PH Property will auction a centrally located four bedroom home with residential zoning on Saturday from 11am. The home at 96 Hargreaves Street is set on 485 square metres with rear access, and is a classic 1970s custom built brick home with loads of living space, partial ensuite and could also be suitable for dual occupancy (STCA). Elders Bendigo has a good size block of 2023 square metres at Goornong, to be auctioned on Saturday from 10am onsite. The block has bitumen road frontage, town water and is a flat parcel of land on the Goornong Fosterville Road with a Township Zoning, just 20 minutes from Bendigo. THIS week’s decision by the board of the Reserve Bank to leave interest rates on hold means home owners will have to wait at least another month for more relief. At its meeting on Tuesday, the RBA decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at a record 2.25 per cent. In a statement released by governor Glenn Stevens, the bank said growth in the global economy continued at a moderate pace in 2014, with a similar performance expected by most observers in 2015. Governor Stevens also hinted at further rate cuts in the

RECORD: Residential construction is a success story in Australia. months ahead as the impacts of high unemployment, a relatively stagnant economy and the need for stimulus increase. The RBA also remains concerned at what it perceives to be the high cost of housing in many Australian cities. The bank is working with other regulators to assess and contain risks that may arise from the housing market. In other asset markets, prices for equities and commercial property have risen, in part as a result of declining long-term interest rates. The Housing Industry Association has released the Sum-

mer 2015 edition of its National Outlook, Australia’s most comprehensive housing report card. HIA chief economist Harley Dale said the report card shows 2014/15 as the year when a record number of new homes will be commenced in Australia. “Residential construction is the success story of the Australian domestic economy, although wide geographical divergences are still evident, trading conditions are more competitive than ever, and the renovations part of the market is still soft,” he said. “National new home building activity is the star of the

housing show with a record level of 195,936 new dwelling commencements forecast for 2014/15. “That result would represent growth of 7.7 per cent and cap a third year in a row where new home construction has headed higher. “Imagine how weak the Australian economy would be without new housing and its economic multiplier benefits. “We need to build on the lofty heights being achieved this new housing cycle and ensure that supply in coming years meets the requirements of a growing and ageing population.’’

BETTER OPTION: Victoria Wyckelsma is seeking volunteers. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Help out with health

IF you you are male, aged 18 to 45, and feel you’re not getting much exercise, a local researcher needs your help. Victoria Wyckelsma is the inaugural Holsworth Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Exercise Physiology at La Trobe University Bendigo and she is trying to find out how easy it can be to exercise to get health benefits for males who could be at risk of developing diabetes. “The overall aims of my research during my postdoctoral fellowship are to find is what is the minimal amount of time needed to exercise and how easily this exercise can be performed to get health benefits,” Dr Wyckelsma said. “To do this we are running a series of studies over 2015, this first

study will investigate what is the optimal intensity for regulating glucose after a meal and for 48 hours subsequent to that exercise bout. “We are looking for sedentary male adults aged between 18-45 years, who currently perform less than three hours of physical activity a week.” The study cannot include participants who have pre-diagnosed metabolic disease such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, however people who have blood pressure regulated by medication are able to participate. “We will ask participants will perform supervised exercise (on an exercise bike) once a week over three weeks,” Dr Wyckelsma said. “The exercise intensity will differ on a

weekly basis and will either by high, moderate or low intensity. “The exercise will be performed in the morning before working hours allowing anyone wanting to participate to make it to work on time after each exercise bout.’’ Dr Wyckelsma said plans for the future involve researching the best way to prescribe this exercise, but she needs volunteers to find out what exercise intensity should be prescribed. The research is supported by the Bendigo Tertiary Education Anniversary Fund and the Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation research focus area. Anyone who is interested should contact Dr Wyckelsma by email at v.wyckelsma@ latrobe.edu.au

A passion passed on By Dianne Dempsey

Over the years while lying on John Gault’s examination table many patients have been distracted by the latest picture attached to his ceiling. Dr Gault’s rooms are resplendent with art work which he has been collecting for the past 50 years. Whereever you look there are exquisite pieces: a Leonard French here, an Arthur Boyd there. “One day some smart-arse said to me why don’t you put something on the ceiling so we can all have a look. So I did. I got my handyman to attach a picture up there,” Dr Gault said. ‘That was all very well but then another smart-arse said he was getting bored and would I please change the picture. In the end a very clever chap organised some brackets and a winch system which means that I can change the pictures myself.” The latest picture on Dr Gault’s ceiling is a Sidney Nolan lithograph from the Ned Kelly series. But the Nolan and the 70 other paintings and lithographs will soon be going. After 50 years as a doctor and heart specialist, Dr Gault has recently retired. “I no longer have the honorific of doctor,” he says. Just Mr Gault

from now on. But I quite like it.” Mr Gault, who is 82 this year, has recently put his historic rooms at 201-203 View street on the market. The ornate, Queen Anne-style building was commissioned by a Dr Eadie in 1899 “regardless of cost”. “I have sat in the same rooms as Dr Eadie looking over the Queen Elizabeth Oval for the past 30 years,” Mr Gault says. As well as selling the View Street property, in an extraordinary act of generosity, Mr Gault is donating much of his artwork to the Bendigo Art Gallery. Senior curator Tansy Curtin said that the bequest was a unique situation. “It’s not often you get a big collection like this, it is very exciting. However while I have chosen 27 pieces for the gallery, we have yet to go through a certain process whereby the gallery board gives its final approval of the gift. “But my first impression is that the collection is unique. You can see John’s passion for the art shine through the collection. I think it reflects John’s passion for music, the opera and art.” Mr Gault was particularly keen for a particular series of lithographs to go to the gallery’s substantial works on paper collection.

To mark its 40th anniversary Opera Australia commissioned a series of lithographs from prominent artists who were asked to create an image from a particular opera. Mr Gault consequently bought a lithograph from each of the series, his favourite being Robert Dickerson’s interpretation of Don Giovanni. The artists used a variety of printing techniques to produce works based on the Opera’s repertoire which include La Clemenza di Tito (John Coburn), The Barber of Seville (Colin Lanceley), Ariadne and Naxos (Kerrie Lester), The Flying Dutchman (Mandy Martin), Julius Ceasar (David Wadelton) and Madame Butterfly (Judy Watson). Ms Curtin was reluctant to put a financial value on Mr Gault’s collection but if the print quality of a lithograph is excellent and the production numbers are low, lithographs may have significant value. Mr Gault said he has been buying limited edition prints for many years and clearly remembers the day he bought the Sidney Nolan on the ceiling. “I went to Melbourne one day to see the accountant and came away feeling profoundly depressed about the tax bill. To cheer

GENEROUS: John Gault is bequeathing his collection to the Bendigo Art Gallery. myself up I went to the Southern Cross Galleries and bought the piece for $600, framed. “I don’t want to sell the pictures, as far as I am concerned it’s quid pro quo. “I did line all the children up first, stepchildren as well, in order of age, and said they could pick a painting from the entire collection.” ”The children are not acquisitive people. After I die, the pictures go to my wife Anne Paris and then everything goes to the gallery.” Mr Gault looks around as his

furnishings as well as the paintings are being packed up. “I used to start every day reading ECGs at St John of God. I was always on call. I’ve lived with pressure for 60 years. “Now I start the day practising viola and violin. I’m still having lessons. It’s rather nice to relax. Anne and I go for a swim every morning and in winter she takes me for a walk – we don’t have a dog.” “I was at the Star Cinema the other day and I sat back and thought, Freedom! Freedom!”

Chapman says sorry

By CHRISTINE McGINN

PROCEDURAL red tape has stalled councillor Elise Chapman’s attempt to make a statement about a controversial twitter incident. The written statement, prepared with assistance from mayor Peter Cox, includes an apology, an explanation and information about the incident which included a tweet of a graphic image involving the genital mutilation of young girls. Cr Chapman tried to move a motion at Wednesday night’s council meeting to make her statement, but was unsuccessful with only Cr Helen Leach in support. Despite Cr Chapman saying she would release the statement when “ready and able”, the Weekly has seen the document. Late yesterday, Cr Chapman said she had not intended to release the statement and had only agreed to release the document in its entirety to the Bendigo Weekly after another media outlet circulated a photograph which included the statement’s front page, despite Cr Chapman’s protests. It was revealed last week that Cr Chapman tweeted the explicit image in response to a Bendigo woman who posted a comment in favour of Islam. “Oh we could have this here too? Would you like your fanny sliced off?” Cr Chapman tweeted. Mayor Peter Cox told the Weekly yesterday he and Cr Chapman had numerous meetings and he wanted the matter resolved in a week, not 18 months like a previous AMICUS incident. “I certainly helped Cr Chapman write the statement,” he said.

STALLED: Elise Chapman planned to read a statement at Wednesday’s council meeting. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

“If I had (Wednesday) night again I’d do things differently. The outcome I want for Bendigo generally (not just council) is a solution. “I have already said the words and graphics were not of her standing as a councillor. I will be having further meetings with councillors. “Council can take two direc-

tions. Cr Chapman can make an apology and I think she is nearly ready to do that and may have done so last night. “Or there can be a Code of Conduct panel which takes about 18 months with bureaucrats and plenty of media stories. “It’s about negotiations. We are

trying to work towards solutions but I don’t have everyone working towards it around the table or in the community.” Cr Cox said he disallowed Cr Chapman to make the statement at another point in the meeting as he “didn’t have the councillors on board at that time”.

“This is to get everyone to come to a satisfactory solution and everyone has to speak out,” he said. “I’m not supporting her… I am trying to get a satisfactory solution. I’m interested in the long-term interests in Bendigo and we don’t need this boiling over for the next 18 months.”

‘I sincerely apologise for my misunderstanding’ Cr Chapman’s statement, including her apology, appears below and as provided to the Bendigo Weekly. Over the past week there has much attention given to a social media response I made to a person who had challenged my position on the proposed construction of a religious facility in Bendigo. The comments, which were sent to my personal twitter account, were made in explicit terms. I responded in similarly strong terms and forwarded

an image. I acknowledge, that based on the media representation of events many people regard my comments to have not been appropriate. I sincerely apologise to council and the wider community. Some two years ago I approached a senior executive officer to discuss with him the fact that I was a regular user of social media. In order to protect myself and council, I asked for his advice as to how to make it clear that messages sent from my personal account were an expression of my personal views SPECIAL

Bound for Japan

FEDERAL Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters will visit the Japanese Ministry of Defence next week. Ms Chesters will take miniature replicas of the locallymade Thales Bushmaster vehicles to Japan as a gesture to discuss the four ordered for deployment with the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force. “I am really looking forward to the opportunity to meet and present the Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defence, Kenji Harada and the Japanese Ministry of Defence with the small gift of replica Bendigo-manufactured Bushmasters,” she said. “It’s perfect timing as the first Bendigo manufactured Thales Bushmasters are in transit and on their way to Japan.” The Japanese Ministry of Defence will brief Ms Chesters on disaster response and international co-operation and she will meet with the Mr Harada.

MODEL PRODUCT: Lisa Chesters MP will be taking the mini Bushmasters to Japan.

“It’s an important opportunity to promote Bendigo’s proud defence manufacturing history and we hope, a promising and successful future,” she said. “I look forward to sharing the great success story of the Bendigo built Bushmaster and to learn firsthand how the Japanese government intend

I look forward to sharing the ... success story to use our Bushmasters. “I am also keen to discuss future export opportunities. “I believe that one of the important roles of being the Federal Member for Bendigo is to act as an ambassador for Bendigo manufacturers.”

“Thales Australia has produced hundreds of Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles for the Australian Defence Force. “This vehicle produced here in Bendigo has saved the lives of our diggers,” she said. “While many Bushmasters have been hit by improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan, there have been no fatalities. “The world-class work being done in Bendigo is being exported to the world, with the UK and the Netherlands also buying Bushmasters. “The Bushmaster is an outstanding vehicle with a proven track record of saving troops’ lives. “The export success of the vehicle is testimony to the hard work of the engineering and design team in Bendigo, who work with the Australian Defence Force and more than 120 Australian companies in the Bushmaster supply chain.”

Remembering a tragedy

A SOMBRE and respectful memorial service will be held this weekend and will remember six Bendigo men who died while prisoners of war. The event will be organised by members of the Post 1975 Veterans Association and is to honour Australian and British servicemen who died at Sandakan and Ranau, North Borneo from 1942 to 1945. The memorial will take place at Sandakan memorial, Strathdale Park, McIvor Highway, on Sunday at 11am. Following the fall of Singapore 1800 Australians of the 8th Division AIF and 750 British troops became prisoners of the Japanese and were transported to Sandakan in British North Borneo, now Sabah, in 1942 to construct an airfield, where 900 died of ill-treatment. By the end of 1944, when Allied forces were within striking distance of Sandakan, the Japanese command ordered the removal of prisoners to Ranau, 265 kilometres away. On January 29, 1945, 470 prisoners, guarded by 500 Japanese marched towards Ranau. Those who were unable to carry on were killed. Only six survived. The second march of 532 prisoners, left

Sandakan on May 29, 1945. On June 26, 183 arrived at Ranau. Seventy five prisoners left Sandakan on the third march, on June 15. None of these survived. Any prisoners left at Sandakan because they were too ill to move, died of starvation or were killed. Out of about 2500 at Sandakan, only six survived. Ping for a faster net

A GROUP pushing for the rollout of the NBN in the Loddon Mallee region wants locals to take an active role in promoting the need for high speed broadband in the community. iLoddon Mallee launched a new campaign this week as part of its ongoing advocacy, with chairman Bruce Winzar calling for local residents and businesses to complete the Department of Communications’ My Broadband online speed test which automatically sends internet speed data to the department. “The level of connectivity in communities is one factor taken into consideration when making decisions on the NBN rollout, and we are interested to find out the true speed of our current broadband connections,” Mr Winzar said. After completing the online speed test, participants are encouraged to post their results on social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “We are encouraging everyone to post their results on social media so we not only gain attention but also allow iLoddon Mallee to develop a database of broadband speed in the region.” Regional Development Australia Loddon Mallee Committee chair Jenny Dawson said the project is a great way to get the community involved in advocating for NBN rollout. “The Bendigo region struggles with poor internet coverage and blackspots,” Ms Dawson said.

Tennis club fears change to courts KENNINGTON Social Tennis Club (KSTC) says it will have to close once South Bendigo Football and Netball Club takes over its courts. President Simon Perrin said there was no future for the tennis club as netball “elitism” had taken priority, leaving the club with only one dedicated court. “On what is being offered at present, there does not appear to be any way we can save the club,” Mr Perrin said. “Our niche in the market is to have court availability in time and space. If that’s taken away from us we will become financially unviable. “The best times of year to play are mild winters and spring, autumn. That’s basically when netball will be holding and using the courts. “If netballers are so relevant to general community fitness – build them their own courts. Do not compromise the fitness attempts of others.” Former Sports Minister Damian Drum announced $100,000 to upgrade the courts to multi-use last October. Council chipped in $215,000 and the local community

gave $35,000 to upgrade the existing courts and put lighting on two courts. For the past 100 years, KSTC has not had a tenancy agreement with the City of Greater Bendigo but has been the sole user-group of the courts. KSTC has about 30 adult members and 10 children, playing on three of five dedicated tennis courts. South Bendigo Football Netball Club director of coaching Peter Tyack said the club had discussed the move with council for about five years. “Council are trying to make it fair and reasonable for everyone to have state-of-the-art facilities for tennis and netball. They are trying to come up with a great scenario for all user groups,” he said. “Senior football was at the reserve for about 80 years before Kennington Football Cub disbanded in the early 1990s. Senior cricket has been there since 1861. “What we need in the community these days is for senior and young people to have the improved facilities to participate in sport, health

and wellbeing activities. “We should be trying to get the best facilities as we can.” Active and healthy communities manager Patrick Jess said it was the position of council and a requirement of state government grant funding to develop multi-use, non exclusive facilities. “With limited resources and demand for facilities far outweighing supply, the city has the responsibility to allocate public funding as efficiently and effectively as possible,” he said. “The existing five courts do not meet modern day standards. Of the five courts, only two have an adequate surface and all five courts do not meet run-off compliance. “The proposed project will result in the KSTC having access to three brand new courts all meeting modern day standards. “Of the three courts, one court will be specifically lined for tennis and will be accessible to the public while netball training or competition is occurring on either of the other two courts, which will be lined for tennis and netball use.”

Money burden adds pressure

In part two of his extended interview with the Bendigo Weekly’s Peter Kennedy, City of Greater Bendigo CEO Craig Niemann explains more about some of the challenges the city faces, his views on the independent review and who should be responsible for fixing our groundwater problems. CITY of Greater Bendigo chief executive officer Craig Niemann confidently asserts cost shifting has become more of a burden upon the City of Greater Bendigo, and something he described as an ongoing pressure. “Grants for library services used to be on a dollar for dollar basis … I think now we are on about 70 per cent and the state is 30 per cent. So yes, we provide a great service and we gave got an improved building and that’s a great outcome, but over time the government contributions to those services has not increased with even inflation at times.” He added that council’s own EBA will have an impact once a rate cap is imposed upon the state’s 79 councils by the state government. “It puts pressure on our ability to grow and as a regional city we want to grow. We’ve got more services to provide, we get developers who bring on more assets and we have to take up responsibilities for new parks and gardens. “Jackass Flat for example, a great bit of open space in their development, but guess who’s going to look after it, in perpetuity effectively. That’s the council, and there’s an ex-

pected standard that we‘ll look after that too.” Mr Niemann said much of the cost associated with the council’s budget for the arts was associated with the Ulumbarra project in the former Bendigo gaol, as well as for the city’s contribution to the extensions to the art gallery. “They were strategic decisions by the council supported by funding from other levels of government have helped us

There’s always the opportunity for council... to wind back build significant community assets and probably regional assets and Ulumbarra will be a fantastic facility to the whole Bendigo and northern Victorian region. “There’s always the opportunity for council, whether it’s arts, roads, parks, whatever it is, there’s always the opportunity for council at budget time to wind back on the amount

of expenditure, the amount of resources that they put into any one of those activities. That’s the challenge because most of the time they’ll want that and the other, and not one or the other.” He said this was often the difficult part of a council budget. “It’s a whole host of different activities that no matter what we change in the community there is going to be a response from the community.” As the council looks to continually update its performance in addressing the findings and recommendations of the independent review, the CEO said he believed the process had helped the organisation think about the way it managed the business. “It was as much probably a review of me and the operations of the organisation versus the operations of the council. “It was a difficult process because I think that’s my job and the council’s job. I am their employee and their job is to make sure I deliver on their expectations. I didn’t think it was broken and I thought at

VISION: Ulumbarra and the Bendigo library. the time and I talked about it at the time, that I thought things were going pretty well and there was clearly some thought there could be efficiencies driven into the organisation and cost savings made.” He said while it would be difficult to quantify the cost benefit of it, there have been some improvements in the way we run the business as a result of the review. “I am really proud of the staff and the way they’ve responded to it. Because it was very much a question of them and how I and they run the business and they all got on board and said let’s support this and make sure we put up all the information that needs to be provided and then respond accordingly to the delivery of the recommendations.

“Some of that’s been hard because it’s been very personal on people, around questioning the performance of their area and really their own performance. They have all been very professional about that and have stood up and said I want to continue to provide the service and I will respond to the recommendations that are in the review.” Aware of the frustrations that sometimes come from within the community, Mr Niemann said the council is fully aware it will never make everyone happy. “Because of the broadness of our service and even in some of the community meetings some people will say they are prepared to pay more, and others will say no, we don’t want to pay more we are paying too much as

it is… no one enjoys paying rates I am sure, but everyone enjoys the services that rates provide.” And finally, on the issue of Bendigo’s ever-present groundwater problem, Mr Niemann is very quick to state his belief that groundwater is a state government responsibility. “Groundwater isn’t a local government responsibility and never has been and never should be,” he said. “It is a real challenge because there needs to be a long term solution found. “There are mining legacy issues around this and I think it’s the state’s responsibility to make sure that there is a long term solution and that it’s funded because I don’t think that should be a local government responsibility.”

Upgrade in store

THERE will be a new look to Bendigo Marketplace this year with a $7 million upgrade planned. Renovations have been designed to improve the overall presentation, look and feel of the shopping centre. Owner ISPT’s general manager retail services Sam Curry said Bendigo Marketplace turns 20 this year. “We believe it needs some work to improve appearances and position it to service the community for years to come,” he said. As part of the facelift, ISPT has introduced new retailers to Bendigo such as Boost Juice and Platypus Shoes. “The new retailers have been well received by locals and we expect to announce some more new brands coming to the Centre later this year,” Mr Curry said.

Clear sign of progress A NEW advertising and signage policy for the City of Greater Bendigo has been formally gazetted by the Minister for Planning. The policy has now been incorporated into the planning scheme to guide the location, scale and type of advertising in the municipality. “The policy gives the advertising industry and the business community confidence in the location, placement and type of signage that is preferred and likely to be approved,” Mayor Peter Cox said. “The policy will help protect the municipality’s historic streetscapes and other sensitive areas while balancing the need for advertising signs that are capable of attracting customers.” The policy was publicly exhibited last year and resulted in 17 submissions, with key issues raised including the scope and application of the policy, enforcement matters and proposed signage restrictions. An independent panel appointed by the Minister for Planning to consider unresolved submissions largely supported the policy as exhibited.

Pop in to be a part of Mary’s show MAGICAL people are wanted to perform in the new Ulumbarra Theatre in a new production of Mary Poppins. The Bendigo Theatre Company (BTC) is looking for Mary, Bert, Jane and Michael, as well as more than 30 further cast members and ensemble players. Auditions are being held on Friday, March 20 and March 21 at the Arts Shed in Allingham Street Bendigo, but there’s an information session on Saturday, March 7. The BTC’s creative team is hoping to make Mary fly for the show, utilising the 26 metre flytower at the new Bendigo theatre.

We would love to see as many creative types as possible “The production will be going through Broadway, the West End and Bendigo’s Ulumbarra this year,”

NEW SHOPS PLANNED FOUR new shops have been proposed for development adjacent to the Maiden Gully Champion’s IGA. Expo links jobs to workers

INCLUSIVE: Mayor Peter Cox. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

JOBSEEKERS will be able to look for work in a one-stop shop at the city’s Jobs Expo next week. The event will be held on Wednesday March 11 at the Bendigo Town Hall to connect locals with employment opportunities. Employment Minister Jacinta Allan will open the inaugural event designed to attract jobseekers with employers and service providers across the region. “The expo will showcase regional employers, employment providers, training organisations, public service institu-

MP fears closures FEDERAL Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters wants the federal government to rule out massive job losses and post office closures in Bendigo and central Victoria. Ms Chesters said she was concerned Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull was considering reforms to Australia Post which would mean the end of everyday delivery of standard mail. “Malcolm Turnbull proposes changes to Australia Post which would not only see the price of stamps skyrocket, but also see delivery times slow right down,” Ms Chesters said. “Mr Turnbull said at least two changes being considered were a ‘two speed’ mail system; $1 stamps for the slower speed of delivery, and whoknows-what for faster or nextday delivery. “I almost fell off my chair. This shocking announcement means Australians will be paying significantly more for a big reduction in service.” Ms Chesters said the changes have the potential to seriously disadvantage Bendigo families, businesses and the economy. “I’m calling on Minister Turnbull to rule out further job losses in Bendigo and central Victoria,” she said. “Right now, Bendigo is booming. We have economic growth. It is a vibrant region

with a proud history and an exciting future. “However, this growth will be under threat if we continue to lose core services. I put Australia Post in the category of core services.” In an opinion piece published online this week, Mr Turnbull said local post offices play an important role in the life of hundreds of country towns throughout Australia, but that the core business of those post offices – letters delivery – was in decline. ‘’As more and more Australians use the Internet, it’s so much quicker and easier to send an email than snail mail.’’ He said Australians sent one billion fewer letters last year than they did in 2008, and as revenue falls Australia Post has little flexibility to cut costs. ‘’The nature of letters delivery is that it costs much the same to send out a mail truck each day, whether it has five or 5000 letters in it… Something has to give.” Mr Turnbull said if the government did nothing, Australia Post would either have to close down or be subsidised by taxpayers to the tune of $6.6 billion over the next decade. He said the government wanted to introduce “sensible” reforms to ensure Australia Post remained viable for future generations.

Pressures add strain to food budget ht for thoug By DIANNE DEMPSEY

“WE see grandparents who don’t go to see their grandchildren at Christmas because they can’t afford to buy them gifts,” Mrs Jenny Elvey, of Bendigo Family and Financial Services says. “We never know what sort of problems will walk in the door. Clients could have lost a job, or suffered an illness. Extra pressure might be caused when the kids go back to school or at Easter time.” Bendigo Family and Financial Services provides financial advice to clients who are struggling and one of the many ways they help families or individuals is to give them access to free food. What this does is take the pressure off the clients for a few weeks while they try and catch up on paying bills. “Our clientelle has increased by about 20 per cent over the past 12 months. ity is quite high,” Mrs Elvey says. “We are one of the few services that offer case-management. If a client is unemployed we look at their Centrelink payments and see if it is the most appropriate one for them. “Other things we can do in the case of job loss is to see if clients have any superannuation entitlements or they might be insured against illness. Some people are simply unaware of these entitlements. “Sometimes it’s a

RedBeard bakery grows for 10th anniversary T

RENTHAM’S historic bakery, RedBeard, has had a reboot over the summer, and recently reopened. With tenth anniversary celebrations planned for May there are wonderful things in store. “We’ve moved to a more sustainable four-day-a-week model,” baker John Reid said. “Our new hours are Friday to Monday, 8am-5pm, and we will be closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. “This new model allows us the down time we have always wanted to prepare for our increasingly busy weekend trade. It also gives us back the family time we need to make sure this business is truly valued and sustainable.” The hours bakers work are almost legendary, and while John’s

brother Al was in partnership it was more manageable. The brothers investigated selling the bakery last year, but in the process, John decided he loved it too much and couldn’t leave. “We’re still looking after our wonderful local producers, suppliers and farmers, and our extraordinary staff, because we want the business to keep thriving,” John’s partner Thais Sansom said. Regulars at the café will know there are particular days that they can buy specialty sourdough breads, and John said that would continue with some changes to the schedule. Regulars may have to plan their visits by checking the website first, at www.redbeardbakery.com.au

WELCOME ALL: The Mad Hatter is ready for the big weekend.

Family food activities key to picnic success A

RANGE of children’s activities are on the program for the March 15 Food Fossickers Picnic with the Mad Hatter event, designed to encourage children to participate in healthy food preparation and exploring the Botanic gardens. Cooking classes, garden treasure hunts, active sports and art classes will all be on the program, allowing junior ticket holders to touch, taste, read, learn and be creative while parents relax and enjoy some of the region’s best produce and beverages available.

Food Fossickers vice president and activity coordinator Lisa Renato said a lot of consideration had been taken to create the correct types of events that were suitable to the philosophy of the regional showcase. “We have partnered with local businesses to offer fun and educational activities, for example Dymocks Bendigo are working with Sonia Anthony from local restaurant Masons to provide cooking classes, where participants will find the vegetables in the garden, cook a recipe from a kids cooking book

and be able to take the book home too,” Lisa said. “Peppergreen Farms will encourage children to get their hands dirty by planting vegetables, Bendigo Wholefoods have created a garden treasure hunt and The Schaller Studio will encourage them to be creative with art sessions and face painting.” Sporting activities will again include old fashioned fun, with jumping sacks, egg and spoon races and team sports. “The event is shaping up to be even bigger and better than last year, music from local band The Blurbs

A FISH OUT OF WATER

and the BSE College band are back again too,” Lisa said. “We have 11 different Bendigo and Heathcote wineries, craft beer from Tooborac Brewery, cider and apple juice from Harcourt Valley, and Custom Coffee have two machines running.” Tickets to the event are $12 each, or $45 for a family pass for two adults and two children online, available from Bendigo Tourism. All tickets on the gate are $15 each, and are subject to availability as last year’s event was sold out in advance.

No penalty needed There is something wrong in our so called egalitarian, tolerant and welcoming community/council. It seems it is so vehemently opposed to the mistreatment and abuse of women that it would try to hang and quarter a woman who speaks out about protecting young girls. These girls are unable to protect themselves, female genital mutilation is abhorrent. What is worse is some councillors-and council staff and local media are more interested in protecting Bendigo’s image than addressing the real issue which is the FGM of young girls. Where is the media and council’s outrage at this treatment of young girls? There is something seriously wrong that we have stooped so low as to value the city’s image as more important than the protection, welfare and wellbeing of young girls. It is wrong that we are so intimidated and fearful of offending that we apparently condone and support FGM. We want to see this practice stopped. Is the City of Greater Bendigo’s human rights charter designed to prevent legitimate discussion and comment about such things as the abhorrent FGM practice on the grounds that it might offend? If so, shame on it. In any case, Cr Elise Chapman’s rights should be protected too. Elise has not overstepped her democratic rights, her comments were not racist. There are federal laws which would over-ride any council policies or local laws. There should be no penalty. Colin Burns, Strathfieldsaye

Mutilation not condoned The issue of female genital mutilation (FGM) has been around for many years now and has been linked quite erroneously with Islamic beliefs and practice. However, FGM is a cultural practice that began appearing in historical texts dating from 450BC. It predates the Qur’an and the Bible, has no basis in any religious text and is therefore not based on religious observance. Despite this, the abhorrent practice has been transmitted through generations and is still

practiced in some communities in Africa, the Middle East and the sub-continent, despite it being illegal in those countries. Sadly, people have misconstrued FGM with Islam because some Muslim women continue to be victims of this tradition and this misconception has continued to be propagated through the media and dubious online sources. Bendigo Islamic Association confirms unequivocally that Islam, Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders in Australia do not condone, promote or accept FGM as a religious custom. FGM became more relevant in Australia, due to the increasing immigration and settlement of women who underwent FGM in their countries of origin when they were children. Widespread grassroots education programs have been conducted in Australia since the early 1990s to educate newly arrived communities about the negative consequences of FGM. In Victoria FGM falls under the Crimes (Femal Genital Mutilation) Act 1996 and the Children, Youth and Families Act (2005). The contention that if a mosque were to be built in this area it would naturally attract Muslims who would then practice FGM is an ignorant and inflammatory statement. We at Bendigo Islamic Association condemn the recent distribution of offensive and disturbing material about FGM and linking this to Muslims. The Muslims of Bendigo are an important part of the broader community, contributing positively to the enrichment of our city. The Muslim community is proud of the diverse and eclectic nature of Bendigo and hopes that any individual attempt to derail the harmony and social cohesiveness of the city should be strongly condemned. We applaud the CEO of City of Greater Bendigo Council’s statement in support of community harmony distancing itself from the comments of one individual. This is a time for promoting friendship and mutual respect and not to create more animosity and fear based on ignorance. We look forward to a positive and prosperous future in Bendigo for all of its diverse and strong community. Dr Shaker Issa, president – Bendigo Islamic Association

It’s not just a pool It is quite obvious some councillors and all of the critics of the proposed Aquatic Centre in Kangaroo Flat don’t understand what it is all about. Ballarat does, and in 2010 added a hydrotherapy pool to its complex, in April 2015 it will open a 50 metre pool alongside its existing 25 metre one. It has quite a few other facilities as well, and is adding a further 100 spaces to its car park. Perhaps they read the federal government reports on the health of the nation. Twenty-eight per cent of all Australians have one of the following disabilities; osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, or one of many chronic back ailments. Twenty-five per cent of adults and six per cent of our children are obese and a further 35 per cent of adults and 19 per cent of children are overweight. They would also be aware that mainstream exercise is not suitable for a large number of those suffering these complaints and looked at the benefits of aquatic exercise. The best thing is they have done something about it, not cried poor and certainly not said to these people “you are still well down the list”, the same as it’s been for hundreds of years.

The White Hills Botanical Gardens is a great project but it’s surely not a priority over people’s health and wellbeing. These people pay their rates and support all the other facilities in Bendigo which they can’t use, and the council is not interested in building something which benefits both them and the wider community. I would ask the council if you can’t build it now with a $15 million handout and the current low interest rates, when will you build it? Ivan J Bowman, Kangaroo Flat

Clean up a winner Remembrance Parks – Central Victoria would like to thank all community members who volunteered their valuable time and participated in the Clean up our Cemeteries Day. They started the long-term process of cleaning up our cemeteries and transforming them into community parklands. Close to 100 community members attended and lent a hand in cleaning Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and White Hills Remembrance Parks. For our second Clean up our Cemeteries Day we couldn’t have been happier with the turn out and dedication shown by the community. This initiative will continue into the future and actively supports our longer-term vision of site beautification and transforming our sites into community parklands. Could do better IT has been a week many of us would rather forget, and one where some people who really should know better didn’t and consequently got it oh so wrong. Social media has been reduced to a vacuous farce with the he said she said garbage in the aftermath of the now infamous, and plainly wrong, Elise Chapman tweet about female genital mutilation and the accompanying graphic image. There wasn’t much social about that tweet, or about much of the avalanche that followed from both sides of the argument – that’s if there can be two sides to the argument about FGM. Midst all the white noise that has circulated online in the aftermath, one thing emerges. There are no winners from all this. Equally, Cr Chapman’s tweet and said accompanying image should have been withdrawn, but that became impossible once her Twitter account was temporarily suspended. We all need to accept ownership and responsibility for what we choose to tweet, post and/or publish. In the modern world, to a casual observer there’s very little difference between the various media medi-

Editorial Comment ums, but at least in most newspaper organisations and mainstream media outlets there are processes in place to filter what is written before it is published or broadcast. The carnage from this unsavoury incident is not confined to any one person, and others who have ventured into the debate have not always accounted of themselves well. So to anyone thinking about posting anything about anyone, please think before you do so. Always. And for what it’s worth, we believe the City of Greater Bendigo’s response to this whole sad and sorry saga has been awkward and clumsy at best. Armed with the knowledge that there was so much build up and anticipation about what the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting between mayor Peter Cox and Cr Chapman would be when it was to be announced at Wednesday’s meeting, we instead learned only that there was in fact no decision and that this

was a matter all councillors needed to have input on. That should have been apparent to the councillors from day one. The events of Wednesday night’s council meeting at times resembled a farce and did nothing to enhance our city’s reputation. Sections of the gallery showed little or no respect for the processes of the meeting as their frustrations threatened to boil over. Sadly, this isn’t the first time this has happened, and equally sadly, it’s likely not to be the last. It’s now 12 days since Cr Chapman’s tweet was sent to a local resident whose only apparent crime was to be a supporter of the proposal to establish a mosque in Bendigo. All this only heightens the need for councillors to react swiftly, decisively and fairly. Social media happens in an instant, but its impacts can last much longer. The damage starts as soon as the post first appears, and until it’s satisfactorily addressed, it continues to reverberate throughout the community. The journey from when someone thinks to when someone tweets or posts is short, and that often means stuff is published online that quite frankly shouldn’t be.

RESPECT is a word that can only be demonstrated by one’s behaviour. This is behaviour we teach children from an early age: respect each other as you wish to be respected yourself. I believe it is why some many of us have been left angry and saddened by the actions of one of our elected representatives in the past fortnight. Respect for each other has been broken. From the outset it is very important to note Councillor Elise Chapman’s views are not based on facts. Genital mutilation is against state and federal government laws and, like any act of physical and family violence, it should be reported to the police.

Respect is a word that features in our national citizenship ceremonies. There is great respect for the values which bind us together as a nation. During the City of Greater Bendigo ceremonies, our mayor reads the following to the audience: “Australia has a commitment to various values and institutions”.

right to express your cultural heritage and beliefs, coupled with a responsibility to accept the rights of others to express their heritage and beliefs’. As one of our community’s elected representatives, I am proud to stand up for these values. They define who we are as a nation and as a community.

There is great respect for the values which bind us together as a nation. These include parliamentary democracy, equality before the law, freedom of the individual, freedom of speech and religion, equality between men and women, and equality of opportunity for all. Citizenship also brings civil and social rights—the

Freedom of expression and free speech are vital to democracy. However, I believe the use of explicit images which insult and humiliate those in favour of building a mosque here in Bendigo over-stepped the line. Respect for the recipi-

ent of the tweet has been broken. This was not the behaviour we expect from our elected representatives. I believe when you are elected you take on certain responsibilities, including the responsibility speak publicly for this town. We are ambassadors for Bendigo. I believe our elected representatives need to both listen to our community’s concerns and aspirations, and also take responsibility for leading the community. It is an honour and a privilege to be elected to represented this great community. We live in a city that celebrates cultural diversity in many positive and inclusive ways. Most importantly we respect one another.

The program aims to assist community groups to undertake a wide range of activities that contribute to the social, educational, recreational and environmental aspects of local communities. dear dotty...

Porkers push patience More escaped pigs lead to an early morning frenzy on the farm

Dear Rebecca, Break their fingers.

I

T all started with Dubby in Scotland. Dubby was a massive porker who was bought as a piglet for eating purposes, but the owners could not bring themselves to go through with it. Lucy our horse lived on the farm with Dubby, Lucy being a paying guest. Well we paid, but you know what I mean. Lucy did not approve of Dubby. She was a grumpy old sow at the best of times, even refusing to leave her sty on a bad day. Lucy was wide eyed at the sight of Dubby, and many a time the long-suffering Mrs Kendall was nearly unseated when Dubby was in view. When it came for Lucy to leave Scotland, she stamped on a cockerel for good measure. I think she imagined it was Dubby. Not a fan of pigs. This past Monday morning Mrs K yelled at me in her delicate way something about piglet. Piglet is one of our pet sheep’s name, so I assumed something was adrift.

Dear Dotty I use my computer at home for work and it is very frustrating because every time I turn my back one of my children is using it and they generally muck things up. It doesn’t matter what I threaten them with, they keep on doing it. Any ideas? Rebecca

Dear Dotty, I have a problem with flatulence. I sometimes break wind in a fairly small office and I don’t know whether I should ‘fess up or not, it can be most embarrassing. Helen

Turns out we had a whole litter of pink porkers running around the horse paddock with Zip the kelpie trying to round up the hairless sheep. I was amazed how fast the mobile bacon was moving, as Mrs K put it, “they were going full boar.” It seems pigs don’t take to being rounded up and turned on Zip, he was barking like a mad thing, something he never does when we want him to round up sheep. Then the tables turned and the pigs started rounding up Zip. By this time things were running a bit late, as I was due at work, but I think it must be

one of my better excuses for being late. It was quite amusing until the ham with a plan headed towards the horses. Lucy flared up as memories of her days in the Highlands came flooding back, and thoughts of Dubby came to the fore. Cilla Gorilla the red mare saw a reason for some drama, and started prancing, and Fatso the gelding sort of joined in with all the fuss. So at this point we had Kelpie chasing seven piglets, who in turn were stirring up the horses who were running in circles and making a fuss. Add to this the bellow-

ing of Mrs K who was trying to calm Zip down. But he’s a young kelpie and this was just too much fun. In the end I decided to give up and go to work. Bit late, sorry team. Found out the owner was my neighbour, and the piglets seem to be quite good at escaping. In jest I suggested I would like one, thinking of future expansion of the farm animals, and the neighbour said they were the right size for the spit. Not what I had in mind, but I am sure Lucy would do the honours if need be.

Dear Helen, I think it depends on what type of flatulence we’re talking about here. There are basically three types: The Silent Killer. The Slow Gurgler and the Triumphant Blast. Obviously you are off the hook with the Silent Killer, it may be very smelly but no one can be sure of the source. The Slow Gurgler is a tough one because it can go on for a long time, giving everyone an opportunity to pin you down. What I suggest is that instead of sitting

A

BRAND NEW SHOW

‘Once Upon A Time’

MONDAY 16 MARCH Strathdale Community Centre Bendigo

ON THE ROAD: Kingswood are playing the Black Swan on Thursday.

Lion King tells tale of the circle of life

LOUD, singing baboon arrives on stage. She, Rafiki, knows the wonders of the world and has the power to understand the delicate circle of life. But she speaks another language, leaving the audience bamboozled at her tongue and laughter erupts. Watching in awe, the majestic and breathtaking beauty of the African savannah arrives on the Regent Theatre’s stage. The lights have dimmed, the orchestra sounds, The Lion King takes command. Standing on the edge of Pride Rock, Mufasa raises his only son Simba and presents him to the herds. This is where the circle of life begins and ends. Herds of African animals arrive on stage, performers veiled with wooden masked and costumes true to the animal’s movements. The performance follows Disney’s tale of

Mufasa, the leader of the lion pack in charge of Pride Rock, his brother Scar furious about Simba’s birth and ascension to the throne. The story takes an eerily dark and scary turn when Scar kills his brother. He blames Simba for Mufasa’s death and tells his nephew, Simba, to leave and never return. Scar takes the throne. With a pack of unsuspecting friends, a Meerkat and Warthog, Timon and Pumbaa, Simba travels the country but longs to finds his real home. Nala, his betrothed lover, finds him while on the hunt for a new, lush homeland as Pride Rock is scarce and dry under Scar’s reign. Simba must find the strength to return to Pride Rock and make things right. Based on the Christian belief in God and his son Jesus Christ, the stage performance highlights the spiritual connection with faultless staging and music. Reliving childhood memories of Disney’s The Lion King, it takes an adult-turn with a dark and honest look at the true circle of life. Favourite rides around Bendigo G

RAB your bike and cycling mates and tick off these favourite local rides. Short rides Start at the north end of Lake Weeroona near the rowing sheds and cross Weeroona Avenue to head down the Bendigo Creek trail. It’s a slightly downhill, fully sealed five kilometres to Howard Street Epsom. Call into the White Hills Botanical Gardens for a break (toilets available) on the way. This is a great ride for kids or someone who hasn’t ridden a bike for a while. Or turn right just after the start of the Bendigo Creek trail and follow the signs to the O’Keefe Rail Trail. Cross over Napier Street and Bob Street, head through the railway tunnel and out onto the gravel trail.

RIDING HIGH: Axedale offers a scenic option on your bike.

It will soon take you to Heathcote, but you could turn at McIvor Highway and head back for a 12km ride. Medium rides If you haven’t already grabbed a free local rides brochure from the Visitor Information Centre in Pall Mall now is the time. It gives you details of medium length road rides throughout our beautiful region. Or grab a cycling mate and head out past the One Tree Hotel in Spring Gully, turn left down Tannery Lane, then right into Strathfieldsaye. Grab a coffee then head across to Junortoun, pick up the

Long rides You don’t need to join organised rides to cycle up to or over 100km. Although they can be great fun, you can organise your own small group and make up your own track. A couple of mates and I rode this the other day.

FOR the second year in succession, a group of Bendigo cyclists has forked out its own money to sponsor a team in Sunday night’s prestigious Madison. The hard core group of TASR riders include more than two dozen local cycling enthusiasts who have once again jumped at the chance to support their chosen sport. TASR spokesman David Bakes said the group, which includes senior managers and owners of some of Bendigo’s leading businesses, were not as much interested in the corporate promotion of any of their businesses as they were in supporting something as iconic as the Madison. “Cycling is a big part of our lives, it’s a big part of this city, and the Madison is internationally regarded as one of the premier events of its type in the world.”

We headed out to Spring Gully, through to Sedgwick, turned right up the North Harcourt Road, down through Harcourt and turned right into Golden Point Road at the infamous Faraday school. This took us on a beautiful downhill road to Chewton and into Castlemaine where we breakfasted in one of the many great coffee shops. Next stop Maldon for another coffee and back to Bendigo after a great morning’s ride. Cycling with mates is great for your physical and mental health and if you’re not riding regularly you’re missing out on its many benefits. – Geoff O’Sullivan

NE of the key features of almost any business is to be seen by the public, most importantly in a positive light. The mediums available in the early 20th century were as mentioned previously mostly in the print realm, however just as today businesses depend on sympathetic word of mouth to be a vehicle of promotion. Window shopping was a very good means of not only displaying the wares which were on offer but could act as an enticement for someone to make a purchase, that being the ultimate goal of the commercial operation. Appealing to many senses was considered better, when creating a commercial display. Prescott and Dawe in Bendigo were at the forefront in their efforts to entice sales through their displays. They having the two street frontages as well as show windows and within the shop’s interior there was an abundance of display space. Charles M Dawe had his business at heart, but importantly also Bendigo at large, through his involvement in diverse organisations. By the mid 1930s as slowly the country was crawling its way out of the Great Depression there were many ways in which the economy, especially at a more local level, came to play in the promotion of the type of goods being recommended

for purchase. To advance the economic welfare of the country, “Made in Australia” goods were at all times being brought to the fore. In Bendigo competitions were held between the many diverse businesses as to which one could create the best display of Australian made goods. These “made in Australia” displays were greatly encouraged by H G Lamb, who was the overall organiser of the Made in Australia Council. Bendigo took to these competitive efforts to promote Australian made goods with gusto. W Jeffrey, the grocer, had a magnificent display of all Australian foods, dried, tinned and fresh, the centre piece being a large colourful Australian Coat of Arms. G J Coles of Mitchell Street featured items of clothing, crockery, and a huge range of electroplated ware. Some businesses brought in professional window dressers in order to show their goods in the most advantageous manner, such as that of Chisholm’s Pharmacy. Mr Chisholm had managed to secure the services of a Melbourne man, Ray Darby, and he made the View Street shop window into a visual feast. In this period there were a multitude of Australian manufacturers, thanks largely to tariffs. George White was a jeweller of Pall Mall and they

had a large map of Australia as the centre piece of their display of goods such as, accruements for smokers, then they also had Bryant and May made matches as a necessary addition. Mr White also had silverware, shaving requisites and literally dozens of other items all made in this country. George White’s business was actually owned by Prescott and Dawe. Having another outlet for goods of a slightly different character made good business sense to Mr Dawe. Another business that carried the name White, (R White) displayed an amazing variety of footwear. Much of the footwear was manufactured at Abbottsford and Collingwood. Boots were in great demand for men, slippers, dancing pumps, shoes of all kinds, and becoming more popular, sandshoes all featured. Surprisingly all this foot-

wear was made in Australia, but as pointed out being protected by tariffs. Tens of thousands of women and men worked in the footwear manufacturing trade. Was there anything made in Bendigo that may have been promoted as an additional feature? Well, Prescott and Dawe had the answer, as Charles Dawe was one of the principals behind the Swiss Watchcase Manufacturing Company, situated on the south side of Hargreaves Street between Edwards and Wattle streets. Watches and watch cases were being supplied to jewellers throughout the country. Bendigo-made tea trays of beautiful Australian polished timbers with nickel plated edge strips and handles, silverware as described by Mr Dawe were the equal to any imported article. A plethora of other goods were on display.

Major national art award for Indigenous artists Indigenous artists from Northern Victoria, including Bendigo, are being encouraged to enter the 2015 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA). The award recognises the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and promotes an appreciation and understanding of the quality and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art throughout Australia, with support from principal sponsor Telstra. Telstra area general manager for northern Victoria and Sunraysia, Steve Tinker, said this is one of Telstra’s most significant sponsorships. The categories for the 2015 Telstra NATSIAA are: Major Award - $50,000; General Painting Award - $5,000; Bark Painting Award - $5,000; Work on Paper Award - $5,000; Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial Award - $5,000; Youth Award $5,000. Life inside prison walls The Barwon Interviews by artist Natasha Carrington is a filmic representation of life inside prison walls. In this experience, first recorded on site at Barwon Prison, twelve prisoners present a complex narrative of individual agency, emotional tension and subversion towards the correctional system. The exhibition will be running at the La Trobe University Visual Arts until April 12.

RAW arts awards The City of Greater Bendigo is calling for entries from talented young Greater Bendigo artists for the 2015 RAW Arts Awards. Fired up for a battle

MORE than 2500 people will flock to Weeroona Oval this weekend for the final round of the Victorian Urban Fire Brigade Championships. The 2015 finale will see crews from Victoria, Western Australia and a brigade from New Zealand competing at the Na-

pier Street track. Around 1000 competitors will be in action, with spectators, officials and the general public expected to add plenty of life to what is already a huge weekend of sport in Bendigo. Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley will be in attendance, as will

fire chiefs from Victoria, WA, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand. Bendigo has yet again been chosen to host the event, due to its outstanding facilities, the popular location of the venue and the central location. Kangaroo Flat won the title on home soil in 2014 and will be looking

to continue their success this year. Flat speedster Jackson Dargaville is the four-time defending winner of the ladder race, and will go into this year’s event as the unbackable favourite. All brigades competing at the championships will be marching in the traditional torchlight competition parade

Keating jumps on BENDIGO-BASED jockey John Keating knows how lucky he is to be back in the saddle after a race fall just over 12 months ago, and is taking steps to help those who haven’t been so fortunate. Keating is taking his family along with him in the 4Tracks4Kids walk on Monday to raise money to support those riders whose recovery hasn’t been so bright. Heading from Sandown Racecourse, to Caulfield, Flemington and then finishing at Moonee Valley, the walk is an annual fundraiser.

Keating, along with partner Desiree Pettit, and youngest son, Daniel, will be part of the National Jockeys Trust team, whose fundraising goal is $10,000. “The outcome of my fall was ultimately positive but I know plenty of riders who haven’t been so fortunate, and have seen the struggles faced by families of jockeys who lost their lives in race falls,” Keating said. “While there’s insurance and so on, there are always gaps and support needed longer term, and the NJT do a terrific job of making sure those gaps are covered.”

through the streets of Bendigo on Saturday night. The Parade starts at 8.30pm in McLaren Street and continues to Mundy, Mollison, Williamson Streets, Lyttleton Terrace and finishes in Hopetoun Street at the rear of the Bendigo Fire Station. Entry to the championships is free across the weekend.

MAIDEN GULLY is set to end its season on a high, after taking first innings points in its final round EVCA clash with Emu Creek. The Gully showed the improvement it has made in the latter half of the season after being sent into bat, making 152 before ripping through the Emus lineup for 115. Brett Haw (53) and Lachlan Mickan (44) made the bulk of the runs for Gully, while Michael Checkley took 5/23 for Emu Creek. With skipper Daniel Chamberlain absent, Shane Hamilton and Leigh Byrne tried to pick up the slack with 32 and 25 respectively, but four big wickets from Haw ensured Gully would have a huge advantage searching for its first win of the season. Maiden Gully can still be upset on day two, with a reverse outright loss still a possibility. At Marong Links Oval, United star Andrew Collins fell 17 runs short of his second double century of the year, crafting 183 as the Tigers compiled 6/303 from 65 overs against Marong. Collins belted 13 fours and seven sixes in the knock, that came seven weeks after making 211 against Axe Creek. Fellow opener Josh White chipped in with a quickfire 52, and Amdrew Brown took two wickets for the Panthers. In reply, Marong went to stumps at 0/7 from seven overs. Sedgwick is another finals side that finds itself in trouble after a rampant Spring Gully attack ripped through the Rams’ formidable batting order for just 109. Corey Jones (36) and Steven Stroobants (32) top scored for the vistors, as Saheed Akolade created havoc for the batsmen taking 5/16. Spring Gully will resume the run chase at 4/58, with Andrew Renato and Adrian Hicks at the crease. In the other two round 11 matches, West Bendigo will chase 266 for victory against Golden Gully, while Mandurang and Axe Creek will play in a one-day game after there was no play on day one.

Rivals chase pennant

LUCKY: John Keating.

TRADITIONAL rivals Bendigo and Bendigo East will square off on Sunday in the Bendigo Bowls division one pennant grand final. Bendigo East won through to the decider after a thrilling one shot win over minor premiers Eaglehawk last week. Tied at 90 apiece going into the last end, the rinks of East’s Brad Holland and Eaglehawk’s Simon Carter would have the

final say on who progressed to the grand final. Despite going down 27-21 overall, Holland’s rink picked up the vital shot to give East a 91-90 victory and send them through to a fifth grand final in six years. They will meet Bendigo in the decider, the 2013 winners looking to make it two flag years out of the past three.

The division one pennant grand final will be played from 1.30 at South Bendigo Bowling Club’s Sherman green. The midweek pennant division one grand final will also be held on Sunday morning at South Bendigo, with Bendigo East taking on Inglewood. The division two to nine weekend pennant grand finals will be played on Saturday.

All eyes on the Madison By JOEL PETERSON

INTERNATIONAL cycling stars and locals alike will take to the Tom Flood Sports Centre velodrome on Sunday night to do battle in the 44th McCaig Daikin Bendigo International Madison. A star-studded field will line up in the 200-lap epic, including past winners Christian Grassman and Leif Lampater and longtime UCI WorldTour rider Graeme Brown, who will team with Sam Welsford. Also in with a big chance of the title are defending champions Roy Pieters and hometown hero Sam Crome, and the all-star duo of Glenn O’Shea and Jack Bobridge. O’Shea is a two-time winner of the event staged on his home track and teams with Bobridge, one of Australia’s most accomplished cyclists on road and track. The pair returned this week from Europe after the UCI World Championships and London Revolution series, and O’Shea said he is feeling in good form after a busy start to the year. “I think we are both a bit tired after the travel back from Europe, but I’m feeling pretty good,” he said. “I was a little disappointed with how I rode at the worlds, and the last couple of times here in the Madison I haven’t been able to crack it for a win.

“It’s always great to be back, I grew up watching this race, but it has been a while since I last won (in 2009). “I’d love to make it a third win on Sunday. I rode the madison with Jack at worlds and finished seventh but these are tough races and anything can happen.” Bobridge is looking forward to racing in Bendigo for the second time, after first racing in the carnival as a 16-year-old. “It’s a great event, I think it rates really well internationally and it has been a fair while since I have been back, but I am really looking forward to it,” Bobridge, who will team with O’Shea on the road for Budget Forklifts this year, said on Wednesday. “This is the last event on the calendar before we head back into the road side of things, and it will be great to ride with Glenn on his home track.” Crome, the 21-year-old Bendigo local and defending winner, is hopeful of defending the title but knows the competition will be extremely stiff. “My preparation has been good, I have been doing a fair bit of club racing on Thursday nights and I have had a bit of a break since riding at the nationals in January,” Crome said at Tuesday’s carnival launch. “I am feeling good and Roy has just come off of worlds in Paris, it

criteriums tonight. Saturday will see the Black Pearl night held in recognition of International Women’s Day, before Sunday is capped off by the Madison as the carnival’s finale.

NOT only is there action aplenty on the Tom Flood Sports Centre velodrome, but some of Victoria’s best sprinters will compete across the madison carnival in an array of high quality athletics events. The athletics form an integral part of the carnival, and will begin with the track racing on Thursday night. The showpiece event this year is the black opal 400-metre race on Sunday night, with Luke Stephens and Stephen Baird running off scratch in the prestigious event. The women’s 400m black pearl will feature the likes of Bendigo’s Sophie Taylor contending for a home town victory, while Maryborough Highland Gift winner Joel Bee will headline the 120m Bendigo Thousand. Bendigo International Madison organiser Rik McCaig said the athletics program had been strengthened in recent years. An increase in prizemoney in the black opal event, and quality fields, ensured another great athletics program this year. “There have been great entries for the athletics this year, we had a few light-on years there but we are constantly talking with the Victorian Athletics League to keep improving what we do,” he said. “We aren’t the Stawell carnival, we don’t try to be like that, and we are really trying to make our own way in that regard. “I think our 400m will really be able to build into a well recognised event, and we want to keep building all our athletics events because they are great for our carnival.” The backmarkers and frontmarkers mile events, women’s 120m, backmarkers 800m, Richard Kitt Memorial 1500m and Sally Conroy Memorial 200m round out the athletics program for the weekend.

SOLID START: Tayla Evans is hoping to move up the podium. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN BENDIGO’s Tayla Evans is hoping a busy start to 2015 will pay dividends when she lines up during this weekend’s Madison carnival. Evans joined the Bicycle Superstore team for this year’s National Road Series after a strong 2014, which included a third in last year’s Bendigo Women’s madison. After starting the year on the road, Evans is riding A-Grade in the Bendigo District Cycling Club’s summer track races, and is relishing the opportunity to compete on home soil this weekend in the re-introduced RACV Women’s criterium and third annual Women’s madison. “It is great, I love this time of year when the Madison rolls around, it is such an exciting time for cycling in Ben-

digo,” she said at Tuesday’s carnival launch. “I grew up with these events, and to be riding in them now with people cheering for you is an awesome feeling. It’s a huge buzz coming back here to ride, I look forward to it every year.” Evans began her track cycling career on the iconic Tom Flood Sports Centre track, and will once again be aiming for the podium in the Women’s madison on Saturday night with teammate Hayley Jones. Friday night’s criterium precedes that, a race in which national road champion Peta Mullens will enter as a clear favourite. “Criteriums are my favourite race on the road, but I think Peta will be strong and

I will be just trying to follow her wheel for a lot of it,” Evans said. She and Jones will have to contend with a strong field including the likes of track world champion Macey Stewart. “We have a lot of the Bicycle Superstore girls coming for the weekend, so I’m sure there will be some competition among us,” she said. “It will be a really tough race, but having ridden a few of them now hopefully it goes our way and we can have a good finish on Saturday night. I wouldn’t mind moving up a couple of steps on the podium.” The Innes Motors Honda-backed Women’s Madison is the showpiece event on Saturday night.

The GAME PLAN SERIES is a series of five FREE workshops, specifically for all sporting club volunteers, administrators and interested members, presented by experts in sporting administration. Dynasty dream alive By JOEL PETERSON

BERNIE Harrower’s aim has long been to make the Bendigo Spirit a basketball dynasty. After two consecutive championships, the Spirit has become a true league powerhouse, and could cement its place in Women’s National Basketball League history this weekend. Heading into a third straight WNBL decider in Townsville on Sunday, the Spirit could become just the third team in league history to win a hat trick of championship trophies. But a dogged Townsville team, which has gone down in the decider the last two years to Bendigo, is keyed in on stopping the Spirit and making history of its own. Last time they met, the Fire comprehensively beat Bendigo by

19 points in what was a dominating display on its home floor. The odds are with the Fire – who will host the game, coming off of a week’s rest and after finishing two games clear on top of the ladder – but the Spirit heads north with no sense of trepidation.

We are certainly not going up there to lose Instead, according to coach Bernie Harrower, the feeling among the team is one of determination. “They have been the best side all year, and they deserve to be favourites going in,” he said. “We were embarrassed by them two weeks ago, and I thought last week’s win over Sydney was a good bounce back

ter start than last time and try to put them on the back foot.” Bendigo has to deal with a different build up to the game this year after hosting the past two deciders. Harrower put the pressure back on Townsville this week, saying the pressure of a home grand final could potentially overwhelm the Fire.

finals take the pressure up a notch. “We feel we have no pressure on us. We have won the last two, so if we lose our record of 2-1 is not too bad. If they lose, 0-3 from three grand finals is not as good. “We will throw everything we have at them. We certainly are not going up there to lose.” While Townsville’s

confidence will be skyhigh going in, Harrower said his side still believed that it has what it takes to bring the WNBL trophy back to Bendigo. “We need to come out, and have everyone contribute. We have won our last two championships by everyone scoring, everyone bringing energy and everyone playing great defence,” he said. “We have never been the best side on paper, we have won because we were the best at playing together and maximising the talent we have. “It will take that kind of effort on Sunday, but if we put it all together there is no reason we can’t make it three in a row.” Sunday’s WNBL grand final tips off at 3pm at Townsville RSL Stadium, and is broadcast live on ABC TV.

TOWNSVILLE has a chance to make history of its own with a maiden WNBL title, and retiring captain Rachel McCully is determined not to let the opportunity slip once again. McCully, a league legend and two-time Robyn Maher award winner as the WNBL defensive player of the year, will play her 324th and final game on Sunday afternoon. To do that, nothing but a win on Sunday will suffice, But despite thumping Bendigo in the major semi-final, McCully says there is no complacency among the Townsville side. “I don’t think much can be read into it, obviously it’s fantastic to get that win and get that home court advantage for the grand final,” she told the club’s website this week. “But Sunday’s going to be a very different game and we know that the people who missed out on playing quite well for Bendigo are going to step up again this weekend. “They have got some real depth and absolute talent that we know were going to have to shut people down. “We can’t really rest on what we did two weeks ago because Sunday is a completely different ball game altogether.” Townsville finished top of the table with a 17-5 record, and McCully played a big part in that during the season. One of three Fire players who has been a part of the side’s two consecutive grand final losses to Bendigo, there is no shortage of motivation to win that elusive championship. Adding to that, McCully celebrated her 33rd birthday on Thursday, making the possible reward twice as enticing. There is little doubt she would have more to offer after this year if she were to play on, but the Fire’s skipper wants to go out on top of her game and on top of the competition. “I’m just trying to keep everything in check and make sure I keep this week as normal as possible,” she said. “To have the opportunity to play my final game in a grand final and in front of a home crowd is special in itself. “But to get that win would be the real icing on the cake and a really fairytale finish, which is not what a lot of people get.”
