Labor stumps up for stadium funding

By ANTHONY RADFORD

THE Labor Party will fund the redevelopment of the Bendigo Stadium if elected in November. Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews will make the announcement in Bendigo today. Mr Andrews will promise $5 million of funding for the $16.5m plan.

With the stadium prepared to spend up to $11m on the project, the announcement means it will go ahead if Labor wins on November 29. The Bendigo Weekly revealed in July the stadium is a key player in the city’s economy.

The first stage of the plan is to build three new courts that can be transformed into a 3000-seat showcourt, and 12 new netball courts outside. Stage two is increasing the showcourt to 4000 seats. With an election around the

corner, recent lobbying of candidates and parties has been hectic. Mr Andrews said under his plan, local companies would have construction and supply priority. “Victoria is the sporting capital of the world,” he said. “It’s part of our culture and our

identity. Bendigo must be a part of it, too. “Only Labor will upgrade this cramped stadium and open the door for more major sporting events.” Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the redevelopment was overdue.

THE State Government says Bendigo residents wanting to buy their first home have received a boost following Treasurer Michael O’Brien’s announcement this week of a 50 per cent stamp duty concession for first-home buyers. Mr O’Brien says for the past four years, stamp duty concessions have helped tens of thousands of Victorians save thousands of dollars off the cost of their first home. In 2013-14, Bendigo first home buyers saved a total $534,432 by taking advantage of the previous stamp duty discount. Mr O’Brien said Monday’s 50 per cent stamp duty concession announcement builds upon the government’s 2010 election commitment to reduce stamp duty by 20 per cent in 2011-12; 30 per cent in 2012-13; and 40 per cent in 2013-14. He said almost 660,000 eligible first-home buyers have been helped through stamp duty concession since it was introduced in 2011 on properties up to the value of $600,000. “This boosted stamp duty concession will make home ownership more affordable and support jobs by stimulating the housing construction industry in the Bendigo region,” Mr O’Brien said. As an example, eligible firsthome owners in Bendigo and across Victoria will save up to $9485 in stamp duty on dwell-

Educators call for funds

By ANTHONY RADFORD

THREE leading Bendigo educators have urged governments to increase public school funding to relieve Bendigo’s poverty stress. Last week, the Bendigo Weekly revealed about 30 per cent of local households earn less than $600 a week, well below the poverty line. An analysis of the latest Federal Government data shows locals receive almost 87,000 welfare payments every payday. Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters has urged local leaders to reset their policy focus to concentrate more on fighting poverty. The city’s educators believe

education is the key to breaking the poverty cycle, and at the moment governments aren’t listening to that message. Weeroona College principal Leanne Preece, Eaglehawk Secondary College principal Noel Claridge and Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal Dale Pearce all believe the solution is better-targeted funding. “If we want to make a difference we need to give some schools more funding than others,” Ms Preece said. “This antiquated system of giving our private schools as much or more money does not make sense to me. “It bugs me that the current state and federal governments aren’t prepared to act on that.” Ms Preece said despite the Gonski review and political support, she had no extra money in this year’s budget, and has “no

idea” what will be in next year’s. Mr Claridge said education funding should target those who need it most. “It comes down to what do we want for the young people of our community and do we think at the moment we provide equal opportunity through the current funding system?” he said.

“Some kids don’t get the same access and equity around education because of their social disadvantage,” he said. “As a community we need to ask do we want that addressed or not? “Sometimes that means targeting areas of need, then the funding model needs to be ap-

This antiquated system of giving our private schools as much or more money does not make sense to me “If people say we do, I will argue with them until I am blue in the face. “The most significant issue for us as city of Bendigo, we know education is the key to success for 99 per cent of the population.” Mr Claridge said it was clear there was not a level playing field in education opportunities.

propriate for that. “It is not.” Mr Pearce said targeting earlychildhood funding was the most vital, but there were cuts in the offing. He said a lack of targeted funding at secondary level was hurting his school. “Victorian schools are under-

The iconic local event is a joint initiative between St John of God Hospital and Athletics Bendigo, tying in with Fathers Day, the fun run aims to highlight health issues that men face. With only two days to go, event organisers are hoping for a solid turnout, estimating at least 400 people will join in the fun. Kicking off at 9am on Sunday morning, entrants have the choice of participating in a 6.8 kilometre run or a 2.5 km walk. St John of God Hospital’s deputy director, and keen runner, Mark Nally has ran in the past two events. “It’s for a great cause and it is a great team-building exercise,” he said. Businesses are encouraged to get behind the cause and put together a team to join in the Fun Run. “There is a prize for the best, or funniest, team outfit of the day,” he said. Last year’s event raised $4000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and organisers hope this year the Fun Run will raise $5000. Well known local runner, and

funded compared to the rest of the nation,” he said. “There is a whole range of things we are not able to do because of that.” All three principals said they were seeing increased welfare needs among their students and families. “We are finding there is an increased level of need among families we support here at school,” Mr Pearce said. “The argument is that you create enough economic development and growth that the benefits trickle down. “What we are seeing nationally, and here in Bendigo, is it doesn’t necessarily trickle down. “We argue education is something that can help break that. “There needs to be more equity funding on the table to help students when the disadvantage exists.”

member of the Bendigo Harriers, Keith Macdonald hopes the Fun Run will encourage men to think about their health. “I have four brothers and three sons, and the research statistics show me that a third of us will be faced with the diagnoses of prostate cancer,” Mr Macdonald said.

Walkers will step out from Dai Gum San to begin the walk, while the runners make tracks from the Eaglehawk Town Hall. All entrants finish up at Dai Gum San, where the Lions Club will be ready to dish out breakfast to all participants. Mr Macdonald is also the

Bendigo Prostate Cancer Support Group president and said group members would hand out health information packs and showbags. Those who finish the event will receive a medallion sponsored by Poyser Motors. Participants can enter online at www.athleticsbendigo.org.au - Jasmin Bradshaw

BENDIGO’S ice experience was noted in the Victorian Inquiry into the Supply and Use of Methamphetamines. Bendigo Police Superintendent Daryl Clifton said staff member reports suggested “the rise of ice involvement in family violence is ‘astronomical’”. “There is a direct and palpable link between ice and domestic violence,” La Trobe Valley Magistrates’ Court magistrate Clive Alsop said. Bendigo paramedic Richard Marchingo said he was concerned about ice users’ tendency “to manifest violent and psychotic behaviour” in contrast to his experience with heroin users. A Bendigo region ambulance officer said ice users were often professionals or tradespeople and from fairly stable “middle-class backgrounds”. The inquiry warned exaggerated, alarmist reporting of the issue contributed to popularising the drug and glamourising it. However, most witnesses who gave evidence, especially AOD workers, emergency clinicians, police and ambulance officers were more concerned about alcohol use. The report noted they were, “Primarily concerned about the effects of problematic alcohol consumption in the community - what they (witnesses)perceive as the ‘real drug problem.’”

Jobless rate drops Past four years better than the previous four: ABS

By CHRISTINE MCGINN

BENDIGO’S unemployment rate has dropped since the State Liberal Government was elected. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data, the average Bendigo three-month employment rate since the Liberal Government won office in 2010 is 5.98 per cent. In the previous government’s last term, the average three-month unemployment rate for Bendigo over the four-year period was 6.7 per cent. Treasurer Michael O’Brien said the government was committed to creating jobs especially in regional Victoria.

“Projects such as the $630 million Bendigo hospital ... not only create jobs they provide much needed infrastructure for regional areas,” he said. “More and more people are making the choice to live in cities such as Bendigo. “The Coalition Government is driving growth and creating opportunities right across regional Victoria. “The Napthine Government is

making it easier for businesses to create jobs and boost investment by reducing payroll tax and cutting workcover premiums.” Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the previous Labor government governed during a Global Financial Crisis. She said the current government had benefitted from 11 years of good economic government. She said the current government’s $1.2 billion worth of “TAFE

sector cuts” made it harder for young people to obtain the skills needed for jobs. “Course fees have tripled in some cases and courses have been cut in areas of high skill need,” she said. “We also now have a Federal Liberal Government set to make it harder for young people under 30 who are unemployed and much harder and more expensive for people who want to get a tertiary education. “Young people are facing a grim future if the Victorian Liberals remain in charge “They have no plan for growing jobs in Victoria.”

GREATER Bendigo councillors have claimed more than $100,000 in out-of-pocket expenses since they were elected in 2012. According to a Freedom of Information request, councillors were allowed to claim childcare, parking, internet, travel allowance even lunch meetings relating to their role. Cr Elise Chapman, the only councillor with a young child, racked up the highest bill at $44,119.07. Cr Chapman spent more than $36,000 on travel and about $7300 on childcare fees

that, again, we see Bendigo’s generosity come to the fore. More than $1200 for such a worthy cause is brilliant. “While it may be a little silly, the fact almost $100,000 has been raised in Australia for MND research is worth the stupidity.” Radford nominated councillors Elise Chapman and Lisa Ruffell to take the challenge next, tipping the water on each other. Case said he wasn’t a vengeful person but would nominate Doug Lougoon to take the chal-

lenge. He urged Rotary clubs and real estate agents across the city to donate money to Mr Lougoon’s challenge in aid of Motor Neurone Disease. ‘’It’s great to see this combined effort raised more than $1000 for Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria,’’ Mr Case said. ‘’We thank everyone who supported us with this challenge. ‘’We also thank those sadistic, ah, sorry, supportive people who have turned out for the event.’’

Cr Mark Weragoda was reimbursed more than $9000, also noting travel allowance as the most expensive claim across his three terms. Whipstick Ward councillor Peter Cox dipped in at $6690.22, again travel dominating the bill. Mayor Barry Lyons was reimbursed for $5659.17 in outof-pocket expenses with travel and parking drilling up the cost. Eppalock Ward councillor Helen Leach spent $1546.86 out-of-pocket on travel and internet costs to research and contact the constituents. Cr James Williams spent about $1300 only on travel expenses relating to his role. Cr Lisa Ruffell spent $415.91 while Cr Rod Campbell was out of pocket less than a pineapple at $32.73.

By DIANNE DEMPSEY

FEDERAL Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has written to Premier Denis Napthine urging the State Government to rethink its mental health sector funding cuts. Mr Shorten wrote to Dr Napthine after a visit to Bendigo where he met alcoholic and bipolar sufferer Mary Leach. The Bendigo Weekly reported late last month Ms Leach belonged to a government-funded program helping her and other addicts get their lives back on track. Mr Shorten was moved by Ms Leach’s story, and immediately con-

Free wi-fi lost in the ether

CHECK IT OUT: Adam Hutton in the new Kennington store. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN.

A MAJOR timeline in the State Government’s free Bendigo wi-fi timetable has passed by. The government announced in March it would roll out free wi-fi to Melbourne’s CBD. Days later, believed to be in a hurried fashion, it made similar announcements for the centre of Bendigo and Ballarat. The announcement was to seek expressions of interest “to pilot fast, reliable and free wifi services” for the next three to five years. The government’s own State Development, Business and Innovation website listed contracts as being expected to be announced in July or August. The technology is expected to be housed partly on Greater Bendigo council-owned light-

IT’S been a mere two weeks since its opening, but Woolworths Kennington is already a hit with locals. Twenty thousand customers have passed through the doors since August 27, and store manager Adam Hutton said customer response has been good. “A lot of customers have come through and the response has been very positive. They love it,” Mr Hutton said. Mr Hutton said the new pizza bar in particular was a hot hit. “It’s very, very popular,” he said. “Our pizza makers have been going non-stop from day one.” The store’s new design layout has also gained praise. “Many customers have commented on the store’s layout and its brightness and freshness,” Mr Hutton said. Mr Hutton said Woolworths had received a warm reception from Kennington residents. “Response has been that this is the best thing for this side of town,” he said. Woolworths Kennington is open seven days a week from 7am to midnight.

poles and buildings. In June, council said “a preferred wi-fi tenderer is expected to be announced within weeks”. During the March announcement, Premier Denis Napthine said contracts would be awarded “by midyear”. The EOI respondents were invited to “submit innovative alternatives and options that would ensure the sustainability of a freefor-use service”. A spokesman for Technology Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said negotiations with preferred tenderers were under way. He said the government was expecting to have an announcement by October. TEN-YEAR-OLD Jaxon Cooper is bravely fighting one of the deadliest paediatric cancers, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. The rare brain-stem tumour attacks children aged five to 10, and there is no known cure. The pons, where the tumour is located, controls the functions we need to live including breathing, swallowing, heart rate, movement and hearing. On diagnosis, 90 per cent of children are only given nine to 12 months to live. September marks World Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, with Go Gold Australia volunteers helping to create awareness. Go Gold Australia’s national campaign hopes to encourage people to take action, create awareness and find a cure. Grandmother and Bendigonian Viv Cooper said childhood cancer research was not adequately funded with the same palliative treatment – radiation – for the past 40 years. “There has been no progress in the past 40 years for an appropriate treatment for battling this cancer,” she said. “Radiation is not a cure. This is not good enough.” Twenty children a year are diagnosed with DIPG. “DIPG has the worst prognosis. I hope one day there is a treatment for the cancer not just a pallative treatment,” Ms Cooper said. “We need to make a difference for our children. I hope no child has to share Jaxon’s story.” Ms Cooper urged the community to donate to The Isabella and Marcus Fund Paediatric Brainstem Fund to help find a cure. Fire season hots up

BY CHRISTINE MCGINN

BENDIGO has been warned this coming fire season will be more fierce than last year’s. Bendigo fire season temperatures are set to rise above last year’s temperatures with a lack of rainfall fuelling the conditions. The Southern Australia Seasonal Bushfire Outlook 2014-15 report warned Bendigo needed to brace for hotter temperatures and less rain this year. Bendigo had “very much below average” rainfall, “very much above average” temperatures to July 31. The city only has a 35 per cent chance of exceeding the median rainfall and a 75 per cent chance of exceeding the median maximum temperature from this month to November. The report said the upcoming bushfire season would host “above normal season in many areas of central, north and western Victoria”. The report found above-average rainfall across the state was unlikely and the fire season was expected to break earlier. “Areas with long-term rainfall deficits run from the west of Mel-

bourne to the central Wimmera and also north through Central Victoria into the Mallee. Another band exists extending from the north east of Melbourne to the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range,” the report said. “Climatic signals indicate a likely return to warm conditions in spring. There is no strong signal on rainfall, and agencies will be closely monitoring rainfall amounts across the state.” Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said the forecast highlighted the need to be fire ready. “The forecast at this stage is for above-average temperatures across southern Australia during spring, and we are preparing for an above normal bushfire season for Victoria,” he said. Mr Lapsley said the Central Victoria would be one of five areas hardest hit this fire season. “Areas including Ballarat, Bendigo Seymour and around Melbourne including Geelong and Healesville have grass, bush and higher populations, a combination that will challenge Victoria this season,” he said.

Across Victoria, a short-term deficit would emerge in a “broad band” to the north, extending to the Great Dividing Range, even in coastal and southern Victoria. Country Fire Authority Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said the report was significant and indicated a serious fire season. “Firstly it reminds us that August has been a very dry month across much of Victoria and parts of New South Wales,” he said. “Rainfall predictions suggest it’s going to be a drier than normal season.” CFA community education coordinator Paul Tangey said all summers are “high-risk seasons” for fire. “Fires are unpredictable and plans can fail but back-up plans can save lives,” he said. “The main reasoning for the conditions is that there was a lower than average rainfall in winter, meaning the area dried out quicker than usual.” Locals can find out more about the fire conditions, fire danger ratings or creating your own fire safety plan visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Defence work may head OS A NEW defence contract awarded to Australian Defence Apparel last week may be delivered offshore, not in Bendigo. An Australian defence source and spokesperson for the Defence Minister David Johnston told The Weekly the low-carriage vests and backpacks could be made at ADA’s premises in Vietnam. ADA chief executive officer Matthew Graham said he was still discussing the details of the tender and it was “still early days”. “We were only just notified (last week). We just need to understand the volumes for the items, such as the low-carriage ensemble vests which we already do and the backpacks which are new to us,” he said. “We have to understand the capability and scale up accordingly. “The vests have been made in Bendigo. “I am still waiting to sit down with the Defence Materiel Organisation and understand the capability and then we can up scale accordingly.” Mr Johnston announced last week, ADA had won the first contract of a $170 million tender to kit out our soldiers. Formerly a Bendigo company,

ADA was bought in 2011 by a Canadian and Sydney joint venture. “We will make the carriage vests, the integrated vests, pouches, ballistic plates and the backpacks (as part of the contract),” Mr Graham said. “We have been making these items for some time and its evolution for us and have added improvements.” Mr Graham said winning the tender was a “major victory” for ADA and the company’s longevity. “We have a Bendigo facility, that can be up-scaled very quickly,” he said. Mr Graham said the uniforms had been designed with help from soldiers in the field to ensure they are “fit for purpose, comfortable and effective”. The first 1000 sets of load carriage equipment are expected to be delivered in May 2015. Mr Graham said the company had a “strong relationship” with the local community, with most products made here for a “long time”. “Bendigo has become a mini-hub for defence,” Mr Graham said.

High times with Harold

By BONNY BURROWS

A LIFE-SIZE giraffe is teaching local students about healthy living. Healthy Harold, the Life Education’s mascot, has been teaching Girton Grammar junior school students about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. This week, the Life Education Australia mobile classroom has been parked at the gates of the school, and students have been visiting the truck to learn about nutrition, body systems and relationships. Girton junior school head Don Thompson said it is never too early to start to teach children the basics about how to have a healthy body and a healthy mind. “If we start teaching primary

aged children how to make strong decisions about small things, as they get older they will be in the best possible position to make good decisions when the stakes are higher,” he said. Mr Thompson said Life Education Australia’s different approach to learning has been a hit with the students. “The children have loved getting out of their normal classroom and learning how to make the best choices possible when faced with a range of issues,” he said. “Healthy Harold the life-size giraffe mascot, has been particularly popular and helped to keep the younger students enthused and engaged.” Life Education Australia has been visiting schools around Australia since 1979.

GOOD TIDINGS: Maree Edwards at Kalianna this week. Edwards, have put this issue on the agenda and put this school on the map.” The school recently produced a video, featuring its students, pleading for funds. School council president Greg Ralph said nothing had been done to the school since 1973. “We regularly spend $100,000 per year on what is currently there. The De-

partment of Education gave $346,379 for maintenance works last year. That will help us with leaking toilets and dangerous doors,” he said. “In terms of modern facilities, we need up-to-date, purpose-built facilities for special education needs. “It is not so much the equipment. “But such a range of children with autism,

wheelchairs and disadvantaged backgrounds they need specific facilities like quiet rooms to enable teachers to bring out the best in a range of kids. “We know planning has to be done and a longterm plan developed for the school but we would like to see a commitment from both sides of government for a purpose-built school in the works.”

Spotlight on health BENDIGO went blue for nine days in a bid to raise awareness for about prostate cancer. The city’s iconic buildings, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo Tourist Information Centre and the RSL Memorial Hall donned the blue last Friday night. The buildings were lit up to remind men to check their prostates and their general health. Laser Electrical and Power Audio/ Visual powered up the historic sites across the CBD to encourage men to be proactive about their health. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Charing Cross fountain also went blue on Sunday night in support of the cause. Bendigo Prostate Cancer Support Group spokesperson Neil Macdonald said the initiative aimed to encourage men to talk to their doctor. The BPCSG banner was also hung on the Bendigo Bank building to recognise men’s health last week. Men can also find out more about their health at the Bendigo Community Health Services on 5434 4300.

THE Victorian Opposition has vowed to take the first steps in fixing Bendigo’s Kalianna Special School. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards visited the school this week, pledging support. She said a Labor government will provide $1 million towards the completion of a masterplan for the expansion and redevelopment of specialist facilities at the school, in consultation with the community. She said Labor would work towards the full rebuild of the school. “Parents have called for an upgrade, presenting a petition with 4200 signatures, but the Liberals still haven’t listened,” she said. “Only Labor will fix Kalianna so our kids get the facilities they need. “Kalianna is a great school and Labor’s plan will help it do so much more.” Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan was also on hand for the announcement. “I’m so proud that parents and teachers at Kalianna, working with Maree

Learning hits the right note LOCAL students are getting musical with the SmArts program. Students from Bendigo Senior Secondary and Eaglehawk Secondary colleges are taking part in an intensive eight-week musical program delivered by the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in partnership with The Smith Family. The workshops, held by tutorial staff from MCM, will enable students to develop their musical skills across a broad range of instruments and explore future study and career options. Eaglehawk Secondary College Performing Arts co-ordinator, Judith Chalmers, described the program as a unique opportunity for students to extend and challenge themselves in their musical studies. “Our school provides many extra curriculum opportunities for the students, however, the cost of musical instruments and tuition levies is an issue for

Years marked

STANDING proudly, Bill Bowery sports his latest medal recently awarded to him for an amazing 65 years of service with the CFA. His colleague, Ken Deveraux also received a long-service award, for more than 45 years of service; that 65 years is hard to beat. During his time with the CFA Mr Bowery has served as captain, has been leader of the championship brigade and serves as a role model for the CFA. Mr Bowery said his first memories of fighting fires was as a young boy when they used hessian bags and green bushes. He first joined the CFA when he was 19. He recalls the horrors of Black Friday in 1939 and more recently Black Saturday in Bendigo 2009. “I was directing traffic and keeping supplies and equipment up to the fire fighters,” he said. “We had an excellent result really. While lots of houses were lost, a lot were saved. If it weren’t for the volunteers we would have been in real trouble.

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

“I’ve also experienced some sad moments. There have been drownings, house fires. I’ve rushed into a burning house many times.” While Mr Bowery has never been burnt he says they have lost firemen over the years who have been killed fighting fires. Both Mr Bowery and Mr Deveraux emphasise the community nature of the CFA. “If a family has a problem within our CFA community we are there to help them,”Mr Deveraux said. “Sometimes the young ones have a hard time and we keep an eye on them, make sure the family is looked after.” The overall membership of the Kangaroo Flat CFA is about 65 people although only some will actually be fire fighters. Twenty five per cent of their membership is female. Funding is an issue and the CFA spends much of its time fund raising. Both men conclude that their many years of service has been more than rewarded.

GET ready to pump up your tyres, dust off your bike and ride for a good cause. Ride for Dad is a 12 kilometres to 18km bike ride that will take place on September 6, as part of Men’s Health Week. Families are encouraged to take part in the event, which get under way at 10am from Longlea Lane, Longlea. There will be a free barbecue lunch at midday and live music until 2pm. Event coordinator Steven Abbott said participants of all riding levels are invited to participate. “The idea is that participants

ride as far as they wish. The O’Keefe Rail Trail is relatively flat and very safe, protected from the road and passing cars, so it’s the perfect ride for young families or those people who don’t want to ride too far or aren’t too confident on a bike,”Mr Abbott said. The ride will take participants through the townships of Junortoun and Axedale. Mr Abbott said the communities were looking forwarding to welcoming new visitors to the area. “Communities are excited to take part in this event and look forward to welcoming people to

the trail, as the ride is also an opportunity to showcase the great work of local residents who are passionate about their townships,” he said. Works continue on the $3.2 million extension of the O’Keefe Rail Trail from Axedale to Heathcote. This is part of the council’s commitment to building more bicycle and walking paths to improve community overall health and wellbeing. For catering and car parking purposes, the city asks Ride for Dad participants to register their interest at www.bendigo.vic.gov. au/healthytogether

Lanterns brighten the day LANTERNS will light up the annual Harvest Moon Festival celebrations tomorrow. The festival gives thanks for food, future prosperity, health, families and friends. The festival will tell the story of The Legend of the Moon Lady: Hou-Yi shoots the Sun with traditional and contemporary dance, music, martial arts, and Chinese minority costumes woven into the festival. The Bendigo Chinese Association Lion, Dragon and Plum Blossom Dance

teams will showcase the region’s best traditional Chinese cultural performances. School and community groups will make lanterns with an award for the best group’s lanterns. Chinese people celebrate the festival when the moon is at its fullest and brightest for the entire year. In China, the festival marks when people return home to their families after the end of the harvest season. But in Australia, it marks the end of winter.

The Bendigo Chinese Association will host the event at Dai Gum San, Chinese Precinct from 5.30pm. Families will be able to make lanterns with the BCA Lion Team workshop and the performances roaring at 6.30pm. Locals are told to rug up, bring a chair and take part in the multicultural event. Crossing lines I NOTE that the Liberal Party letter writers have been in overdrive regarding the announcement of a public crossing for Elmore. Unsurprisingly, they are not telling your readers the full story. I have been working hard to support the Elmore community’s push for a safer public crossing at Railway Place. Earlier this year after meeting with residents who were concerned that their request was being repeatedly ignored by the State Government, I sent their petition to the Minister for Roads and raised the matter in parliament. In his letter back to me the Minister said that a pedestrian crossing was not being considered at this time as the existing crossing was adequate. This was not good enough and I indicated to the Elmore community that I would continue to fight for a crossing. It was pleasing that soon after this the Napthine Government finally responded to this lobbying and community pressure and announced that VicRoads will install a crossing. The Napthine Government only acted after this was made an issue in parliament and with the Minister. The local community can be assured that I will not be deterred by the negativity of the Liberal letter writers and continue to stand up for our local community. Jacinta Allan MP, Member for Bendigo East

Vale Graeme Elvey ONE of Bendigo’s most respected local government administrators, Graeme Elvey, passed away after suffering ill health. Graeme was a man of honour and integrity and was always a man of his word who went out of his way to assist others.

Graeme retired as CEO of Rural City of Marong, formerly known as the Shire of Marong. He was vehemently opposed to council amalgamation and fought it to the bitter end and it was only after his council’s court case was withdrawn that the Greater Bendigo council was formed. He was affectionately known as “Mr Apex” for his long involvement having been president and life member of the Bendigo club and went on to be district governor and zone president. He and Ritchie Travaskis went on to start the Apex Association in the Phillipines which is still going strong today. One of the many attributes Graeme will be remembered for is his loyalty to colleagues, councillors and friends and his sincere love for his wife Bonnie and their children, Margaret and Daryl. Graeme will sorely be missed by all and his contribution to Apex, local government and the Bendigo community has helped make our city a better and fairer place to live. He was also a passionate supporter of Essendon Football Club and on retirement loved his game of lawn bowls. Graeme really was an unsung hero but his contribution was immense. Keith Sutherland, Bendigo

A city in a park IT is now critical for the Wellsford State Forest to be added to the Greater Bendigo National Park. Saw log timber harvesting being proposed by DEPI for the coming year would see the decimation of the significant old growth big trees coup, and its ecological values. Such large old trees are very rare in box ironbark forests due to past management practices.

Community sentiment has been strongly in favour of better preservation of the forest by adding it to Greater Bendigo’s National Park. Recently community activities in the park have attracted hundreds of locals, of all ages, all keen to see for themselves what a jewel we have on our doorstep. The habitat for mammals and birds and nectar provided by these scarce remnants of our decimated forests are all critical services for maintaining biodiversity and natural values. The creation of a Wellsford National Park is the only way to protect these vital environmental benefits. In addition to the logging operations and firewood harvesting the Wellsford Forest has been subjected to prescribed burning over the past three years. The long history and legacy of logging means that we must act now to properly protect the remaining box ironbark forests, due to their national significance and vulnerability to the impacts of a changing climate. The taxpayer is subsidising a “cut it down and convert it to cash bonanza” of our natural environment for the interests of a few, particularly those who are profiting from the changes to firewood harvesting regulations under the Coalition Government in Victoria. In the process the rug is being pulled out from under the feet of farmers trying to establish a plantation firewood business locally. The Greens’ push for the Wellsford to become national park will protect our assets for the whole community to enjoy for generations to come, which is a far better return for our future. ONE year ago I was honoured and excited to be elected as your Federal Member of Parliament. Today, I am still just as excited and honoured as I was on election day. Twelve months ago today (September 5, 2013) there was only one day left. Most of the hard work had been done. Fast forward a year and I am settled into the role of federal MP. It’s the kind of role where you are always learning. People who have been in the political game for 20 years still daily come across things they’ve never heard or dealt with before. About 20 weeks of the year are spent in Canberra. Canberra is a strange little world of its own, where lobbyists stalk the halls and Clive Palmer rules the Members’ Dining Lounge. In my first year in parliament, I have made more than

interest groups who keep Bendigo afloat, and who ensure central Victoria is a vibrant and connected place to live. Places like the Long Gully Community House, Bendigo Family Financial Services and Haven; Home, Safe who help the vulnerable and those in need. I can’t wait to see how much more I learn and experience in the next year in the job them what they’d like to see from their elective representatives. The overwhelming response from students when they come out of question time is “tell everyone to stop yelling at one another”. But my favourite day of Canberra weeks is Friday, when I am back in the Bendigo electorate and I can get to the community-house lunches. This is the best bit of my job – meeting the people, organisations, businesses and

bringing incalculable benefits to our society. Then there’s Central Victoria’s multitude of festivals– the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival, Bendigo Writers Festival, Eaglehawk Dahlia and Arts Festival, Bendigo Festival of Cultures just to name a few. There are countless many others out there. I am so proud to represent the Bendigo electorate. I can’t wait to see how much more I learn and experience in the next year in the job.

Learning curve IT is one thing to simply highlight the true nature of poverty in Bendigo, but it is another thing to come up with ways to address it. When Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters called on city and government leaders to reset their policy focus, she was searching for solutions to ease poverty. The Bendigo Weekly began a push last week to not just highlight the problem, but try and present solutions. Bendigo’s educators have put forward their views this week, and it is a surprisingly easy one. They want education funding to be directed where it is most needed. It would come as a surprise to many to know this doesn’t happen. Schools and kindergartens with a high proportion of disadvantaged children don’t attract anymore mainstream funding than others. Anyone who works in the welfare or education sector knows one of the highest factors of poverty is lack of opportunity, and it is usually inter-generational. They all believe the only way to break that evil cycle is to provide educational opportunities throughout school life.

Principals Leanne Preece, Dale Pearce and Noel Claridge this week told the Weekly they were continually in a fight to push for targeted funding. Not just for their schools, but for preschools, primary schools, everywhere it is needed. The Gonski reforms highlighted this, and it

Priorities were highlighted and funding provided. Bendigo Health chief executive officer John Mulder is continually looking at priority areas and working out where he needs to direct existing money, or ask for more funding. Yet, governments are too scared to move fund-

Equity in health is a given. Why isn’t equity in education? seems it is a long way from being delivered. It is an odd concept, especially when you look at the health sector. In health, money and services are directed to areas that need it most. Governments don’t seem to hesitate to fund health services when there is a clear lack of services, or poor outcomes in a community. Ten years ago, there weren’t enough GPs in Bendigo. It was a crisis. Governments, health bodies and local leaders got together and a solution was found. Today, it could be argued, there are too many.

ing around the education system to help those most in need. Equity in health is a given. Why isn’t equity in education? We have great schools in Bendigo, with brilliant facilities and inspirational teachers, but that isn’t enough. Children in Eaglehawk need to be able to have the same opportunities as those in Strathdale. Can anyone cite a reason why they shouldn’t? Being poor doesn’t make you stupid. However, believing in a system that allows children to slip further into intergenerational poverty does.

Not so super I HAD my hair cut this week, and in more ways than one. So while my mop has been cropped and the ever increasing number of grey hairs tidied up a tad, the more concerning haircut I and almost every other working Australian received came courtesy of the federal government and the Palmer United Party. Thanks to a deal cooked up to garner support to eliminate the mining tax, increases in the amount of compulsory superannuation guarantee payments into the accounts of millions of ordinary Australians will now be further delayed, likely costing every single one of us thousands of dollars from our superannuation nest eggs. For its part, the government says a majority of Australians no doubt wanted the mining tax removed, and it pledged to do so prior to winning last year’s election. But no one told any of us that supporting the removal of the mining tax would cost the average worker tens of thousands of dollars. There have been claims from the business sector that the delay in increasing employer superannuation contributions to 12 per cent by 2019 until 2025 is good for business and that it will allow business operators to hire more staff. That remains to be seen, and for many smaller businesses seems unlikely. For example, a small business with a $1 million payroll and about 20 staff will save $10,000 a year under the delayed increase – hardly reason enough to rush out and start hiring new workers.

The other problem here is the employer superannuation guarantee scheme was designed as a savings scheme to ease the burden on our pension system in the decades ahead. Fiddling around the edges as part of a short term budget fix is not only incredibly dangerous – it could easily be seen as counter-productive. The government has also defended its decision by claiming workers will receive the shortfall in superannuation payments via increases in wages. That also remains to be seen,

Fiddling around the edges ... could easily be seen as counterproductive but if it’s so sincere in the belief that this will happen, then every single Award agreement and wage negotiation in Australia needs to reflect this in the years to come. It must also be said that there’s an awful lot wrong with the Australian superannuation industry, including the fact that there’s too greater a reliance upon the existing pension system to support retiring Australians, but taking money out of the system will do little to improve the situation in the long term. twitter@peterkennedy23 pk@bendigoweekly.com.au

The whinger is banging on about the rates

I

WANT to have a rates rant. This is not really a Bendigo story because I live in the Mount Alexander shire, but I am sure we can all share a similar tale. I actually stood for council last election, even got my deposit back, but I based my policy on city-centric spending. Very common in Bendigo too, or so the outlying residents say. I was fed up as a rate payer of the Castlemaine-based council spending all the rates in the ‘maine and leaving other wards unfunded. Well now they have served up a doozy. The town hall in Castlemaine needs a new roof. We are going to pay through extra rates. Nothing strange there you may think, but let me tell you a tale. The beautiful heritage building was considered an ideal location to put some solar panels on, $70,000 worth to be nearly precise. I am not convinced on the benefits of solar, good, but not good enough for the outlay yet. It needs replacement after 10 years and quarterly cleaning. (In this case on the rates). Anyway, that aside when it came to fixing the panels it

was discovered the tin roof and frame was not up to holding and fitting the panels and needed maintenance. So, rather than changing the plan and not fitting the panels it was decided to fit a new roof. Tenders went out and the projected cost is $725,000. This plus the panels at $70,000 brings it in a shade (ha) under $800,000. All up $880,00 has been budgeted and the building closed until the new year. Call me a cynic (you’re a cynic – editor) but there will have to be a major saving in electricity to claw back $880,000.

serving expense for the council is just rubbing our faces in it. Spend the money on the population, not the town hall which is going to be an ongoing expense anyway. Sure the town hall is a heritage site, turn it into a museum, don’t try to drag it into the 21st century when its infrastructure is so obviously failing. No doubt the weight of the new roof will make the walls bulge and there will be a new bill. Never mind, bung another couple of per cent on the rates. twitter: @stevekendall1

Dear Maree, I’ve been in a country town where they solved the problem over over-enthusiastic athletes by putting the winners in the back of a cattle truck and parading them around town in that. We could put the girls in there with the boys as well. Keep them occupied as it were. You could have a portable dunny on the truck alongside the barrels and crates of bourbon. Some meshing around the outside of the stock crate might be useful in case they want to drop kick the empties into the crowd. PS Be careful on Monday morning when you walk into town - there will be vomit traps for the unwary. twitter@DearDotty

Dear Dotty, I am edgy about the grand finals and dreading Bendigo footy celebrations. I have heard that the pubs are boating in bourbon. And B-doubles are on the Calder as we speak, trucking up barrels. What should I do? Anxious, Maree

But here’s the point, the council does not have to pull back the money, they’ve charged the ratepayers. All future expenses with the solar, and the cost of this work will come out of the rates. Thanks council. You sit there making decisions about how to spend the money on your own offices when I don’t even have a road, waste collection, water or sewerage. I live where I do out of choice, and don’t resent work and spending for residents who live in our shire, but this self-

Dear Veronica, Why don’t people just put change in a tin? All this water throwing is just a lot of stuff and nonsense. It’s like people who insist on riding around Australia on a bike to raise money for three legged terriers (have you noticed how many of them are around?). The only thing I would do for money is drink a bottle of sav blanc in a shady piazza on the Almalfi coast. Seriously I really would do it.

Difference welcomed C

ONCERNED about some aspects of the recent debate on the establishment of a mosque in Bendigo, local emerging artist Fiona Jayne gathered together fellow La Trobe College of Visual Arts and Design students to create the exhibition, Welcome? The exhibition examines the concept of difference at both a personal and community level and asks the questions: Who do we invite to share our lives and who do we turn away? How do we keep ourselves safe, yet continue to learn and understand? The artists acknowledge difference is difficult to understand and accept, and decided to explore that difficulty through their work.

“We explore both the domestic and public spheres with the aim of bringing a broad perspective to the community debate about difference, acceptance and tolerance,” Ms Jayne said. The exhibition includes mixed media, drawing, sculpture, installation and collage by artists Fiona Jayne, Zan Griffith, Marilyn Jeanette, Andrew Tate and Ikuko Kimura. The exhibition will be launched at Dudley House on Saturday, September 6 at 2pm and includes a performance by artist Suzannah Griffith. It will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm, Saturday, September 6 until Sunday, September 14 (closed on Monday and Tuesday).

The return of uncorked T

HE city’s famous moveable wine festival, Heritage Uncorked, returns in October. It will take patrons into some of Australia’s most magnificent historic buildings while sampling the best local wines and fresh produce Bendigo has to offer. For those who enjoy a more casual affair, for the first time ever, there is Heritage After Dark. This will be set in the Bendigo Town Hall, a great festive atmosphere will take hold from 5pm until 8pm on Friday, October 10. Think of it as a “miniHeritage Uncorked” for the after work crowd, with wine tastings. Tickets are $35 and bookings are essential.

The event is expanding on Saturday, October 11, with more tickets available and extra historic venues to explore. Throughout the day, enjoy nine venues, six entree sized meals and wine sampling from more than 20 of Bendigo finest wineries. Rest assured, ticket numbers are strictly limited so be sure to get in early. Tickets are $110 and are available from the Bendigo Visitor Centre. There is no Sunday event this year. Bookings are essential for the Friday night and Saturday day events. Call 1800 813 153 or visit online at www. bendigotourism.com For more information about Bendigo Wine visit www. bendigowine.org.au.

HE joy of gathering with friends over food (and a couple of nice drinks) has long been known. As life gets busier and we spend too much time interacting with each other just by social media rather than in real life we can be at risk of losing the opportunity to break bread together. But recently I have experienced two ways in which social media can bring food and friends together. In the past few months I have been an eager participant in a facebook group organised by a friend of a friend where the group is set a different baking challenge each week. Most of the participants are living in London, many of them Australian expats, all with an addiction to the must-watch TV show the Great British Bake Off and a love of baking. The rules are strict, the challenge is set on a Wednesday, you have the next week to complete

told her what I was about to bake, “Oh I remember that from my days of working in the big hotel,” she shuddered. My other food through social media success recently was via facebook – we gathered four couples, six kids (and a dog) to Cook the Book of one of our favourite Melbourne eateries Chin Chin. Chin Chin is modern Thai in Flinders Lane, the place with no bookings and huge queues, reportedly doing up to 1000 covers each night.

the task and post a photo of your success (and odd failure, my lemon tart was a major fail). Being competitive by nature, the group has seen me try recipes I never would have contemplated. Through it I have mastered the skill of bread baking and perfected some traditional recipes such as quiche Lorraine. The biggest challenge – I made an opera cake. So many steps, so many layers. I will never forget the look on the face of a friend when I bumped into her and

With friends having been known to catch the train to and from Melbourne just to dine there, once we had the cookbook we decided to do it ourselves. It was hard cooking, many ingredients and long processes. Made you realise the queuing is worth it. We had four cooks each doing a couple of dishes each. I think we all thought someone else’s dish was best, we were thoroughly sick of our own by the time it got to serving. But I think it has established a new dinner club, Cook the Book where we shall work our way through various cookbooks – and share the experiences on facebook/Instagram/ twitter. See – social media can be good.

Willow Room. Greater Bendigo council Tourism manager Kathryn Mackenzie congratulated all of the restaurants, owners and staff that have been included in the guide. “The Age Good Food Guide is widely recognised as the ultimate guide to dining in Victoria,” she said. “It’s the most respected

food guide in the state and has been guiding foodies in their dining choices for more than 30 years. “To put it simply if you make it into the guide you are ticking a lot of boxes and doing things right.” Ms Mackenzie said the region is fast becoming a foodie haven and this is will attract visitors to the region.

“It’s great for our local economy too as Bendigo’s reputation as a cosmopolitan city continues to soar,” she said. Brewhouse Coffee Roasters, Coffee Business, Merindoc Whistler Café and Re-Public Cured Café were also mentioned in the Country Coffee Trail section.

Willow Room Recipe – Easy chocolate puddings Makes six These simple chocolate puddings are great to do for a dinner party, everyone always loves them. They are very easy, can be done ahead of time and don’t take long to cook. Use a good quality chocolate, it makes all the difference.

Ingredients: 250 grams butter 250 grams dark chocolate Six eggs 1½ cups sugar ½ cup plain flour – sifted Method: 1. In a large bowl melt the butter and chocolate over a pot of simmering water.

2. In a separate bowl gently whisk together the eggs and sugar. 3. Mix together the chocolate mixture with the eggs and sugar and finally fold in the sifted flour. Gently mix until all ingredients are combined. 4. Pour into six individual pudding dishes. Don’t over

fill the dishes, leave about 1cm below the rim. 5. These can now be put in the fridge for up to a week and baked at any time. Bake at 180c for about 15 minutes. The centre should be still soft and gooey. Serve with ice cream and crumbled honeycomb on top.

ARBARION is a heavy metal band from Melbourne and they play The Newmarket on Saturday night. The seven members came together in 2007 and started performing in 2008. Since then, Barbarion’s stage

shows and catchy songs have been steadily winning over Australian audiences. Barbarion always delivers a highly entertaining and theatrical performance. Each member brings to the stage their own barbaric

identity, inspired by barbarians from various times and places – leather, flesh, fur, war paint, helmets, drinking horns – it’s all there and the resulting spectacle is not soon forgotten. The band consists of a larger than life frontman, three hairy

guitarists, bass and drums. The music appeals to metal and non-metal fans alike. It is entertaining and uplifting and draws from traditional champions of metal and hard rock such as Iron Maiden, Manowar, Megadeth, Accept and AC/DC.

Messages from beyond RINGING messages of love and healing, internationally renowned spirit medium Charmaine Wilson has the answers. Touring nationally, Ms Wilson is packing her bags to share messages from loved ones to help those left behind through their suffering. In a one show only event, the Mystical Messages Tour comes to Bendigo on September 16 at the Bendigo RSL. Winner of Seven Network’s The One, Ms Wilson has travelled across Australia for nine years, reaching out to people wanting to connect with deceased relatives. “The reason I come to smaller regional towns is so people can come to experience shows and demonstrations of the show,” she said. “People can come and see if the shows are for them.” Ms Wilson said she helps people make sense of the unacceptable and helps restore their faith, hope and belief.

The published author helps people get on track and out of darkness, knowing their loved ones are safe. Ms Wilson connects people with the “other side” and helps people stay afloat after deaths. “I get so much out of sharing messages with those searching for answers. If I can help one person in a small way, I have done my job,” she said. “Death often just doesn’t make sense, and we can get caught up in focusing on the tragedy, rather than finding the reason to keep living. I think I help bridge that gap… just a bit.” Locals wishing to connect with loved ones or see Ms Wilson’s power, grab your tickets at www. bendigorsl.com.au or on 5442 2950. - Christine McGinn

Some legalese T

HROUGH the past weeks I have focused attention on Sam Ah Dore. As with many families there are always stories which have been passed down, these can take the form of family legends and will remain as such unless they can be proved by means of documentation. Sam Ah Dore died on January 28, 1928, aged 72 years. From his age we can deduce that Sam was born in 1856, he married 18- year-old Eva Mabel Stella Quin at Eaglehawk on April 3, 1901, Sam was then 32. Further from the marriage record we learn that Sam Ah Dore was born at Guangzhou, China and at the time of the nuptials he was listed as a hawker. Dan Jin was Sam Ah Dore’s father’s name, he was recorded as a merchant while his mother was Ah Yen, they were both from Guangzhou. Mark Quin, Sam Ah Dore’s wife’s father was a market gardener, this makes one wonder if this is how the couple met, because of Sam’s involvement in the same line of business? Previously I have mentioned that Sam Ah Dore was also a shopkeeper, having at one time had a

business in Bridge Street (China town) and another in Mundy Street. The Mundy Street property belonged to the United Friendly Societies Dispensary. From Mundy Street Sam conducted at the turn of the 20th century what was variously described as a fancy goods business or just store keeper. Coincidentally the very month that Sam and Eva were married in 1901, his housekeeper of nine years died. The housekeeper’s name was Annie Silkring, she was 37 years of age, passing away suddenly at the Ah Dore house and shop in Mundy Street. The week before Annie Silkring passed away she had been ill, Dr James Boyd had been called to examine her, unfortunately at the time Sam Ah Dore was unable for her to get a ticket, so she could be admitted to hospital. In the past to be admitted to hospital one needed a ticket from a hospital subscriber or from the police. Ada Roma who was a close friend of Annie Silkring had been told by her that “if he brought a young wife she would do away with herself”. Annie

was an alcoholic. Sam did inform Annie that he was marrying Eva Mabel Stella Quin, this news must have been too much for Annie, as she died quite unexpectedly. A post mortem examination was held on the body of Annie Silkring and found the state of her liver was severely damaged by her intemperate drinking habits and she had died of that and heart failure. Just over a year later in mid 1902 Margaret Lennon was being proceeded against by Sam Ah Dore in respect of the sale of a parcel of land. The Land had been purchased through J H Curnow, Ah Dore having paid a £5 deposit, however afterwards Lennon refused to complete the contract. Sam Ah Dore litigated for the sum of £100 damages. Mr Justice Williams made an order in favour of the plaintiff, however the amount was to be determined by Mr H M Murphy the local Deputy Prothonotary. Murphy assessed the amount of damages to be £19/15 shillings, a far cry from the £100 sued for. Sam Ah Dore is believed to be the first to grow the citrus pomelo

fruit or shaddock circa 1895 in Central Victoria, having planted its seeds which developed into a healthy tree. The pomelo was grown extensively in the Guandong province of China. The tree takes at least three years before

it can bear fruit which is much larger than a grapefruit. The pomelo fruit was grown and exhibited at the Sydney Centennial Exhibition in 1888, which means that it must have been planted well before 1885.

One of the youngest

BENDIGO boy who answered the call to arms lost his life 95 years ago this week. On September 2, 1919 Clifton Mills died of diphtheria. Clifton was born in Bendigo in 1903 and is recorded as the sixth youngest Anzac. Veterans Affairs Minister Damian Drum said the event marked a little known, but quietly human event in Bendigo’s part in World War I. “Clifton signed on just before the Armistice with Germany in 1918 and began his training on HMAS Tingira in Sydney. “He is shown in official war records as having the rank of Boy 2nd Class and he died a year later.” More than 3000 boys received training on the Tingira. “Although Clifton never saw active service, he is rightly still listed as an Anzac,” Mr Drum said. Lists of the boy soldiers and boy sailors show that some were as young as 14.

FATHER’S DAY 2014 T

HERE is still time left to get dad the ideal gift for Father’s Day this Sunday. The Weekly has been full of gift ideas during the last few weeks to suit all budgets. PCB Electronic’s catalogue is bursting with amazing deals as is the Shaver Shop catalogue brimming with all the gear to keep dad looking good. So now there is no excuse not to give dad a gift that will be useful regardless of time of year.

Designed to impress dad I

T’S that time of year again, when dad thinks he’s a backyard hero and gets his yard in tip-top shape. Honda knows a thing or two about Father’s Day, so there’s never been a better time for dad to get a Honda. Right now the best-selling Honda UMS425 bent shaft brushcutter leads a range of handheld products on sale until the end of November. Of course, no Father’s Day would be complete without a Honda lawnmower. The HRU19K1 and mulch-and-catch HRU19M1 lawnmowers are ideal for medium lawns and the residential user. And for the first time in Australia, Honda’s collection of lawnmowers includes the new HRR216 residential mower for just $599. With a range of 17 mowers, there’s one for every dad. Visit your local Bendigo Honda dealers, Elliot Bros in Wattle Street and Santon’s of Bendigo in Bridge Street and get dad a present he’ll love.

Too pretty to be a boy, that’s what I am told! As my name suggests, I am quite the smoocher and I love chin and belly rubs. I will require regular grooming, a quick, regular brush to keep me looking smart. I am friendly to everyone, including other cats. This is my second time here, so I am desperate to find my forever home. Come and visit me soon.

Like a lot of greyhounds I am placid and like to lay about. I get to wear a special green collar which means I have been through a greyhound rescue called GAP. Bulldogs chase the elusive flag A LONG-AWAITED premiership would mean more to very few people than North Bendigo co-coach Rob Bennett. Bennett’s legacy and career with the club is one of many examples of the amazing history within this year’s Bulldogs team that, come Saturday, will vie for the club’s first senior flag since 1977. Bennett played all his juniors as well as more than 250 senior games with North Bendigo after his senior debut in 1993, and his father also played with the club. He has also played in both of the Bulldogs’ past two cracks at a flag – in 1998 when the team went down to Colbinabbin and again in 2012 against this week’s opponents, three-time reigning premier Lockington Bamawm United. His co-coach Neville Massina played full-forward and kicked in excess of 100 goals in the ‘Dogs premiership side of 1974, and ruckman Tony Plim’s father, John, coached the ‘77 premiership. North has enjoyed a stellar season, and earned the week off heading into the grand final where it will look to atone for the 94-point loss it suffered in the 2012 decider. “That game has not even been spoken about. It was a different group, and we limped into the grand final that year,” Bennett said this week. “We had a strong training session last Thursday and Saturday after some recovery early in the week, and will have a full side to pick from which is a big plus.” As special as the flag would be to Bennett, he is keeping the excitement well and truly in check before Saturday. Those around North Bendigo, who have been starved of premiership success, have noticed a change around Superior Roofing Oval this season. “Some of the people around the club have said this year how good the feeling around the club has been, and how there has been a lot of unity within the group,” he said. “Not only that but we have two netball sides in grand finals this year and the social functions around the place have been fantastic. “It would be special if we could win on Saturday, but we know there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before then.” LBU suffered injuries to gun forward Jonathan Hay and coach Adrian Dohnt last week, but both are expected to play. Bennett says that his Bulldogs side knows exactly what its opposition is capable of, but he is confident that the Dogs are good enough to get the job done. “We have the utmost respect for LBU, they have been the best side for the last five or six years and we know exactly how good they are,” Bennett said. “It will come down to a four-quarter effort. If we can do that, and commit ourselves to the contest for the full game and stick to our gameplan, we believe we can run out winners.” North Bendigo will also contest the AGrade netball grand final, when it meets Colbinabbin. All grand finals will be played at HyLine Australia Oval in Huntly on Saturday.

Primed for finals By JOEL PETERSON

DESPITE losing twice to Hobart this season, Jonathan Goodman says his Champions IGA Lady Braves side is primed to return to the SEABL finals. The Lady Braves enjoyed the week off last week after their semi-final win, and now face a Hobart side coming off a win over Frankston in the conference preliminary final. Hobart boast scoring power in the likes of the league’s leading scorer Cayla Francis, the Australian Opal starring for the Chargers in between national team duties. Kathleen Scheer has also played a key role for the team, with the two both among the most potent scorers and rebounders of any frontcourt in the league. Bendigo has the height to match the Hobart duo though, with Alex Bunton and the versatile LaSondra Barrett both looming as keys if Bendigo is to

advance to a second consecutive national final under Goodman. “Our last two wins against Kilsyth and Frankston have both been great, and defensively we have taken some real positives out of them,” he said. “I’m a bit like a proud dad seeing how this group has come together, it has been great to see them gel on that end of the floor. “That is what we will need on Saturday again, they are a really strong side that was one win away from finishing in top spot, so they will come in fired up.” In the two losses to Hobart this season the Lady Braves have been below their best on both occasions, the second of those defeats coming at home in the team’s third-last week of the season. “We have not been great either time we have played them, and they are a really strong outfit,” Goodman said. “Cayla’s resume speaks for itself, she is a truly exceptional athlete. They do a great job

HIGH SPOT: The Lady Braves are going in positive. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN around her, they have a really strong roster. “We need to do a much better job defensively than we have the last two times, and make that a whole team effort where everyone comes locked in.” The winning side will meet the winner of Geelong and Brisbane in this weekend’s East conference final for a shot at the 2014 South East Australian Basketball League Women’s crown. After losing to Knox in the

title decider last season, Goodman said his side is fired up to go one better this year. “We have to make it first though,” he said. “I think that fire is still definitely burning inside some of the girls from the loss last season, but we need to win to be any chance of the title this year.” The clash tips off at Bendigo Stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday, with tickets available through the stadium box office or by calling 5440 6200.

Cup legends grace the city

THE Melbourne Cup was in Bendigo this week. The cup is being taken around Australia and New Zealand ahead of the 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival. The cup was at the Bendigo RSL on Monday, along with 1976 Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Bob Skelton, who is the special

guest ambassador on this leg of the Tour. Bendigo Jockey Club chief executive Ian Hart said the town was extremely proud. “We were delighted the cup came to Bendigo,” he said. “Our city has its own rich horse racing history and the visit gives our community a unique

opportunity to view arguably the most famous trophy in Australian sport.” Residents also had the chance to meet 1992 Melbourne Cup-winning thoroughbred Subzero at the Quarry Hill Primary School, Bethlehem Aged Care and Carshalton House Hostel.

VRC acting chief executive Julian Sullivan said the VRC was thrilled to take the cup to Bendigo. “The cup holds historical, cultural and social significance and we were able to share some of the heart-warming stories from the race’s 153-year history,” Mr Sullivan said.

Bendigo the brave By JOEL PETERSON

TOP-CLASS soccer action came to town on Tuesday night, when the A-League’s Melbourne City took on FC Bendigo at Epsom-Huntly Recreation Reserve. Played under lights, the home side was able to hold the visitors well for the first half before eventually falling 4-0. Former Chelsea and Ireland forward Damian Duff showed his class for City, dominating with his creativity on the right wing in a commanding display. The hosts weren’t without their chances but could not capitalise, however goalkeeper Seb Mattei provided several excellent saves to keep Melbourne at bay. FC Bendigo coach Steve Martin said the experience would prove extremely valuable for the young Bendigo group. “It was a great experience, even for us older guys, but for the young guys to be able to take on the likes of Damian Duff and Pat-

rick Kisnorbo was sensational,” he said. “We can certainly take some things out of it. I was impressed with our ability to hold our shape, we conceded a few late goals but none of the boys were overawed by the occasion which was really pleasing.” About 2000 people attended

Martin said. “That it what we are all about, we want to grow the game and our club but make sure the other codes know that there is enough room for all of us as well, so it was great to see some support there.” FC Bendigo now turns its attention to its National premier Leagues clash with Bulleen at Tom

We can certainly take some things out of it. I was impressed with our ability to hold our shape the match at Epsom-Huntly, with Melbourne City officials praising the facilities. Martin said not only was it a pleasing sight on pitch as coach of the side, but the support off the playing field was just as encouraging. “It was great to see so many people there, we had our usual fans but a lot of people and new faces and people from other codes, which is really fantastic,”

Flood Sports Centre on Saturday night. The Lions sit fourth on the table, locked in a battle for promotion at the end of the season, while the home side sits 12th. “I say it every week, that we believe if we stick to our structures and play with discipline for a full 90 minutes, that we can get the results,” Martin said. “That’s the reality of where we are at.”

Pork forks out By JOEL PETERSON

THE Bendigo Spirit this week announced a new naming rights sponsor, with Australian Pork jumping on board with the backto-back WNBL champions. The company was this week announced as the new naming rights sponsor of the Spirit, to be known as the Australian Pork Bendigo Spirit in season 2014-15. Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said the club was delighted to welcome the new major sponsor into the Spirit family. “This is a great opportunity for us to embrace a brand new sponsor, and for Australian Pork to come in as our major naming rights sponsor is fantastic,” Bickley said. “Australian Pork represents producers in regional Australia, and as a regionally based club we very proud to have this producerowned company support the Spirit. “We look forward to a great season with the strong support of Australian Pork.” General manager of marketing for Australian Pork, Peter Haydon, said the sponsorship complemented the work being done by the industry to promote and highlight the nutritional attributes of pork fillets. “Australian Pork is proud to be the new sponsor of the highly successful Bendigo Spirit,” Haydon said.

“Australian pork is a great protein choice for people looking for good health and we believe this partnership will help share that message nationally.

“We look forward to cheering on the Australian Pork Bendigo Spirit as they take to the court to defend their consecutive championships.”

The Spirit trained for the first time as a group on Wednesday night, ahead of its first game of the season at Townsville’s RSL Stadium on October 18.
