Knitting is a class act TEACHER Cos Perley has inspired a knitting frenzy at Bendigo Violet Street Primary School. The Grade 1/2 teacher started with finger knitting and now it’s scarves and a class rug made from each child’s square. Other junior grades have taken up knitting in the investigations knitting corner and all knit in their spare time. Fellow teacher Joy Bruce said it’s grown into a community project. “We have wool and needles donated by a friend of the community and squares coming from parents, grandparents and friends and neighbours,” she said. “Now we also have excellent knitted garments for our school fair craft table. “One of the Grade 2 boys, Tannah, was inspired to start his own scarf. He took it home and inspired his mum to start knitting again, so the two sisters scored a scarf also.” Tannah has now completed his scarf and is on to his next one. “He has an enormous sense of achievement,” Ms Bruce said. “Their perseverance is to be congratulated.” – Steve Kendall WOOL FANS: Bendigo Violet Street Primary School students Saskia and Elijah.

GREATER Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons is attempting to become the first councillor in more than 20 years to serve consecutive terms in the top job. The Bendigo Weekly can reveal Cr Lyons will throw his hat back into the ring again when councillors vote to elect a mayor next month.

Mayor Lyons to bid for another term
Cr Lyons will be up against Whipstick Ward councillor James Williams at the November 11 vote. The Weekly believes the numbers between the two men are quite tight. One inside analysis of how the votes fall at the moment show con-

person for the job and did not want to be mayor herself. Cr Leach refused to comment. If Cr Lyons wins, he will be the first Greater Bendigo mayor to serve two consecutive terms. Cr Lyons was philosophical about his chances.
“I don’t know whether I can win or not, but I will try to keep them honest,” he said. “History shows I can’t win, but I will throw my hat into the ring.” Cr Williams also confirmed he would run. Continued Page 8 W GLANVILLE Page 14

MASTER Builders Australia has released new data showing dwelling approvals are up 14.5 per cent through the year after rising by 3 per cent seasonally adjusted in August. Master Builders Australia chief economist Peter Jones said the jump in building approvals must be seen as a positive in boosting new housing stock to keep a lid on house prices and ensure affordable home ownership.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market
Rate stability a win THIS week’s Reserve Bank board decision to leave the cash rate unchanged at 2.5 per cent has been welcomed as more good news for the real estate industry. In a statement released on Tuesday to coincide with the Reserve Bank’s announcement, Governor Glenn Stevens said that overall, financial conditions remain very accommodative. “Long-term interest rates and risk spreads remain very low. Markets still appear to be attaching a low probability to any rise in global interest rates or other adverse event over the period ahead,” he said. Perhaps it was the final sentence of Mr Stevens’ statement that gave the best indicator on where the Reserve Bank sees interest rates heading, when he said: “On present indications, the most prudent course is likely to be a period of stability in interest rates.”

AUCTION: 21 Neale Street, Saturday 10am. “As the RBA says, supply factors are critically important – the supply response determines whether additional demand feeds into higher prices or not,” Mr Jones said. “Alarmist calls by some commentators for measures to curtail so-called speculative investment in housing need to be treated with caution to ensure they do not stymie the residential building upswing,” he said. TWEED Sutherland First National will kick off a busy weekend for local auctions when a three bedroom Victorian weatherboard home with a Commercial 1 Zoning at 52 McIvor Road goes under the hammer today, Friday October 10 from 11am.
Located less than 1.4 kilometres from the CBD and with a huge 26 metre frontage to McIvor Road, the property offers a multiple of options to the successful vendor (STCA). Tweed Sutherland will also offer at auction a majestic landmark four bedroom home at 21 Neale Street Kennington, on Saturday from 10.30am. Currently utilised as a business, the home sits on a 1.25 acre prized corner allotment within walking distance of the CBD. ELDERS will auction a three bedroom brick home on a 447 square metre location at 1 Howard Street Quarry Hill this weekend. Saturday’s auction, sched-
uled for 11.30am, is billed as a rare opportunity to purchase “a blank canvas for contemporary innovation” as the property is located in one of the most soughtafter and enviable positions in Bendigo. Elders will also auction a charming 39.5 acre property featuring a three bedroom solid brick home with nine foot ceilings, a study/fourth bedroom, open plan kitchen and dining area and stunning rural vistas. The property, at 623 Axe Creek Road Strathfieldsaye is just 15 minutes from Bendigo and only five minutes from local schools and shops at Strathfieldsaye. The auction starts at 2pm on Saturday.

POVERTY FIGHT
Water price doubles By ANTHONY RADFORD
BENDIGO’S water prices have increased by 125 per cent in the past 10 years. A household using 165 kilolitres of water in the 2005-06 financial year paid $546. In 2014-15, a Bendigo household using the same amount of water will pay $1229. The cost of water in those bills rose from $151 to $358 over the decade. The water access component of the bill rose from $112 in 20506 to $216 in 14-15. The largest jump was in sewer access, with $282 paid in 05-06 and $655 in 14-15. There was a large jump in infrastructure costs over the decade,
but it wasn’t consistent. In 05-06 Coliban Water invested $19m in infrastructure. This financial year it will be $48m. However, the superpipe and the need to beat the drought saw $141m invested from 2007 to 2009, with bills hardly shifting. Coliban managing director Jeff Rigby said that was the problem. “An average water bill for Bendigo today is about double compared to around a decade ago, however there are major contributing factors that need to be taken into account,” he said. “Prolonged drought and water restrictions led to lower water consumption, and this actually lowered water bills, but it impacted heavily on income over

several years. “For the five-year period from 2008 to 2013, we experienced a shortfall in our projected revenue of around $90 million.” Mr Rigby said Coliban borrowed $338 million over the past decade. “This level of borrowing was necessary as cash flows over the
period were well below what was needed to fund required infrastructure investment and to meet operating costs,” he said. “We have focussed on containing our controllable operating costs and capital works in order to minimise the subsequent bill impacts on customers. “We invested in infrastructure
Cooking in full swing BENDIGO Foodshare has been overwhelmed with financial support in its fundraising campaign for $100,000. Since Wednesday’s launch, Bendigo Foodshare has raised $37,000 towards its campaign, some in-kind, to fund annual operational costs. The Community Foundation of Central Victoria has given $12,000, Beck Legal donated $3000, Rotary Club of Bendigo gave $2500 and the Y Service Club of Bendigo chipped in $2000. Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters and Liberal candidate for Bendigo West Michael Langdon each chipped in $500. For every $1, 16 healthy meals can be provided to locals in need. Bendigo Foodshare operations manager Ray Butler said they had an overwhelming response from the community. “It’s beyond words. Some of the donations are in-kind. There is an organisation that is crowd-sourcing to put 20 solar panels on our roof,” he said. “We were really blown away by the level of support.
to ensure security of supply and that was critical during and after the millennium drought. “The Goldfields Superpipe and the water entitlements needed to draw water from the Goulburn system cost in excess of $100 million, and it was our major delivered project in that period. “This major investment secures supply to the Greater Bendigo region for the next 100 years and it will be recovered over several generations of water customers.” There will be some relief for locals, with the water bills expected to stay the same for the next three financial years. However, from 2016 to 2018, infrastructure spending will more than halve.
Welfare groups join forces BENDIGO welfare agencies will partner up for a number of events during Anti-Poverty Week next week. Bendigo TAFE and Youth Central students will host a barbecue next Wednesday in the library gardens on Hargreaves St between 11am and 2pm. The event will also include some light music and aims to encourage people who are experiencing poverty to take part in some social inclusion at no cost. Haven; Home, Safe will partner with the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Bendigo Community Health, Coliban Water, Bendigo Family and Financial Service and St Luke’s Anglicare to host a Finances and Hardship Workshop on Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The workshop is aimed at organisation staff and brings together ways to create positive outcomes for people who find themselves in

Eaglehawk Primary School principal Kerrie McMillin said program’s success required Bendigo Foodshare’s support. “Bendigo Foodshare allows us to supplement the things we have in our garden. “Our ability to run the program into the future means we have to be able to get food elsewhere.” The not-for-profit organisation collects food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it throughout

tough situations. BCH will also hold a health soup kitchen in Hargreaves Mall from noon to 2pm on Thursday. The aim of the event is to open their soup kitchen to the public, raise awareness and offer assistance from a service level. The BCH team will offer free soup samples and display statistics around the relevance of poverty in the area, as well as provide information around services. Bendigo’s welfare agencies will also hold a Bring Your Bills event in the Bendigo library from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Thursday. The event encourages those experiencing tough financial times to bring their bill or debt information in to discuss them with a financial counsellor. No appointment is needed, and there will also be displays from other services who may be a help in such circumstances.

HUNTLY residents will have a safer place to cross, if Labor wins next month’s state election. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said Labor would commit $150,000 to build a pedestrian operated light crossing on Midland Highway. “We have listened very carefully to the concerns of the Huntly community. They want to see improvement to road safety, the installation of a pedestrian crossing with lights that will slow down the traffic that will allow people, especially young kids, to cross safely,” she said. “The pedestrian crossing will be an important step in slowing down the traffic, enabling families and members of the community to cross the road much more safely. “We would want to move on this quickly (once elected), recognising that this is a priority for the Huntly community.” The Huntly Kinder Volunteer Parent Committee launched the petition in March, to install a safe pedestrian crossing on the trafficridden Midland Highway. About 260 signatures were given for a safe on-demand traffic lights to cross outside school-hours. Petition organiser Kathryn Stanislawkski said it was terrific news for the community and a great boost to their cause. “This means we can safely cross the road at any time of the day. It is fantastic,” the mother of three children said.
SAFER OPTION: Jacinta Allan has pledged Labor funding for a crossing at Huntly. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “A crossing is what we need before an accident happens.” Huntly is experiencing a 6.49 per cent annual population growth rate with an increase in families moving in. Vic Roads would have to determine the exact location of the crossing. Huntly Primary School principal Craig Burnett said he was relieved action would be taken. “It is an exciting encasement. We know a majority of our kids are on the eastern side of the highway and get-
ting across at times when the school crossing is not working, is pretty dangerous,” he said. “There is significant traffic on our roads, it will provide a safer place to cross for our students and their families. “A walking track on this side (western) would be great as well. This gives people a safer option to cross the road.“ Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley said he would fight to secure funding for the people of Huntly, if elected. – Christine McGinn

Headspace grows
EXCLUSIVE By ANTHONY RADFORD
THE State Government has given Headspace Bendigo $350,000 for a new expanded home. Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge will make the announcement today. Ms Wooldridge said the new site, the former Prouds Hi Fi in Pall Mall, means Headspace Bendigo’s partners, including Bendigo Community Health, Youth Support Advisory Service, Bendigo Health and Mind Australia, can support more young people, earlier in the onset of their illness and potentially prevent long-term issues.
“The new site brings together a strong, multi-disciplinary partnership covering primary health, mental health, alcohol and drug treatment and acute services,” she said. “This investment means that young people in Ben-

A QUEUE of hundreds of Julia Gillard fans lined up at the Bendigo Marketplace yesterday to have the former prime minister autograph her recently published memoir My Story. Due to start signing at noon in the Big W store, Ms Gillard was 15 minutes late but the delay just added to the tension and excitement in the crowd, which stretched from the store deep into the Marketplace foyer. Security staff looked flustered at times as they tried to manage the excited fans as well as the media. Even Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters was waiting in the queue to have her copy signed. But having sighted Ms Chesters, Ms Gillard said she was looking forward to chatting with her after the signing. Labor Party supporter Lynda Newton said that
she arrived at Big W at 10.45am in order to ensure her place in the queue. “I was weeping for my country that we’d lost her when she signed my copy,” Ms Newton said. “She was our first female prime minster and she put through so much fantastic legislation. “She recognised my ‘It’s Time’ badge from Gough Whitlam’s 1972 campaign. “Someone in the crowd said that I was showing my age. But I wear the badge proudly.” Like many in the crowd Ms Newton was thrilled to meet Ms Gillard. It was also clear Ms Gillard’s retirement from the political scrum suits her. Smiling and relaxed she obviously took pleasure in the occasion. – Diane Dempsey

COLONEL Sanders is set to move into Eaglehawk, building a $1.4 million restaurant. Plans for a single-storey KFC on a former motor repair and garage site on High Street have been lodged with Greater Bendigo council. About 100 patrons will be able to dine at the 374-square-metre fast-food chain with 30 car parks and a loading bay in the works. Time-poor customers will also be able to use the drive-through, with room for eight cars to queue. Eight full-time and 50 casual staff will be employed to run the fast-food restaurant. “The new KFC building adopts a contemporary design and architectural theme. The overall maximum building height is 5.95m,”
FAST FOOD: KFC plans to build a new restaurant on this garage site. the application said. “The proposed building has been purpose designed and is well articulated through the use of different materials, finishes and varied architectural treatments applied to the facades.” According to the application,
Book now for lunch TIME is almost running out to secure your spot at this year’s Biggest Bloke’s Lunch. With only 15 tables left, locals need to book their seats to gain a prime position ready for the event’s special guests. Bali bombing survivor Jason McCartney will inspire locals about his journey from tragedy to survival. Event organiser Keith Sutherland said he had heard Mr McCartney’s talk before and knows it will be empowering. “Jason epitomises the Australian fighting spirit and the sheer determination overcoming adversity is quite amazing. After he suffered such horrible burns he made it back to play AFL again with North Melbourne,” Mr Sutherland said. St John of God CEO Darren Rogers will also share his prostate cancer journey and the importance of regular check ups.
the garage has sat vacant and derelict for five years. “The location, bulk, form and appearance is in keeping with the character and appearance of adjacent buildings and the heritage place, and will not adversely affect the natural or cultural significance
of the heritage place,” the application. “The proposed site and building signage has been designed as an integrated package to identify and complement the restaurant.” Cyclists will be able to store their bikes in the eight racks while stopping in for a meal. The main KFC entry would face High Street, with vehicular entry to the car park and drivethrough on Brazier St, carpark entry and exit from Parsonage Grove and a drive-through left turning lane only to High St. The application also seeks approval for nine signs including a 8.1m high illuminated pylon sign with a KFC chicken “bucket”. “The proposed signs will not contribute to excessive visual clutter or visual disorder,” the application said. Council are yet to consider the plans.
HAVING A BALL: The lunch is fun with a serious message.
This year’s November 14 event kicks off at the Civic Gardens with a barbecue before continuing to Palmers Gym in Mundy Street. An auction and raffle will keep the fundraising effort high with advertising vouchers from Gold FM, Win TV, Local Phone Book, and the Bendigo Weekly. A lucky gent could win a new barbecue from Hume & Iser, an accommodation package, a cast iron TV stand, an Asahi beer package and mini bar fridge or an outdoor table from Natural Living. Five $50 meat trays will also be raffled with two $1000 Bolton’s vouchers, food vouchers from La Piazza, Boundary Hotel, Bridge Hotel, Rising Sun Hotel or Barzurk. Funds raised will go towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Tickets cost $100 and can be bought from the Weekly’s Julie Batey on 5440 2500 or Keith Sutherland on 0418 509 430.

Greens to launch
AUSTRALIAN Greens leader Christine Milne will be in Bendigo today to officially launch the local candidates’ campaigns. Greens candidates for Bendigo East and Bendigo West, respectively Jennifer Alden and John Brownstein, will be welcomed at The Capital. Ms Milne said it was a pleasure to come to Bendigo and see the candidates’ enthusiasm for their community. “They’re so engaged. They’ve built relationships and professional experience in everything from teaching to health services, local business, and importantly, politics,” she said. “The Greens are working really hard to maximise opportunities for regional centres like Bendigo. “Issues around food security, renewable energy and social support are front and centre, and it’s great to see that drive to build a more caring community embodied so strongly by the candidates we’ve launched.” Ms Alden said Central Victoria was feeling the impacts of climate change on various fronts including high temperatures, extreme weather and people. “The Greens have consistently advocated for action on climate change. We support investment in renewable energy and the jobs and opportunities that would flow from that for our community,” she said. Mr Brownstein said pokies were worsening poverty. Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber will also be in town to launch Northern Victoria Region Upper house candidate Jenny O’Connor’s campaign today. Ms Milne and the candidates will visit the Mount Alexander Fruit Gardens to understand their business. Ms Milne will also host a threecourse fundraising dinner at St Paul’s Anglican Church hall in Myers Street, Bendigo at 7pm. Tickets cost $35 for concessions or $50 to $75 for a “keen green” with a raffle on this Friday night. Locals will also have a chance to meet Ms Milne at the Bendigo Community Farmers Market tomorrow at 9am.

The project has attracted wide community interest.

Battling violence By DIANNE DEMPSEY
A THREE day conference was held in Bendigo this week to tackle the issue of domestic violence. Violence Prevention – It’s Everybody’s Business was organised by Women’s Health Loddon Mallee and funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program. Delegates came from regional and metropolitan centres and represented a variety of organisations including health and welfare agencies, as well as media agencies. Keynote speaker, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay, impressed delegates with his insight into domestic violence and strategies for its prevention. “Police see the pointy end of family violence. Last year we saw 65,000 incidents of family violence and there is no sign of those figures abating,” he said. “We need to get young men to think and talk about this issue,” he said, referring to what he called “courageous conversations”. “These conversations might take place in pubs and clubs where violence against women is openly condemned,” he said. “Fathers also need to be careful about how they talk to their sons. The onus should not be put on the girls to be careful but the boys to be respectful and responsible towards girls and women,” he explained. Commissioner Lay also proposed that domestic violence be made part of men’s annual health
former husband murdered her son, he virtually sentenced her to a lifetime of pain. “You have to work out how you move ahead,” she said. “I am working now to help every woman and child live in safety. “The media has generally been very good to me. I appreciate the sensitive way articles have been written. However I’d like to see the media continue to gain insight and to change the way they report domestic violence. “I’d like to see a shift in blame.

“People asked me why I let my son see his father. “We should be condemning the perpetrator, rather than talking about the victim. “I realised we have long way to go as far as educating men about domestic violence on Grand Final Day. I was watching Tom Jones singing to that huge crowd and thinking oh great, he’s singing one of my favourite songs, but then I listened to the lyrics: At break of day when that man drove away I was waiting I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door She stood there laughing I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more PK Page 15

ART WORK: A Karen worker at Luv-a-duck.
Diversity on view AN exciting photographic exhibition celebrating cultural diversity through the resettlement of refugees in a western Victorian town is about to come to Bendigo. Seeking Refuge in Nhill highlights the journey and settlement of members of the Karen community in Nhill. Comprising 18 snapshots by Natimuk photographer Melissa Powell, the exhibition will go on display in the Goldfields Regional Library, Hargreaves Street, Bendigo for two weeks from Friday, October 24. Mayor Barry Lyons will launch the exhibition in Bendigo. Its arrival in Bendigo fol-
lows a highly successful staging at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne. The Bendigo exhibition is part of major event organised by Rural Australians for Refugees, Bendigo entitled “Our Refugee Story”, which aims to put a human face on the asylum seeker issue by telling real stories about refugees. A full day program is planned for the library on Saturday, October 25 and will include public discussion led by prominent Australians involved in the refugee issue, performances, readings and music. Seeking Refugee in Nhill was first launched to coincide with Harmony Day in March

VULNERABLE road users will be the focus of Victoria Police efforts this month. State bicycle operations coordinator Sergeant Arty Lavos said Operation Halo raised awareness of dangers faced by cyclists and other vulnerable road users. “Not giving way, ignoring signals and speeding are among the most common causes of collisions involving cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians,” he said. “We want all road users to be aware of their responsibility to not only keep themselves safe but to look out for, and look after, each other.” A MAN, in his late teens, was taken to Bendigo hospital, suffering leg burns, following a reported explosion on Sunday night. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the teenager was in a “serious but stable condition”. Emergency services were called to the scene of a reported explosion at a Heritage Drive property in Sedgwick.

CFA and ambulance crews attended the incident after a man aged in his late teens was reported to have suffered burns following the explosion. There was no resulting fire, but CFA crews remained at the scene after the incident. “We went more as a precaution to ensure eve-
rything was safe,” a CFA spokesperson said. THE CFA was called to a grass and scrub fire in Marong on Sunday night. Two CFA trucks attended the Sterry Road incident at 8.30pm and put out the fire at 9pm. CFA members quickly controlled the fire.
Plan to reduce toll COMPLACENT drivers are at the heart of a new Victoria Police approach to reduce the road toll on country roads. The force has rewritten the rules with a new Safer Country Roads Plan 201418 to reduce road trauma through targeted strategies and increased police presence. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said more booze buses, police on motorbikes and automatic licence plate recognition technology to catch offenders would be used. “Unfortunately local people are being killed on local roads. They become complacent, fatigued, distracted, they use the excessive speed, they need to slow down and take care on our roads,” Asst Com
Hill said. He said Victoria Police would consider changing speed limits to ensure drivers were not killed while on our roads. “We urge all country people to rethink how they use their roads and use them more safely.”
We urge all country people to rethink how they use their roads Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said speed, drugs, alcohol, fatigue, distraction, inexperience or driver error were often to blame. Asst Comm Hill said road safety was everyone’s responsibility. “This is a focus of our organisation and our road

toria.” Drivers are 40 per cent more likely to have a serious injury on regional roads than in metropolitan areas. “We are going to be focused on speed enforcement, create more enforcement strategies, use more technology and equip-
ment in country Victoria,” Asst Com Hill said. “We are going to rethink our drink and drug driving campaigns in country Victoria. “We will double the number of drug testing in country Victoria.” The strategy replaces the Victoria Road Trauma Reduction Strategy 201114. Road trauma support services educator Ken Jones educates people, who through the courts, are ordered to undertake diversion programs before getting behind the wheel. “I was hit by a car. I’ve lost an arm and a leg and I’ve had to live with that for 39 years,” he said. “Believe me it can happen to anyone.”

bendigo RIDING TO WORK: Melissa Douglas, Michael Smyth and Karoline Klein.
By NICOLA DUNNICLIFF-WELLS
RIDING to school was once commonplace, in the 1970s most kids enjoyed the benefits of active travel to school without even thinking about it. Now that only two in 10 Australian children ride to school regularly, people have begun thinking about what the other eight are missing out on. Children who are active on the way to school are more likely to get their recommended hour or more of exercise a day, an important factor in preventing obesity and disease. They are also, according to Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program, more ready to learn when they arrive. What’s more, fewer cars are on the road – and at the school gates. So why don’t more people
do it, especially in Bendigo where obesity rates are among the nation’s highest? The reasons are varied – and compounded by the fact that driving is now the norm. For my family, a major hurdle was getting out of the house earlier. Although I always imagined we would ride or walk, we mostly drove during my daughter’s prep year – riding with a tired preppy and a three-year-old in tow was too challenging. But I didn’t like always driving. I never had time to exercise myself, and paying $80 for petrol rankled when I knew it would mostly be used for short trips. So the following year I resolved we would try to ride more. That was all very well for me, but I needed an incentive for the kids, okay, call it a bribe.
So here was my plan: For one month, I would put $1 in a jar for each trip we didn’t use the car, and at the end we’d share the spoils. I also wanted to show that we could choose how we spend our money, choosing not to drive meant we could use petrol money for something more fun. Everyone embraced the scheme, and we enjoyed unexpected benefits – coming home became a lovely time to chat and play, and the children were more likely to keep playing afterwards, instead of going straight for TV. By the end of the month we had $32 and our petrol bill was cut by a third. We don’t always ride every day, but it is now our default mode for getting to school. I am certainly happier and healthier and I’m pretty sure the kids are too.

IN full bloom, HardHill will open its doors and garden to celebrate its 140th birthday with a good cause. Greater Bendigo councillor Peter Cox and his wife, Annette Wiles, will open their home to raise scholarship funds to send youth to school in Maubisse. “The Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee has started a campaign to raise $10,000 for education scholarships in East Timor,” he said. “This will complement its work with many other community organisations in building new education and community infrastructure in the Maubisse sub district.” A raffle, stall, morning and afternoon tea will also

Its builders, Thomas and Sarah Evans, had 13 children and built the house and its outbuildings from local materials,” Cr Cox said. “Australian artist Justin Gill also lived at HardHill for a period. “He had a retrospective exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1983 and is well known for his art works throughout Australia.” Cr Cox said the property was best described as a ”house in a garden”. “The garden changes with the seasons but the house remains solid along

ONE of Bendigo’s most intriguing and perhaps unknown gardens will soon be open to the public. Ken Maes has surrounded his 106-year -old home, Widecombe House, with a fascinating mixture of succulents, jade trees, melalucas, banksia roses, eucalyp-
tus, pine trees and flocks. But that is just a taste of what you will find here. A gardener for most of his working life, Ken has worked for both Greater Bendigo council and Fortuna Villa. His years of experience as a working gardener is reflected in his series of separate gardens
with special themes. These include the Whipstick garden where he has planted natives from the forest, including correa, sticky everlasting and emu bushes; he has his own version of Stonehenge and the nine maidens of Penzance. At 87, Ken is amazingly fit and says he
spends fours hours each day in his garden. His garden, at 12 Bright Street Eaglehawk, will be open on October 11 and 12 from 10am to 4pm. Admission is $3. Pot plants will be for sale and the proceeds from the open garden will go to leprosy sufferers. – Dianne Dempsey

Art for art’s sake Trevor Phillips’ letter in the Bendigo Weekly, October 3, calling for a different perspective on the art seating forgets the salient point being made by some letter writers. It is not the art that is in question but the council process of procuring it. It is not the “discount mentality” or any attempt to “forget progress and improvement“ to this city that most writers are objecting to, nor do they forget the proud heritage and democratic stands made by our ancestors. Democracy by the elected representatives of our community is the most important thing to remember, not the arrogance of some unknown official who can over-ride the elected representatives of this community. Do we need un-elected officials doing things behind our elected representatives’ backs? I for one find the seat attractive, but what is not attractive is the attitude by some that they rule the roost and know what is best for ratepayers and citizens in local government affairs of this city. Do we want to go back to commissars, sorry commissioners? Art for Art’s Sake, but democracy is for the people. Bill Collier, Golden Square
Value for money? I am wondering if rural and regional areas of Victoria are getting value for money from this government. For weeks now we have been continually bombarded with full page and double page ads in the newspapers and on television, on what this government is doing and planning to do if they win the next state election. Ads on how they are building better roads and
train services for Victoria, the East West link. I am not convinced the regional rail link will benefit Bendigo travellers, as Bendigo-Melbourne services still have to share the line with suburban services from Sunbury to Sunshine. Another pie in the sky announcement is the train link to Tullamarine airport, no costs being given other than it will run every 10 minutes. Now we are getting ads about the duplication of the Tullamarine Freeway, all these promises at the tax payer’s expense and no benefit to the public of rural Victoria. But when it comes to supporting fire-fighters they are still holding back saying they want more evidence to confirm if they got cancer from the smoke, gases and fumes from the various materials. They are still playing games with paramedics and the patients of Victoria, creating a number of problems with long waiting times. They bungled the Morwell fires, and the situation they put the local residents in, and have turned the CFA upside down. This government has no understanding of the disability industry in the treatment of families, clients and workers at the Sandhurst Centre here in Bendigo. This government has turned its back on renewable energy, a number of land owners would welcome the opportunity to get involved in this program, but it appears this government is in step with their federal counterparts who are disbelievers of climate change. So have a look at what this government has done for rural and regional Victoria during its term in office and what promises they are making to be re-elected again. Ivan Kitt, Bendigo
Negativity from sitting MP Maree Edwards’ letter; “Four years go slow”, Bendigo Weekly September 26, reminds us how badly Labor neglected Marong and other areas around Bendigo during its 11 disorganised years in office. It’s true Michael Langdon announced funding for warning lights at Marong Primary School as a candidate in the 2010 election – funding which has been released so the project can be completed. Given Ms Edwards’ claimed interest in the school it’s surprising she hasn’t noticed the changes made to its entrance during the construction of its new $810,000 Early Childhood Development Centre opened in 2013 by Minister Wendy Lovell. The new centre in Leslie Street meant the crossing works on the Calder Highway were less urgent than during Labor’s time in office, when as we all know nothing was said or done about installing lights or illuminated signs by Ms Edwards’ former boss, Bob Cameron. However, new subdivisions being developed to the schools’ west means the crossing will soon become busy again so the lights and signs Mr Langdon fought for in 2010 are now being installed. Ms Edwards’ letter is just another one of the negativity-filled screes which have characterised her time as an MP – she’s not said a word about the crossing since elected until its construction was announced last week – she’s spent most of her time as an MP trying to get council to waste $7 million on a silly beach next to an old muddy dam instead. The Federal Government’s planned taxation review provides an ideal opportunity to address two issues impacting on council’s capacity to deliver services and infrastructure for the community. Firstly, the tax review must consider axing the Contributions Tax that local government is forced to pay on superannuation shortfalls. The 15 per cent Contributions Tax is nothing but a windfall gain for the Commonwealth, costing the Greater Bendigo council $1.546million in 2013. Local authorities in Victoria were required to pay a massive $79.94m. Imagine how great it would be if councils were instead able to invest this money in capital works and services. Secondly, the review must revisit the decision to freeze indexation on Financial Assistance Grants to local government. Councils such as ours are

that the grants would not be indexed for the next three years, which effectively reduces their real value. In our case, this amounts to about $1.8m less funding. Councils are responsible for $73 billion worth of infrastructure and Financial Assistance Grants have boosted their capabilities to fund this vital infrastructure, maintain 85 per cent of the state’s road
network and pay for crucial community services such as libraries, swimming pools and parks. These cuts, together with the Contributions Tax, are forcing councils to reassess their budget options and are leaving communities vulnerable to scaled back services and potentially deteriorating infrastructure. The Municipal Association of Victoria State Council on October 24 provides an important vehicle to raise the issues and seek sector wide support for the MAV to make a comprehensive submission to the review. Council will move the following resolution at the meeting: That the MAV prepare a comprehensive submission to the upcoming Federal Government review of taxation, advocating for change on a range of issues impacting on local government including, but not limited to: • Removal of the contributions tax on Defined Benefits Superannuation shortfalls • Increased access to the Financial Assistance Grants to local government.

in rates and water bills with little emphasis placed on people’s ability to pay. To her, it was about pushing for equity in education funding to break generational poverty. To her, it was about doing what she can to urge the community’s leaders to do something about it. While there is no easy solution to poverty, at any level, taking it into consideration is important. Ms Chesters called for local community, council and political leaders to consider the city’s poverty levels in their decisions, strategies, budgets and projects. While projects such as art galleries, swimming pools and airports are important for the city’s
growth, they need to be prioritised alongside social and welfare issues. There is little doubt Ms Chesters’ push to focus Bendigo on poverty has done just that. We at the Bendigo Weekly are proud to see Greater Bendigo councillors standing up and listening about rates and spending. Since we ran the first story in August, five Victorian Cabinet Ministers have assured us they are listening to the anti-poverty message. It would be great in the next seven or so weeks before the state election to start seeing some promises from political parties about funding, actual job opportunities and policies that go some way to easing the poverty burden so many locals face. It is then up to the Federal Government to do the same. Only once we see promises, action and results will Ms Chesters, and the Weekly, be satisfied.
The biggest coward AS a much younger reporter and just a few decades ago, I worked in a newsroom where the scanner was a beacon for stories about police and emergency services matters. Whether it was a car crash, a robbery, fire or any other critical incident, the scanner was a key player in how news was sourced and then investigated and reported. It still is today. Looking back, there’s one thing we used to hear on the scanner that today sits uncomfortably with me, and many other of my colleagues who I talk to, and that is the way we all used to be almost dismissive of what was referred to in those days as domestic violence. Back then, it was not unusual for an assault in the family home referred to as just another domestic, which in itself is both a sad and tragic indictment of how common these unacceptable incidences of violence both were and still are. These were matters that
were frowned upon when it came to reporting, both at the time, and later when the courts had their say on the guilt of and punishment for offenders of what we now accept to be one of the most heinous and appalling forms of violence committed almost exclusively upon women.
Violence in any form against anyone is never acceptable That such crimes were mostly committed in the home and/or in front of children and by a person who is or was the victim’s partner, only makes them even more despicable. Fast forward to today and there has been a dramatic shift in awareness and community attitudes towards crimes of family violence. That’s a positive step forward for an issue so saturated in trauma, hardship, betrayal and relationship breakdowns. But there’s so much more

The irony is not lost on me how we now define the highly publicised ‘king hit’ as a ‘coward’s punch’ when I would argue the greatest coward’s punch of them all is the one delivered by any man who assaults a woman.

ABOUT five months ago, the Bendigo Weekly spoke to Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters about a series highlighting poverty in the city. She said one of the main reasons she ran to represent Bendigo was to work out a way to help those thousands of locals struggling each day to make ends meet. To her, it wasn’t just about the homeless and the desolate. To her, it was about the hidden poverty, the 30 per cent of Bendigonians who live below the poverty line. To her, it was about the 40 per cent of suburban households where less than $32,000 a year flowed in. To her, it was about trying to do something to help the 1600 students a day who go to school hungry. To her, it was about the 1400 people aged over 55 seeking urgent help from welfare agencies in the past two years. To her, it was about increases

Memories are made of milk Moving earth on the tractor led to a flashback
T
HERE is nothing I like better on a Friday afternoon than starting the weekend with a job to do. If it involves my tractor, all the better. There was a big pile of earth from a water tank placement, and I set to it with the tractor front bucket. I made a good start on Friday, had another go on Saturday, and finally got stuck in properly on Sunday. It’s pretty monotonous, but I found some pleasure in the regular scooping, driving and dumping around various places on the property where earth was needed. I was filthy with the flying dust, this mingled in with the grease from the tractor as I adjusted and changed implements. I was having a great time. With the end tantalisingly close, the long-suffering Mrs Kendall called me over for a job. She had just picked up a free-to-a-good-home pony and wanted to test it out. “Don’t use the tractor when I am riding,” she said, putting an

end to any work for a while. I stood there lead rein in hand while Mrs K preened and saddled up the horse. She hopped on and plodded around to test out the new red mare. All seemed well and I was allowed back on the tractor, and despite daylight saving it was getting dark. I wanted to finish the job so pushed on tipping earth in all the right places like a big kid with a Tonka toy. As I turned off the tractor, the earth pile site as flat as a bowling green, Mrs K piped up. “I wanted some of that
earth for some raised garden beds,” she said, without any realisation that it was a bit late. I have to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I did wonder if she expected me to scoop it all up again for her. Mind you, on Mrs K’s plus side she arranged for five litres of milk. No, not from the supermarket, but direct from a dairy cow. I have never tasted this before, and so had a big long taste. Magically, the taste transported me back to about age seven. The milk tasted just as it did
when I was a child at school. We used to get one third of a pint a day each, in little glass bottles with foil tops. It was a great delight then, and the taste of real milk made me happy this week. The school milk was pasteurised, but believe me it did not taste like it does now. What have they done to it? What with my Tonka toy tractor and my school milk, looks like I’m regressing to childhood. But I wouldn’t be the first to say I was like a big kid. twitter: @stevekendall1
OK Rita a few basic rules. Do not wear the following: floral blouses or crimplene slacks or slacks with elastic bands. Do not wear track pants or jeans – only in the house. Do not, and I can’t stress this enough, wear nighties, they are bad for the morale. Do not have a perm or push a trolley thing along the street. Here is what you can do. Find a good tailor in the city, hop on the train and order a basic wardrobe consisting of tailored pants, skirts and jackets. It may cost a bit but this is a fundamental investment and if you buy good fabrics, the outfits will see you through to the end. For winter buy wool and for summer cotton, linen and silk mixes. You may buy Sporstcraft or shop at Diggers and go
Opium habits led to crime O
ferred to the bowl on the pipe the smoker would then begin to draw in, and its relaxing euphoric effects would soon make the smoker almost oblivious to their surroundings. As with any narcotic, the desire to repeat the previous experience of its effects becomes completely irresistible, so it was with those who took a pipe of opium. John Bushby a blacksmith from Deniliquin came to Bendigo for a spree back in 1904. He shouted drinks all round to both men and women, then he approached Ah Yet to prepare him a pipe of opium for smoking. When John Bushby began to feel unwell, Ah Yet suggested that he could lay down in his room at the rear of Ah Hoy’s cook shop. So Bushby was coaxed to Ah Yet’s room and lay down on his bed and was soon asleep. However, after some time he felt a hand in his trouser pocket, removing the small canvas bag in which he had his cash. When John Bushby was finally awake, there was no sign of Ah Yet and Bushby’s money bag with its £11 in cash was missing. Bushby reported the theft to the police, who were able to apprehend 23-year-old Ah Yet. This young man had a string of previous convictions. In court Mr Ni Gan who defended Ah Yet stated
for a rural, matriarch look. Hair: If you have enough of it keep dying it, go to the hairdressers every week if possible. Avoid apprentices. Make sure you have a good stylist who will keep the colour subtle and your cut modern. If you are going bald, wear a wig or a hat. Makeup: Start with poly filler as a base and smooth over with a little trowel, then apply foundation. I suggest a highly magnified mirror to check that you are not wearing your lipstick from ear to ear. As to the delicate matter of facial hair, just shave every morning. The neck is a problem, I suggest a range of soft, silky scarves, including cream and white. Try to keep the shoulders back but if the bones are going, I suggest standing with your back to the wall and nailing your shoulders to the wall for a couple of hours a day. So there you are, aging gracefully, smart and well groomed. Alternatively you could let yourself go, sit on the front veranda, drink and gin and tonics, take up smoking and listen to Ball Park Music. You could also turn the hose on little children as they walk past. Twitter: @DearDotty

PIUM smoking was regarded by many people in the 19th and into the 20th century as the province of the Chinese. However it became fashionable in certain sections of western society to indulge in opium smoking. There is no doubt that to a great extent particularly in the 19th century that, the whole ceremonial aspect of opium smoking began to appeal to other community members. Smoking the drug was considered to be a relaxing pastime. Those that became regular participants in opium smoking were soon enslaved to the product and its euphoric effects. It relaxed the smoker, for this reason the pipe was usually prepared by another person, and the drawer of the pipe positioned themselves in a partly laying position. Some wealthy Europeans and Americans, who were partakers of opium smoking in the specially fitted out establishments, would be surrounded by opulence and luxury. All the instruments for smoking were elaborately made of exotic materials, from the containers that held the raw opium, to the lamps and small scoops for heating it and then the pipes with their bowls to which the heated gum was transferred. Once the small globule of gummy like opium was trans-

that Bushby was, “too stupefied with opium and drink to know what he was doing”. Despite the arguments put forward by Mr Ni Gan, Ah Yet received a sentence of 24 months in gaol. Two years after the Bushby case and many others of a similar character the Opium Smoking Prohibition Act came into force. From 1906 onwards there was a constant stream of cases in the courts dealing with those who had been caught in the act of smoking opium. In another case involving a Thomas Parkins, the journalist reporting the matter of his appearance in court, moralised on the subject of opium smoking: “The curse of excessive indulgence in alcoholic liquor is daily exemplified… the equally deadly vice of opium smoking. “Thomas Parkins who appeared on a charge of larceny, shewed [sic] conspicuously in
feature and ‘tout ensemble’ the fatal influence of the pernicious drug. His ghastly aspect, the fact he bore resemblance of a resuscitated corpse, and excited a feeling of horror among all present. “Unquestionably, perhaps, his career in crime might be dated from his first acquisition of the morbid indulgence, destructive alike of body and soul.” Not content with the foregoing report the journalist wrote elsewhere about Thomas Parkins, “whose emaciated and cadaverous appearance betokened him to be an opium smoker’”. Thomas Parkins had stolen three wagon chains valued at 10 shillings, he was sentenced to three months hard labour. The convicted man expressed the wish to be physically thrashed and beaten rather than go to gaol, as there he could not satisfy his opium addiction.
after those in the community that were seen to be less fortunate. The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum (now the Ann Caudle Centre) was not, as they were called, a mental asylum but an institution where those termed “vagrants” (what we would call homeless) were placed in care. In the 19th century, mental health issues were obscured behind terms like “lunatic” and the reasons why someone might be a vagrant were not really addressed. Mental health featured in the public mind as the bizarre behaviour of “lunatics” who had to be restrained, and who were shipped off to places like Sunbury. In the official and press reports relating to the benevolent home, it is clear that many under its care suffered from mental health issues which rendered “normal” life difficult, but were not severe enough to attract the label of “lunatic”. The shelter provided by the home, through a major part of Bendigo’s history, is something of which the community has always been proud, and was traditionally celebrated as part of “Hospital Sunday”. - Peter Thompson

St Francis of the Fields, Strathfieldsaye Primary School, Jenny’s Early Learning Centre, Good Start Kindergarten and Eppalock Primary School are all close by and provide families with some excellent options. Driving along the Eppalock road, you would have no doubt noticed the giant emus at the front entrance to Imagine. These giant sculptures have settled into their new home very nicely, along with some other very impressive timber sculptures taking up residence throughout the estate. These giant emus, specifically designed for Villawood by its sculptural artist in Tasmania, Folko Kooper, pay homage to the history of Emu Creek. As with all of Villawood’s communities, these sculptures are indicative of the level of investment and quality in public art that the Imagine Strathfieldsaye community will feature. The brand new bridge across Emu Creek provides pedestrians and cyclists with safe and interrupted access to schools, as well as the Strathfieldsaye Township just 400 metres away. Choose from a wide selection of quality house and land packages or simply find the perfect block to suit the home of your dreams. With large blocks ranging from 512sqm to 700sqm and priced from only $165,500*, be the envy of all your friends and family and start your new life at Imagine. *Price accurate at time of printing.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, October 10, 2014
Creating innovative communities EARLY DAYS: Rob and Nikki Ketterer, Tim and Diane Robertson, John and Rosemary Stewart, Vanessa Shotton, Ron Bailey, Rory and Katrina Costelloe.
Setting the benchmark TWENTY-FIVE years ago, Rory Costelloe and a group of mates started a small property syndicate in Bendigo; this group has grown into what we know today as Villawood Properties. In 2006, Tony Johnson joined Rory as joint Executive Director and together they have grown the Villawood business into a national operator and one that has achieved a 400 per cent increase in turnover in that time. Already boasting an enviable list of award winning developments in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, Villawood is preparing for the launch of a number of new and exciting projects, as well as some major milestones on its existing developments. The business is poised for continued success. From humble beginnings, Villawood’s business has been built on four pillars: creativity, innovation, passion and community and these are demonstrated in everything the business does and every community that Villawood creates. From these foundations, the business has grown into one of Australia’s leading property developers, setting the benchmark in creating innovative, unique and
sustainable communities around the country. At the heart of what Villawood is all about, is community – creating spaces where people want to live and love to live. Villawood creates opportunities to bring people together and make new friends in their new community and it sets the bar for engaging with its residents and buyers through events, intranets, newsletters, workshops, resident’s only recreational facilities and more. Boasting a long list of awards, Villawood communities have been recognised nationally in a number of areas including environment and sustainability, development excellence and marketing. Philanthropy and community support are key areas of the Villawood business and ones that are clearly very important to all of its staff and Directors. Villawood now supports more than 100 community groups across its developments, with the largest being the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. For the past five years, Villawood has teamed up with Henley Homes to auction off a house and land for the appeal with all proceeds going directly to the hospital.
McCormick Harris Insurance congratulates Villawood Properties on another brilliant development and is extremely proud to have been a key business partner of the Villawood Group for over 25 years. McCormick Harris & Associates Pty Ltd is a privately owned and licensed insurance broking company operating under the trading name of McCormick Harris Insurance.

State of confusion FRESHWATER FISHING
GOOD CATCH: But size regulations vary across the Murray.
NICK ATYEO
T
CAUGHT: Al Chisholm.
Reawakening S
PRING has arrived and while it’s still early in the trout season all the signs are there that things are starting to reawaken. There are a multitude of dragonflies and damselflies buzzing around our waterways and although trout leaping to them can be very difficult to catch, it means there are plenty of mudeyes and damsel nymphs in the water. On a recent club day at Hepburn Lagoon, Bendigo and District Fly Fishing Club’s Alan Chisholm caught a beautiful 700 gram brown trout using a neon damselfly pattern. Best results come from casting damselfly nymph patterns along the edge of drop-offs or weed beds with a very slow retrieve. As the spring warmth becomes more consistent we can expect an improvement in the dry fly fishing, however you are more likely to have success with a nymph pattern. Look in the shallows, around rocks and weed beds and you’ll likely find stick caddis. This is the larval form of the caddis fly that finds shelter in tiny segments of reed, stick or grass and is a prime source of trout food. If you’re wondering what to tie on at this time of year, a stick caddis fly pattern would be a safe bet. Locally, it’s great to see Barkers Creek Reservoir filling up again, where before the recent rains I caught and released a beautiful brown trout of more than a kilo. It was fantastic to see that quality fish have survived the recent low water levels. With the water level now steadily rising there is an abundance of newly submerged terrain for fish to explore. I have recently observed fish feeding within a metre of the water’s edge at Barkers, so you don’t need to cast a long way out. In fact you could easily leave the waders at home and avoid spooking fish by staying well back from the edge. The rivers are open again for trout fishing and although many of them are running too fast due to snow-melt and are discoloured, I have heard reports of some success. Nymphing in the Goulburn River at Thornton has shown results with good brown trout being caught and local brewer Doug Brooke had a rare double hook-up whilst fishing the Rubicon River. Double hook-ups usually result in the loss of one or both fish but Doug managed to land both a rainbow and a brown trout. If you are interested in trying fly fishing come and visit the Bendigo and District Fly Fishing Club stall at the Maiden Gully Community Festival this Sunday from 11am to 3pm at the Maiden Gully Recreation Reserve. For more information on Flyfishing visit www.bdffc.weebly.com or find us on FaceBook. – Steven Charles
HE big news this month for most freshwater fishers is the new regulations centring around Murray Cod. Due to intense lobbying by stakeholders or stubbornness by fisheries we now unfortunately have different regulations for the taking of Murray cod in Victoria and NSW, despite most Victorian freshwater anglers preferring uniform regulations. From December, Victorian Murray Cod will have a legal minumum size of 50cm while their northern counterparts must be 60cm. A maximum size limit of 70cm for Victoria and 80cm for NSW will also apply. A reduced bag limit of one fish from Victorian rivers will also be enforced – however the bag limit of two fish in lakes will remain. The regulations where
changed as it’s believed the previous 60cm to 100cm slot limit did not sufficiently protect the older, more valuable breeding Murray cod. Victorian fisheries hope the new 50cm to 70cm slot limit
will improve sustainability outcomes by 68 per cent, increase the number of large breeding fish by 147 per cent and increase the availability of fish to catch by 12 per cent.
The new Victorian regulations will be introduced for the opening of the Murray cod season on December 1. For more information visit www.depi.vic.gov.au/ murraycodslots

O, busy term four is upon us, won’t be long now until the calendar fills with end of year events and “we must catch up before Christmas”. It already looks like there are many weeks with more than a few nights out. Time then to unleash a secret weapon of feeding the troops in jam-packed weeks, welcome to the cult of the pelmini. Pelmeni– essentially they are Russian dumplings. Handcrafted by a family in Melbourne they are adaptable – you can treat them like tortellini or ravioli and serve them with a pasta-type sauce. Alternatively treat them like Asian dumplings by finishing them off with a pan fry. You can make a great mid-week meal by serving pelmeni this way with some steamed bok choy. The traditional Russian way is to cook the dumplings and then serve them with sour cream as a dipping sauce. Pelmeni come in a variety of flavours, you can serve them mixed or just stick to one flavour.
QUICK AND DELICIOUS: Pelmeni.
Ricotta is a great one if you have a house of pasta lovers. The pork or chicken great for Asian style. The potato I don’t rave about as much. The other great use of pelmeni at this time of year – a fabulous party food if you serve them individually on some fancy picks. There is a great range of picks at Strath Variety which will make your catering look really professional. So, you’re probably thinking this sounds good, but really why is she raving so much? The secret weapon of Pelmeni– they are cooked from frozen. Think about it. A busy term four,
all you need to do is have a variety of pelmeniin the freezer. Combine that with a quickly thrown together pasta sauce or some Asian sauces and you will have dinner on the table in just a little bit longer than it takes to boil the pot of water. Being more dumpling size they also seem to be easily handled by children meaning a quick dinner if you need to be out the door to a concert or sports final. And the best bit, they taste delicious. Locally pelmeni are available at Bendigo Wholefoods.

Pastry is one of the most rewarding things to make. You can’t beat a nice crunchy and flakey tart or pie lid. Making it yourself is easy, cheap and so much better than any store bought pastry. Here is a simple pastry recipe to try. You can find suet at your local butcher, its basically white, creamy beef fat. There are vegetarian alternatives available. Ingredients: 200g self raising flour 100g suet
120ml ice cold water Pinch of salt Egg yolk Method: In a food processor blend the flour, salt and suet until it looks like breadcrumbs. Add the water and pulse a couple of times until it comes together. Tip out onto your bench and gently mix together to make a dough. Don’t over work it. You just want it to come together and form a ball. Let it rest in the fridge for one hour before using. Roll the dough about
2mm thick on a floured surface. It needs to be large enough to cover your pie dish. Brush the edges of the pastry with egg yolk so you can press it to the sides of the dish. Finally brush the top with egg yolk and sprinkle a little more salt on top. Rest in the fridge again before baking. Bake in a moderate oven until the pastry is golden brown and really crunchy. It does take a little longer to cook than other pastry, so don’t be afraid to leave it in the oven for a while for the pastry to really crisp.

Chris Wilson heads festival line-up A
USTRALIAN Blues legend Chris Wilson is coming to Bendigo as part of this year’s Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival. The multi-instrumentalist – who has been a part of some of Australia’s favourite blues rock acts, including Harem Scarem and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls – will be playing alongside more than 100 other artists from November 6 to 9. This year’s festival line-up boasts dozens of fresh acts, many who have never played in Bendigo before. The soulful and seductive Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson will be showing off their unique rootsy sound, which earned them Blues Album of the Year at the Australian Chain Awards. Lachy Doley, dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ, will also be making his festival debut with the Lachy Doley Group, after years working with acts such as Bernard Fanning, The Beautiful Girls and Powderfinger. Other festival debutantes include Australia’s Got Talent alumni Owen Campbell, dance floor starters The
Continental Blues Party and bluegrass four-piece Green Mohair Suits. Of course there will be plenty of old and new favourites coming along for the ride too. Recent finalist on The Voice John Lingard will be flying the flag for Bendigo singer songwriters with a performance at the Old Church on the Hill. South Australian blues duo Sweet Baby James and Rob Eyers’ delicate finger picking, growling slide guitar and sparse country blues are also sure to win the pair plenty of new fans. Festival favourites Archer & The Long Gone Daddies, Josh Owen and Carus Thompson with be joined by blues heavyweights Geoff Achison, Claude Hay and Jojo Smith. Plus 2014 will herald the return of some of last year’s most popular acts, including Lily and King, Pete Cornelius and Genevieve Chadwick. Festival Director Colin Thompson said this year’s festival was shaping up to be the best yet. “Not only do we have heaps of new acts performing this year but we
also have some really exciting new events,” Mr Thompson said. “What I’m really excited about is the final of the inaugural Lazenby Young Blues Guitarist Award, where one lucky muso will be taking home a Fender USA Standard Stratocaster in memory of our dear friend Phil Lazenby. “This will be held at our annual free family concert in the Civic Gardens on Saturday, November 8. “We also have a number of new venues on board this year, including some special events at Star Cinema, Rocks on Rosalind, Bendigo Bank Theatre and Tap House, details of which we will be releasing very soon. “All this is on top of our unique Blues Tram (which will be running all weekend), artist workshops, and hundreds of live shows at 30 of Bendigo’s finest venues. “A full line-up will be published on the BB&RMF website in coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.” Find out more at www.bendigobluesandroots.com.au

LL aboard for the latest from the Blues Tram. Genevieve Chadwick (right) offers a very special ride this Sunday at 2pm until 4.15pm, on board too will be Urban Creatures. The Blues Tram is well and truly in the mix of Bendigo music now, and acts as a pointer to the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival next month as well as being a standalone act in its own right. Festival organiser Colin Thompson is part of Urban Creatures but has plenty to say about Chadwick. “Imagine if Janis Joplin and John Lee Hooker had a baby together; musically, this girl would be the offspring of that union,” he said. “On stage, she inevitably lives up to her reputation for giving her all, she looks like an angel, roars like a lion and plays guitar like a demon.” The tram leaves from the Central Deborah mine, tickets from www.bendigotourism.com

Jamie’s wife Belinda comes into the office on a regular basis and does the books, and his two boys love to come into see Dad after school and see the men at work. “I’m building up a long term family business,” Jamie said. “I’d love it if my sons come in here when they finish school.” Jamie also wants to emphasise that his prices are competitive. “We always give realistic quotes so when our customers get their bills there are no surprises.” The easiest way to find Jamie Hackett Motors is to follow the road behind Fitzpatricks Hardware in Eaglehawk Road and you’ll quickly find his business in Wood street. Harrower decision looms STAR Bendigo Spirit point guard Kristi Harrower will not play in this weekend’s WNBL Spring Shield, but could still play a part in the Spirit’s chase for three consecutive titles. The 39-year-old indicated this week that she would make a decision on her playing future by mid next week. Harrower will sit out this weekend’s Spring Shield, held at the Bendigo Stadium from today through until Sunday, along with the injured Kelly Wilson. Spirit coach Bernie Harrower said the club hopes to secure the services of the star point guard, as it aims for a third successive WNBL title. “She won’t be playing, and she will make decisions, probably around the middle of next week, about what she wants to do,” Harrower said. “We will then be able to set about structuring our team to suit. It will be an interesting scenario in that if she does play, we could quite obviously

be stronger than we were last year. “It is something that we certainly want to try and achieve, and we want
to stay ahead of the pack. When you are winning championships, you have a small window of opportunity to get that done and we are pretty hopeful that window hasn’t closed yet.” Spirit trio Belinda Snell, Tessa Lavey and Gabrielle Richards arrived back in Australia this week after winning bronze medals with the Australian Opals at the FIBA World Championships for Women in Turkey. Harrower said on Wednesday he was not sure if any of the Opals representatives would play in the Spirit’s three contests. “The last thing we want to do is throw players in that have been travelling and need a rest. “We hope that they will be able to get on the court, but there are no guarantees at this stage, and we will make decisions according to how those girls are feeling.” With Wilson out for at least another three weeks, the opportunity is there for the likes of Sara Blicavs,
Maddie Garrick and Heather Oliver to press for expanded roles through the early weeks of the season. Improvement and development from the Spirit’s young players is Harrower’s focus for the weekend, before the Spirit opens its season against Townsville next Saturday. “I think the big thing this weekend for me is being able to see improvement from our younger players,” Harrower said. “Sara and Maddie both had exceptional SEABL seasons and have showed a heap of promise with us in their time here and Heather at training has been great. Bendigo’s pre-season campaign gets under way against Adelaide at 7.30pm tonight, before taking on Sydney tomorrow at 7pm. Tickets for the WNBL’s Spring Shield are available through the Bendigo Stadium. See Sara Blicavs on this week’s Spirit TV EXCLUSIVELY at www.bendigoweekly.com.au
Chairman calls for volunteers to aid Spirit AS the Australian Pork Bendigo Spirit embarks on the 2014-15 Womens National Basketball League season, the club is calling on volunteers to help out in gameday roles throughout the upcoming campaign. Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said this week that there are a number of ways people can help the club in its quest for a trifecta of WNBL titles.
“Board member Ashley Donaldson, who has been involved with basketball in Bendigo for many years, is the co-ordinator for that this year,” Bickley said. “There are a variety of ways that people can be involved on game day. We are looking for people to sell tickets, sell membership and man the entrance to the stadium.
“The volunteers really are the lifeblood of any team, and this is a great opportunity to be involved with, and be a big part of, the Spirit.” The league’s pre-season tournament is being held at the Bendigo Stadium this weekend, before the team’s first home game in two weeks‘ time. “Contributions ranging from
a few hours a week on gameday through to selling memberships on a regular basis would be greatly appreciated,” Bickley said. “We would welcome the contribution of anyone who is willing to be involved.” Anyone interested in getting involved with the Spirit can contact the club’s administration on 5434 2414.
Opals take a bronze W From Page 36 The Opals’ defence, which has been a point of emphasis for coach Brendan Joyce, was at its stifling best, holding Turkey scoreless while opening a 17-0 lead to start the contest. From there the Australians were never headed, Marianna Tolo and Penny Taylor leading the way to victory. Marianna Tolo continued her stellar form, pouring in 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and adding six rebounds. Cayla Francis provided a boost off the bench in the Opals frontcourt dropping 11 points, while Taylor once again did it all tallying 13 points, five rebounds, nine assists and two steals Joyce said the win was his proudest moment in his coaching career. “This is my proudest moment as a coach,” Joyce said. “To win bronze against Turkey in Turkey is a brilliant achievement and a credit to the team.
“What can you say about the ladies – just awesome. It was tremendous effort, focus, defence and spirit in this game and throughout the tournament.” One of the team’s leaders, Erin Phillips, reinforced to Lavey after the match how special winning the medal was. “It is the way we play that is inspiring, how we are together and how we go about our business,” she said. “I said to Tess Lavey after the game ‘this is one medal of many more that I hope to win with you’. She did a fantastic job and is one of the young players that is coming through this fantastic program.” Joyce highlighted the unity among his group as one of the driving factors in the success they achieved in Turkey, as well as in the bronze medal game. “We are truly a team,” Joyce said. “The unity in this team is just amazing and you combine it with the skill package, and how we want to play offensively and defensively, but that result was be-

Richards, a two-time WNBL all-star, and Lavey both only featured sparingly in the Opals’ final contest, with Richards playing in five games throughout the championships and Lavey hitting the floor in six games.
UPGRADE: The Harry Trott Oval will receive $100,000.
Plus for netball SOUTH Bendigo Football Netball Club will receive a $100,000 boost to upgrade their netball courts today. Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum will announce the funding this morning at the Harry Trott Oval in Kennington. Mr Drum said funding was from the Community Facility Funding Program and did not forget women’s sport in the club’s move to the oval. “With the club set to move from Queen Elizabeth Oval to Harry Trott Oval, our investment not only brings the netball facilities up to standard for South Bendigo’s use, but also provides upgraded facilities for use by the community and school groups,” he said. The reserve’s existing three courts will be upgraded and lighting will be installed on two of the courts. “The new courts will open up the reserve to more netball training and competition, providing a boost for club and local competition netball, especially for the growing numbers of juniors keen to join in the fun,” he said. “We’re proud to invest in projects like this that help regional clubs build quality local infrastructure or replace outdated venues, particularly when it comes to improving participation in female sport.” Greater Bendigo council gave $215,000 to the project and local community donated $35,000. “More than $135 million of this $138 million investment has been for facilities used by female clubs, teams and participants, illustrating this government’s term-long focus on female sport,” Mr Drum said.

Rangas take on Marong to start W From Page 36 At Marong Links Oval, Marong opens its season against Mandurang, who are shaping up to be contenders once more this season. The Rangas have not named any outs, while bringing in recruits James Pietromonaco, Will Hill, and Maiden Gully quartet Mark Roberts, Paul Martin and Greg and James Bailey. Marong have added Scott McLarty, Ash Hemming, Brandon Williamson and Nathan Matthews, while Nathan Nikolic and Darren Tonkin are the outs for the Panthers, who finished narrowly outside the finals fifth last year. Another of the big improvers from last season in Golden Gully have also landed a prized recruit, with former Bendigo District Cricket Association representative Matt Kile joining the club. Kile comes to the Cobras to cover the loss of Brendon Lummis, who headed to BDCA club Huntly North Epsom, and Phil Moore. Gun pace bowler Cam Moore is also expected to spend some time on the

sidelines due to injury. The Cobras take on fellow 2013/14 finalist West Bendigo at Ken Wust Oval in round one. Along with losing Dwyer to Sedgwick, Shaun Stone, Ollie Maher and Lukas Carey have been named as outs by the club, who play three of last year’s top five sides to start the season. Finally, last year’s two bottom sides will look to get an early win on the board, when Maiden Gully hosts Axe Creek. Along with losing four players to Mandurang, Maiden Gully has also lost Mitch Cutter-Rabl. David Becker, Steven Hollingsworth, Leon Reidy and Leigh Draper have all
come to the Gully to build on a disappointing 2013-14 campaign. Axe Creek have only named one out in Travis Nolan, who was the club’s best player last season, leading the Cowboys in runs scored (348), and wickets taken (22). The club has recruited Brannon Stanford and Jordan Knight from Sedgwick, as well bringing Grant LePoidven, Greg Burns, Damien Webb and Joel Bish to Champions IGA Oval. Division one and two matches get under way at 1pm on Saturday, with division three kicking off next weekend and the EVCA division four competition beginning on November 2.

A REMATCH of last year’s grand final between Emu Creek and United headlines a bumper opening round of the Emu Valley Cricket Association season, which gets under way on Saturday. The Emus, led by Daniel Chamberlain again in 2014-15, will be after revenge against United when the two sides meet at Ewing Park. United’s depth will be tested, with key players in Rod Smythe, Tim Elliott and Luke Kairn listed as outs, and star allrounder Alex Collins as well as Jacob Piccoli facing stints on the sideline due to injury. The Tigers have picked up Brandon Worner, as well as Sam and Justin Williams. Emu Creek have no confirmed outs, but have added Brendan Morris, Nick Hobbs,
Callum Cross, David Ruby Matthew Brown, as well as former players Adam Stanfield, Nathan Jenkins. One of last year’s big improvers, Sedgwick, made a big splash in recruiting, landing star West Bendigo batsman Matt Dwyer. New coach Rick Ladson was able to lure Dwyer, who made 479 runs at an average of 47.9 last season, and the Rams can expect more arrivals before Christmas. Sedgwick take on Spring Gully at Club Court to open their season, with former Bendigo United player Alex Sutton joining the Crows for the 14-15 campaign. Importantly for Gully, the club has no confirmed outs as it heads into the season under playing coach Andrew Sharpe. Continued Page 35
