With ticket sales up and schools day booked out, Bendigo Writers Festival is set for a bumper event. “We’ve got almost 2000 seats booked for the Friday texts Mark the Spot program, and that’s followed by the opening night event with Blanche d’Alpuget in the Capital theatre,” BWF general manager David Lloyd said. “We’re tracking really well with sales across the weekend up on last

year, so we’re expecting the full-house sign on some sessionss. “the good news this year is that we have more sessions scheduled into the main Capital theatre, so we know we can seat more people.” Mr Lloyd said the first two years exceeded expectations.

“We’ve been surprised and delighted at how quickly our festival has become part of Central Victoria’s cultural calendar,” he said. “We have people coming from right across the region, so we know it’s an important and very welcome event for writers, readers and every-

one who enjoys good discussion and lively debate.” More than 50 sessions will take place across the weekend, in four venues in and around the Capital. “Some people know exactly who and what they want to see,” artistic director Rosemary Sorensen said.

“Others pick and choose on the spur of the moment. “We do know some of the sessions in the smaller venues will fill up, so we hope people make sure they turn up a bit early for must-see sessions.” More at www.bendigowritersfestival. com.au.

ONE of Central Victoria’s most prized river front properties, Lagoona Park at Newbridge, will go under the hammer next Thursday. The 954 hectare property enjoys eight kilometres of Loddon River frontage. Lagoona Park is famed as the location where the massive 26 kilogram Poseidon nugget was discovered in 1906. The nugget was named after the racehorse Poseidon, winner of the 1906 Caulfield Cup, Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup. The property has also been home to the well-known Gloroy Poll Dorset sheep stud since 1956. Elders Bendigo will offer Lagoona Park for auction from 1pm at the Newbridge Hall on Thursday, August 14. Kyneton is celebrating the completion of Piper + Wedge, the new $3.8million retail development in Kyneton’s thriving Piper Street. Liberals at the ready New candidate in the wings for Bendigo West

By ANTHONY RADFORD

THE Liberal Party could have a new Bendigo West candidate as early as today. Former candidate Jack Lyons resigned on Monday night after a series of rude and offensive comments posted on his personal facebook page were published. The party’s powerful State Administrative Committee met on Thursday night to decide the next step, whether to open it up for a branch vote or select a candidate themselves. That meeting could result in the announcement of a candidate. Bendigo Health chairman Michael Landgon is firming as favou-

rite to take over from Mr Lyons. Dr Langdon did not deny he had been approached. “This certainly has taken everyone by surprise,” Dr Langdon said. “It is too early to have given this serious thought.” The other option could be former National Party candidate Steven Oliver. Mr Oliver ran a close second in the seat at the 2010 election, and is seen as a strong chance to again do well. He has refused to comment, an indication he could be considering the move.

On numerous occasions since 2010, Mr Oliver said a return was unlikely. Meanwhile, Mr Lyons made a formal apology. “I apologise unreservedly for the comments on my facebook page, which were offensive and highly inappropriate,” he said. “They were not intended to be disrespectful to anyone in any way and I apologise for any offence I may have caused. “These comments were in a closed account and I do not know how they have surfaced. Nevertheless, this is no excuse for their pres-

ence on my facebook page at any time. “I apologise to the people of Bendigo West. I deeply regret my actions and the embarrassment it has caused my family, friends and colleagues.” Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards linked Mr Lyons’ facebook posts to the Liberal Party. “It is very important this is not turned into a debate about social media,” she said. “It is about the values, ethics and lack of respect held by certain members of the Liberal Party. “To expose these views exposes

exactly the lack of values of the Liberal Party, particularly the Bendigo Liberals.” Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley said it was offensive to tar the thousands of Liberal members and supporters with the same brush. “The circumstances surrounding the resignation of Jack Lyons are certainly distressing for the party, and for me,” he said. “Bendigo is a great community that deserves the best possible representation. “Jack Lyons’ comments do not represent the views of party members, or Liberal supporters. There is no place in our society for offensive comments of this nature.”

Timely launch for Girls in our Town Our very own journalist Dianne Dempsey has been a book reviewer for more than 20 years and is publishing her debut novel this year. “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” Ms Dempsey said. “In fact you could say I’m a great procrastinator. Either that or reviewing other people’s books can sometimes be an intimidating factor. “It would be fair to say that I’ve reviewed for most of the major newspapers in Australia and in doing so I’ve come across some wonderful writing. So it does take some gumption to put your money where your mouth is; telling other writers what is right and wrong with their work is one thing, but writing a good book yourself is altogether a different matter. “I’m also quietly terrified that my book will be reviewed by somebody who copped a bad review from me.” However insiders in the industry say that Dempsey’s book, Girls in our Town is on the money. While being tender and compassionate it is very funny as well. The title is derived from the Bob Hudson song which has been sung by Margret roadKnight for many years. “The sentiments contained in the song are around the issues that face country girls who are

Aura of a woman

BOOK CLUB: Peter Kennedy with author and journalist Dianne Dempsey. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN struggling to break away from small town expectations,” she said. “My characters live in a miners cottage in the Whipstick. “There is a single mother and her two daughters who all struggle. My main character Sheba often walks in the Whipstick and she has a deep affinity with it. “I was very honoured when the artist John Wolseley offered his artwork as part of the book’s cover. John has his studio in the forest and he too loves it. He very kindly wrote this endorse-

ment: “The forest is not just the setting for this gothic tale; it is one of the principle characters. Dempsey cleverly reveals its dark secrets.” Bendigo Publishing general manager Peter Kennedy said Girls in our Town was selected by Bendigo Writers Festival arts director rosemary Sorensen. “This is the second book we have published and it is a branch of Bendigo Publishing which we are pleased to explore,” he said. “Dianne’s book is just fantastic, so evocative of Eaglehawk

and Bendigo. The first book we published last year was Colin King’s A Vintage Death, a mystery which was set in the Heathcote, Bendigo area.” Girls in our Town will be launched by Jason Steger the literary editor of The Age on Sunday at the Hub in the Capital Theatre at 2pm. Girls in our Town will also be sung not by Margret roadKnight but by some girls in our town – from Girton Grammar – with musical back-up by Toly and Val Sawenko.

CHLOE Neath’s charcoal and pastel drawings are unique representations of women’s faces from the sublimely proud local Aboriginal elders to the deeply enigmatic Blanche d’Alpuget. Chloe chose d’Alpuget because she is an admirer of her work. “I see her as a strong woman who has been through quite a lot – particularly in terms of scrutiny from the public,” she said. “I think the portrait indicates she is the only one who knows about her life, she has an aura about her. It is very exciting because the Bendigo Writers Festival is going to present the portrait to Blanche as a thankyou during the festival.” In the spirit of the festival each artwork is accompanied by a quote from Shakespeare to help evoke the “feel” of each person being portrayed. The quote Chloe chose for her portrait of Blanche is from Measure to Measure: “Go to your bossum, knock there Ask what your heart must know.”

Uni aims to sell land

By CHRISTINE McGINN

LA Trobe University has plans to subdivide its land on Friswell Avenue in Flora Hill in a bid to increase its capital. The university has lodged plans to Greater Bendigo council for a 48-lot residential subdivision in Flora Hill. It is unclear whether the university would build homes for student accommodation or for general residential sale. “The university is presently reviewing student accommodation requirements, including current supply (private and university), projected future demand as well as the type, location and method of delivery,” a university spokesperson said.

“Some initial findings are that presently there has been a temporary correction of the underlying shortage of student accommodation and that there is an expectation, based on projected enrol-

land “to provide amenity and a financial return” to the university. A main objective of the master plan is to reduce assets and increase their financial capital. A university spokesperson

The university is presently reviewing student accommodation requirements ments, there will be a return to under supply around 2017.” However, under the university’s master plan vision for “Bendigo Campus 2030”, the site has been earmarked for sale. The master plan calls for the short to medium term divestment of co-development of surplus

said they were about to review the master plan following the release of the latest campus vision and future strategy. “No decision has been made regarding the site other than to obtain a planning permit for its subdivision. No business case has been submitted regarding capital

investment requirements or revenue projections for the site,” the spokesperson said. The planning application and current studies results will help contribute to the business case for Friswell Ave sites’ future. The proposed lots would range from 300 metres square to 1500m2 with a new accessway way and loop road through the development. The vacant, four-lot 3.2 hectare property is expected to be developed in stages with only two native trees marked for removal. But the site contains grey tailings sand material and requires onsite remedial works to repair the affected area. Council is yet to consider the proposal.

MENTAL health patients in Bendigo are set to be placed on increasing waiting lists, as local services are underfunded. After one week on the job, Mind Australia told the ABC, they were lacking the adequate resources and funding to cater to the local demand. Mind Australia said the community will have to wait longer for access to vital mental health services in the region. The organisation took over control as Greater Bendigo’s and Campaspe, Central Goldfields, Loddon, Macedon Ranges and Mt Alexander shires approved provider. Mind Australia deputy chief executive Margaret Grigg told the ABC, there were not enough resources to cater to the demand. Mind Australia, Care Connect with Life Without Barriers won the bid to deliver mental health services to the region earlier this year. The consortium officially took over control last week following their transition period. Mental Health Minister Mary Woolridge said this was a “new era of community mental health care in Bendigo and the Loddon Mallee”. “These changes have been made so that our mental health system better enables adults and young people with mental illness to live independently, maintain the best possible social and emotional wellbeing and live satisfying lives in the community, regardless of where they live,” she said. The State Government streamlined the delivery of services to 20 organisations across the state, with four in Loddon Mallee. The “new era” provides tailored care programs, a single intake system, priority support, better youth rehabilitation services and localised information. “The Napthine Government has increased funding for community mental health services by 30 per cent, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to building a better mental health system for all Victorians,” Ms Wooldridge said. “Mental health services, families, carers and people with a mental illness have been calling for a change in community health services. “These reforms will deliver improved access, increase quality of service and provide greater flexibility for clients across Victoria.”

Students share a culture STUDENT’S at St Therese’s Primary School in Kennington recently experienced a memorable day with a difference, during Indonesian Cultural Day where children experienced Indonesia’s culture first hand. “It is one thing to learn the Indonesian language in the classroom but the children have a whole new appreciation when they are immersed in the Indonesian culture through aspects of the arts and recreation,” St Theresa’s principal Matthew Mann said. Indonesian Cultural Day takes place every three years and gives the students an opportunity to use the Indonesian language in a fun and hands-on way. “This year’s Indonesian Cultural day was a resounding success with the children really enjoying the activities and learning so much,”LOTE teacher Ibu Etty said. St Therese’s Cultural Day culminated with a spectacular concert for parents, teachers and staff featuring traditional music and dance performed by students wearing traditional costume. Student gym future unsure EVOLUTION Sports and Fitness Centre at La Trobe Bendigo may face closure after a feasibility review has questioned the business’ commercial viability. Staff have told members their memberships cannot be renewed or extended beyond December 31. The gym is run by the Bendigo Student Association. BSA vice president Marcus Hinneberg said the feasibility study was part of “prudent business practice” to make informed decisions about the gym’s viability. “A decision on the future of the gym has not been finalised as yet and consultation with stakeholders continues,” he said. “It is hoped that a decision as

to the gym’s future shall be made by late August.” Only one third of the gym’s memberships are students, with a large portion elderly gym-users. Although marketed as “not only a uni gym” the BSA’s aim is to allocate funds to run services to better student life. “The centre is open to everybody in the Bendigo community with a desire to change their lifestyle and evolve for the better,” the gym’s website says. “We believe that a healthy level of fitness helps people learn more effectively, cope better with stress, and maintain healthy energy levels.” The BSA reported an increased

number in student memberships in 2013 but struggled to attract general public members. “We have seen a decline in membership numbers over the past few years as competition within the health and fitness industry

degree by the lack of space, outdated equipment, poor exposure to the general public, and the need to update outdoor signage,” the report says. “In the interest of student welfare, our dedication to providing

sport and fitness on campus will not waiver. “We hope that the university can support us in providing this valuable service into the future.” The gym is one of three commercial businesses, including Sweeny’s Cafe and Runes Students Association Shop, run by BSA. The three commercial businesses lost a combined $111,722 last year and with an additional $10,676 administration defecit. The not-for-profit organisation ran at a $258,471 loss for the year ending December 31, 2013. La Trobe University head of campus Robert Stephenson said they were having ongoing discussions with the BSA.

New inspector aims to focus on prevention BENDIGO has a new cop on the block, Inspector Peter Greaney. Inspector Greaney officially stepped into the top job this week and will lead the uniform police officers to assist the community. Inspector Greaney is enthused to be working in Bendigo and serving the larger Police Service Area.

Alcohol and drug motivated crimes are an issue “There are more staff to manage, it’s more of a challenge than Maryborough but it has the same issues,” the father of four said. “The challenge is the increased number of staff (to his previous role), and to effectively use and

provide the best policing system and put in resources in the right areas of concern. “Former Inspector Brad Dixon has done a terrific job and I look forward to working with the uniform police members.” Inspector Greaney said he was focused on preventing and combating crime in the region. “Certainly alcohol and drug motivated crimes are an issue, public order issues and family violence is a major focus across Victoria and in Greater Bendigo,” he said. Inspector Greaney was the Central Goldfields’ local area commander based at the Maryborough police station. “It’s early days yet, just have to sit back and see how things operate and look at how things work, meet and greet with the officers,” he said. Inspector Greaney has been in the police force for 29 years and 32 years in the defence force reserve. Inspector Greaney is also a Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve flight sergeant at the Reserve Airbase Protection Flight in Point Cook.

Prepaid Funerals DRESSING UP: Rod Fyffe and Elise Chapman. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN BENDIGO stepped back on Wednesday when the city marked the centenary of the start of World War I. It was the first of a series of ANZAC commemorative events planned over the next four years. Edwardian-dressed actors joined Greater Bendigo councillors at the Bendigo Town Hall to re-enact the day Bendigo woke to the news that Great Britain and the Empire had declared war on Germany. Vintage cars that were new and novel on the streets

of Bendigo in 1914 along with horse and carts and a brass band converged at the front of the Town Hall as a telegram with news of the declaration was received. Mayor Barry Lyons said news travelled much slower 100 years ago. “It was not until two days after the formal declaration in Britain that Bendigo woke to the news many had feared for some weeks,” he said. “The residents of our city soon mobilised in support of King and Country

and in the fortnight after that declaration, many young Bendigo men prepared to enlist to defend the Empire. “They were miners, bank clerks and teachers, farmers and tradesmen who stood up for Australia.” Bendigo RSL president Cliff Richards said the first enlistees from the area in World War I had been members of the 67th Infantry, which later become Bendigo’s own 38th Battalion. “The News of War re-en-

actment and commemoration created awareness and understanding of what life in Bendigo was like a century ago,” Mr Richards said. “For today’s generations, it will set a scene to understand the stories that will be recalled and unearthed over the coming years as we pause to reflect on the sacrifice and service by young men and women from the young nation of Australia.” www.anzaccentenarybendigo.com.au. COLUMN Page 19

Family seeks hero recognition By STEVE KENDALL

THE quiet back road of Gaskell Street, Eaglehawk has a story behind it. It’s named after William Gaskell from Eaglehawk, an Australian soldier who earned the Military Medal during an action in New Guinea in November 1942. His niece Jenny Gaskell thinks he deserves a bit more recognition for the part he played in the war, and improving the street surface could be the first step In action at Gona, Private Gaskell went to help a wounded mate and two others, and returned the fire of Japanese soldiers while he bandaged the wounds.

Gaskell kept working until he was himself wounded. His mate, Lance Corporal Davis, was born in Bendigo, but died of his wounds that same day, and Gaskell was shipped to hospital in Brisbane. Private Gaskell was awarded the Military Medal for “Extreme courage and devotion near Gona,” but died from his wounds on December 13. Mrs Gaskell said she would like to see more recognition for him. “To save three people is a heroic thing to do,” she said. “It would be big news if it happened today. “He hasn’t even got his picture at the RSL.”

FAMILY VALUES: Siblings Peter and Jenny Gaskell in Gaskell Street. Mrs Gaskell said Bendigo needed to know more about selfless acts. “We live in a ‘me’ generation, but one kind act a day makes you a better person,” she said. “I think it would be

A 73-year-old woman reversed her car into a former car rental shop on High Street yesterday. Bendigo Police Leading Senior Constable Niall King said the driver accidentally put her car in reverse when she was trying to leave the complex at 12.30pm. “If this had happened a couple of feet over it would have closed a business,” he said. Nobody was in the shop at the time. The elderly driver of the silver Honda was treated by ambulance officers at the scene. Building owner Ron Poyser said it was a “shock horror” but fortunate no one was hurt. “I am very, very pleased nobody was hurt because the damage is very substantial. I am just pleased the lady is okay. We can attend to the building but lives are a different kettle of fish,” Mr Poyser said. Leading Snr Const King said the incident was a warning to elderly drivers about deciding whether it was safe for them to drive. “We need to be aware of the welfare of other road users on the road,” he said. “If you are concerned about relatives, contact VicRoads. It is not just a matter that VicRoads will automatically take the licence off someone. “If there are concerns, VicRoads can take them for a driving test, see if they need to change vehicle types or have conditions placed on their licence.” A building inspector also arrived to assess the shop damage. Police, ambulance officers, State Emergency Services and the Country Fire Authority members attended to the incident. ............................................... DRIVERS are being warned to take care on the icy roads during the spate of bad weather. Road users are asked to take extra caution and time on the roads, especially from Big Hill towards Melbourne. Sergeant Damian Keegan said it was fortunate no one had been seriously injured after recent incidents. Sgt Keegan encourages drivers to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes to ensure windows are fully cleared and defrosted. Sgt Keegan reminds drivers to take their time on the road are not rushing on the roads. ............................................... LOCALS are being asked to help po-

Two young women were in the vehicle but one was believed to have hidden in the bushes in the nearby area. A witness said one woman had “done a runner”, stumbling away from the incident to a nearby street. Police officers attended the incident and spoke with two people at a home on Inglewood Street. Right path to uni LA TROBE University and Bendigo TAFE have joined forces to smoothly transition students from TAFE to university. The education partners signed a new agreement to give students who complete diplomas a university place. Students will be given support to help them transition into university. La Trobe University Pro ViceChancellor Professor Richard Speed said the agreement enabled students to study and live locally. “This agreement is about making it simpler and easier for young Victorians to get a great education

and ensure local students can stay and study right here in Bendigo,” he said. “We know that most students who learn locally, go on to work locally or in other regional areas after graduation, so it makes sense to encourage as many young people as we can to study at Bendigo TAFE and then La Trobe University. “Under this agreement students can begin their TAFE studies knowing they have the option of further study once they gain their TAFE qualification and can rest assured the transition to University will be simple and seamless.”

Bendigo Kangan Institute Acting chief executive officer Grant Sutherland said it would strengthen regional students’ pathways. “This partnership is another step in progressing the goal of transforming Bendigo into an education city,” he said. New students will also have early access to university classes, events, study skills sessions and student mentoring. La Trobe and Bendigo TAFE will also host a joint Open Day on August 17 from 10am to 3pm, with the program in today’s Weekly. – Christine McGinn

100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

Memorial moves on US TRIP: Anne Marie Rodgers. Photo: STEVE KENDALL

Harvard trip for VCC principal IT is a long way from Golden Square Primary School to Boston in the USA. Just ask Victory Christian College principal Anne Marie Rodgers who travelled to Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute last month. In the 1960s, Ms Rodgers first encountered her life long association with education as a nervous student to the leafy avenues of one of the world’s most prestigious universities. The week-long seminar examined and discuss edchanges faced by educators and students for increasingly diverse and digitised futures. Ms Rodgers joined another 11 Victorian principals as part of the Independent Schools Leadership Program, where they met

more than 250 delegates from around the world. “Years ago education was all about providing content, but today content is right at children’s fingertips,” Ms Rodgers said. “We need to find ways to better prepare children, so they can thrive in a digitised world.” The seminar looked at and discussed the latest trends in globalisation, the digital revolution and mind brain research. Ms Rodgers is hoping for inspirational ideas and some big picture thinking by the world’s leading experts on the best ways to help educate children in a rapidly changing environment. “It really was an honour to attend,” Ms Rodgers said. – Nick Atyeo

STAGE two works on the Bendigo Bushfire Memorial site in Albert Richardson Reserve Redevelopment are complete. The Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund gave $420,000 towards the redevelopment after Bendigo was hit in the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Two separate fires ripped through Bendigo, taking one life and about 60 homes. Power has been be connected to the site, new lighting, toilets, barbecue, picnic tables and shelter, an irrigation system and landscaping to complete the second stage. Greater Bendigo councillor Mark Weragoda said more than 600 people were directly affected by the Bendigo

fires and the redevelopment was an important recovery project. “The memorial is a lasting reminder of our city’s largest-ever natural disaster and a tribute to our community’s resilience and ability to recover from such an event,” he said. “We have been lucky enough to receive an incredible gift from the appeal fund and development of the reserve over two stages has turned it into a beautiful and functional gathering place. “It is somewhere for locals and visitors to picnic with family and friends but also allows those affected by the Bendigo fire to reflect on our community’s incredible courage and spirit.”

Some respect please Dianne Dempsey’s series of articles entitled “The Fallen Women” has left me feeling offended and distressed. i spent around six years at St aidan’s, not because i was a “fallen woman” but because i was a kid whose parents had died. My parents were poor but they provided me with a loving and safe home. They did everything for me. after they died i was sent to various aunts for a while but that didn’t work out as none of them really wanted me. i was like an invisible person in their houses; they didn’t care about me, just made me feel as if i was a “nothing”. i was often sent to bed at 6pm while they drank. Often i had to sit and listen to them while they called me dumb and stupid and i wasn’t allowed to move. i started to believe them and began to hate myself. Finally, one night my aunt tried to put a pillow over my face when i was in bed. i managed to push her off. The next day i was sent to my grandmother’s and a few days later two women came and took me to St aidan’s Convent. i had no idea what was happening and i was very frightened, no one had told me anything. i found that at St aidan’s i was shown how to do things; how to make a bed, how to wash my clothes and how to sweep under my bed. i was in charge of looking after the balcony which had to be kept swept and polished. it wasn’t hard. Yes, we worked in the laundry, but i never found it hard and was never made to do anything i didn’t want to do. i learnt skills that i could go on to use later in life. The sisters all worked alongside us and they certainly worked much harder than me. We had lessons in ballroom dancing, tap, and irish dancing. We had singing and elocution lessons, tennis and calisthenics lessons, all of which would help us get on in life. We often had concerts. Yes, sometimes i did feel very alone; there was no one to love me or to look out, just for me, but i felt safe. The nuns did their best with what they knew. Because of what the nuns taught me i have been able to keep in the main stream of life and have had jobs in a variety of areas; childcare, shop assistant, overlocker, nurse’s aide, dental nurse and i’m a mother. i have never been in debt because they taught me how to handle money. However, i find it distressing

that so many people who don’t know about life in the convent often assume that we were “fallen women”; this series of articles just strengthens that belief. Maybe we should all think about how we treat our orphans today. are they everyone’s responsibility or just the government’s? Don’t feel sad for them. Do something for them. Let’s make sure they get a good education so they can go on to feel worthwhile and do something great with their lives. The public have a view that being brought up in an orphanage makes you a bad person. i even got told that i would make a bad parent because of it. i was not a bad or “fallen person”; i was just a kid whose parents had died. i don’t want pity, i want respect. Patricia Boram, Williamstown North

Left out in the cold “THe pot boils over” editorial (Bendigo Weekly, aug 1) failed to analyse why council is being “ripped about” at the Greater Bendigo council. editor anthony Radford did not acknowledge that the executive officers, an unelected almost unaccountable group, control council. Councillors have token influence. This raises the temperature. Cr Cox’s frustration is that senior staff predetermined positions go against everyday residents’ feelings and he is supported by councillors Helen Leach and elise Chapman. Like the three councillors, ratepayers feel left out in the cold too, adding further fuel to the debate. Council’s own survey shows 82 per cent of residents say they have little opportunity to influence council decisions. Weaker councillors strive to please council officers, not ratepayers, and this adds to the aggravation. Officers control councillors information, ensuring dominance. Compliant councillors, enjoying the ride, back the officers. it is easier that way. Real research is not required. Popularity is more important. Council business, with a $178 million budget, is difficult and complex. it is near impossible for part-time councillors to make any meaningful contribution. They just do not have the time, skill sets, or experience. Councillors should act like a board of directors, but they don’t. instead, senior officers steer key decisions and major projects, and pretend democracy.

To buy a signed copy of any Glanville cartoon please phone 5440 2500

Senior council staff consistently ignore Cr Cox’s pleas for cost savings and efficiencies and limited rate increases. Council is a monopoly provider. There is no pressure for performance improvement or cost savings. if senior staff had “some skin in the game” there would be a dramatic change. Until executive officers are made more accountable to ratepayers, ongoing “boilovers” are inevitable. Changing councillors over the last four council elections changed nothing. Under the present system, senior officers supported by a majority of compliant councillors, will always call the shots. Cr Cox’s perseverance is to be admired. He is the voice for struggling ratepayers; he is up against insurmountable odds. Wouldn’t you get disappointed/frustrated if you were in his shoes? Michael McKenzie, Bendigo

LLENs needs support Like many, i value the vital support that the Goldfields Local Learning and employment networks provide for young people in creating partnerships and brokering initiatives with education providers, industry and the community across our region. The LLens across Victoria play an important role in keeping young people engaged with education and training, and helping them to find

real jobs. LLenS were created by Labor in 2001 as part of our strategy to improve school retention rates, lower youth unemployment, and provide jobs to those most in need. at a time when youth unemployment in this region is over 20 per cent, the napthine Government has abandoned its responsibility for this vital support network, in handing over the majority of funding responsibility for LLens to the Commonwealth Government. now that the abbott Government has announced that it will withdraw its funding for LLens at the end of this year, the onus is on the napthine Government to restore state funding for LLens, which are vital to employment growth and support for communities across Victoria. Denis napthine needs to step up and support LLens, before funding dries up at the end of the year, forcing the closure of many LLens across Victoria. Maree Edwards MP State Member for Bendigo West

Where is the diversity? in my opinion there is something very wrong and possibly inconsistent with the picture on page 7 of the Bendigo Weekly, Friday, august 1. The article is about Muslims marking the end of Ramadan. it talks about the eid celebration which comes after the month of

daytime fasting. The eid celebration it says, is about “an abundance of food, meeting other people and celebrating the joy and happiness”. all of these undeniably being wonderful human participations, experienced by most of us at various times. The article also quotes “we welcome everybody to join us” and “when more people join there is more diversity”. Yet the picture i am seeing is of a group of people which represents only 50 per cent of the human population. Males. Where are the females? if the photo is about prayer, females can pray too. Females are equal in the eyes of their creator. if the photo is about something else, then my point stands. Where are the females? Who exactly do you want to join? it is not attractive for me to join if i am then excluded or segmented. australia is not a country where this type of division has typically been encouraged nor exhibited. all the more so, as australia and many other parts of our world, rightly strive to eliminate discriminatory practices against one another – discrimination of colour and creed for example. We are being grossly inconsistent to these principles if we allow it on one hand and rail against it on another. R. Meager-Green, Ringwood East

Positive chapter FOUR years, 364 days and 22 hours after starting his facebook site, Jack Lyons took it down. Less than four hours earlier, at about 6pm on Monday night, Mr Lyons resigned as the Liberal Party’s Bendigo West candidate. He wasn’t the first person to fall because of social media, he wasn’t even the first in the week, and he will not be the last. His “jokes” posted on his personal facebook site were awful. They were rude, sexist and, racist. That is not to say Mr Lyons is sexist, racist or rude, but in modern politics there is no distinguishing between “the record” and “the man”. If a 13-year-old boy posted the kind of “jokes” on social media Mr Lyons’ did on his facebook page, he would be grounded and told to “grow up”. Sadly, though, Lyons’ posts are not just teenage-boy humour. They are the public record for someone we are expected to trust. He knows this and he has apologised. Politicians of today are held to a much higher standard than ever before. It is easier than ever before to find something in their past that

could damage their reputation and their careers. This was not the fault of facebook, of social media or of the “friend” who printed them out and walked them into the offices of the Herald Sun. Blame lays solely at the foot of Mr Lyons and he knows that.

Forgiveness is often as important as blame It is now up to Mr Lyons to win back support over time and show the community he is not the sort of man he has been portrayed as. Forgiveness is often as important as blame and outrage in these instances, all of which are warranted. The coverage of the issue was the latest in a series of bad press for Bendigo. Together with the Harley Hicks trial and the mosque debate, this story has cast an ugly shadow over Bendigo and its residents.

Supported Residential Care

However, this weekend the city gets a chance to be in the national spotlight for all the right reasons. The third annual Bendigo Writers Festival begins today. It is remarkable that in such a short time the festival has gained such a great reputation. Over the past two years, visitors and talent have often commented they are surprised the festival is so young, given how well it is run and staged. It looks like this year’s event will be bigger and better and attract more people than the previous two. Everyone involved must be congratulated, from the organising committee to the sponsors, and the volunteers who will make the whole thing run smoothy. If you are around this weekend it is a must-visit. If you are interested in books, the event is an orgy of opportunities. If not, a lot of the sessions are still worth a look. The ideas discussed in them extend well beyond the literary world and into the real world. It is sure to create some muchneeded positive news and vibes for Bendigo.

JACK Lyons’ resignation is nobody’s victory and while he may well have only himself to blame for the circumstance he found himself in this week, I also take a dim view at many of the sideline critics lining up to sink the slipper into him. To read comments from elected parliamentarians on various social media platforms looking to draw the Liberal Party further into the awful mess and score a political point for their efforts was a major disappointment. Sometimes saying less says more, but sometimes that’s a difficult thing for a politician to accept. There’s not a lot to be gained by politicians picking over the demise of the now former Liberal candidate for Bendigo West, especially politicians from other parts of the state who have probably never

met Jack Lyons and who otherwise have no need to raise this ugly matter at all. It does nothing to serve the interests of their constituents. Good government commands good opposition and around election time that means ensuring we have the best possible contest we can.

ments and to point out their vulgarity and unacceptability, it’s hypocritical for any of us to take the moral high ground but not be prepared to eventually forgive Mr Lyons as well. Jack Lyons is paying an enormous price for his stupidity and his naivety. But we need to be very clear also

Jack Lyons is paying an enormous price for his stupidity and his naivety The resignation of Jack Lyons has significantly weakened the Liberal Party’s chances of winning back the seat of Bendigo West, and an already tough challenge this week for the Liberals, just became an almost impossible one. And while all of us have been quick to condemn Mr Lyons’ social media com-

No reason for flag waving

dear dotty...

HERE seems to be unnatural fixation in marking the start of World War I. Everywhere you turn, including Bendigo, someone is drawing our attention to the 100 years since politicians failed with diplomacy, and relied on sending other people’s children into the maw. Britain is spending about $85,000,000 on marking the centenary, with Germany weighing in at less than $6,000,000. This is a monumental waste, and Australia is there too. Television is flooded with special programs and shows to mark the day. Why? It was a bloody awful horror. Normal people were blown apart for no gain. Families destroyed forever, for nothing. Making a play about it does not heal the wounds, nor does it make anything right. I have been a military historian since school, I am fascinated by the facts, but to see war portrayed as mass en-

tertainment misses the mark. Detractors from my views could say we need to know to stop it happening again, but that has not worked, and I don’t believe it ever will. The warring nations had been at it for centuries even before the so-called Great War. In 1968 the film Oh! What a Lovely War was released, and was the ultimate in anti-war movies. It showed the various generals passing around orders and sending more men to the front from the comfort of their offices. It was a parody, it was cruel, but it resonated with me even at the tender age of 10 when I

were there. Not me, not you. We should be treating it like a remembrance ceremony. Instead of dressing up and waving flags, flags should be at half mast. I am not anti commemoration, in fact I can honestly say every day I reflect on the sacrifice so many made so I can live the life I do. But it does not mean I want to wave a flag, be it British or Australian, and dress up in Edwardian dress for every anniversary of note. There is nothing to celebrate, remember certainly, but celebration is for happy events, not the state-sponsored murder of millions.

Dear John Smith, Your first mistake was trying to show off to your socalled friends. Are facebook friends really friends or are they faux friends? The sort of friend you don’t have to make any effort to talk to or entertain except tick a “like” box. Mind you I have over 100,000 hits, which they tell me is more than J Lo that is because I have a better and bigger bottom than her. As for wanting comments to fade away, if you really want to preserve your privacy don’t say anything smutty, stupid, racist or sexist or headless in the first place.

Anxious Angela Dearest Anxious Angela, Why are you unhappy in the first place? Do you a have a sagging mattress? A terrible childhood? Sounds like an angry husband to me. Burn the steaks. Serve the eggs raw. Give him the shove. If you don’t want to go that far you can still have fun spending by shopping at the Reject shop but whatever you do, do not buy your condoms there. He lies down without a care in the world, among many other men, and then they merge into white crosses. The view gradually shifts wider, and there are thousands upon thousands of white crosses, and that’s what it’s about. A night to remember SISTERS DOLL

S

ISTERS Doll are three brothers who aim to possess their audience with the power of live performance. They are at the Music Man Bendigo on August 16 with Path of Destruction, so be ready for some noise. Sisters Doll kick-started in 2010 jamming in their back shed with a passion, love and drive for music.

“It lead to winning several band competitions, playing at festivals, putting on our own shows, a tour of the US and now playing our own shows in Australia,” drummer Jayden Varner said. “Everything we do from glamming up, pyros on stage, to drum risers, sexy girls dancing on stage, smoke and lasers and our slamming music, we believe in.

Varner said every time they perform they put on a show as if there were 150,000 people there. Varner said they were born to be performers and are taking over the world by bringing back the glam rock look. “Are You Ready To Play?” Support is from Path of Destruction a heavy/rock, 80s style metal band from Bendigo bringing the old school metal to a new age and form. Formed in early 2012 they are heavily influenced by bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Motley Crue, KISS, Dokken, Pantera and Skid Row. Also on stage is 14-year-old Stacy V who is becoming known around her hometown as one of Bendigo’s upcoming young

artists. She has performed in numerous venues in Bendigo, Melbourne, Shepparton and several charity events in the region. Stacy is an acoustic performer who’s love of music is mainly heavy metal and hard rock. Necron 99 formed in 2010 and have been working together over the years primarily playing covers with the prospect of writing original material. Just like the Terminator-style robot they are named after, they cannot be stopped from completing their mission, and are as deadly as they come. You can see them all on Saturday, August 16, The Music Man Megastore, 264 Hargreaves Street, Bendigo. Doors open 8pm, $10 entry, 18+ show.

The Proms performances are on again The Proms are a series of accessible and entertaining 45 minute music performances in an intimate space which is warm and comfortable and has great acoustics. The three sessions each Sunday have a break in between for refreshments and chat.

This year the Bendigo Chamber Choir and the Friends of the Bendigo Studio of Vocal Art and Music are performing for the first time. August 10 performers include, Christopher Wilson, pianist and composer, Bendigo Chamber

Choir, Bendigo Chorale. August 17: Bendigo Guitar Trio, Women of Note - women’s choir, Brenda Kinsella - coloratura soprano August 24: Jenny Gogolin and Peter Butler playing flute and piano, Meryl Wilkinson harp and

Something to salivate about T

RYING out craft beers can be a hard call, but somebody has got to do it. Bendigo on the Hop will be held on Saturday, August 16 from 11am to 6pm. It’s a movable feast which is being hosted by 10 venues around the CBD. As well as local and national beers you can taste local produce and music. For further information go to www. bendigobeer.com ON the other hand you might enjoy a long Italian lunch or a “lungo pranzo” at Castlemaine’s Public INN on Saturday, September 6, where you will find a delicious feast waiting for you. The guest chef is Douglas Elder who hails from the dining room of Brown Brothers Winery and who is a great fan of Southern Italian Cuisine. The lunch consists of multiple shared courses served at communal tables. Go to Public INN’s website for further information. THIS Saturday you will be able to enjoy the Elmore Community

Market where they have cakes, preserves, pastries, plants and sweets as well as bric a brac and women’s fashion. In case of inclement weather, the market will be at the Elmore Town Hall. There is a karaoke competition too. Enquiries 0408 582 267. FOLLOWING the retirement of Goldfields Honey, the Bendigo Community Farmers Market is delighted to welcome to the market our new honey producers, June and Chris Dawson of Dawson’s Honey. Chris is a honey purist; he ensures his bees have as little contact with nasty chemicals as possible. He harvests, extracts and handles his product with great care, love and respect; ensuring it is as close to the flavours, aromas and goodness of the natural product as it is possible to achieve. Many producers would be pollinating local almonds at this

time of year, but he won’t allow his bees near any blossom that has such a constant spraying regime. He moves his bees around eight times a year, collecting the honey between moves so that the product is true to variety. Keeping the nectar source pure is not as difficult as it may seem. Chris tells us that bees will only work the most economical floral source for them (that which is highest in nutrients and closest to the hive). For example, when the blue gums are flowering, although there may be other flowers in the area, for the bees the blue gum is their preferred nectar. So this becomes the only source for the honey produced at that time. Chris’ bees spend time with red gums from the rivers, mountain blue gums in the high country. They produce mountain gum honey on a ridge overlooking Bulla, and orange blossom honey on the Riverina. Dawson’s Honey offers tastings at their market stall. For instance,

orange blossom honey is unique and quite different in flavour. While it may not be for everyone, those who enjoy it find its citrus flavour and aroma exquisite. Chris suggests when tasting to hold the honey in your mouth for a while. That way you will experience all the flavours, sensations and aromas and be able to appreciate just how good it is. This month’s market is on Saturday, August 9, from 9 am to 1pm at Sidney Myer Place. For more information on the Bendigo Community Farmers Market, please call Hayley Davis on 0498 186 491, email manager@ bcfm.org.au or visit www.bcfm. org.au. For general information about Dawson’s Honey, call June on 0428 134 573; for specific information on Dawson’s bees and honey production, call Chris on 0428 109 164.

Willow Room Recipe Pumpkin gnocchi This dish is a great alternative to plain gnocchi. With lots of pumpkin available this time of the year choose a dry fleshed pumpkin like a butternut. Saute pumpkin gnocchi with brown butter, sage and walnuts. Serves four as a main dish. Ingredients: Two cups cooked pumpkin pureed Three large desiree potatoes One cup plain flour Pinch grated nutmeg One lemon – zest and juice One egg 100 grams butter One tblspn chopped fresh sage Salt & pepper 50 grams walnuts roasted Method: • Pre-heat oven to 220c. Prick

the potatoes a few times and place on a baking tray to dry roast for about 45 minutes. They need to be well cooked and soft. • Once the potatoes are cooked and while they are still hot, cut in half and carefully scoop out all the flesh and put through a mouli or fine potato ricer. • Mix the potatoes with the pumpkin puree first then add the flour, eggs, nutmeg, lemon zest and seasoning to form a soft dough. Don’t over work the dough just mix enough until combined. • On a floured service roll into long thin tubes about the thickness of your thumb, then cut into pillow shapes about two cm long. Blanch the gnocchi in boiling salted water until they float to the top. Take

Tues-Sat

Dinner out of the water and place on a lightly oiled tray to cool down naturally. • In a large non-stick pan add a little oil and saute the gnocchi until it’s golden brown on both sides, tossing occasionally so they are evenly coloured. Add the butter and turn the heat right up until the butter starts to foam. When the butter turns a nutty brown colour add the sage, walnuts, lemon juice and seasoning, then take off the heat and toss the pan a couple of times to coat the gnocchi in the sauce. Serve with fresh grated parmesan and rocket leaves.

More market gardeners T

HERE are many stories about the Chinese market gardeners, some of which I had written about last week. In the area of Grassy Flat, close to what is now called the Kennington Reservoir, there were a number of Chinese gardeners. One can imagine that the two reservoir ponds and the nearby small creek was a good place to have a market garden, the second reason was the ready availability of manure from the holding yards of nearby slaughtering facilities. It is yet to be determined whether the Chinese market gardeners availed themselves of the bone dust and other fertilisers produced by Peter Rohs near the corner of Strickland and Rohs roads. Rohs’s works were a successful commercial enterprise, he was also an exporter of his products. There were a number of Chinese who were what in the 19th century was called, the “rag and bone collectors”. For those participating in this line of work it gave unfortunately very slender returns, but just enough to keep the wolf from the door if they collected with determination.

Peter Rohs had a depot in Bridge Street not far from the then Chinatown and the Ironbark Chinese Camp. Yen Loong was one of a group of Chinese market gardeners of Grassy Flat. Like many of his compatriots he lived in a hut close to his cultivated land. In 1908 Yen Loong had reached the noble age of 70 years. He had a badly swollen head and some people thought that Yen Loong had Hansen’s disease or leprosy. As he was in the White Hills Police District he begged the constable to have him admitted to hospital when it was found that he certainly did not have leprosy. Some of the Chinese market gardeners sold their vegetables at the market sheds located in Market Square, the area immediately adjacent to the Town Hall. In 1873 Caucasian market gardeners protested to the fact of city council charging rents for space in this facility. They pointed out that the council received considerable income not only from them but also the Chinese and the hawkers. In their protest they

suggested to have a market outside the City boundaries thereby thwarting the heavy impost of fees. Kew Oh, another market gardener, in September 1910, as was his weekly practice, came with his horse and covered cart into Bendigo. His load of vegetables to be delivered to wholesalers, the horse ambled steadily along Pall Mall and Kew Oh was at the point of making a turn into Bull Street. The horse was suddenly spooked by the motion and sound of the council steam roller and took off in fright. The horse and cart collided with a tram pole in the middle of Pall Mall breaking one of the cart’s shafts before coming to rest against the cast iron pole. One of the luckiest market gardeners, in January 1916, was a Myers Flat Chinese Ah Ghan. This energetic 57-year-old was receiving the assistance of some other Chinese market gardeners to drag the carcass of a dead horse to an abandoned mine shaft which had already received over a period of time a number of other carcasses.

SAD END: A carcass destined for the mine shaft.

The mouth of the shaft had quite steep sides and the other two thought it better to obtain some additional help. Ah Ghan was really determined to complete the task, and in his efforts to drag the horse’s carcass on his own, the rope he was pulling on snapped and Ah Ghan fell down the shaft. The shaft was about 28 metres deep and his mates thought that would

be the end of Ah Ghan. In desperation his mates called out to him and he amazingly answered, to “get him out of the shaft as the stench was unbearable”. When help was secured and Ah Ghan was brought to the surface he only had a few minor cuts and scratches and some slight bruising. After this ordeal Ah Ghan walked home to his hut to have a rest.

ITH another wonderful Bendigo Writers Festival about to begin, Heritage Matters thought it might be interesting to meet one local from our past who combined all that was best about the locality – pioneering spirit, public mindedness, and a literary heart. James Mouat was a Scotsman, who found himself at the age of 13, the sole surviving member of his family, working on the Barnadown Run out along the Campaspe in 1836. The adventures and exploits he experienced as a young man were eventually published as The Rise of the Australian Wool Kings, serialised widely and published in 1892. His book, though forgotten today, contributed much to the colonies’ and Empire’s perception of Bendigo’s early history. He went on to be one of the major figures in the development of Eaglehawk as a distinct municipality He was one of those leaders that Bendigo seems to excel in – public spirited, passionate, with an aesthetic side. Just the sort of chap who would be a staunch supporter of the Bendigo Writers Festival! – Peter Thompson

Cod whistling on the fly FLY FISHING

STEVE CHARLES

A

T this time of year some fly fishers are happy to sit by their fires and count the days to the opening of the next Trout season – September 6. While other fly fishers are starting to plan spring and summer trips, studying blue lines on maps and taking the winter down-time to tie the flies we’ll need in the months ahead. Personally I enjoy layering up and stalking the banks of the Victorian central highland lakes, chasing the illusive trout that are themselves stalking Australian smelt – freshwater whitebait. However, there are those who like to push the boundaries of fly fishing even further, and are leading the charge in fishing for Australian natives. Bendigo & District Fly Fishing Club president, Damian Keegan is one such angler. Damian recently fished the Loddon River with tackle and flies that are heavier than those commonly used when fishing for trout in Victoria, but if you are stalking Murray cod, you need to be

Damian caught a beautiful 70cm cod using a fly known as a Whistler Deceiver, slowly retrieved parallel to the bank while occasionally pausing his retrieve, allowing his fly to sink. The cod took it on the drop about a metre from the bank and was returned to the water after a few photographs. It took skill and the right gear

LOCAL business has reason to be pleased with the impact of advertising in the Bendigo Weekly. Hartley’s Hunting and Tackle World announced their new store opening in June with a four page feature in the Weekly. The re-launched business is owned by husband and wife team, Donna and Lindsay Hamley, and the coverage worked. “It was very successful, plenty of people saw the ad and came to see us,” co-owner Mr Hamley said. “The good thing about advertising in the Weekly, is

to handle a fish of this size – fight the fish too long and it may exhaust itself and not recover. Fly fishing need not be limited to mountain streams and trout. In the winter months, try fly fishing for freshwater natives or head to the beach and target bream in our beautiful estuaries. Brown dogs prove a reel winner at Green Lake

WO local anglers have recently experienced native fishing at its best during July with captures of their personal best Murray cod to date. Scott Ludeman cast up a 90cm cod from the Campaspe River around Elmore on a spinnerbait. Unfortunately the quality of the photograph left a lot to be desired and wasn’t worth reproducing due to excessive camera shake thanks to an excited photographer. Scott fishes both the Loddon and Campaspe rivers regularly and has had a bumper season landing about 20 cod this season. A fortnight later Bendigo Legion Angling Club president Andrew Wilkinson landed a healthy 67cm Murray cod from Lake Eppalock while casting the shallows in search

FRESHWATER FISHING

NICK ATYEO of golden perch on a vibe. I’ve also heard of another unsubstantiated report of a lucky crew who trolled up four legal sized cod in a session. Trolling deep diving lures along rocky banks should increase your chances of success if you’re targeting cod at Eppalock. For anglers in the know, Greens Lake near Corop has been worth a visit with reports of good size and number of golden perch being landed near the siphons. Jackal lures in the brown dog colour are the go apparently. Meanwhile younger anglers haven’t been missing out on the action either, with Reid Schilling enjoying an

outing with his cousins at the Kennington Reservoir where he was fortunate enough to land rainbow trout on Power Bait. Kennington Reservoir, Lake Tom Thumb and Forest Lake were recently stocked by DEPI a part of their regular school holiday trout stocking programme. Twenty three members of the Bendigo Legion Angling Club targeted Mulwala last month with dismal results, partially attributed to the extremely cold water temperature of eight degrees. Dion Hayes was the only angler fortunate enough to encounter a scale trolling up an undersized cod. Apparently the dismal result hasn’t dampened the anglers’ enthusiasm. Club officials are still expecting a good turnout later this month at Viewbank

In other news, site holders at Welshman’s Reef Caravan Park, at the southern end of Cairn Curran were advised that the park will be permanently closed from early November. The closure was announced after park management failed to meet environmental guidelines due to the prohibitive cost. Anglers and other users are concerned that the closure will further limit access to this popular destination and similar parks may face the same fate at other Goulburn Murray Water reservoirs. T IS winter and the days are freezing and it is so hard to get out into the cold and go for a ride or a run. So after all your good work over summer, and with the prospect of spring, don’t sit on the couch and put the weight back on. Keep up that fitness and workout at home with some fitness equipment from Mr Rental. Mr Rental has equipment that will suit all your needs. They have exercise bikes that you can either adjust manually or computer controlled bikes that program in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. There are cross trainers that give you a low impact workout that is like skiing,

ideal if you hope to get up to the snow this year. All this equipment is well maintained and nice and quiet so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and sizes of people. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125 kilograms and go at 16km/h and while that might not sound fast compared to a car at 16km/h you would travel more than five kilometres in 20 minutes. So if you want to stay fit this winter then give Daryl and Kristine at Mr Rental a call on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778. Mr Rental 80b Garsed Street, Bendigo.

INTER has arrived with some very wet and cold weather. How has your car been performing? Are you sliding or skidding around roundabouts or when taking off from lights? Is it harder to stop? Is it hard to start in the morning? These are the most common winter problems with vehicles according to the staff at Hattam Street Tyre & Mechanical. Brakes and tyres are among the most important safety items on your car and should be checked regularly. “If you are sliding around on the road you need your tyres checked,” Craig said. “Batteries also tend to die in winter as a cold car is harder to start.” Hattam Street Tyre and Mechanical

E-tax or My Tax users beware

H

&R Block has warned taxpayers about relying on the Australian Tax Office’s ‘pre-filling’ option when filing their 2014 tax returns. Pre-filling is a service provided by the ATO to make it easier to meet your tax obligations and claim entitlements. With pre-filling, your tax return is partially completed from information supplied by institutions and employers. Information can be incomplete because, an organisation has not supplied your data to the Tax Office, they could not match the data to your records or the data did not pass all processing checks. “The pre-filling option in tax returns should be used with caution, as the information provided in it is only as good as the timing of the information being sent by employers, banks, Centrelink and other organisations to the Tax Office,” H&R Block’s Jim Tonkin said. “If taxpayers rely on pre-filling information as the source of the income information to complete their tax return, and the information is not complete, the taxpayer may be audited and required to pay back their tax refund, along with interest on the money they incorrectly received.

“Information is being continually received by the Tax Office, and taxpayers need to check that all the information is there and correct and not assume it has arrived. “As a general rule taxpayers should not rely on the pre-fill information and they should also check their own records.” To overcome this dilemma H&R Block undertakes full interviews with all their clients and only use the pre-fill information to identify information they do not have. If the information is not there, H&R Block requests clients to check with the relevant organisation to confirm the income they received. “Remember it’s the taxpayer’s responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in a tax return,” Mr Tonkin said. “Signing the tax return confirms it is correct and complete and any omissions may result the tax office amending and charge interest and penalties.” H&R Block tax accountants, first floor 82 Mitchell Street Bendigo, 5441 6503 for all your taxation needs. www.hrblock.com.au

Hi my name is Banjo; I’m a typical Staffy in every way. I need an owner who can be with me all the time as I do suffer from separationn g. anxiety. I am an affectionate and friendly dog. I love people and I have lived with another male dog before so I can be quite social. An active family with older children who can spend a lot of their time with me would be my dream. Please come in and meet me.

WEEKLYsport Aiming for mental health

By JOEL PETERSON

Mental health within football clubs will be highlighted this week when the Bendigo Football netball league holds its first Footy 4 life round. Footy 4 life is a foundation set up by aFl Central Victoria operations manager Justin abrams, who has seen first-hand the effect that mental health issues can have on not only football clubs, but communities. Round 16 of the BFnl season will be headlined by the Kangaroo Flat versus Strathfieldsaye game at Beck legal Oval, that will be the round’s showcase game. “Unfortunately I started it because I experienced some hardship at my own footy club at north Ballarat,” he said this week. “I was lucky enough to play in a premiership under Michael troon, who was mid-40s, our premiership captain, who took his own life and left three young kids, a wife and a successful business. “that really rocked the foundations of our footy club at the time. Previous to that I played with two guys, both my age, who both suffered from mental health issues and comitted suicide. “So I thought, when Mick com-

mitted suicide, that enough was enough and I needed to do something about it.” abrams said that the emphasis on the round was about raising awareness of mental health issues within the football and wider communities. “the foundation is about participation in footy and using it to actually get out to footy clubs and make sure people are not only physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well,” abrams said. “I’ve seen it as a coach at both taC Cup and VFl level where kids came through and never got picked up in a draft and then stopped playing footy altogether, which is hugely disappointing. “the clubs have been fantastic, we have pushed the program and especially the partnership through Headspace to all the clubs and they have information on noticeboards and are more aware of it now which is great. “It’s about raising awareness, and if that makes people jump on the Footy 4 life website and find out how they can get involved or maybe it hits home that there is something that needs to be adressed, that is what we want.” More information on the foun-

Coming off a win against South Bendigo that vaulted them back into the top five, the Roos will have their work cut out for them against a redhot Storm in the Footy 4 life showcase game.

Baseball teams face off DanDenOnG and Sunraysia came away as the big winners from last weekend’s Baseball Victoria under-12 state winter championships held in Bendigo. the event was held at eaglehawk’s albert Roy Reserve, and saw eight teams battle it out in 24 games across the weekend. about 150 players made the trip to Bendigo from Victoria including teams from Dandenong, Diamond Valley, Ringwood, Geelong, latrobe Valley, Sunraysia as well as local participants from the Bendigo Baseball association. In the division one final, Dandenong defeated Ringwood in both sides’ final match of the weekend. Dandenong also won the Senior, under 16 and the under 14 (division one and division two) State Winter Championships in 2014 in a year to remember. In division two, the pitching of Coby Mitchell’s proved too strong as Sunraysia won the final by four runs, with Mitchell scoring the MVP award in the process. Sports and Recreation Minister Damian Drum was on hand to present the teams with their respective MVP win-

Strathfieldsaye has won its past 12 games, conceding more than 60 or more points in that span only twice, while a win for Flat would all but assure a finals position. eaglehawk will have an opportunity to jump back into the five when it meets Golden Square at Canterbury Park. Both sides are coming off disappointing losses and need wins to bolster their September chances.

at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne can prove it is a worthy premiership contender when the Bulldogs host Sandhurst, while Kyneton will try to snap a seven game losing streak against Castlemaine at Camp Reserve. In the game’s final round, Maryborough will aim for consecutive victories for the second time in season 2014, when it takes on South Bendigo at the QeO on Sunday.

Connor Charlten took home the award for the hosts while Diamond Valley’s Sam Skinner, Geelong’s Hayden People, latrobe Valley’s ty Hickford, Ringwood Black’s tyler evans and Ringwood Green’s Oswin Wang also took home awards.

In a massive boost for soccer in Bendigo, FC Bendigo will host aleague club Melbourne City in a pre-season friendly next month. the game will be played at epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve on tuesday, September 2, just over three weeks out from the start of the a-league season. FC Bendigo operations manager Brock Rogers is excited by the fact that the Manchester City backed club is venturing to Bendigo. “this is an exciting time for the sport of soccer in the region, after a lot of change over the past 12 months,” he said. “the introduction of a national Premier league team (FC Bendigo) in the area has really helped opened some doors and gathered the attention of not just the soccer community but also the entire Bendigo community. “there has been a lot of talk during the off-season about the list Melbourne City is putting together ahead of the 2014-15 Hyundai aleague season, and it will be great to watch those players in action up close.” the match will also provide a great opportunity for the players of the newly formed club, FC Bendigo to get experience playing against some of the best players in the world, possibly including Spanish

star David Villa. “Some of our most talented young players will get the chance to line-up on their idols, which will be a great learning experience for them,” he said. “the match will also provide an opportunity for some of our more experienced players at our club to get seen by an a-league club and its recruiting and talent identification staff. “Players like Matt Breeze, who has had a professional contract in the UK and alon Blumgart, who has been part of the a-league Youth system, will get another chance to showcase their talent in the hope of getting another chance at the highest level,”Rogers said. Rogers said the QeO and tom Flood Sports Centre had been ruled out as venues due to high traffic on them in coming months. “We are happy with the outcome, it’s a good solution,” he said. “Council have been great working through the whole process, and the hope now is that some of their big name players come for the game given its proximity to the aleague season and we get a good crowd there.” Melbourne City recently secured the signature of international marquee player Robi Koren, who inked his deal with the club this week.

Back on road for first game By JOEL PETERSON

TWO-TIME reigning WNBL champions Bendigo Spirit will yet again start its season on the road in a grand final re-match against Townsville on October 18. The 2014-15 Women’s National Basketball League fixture was released this week, and sees the Spirit playing 22 games over 17 rounds. Bendigo’s first home game comes against the University of Canberra Capitals in round two, with the match likely to be a TV broadcast game on Saturday, October 25. The Spirit will then play Melbourne at the State Basketball Centre the following day, before a round three rivalry clash with Dandenong at the Bendigo Stadium on Friday, October 31. With Logan Thunder leaving the competition after last season the league will only see eight teams competing with each side playing all but one opposing franchise

three times – playing the remaining side four times. Bendigo will face Melbourne Boomers in the extra matchup, designed to ensure every team has an even spread of home and away games. Bendigo again has a heavy slate of home games toward the end of the season, playing six of its last 10 games at home. The Spirit will also feature in three TV broadcast games, with three games – all at Bendigo Stadium – scheduled into the ABC’s preferred Saturday 3pm slot. The Spirit’s home finale is against Melbourne on Sunday, February 8, before its last game of the season against Canberra the following Friday at AIS Arena. The league’s finals series will begin on February 21, with the grand final on Sunday, March 8. “We have so many of the league’s biggest and brightest stars representing the Jayco Opals on the world stage it builds huge momen-

Concentration the aim for FC Bendigo ELIMINATING costly lapses will again be the focus for FC Bendigo when it meets Dandenong City this Saturday in round 19 of the National Premier Leagues Victoria season. Bendigo is coming off a 2-0 loss to second-placed North Geelong last week in which it made two costly mistakes in set pieces, conceding goals both times. Martin’s focus for the bulk of the year has been eliminating those types of mistakes, and it is again this week against the midtable Dandenong outfit. “It was just a few instances

It was just a few instances where we lacked the right mindset where we lacked the right mindset and composure, and probably a bit of inexperience showed up,” Martin said. “They were a match hardened side and they played a very physical game. Did they outperform us? I would say no, they probably only had three or four genuine chances but we struggled to break them down at the other end too. “It was just one of those things where we came up against a good side full of confidence and made a few mistakes that they capitalised on because we were just that one per cent off on the day. “That mindset, and playing with confidence will be keys for this week against Dandenong City.” Bendigo sits 12th on the NPL1 table, with five wins, 12 losses and three draws to its name, while Dandenong (7-7-5) is eighth. With a tough eight weeks

without a break ahead of the side, Martin is not allowing himself to look too far down the track. “I’m not going to say anything like ‘we need to win four of our last eight’ or anything like that, it is just about setting smaller goals from week to week,” Martin said. “We have eight weeks left and obviously we want a result from each of those, but we have things to work on and they will be our focus.” Dandenong has won its past three games and is undefeated in its last five, and presents an even greater challenge as Bendigo hits the road on Saturday. “It will obviously be a challenge, but if we make adjustments from last week and eliminate those mistakes we think we can get a result,” he said. “They are in good form and will not make it easy for us but if we can create chances and not give them any easy opportunities hopefully we can come away with the win.” TOUGH MATCH: FC Bendigo’s under 20 team played at Eaglehawk on the weekend. Valley WNBL in a significant coup for the league. In addition we have WNBA stars such as Kelsey Griffin (Bendigo Spirit), Monica Wright (Dandenong Rangers) and Lindsay

Moore (West Coast Waves) looking make an impact. “This season promises to be one of the most competitive and exciting in recent memory.”

Braves sorting positions FINALS will be on the line for the Bendigo Braves this weekend, in a vital clash with Kilsyth on Saturday. The fourth-placed Braves meet the Cobras (third) on Saturday night at Bendigo Stadium, in the second last round of the SEABL season. A win would widen the gap to Frankston in fifth, the Blues are a game behind the Braves but hold the head to head advantage over Bendigo and have a game in hand. The Braves met Kilsyth four weeks ago, losing that clash 6682. The Bendigo Lady Braves’ clash with Kilsyth will be their last for the season, giving them an important week off before finals. The Lady Braves go into the round one game clear of Hobart, who have a game in hand and the head to head split, on top of the South conference. A win would see them cement their top spot, before waiting for results to go their way next week to determine whether they will get home court advantage in the finals. The Lady Braves v Kilsyth clash tips off at 6pm on Saturday night, with the men’s game from 8pm.

Jack Haig shows strength to make powerful start in European campaign By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO cyclist Jack Haig’s European campaign with the Jayco-AIS World Tour Academy team got off to a bang last week with a second place finish in the Tour of Alsace. Haig also claimed the best young rider’s jersey in the six-stage UCI 2.2 rated event, finishing six seconds behind Czech winner Karel Hnik. Haig went into Saturday’s fourth stage 33 seconds behind the lead but after a third placed finish on the stage moved up to second, and was able to hold his position in an action-packed final stage. The 2014 Subaru Australia National Road Series champion finished 23rd in the Czech Cycling Tour a week prior to the race throughout the Alsace region of France, and was second in the mountains classification in the Czech event. In his final race with his Australian-based Avanti Racing Team, the 20-year-old was third, and won the Tour of Toowoomba prior to that before jetting off as part of Austra-

tional representative teams featuring mostly up-and-coming riders, and a host of big names have taken out the race in previous editions. Among them are 2014 Giro d’Italia winner and 2013 Tour de France runner up Nairo Quintana,

Tour de France winners Miguel Indurain and Greg LeMond as well as longtime tour contender Denis Menchov. “Overall it was a good tour with both Jack and Rob showing a lot of potential,” Jayco-AIS WTA

coach James Victor wrote on the Cycling Australia website. “A big August has now commenced with four one-sday races in Italy planned, leading into the important Tour de l’Avenir starting on August 23.”
