CUT ’EM BACK
By CHRISTINE McGINN
THE majority of Greater Bendigo councillors have vowed to slash future rates rises. Locals have suffered through rates rises of six per cent for the past two years, and council is planning to do the same for the next three. In response to the Bendigo Weekly’s sustained anti-poverty campaign,
Councillors aim to slash rate rises
council met behind closed doors this week to discuss rates. A majority of them emerged promising to cut the planned six-percent rises. Whipstick Ward councillor Lisa Ruffell asked for a report into what effect a zero-rates rise next year
would have on services. “It might only be hypothetical, but we need to see the numbers,” she said. “We can look at what services will go, and maybe come to a compromise of, say, three or five per cent.” Lockwood Ward councillor Elise
Chapman supported the zero-rates rise idea. “I have finally got a list of the things that we have to provide and they are now working on the list of what we don’t have to,” she said. “What we provide (in services) costs about $45 million to $49m.

HOME TRUTHS
The Weekly look at the local real estate market
Affordability under pressure THE Housing Industry Association says this month’s release of new research confirms that restricting access to negative gearing for residential property would reduce investment in housing, erode housing affordability and put upward pressure on rents. The HIA also claims abolishing stamp duty on conveyances should be the top priority for housing tax reform, making housing more affordable for both renters and owneroccupiers. “Discounting residential negative gearing in isolation is a retrograde step for tax reform, in terms of both efficiency and equity,” HIA managing director Shane Goodwin said. “New housing is one of the most highly taxed sectors in the economy, and the removal of negative gearing would only make that situation worse and discourage investment. This would in turn reduce housing supply and increase the cost of renting.”
Mr Goodwin said negative gearing promotes private investment in the rental market, thus stimulating economic activity and taking the pressure off social housing and the public purse. “With an ageing workforce and future pressure
New housing is one of the most highly taxed sectors on services, policy settings such as negative gearing that promote wealth creation and selfsufficiency in retirement should be promoted,” Mr Goodwin said. He said it was important to remember negative gearing was not the domain of socalled “wealthy investors”, and that figures
obtained from the ATO demonstrate that 74 per cent of taxpayers receiving rental income have a taxable income of less than $80,000. IN this week’s Real Estate Institute of Victoria column, Bendigo division chairman and Tweed Sutherland First National director Matt Leonard says the approach of summer means many holiday home owners are frantically preparing them for holiday renting. Cleaning, maintenance, gardening – the list of tasks after winter can be daunting, but some owners can find it more difficult when managing their own rentals. “Why pay someone to do what I can do myself?” is their rationale. To read more about the role of a professional property manager and how they can help you best manage your investment or holiday property, turn to page 38 of this week’s Property Guide.

New culture row erupts Leach calls for changes to citizenship address
By ANTHONY RADFORD
GREATER Bendigo councillor Helen Leach has come under fire for an email questioning the cultural traditions of some of the city’s newest citizens. After attending a citizenship ceremony earlier this month, Cr Leach sent an email to the eight other councillors. “At the citizenship ceremony today I noticed that the address encourages new citizens to hold onto their cultural practices or something similar,” she wrote. “I would suggest we leave that out of the speech because some cultures have practices that are inconsistent with our laws and val-
ues eg polygamy and female genital mutilation and child brides and perhaps other unpleasant practices. “Can I have a response please? Helen.” Cr Leach was referring to a Department of Immigration script in the ceremony which reads:” No applicant for Australian citizenship is expected to renounce cultural identity, customs or traditions, which are part of his or her heritage”. Cr Mark Weragoda took offence at Cr Leach’s email. “I think it is quite disgusting,” he said.
“We need to encourage multiculturalism and encourage people to share their cultures “This is just a bit of bullshit re-
“I was also going to say ‘eating the family pet’ but I thought I would leave that out,” she said. “Child brides is an issue. It is going on in Australia and is a cultural custom. “It might not just be one culture, it could be other cultures.” Cr Leach sad the ceremonial script should include a phrase clarifying cultural traditions should not break the law. She defended her stance on multicultural issues. “I embrace different types of food and costumes,” she said. “I am getting involved with the Karen community and recently attended a festival they hosted at Holy Rosary (primary school).”
with our laws,” he said. “Everyone is aware of that. Helen has probably taken this a little bit further.
Some cultures have practices that are inconsistent with our laws ally. It is a joke.” Cr James Williams said Cr Leach had overstepped the mark. “With cultural beliefs, we all know new citizens have to fit in
“It is important to understand others’ cultures and beliefs. Education is the key to it. Cr Leach defended the email to the Bendigo Weekly.

DCK Real Estate and Colliers International have won the tender to put the former Bendigo Mining Exchange on the market. Greater Bendigo council took on a stewardship role, responsible for repairs including rebuilding all chimneys, to maintain the iconic local building. A Heritage Victoria permit allowed the refurbishment and redevelopment of the building.
Council Planning and Development acting director Ross Douglas said following the works, the BME was “investment ready”. “The city has every confidence DCK and Colliers International will present the BME in the best possible light and develop a strong marketing campaign that will attract interest from a number of potential developers and investors,” Mr Douglas
said. “By tendering for a company to manage the marketing of the BME, it will improve the city’s options to negotiate and choose a successful candidate to take on this unique opportunity. “Williams Boag Architects have developed architectural drawings of how the BME could look when it’s fully renovated and we look forward to a potential purchaser re-
taining the integrity of this important heritage building and adding to our vibrant city streetscape.” DCK Real Estate and Colliers International also listed the former Advertiser building for sale, set to become the city’s first five star hotel. Colliers International senior executive Travis Hurst said they were thrilled to be selling another Bendigo icon.
“We expect there will be great interest in the BME and many will want the opportunity to develop this ideally-placed heritage asset,” he said. The Beehive is the oldest known purpose-built stock exchange in Australia and the city purchased the building in 1999. Council will choose an applicant to purchase and redevelop the BME following expressions of interest.
A 38-year-old New South Wales man has been charged after allegedly making deaths threats to Greater Bendigo councillor Mark Weragoda. The Bowraville man was charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend, after allegedly sending emails to the Eppalock Ward councillor earlier this year at the height of the Bendigo mosque debate. Bendigo Police say they tracked the emails to the man’s email account and collaborated with NSW Police to arrest him. The man is expected to appear at a NSW court on November 12. Cr Weragoda said he did not want to comment as the matter was before the courts.

Lend Lease under fire Workers fire up over claims of broken promises
By CHRISTINE McGINN
WORKERS are up in arms saying Coliban Water’s contractor Lend Lease has broken contractual promises. Coliban vehicles will resemble ambulances for the time being, with unionised slogans being used to assist the cause. Australian Services Union members will also wear clothing protesting the changes to their work conditions and on-call workers will refuse to answer calls before 1pm. ASU organiser Emma
Bagg said Lend Lease had made empty and broken promises. “We have been in negotiations since December,” she said. “The main issue when Lend Lease took over, they said workers would not be worse off. “We have constantly seen a backflip on Lend Lease over negotiations.” Ms Bagg said workers’ compassionate and carers leave had been reduced from
15 days to 10 days. “Members want to have similar conditions to before they took over. That’s what
be paid an on-call rate. They backflipped on that. At every turn they are changing their minds.
When Lend Lease took over, they said workers would not be worse off they said they would do and we want them to honour that,” she said. “Lend Lease put forward an offer, in writing, to anyone given a call-out, they would

on what is on the table. “The workers want to minimise the effect on the local community, they live in the community. Lend Lease already have Melbourne contractors coming in as they assumed they would have taken action already. “They wanted a five per cent pay increase and have significantly reduced to four per cent (across three years) and are willing to negotiate. “At the end of the day, they are local. keep workers local and provide a good service and don’t want to significantly impact the community.” A Lend Lease spokesperson said they were working towards a resolution. “Lend Lease is known for and committed to maintaining good relationships with its employees and contractors,” she said. “We believe these matters can be resolved quickly and fairly. “This process will have no impact on operations or impact the service to Coliban Water’s customers.”
Grants boost IT in preschools BENDIGO preschools can now upgrade their facilities and IT systems thanks to more than $89,000 in grants from the State Government. Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Wendy Lovell and Liberal Party Bendigo East candidate Greg Bickley joined families at Goodstart Early Learning on McIvor Road yesterday to announce the 22 services receiving the grants. Mr Bickley said the upgrades were crucial to ensuring centres in the local community could deliver FARE DEAL: John Mulder, Leanne Oberin, Kaye Graves, Michael Langdon, Health Parliamentary Secretary Georgie Crozier, Greg Bickley, James Mawson and Barry Lyons promoting a new Healthy Together Bendigo Community Kitchen project at the Long Gully Recreation Reserve.

New program offers healthy choice BENDIGO residents will soon be able to learn how to plan and cook healthy meals, after a community kitchen program was introduced this week. Community members will be given the opportunity to learn about the importance of healthy eating, with the project starting in November, and running until June 2015. The project, Healthy Together Bendigo, is funded by the State Government,
and aims to improve the health of the community. Health Parliamentary Secretary Georgie Crozier, said this was a great initiative, and supported the positive work already done. She said last year, when Jamie’s Ministry of Food mobile kitchen came to Bendigo, it taught people basic cooking skills and the importance of eating fresh food. “Now this cooking

project will continue the strong healthy-eating message,” she said. People aged 16 years and over will be able to take part in the project. They will also be linked to community gardens and other support programs. It is hoped this will allow them to continue to put their new skills to use. Greater Bendigo council chief executive officer Craig Niemann said such a project would help to in-
crease healthy eating rates locally, and reverse a negative trend of fast food consumption. He said council’s recent Food Security Report highlighted many challenges people face when accessing healthy food. the world-class learning programs. “These 22 children’s centres are among 643 Victorian preschools and children’s centres enabled by the Napthine Government to upgrade their facilities and IT systems through $2.9 million in grants,” Mr Bickley said. Ms Lovell said since December 2010, the government had contributed $120 million to building and upgrading facilities across the state. She said this had generated hundreds of jobs in building, construction and related industries.
BENDIGO’S Dragon City Roller Derby Dolls coach Kimberley Sprake has been named as a finalist in the prestigious Victorian Government Community Sport and Recreation Awards. Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum and Liberal Party Bendigo East candidate Greg Bickley announced Ms Sprake as a finalist in the Community Coach of the Year category. Mr Bickley said the awards provide a snap-
shot of the dedicated individuals, teams, clubs and organisations around the state that embody the true spirit of community sport and recreation. “I warmly congratulate Ms Sprake and personally thank her for her significant contribution to community sport and recreation,” he said. Winners in each of eight categories will be announced at an awards night to be held at the MCG on October 1.

Firies add heat over new station By CHRISTINE MCGINN
FIREFIGHTERS are again calling on the Country Fire Authority to build a new fire station, to stop putting local lives at risk. According to firies, the current Hargreaves Street facility is too small and too old to meet current demand. But the CFA has made some progress, since the Bendigo Weekly revealed the conditions in March. A new covered area has been built to shelter the two of
It’s only a temporary fix to a bigger problem five trucks previously unable to fit inside the station. The kitchen facilities have been improved with a new fridge. An extra shower, increasing to three, is on its way but there is still no room to properly store their personal gear. United Firefighters Union representative Travis Harris said the CFA was making minor improvements to “make it more comfortable until we can have a new station”. “They are certainly only doing it because they have to do it, not because they want to. It’s only a temporary fix to a bigger problem. It hasn’t made the problem go away, it may ease the problem slightly but we still don’t fit in the sta-
tion and we still don’t have room for our equipment,” the firefighter of eight years said. “The equipment is still not on the trucks it needs to be on. So it’s little steps in the right direction but it is still a long way to the end. “Bendigo could certainly do with a new fire station that could fit all the equipment in properly and another truck to put all our rescue equipment on. “It’s like we have been forgotten about.” Bendigo’s CFA station has a rope and confined space rescue kit, but still, five months later, has no specialised truck to put it on. “We have had a slight win, we are starting to train a few people, not enough, to provide that service 100 per cent,” he said. Loading the specialised equipment onto a truck could take up to 20 minutes, continuing to delay call outs. Mr Harris said it was a “half win” as only one vehicle was left with three types of hose couplings, with the inclusion of each before a callout. He said there was a significant lack of people to adequately service and protect the local community. “We could definitely do with more personnel at Bendigo and the sad situation hasn’t changed. We have five trucks at Bendigo and only have seven people, the maths just doesn’t work out for the amount of people we should have to provide a fully efficient service,” he said. A CFA spokesperson said the station was currently meeting its career and volunteer staff members’ needs. “The fire station has recently undergone renovations.

NEWS: The story from March. There are also some minor works under way to improve toilet and shower facilities. In past, the dormitory area of the fire station has also been upgraded,” she said. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan would not promise funding to upgrade the Bendigo CFA station. “Our firefighters haven’t been valued by their government and have had a tough time getting their issues raised,” she said. “There is a long way to go to the coming state election. We’ve had discussions about the upgrades to the station so we are aware of the issue.” But Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley said the government was investing in CFA station upgrades. “We are getting on and delivering results for the Bendigo region. We put $250,000 for the Bendigo CFA station to a truck port and shower amenities,” he said. “I’ll continue to support emergency services and work with the various bodies in their causes.”
GREEN DREAM: Bendigo West candidate John Brownstein. Photo: BILL CONROY THERE is a new Bendigo West Greens candidate in town, John Brownstein. Campaigning for a fast and reliable train system, Mr Brownstein is putting public transport on his priority list. “We are saying we will take the 2011 V/Line report, we will cost it, fund it and implement it so we can make sure our regional rail line from Bendigo to Melbourne remains fast and efficient,” he said. “My constituents are complaining it takes an extra 30 minutes to Melbourne and the service back to Bendigo. There is commuter traffic both ways. If we want Bendigo to grow and be prosper-
ous, we have to maintain that edge. “It needs constant investment to keep the capacity on that line.” Mr Brownstein said the report found in three years, Bendigo trains would need to run every 15 minutes during peak hours to meet demand. “We are competing with metro trains on the same line. There are engineering solutions to this that V/Line have looked at but these things have been shelved,” the former councillor and mayor said. “It is more efficient to have people travelling by rail and there is a stronger demand for it. There are
environmental, social and economic reasons for developing this. “We have a coherent public transport plan and we haven’t seen this from either of the major parties. “It is vital for the continued development of our regional communities that fast and efficient rail services are planned for and provided to cope with projected increases in demand.” But Mr Brownstein said public education was his top priority with a strong push for social and economic development. “I’ve got a good head for policy detail. I know I can do the job,” he said.

Rates varied
MORE than half of Bendigo’s households received rates rises below the average this year. The Bendigo Weekly can reveal almost 56 per cent of Greater Bendigo’s 45,741 houses received rates rises of less than six per cent. More than 20 per cent of the city’s residents received a rates decrease this financial year. On the flip side, more than 15 per cent of households received rates increases of 15 per cent or more. Greater Bendigo council Organisational Support director Marg Allan said the statistics
highlighted the true picture of the rates rises. “It shows from a residential ratepayer’s perspective that more than half are paying less than the average six per cent rates increase proposed by council,” she said. “It shows the philosophy of using Capital Improved Value is the appropriate method in which to charge a rate.” The statistics also reveal a high percentage of dramatic increases in vacant land rates. is going up,” she said. “Some new subdivisions, in places like Kangaroo Flat, are seeing increases in value of about 25 per cent over the two-year revaluation cycles.” - Anthony Radford
“We don’t have to provide unessential services. We need to be more stringent and more fiscal. “The residents have had enough and rightly so. Residents have banded together in uproar.” Eppalock Ward councillor Helen Leach said she favoured a three-percent rise next year. “We need to take into account council’s income and what the expenditure might be,” she said. “It will be difficult to determine over the next 10 years but we need to project what it could be. “We can’t put too many things on the list. Trying to keep rates at or near inflation is a better way to think about it.” Whipstick Ward councillor Peter Cox restated his election-campaign policy of keeping rates increases capped at four per cent. “I do not want more than a four per cent rate rise and I want a one per cent reduction in capital (works) and one per cent in operating costs,” he said. “What we are seeing in the last couple of weeks, we have got to take in the potential for people to pay their rates. “About 25 per cent of the community are on
income support... 10 per cent find it difficult to put food on the table.” Fellow Whipstick Ward councillor James Williams said he wanted a rates reduction of 0.5 to one per cent for the coming years. “I am supportive of a rate reduction, even if we cut it half a per cent and half a per cent the next year,” he said. “But not a large rates reduction that might im-
Questions need to be asked pact the long-term viability of this council. “That gives us a two per cent margin over our growth, and that has to account for inflation, staff rises in wages, all things that we need to work out and reduce. “I am not opposed to a one per cent rates reduction, provided I know that if we have to put it up to seven per cent to counter that in the future. “It’s that compounding effect over time that really makes a difference.
Cr Williams’ reductions would inevitably occur through the implementation of the Independent Review “We need to maintain services, our improvements, our capital works,” he said. “We might need to restructure our capital works and where those priorities sit and we quite often talk about that. “I am cautious of making decisions with the heart and not the head.” Cr Williams said cutting rates by three per cent would hold this, and future councils, to ransom. Eppalock Ward councillor Mark Weragoda said he wanted a reduction, provided it did not negatively impact the council’s financial situation. “I would like to see a rates reduction but I’d like to ask Organisation Support director Marg Allan what we might sit on (financially) if we do review the rates, and keep them at five per cent,” he said. “Questions need to be asked and answered. “The Independent Review recommendation says we have to review rates so that could be an implementation of the review.”

YMCA a winner from books BENDIGO Regional YMCA has new solar panels thanks to the sale of pre-loved books. The Y Service Club of Bendigo donated $10,000 to the YMCA to pay for a 4.5kW solar system, with the money raised through their biannual book fairs. Book fair co-ordinator Colin Lambie said the solar panels would provide ongoing savings to the organisation. “There are a lot of people in the community who believe in renewable energy,” Mr Lambie said. “The solar system will reduce the cost of electricity by about $1500 per year.”

A FORMER V/Line regional manager has serious safety concerns about an unfenced section of Bendigo’s train line. Local Peter McDonnell said the 280 metres of unfenced train line was unsafe for the community especially due to its proximity to Lake Weeroona. “Coupled with the activity, the risk may only be low to medium but the consequences are catastrophic as far as somebody wandering onto the track,” the former senior station master said. “The consequences actually elevate risk when you do a risk-assessment.” Calling for fencing the track between Napier Street and Weeroona Avenue and a physical barrier at the boom gates on Napier Street, Mr McDonnell said the area had been neglected and had just “crept up”. “It has grown over the time and the place has got busier as there is a lot of money being spent on the lake in recent years,” he said. “If you have a look along many of the stations on the Bendigo line to Melbourne, they have a boom gate. When the boom comes down, the gate locks. “The drivers are saying
when they come around the corner, they can’t see and it doesn’t allow them to brake. It is on a real curve and the drivers don’t get a real view at all.” Drivers, who were unable to speak out publicly, and locals have also voiced their concerns about the area. “It’s the busiest recreational space the city has,” Mr McDonnell said. V/Line spokesperson Ebony Jordan said it was not practical to fence the entire rail network. “This section of track, including the two pedestrian crossings have just been reviewed by V/Line staff and are not deemed a high risk,” she said. “There are seven services a day stopping at Eaglehawk and an additional two daily services have just been announced. “V/Line looks after 3420 kilometres of track and while our crews are constantly doing upgrades and maintenance. “We will continue to monitor the section of track and crossings, and will listen to any feedback from our drivers and the community.” Greater Bendigo council engineer and Public Space manager Brett Martini said Lake Weeroona was a highly

WE’VE had a number of dares for Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons in the lead up to the Glass Slipper Ball. Some we can’t publish, others are too dangerous, and some he can surely handle in the name of charity. The first dare is right up his alley, to host the Community Foundation of Central Victoria’s stakeholders meet-
ing where grants will be given out to the community. The second is to fill the role of concierge at Haven; Home, Safe offices, meeting, greeting and making coffee for clients. The most daring of all so far is to serve pizza at fundraising lunch at the Bendigo Bank for dance competitors Greg and Nicole Peel.
Surely, there are bigger and bolder dares out there, well worth the asking price of a table for 10 worth $1500 at the spectacular Glass Slipper Ball to be held in the My Jet Hangar on Saturday, October 4. So we’re going to leave this competition open for one more dare. To book, go to www.glassslipperball.com.au

A 32- year-old Melbourne man was caught driving almost four times over the legal alcohol limit on Sunday. The Bendigo Highway Patrol pulled over the vehicle on the Calder Highway at Lockwood. The man recorded a 0.191 alcohol blood reading after returning to the police station. The man’s licence was immediately suspended and will attend court at a later date. Sergeant Della Nihill said it was the worst reading in Greater Bendigo she had heard over the weekend. “This is extremely high. The message is clear, do not drink and drive,” she said. “Especially during the football festivals, organise alternative arrangements. There are plenty of taxis or ask a family member. “The road toll is already higher than last year. We don’t want to add to it.” TWO men, who refused to stop fighting, were sprayed with capsicum spray on Saturday night. Three men were throwing punches in the Tony’s On High restaurant carpark about 6pm. Police asked the men, twice, to stop fighting and one backed off, while the other two continued. Police sprayed the men with capsicum spray to stop the behaviour. A Huntly man, in his 30s, was taken to the police station and was released. The man was issued two penalty notices for being drunk in a public place and offensive behaviour. Ambulance officers treated the other man at the scene. TRADIES are warned to lock up their tools following a spate of thefts this month. Powertools and garden equipment are being targeted, even trailers stolen from the back of cars.
Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Colin Grenfell said it was important to reduce the risk of theft by locking up valuables and storing them in secured locations, where possible. “Thefts have not been occurring in a particular area but all over. This includes working sites, building sites, just as much at tradies private homes or in their driveways,” he said. Thefts are predominately occurring overnight and anyone with information should contact Bendigo police on 5448 1300. OFFENDERS with outstanding warrants are the focus of a newly-formed Bendigo police operation team. The four-officer unit, has been finalising old and new, outstanding warrants and ensuring offenders attend the Magistrate’s Court. Police are following up a wide range of offences in a bid to serve justice. People with outstanding warrants, or who unsure if they have, are asked to speak with police. “We are making a concerted effort to alleviate as many warrants as possible,” Sergeant Tony Kekich said. “We want to ensure people with warrants attend court and have their cases heard. “People who come to us could have their cases re-bailed to appear at court and we can assist them. “The main reason is to ensure people are apprehended and justice is sought. It’s also to keep the community safe.” The operation will run for another three weeks, with full confidence it will be reinstated again after this initial operation. “We will turn up houses, their work locations or if it is known they regularly frequent a sporting event to meet them,” Sgt Kekich said. “This is a step forward in community safety and we will make sure they are made accountable. We make no apologies.”

Penalty notice issued POLICE refused to comment on whether or not a drunk man made terrorist-related comments in Bendigo on Sunday morning. Police issued a 23-year-old Shepparton man with a penalty notice for being drunk in a public place about 2am. A Victoria Police spokesperson did not deny earlier information the man was “mouthing off” about terrorism. Police released him after normal processing.

POLICE rode trail bikes to catch drivers on their mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts in the CBD last week. The four fluoro orange bikes arrived from Melbourne for two weeks. A BALL was a night to remember for students of the Bendigo Special Development School. Nine students took part in their school’s second biannual debutante ball, where the theme was a little ray of sunshine. Bendigo Special Development School’s Amanda Bourdon said the event was a success. “It was a good night for students to celebrate with family and friends,” she said. Ms Bourdon said the students, aged 17 and 18, had been practicing their two dances for 10 weeks and had great fun doing so. “The students had been working hard to learn their two dances,” she said. Held for the second time, the debutante ball was enjoyed by all who attended. “It was an absolutely beautiful night,” Ms Bourdon said. “The students did a wonderful job.”

On their bike
By MARTIN BANFIELD
HAVE you ever ridden a bike and not felt better for it? Okay, there might be some exceptions but generally if you experience a changing landscape at a moderate pace without impact, fresh air and get the blood flowing, you will feel better for it. One way to help encourage people towards feeling better is recreational cycling or commuting by having access to a community bike share scheme. One of the first was in Amsterdam 50 years ago where they experienced challenges. No surprise the major challenge was the non return of bikes that were later found and retrieved from nearby canals. With the introduction of technology in the past decade this has allowed for successful management and viability of bike sharing schemes. The main motivation for major city commuters is to alleviate traffic congestion. Most bike share schemes

WHEELIE GOOD: Bikes for hire in Melbourne. are free in the first hour then moderate charges apply up to a full-day hire, with payments via electronic means, plastic card or annual membership. This concept is now in most capital cities in Australia. Bendigo has a rich cycling history, across a range of disciplines boasting national champions, Olympians and competitors on the international stage. The local club-racing scene is well supported and many opt for cycling as a form of fitness and to maintain a social network. We even have the locally developed manky (map that folds like a hanky) providing ideal road cycling routes and some great mountain bike trails. Without infrastructure barriers there is no reason why Bendigo couldn’t adopt a bike share scheme available to the whole community. Strategically, bike sta-
tions could be placed around city locations complimentary to local offerings such as wineries, cafes, parks and tourist landmarks. Ultimately this will be determined from the level of interest from local stakeholders, whether privately owned or partnered by a collective, here is an opportunity in the waiting. In the meantime if it’s been a while since you have ridden a bike, then find one. It might bring back some memories of the Dragster or chopper with a three-speed T Bar gear shift, dynamo powered lights, loading up the paper bag or nurturing home the bread and milk on the pack rack. They all came with a good education. Here’s another lesson – don’t let a sibling tie your shoe laces around the pedals to recreate a leather foot strap. It ends the same as getting your flare jeans caught in the bike chain.

THIS year’s Fashion for the Field Luncheon aims to raise much-needed funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Cancer In Kids Auxilliary. Run mostly by volunteers, CIKA formed in 1980 from the parents of three children who passed away due to cancerous tumours. CIKA president Sandra Lehrer said all funds raised at the luncheon would go towards supporting valuable research. “This is the second year we have held such an event in Bendigo and we are hopeful that it will continue to build on last year’s successful luncheon,” Ms Lehrer said. More than 100 guests are expected to attend the luncheon, and organisers hope to raise in excess of last year’s $1500 effort. CIKA spokesperson Ruth Edel-

for doctors to remove the tumour and store it in the tumour bank,” Ms Edelsten said. “This research will help save the lives of many children.” There will be a fashion parade on the day showcasing hats from Bendigo Hat Shop, jewellery from Colibra Jewellers and clothing from Merinda in Bath Lane. The luncheon will takes place next Tuesday, September 30. Guests are asked to arrive at the Bendigo Stadium at 10.30am for an 11am start.

CHILDREN of all ages were delighted this week after a new art installation was launched at the Rosalind Park Conservatory. Strange Garden has been created by Eliza-Jane Gilchrist, and features plant-like structures made from cardboard. It also gives young people the opportunity to draw and add their own patterns to the work when they visit. “A magical world has been created for families to contribute to, peer into, explore and enjoy,” the Castlemaine artist, who has been developing the project since 2010, said. Strange Garden will open daily from 11am to 3pm until October 5. – Sam Kane

Take notice of Labor’s rate cap AN excessively priced $30,000 seat paid for by Bendigo councillors using ratepayers’ money is the last straw for me as a long-suffering ratepayer. Councillors should be forced to sit on the seat, sit up and pay attention, because Labor’s policy at the upcoming state election is to cap rises to CPI (now 2.5 per cent) per year. Bendigo ratepayers have been told their rates will rise six per cent every year for years to come. The Bendigo public can’t afford out-ofcontrol council spending and I, for one, want Labor’s policy. If council wants to raise rates over 2.5 per cent then they will have to justify it to a tribunal. If councils want to spend their rates on wasteful unwanted seats, then ratepayers will be protected from them. Premier Denis Napthine’s support for councils raising rates without restriction shows he has no idea how rates rises are out of control and how many people are struggling to pay them. Ian Seymour, Bendigo
Figures challenged I AM writing to challenge the validity of the figures used in your front page article on September 12 claiming that rates in Greater Bendigo have almost doubled in a decade. According to our calculations, rates have risen by 66 per cent on the median valuation residential property since 2005-06. This is not an insignificant amount, but it is far from an almost doubling of rates as reported in the Bendigo Weekly. Rates are calculated according to the Capital Improved Value (CIV) of individual properties and not the median house sales price as used by the Bendigo Weekly. Ten years ago, the median residential property in Greater Bendigo was valued at $180,000 (CIV) and the rates payable were $699.32. In 2014-15, the median residential property was valued at $296,000 (a 64.4 per cent increase over the 2005-06 median CIV of $180,000) and the rates payable were $1162.40 – an increase of $463.08 or 66.21 per cent. In a growing municipality like ours, the number of rateable assessments is increasing, along with
the requirement for services. During the last decade, the number of rateable assessments increased from 46,600 assessments in 05-06 to 55,111 in 2014-15, an increase of 8511 assessments or 18.26 per cent. Additional assessments share the rate burden. Without additional rateable assessments, the rate burden would be higher on existing properties. The rates collected by the council are used to fund a range of services and infrastructure projects that benefit all residents. For example, in the past decade the city has used rates to help: • Build more than 100 kilometres of new road, 150km of new kerb and channel, 120km of new footpaths, 150km of new drainage and reseal more than 350km of road • Administer more than 98,000 vaccines • Respond to more than 4400 planning enquiries and issue over 1000 planning permits • Plant more than 340,000 trees, shrubs and grasses • Collect more than 190,000 tonnes of garbage from residential properties • Maintain more than 800 public buildings and structures, 310 passive recreation reserves, over 70 sports reserves, 20 heritage and formal gardens and 11 swimming pools The Greater Bendigo council understands affordability is an issue for many and we work hard to keep any rate rises to a minimum (people having difficulty paying their rates are encouraged to contact council on 5434 6000 to set up a suitable payment option). However, costs are rising, Greater Bendigo’s population is growing and demand for services is increasing. In addition, we have to maintain existing assets to a high standard to ensure they are available for future generations. In regards to the Fire Services Levy, this is a charge collected by council on behalf of the State Government and should not be included in any rate comparisons. Marg Allan, City of Greater Bendigo

Liberal Party candidate Bendigo East LAST week it was announced Weeroona College will receive a $4000 grant to tackle bullying as part of the Napthine Government’s Bully Stoppers campaign. This funding is for schools to run anti-bullying programs by students, for students. When this announcement was made, I must admit it hit me quite hard. I found myself reliving my early years at Weeroona College (then known as White Hills Tech). It was a rough school, and

years seven and eight were very tough years for me, being bullied on a regular basis. Being bullied, bashed and threatened now seems a lifetime ago. Back then there was no antibullying message. There were no anti-bullying programs. I look back with sadness as I recall those turbulent years. Now as a parent, as any parent would feel, I want to do all I can to protect my children. I do not want to see my kids go through what I went through. But it is happening every day. And of greatest concern is that cyber bullying goes on into the night. Bullying is an issue for everyone in a school community. It can happen at anytime, anywhere, to
the promise has been reignited. Shame that the promise for warning lights at Marong Primary School was not delivered as promised by the Liberals in their first term. Shame that, just prior to another election, they recycle this promise. The people of Marong deserve

any child. And the consequences can be devastating. Young Victorians need to understand that bullying and cyber bullying isn’t acceptable and that each individual can make a difference. Bullying has been shown to stop within 10 seconds when bystanders take positive action. While it may seem to be a small gesture, standing up for someone being bullied can make a huge difference. The Bully Stoppers – Make a Stand, Lend a Hand message is one that aims to educate about the prevention of bullying, and also help respond to bullying behavior if it does take place. This is welcome funding indeed.

Support the sport the screams of boys and girls having fun dressed mostly in white can be heard from just about every oval in Bendigo. Come Saturday afternoon, the men take the field and a lot of the same children stand and watch in awe. Bendigo is facing an embarrassment of riches when it comes to junior cricket. It is getting harder and harder for clubs to find ovals to play on. This is a good thing and something councils need to consider. October will also herald the start of the Bendigo Spirit’s title defence, defence. It is extraordinary at the highest level to win back-to-back premierships, so as far as Bendigo is concerned, we are certainly seeing sporting history. The Spirit is the city’s most successful sporting club, and it wants to stay that way. With the loss of the Bendigo Gold this year, elite sport in the city is obviously under the pump. It is vital for Bendigo’s future that both The Spirit and FC Bendigo thrive.
Having a clear pathway from juniors to elite sport is a key component in keeping young people in towns. The next step in this battle is a Premier Cricket team for Bendigo. This is a great idea, and hopefully it can happen. Whether it be cricket, basketball or soccer, local and state governments, and the clubs themselves, cannot be relied upon in isolation for success. It is up to us, the fan, to throw our support behind them. It is not just enough to attend the games and cheer from the sidelines. For these clubs to arrive/survive/thrive we need to support them financially. In the case of FC Bendigo and The Spirit, the quality of team and players is worth spending the money on. To be able to see such quality sport without leaving town is a very inexpensive luxury. If we want to continue doing it for a long time, do yourself, and your city, a favour. Buy a membership.

THIS week I was fortunate to celebrate a significant birthday, and to share the day with so many wonderful people who are part of my life. As a now 50 year old, there comes a time when one has to accept a greater responsibility for your own health, not just for yourself, but for those who play an important role in your life, or those who depend upon you to also support them in life. For me, that time is now. I have been lucky enough to enjoy good health and a reasonable degree of fitness for most of my life, but now that I’ve clocked up a half century upon this planet, it’s time to take my health a lot more seriously, and to stop taking things for granted. Many of my mates have also turned 50 this past year or so, and it’s no surprise that conversations over a coffee or a beer these days can sometimes turn to health matters,

AS one season ends, another begins. No, it’s not the sudden arrival of mild nights and sunny days, it’s about balls. With the seemingly very long football season done and dusted, Bendigo’s sporting thoughts turn away from clubs in court, to the basketball court. They turn from the soccer pitch to the cricket pitch. Cricketers would have already begun their preseasons weeks ago, and will now be suffering from stiff shoulders and the odd bruise on the inner thigh. October will see the beginning of cricket competitions across the region. The sport gets a bad wrap from local government administrators, with a lot of money needed to keep grounds up to scratch for a sport hardly anyone goes to watch. They may have a point, but that is changing. Local cricket associations have performed brilliantly in recent years to increase the numbers of juniors playing the sport. On any given Friday night and Saturday morning over summer,

dear dotty... Dear Dotty Last week I asked for your help because I was lonely and you suggested I buy a book called How to Make Friends Even When You Are Boring. Calling a mate crusty or pie face may not be ideal
H
ELEN in the bakery out front of the Weekly dropped a custard pie this week. Now that may not seem like big news but it did make a bit of a mess. I know it’s not worthy of a live blog or anything, but it did lead me to think of some of the unkind names people use. “He had a face like a dropped pie” was the first, as I had just seen one. But there are others like “she had a face like a robber’s dog” or my favourite “a face like a bag of spanners”. This had another knock on and you can see it printed at right, as Dotty has tackled the names people are called and whether it is appropriate or not. The striking bit about all of this is the inventiveness people have when it comes to name calling. Everyone already has a name, but there is an overwhelming urge to rename someone. I was named Stephen, but at some point I decided on Steve, but that has not stopped a multitude of people giving
me a vast array of names in my life. Some I will keep to myself, but a few may grace the page later on. I call the long-suffering Mrs Kendall Sex Bomb. She certainly has a sex, and is pretty explosive, so I think it’s pretty apt. Mrs K calls me Bull, probably because of my masculine broad shoulders, I can’t think of another reason, but recently she has taken to calling me Old Man. Now, as I am half-way through 53 I don’t feel on the old slope, but I must admit as various aches and pains curtail
some of my activities I can see her point. Why on earth two of my fingers hurt and won’t fully flex is beyond me, and as for the gentle but constant ache in my shoulder I have no idea. Maybe Mrs K is more observant than I thought. We had six lambs out of our pet sheep this year, well eight but one was dead and the fox got another, and I have made the mistake of naming some of them. Two males are heading off as lawnmowers but one male and three ewes are staying. So added to the flock are Coco, Luther, Lizzy and Lamb.
There is now no way they will be on anyone’s table. They have names for goodness sake, so this is a pretty important point. Mind you, I know people who have called their steers Freezer and Roast, but it’s not the way I intend to work. There are very few of the names I have been called that actually amuse me or entertain, mostly they are a joy for the name caller, so bear that in mind when you next think up a witty moniker for a mate... of course if it’s an enemy go for your life. Dear Dotty, Last week I went to a party all prepared. I was freshly showered, wore my new T shirt from Target, brought along a bottle of wine and chocolates and my mouth organ for when things got gay and hearty later on. When I arrived at the destination I realised there was nobody around. At first I thought they were hiding to give me a surprise even though it wasn’t my birthday. After knocking for some time my host came to the door looking disgruntled. He told me I had the right hour I was just a week too early. I felt very needy. What would you have done? James

HERE’S a thing doing the rounds of facebook at the moment where people are nominated not to pour ice over their head, but rather to nominate the 10 books that have influenced them the most. Of course, my mind turned to food and I started thinking about the cookbooks that influenced me the most.
•
1. The PMWU Cookbook – Every family has some version of this cookbook, a book published and republished that has all the basics. The book you turn to time and time again. This is my lemon slice recipe. This is my fallback
• 2. Stephanie Alexander’s The Cook’s Companion.
Serves four as a side dish This is a Sicilian dish from the south of Italy. It’s often described as a sweet and sour eggplant stew or relish. This is a great dish to serve as part of an antipasto with crusty bread or with grilled meats and fish. It’s commonly served with hard boiled eggs also.
I read every page when this orange bible came out. That’s a lot of pages. The beautiful way it is written, the basics and the extravagant recipes. These days I most often use it to remind me of cooking times for roasts, but I think it changed the way I thought about food and cooking.
• 3. Bill Granger’s early work. You will observe that I think of my cookbooks in the same way music aficionado’s think about their favourite artist’s back catalogue. The simplicity of his recipes, the use of a handful of ingredients in an interesting way. So many of those recipes have made it in to our everyday without even needing to look at the book anymore – we don’t even know the name, it’s just favourite stirfry, favourite pork, Bill’s curry chicken • 4. The Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book – you can’t have been a kid in the 70s without this having played a huge role in your life • 5. Ottolenghi – You know those friends who were so excited about going to see Adam Lambert and Queen

or those eagerly anticipating the Rolling Stones. I am feeling exactly the same about Yotam Ottolenghi’s November visit to these shores. I have the tickets. I have the books. I’ve watched the TV series. My sister was the enabler for this worship, arriving back from a trip to London raving about this place she went to with amazing big bowls of salad and these huge meringues. I got the book. I got an addiction. His newest book Plenty More is out this week in the UK. I’m considering sleeping out for its release here. As the bookshelves fill and I constantly rejuggle to find space, I get excited what new directions future books will take me.
Food, craft beer and great music
Ingredients: Two Large eggplants – cut 1cm cubed and salted One onion – small diced Two sticks celery – small diced Two cloves garlic – crushed 500 grams crushed tin tomatoes One cup white wine One tbls baby capers Two tbls torn green olives Two tbls good quality vinegar One tbls sugar 10 Basil leaves One tbls chopped fresh parsley
Method: 1. Heat a large heavy pan with vegetable oil. Pat dry the eggplant as it will be damp from being salted. Fry the eggplant in the hot oil until golden brown and set aside. The eggplant will soak up the oil. Make sure the oil is hot so it fries and not stews. 2. In the same pan sauté the onion, celery, garlic without colouring until soft. Add the white wine and reduce until all the liquid is evaporated. Add the tomatoes, bring to the boil then turn down to a simmer. 3. Add the capers, olives, vinegar and sugar. Continue to cook for about 30 minutes on a gentle heat. You want to cook out the tomatoes and let the flavours develop. 4. Taste the sauce and season, it may need more vinegar or sugar to have a nice sweet and sour balance. Set aside to cool slightly. 5. Last fold in the cooked eggplant and the fresh herbs. Stir in a little extra virgin olive oil to give it a nice shine.

HAPPY DAYS RECORDS PRESENTS
T was while watching The Hangover 2, all four men waking up with hangovers from the night before, that the name of Lawrence Mooney’s upcoming comedy tour title came from. Turning to his wife, he asked her why she thinks men get so drunk. She looked at Lawrence and said “because men can’t handle their own realities, and they’re all stupid little liars.” This light bulb moment for Mooney was the motivation behind the Stupid Liar Tour, taking place across Victoria in October and November. “My little lies of self-deception, those little incremental lies, like ‘I’m going to lose a few kilos’, are what gets me. “We all need to be able to self-mock and self-reflect. As Joan Rivers said, ‘if we can’t laugh at ourselves, we may be missing the biggest joke of all’,” he said. “None of us can deal with the realities of the world, we’d curl up into little fetal positions.” As a child, but not one to tell big porky pies, Mooney recalls fibbing to his parents about seeing Santa on Christmas morning. “When I started talking about the flashing lights and reindeers on the roof, that’s when my parents looked at me funny. “My wife likes to lie for fun, she’s a deceitful liar,” Mooney said
with a laugh. It was during an episode of The Voice when Lawrence asked his wife how one of the judge’s got the scars on his face. “Without hesitation she turned around and told a big whopper: ‘it was during a terrorist attack in Nigeria, shrapnel had blown into his face and given him those scars’,” he said. Mooney decided he would use the same line in an episode of his popular show, Dirty Laundry Live on ABC 2. “We were talking about Seal and Delta’s break up, and I turned around to one of the guys and asked if they knew where Seal’s scars on his face came from. I was quickly told I wasn’t to make stuff up again,” he said. However, it didn’t stop Lawrence inventing a breed of dog for his Labradoodle cross Spoodle. Deciding it was too confusing when talking to his friends and family about his dog, Lawrence came up with the breed of ‘Groiden’, pronounced with a roll of the ‘r’, claiming Rupert is in fact a Spanish sheep dog. A belly full of laughs, Bendigo welcomes the comedian to kickoff his Stupid Liar Tour. You can see his stand up comedy show on October 9 at the Capital Theatre. – Jasmin Bradshaw
Take a journey EARNESTLY confessing his life’s travels, Steve Smyth is making international tracks and is heading straight to Bendigo. Off the back of a new album, Exits, Smyth will embark on a national tour, stopping in Bendigo on October 3. Woven with a chilling honesty and an electrified sense of self, Exits shares all of life’s emotions. “There are different elements, two opposing juxtapositions of emotions and how intertwined they become. Whatever goes up must come down,” he said. “Pushing into something vibrant, gritty and sometimes violent, then something tender, fragile, these are the emotions that happen in a day for us.” With air-time on Double J and local stations, and sets along side The Killers and Angus and Julia Stone, Smyth is taking his music to the world.
STEVE SMYTH “I think everyone is trying to find a unity and share in each other’s journey,” he said. “Music is one way I deal through it and express it somehow.” Smyth said he wanted listeners to be taken on a journey, to travel through their music connection. “I grab hold of other music that gives me the same
environment and it’s one where I can feel safe. Because it’s coming from a good place,” he said. Locals can catch a glimpse of Steve at the Golden Vine Hotel in Bendigo on October 3 at an over-18 event. For tour dates visit www.stevesmyth.com.au – Christine McGinn

Result of lobbying J
AMES SERVICE MLA was the member of the Legislative Council for Castlemaine, he was at that time also premier of the colony of Victoria. During his period as premier, he had come under intense pressure from lobby groups to restrict the sale of opium. There were a number of organisations that led the charge to restrict the availability of opium in the community. Among the groups that were part of the campaign that came to a head in mid 1884 were the Council of Churches, the Church of England, Women’s Christian Temperance Union and significantly the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. The restricted access to freely available opium for the Chinese community came as a real shock. After all the colonial government had made in 1868, for example, some £26,000 from import duties, these had increased over the following decade. There were 10 Chinese opium sellers in Bendigo at that time and it was estimated that about 40 per cent of all Chinese had been smoking opium since well before they had left China. The local price was £1-17s for 170 grams. A J Ah Poo, the Chinese Interpreter for Bendigo, felt it was time to set the record straight in respect of opium. Letters from Ah Poo to the press in 1884 pointed out the heavy duty payable on the importation of opium. The Chinese were most
annoyed as they felt the new legislation was an attack on opium sellers. He went on to state that it was the British East India Company that, through gun boat diplomacy, had foisted this highly profitable narcotic onto the Chinese. The Chinese had been accustomed to smoking opium since they were young and it would be just as unfair if suddenly the government had “made the sale of grog illegal”. He reiterated that many Europeans would be equally
It was the British East India Company that... had foisted this highly profitable narcotic onto the Chinese upset by such government action. Finally Ah Poo wrote, “On behalf of respectable hardworking storekeepers I am asked to protest against the attack which has been so vigorous and suddenly made upon them”. Many scenarios were played out throughout Victoria where the police attempted to entrap the Chinese who conducted smoking houses and those who were opium sellers. A case was brought to court by the Registrar of the Pharmacy
Board of Victoria against Ah Lung for the sale of opium. Ah Lung, it was pointed out, was neither a legally qualified medical practitioner, or registered pharmaceutical chemist. Mr Wilkie appeared for the Pharmacy Board and Mr T J Connelly for the defence. John Riley, from the police, gave evidence that he, along with plain clothes detective constable Smith, had got some opium from Ah Lung and left money on the counter. The opium was in a small tin and it had been analysed that there was sufficient to kill four people. However Mr Connelly pointed out for the defence that the Chinese heated the opium over a small lamp before transferring the small globule to the opium pipe, then it was no longer lethal. H W Shillinglaw, registrar of the Pharmacy Board, pointed out that there had been several deaths through opium poisoning in the past 12 months. John Riley, while at Ah Lung’s place, asked for three or four pipes of opium, and left sixpence on the counter while Ah Lung was in another room. Ah Soon was called by the defence and he stated that Ah Lung had always been unwilling to sell

opium to Europeans. Detective Smith said that he had seen the money on the counter at Ah Lung’s place. Ah Soon stated that he was a gardener and sometimes smoked opium while at Ah Lung’s. The magistrate was somewhat perplexed by the situation however he pointed out that there was nothing criminal in the purchase of opium although there was in selling it. The witness eventually replied that he had not bought the opium at Ah Lung’s or at any other place. It was now about the credibility of the witness. Ah Chow corroborated the statement made by Ah Soon. The magistrate was not satisfied with the evidence and dismissed the case.
ing to reflect how our local gaols have changed over time. The great thing about the Ulumbarra theatre is that it is so close to the centre of town, as is the old Castlemaine gaol. This made for an exciting life when escapes were a regular feature of town life. Townsfolk would often become involved in the attempted apprehension of the prisoner, resulting in many a yarn around town. One well known escape involved a famous Bendigonian, Jacob Cohn, of Cohns soft drink fame. John Rogers was a young prisoner who had spent hours emptying “nightsoil” into pits where the bowling greens are now, when he made a break for it towards Eaglehawk. He was first tackled by a milk-boy, who was bowled over by the desperate fugitive, until he met his match in the steadfast Mr Cohn, who showed why he has gone down in history as one of Bendigo’s greatest characters. Rogers threw a large rock at Cohn, who avoided it and attacked the escapee with his cane, bringing him down and wrestling him into submission. Rogers was rewarded with another six months added to his three month sentence. – Peter Thompson

SANCTUARY: Joao Teixiera de Faria.
The power of spiritual healing
F
OR the first time ever, John of God will be visiting Sydney and holding a three-day prayer and meditation event. Known around the world as John of God, and considered by many as the greatest spiritual healer of our time, Joao Teixiera de Faria is a simple farmer with a profound spiritual gift. Every week thousands come from every corner of the globe to visit him at his healing sanctuary in a small village in rural Brazil. Visitors include medical doctors, scientists, priests, theologians and people from all walks of life and religious beliefs. Mr Faria is quick to point out he does not heal the person, and that any healing is the work of God and the benevolent spirits that accompany him on his mission.
New name for relationship services organisation
ENTACARE has changed its name to CatholicCare Sandhurst to more clearly reflect the faith-based nature of the organisation. CatholicCare Sandhurst will continue to provide high quality counselling, family dispute resolution, and family education and support services to all people without discrimination. “While we have a new name we will continue to ensure the communities we serve know that our services are openly available to everyone,” executive director Peter Richardson said. “We will remain true to our enduring vision: resilient people, stronger families, and connected communities.”
CatholicCare Sandhurst has also recently secured a five-year contract with the Australian Government Department of Social Services to continue providing children, parenting and relationships services. “The communities we work with across the Loddon Mallee and Goulburn Murray regions can be assured that CatholicCare Sandhurst will continue to provide services that support and strengthen individuals and communities.” “Our commitment remains strong – we’re here to stay,” Mr Richardson said. CatholicCare Sandhurst at 65 Baxter Street Bendigo, phone 5438 1300.
The fact remains, however, that thousands of people credit him and his work as the reason why they overcame illnesses that were considered incurable by modern medical standards. One of the healing tools that John of God designed and frequently prescribes is taking time on one of his crystal light beds. Bendigo now has one of these beds, direct from John of God’s Healing Centre in Brazil. For more information on where to experience the magic of John of God’s Crystal Light Bed visit www.johnofgod-sydney.com.au Alternatively, contact the Custodian of the Bed, Sandra on 5449 3432.

John of God is the world-renowned Brazilian Healer spoken about by Oprah, Dr.Wayne Dyer & millions of others who have been healed by him. John of God developed crystal beds using Brazilian clear quartz crystals to generate colour and light therapy to cleanse and raise the vibration of your energy centres. The number of his Crystal Light beds is restricted as he personally selects the crystals and guarantees them. Only those given specific permission by him are allowed to take one of his Crystal Light beds from his Healing Centre (the CASA) in Brazil. What is a Crystal Light bed? It has seven extremely clear and highly polished quartz crystals suspended above the bed. Each of the crystals has been cut to a specific frequency. Each crystal is aligned above one of the seven human energy centres. Coloured lights, chosen to match the vibrational frequency of the energy centres, Stronger Relationships Trial radiate energy directly $200 subsidy for marriage/relationship education and/or couple counselling through the crystals to each energy centre of the spiritual and physical body to cleanse, balance and align your energies.

If YOU are an innovative, enthusiastic, game-changing, paradigm-busting leader who wants to stop homelessness.
SIDNEY MYER HAVEN GENERAL MANAGER FULL TIME, ONGOING, BENDIGO I’m not asking for much. Just the ďŹ nest, homelessness services manager to take on Australia’s newest, most innovative homelessness support program for young single adults, young single parents, and often struggling small families. Haven; Home, Safe – Bendigo’s own and Australia’s only fully integrated Housing and Homelessness organisation – exists to eliminate homelessness in the catchments areas in which we operate. Homelessness services have, shall we say, had mixed results in the past. We work with people who have fallen through the patchy, half-formed, under-resourced, badly-funded ‘safety net’. These are the people most at risk in our community. Sadly, (we don’t normally say this out loud) not all of the people we work with are ready for change, and we’ll stick with them until they are, but there are some who are ready and willing to step up, if only there were enough resources, opportunities, and support out there. Well, things are about to change with a new model of service, housing, and support currently under construction in Bendigo, called the Sidney Myer Haven. The Sidney Myer Haven is a 24/7 staffed, gated community for young homeless adults and their families that will link education, life skills training, and personal support, pre-employment, parenting, and other elements of a dynamic and individually targeted social curriculum. This is quite possibly a World First. The General Manager will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (that’d be me!) as we imagine, develop, implement, experiment, analyse, and then makeover whatever we need to do to make this thing work. If you don’t have a record of absolute commitment and energy, program or project success, if you are not qualiďŹ ed in this or a related ďŹ eld, if you can’t handle interrupted days and the occasional head-holding and hand-wringing moments ‌ well then this gig isn’t for you. If this is you, call my HR people, get the info, have a think about it and call me after that if you like and we can have a chat. This is not a job for the faint-hearted, but it will be an adventure, and best of all we are going to change people’s lives.
Ken Marchingo, Chief Executive Officer.
Closing date for all applications: COB 10 October 2014 Application information and position descriptions for all vacancies are available on our website www.havenhomesafe.org.au. For further details on this position please contact Kerry Ashley on 0417 135 527.

Cleaning advertising feature e
Make your bins Wheelie Wheelie Clean T HE team at Wheelie Wheelie Clean say your wheelie bin is one of the most neglected things on your premises. It is used by everyone in the family and it is a breeding ground for all sorts of germs and bacteria. But it can easily be kept clean and safe. “You don’t use a dirty toilet, so don’t use a dirty bin.” All Wheelie’s cleaning products are user friendly and environmentally safe and 100 per cent biodegradable. Cleaning products are council approved and the water used to clean your bin is recycled and reusable thanks to an on-board filtration system.
Bins are conveniently cleaned on your premises and waste product is disposed of safely and legally at an approved sewage plant. The team at Wheelie Wheelie Clean say a three-monthly clean for domestic bins is generally enough. For public places or anywhere there is food – restaurants, pubs, schools – more frequent bin cleaning is recommended. Why have your bin cleaned by Wheelie Wheelie Clean? It is a water-saving enviro-friendly service that kills germs and bacteria and leaves your bin smelling clean and fresh. For information and bookings phone 0420 926 830 or visit www.dirtybins.com.au

I am a big boy that is going to get bigger. I’m a very handsome boy who is full of energy. I’m extremely social with other dogs, but I can get a bit over excited. I will need further obedience training as I am still a puppy on the inside. Please come and see how wonderful I am.

Spirit in the pink From Page 40 “It’s looking pretty good. The roster itself is looking pretty good,” Bernie said. “With three girls going over with the Opals, while it is going to be a great experience for those girls, their time away will hurt our preparation, but the people we have are all coming back from last year.” Bernie said the team was coming together well as they prepare for a third title in a row. “You can see the excitement around the as group they are doing something they enjoy doing together,” he said. “It has made my job a lot easier. “The only issue is having three players at the Opals, which is a nice problem to have.” Bickley said the club would support Kristi, but said the club had a lot of financial priorities. “We still have significant fundraising to do to meet our budget, let alone enabling Kristi to play. “The board will do everything it can to support any decision Kristi makes,” he said. Bickley said the roster funding limitations were proof more needed to be done to support elite sport pathways in Bendigo. “The costs of competing in the WNBL continue to club every year,” he said. “We need to look at the ways elite sporting teams in Bendigo can secure funding.” Bendigo will host the WNBL preseason tournament from October 10 to 12.

CALLING all social bowlers – a little hint of Germany is on its way to Bendigo next month and you’re invited. Now’s the time to roll up your sleeves, get some mates together, and battle it out, in the South Bendigo Bowls Club Oktoberfest Social Night competition. Taking place every Thursday night between October 2 and October 30 from 6pm, novice bowlers are encouraged to put together teams of four and play in a fun, social environment. Plus, a different German beer will be available each week, at Happy Hour prices. Each night, teams will play two games of 10 ends each, costing $10 per head. Teams must include three non-pennant bowlers. Those wanting to put together a team should register by Monday, September 29, by phoning 5443 4833. The club is also holding a Sportsmen’s Night on October 23, from 7pm. Guests include Steve Glasson and Billy Brownless. – Sam Kane
Membership call for Spirit IF you think the past two WNBL seasons have been exciting, strap yourself in, because it’s almost on again. The Bendigo Spirit kicks off their campaign for a three-peat in three week’s time, and is calling on the community to help them along the way. The Spirit has opened up a heap of new and exciting membership packages to locals keen to go along for the ride. There are child, adult and concessions memberships, which in-
clude access to all 11 home games and a heap of merchandise and sponsor products. There are also three kinds of family memberships, fitting in with the club’s family-friendly philosophy. There is also a three-game membership option. The Bendigo Weekly is also helping out, broadcasting episodes of Bendigo Spirit TV at www.bendigoweekly.com.au The videos are designed to familiarise the public with the Spirit
and its star-studded lineup. First up this week is Opals legend Kristi Harrower, who discusses her future and is the first to take part in a Top Gear-style shooting competition. Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said the opportunity to see some of the best basketballers in the world, here in Bendigo, was another great reason to buy a membership. “After two championships in as many years, the Australian Pork Bendigo Spirit is flying,” he said.
“Here is your chance to be part of the journey towards a third WNBL title. Game night is an electric atmosphere and a unique opportunity to see Australia’s best players on show right here in Bendigo. “Buying a membership is the best way to support the club and save on tickets and merchandise.” Go to www.bendigospirit.com. au to find out more about all the membership options.

Storming to a win
Richards Europe bound BENDIGO Spirit star centre Gabe Richards has flown to Europe to join her Australian Opals team-mates in a last-minute call up to the FIBA World Championship squad in Turkey. The two-time WNBL All-Star Five received the call from Opals coach Brendan Joyce on Saturday night, and says she is looking forward to the challenge. “The call was the last thing I was expecting. “It has been a crazy past 24 hours,” she said on Monday. Over the past two years, Richards has emerged as one of the premier players in the WNBL and played a key role in the Bendigo Spirit’s backto-back championship victories. The call came after Liz Cambage, who was selected for the team, was ruled out after an Achilles injury. Joyce said Richards was one of the most dominant players in the WNBL, and was a major reason behind the Spirit’s success. “We’ve recognised these matureage players who we believe can contribute to the team and translate their form from the WNBL on to the world stage, and Gabe is a glowing example,” he said. The team will open its 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Istanbul against Cuba on Saturday night. The Jayco Opals will also face Korea and Belarus in their Group C fixtures leading into the knockout rounds and eventually the tournament final in the early hours of Monday, October 6. For Bendigo, the Spirit’s campaign for a third straight Wattle Valley WNBL Championship begins on Saturday, October 18, when the team heads to Townsville for a grand final rematch. – Sam Kane

Spirit in the pink By ANTHONY RADFORD
THE Bendigo Spirit will wear a totally pink uniform for their away games this season. The new strip is part of the two-time WNBL champion’s naming-sponsor deal with Australian Pork. Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said the new uniform was spectacular. “Yes, the away strip will be a bit different this year,” he said. “It will definitely stand out on the court. “We are very keen to see the girls in the bright new strip. “We are very excited about our new major naming rights sponsor in Australian Pork.” Bickley said the West Coast Waves also had a pink away strip that was linked to the McGrath Foundation. “I’d be keen to have a breast cancer awareness day when we play them,” he said. In other Spirit news, coach Bernie Harrower has revealed the club will have to raise money from the community if legend Kristi Harrower decides to play on this season. The point guard is “still a long way” from making a decision on her playing future according to dad Bernie. Kristi is training with The Spirit, mostly to keep her fitness up and make up the numbers, with three players on Opals duty. With a playing budget full, Bernie is in no doubt what would be required if Kristi played this season. “We certainly would have to go on a fundraising effort and have to go out to the community and businesses around Bendigo and try to find some money for her,” he said. “The playing budget has been spent. We would have to put out a mercy call.” Bernie is expecting centre Elyse Penaluna to be back by the end of the year, after her second knee injury. Continued Page 38
