CENTRAL Victoria has been inundated with promises of political cash for major projects across the region by the main parties as the countdown continues to the November 29 state election. THE SPOTLIGHT has been shone on the city’s most prestigious theatre. Framed in red brick and bluestone, the entrance to the 1000seat theatre unveils a secret within the heart of the city. The former gaol has been woven into Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre with joinery seamlessly blending our history and progress. The Pentonville-style prison, has been reinvented with three wing entrances opened and extended. “Built off a blueprint in the 1850s, the idea was to have a central hall and off that five wings,” Capital events manager David Lloyd said. “There were only two cell wings built into the prison here with a provision for five.” Lloyd said the newly constructed adjoining building, which includes school cafe and classrooms, replicates the traditional cell wings. Council has refurbished and restored the Sandhurst and Marong wings and opened the entrance ways to three proposed wings. “We have given life to our heritage buildings. Three openings were bricked in and closed, we have opened up the wings,” council city futures director Stan Liacos said.

Patrons will be able to buy tickets, cloak their jackets and buy food from the transformed cells, while looking at the restored prisoner cells. Walking along the entrance wing, patrons will be led to the central hall to gaze down at the glassed staircase running below the wing. The grand foyer leads patrons to the drama, dance and music classrooms, open spaces, lifts, amenities, dressing rooms and commercial kitchen learning spaces. Mr Lloyd said it was inevitable students would be inspired and encouraged to continue with their art or hospitality skill sets. The prison’s fortress walls line the building’s edge with a grand staircase to the theatre joining the brickwork. Soon to be polished in neutral hues, Mr Lloyd said it was a deliberate manoeuvre to retain an industrial chic look throughout the gathering space. “We will have screens showing various elements and the intention over time is to have artworks in here as well,” he said. Patrons will be able to relax in the Colombian seats, wrapped in three shades of red to reflect the brickwork. A grand view from the balcony showcases the former prison, the uncovered entrance ways and the untold buildings history.

St John of God to grow By CHRISTINE McGINN

ST JOHN of God is breathing new life into the Lily Street campus, with a multi-million redevelopment set to rise. Stage one, costing $40.9 million, has been given the green light with Greater Bendigo council approving the works. Under stage one, a three-storey building will be created with only the top two floors fitted out as wards. The first floor will house 28 additional beds, with a rehabilitation ward and gym on the second floor. Two new theatres will be built in the existing theatre with the current hospital to be fully refurbished. The new building will project out over Lily Street on the upper floor levels, with ground floor access. The $9m stage two works will house 28 additional patient beds on the ground floor with another planning application required. A three-level glazed hallway between the current and new building will link the facilities.

About 5000 more patients are expected to be treated at the hospital with an additional 10 theatre sessions available. Chief executive officer Darren Rogers said the redevelopment would attract more specialists, enabling patients to be treated closer to home. “We have a number of patients who go to Melbourne for treatment but with our increased capacity through the theatres,we will be able to give our surgeons more operating lists,” he said. “This is about the private mode of care. We are currently limiting specialists’ private practice because we don’t have enough surgical lists. “We will see a huge amount of patients coming through to be treated.” Under the plans, the hospital’s front entrance would be updated, an ambulance bay, a new lift and stair access to the hospital and carparking from Lily Street. The existing carpark will be formalised with pedestrian paths and landscaping to increase parking with 50 extra

spaces. Through the development sub-acute and palliative care rooms would be introduced to care for patients locally. The hospital revealed its plans for the two-stage development last December.

Planning and development director Prue Mansfield said the four storey redevelopment was necessary to meet local health care demands. “The confidence in our cty that a private provider of medical services would be prepared to invest,

Mobile network set for faster speeds BENDIGO residents switched onto Australia’s fastest mobile network with Telstra’s launch of 4GX yesterday. The city is one of 27 locations across the country to receive the service before the national rollout early next year. Telstra’s new service, 4GX, will connect users to higher speeds and extra 4G coverage across the city’s growth corridor. 4GX is based on Telstra’s new 700MHz spectrum and delivers higher typical mobile speeds on compatible devices. Telstra country wide area general manager for northern Victoria and Sunraysia Steve Tinker said the service increased connectivity. “Our customers in Bendigo are relying on mobile connectivity more than ever. The explosion in applications, shift towards mobile video consumption and use of mobile in commerce means demand for connectivity continues to grow strongly,” he said. “The 4GX network will give the local area the capacity to better handle influxes of visitors and improve the mobile experience during busy times. “We’re staying ahead of this demand by introducing 4GX to boost network capacity. This will

allow us to continue to offer our customers Australia’s most reliable mobile service that’s faster in more places.” The CBD, North Bendigo, Eaglehawk and White Hills will be some of the first local areas to test out the new service. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said it was great news for Bendigo and for those with compatible smartphones. “We are in a telecommunications crisis and it is great to see Telstra help reduce the issues,” she said. “So many people want to be able to connect and the compounding factors including infrastructure have made it hard. “This is great for people in the CBD and around the hospital to have a fast speed mobile service. But we need to keep advocating for the rest of Bendigo to have access to a good service. “It seems East and West Bendigo are divided on telecommunications services. “This will encourage more people to come to Bendigo to connect and become engaged. We might all want to upgrade our phones.” Mr Tinker said they would continue to roll out the newer service in the new year to areas in

up to $60 in this city is just another sign of the growth and maturity of Bendigo,” she said. Mr Rogers said he was very confident stage one of the project would be completed by the end of 2016.

AFTER almost a decade heading up The Bendigo Trust, both the trust chief executive, Tom Seddon and former chairman Lloyd Cameron will farewell the organisation at the general meeting to be held tonight at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre. The Bendigo Trust which has been in existence for 43 years provides employment to 87 staff and manages some of Bendigo’s key heritage assets including the Bendigo Tramways, Central Deborah Gold Mine, Discovery Science and Technology Centre and the Bendigo Joss House Temple. Mr Seddon said it had been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Mr Cameron during his time at the Trust, as he has always been a great mentor to me and supporter of all the Trust staff. During the pair’s tenure, The Bendigo Trust made great strides in moving each of its sites forward and ensuring they are run professionally, with particular attention being paid to good corporate governance and regulatory compliance. “Tom has shown great commitment to his role as CEO and has worked tirelessly to make improvements to each of the sites, particularly through seeking grant funding,” new chairman David Wright said. “During his time with the trust Tom has procured a staggering $4.5m worth of grant funding and sponsorship, on top of council support, to help make innumerable upgrades,” Mr Wright said. Mr Seddon is handing over the reins to Ian Hart, previously CEO of the Bendigo Jockey Club, who will start his employment with Bendigo Trust on December 17.

Ready for Christmas BENDIGO Health will receive an early Christmas present, and likely its biggest ever, with the structure of the new Bendigo Hospital expected to be finished before December 25. In its latest construction update released this week, Exemplar Health said the slab for the seventh floor of the hospital is being poured and the lower floors are being transformed by the installation of walls and services. More than 61,800

square meters of concrete have been poured so far and there is just over 10 per cent left to go in the overall structure. The west building is almost complete and around one and a half floors remain on the east building. With scaffolding being removed from the internal street, the foyer area of the new hospital with its angular internal flyovers between upper floors is now obvious, and from Mercy Street it’s possible to see through to Drought St.

On the exterior the installation of the 1200 precast façade panels is well under way with 219 already in place. Unlike a lot of the work now under way inside the hospital this is clearly visible to passers-by. Within the structure, the scaffolding has been stripped up to level two. On the ground floor the internal corridors and rooms in the future emergency department are increasingly evident. The recessed areas for baths and showers have

been revealed and frames for stud walls are being installed. The first plasterboard has also been installed. Along the roof the myriad of pipes and trays required for services such as IT and oxygen are being fitted. From Mercy St the specially constructed steel columns that support the level three slab has also been installed. Exemplar Health says the childcare centre in Yarrington House has been completed and is now operating.

Pro-lifers target Labor

By DIANNE DEMPSEY

ALONG with several other Labor Party candidates who supported the 2008 Abortion Law Reform Act, member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan has again been targeted by the Right to Life Australia organisation. Leaflets authorised by Right to Life Australia have been dropped into letter boxes in Ms Allan’s electorate. The inflammatory leaflets claim amongst other things, that the Abortion Law Reform Act allows abortion up to birth. Liberal candidate for Bendigo East, Greg Bickley, said he knew nothing about the leaflets and had not seen one. “I’ve only seen a copy of one.” Greens supporter Nathan Wingrave said when he received the Right to Life leaflet it was carefully folded inside the Liberal Party leaflet. “I didn’t see who delivered

the leaflet but the way the Right to Life leaflet was folded inside, it would have been impossible to be an accident,” he said. Mr Bickley denied that his party was involved with the distribution of the leaflets. He also said that he was standing out of it (the abortion issue) and did not want to make any comment. He concurred however that he supported Premier Denis Napthine position who has said there would be no changes to the abortion laws. “In the 2010 election Michael Langdon ran away from the issue,” Ms Allan said. “And now Mr Bickley is doing the same thing. It’s clear that he wants to conceal his position. “I think it is a sign of weakness if you can’t stand up for what you believe in as an individual. “If you can’t stand up for you believe in as an individual, you can’t stand up for the people in your electorate.”

“I have been the subject of some very nasty campaigns. One year my staff even opened a parcel which contained the foetus of a kangaroo. “But I stand up for what I believe in. People in my electorate know my position (on abortion) and they still vote for me.”

are pro-life. “We go by their voting record. Abortion laws in Victoria have gone too far,” she said. “We don’t have control over everyone but we do what we can such as place authorised advertisements, drop leaflets in electorates, go to public meetings, picket

If some pro-life people have extreme actions it’s because a raw nerve has been hit. Based on a Victorian Law Reform Commission report recommending the removal of abortion from the Victorian Crimes Act, all political parties allowed members of parliament to have a conscience vote, and in October 2008 the bill was passed by both houses. Katrina Haller, executive officer from Right to Life Australia said they help elect people who

abortion clinics and hand out how to vote cards. “Under no circumstances should abortion occur. “If some pro-life people have extreme actions it’s because a raw nerve has been hit. Abortion is a violent invasion. “We don’t approve of death threats but we understand that people can be extreme in their actions.”

“Abortion clinics don’t provide counselling because if abortions don’t take place the staff don’t get paid. Women don’t get advice from an abortion clinic because of invested interests in those clinics.“ “In more than 30 years of providing medical care to women and families I have never seen anyone make a decision to have an abortion lightly,” Regina Clark, a medical practitioner said. “An unplanned pregnancy is a time of evaluating your life, plans for the future for yourself, the potential child and any already existing family. “Rarely is the decision easy. Most women will talk to friends, family, partner, GP or other health professional in coming to a decision. “Groups picketing clinics providing abortions just add an extra layer of stress to an already difficult time for women seeking the health care they need,” she said.

ABC fans voice cuts concern BENDIGO came out in force yesterday to protest cuts to Australia’s independent broadcaster ABC. Locals protested in Hargreaves Mall at 12.30pm as part of the week-long national Our Stories Our Future Our ABC campaign. Crowds were drawn to the rally to raise awareness of the broadcast institution and celebrate its diversity and importance in the community. “Let’s be clear, the cuts proposed undermine the ABC’s obligations under its charter. They mean a loss of Australian voices, of Australian stories, of Australian performances,” Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance federal secretary Chris-

topher Warren said. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said the ABC was integral to the fabric of Australian media. “The ABC is not there to be a puppet of the government of the day, they provide impartial news and are there to serve us all,” she said. “We are about to embark on the fire season and we need our emergency broadcaster. I believe the cuts will especially impact negatively on regional areas.” The joint initiative between the Community and Public Sector Union and the MEAA is part of a series of protests running until November 25.

ASPIRE Cultural and Charitable Foundation has been given a Labor blessing to aid in the development of Australia’s first multi-faith precinct. Members for Bendigo East and West, Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards have promised $5 million towards the $15m multi-faith precinct if re-elected on November 29. Ms Allan said the facilitywould build on Bendigo’s reputation as a cultural and artistic centre. “The vision for this site to turn this area into a civic precinct to rival those in European cities, and Australia’s first interfaith museum is too good an opportunity for our city to pass up,” she said. “It will provide a new civic and meeting space for the community to come together and importantly, it will celebrate our rich multicultural city and our past, with an eye to the future. “ASPIRE is made up of people from all faiths and all walks of life and this is about transforming a public space into a great community asset.” Ms Edwards said Labor supported the $15m development and looked forward to putting Bendigo on the map. ASPIRE chairman Gordon McKern said they had been in talks with Labor and were thrilled with the outcome. “Bendigo is a really great city and this will enhance it dra-

matically. This is something we are proud of ... this will lift the entrance to the city of Greater Bendigo,” he said. “We are not just looking at religious faiths but the faiths of the people who came here in the goldrush days and who had enough faith to stay around and build a great city.”

It will provide a new civic and meeting space About 50 jobs will be created in the construction while 39 will continue following the development. Monsignor Frank Marriott said the ASPIRE precinct celebrated the faith of the people who built our great city. “We would like to try and put something very visible in front of our younger generations and the older generations to remind us that people can do those sorts of things,” he said. The city’s first inter-faith council will also form next month, complementing the Faiths on the Goldfields Interactive centre.

STATE ELECTION 2014

Liberals move to fund school By CHRISTINE MCGINN

EPSOM Primary School will be given a $5.7 million modernisation boost under a Liberal government promise. Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley has committed funding to the school for revitalised teaching spaces. “This $5.7 million election commitment will significantly modernise and rebuild parts of the school to cater for its recent growth in enrolments, delivering 21st century teaching and learning facilities to support its almost 200-strong, and growing, student body,” Mr Bickley said.

“The Napthine Coalition Government is delivering a $1.1 billion investment in school infrastructure, including 24 new schools in growth areas, and upgrades to hundreds of existing schools across Victoria, including right here in Bendigo East.” Education Minister Martin Dixon visited the school on Tuesday and fired shots at Labor’s 11 years of schools repair neglect. “While Labor cut maintenance funding by 20 per cent, we have increased direct school maintenance funding by more than 40 per cent to tackle Labor’s under-investment in key growth areas, like Bendigo East,” Mr Dixon said.

For those without a voice

Mr Bickley said the state Government had delivered about $6m in Bendigo East since 2011. “Epsom Primary School is a popular, growing school, but Labor in its 11 years of government did not invest a single dollar in the school,” Mr Bickley said. Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the Liberals had only acted on the eve of an election campaign to bolster their own interests. “Five years ago there were only 80 students at Epsom Primary School and now there are more than 200,” she said. “The school has been

After missing out in the 2010 State Election, Mr Byron said he was running to stop Northern Victoria’s suffering under the Liberal Government. “At a time when Victoria is facing an unprecedented unemployment crisis, we cannot afford a government that will cut funding to the TAFE sector,” Mr Byron said. “A sector which is so central to the development of those crucial jobs we will need into the future.” Mr Byron accompanied La Trobe University’s Vicechancellor John Dewar last week on a trip to Bendigo, which included meetings with Labor politicians. FRESH-FACED and bursting with energy, Lola Currie is stepping into the political ring to give voice to those without. Animal Justice Party Northern Victoria Upper House’s first candidate, Ms Currie is fighting to ensure animals‘ welfare. “It is very exciting, it’s all new but I think we will make a difference. It is only our second election. Last year we had 200 members and this year we have 1000, so we are growing rapidly,” the 21-year-old said. “I want to make an impact regarding animal welfare issues. I don’t believe this avenue has been used before. “I think everyone needs to start somewhere, this is my passion and you are never too young.” Ms Currie said the laws governing society needed to protect animal welfare. “We want to ban jumps racing because at the moment 127 horses have already died on Australian racing tracks. We and South Australia are the only ones who have not banned this,” the region campaign coordinator said. “We want to ban duck shooting, puppy farms and the breed specific legislation. In Victoria it allows innocent dogs to be killed by the way they look.” Despite concerns about a one-trick pony party, Ms Currie says there is more than meets the eye. “I don’t think we are a single-policy party. I just believe we come from an animal-centric policy, meaning all our policies are centred around animals,” the nursing student said. “We are asking voters to vote for animals because they don’t have a voice in our system.”

said young and old felt “let down by this government”. “We cannot afford a government that will continue the war against our hard working paramedics, a government that will cut support services within our schools and indeed build a dud tunnel in the middle of Melbourne,” the 27-year old Sunbury candidate said. “Mr Napthine has used the word trust a lot since this campaign started. But why should families across Northern Victoria trust him when he has let Victoria sit idle for the last four years? “Only an Andrews Labor Government will get Victoria working again.” Bendigo West Rise Up Australia candidate Sandra Caddy has also dipped her hat into the political arena. “I want to ensure our freedom of speech, conscience and religion are not further eroded,” she said. “Rise Up stands independent of the influences from big business and unions. STATE ELECTION 2014

SUIT PACKAGES For Hire

By CHRISTINE MCGINN From

AMBULANCE officers and Liberal candidates are engaged in a stand-off after an alleged refusal to discuss local issues. Local paramedic Brett Adie said Bendigo’s Liberal party candidates had refused to meet to discuss the dayto-day issues members are facing. “Our concern is that the false information published by the Health Minister (David Davis) has been accepted by a number of the Liberal members,” he wrote to the candidates. “This has been backed up by paramedics in other areas who have met with their local Liberal members and candidates and have found that they were relying on false information.” Mr Adie said he had been ignored by the local Liberal candidates. “I don’t think the government actually wants to get this sorted at the moment, I think we are stuck. We had no intention of taking it to the election or getting this far,” he said. “The government are the only ones who benefit from

this being delayed.” Ambulance vehicles have been marked with slogans advising locals of the apparent refusal to talk about the situation. Mr Adie said Heathcote, Inglewood and Gisborne units were frequently dispatched to cater to the increasing local demand. “The system has not improved, if anything, gotten worse.” He said another 11 am-

bulance officers were required to adequately cater to the local community’s demand. But Bendigo East Liberal candidate Greg Bickley said he had spoken to local residents about their concerns while door knocking across the electorate in the past months. “I am aware of the issues and sincerely hope for a resolution to this dispute,” he said.

SPORTING CHANCE: Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley has promised $400,000 for a playground and $1.5 million to install traffic lights.

“Mr Adie has been openly hostile and confrontational on a number of occasions to myself and to members of the government on their many visits to Bendigo. “The Coalition Government has delivered Victoria 679 additional paramedics through its record investment – that’s 679 more than when Labor was in government, a fact the union has been totally silent in acknowledging.”

Reserve in line for extra cash EPSOM Huntly Recreation Reserve will be kicking goals if the coalition is re-elected at this month’s state election. Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley has promised $400,000 for a playground and $1.5 million to install traffic lights. “A re-elected Napthine Government will build a playground for local families and install traffic lights at the intersection of the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve and Midland Highway,” Mr Bickley said. “The Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve continues to grow in

popularity with various sporting groups using the facilities. “Families often have some children playing sport, whilst their siblings are too young to participate. It can often be a challenge to keep the younger once occupied, so this playground will be a great asset for the families,’’ Mr Bickley said. “There is a huge volume of traffic using the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve and it is vital that we ensure the safety of visitors.” The State Government opened the $3.2 million pavilion in 2012 with $100,000 for new lighting in 2013.

TALENT: The students on stage at The Capital.

Going to the ball Months of hard work came to fruition for more than 100 Bendigo South East Secondary College students and staff this week, with the debut of their production of Cinderella on Wednesday. A massive group of students, from years 7-10, took to the stage at the Capital Theatre to perform the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. The cast performed three shows: a matinee for students of local primary schools on Wednesday, before shows for big audiences on both Wednesday and Thursday nights. BSE drama teacher EllenKate Waayers said the group’s hard work was reflected in the quality of the production. “We have a group of really talented students that have put

in a huge amount of work to make this happen,” she said. “Along with the cast we have a lot of staff and students in the band, we actually have the biggest contingent of music students ever. “This is about the fifth year we have had a production, and it is something that I think the whole school, and definitely the people involved, really look forward to.” The students have rehearsed at least once a week for around three months leading up to the production. “The talent some of the students have is awesome, and it really teaches them about working in teams and goes a long way for their confidence in getting up on stage, too,” Waayers said.

WINNERS: Photographer Andrew Perryman scored three awards with journalists Dianne Dempsey and Christine McGinn sharing the reporting prize.

Weekly continues winning streak THE Bendigo Weekly news team has again dominated the prestigious Victorian Country Press Awards held last Friday night at Lancefield. Photographer Andrew Perryman won awards in the circulation over 10,000 category for Best Photographic Study, Best Sports Photograph and Best News Photograph. Journalist Dianne Dempsey featured in a tie in the APS Award

for Local Reporting for her ‘The Fallen Girls’ series of articles on the lasting pain of child abuse endured at the former St Aiden’s Orphanage. The Weekly’s Christine McGinn and Anthony Radford were named as co-winners of the same award for their ground breaking coverage of plans for Bendigo’s first mosque. The Bendigo Weekly was also

runner up in the Australia Post Awards for Journalism, and was highly commended in the Overall Newspaper Excellence category. General manager Peter Kennedy congratulated all staff on their outstanding work, and said the awards were a fitting tribute to the work done week in and out by some of the best journalists in regional Australia.

City bottom of the burglary list

By CHRISTINE McGINN

BENDIGO is one of the state’s least burgled cities in regional Victoria, according to recent RACV data. Figures show only one in every 130 Bendigo (postcode 3550) homes was burgled last year, making it much safer than the state’s average of one in every 73 homes. Bendigo’s position as a safe city dropped slightly from 2013 when one in 142 homes was burgled. But locals living in Eaglehawk

double their chances of being burgled with one in every 60 homes under fire this year. Warrnambool was the next best with only one in 102 homes burgled, closely followed by Horsham at one in 95 homes. Geelong remained above the state average at one in 83 homes, with Mildura about 3.5 times riskier than Bendigo. Rival city Ballarat was one of the top 40 riskiest locations in the state, with one in 48 homes burgled.

Shepparton was hot on its heels with one in 44 homes being burgled this year according to the data.

We have stressed the importance for residents on rural properties to keep an eye on each other RACV advises people to install a home alarm, lock all windows and doors to increase home security and reduce thefts. Locals are warned that hiding a

Bendigo Police Senior Sergeant John Dalton said officers had been working with members of the community to reduce burglaries. “We have pushed to members of

the community to lock up and secure their houses particularly when they are away on holidays or out for the day at work,” he said. “We have stressed the importance for residents on rural properties to keep an eye on each other and to report any suspicious behaviour to police. “The crime prevention team are advising people how to secure their homes and our detectives have done a wonderful job apprehending offenders.”

Hall work adds to school AN innovative and investigative approach to learning has a new home at St Liborius Primary School. The three-stage development will bring the school’s facilities in-line with its contemporary teaching, using the Walker Learning Approach. Under the $1.2 million stage one redevelopment, the parish hall will be restored to its former glory with an interactive learning centre, shared spaces and amenities. An extension connecting the parish hall to the school building is also expected to be finished by mid-May next year. Principal Frank Dullard said the parish hall was built in 1904 by the Keogh brothers who designed and erected it. “At the moment we only have funding for stage one and we apply for funding each year for the remainder,” he said. “The parish hall was a school building until 1913 and has been used by school and parish ever since. “The hall will be brought back to its original form, any add-ons will be taken off. The ceiling will be reinstated to a press ceiling. “We have been looking at it to see how it could suit the needs of modern learning. “It will have explicit teaching areas, it will have an open area to cater to all classes to come out and do investigations.” Mr Dullard said the school had put in a bid for stage two funding, to refurbish the school and its tiring amenities. “We have been seeking funding for a number of years. have finally been successful with stage one and we are hoping it flows onto stage two and three. It’s about putting in application in and being assessed on its merit,” Mr Dullard said. “For us, it’s almost time. The school is over 100 years old and its need in need of works and upgrade and to bring it up to current thinking and learning. “Part of our journey has been to adapt current learning areas to current learning practices. This has meant modifying, it hasn’t been ideal but an exciting way to go about it.

Mr Dullard said E+ Architecture had been instrumental in the design and paid tribute to the school’s history. “This will cater for a long-way into the future,” he said.

ADORNED in yellow and maroon silks, the relics of Dalai Lamas and Buddhas rest in our great city. Pearls and small-circular stones left behind in the ashes of some of Buddhism’s holiest members, lay at The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion. The donated artefacts in the gallery showcase the strength of the faith and the lineage of people reaching Nirvana. “This room has been designed to hold the relics of the Buddha and various other Buddha saints,” Canadian Nun Joan said. “The Buddha in the middle is the Maitreya Buddha who is the Buddha of love and he represents the future teachings of the religion. “Inside the showcases are the actual relics of the Buddhas. Relics are small and of different types. “After a Buddha saint dies, the ashes are cooled, the cremation oven is opened and they search very diligently through the ashes to see if there are any special signs. “One thing they find, even now, in their ashes are these tiny

The long and winding road RIDE more than 360 kilometres in 24 hours? I was captivated when I got the chance. As our team of five cycled around Bendigo, Avoca and Stawell, I listened intently to stories from the other riders about the iconic Paris-Brest-Paris, Perth-Albany-Perth, Sydney-toMelbourne, London-EdinburghLondon – all running at 1200km to 1400km – and many other rides both here and abroad. I was hooked. First introduced to mountain bike racing and later road racing, it was my introduction to the Audax Australia Cycling Club in 2011 that led to a legacy of long days – and often nights – in the saddle on a country road. Like many fellow Audax cyclists, that introduction was through invitation to be part of a team in the celebrated Fleche Opperman rides.

pearls. These pearls are said to be a display of the qualities that teacher had in their mind when they were alive such as universal love, compassion. “People may realise once their teacher passes that they were a highly realised being who had many special qualities.” Painting the walls in maroon and yellow hues, hand stitching table clothes and curtains, 15 international monks and nuns reinvigorated the former dark space. Organiser Nun Joan led the way to transform the space. The relics will be in the gallery until the Stupa is fully completed. “The person’s spirit is still connected to it, to show their qualities to inspire their disciples,” Nun Joan said. “It is such an incredible phenomena. To find these sparkling pearls in the middle of the ashes is quite an amazing thing to see.” The Jade Buddha has been touring the world and will also rest next to the relics once the Stupa is completed. LONG WAY HOME: Audax rides offer long distance challenges. Photo: BOB McHUGH These 24-hour team time trials take place all over Australia in March to celebrate the achievements of the great Sir Hubert Oppermann. Since that first 360km ride I’ve had the pleasure of joining many other Audax cyclists on rides ranging from 200km to 1200km. Usually unsupported, these rides rely on riders seeking out good bakeries (or anything that is open) for sustenance. Each ride offers the participant something different. It could be the challenge of completing a multi-day ride tempered by lack of sleep and groan-

ing legs. It could be the great company of fellow cyclists, telling stories, joking together or taking turns into a block head wind or driving rain. It may be the stunning scenery of the Great Ocean Road or Alpine region. It may be your sense of adventure that needs massaging. With long days, unpredictable weather and the risk of a “mechanical” with your bike, finding a sheltered spot for a few hours sleep or even overnight is always a possibility. Fellow Audax cyclist, Alan Walker, maintains: “You are not

a real Audax rider until you have slept with your bike on the side of the road”. Maybe it’s the peaceful solitude when you find yourself covering hundreds of kilometres in your own company. Audax may be your road to a new way of thinking about cycling, whether it be a small group ride via a few bakeries or mixing in with an international field in the Bulgarian 1200. When the glamour of sprint finishes and carbon wheels begins to fade it may be time to take the long and winding road. www.audax.org.au - Peter Carr

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, November 21, 2014

A statesman of Bendigo DAWN, October 21, 1944, off Leyte Island in the South Pacific. Nineteen-year-old Warwick Johanson, the pride of his working class Kangaroo Flat family, is at his signalman’s post high and just aft of the bridge on the pride of his nation’s navy, its flagship HMAS Australia. It is part of the US 7th Fleet, heading to support MacArthur’s landings in the Philippines and will confront most of the Japanese navy, concentrated in a last-ditch attempt to prevent the advance of the allies. Soon an attacking Japanese Aichi divebomber is hit by anti-aircraft fire and turns, seemingly deliberately lining up the Australia. Its wing root ploughs into the foremast, ripping it from the deck and sending it toppling forward, before the plane’s fuselage smashes into the bridge spraying fire and oil. The collision and fire will kill seven officers and 23 sailors, and injure 61 more. In an interview six decades later, survivor Johanson describes a “red-letter day” for the Australian Navy; the day its flagship suffers what some describe as the war’s first kamikaze attack. The Australia is to be hit five times more by suicide dive-bombers, limping through the war but proudly flying young Johanson’s flags until its victorious end. That date, October 21, means little to most of us, but it was to define a life surely as well led as by any Bendigonian before him. It was not, though, his birth date. Warwick Niven Johanson was born in Echuca on December 28 1924, son of Violet and Percy, a Kangaroo Flat-born coach-builder who might have chosen a better profession given the ascension of the motor car in the Twenties. With the Great Depression looming, the family moved in search of work, first to Echuca then to Melbourne before coming home to the ‘Flat. Showing an ingenuity inspired by need,

SECONDHAND FURNITURE WAREHOUSE

E x c e ll e n t P r ic e s !

Percy Johanson turned his coach-building skills to the motor age by building a bus that was to become the first vehicle in a soon-tobe-burgeoning Kangaroo Flat Bus Lines business. His straitened upbringing was to define young Warwick’s character – work hard, be frugal, cherish family and friends, be accountable and be thankful. “I had an ideal childhood,” he would always maintain. “I was born into a close, loving family.” His independence and business nous were apparent from a young age. Rabbits were plentiful and a godsend for a young bloke looking for pocket money. Weekend hauls would be hawked around the neighbourhood for a shilling a pair and Warwick fondly recalled an organised rabbit drive that netted 996 victims in one paddock. (Must have been a big paddock.) One of only two ‘Flat Primary boys to go on to high school, Warwick obtained his leaving in 1940, successfully sitting the public service exam before ditching the security of that post at age 17 to join the navy in the early threatening days of World War II. At home on leave one day he met Yvonne Friswell, accepting her dad’s offer of a ride back to Melbourne and his ship. Three days later, “Miss Friswell” received a letter asking if she might attend the pictures with Warwick when next he was ashore. “Mum can’t even recollect dad talking to her for the whole car trip,” recalls son Dennis. Nevertheless, that letter was to spark a romance that culminated in a 67-year marriage that embodied the Christian ideals of love and commitment. Returning from the war, Warwick started a new life at Bendigo’s Ordnance Factory, studying accountancy at night. On graduating, he joined in partnership with Reg Ham to form the antecedent firm of today’s Richmond Sinnott Delahunty. But it was his life beyond the firm that was to define Warwick Johanson in the eyes of two generations of his townsfolk. A simple list of his community engagement and service is impressive enough, and should be recorded, but it was the character he brought to those roles that was to make more of an impression on those whose paths he crossed. • As Chairman of Sandhurst Trustees he was instrumental in its merger with Bendigo Building Society. • As a director of that Society, he oversaw its transition to Bendigo Bank. • President Bendigo Rotary Club.

VALE: Warwick Johanson. Photo: DAVID FIELD

At his funeral at his home church of St Mary’s Anglican, Kangaroo Flat, on October 28, a packed congregation was itself a tribute. “Dad used to say the older you get the smaller the funeral,” son Dennis recalled. The service was conducted by Bishop Ron Stone, Canon Bryn Jones and the Very Rev. John Roundhill. Unable to attend, Bishop Andrew Curnow nonetheless ensured his own tribute was present. In a day of superlatives about a man’s character and contribution, it perhaps best summed up a remarkable life: “One of the true statesmen of Bendigo in the 20th century, his involvement with the community and leadership of Sandhurst Trustees, and his association with other organisations was outstanding.” Sons Robert – himself Chairman of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank – and Dennis spoke warmly and entertainingly of their dad’s life, before daughter Annette’s scripture reading. Granddaughter Michelle Bowman recalled a ‘parps’ well qualified – “an expert on so many subjects” – to provide life lessons like manners, courtesy and humility. All of Warwick’s seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren were present. Bishop Stone trumped the public prais-

es showered on Warwick Johanson with three of his own that found nodding heads throughout the congregation – “a man of integrity; generous; self-effacing”. Best of all, the service heard from the man himself in an engrossing video interview about his wartime service and a life he considered “fortunate”. Warwick Niven Johanson died around dawn on the morning of October 21 – that date again – almost exactly 70 years to the minute after his near-death experience aboard the Australia. It happens to be a date deeply etched in a sailor’s mind – Trafalgar Day, the commemoration of that greatest of all naval victories in 1805. The Japanese hit on young Johanson’s vessel was one of the earliest strikes in a battle that has seemingly faded from public memory but which remains the mightiest sea battle ever fought, the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Such was the damage inflicted on Japan’s navy over those few October days that it never again threatened the free world. So, October 21: two great victories, and one seaman’s death 70 years on that at first blush looks like life’s greatest defeat. But as wife Yvonne noted, if he is with his family and his mates from the navy, is it not a victory too?

Lunch a winner

THIS year’s Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch has been hailed an amazing success by event organiser and Bendigo Publishing board member Keith Sutherland, with more than $68,000 raised for research into prostate cancer. Mr Sutherland said that he was moved by the reaction of the almost 400 attendees and the spontaneous standing ovation afforded to Police Association Secretary Ron Iddles after the controversy surrounding the 2013 event. ‘’Ron was visibly overwhelmed by the good will of Bendigo people who just wanted to show their support to an amazing person,’’ he said. ‘‘He was unfairly treated by certain sections of the media and

a couple of people who missed the point about the presentation that was we all need to look after our mates.” St John of God Hospital CEO Darren Rogers also gave a detailed account of his life dealing with cancer, accidents and of course the main message of his prostate cancer journey. He said it is important for men to have regular prostate checks, and that men need to take more care of their physical and mental health needs. Bali bombing survivor and former AFL star Jason McCartney also gave an emotional talk about his football comeback and retirement but more importantly his will to live after such shocking burns and the emotional scars

that followed the 2002 bombings. ‘’The message was to never give up, accept help from family and professionals and cherish the important things in life,” Mr Sutherland said. “The valuable lesson for us all was to know there is help available and to live each day no matter what obstacles might get in our way but just do the best we can.” He also thanked everyone involved to make this the most successful Blokes Lunch so far, with a total of more than $350,000 raised over the past five years. Ready to take action The Greater Bendigo council needs a clear and combined strategy for transport and land use. The Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy currently in progress strives to provide this. The efforts towards community consultation so far by council staff, particularly project lead Katherine Wrzesinski, must be commended. There have been many numerous opportunities for interested people to have their input to this stage. Those involved in leading the project have measured, listened and tried to act on the feedback they have received. For this reason it is frustrating to hear an aspiring community leader describe ITLUS as a “top-down” approach. The opposite is true. The working group and reference groups have included representatives from local freight companies, the Bendigo Business Council, public transport operators, students and resident stakeholder groups (to name a few), alongside various industry professionals. Community workshops held earlier this year were well attended and the overwhelming feedback was that people want an inclusive community with well-developed and connected neighbourhood hubs. The current run of 11 community listening posts started in late October, and there are four remaining, at Kangaroo Flat, Marong, Heathcote and Elmore. The Bendigo Take Action Group formed in response to the eventually ill-fated Bendigo Road Transport Draft Strategy, which sought to send heavy traffic on new routes through established residential zones. Residents rose together to demonstrate that we expect our elected community leaders to put some intelligent thought (and action) into the way we live, move and grow within our city. We stood together to ensure we were heard. And we halted those within our community – and their mouthpieces – who aimed to put their own financial gain ahead of the betterment of Bendigo. We still stand firm and ready to do the same again if required. Greg Clohesy, President, Bendigo Take Action Group

Reconsider or resign In my 14 years living and working in Bendigo, our city has shone like a beacon across Australia because of its courage and vision in supporting projects both cultural and

recreational. Projects which have made generational change to our community and have firmly established Bendigo as arguably Australia’s leading community regional centre. Projects such as the Bendigo Stadium, Bendigo Tennis Centre, QEO redevelopment, Bendigo Hockey Centre, Bendigo Regional Athletics Centre and Epsom Recreation Reserve readily spring to mind. Similarly cultural projects such as the Capital Theatre redevelopment, Bendigo Gaol Restoration and continued investments in the Bendigo Trust and Chinese Precinct have reinforced council’s desire to become Australia’s most liveable city. The latest is the Greater Bendigo Aquatic and Wellbeing Centre. Innovative not only because it will vastly improve recreation in a wide fast growing community, but will cater for allied health needs of all ages as well as providing a much needed community hub for people to meet and connect. Recognised by State Government for its innovation and major benefit by being awarded a $15 million grant, the highest in government history for a regional recreational facility other than Commonwealth Games funding initiatives – this is a once- in-a-lifetime achievement. Then how can it be that there is a sense that this momentum is slipping and that the prospect of a $15 million government injection will be lost to our community? Is it possible that the efforts of a select few will undermine this project and hold onto an outdated Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre built over 30 years ago. This centre no longer meets the needs and demands of its community as it currently has only six users with only two being regular user groups who can be readily accommodated elsewhere. This is the time for community members to use their voice to spell out loud and clear that the overwhelming majority of residents not only want this facility but they want it fast tracked to completion. It is amazing that a Councillor – Elise Chapman – who is there to represent the voice of the majority of residents would continue to fly in the face of the community views and represent the views of the one solitary objector to the planning permit currently before VCAT. We urge her to either reconsider or resign. Geoff Bowyer, Kangaroo Flat

Not a good look More childcare closures to follow is not a good look for our council. Greater Bendigo council is grappling with an incongruity and inconsistency as it looks to close council run assets. There is an anomaly in the closures of childcare facilities and the proposed $30million plus aquatic centre planned at Kangaroo Flat and maintain it with the anticipated ongoing costs to ratepayers. If this proposal is so good as anticipated by council, why hasn’t a private consortium got together with a business plan and constructed the facility as a private business concern? Council has to face up to its ongoing costs which affect ratepayers, ie increased superannuation, the problem with the landfill at Eaglehawk and other infrastructure problems are not going to disappear as Bendigo increases its population and popularity for tourism. Men have a key role On November 25, people across the country will mark White Ribbon Day – Australia’s leading male-led campaign to end violence against women. VicHealth’s National Community Attitudes Survey on Violence against Women, released recently,

revealed some worrying statistics about men’s attitudes to violence. One in five Australian men does not think it is serious when a person repeatedly criticises their partner to make them feel bad or useless. One third of men do not consider someone trying to control their partner by denying them money as a form of domestic violence. And nearly one in 10 men to do not classify as serious a person throwing or smashing an object near a partner to frighten or threaten them. It is important to recognise that violence against women takes many forms. It is more than slapping, punching and sexual violence – it can be a flippant remark among friends, emotional abuse or controlling a partner’s finances. It affects wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends. All women, regardless of their roles, have the right to be safe and treated with respect. Men have a key role to play in changing attitudes which enable violence against women to continue. We have seen many high-profile men stand up and take a leading role in this regard. White Ribbon Day is an opportunity for all men to join those who have already taken a stand to challenge everyday sexism, stereotypes and disrespect towards women. Jerril Rechter, CEO VicHealth

Time for independence Despite the valiant attempt of your editorial to say otherwise, the ABC has become biased and failing in its charter to give Australians an unbiased view of the world without the personal views of the presenter clouding the issue. The ABC has a charter to report news and issues in a balanced manner, not wishing to comment on the local station as I seldom listen to it, the ABC as a whole fails in its charter. We are not talking here about light entertainment and drama products which the ABC excels at but at its news and current affairs. We have 7.30, Q&A, Four Corners to name a few programs that have broadcast un-substantiated stories for political gain the facts are there and not denied by the organisation. When the ABC returns to its role of presenting the news as it happens and its current affairs stories reported in un-biased and non-sensationalised fashion without a presenter’s personal view, Australia may well have the broadcasting organisation you wax so lyrically about. The ABC’s independence was taken away when it became dependent on government handout instead of having its own funding such as the BBC and other public broadcasters do, may its independence soon return. We need to know In just over one week’s time, central Victorian voters will finally get their say as to who they want to be their elected representatives in Spring Street for the next four years. This has been a hard fought campaign by both the major parties, with the Greens continuing to emerge as a party of choice for Victorians looking for an alternative to the policies of both Labor and the coalition. On Wednesday night this week, the two leaders who want to be premier after the November 29 election, engaged in their one and only debate in the marginal seat of Frankston. But unless you live in Frankston, or could access pay TV, you probably missed it. A lot of Victorians may not care to watch something as cru-

Editorial Comment cial to such a tight election as this debate was, but it’s wrong that too many of us simply could not watch it anyway. It is also frustrating that with just eight days to go, the Victorian opposition has not released the details of its costings, which are central to what has arguably been the ALP’s best campaign since at least the 1999 election, when Steve Bracks assumed the top job as premier of Victoria. To be fair, this is not the first

time there has been a delay in releasing costings, as the federal coalition was also late to release a lot of information regarding the election commitments that saw it swept to power at the September 7, 2013 federal election. The coalition was heavily, and rightfully, criticised at the time for those delays. But voters deserve to be fully armed with all the facts about all the promises and commitments of every party and candidate standing at any and all elections. The people of Victoria deserve to have the various parties, including the rising number of minor parties, subjected to the highest levels of scrutiny, so that the decisions we make as voters are based on the absolute best and most accurate information available.

opinion By Keith Reynard, President, Bendigo Sustainabilty Group

How would you like to imagine Bendigo in the future? A thriving regional hub that is socially connected and a leader in clean and sustainable technologies, or a dry, hot, desolate city in a state of decline and social dysfunction? The recent report from the International Panel on Climate Change issues a stark warning of what our future is likely to be under climate change scenarios. Under current business as usual practices, the world is on track to 4ºC warming by later this century. The IPCC forewarns this will have devastating consequences on most regions globally. At the G20 summit – and following the announcement by the US and China of their joint emissions reduction pact – US President Barack Obama said that we cannot ignore our responsibilities to address climate change, warning that Australia in particular faced more aggressive

weather including longer droughts. Already in the past decade, central Victoria and Bendigo has experienced prolonged drought where Bendigo was weeks away from running out of water in 2007; extended heatwave conditions leading to the Black Saturday bushfires in February, 2009; extreme rainfall in 2010 and 2011 leading to record flood events; recent record heatwaves and seasonal temperature conditions culminating in the hottest calendar year on record. And all this from a global temperature rise of only 0.8ºC above pre-industrial times. Imagine what Bendigo would be like under a 4ºC rise – or perhaps we would rather not imagine. This is not an option we want to consider. Instead, perhaps we should be imagining the benefits of avoiding a 4ºC rise in temperature. The Bendigo Sustainability Group has a vision for Bendigo to become powered by 100 per cent renewable energy. Not only will this

stimulate a move to clean technology and low carbon economy, but will also contribute our share of emission reductions globally. Australia has the most centralised electricity network in the world, and it is a very challenging task to break the monopolies of international conglomerates to enable more control of the system at a local community and regional level. But Bendigo is up to the task. The Bendigo community has demonstrated a willingness to take on the challenge and is one of the leading areas for solar installations around Australia. A number of Bendigo’s innovative industries and businesses from Keech Castings, MSD, BB Truss, Victoria Carpets and others have incorporated sustainability principles into their manufacturing and business processes. We also have the Bendigo Bank and BankMECU who display an ethical approach to investment by not supporting fossil fuel

industries. Now imagine Bendigo as a central hub for research and development into clean technology, providing leadership into new energy systems and meeting the ambition of the “Thinking City”. This is possible with inspired leadership and strong community support. The BSG provides an excellent vehicle for extensive engagement across our communities with a diverse range of action groups working on various fronts to garner the support required for Bendigo to become an innovative leading city. However, we do need leadership from businesses and politicians to take us to that next level. That is why our upcoming state election is going to be vital for Bendigo’s future innovation, especially with the opportunities for new energy and clean technology systems. So as you think about the candidates for this election, let’s imagine Bendigo as an innovative “Thinking City”.

Taking a mashing at work A recent event has forced a subject back into view

A

FEW weeks ago I ventured into the land of leg brown-

I mentioned it here and suggested despite sunning myself nothing had happened. I was going to resort to the bronzing bottle but held off. Last week I headed into work with shorts and boast shoes, feeling jaunty and full of the joys of spring. The white legs were there for all to see, and boy did I cop a serve. Old Nick, the Silver Fox himself, laid in to me first. “Oh look, Mr Potato Head’s just arrived.” I felt this was particularly cruel, but he knows how to wear shorts well. The old fisherman’s legs are as brown as a berry. So, there I was, miles from home in shorts with gleaming white legs. Abused mightily by the Silver Fox and it wasn’t even 8.45am. Thankfully it was a busy day, and the only comments about white legs came as a

passing diversion. I braved it out, and as I am often cheeky to others had to take it all in good humour. People need to see my freckled legs and accept some people just don’t tan. Melissa the grapho backed me up and gave us a flash of her legs, I think hers were whiter than mine, but no one seemed to notice while I was in their sights. The standard comment seemed to be along the lines of how bright the room was. Long Tall Drew our photographer suggested a flash had gone off in the room as he pro-

tected his eyes from the glare. It was wearing a bit thin by this point, but I laughed along. It serves me right I guess, because Old Nick wore shorts once, and I have never let him forget it. So I finally left for the day, ego in shreds and vowing to wear my shorts at each opportunity until everybody got used to the idea. After a final yell from Old Nick of Mr Potato Head I wondered if I was brave enough to wear them ever again despite my bravado. On a plus side, the sailing shoes had been a hit, with all

the young trendies, of which there are few, saying they were OK. Praise indeed. It was a hot day, and I kicked the shoes off at the door as I got home. I rushed out and spent an hour cutting grass in the hope of adding some colour to cover my embarrassment. On my way back to the house, I walked past the shoes, but they seemed unusually wet. It seems the last word had been left to a badly behaved and incontinent cat. I surrender. Twitter@stevekendall1

discover bendigo with James Lerk REDERICK Napoli Prescott, at the turn of the 20th century, had Bendigo’s leading jewellery and ophthalmologist business, but today this man is a virtually unknown – how can this be? Why is it that Frederick Prescott’s work is now cast into oblivion, yet those at the time seeking that special item as a presentation or gift, would only have approached this talented gentleman who had his business on the southwestern corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves streets. Hobart, Tasmania, is where Frederick Prescott was born in 1861, his father Edward was a well known jeweller, optician and horologist in that city. Frederick obtained his education initially at a primary school then entered the Hobart High School for a few years before being transferred by his father to the already renowned Scot’s College. An accomplished student, he matriculated when only 16-years-of-age. The respect that Mr Prescott senior enjoyed in the Hobart community was through his fair mindedness, charitableness and the pacifying influence he brought to bear on opposing parties. Undoubtedly, his influence, in part, came from him being prominent in the Masonic fraternity.

Edward Prescott had his son join the business and Frederick started learning jewellery manufacturing, horological repairs and also the art of the optician’s work. The optical work at that time required one to be able to test eyes and grind one’s own lenses. Not many decades later, in the late 19th century, a huge range of factory produced lenses started to become more freely available. Equipped with the sound base he had received in the practical aspects of the jewellery, watch making, repairing and optical fields, Frederick decided to branch out on his own, he then being 26-years-of-age. Frederick Prescott’s new business in 1883-1884 was established in Cootamundra, NSW, next door to the newspaper office. Interestingly Frederick Prescott had no need in a smaller population centre to advertise his skills, the bush telegraph worked remarkably well for him. Business was brisk, yet the young enthusiastic and idealistic Frederick Prescott, through his reading of overseas developments in relation to eye testing, began to influence his thinking. Opticians’ skills, in other countries were far ahead of what was happening in the Australian

colonies. Frederick decided to go to Europe and study in the very centres that were written up in various professional journals. For a period of three years he studied and worked in London, Dublin and Paris. He was able to gain first hand knowledge of Parisian jewellery designing and manufacturing techniques. During his time in Britain Prescott was elected as a member to the prestigious Horological Institute of London. So it was that in 1888 Frederick Prescott came to one of the greatest goldfields in the world in the 19th century, Bendigo. Just as his father, Frederick became a member of the Masonic Lodge here in Bendigo. Imbued with the same charitableness that his father had shown in Hobart, Frederick offered to provide free eye tests and spectacles for inmates of the Benevolent Asylum, who invariably did not have the money to pay. Not averse to advertising here in Bendigo, Pre-

Dear Dotty, I met a really nice man on the net and have been dating him for a few weeks now. He has been married before and has six kids and his wife ran away and left him with the kids. But that’s not the problem. As our relationship has been progressing we have started to kiss and so on. I am pretty sure he wants to go onto the next level of courtship if you know what I mean. But that’s not the problem. The problem is that I have very thin hair, it is so thin that I wear a wig all the time. It is a very good wig so I’m pretty sure he thinks I’m a natural blond with thick wavy hair. When and at what stage do I reveal to him that all is not how it seems? Frances from Epsom Oh dear Frances, Hair today, gone tomorrow, that’s life I suppose. I remember when I was a gal wigs were popular. We wore them as a fashion accessory in a vain attempt to look like Jean Shrimpton. I was on a date one night when I drank a bottle of Ouzo thinking it was water, a mistake anybody could make. At one point during the night I lay down and put my head on my friend’s lap and

looked up adoringly into his eyes. So far so good, but it was when I sat up and left the thick black wig sitting on his lap that things went awry. The look of horror on his face as he gazed at his hairy crutch is something I will never forget. After that I didn’t wear a wig anymore. But this doesn’t solve your problem. What I would do is start from the bottom up. Just before you get into bed with him, this is what I presume you are alluding to, I would stand dramatically in front of him and tell him you have something to confess. Tell him that all is not as it seems, mutter something about cross-dressing and then ask him if he is ready to see the real you. When you take off your wig he will be so relieved he will welcome you with open arms. Good luck with it all and keep me posted. Twitter @DearDotty

It is your first duty to the foremost blessing of nature to have them examined by a competent optician. I am thoroughly competent, and will gladly tell you what the trouble is, and the remedy. AR is in the air, at least in terms of civic events and publications. The books are coming out thick and fast regarding the anniversary of the Anzacs. While plenty of focus is on the men who fought, apart from the nursing fraternity, there are a few remarkable women who were directly involved in military campaigns and deserve recognition. One book which does exactly that is the biography of Nancy Wake, written by Peter Fitzsimons. Nancy couldn’t wait to leave Australia and set sail for England in 1932 when she was 20 years old. She worked as a freelance journalist in England and France where she reported on Hitler’s ascendency to power. Disgusted by the Nazi’s treatment of Jewish people, when England declared war she was anxious to fight back against Germany’s spreading tide. Married by now to a French millionaire, Nancy was ravishing looking and feisty. Her husband Henri Fiocca adored her – much to the chagrin of his family who thought he could do better than this uncouth Australian. She worked for the Resistance as a courier and would move Jewish families to safe houses and get them across the Pyrenees to neutral Spain. By 1943 she was on the Gestapo’s most wanted list. She was so wily the Gestapo nick-named her the White Mouse When the Gestapo were actively looking for her she fled to England over the Pyrenees herself. But eager to return to the fray she trained

with the Special Operations Executive and was parachuted behind enemy lines into France. When it was her turn to jump, she asked an airman to push her out Her job was to organise airdrops of weapons and train some 7000 tough and hardened partisans. Her courage was awesome. She continually risked capture, torture and death. She led raids against German troops and slept rough with the partisans. She had no compunction about executing traitors but would not countenance torture. The great tragedy of her war was that her beloved husband Henri was caught by the Gestapo and tortured in order to reveal her whereabouts. They beat him so viciously his kidneys fell out of his back and then they shot him. But he would not betray Nancy. Nancy Wake was copiously awarded by the English and French but it took longer for the Australians to recognise her feats of bravery. This is a ripper yarn. Peter Fitzsimons has a great ability to take you along the tide of his narrative while at the same time providing the pertinent details of the war.

NOVEMBER 16-23, 2014

Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation week.

Right now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts.

Now is the time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, prepare your property, and decide what you’ll do if a fire starts.

What can you do to prepare? Talk to your family about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days. Check the Fire Danger Rating for your area every day and know which Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to act. Understand how to stay informed by accessing warnings and updates, and know how to use them.

Last summer, firefighters responded to more than 40,000 incidents, and 4,600 bushfires and grassfires burned across the state. This year, the season forecast tells us that we’re facing an aboveaverage risk of bushfire and grassfire.

On hot, dry, windy days, fires can start and spread quickly. If the Fire

Danger Rating is Code Red, Extreme or Severe, you’re risking your life if you wait and see. Leaving late means driving your family through smoke, fallen trees and powerlines, and facing the risk of being trapped or worse. Leaving early is the safest option to protect yourself and your family.

Premier Hon Dr Denis Napthine

This week, CFA brigades around the state are opening their doors and getting out and about in their community to talk about getting ready for summer. You can check cfa.vic.gov.au/events for information on what’s happening in your local area.

For more information on how to get prepared for summer, go to emergency.vic.gov.au, or ring the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. If you have a hearing or speech impairment, contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) via the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677. Remember, it’s up to you to take responsibility for your safety and the safety of your family. This summer, leave and live. The Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP Premier of Victoria

Fire Action Week Nov. 16-23

Protect your family by planning ahead this summer. Fire Action Week is a great opportunity to gather all the information you need to prepare for this year’s fire season. Find out about FireReady meetings in your area and check CFA’s website to see if your local CFA brigade is holding an Open Day during Fire Action Week. Remember to talk to your family about what you’re going to do on a high fire risk day. Take a taste of sour B

ENDIGO’S artisan sourdough bakery The Good Loaf in Hargreaves Street, is providing an effective solution for diet conscious customers over the Christmas season. With many people experiencing a hectic social calendar at this time of year and the responsibility of catering to a variety of tastes and dietary requirements, The Good Loaf’s range of sourdough breads are an effective solution. The extended and natural fermentation process occurring in the creation of authentic sourdough changes the nature

of the bread’s starches; and has been found to make the bread more easily digestible. The lowering of insulin responses and the breakdown of gluten results in a bread that many of the gluten-sensitive public find that they can eat without adverse bloating and discomfort. If Christmas party weight gain is a concern, the glycaemic index of 51 categorises sourdough bread as a low GI food (normal white breads rank in the high index category of 70 points or more), assisting with weight management by improving

appetite control and delaying hunger. The Good Loaf offers a considerable variety of sourdough and semisourdough breads including organic white, seedy, roasted pumpkin, ciabatta, corn rolls, wholemeal, rye and fruit and a vegan selection including agave loaves. Bakery owner Cheryl Martin said “We get excited to hear about what our customers have planned for their Christmas bread. “In addition to sandwiches, rolls and barbecues, we hear about our pumpkin

bread becoming bread and butter pudding and our fruit bread is highly sought after as an accompaniment for fine cheeses. “This week will see our bakers begin the Christmas tradition baking mince tarts and short breads, which along with our classic brioche buns always sell quickly as an indulgent Christmas treat.”

’Tis the season to start roasting H

AVE yourself a merry little Christmas, with delicious beef and lamb roasting recipes for the season. With beef rated our nation’s most superior meat, and lamb deemed the meat Aussies love the most, there are no better dishes to indulge in on your Christmas celebrations than mouthwatering beef and lamb roasts. In the following weeks until Christmas, we will be featuring succulent recipes. Make sure you perfect your festive dinner, with these top roasting tips: • Ask your butcher to tie your beef roast cut if needed as some, like beef fillet and beef rib eye, benefit from it. Tying it gives the roast a uniform shape, which helps it cook evenly. • When you buy an easy carve lamb leg, the butcher will have partially deboned the lamb leg, leaving just the shank in. The butcher will also tie it, so it’s compact in shape. Christmas roasting tips: • Place the roast on a rack in a roasting dish. Raising the roast helps it brown

Roast lamb, carrots and parsnips with cumin and mint. evenly. Brush it lightly with oil. Season with salt, pepper and any flavourings. • The easiest way to judge your roast’s degree of doneness is by using a meat thermometer. The internal temperature for: Rare – 55-60ºC, Medium – 65-70ºC, Well done – 75ºC. • Remove roast when cooked to desired doneness. Transfer to a plate, cover loosely with foil and rest for 10-20 minutes before carving. Carve the roast across the grain to ensure tenderness. • Resting a roast before carving gives the juices in the meat a chance to

redistribute, giving a more moist and tender result. • You can also use tongs to test the roast’s doneness: Gently prod or squeeze the roast – rare is very soft, medium rare is soft, medium is springy but soft, medium well is firm and well done is very firm. • It is best to test the meat just before reaching the estimated cooking time (so it doesn’t overcook): Check the temperature when the estimated cooking time is a little way from up. Take larger roasts out of the oven just short of the desired time, as the larger roasts and bone in roasts tend to cook further and go up just a little in temperature as they rest. Barbecue roasting tips: • Avoid lifting the lid too often. • Avoid ramping up the flame directly under the meat when adjusting the heat as this dries the roast out . • Allow for resting time before cooking as well as resting time after cooking. OES your best friend have feathers? If so, your next best friend should be Dr Susan Bibby, an experienced avian veterinarian working at myvet Strathfieldsaye. Birds are the third most popular pet in Australia, and have very different diseases, anatomy and physiology than dogs and cats. With low numbers of avian vets, Susan’s skills have been in high demand since the vet clinic recently opened in Strathfieldsaye. “We’ve already provided hospital care, treatment and surgery for all sorts of birds including parrots and ducks. We have also seen a number of chickens with Marek’s disease,” Susan said. Marek’s disease is highly contagious and kills over 20 per cent of infected chickens. Signs of Marek’s disease in younger chickens include paralysis of legs and wings,

and in older birds signs include loss of appetite, weight loss, going off the lay and sometimes tumours. “Owners can protect their chickens by vaccinating them within three days of hatching. “If you are buying point-of-lay pullets, ask the vendor whether they have been vaccinated. “Or if you are buying day-old chicks, contact us as we have a supply of effective vaccine that we can administer.” Susan is available for consultation Wednesday to Friday. myvet Strathfieldsaye open Monday to Saturday, at 942 Wellington Street Strathfieldsaye. Delivery service

HOPPING from Ikea has never been easier thanks to Rick Bennett of the Big Swedish Store Run. Especially for those who don’t have the time for a Melbourne return trip or a large enough vehicle or trailer. Customers simply view Ikea’s website and email the Big Swedish Store Run a shopping list, sit back and wait for a quote. “We then send you a quote for buying and delivering the chosen items to your front door,” Rick said who grew up in Bendigo before returning in 2001. “By combining several orders into each trip we also provide a more environmentally friendly alternative than numerous car and trailer trips. “We have probably saved a few marriages too – for many partners, a trip to Ikea does not make their day.” After providing an identical service to residents of Geelong for the last three years and establishing themselves in Bendigo earlier in the year the Big Swedish Store Run already have a catalogue full of satisfied clients. “A minimum pickup and delivery fee of $50 covers all smaller purchases with larger items starting at just $65,” Rick said. “I’m at the Richmond store at least once a week but get out to the Springvale store when needed.”

TRATEGEM recently appointed Justin Gordon as a director and partner of Strategem. As a senior associate with 17 years service, Justin will be joining Garry Chambers, Trevor Elliott, Chris Harrington, Stuart McKenzie, Kevin Martin and Peter Murphy as board members. Strategem’s evolution originally began in 1932 in View Street as W.A. Draper, where in 1944 they employed a young Bill Ashman and as the saying goes, the rest his history. Justin’s appointment also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Ashman Ralph & Associate, a merger of two firms which laid the groundwork for today’s Strategem. Recently Bill Ashman and Bruce Ralph returned to Strategem’s office to help

celebrate Justin’s new directorship. “As the two oldest prior owners of the business, it was fitting for Bill and Bruce to meet our newest accounting graduate Jaran Harvie who joined us last year and is completing his final studies at La Trobe University” Strategem’s CEO David Richardson said. During the celebrations, Bill and Bruce reflected on the manual machines and processes that were used during their years in the industry. Bill was delighted to display the adding machine that was carried by staff to jobs during the 1950s and 1960s. “The machine was originally purchased from the Bell Punch Company in England and was considered a revolutionary piece of technology at the time,” Bill said, who has now donated the machine to Strategem’s history cabinet. www.strategem.com.au

HEN physiotherapist Lee Bray isn’t speeding across the water performing breathtaking manoeuvres at Bridgewater or interstate, you’ll now find him at the Bendigo Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic. After recently returning from what Lee describes as an “incredible education and adventure” working and travelling around Australia with his family he is now busy establishing his own Bendigo physiotherapy practice. Lee has more than 12 years of musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy experience, treating patients with a variety of soft tissue, joint, spinal and sports injuries. A keen interest in sports including running and water skiing and their associated injuries has even had Lee accompany the Australian Water Ski Team internationally as official physiotherapist to numerous World Championships. As a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and Sports

Physiotherapy Australia, Lee is constantly learning new and improved ways to treat and rehabilitate patients after injury or surgery. “Good physiotherapy and correct advice can significantly reduce pain and get people back moving and performing at their highest level as quickly and as safely as possible” Lee said. Lee uses a variety of manual therapy techniques including soft tissue, spinal and joint manipulation, dry needling and kinesiotaping. “This in combination with appropriate exercise programs enables me to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal condition in people across all age groups and activity levels.” Lee also accepts TAC, WorkCover and DVA claims.

INDA Sawyer has settled right into the semi-rural lifestyle Bendigo offers in just six short years, to become a successful businesswoman, wife and mother. “After graduating from university as a nurse I worked as a surgical, respiratory and a cardiology research nurse before completeing a graduate diploma of Sleep Medicine and moving to Bendigo in 2008,” Linda said. Recent developments including a husband, a new daughter along with the establishing and day-to-day running of the Bendigo Sleep lab hasn’t curtailed this rock hopping, mud crawling, 4WD enthusiast in the least. “If it wasn’t for the birth of my first daughter in June, I’d have volunteered again for this year’s Outback Challenge held out of Broken Hill,“ Linda added who regulary volunteers as an official medic for such events. Linda’s impressive purple landcruiser which incidentally was the catalyst for ARB’s popular comical Ariel character

was built by her dad. “I know how to break it, he knows how to fix it,“ she laughs. Sleep though is no laughing matter as her many clients know. Linda has worked with both public and private clients as a sleep therapist in Sydney, prior to moving to Bendigo and establishing Bendigo Sleep Lab with the help of her professional staff. Today Bendigo Sleep Lab specialises in home based sleep monitoring and professional treatments for a broad range of sleep problems such as snoring, sleep apnoea, circadian rhythm disorders and insomnia. The qualified staff at Bendigo Sleep Lab practice throughout the regional area including Swan Hill, Deniliquin, Donald, Woodend and Cohuna. “We provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative to hospital-based sleep laboratories, which benefits both practitioners and patients,” Linda said. New treatment proves beneficial

HELPFUL: Rachel Poustie of Goldfields Osteopathy.

O

STEOPATH Dr Rachel Poustie of Goldfields Osteopathy in Garsed Street is now offering Radial Shockwave Therapy to both new and existing patients. RSWT can be effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly chronic muscular and tendon problems that have not responded to other forms of therapy. Rachel says many scientific studies published in reputable medical journals have proven the efficacy and safety of RSWT in the

treatment of the many conditions including plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. “The shockwave is a physical one, not an electric one as the name may misleadingly suggest,” Rachel said. “The shockwave is short energy wave travelling faster than the speed of sound generated by an air compressor into the body’s tissues via a handpiece or applicator held against the skin.” Rachel is already well known to hundreds of Bendigo patients who

have benefited from her treatment since returning to Bendigo a decade ago. RSWT has previously only been available to elite athletes, but Goldfields Osteopathy is the only osteopathic clinic in Central Victoria offering this therapy to anyone, whether you’re an elite sports person or a backyard warrior. Richards at new peak By JOEL PETERSON

IF you had told Gabe Richards three years ago that by her 30th birthday she would be a WNBL all-star, have two championships and a world championships bronze medal, her response would have been fairly straightforward. “I would have told you that you were joking.” All jokes aside, that is exactly what she has done in the last two years, her star rising to a level among the elite in Australian, if not world basketball. The turnaround has surprised no one more than Richards herself, who has battled with her fitness and persistent injuries during a nine-year WNBL career. “It has been incredible. At no point did I ever think I would be an Opal, and it was incredible for us to win one championship for us on our home court, let alone two,” she said on Wednesday as she celebrated her birthday with workmates at Bendigo Toyota. “Whatever keeps it rolling, I don’t want it to stop because it has just been awesome.”

A season off in 2009/10, recurring knee problems and a host of surgeries plagued Richards until the off-season of 2012. She took the year off from SEABL competition, improved her fitness dramatically, won a premiership with Mount Pleasant in the Heathcote and District Netball Association and the rest, as they say, is history. “I had always battled with my fitness, and around then I lost a lot of weight. It didn’t necessarily change what I did on the floor, but just allowed me to do it better,” she said. “I was always effective when I was out on the floor, but now I can play bigger minutes and do what I need to do out there.” The Spirit had never been the tallest team in the past, and largely relied on Richards to hold down the middle of the defence and stop the likes of Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop and Liz Cambage. What was once a weakness is now arguably one of the team’s strengths, thanks to Richards’ continued emer-

gence as one of the league’s stars, yet still one of its more underrated players. That strength will need to be at the fore on Saturday, when the Spirit hosts Townsville from 7.30pm at the Bendigo Stadium. “Everyone knows how big Bernie is on defence and I’ve been able to get better on that end,” Richards said. “Also this year with our athleticism, we have the ability to push the ball up the floor and the fitness certainly helps with that. “Having all that shooting certainly opens things up on the inside a bit, but playing against the likes of Suzy and Cayla Francis for Townsville is clearly still a huge challenge.” As one of the mainstays of the Spirit lineup, the effervescent centre one of the team’s best known players, and is a favourite of the fans at the Bendigo Stadium. Her long association with the club and coach Bernie Harrower as well as housemate Kelly Wilson and point guard Kristi Harrower, leads to some remarkable chemistry

on the floor. Especially when the two guards run what has become somewhat of a go-to play, and lob the ball in the paint to set Richards up for an easy lay-up. “When I miss those shots there is a bit of a joke that I am costing them assists, but my rebounding stats would be down if I made them all,” Richards said, laughing as she explains one of the team’s long-running jokes. “Those two are great to play with, so is the whole group. The chemistry we have is talked about a lot, but I really believe it is one of the biggest reasons for the success we have had.” Teammates Sara Blicavs and Tessa Lavey dropped in to her work bearing presents, but Richards figured that she perhaps would not get her main birthday wish. “I wouldn’t mind the night off training, but I don’t think Bernie would like that too much,” she said. “I think a win on Saturday would be a great present, but we know that Townsville will make us earn it.”

Emu Valley Cricket Association – Division 1

Rangas on a streak MANDURANG’S unbeaten run to start the Emu Valley Cricket Association season looks like continuing, with the Rangas in a commanding position of their round four match against Marong. Five wickets from Michael Healy and two from recruit James Pietromonaco led the home side as they dismissed the Panthers for 117 at Pearce Reserve. Dean Cosgriff (29) led the way for Marong, who will need a miracle to claim victory when Mandurang resume their innings at 1/63 this week, with Phil Berry (19) and Cain Ladiges (23) at the crease. At JG Edwards Oval, second-placed United produced a gritty batting performance to be all-out for 200, despite six wickets from Emu Creek’s Justin Hancock. Hancock took 6/50 from his 23.1 overs, including the first four scalps, as United found itself in trouble in the early going at 3/13. Young guns Josh Filo (45) and Joe Hartney (65) rescued the innings for the Tigers, putting on 81 for the fifth wicket

to set the Emus a target of 201 for victory. Emu Creek will resume its run chase at 0/24 after five overs, with Brad Rowe and skipper Daniel Chamberlain at the crease. At Champions IGA Oval, Axe Creek’s Nick Skeen and Greg Le Poidevin ripped through the West Bendigo batting lineup to secure first innings points for the Cowboys. Skeen (4/33) and Le Poidevin (2/35) orchestrated the demise of the Redbacks, sharing the first six wickets to leave the visitors reeling at 6/8. Luckily for Wests, Brad McHugh (36) and the inform Shaun Stone (44) added

some respectability to the scorecard by putting on 66 for the seventh wicket. After McHugh was caught off the bowling of Graham Gamble, the tail offered little resistance as the Redbacks were skittled for 122 off just 30 overs. Le Poidevin then dominated with the bat, making 82, with the versatile Brannon Stanford adding 57, as Axe Creek cruised to 7/231 at stumps from 45 overs. An even batting performance from Golden Gully saw the Cobras declare at 9/225 against Spring Gully on day one at Cal Gully Oval. Nathan Shatwell top scored with 50* for the hosts, while Brad Webster (32), Matt

Kile (30) and Travis Nolan (29) also chipped in to the total. Des Gilmore toiled hard for figures of 2/63 from 20 overs for the Crows, who went to stumps at 0/11 from a potentially dangerous period of five overs. Finally, Matt Dwyer continued a rich vein of form for Sedgwick, making 64 as the Rams declared on 9/276 in their clash with Maiden Gully. Seven of the Rams’ batsmen made at least 19 as they set Gully 277 for the points, from only 61 overs. In reply, Maiden Gully finished the day at 1/15 from 11 overs after the early wicket of David Becker off the bowling of Dwyer.

Coach returns AFTER a successful 2014 interleague campaign, former Golden Square premiership coach Rick Ladson has been reappointed as coach of the Bendigo Football netball league’s interleague side. Ladson will oversee the blue and gold charge as it takes on arch rivals Ballarat on Saturday, May 23. Ladson coached Square to the 2013 BFNL flag before giving way to Nick Carter in 2014, and will next year play sporadically with Macorna in the Golden Rivers FL The 30-year-old year-old told the Weekly that he is excited to take on the challenge of interleague football again in 2015, saying he “absolutely loves” the concept. “I was definitely keen when the opportunity came up this year, and I am really looking forward to it again next year,” he said. “It was a real privilege to

be in the position this year, the support from the league and (assistant coaches) Daniel Geary and Ty Elliott was great too. “We put a really exciting, committed group together, and hopefully those guys can stick around this year because we want to get this league back to where it should be - at the top of the rankings.” Bendigo is currently sixth on the country championships rankings, behind Geelong, Goulburn Valley, Peninsula and Ovens and Murray, with Ballarat in fifth after being smashed by the GVFL this year. The location of the game is yet to be determined, however the leagues met this week. The 2013 clash between the two sides, that Ladson was a player in, was played at Ballarat’s Eastern Oval.

BIKE PARK A WINNER FOR HARCOURT HARCOURT will receive a huge economic boost if Labor wins power at this month’s state election, with $1million of funding promised for the region’s mountain bike park this week. The development, planned for a former pine plantation, is expected to add around $10m to the local economy.

The total cost of the project is $2m, with Labor set to seek other partners to complete the project. “This is about bringing tourists to Central Victoria and building a local icon,” shadow minister for regional and rural development Jacinta Allan said. “Locals have called for something like this and Labor has listened.”

Festival a hit By JOEL PETERSON

NEW COURT: Councillors Elise Chapman and Peter Cox stepped out on the new surface with club members.

Upgrade steps up tennis facilities THE Lockwood South Tennis Club will be hitting up its redeveloped courts this weekend, after Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox unveiled the upgraded facility on Tuesday. The $150,000 upgrade involved the resurfacing of three courts with plexipave acrylic surface and also included new linemarking. The club, which competes in the Marong and District Tennis Association, and its players, will also benefit from increased safety at the courts. “As part of the project the boundaries of the two original acrylic courts have also been extended to provide sufficient run off for players,” Cox said.

“This included extending the concrete footprint and relocating and replacing all fencing around the perimeter of all three courts.” The upgrade was required to repair damaged and worn court surfaces and meet current Australia-wide standards. “With the work complete, the courts now meet the standards required by Tennis Australia’s guidelines which is great news,” he said. “The upgrade is expected to increase player participation, opportunities for player development and importantly provide a safe playing environment for all tennis players who use the facility.”

BENDIGO Tennis Association executive officer Leon Retallick says this year’s Bendigo Festival of Tennis was again a huge success. The festival, in its second year, drew hundreds of players to Bendigo to compete in the five tournaments on offer during the two weeks. The showpiece events, the William Loud Bendigo International ProTour events, were taken out by Eri Hozumi and Fangzhou Liu, respectively. Retallick said the standard of play and community involvement across the two weeks, in all the events put on by the BTA, was exceptional. “We probably had around 6000 people through the gate across the two weeks including spectators, family and friends of players and the players themselves,” he said. “For the first week we had nearly all 30 courts up and running all the time, which was fantastic to see. The fact that we have 30 courts here is a big advantage for us, and we try to get as much happening across the facility as we can. “The players were great, especially Fangzhou Liu. She is an exceptional player, I expect her to be another player that goes on to do great things in the world of tennis, and she will always remember where she won her first professional tournament.” The festival will only feature one ProTour event next year, which Retallick admits is disappointing, but from an organisational standpoint may benefit the BTA. Off the back of two successful junior tournaments and its new corpo-

rate challenge, the BTA has plenty of fresh ideas for the 2015 festival. For now, however, its attention turns to Monday night’s Australian Tennis Awards, where it is a nominee in two categories.

“I think we are the only facility to be a finalist in two categories, which is a big honour,” Retallick said. “We have 14 representatives heading along, and win, lose or draw it should be an exciting night.”

THE Bendigo Braves are looking to make a splash in the club’s 30th anniversary year, with Michael Vigor and reigning SEABL MVP Tony Lewis inking contracts with the club this week. Vigor will return after his debut campaign in 2014, while Lewis – who averaged over 22 points and 11 rebounds for Dandenong last season – will be in his first stint with the Braves. Ben Harvey, who returns for another season as head coach, says he is pleased to have the duo on board for the 2015 campaign. “It’s great to have Michael back for a second season, I think he will only improve on what was a great first year with the club,” Harvey said. “When we found out Tony was on the market it was a priority for us to source his availability. “It is great to have a guarantee on the type of player and it makes it a lot easier moving into the season. “He was a standout last season and we know he can deliver the same results here in Bendigo.” Lewis, the former Illinois state standout who stands at 201cm, said he was looking forward to the new challenge with the Braves. “I’m excited to be in the SEABL for another season and I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and the Bendigo basketball community,” he said. The Braves will also hold try-outs for both SEABL and Big V teams this Saturday, November 22.

Gabe has reason to celebrate Not even Gabe Richards could have predicted the success she has enjoyed on the basketball court in the past two years. As she celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, the Bendigo Spirit star reflected on a whirlwind past 24 months. - Story Page 38
