I am happy to be a part of that journey.” In other games in round 15 of the BFL Kyneton hosts top-of-the-table Strathfieldsaye, Sandhurst is at home to Castlemaine, Eaglehawk travels to Gardiner Reserve to tackle Gisborne and Golden Square takes on Maryborough.

Although Harvey admits third place is probably out of reach, a win against the Blues would give them a critical headto-head advantage in fourth. “Frankston have got head-to-head on

so the importance of the Frankston game is not lost on anyone. “Hobart will be a tough test as well, but our focus is 100 per cent on beating Frankston and turning our at-

I guess the pleasing thing about the win against Brisbane... is the determination we showed us after beating us by three early this season, so this game is really big,” he said. “If we win this game we are two games ahead of them, really three, because of that extra bonus from the headto-head advantage so this is almost like a final for both sides I guess. “Not that you think of these things as a coach, but if you do lose you are basically fifth and they have headto-head on you,

tention to Hobart after that.” The Bendigo Lady Braves will be gunning to further their advantage atop the SEABL’s south conference, with a double header against

ing the Lady Braves in third. Sunday’s games will be led by the Lady Braves tipping off at noon, before the men’s clash gets under way at 2pm.

Marking 150 years By JOEL PETERSON

THE rich history of the Kangaroo Flat Football Netball Club will be on show this weekend, as the club celebrates its 150th anniversary. Originally known as Yankee Boot Flat, named after the footwear of the miners in the area, the Roos have enjoyed limited success since entering the BFL as is currently constituted in 1983 but the club has no shortage of tales to tell. Its one senior premiership, in 1996, was coached by Simon

Jorgensen and captained by Chris Harrington, who was a figurehead in the organising committee for the 150th anniversary weekend. “Really the committee hasn’t had to do much at all, Chris Harrington and the working group for the celebrations have done a magnificent job with everything,” Kangaroo Flat president Rob Clohsey said. “It is certainly an exciting time for our club, and this is really the showpiece of what has been a big year. We have had Brendan Fevola

play on Good Friday, a number of functions including our ball and now this to really top the year off.” The club is hosting the launch of its 150th anniversary book written by football historian Darren Lewis on Friday night at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club, with a legends lunch to be held between 11am and 2pm on Saturday before the senior football clash with South Bendigo. A gala evening, including the club’s inaugural hall of fame in-

duction of eight club legends, will be held at the All Seasons on Saturday night before another function at the club’s social rooms on Sunday. After an especially lean period for the club, things have turned around in 2014, with the Roos fighting for a finals berth and facing financial stability for the first time in a number of years. Whether it plays finals or not, Clohsey said the Kangaroos’ 150th anniversary season has been a successful one.

“It has definitely been a successful year, even if we don’t make finals,” he said. “We didn’t put a win ratio down for this year, we needed to get stability off the field, we have done that, and we have had some success on the field too. “We are doing a lot of work offfield in terms of making our senior and junior clubs come together as one and we should be back in the black financially at year’s end.
