JOBS JUGGLE Photo: BILL CONROY

By CHRISTINE McGINN

A NEW federal government jobs employment service is expected to leave 40 local CVGT Australia workers without a job. The not-for-profit organisation has lost nine Victorian contracts to deliver the former federal government’s employment and jobseeking program, Job Services Australia

Change puts 40 Bendigo roles on the line

(JSA). But CVGT picked up three employment provider contracts, two in Tasmania and one in Goulburn/Murray, under the new federal government’s jobactive program. They also scored two Workskil Australia contracts. A concerned employee, who

wished to remain anonymous, said the organisation’s Disability Employment Services (DES) program was “plagued with problems”. CVGT lost its Barwon DES contract last year due to “poor performance”. It is believed CVGT also lost the

Work for the Dole program in the Barwon region tender process. The employee said the loss of contracts across the state will affect CVGT’s revenue and could affect their ability to deliver services. The organisation is also believed to have restructured in 2012

and 2013 with about 50 jobs lost during the process. More than 300 people are currently employed across their nation-wide locations with its headquarters based in Bendigo. The JSA contracts expire in June and with federal government‘s new employment service system, jobactive, starting on July 1.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Low rates benefit buyers MANAGING Director of DCK Robert Ketterer said that Tuesday’s decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia to maintain the current interest rate would have positive implications for buyers interested in the Bendigo housing market. The RBA announced it would be leaving the interest rates unchanged at 2.25 per cent for the second month in a row. While general expectations were that the interest rate would be decreased, they may well be cut at the next RBA meeting in May. “The low interest rate makes properties very affordable at the moment,” Mr Ketterer said. “It is a very good time to get into the market. “I wonder if some people are holding back however, waiting for another rate drop. It was widely tipped that we will get another rate drop on Tuesday but this didn’t happen.” Mr Ketterer added that the present low interest rate of 2.25 per cent is attracting many investors, particularly those people with money in the bank. “In the month of May one third of the sale of houses was from investors in Bendigo which was a substantial increase,” he said. Mr Ketterer advised punters that if they wait for a further decrease from the RBA before buy-

If the interest rates do drop again in May, they can take advantage of that as well.

“This strong interest in the housing market has also been brought on by a lack of confidence in the share market which has currently lost its appeal for investors.” He added that a further incentive to invest in housing was that Bendigo doesn’t have the same peaks and troughs of the

more buoyant but volatile Sydney and Melbourne markets. “The current Bendigo housing market represents a safe and conservative investment opportunity. “And there is also the fact that you can service your housing loan at about the same rate as you would be paying rent.”

Push is on for aged care support By CHRISTINE McGINN

A LOCAL aged care advocate is pushing for a one-stop aged care service information centre in Bendigo. Leading Aged Services Australia volunteer of the year Ruth Hosking said the city needs an impartial centre to help clients navigate the system and its available services. “There is a step missing. Council has been the receiver of referrals and it is not clear what is going to happen,” she said. “We need an information centre for aged care. Council could assist with this centre in a way to help positive ageing in the city. “It needs to be staffed by a team of health workers who are knowledgeable of the services available, which could be nurses or social workers. I think both those attributes help when talking to people because you pick up things that they may need help with later. “In the technological age, you

can now quickly look up on a computer people with physical issues’ possible needs. You don’t have to know the whole lot, you just have to know where to access it.” City of Greater Bendigo council will make a final decision about its delivery of the Home and Community Care services at the May 6 general meeting. Council made a provisional decision in February to withdraw from the service by September 30, and began community consultation. Despite the federal government introducing a new policy to give clients more choice, Mrs Hosking said there was increasing uncertainty about the availability of services. “There are three categories of care now out of the federal government changes. This is to help people understand that we are going from a welfare model to a marketing model,” she said. “We can ride through this, providing that the person in the street

Forum offers platform for reform planning AGED care providers will unite to discuss strategies for the twilight years with Shadow Minister for Ageing Shayne Neumann next week. “The aged care sector is currently in a state of flux, facing imminent reforms from the federal government as well as changes to the way services are delivered here in Bendigo,” Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said.

The aged care sector is currently in a state of flux “I am therefore delighted to be able to co-host an aged care forum with the Shadow Minister for Ageing, Shayne Neumann, at Bendigo library next week. This is an opportunity for Bendigo’s aged

care providers to come together to talk about the Government’s aged care reforms and what they mean for our region, and to share their broader thoughts and concerns with Mr Neumann. “The aged care sector is reeling from unexpected funding cuts and mismanagement by this federal Liberal Government. I hope this forum will be a positive step forward and will let all those involved in aged care know that Labor is listening.” Mr Neumann will also lunch with the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative leadership team and meet the Koori Education Workforce coordinator. Ms Chesters said Bendigo was fortunate to have high quality programs which created “positive and lasting impacts” on our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Aged care providers are invited to attend the forum on Tuesday April 14 from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the Bendigo library meeting room. Local providers can RSVP to lisa.chesters.mp@aph.gov.au

CARING: Ruth Hosking is hoping to bring about change. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN knows where to go or where to apply. It’s not that they want it done for them, they just want to know who to ring up. Things do change and the person in the street can’t be expected to keep up with that change. “It needs to be accessible and staffed by people who understand the needs of the visitors.”

Ms Hosking said the information centre should also provide a fee schedule, written by the government. “It is not a lifetime solution but a solution for the current federal-state-local government reviews (into aged care),” she said. Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said it was a great

idea that would be fleshed out at an aged care provider forum next week. “We do need a government or not-for-profit to run the centre and it needs to be an impartial and independent place to go,” she said. Mrs Hosking hopes to develop a working party from the forum, believing it “is achievable”.

Fyffe leaves art gallery board AVID Bendigo Art Gallery supporter councillor Rod Fyffe has stood down from his duties as the board’s community representative. City of Greater Bendigo Cr Fyffe found that his appointment on the art gallery board conflicted with his ability to participate or vote on council matters relating to the gallery. Cr Fyffe resigned from the board, effective last Thursday. “I was elected as a councillor to represent the community and that needs to take precedence first (over appointment on the Art Gallery board),” he said. “The conflict of interest rules that there is a conflict of duty because I can’t vote on those things relating to the gallery including recommendation eight (City Futures). “I decided I would service the community better by debating the issues in council.” Councillor Mark Weragoda was appointed to the board as council’s representative last

COUNCIL FIRST: Cr Rod Fyffe. month. Under the Local Government Act, Cr Weragoda does not suffer the same conflict of interest and will be able to vote on matters relating to the gallery. Cr Fyffe said he was sad to

step away from his position on the board but was pleased he would still be able to participate in openings, exhibitions and other events. “I can do all the normal things a member of the community can still do and I can still vote on council issues,” he said. Board chair Gordon McKern believes Cr Fyffe acted in the best interest for the gallery and community. The board will formally accept the resignation at Monday’s board meeting and will consider people for a casual vacancy. “The board members are all aware of members who would be happy to step into the role. From my personal criteria, I would look for a gender balance, younger people because I am not getting younger and someone who has experience being on a board,” Mr McKern said. The person would be able to nominate themselves for the fulltime position at the annual general meeting later in the year.

Focus on long term

By JOEL PETERSON

BENDIGO Spirit chairman Greg Bickley is adamant the club will survive despite the coaching furore that has engulfed the organisation in recent weeks. The club’s board and head coach Bernie Harrower have been locked in a stalemate as to whether Harrower will coach next season, but the club decided to start the process of finding a new head coach after negotiations broke down late last week. The club maintains Harrower rejected its offer of a deal as part of an option written into the coaching contract that expired at the end of the 2014/15 season, while Harrower is pursuing legal action over the matter. The move comes as part of an overhaul of the club’s operations to enable future success on and off-court, and Bickley said it is not simply a move designed to get rid of Harrower as coach. “There have been a lot of nega-

but wanted part of it pushed into the future. As a board we could not afford that, and it is the exact kind of deal that got us into the debt we are in. “We are still paying players that no longer play for the club because of that kind of arrangement. “We made a decision to reevaluate the coaching position. We offered Bernie a contract to which

We view the re-structure as a positive for the club tive comments out there, and we are not about to turn this into a war of words,” Bickley said this week. “We offered Bernie to coach with specific terms, which I won’t go into, he said no. Any suggestion of him agreeing to coach at a reduced fee is not true. “He agreed to coach at the salary he had previously been paid,

he said no. This was never about getting rid of Bernie,” Bickley said. The operations of the club have been largely unseen during its first eight years, and in recent times the club has not had a general manager to oversee its operations. That will be the first domino to fall in the club’s overhaul, with the position to be filled as early as next week. “We have had success on court,

CVGT staff face change

but off the court the club is not running anywhere nearly as well as it could have, there is no doubt in that,” Bickley said. “As a board and as a club, we are not taking ourselves away from that. All aspects of the club could have been improved. That is simply what we are trying to do with the coaching. “We want the Spirit to be the number one ticket in town, as is the case with college basketball sides in the US. “We have had former sponsors coming on board saying they want to re-engage with the club, Basketball Australia is right behind us as well. “We view the re-structure as a positive for the club, in the long term, and that is where our focus needs to be. “We can run the club as it has been run over its initial period in the league and just get by every year, or we can be a club that Bendigo can be proud of for many years to come.”

From Page 1 Assistant Minister for Employment Luke Hartsuyker said the government was committed to helping job seekers find and keep a job. “The new model has a stronger focus on payment for results to ensure that employment service providers are doing all they can to match job seekers with local employment opportunities. There are new wage subsidies to help... funding for work-related training and equipment,” he said. “These reforms are designed to ensure that job seekers and employers receive higher quality services from employment providers and help people to move from welfare to work.” Outcome payments will be given at four, 12 and 26 week intervals.

But according to Jobs Australia’s website, the JSA program helped 1.25 million Australians get into work since 2008. Shadow Minister for Employment Services Julie Collins said employment service providers would struggle with “fewer resources and a growing number of job seekers to manage”. “Labor is not convinced the introduction of a new four week payment will do anything to support job seekers into decent work,” she said. “We believe it will instead lead to increased jobseeker churn and job insecurity. This will be made worse because job seekers will no longer get the training they need to meet the skills needs of employers.” The Weekly posed nine questions to CVGT’s chief executive officer Paul Green about the impact of the changes - CVGT’s ability to deliver services, Victorian job cuts and possible job creation in Tasmania. Mr Green declined to comment about the changes. “I am afraid Paul is not available to comment on any of your queries below,” his executive assistant replied.

Beryl is one of the many residents that has moved into Botanic Village lifestyle community in Kangaroo Flat. After her husband past away, she was left on her own and decided she needed to make the change and move into a village community. She found it difficult looking after the family home and expensive to maintain. “I lived in a good size house with a large block. Before I moved into the village I was paying people to look after the yard and keep everything maintained,” Beryl said. “One day a friend drove me past Botanic Village and I fell in love with the complex.” After talking with her family, Beryl made an appointment with Kaylene who answered her questions and was willing to speak to her family about the whole process of moving. “When I visited the village I toured the house that I’m in now and loved it. “I put my deposit down that day and then organised to put my house on the market. “My family are thrilled for me and feel like I couldn’t have found a nicer place to live. My daughter came to visit after Christmas and said she would move in now if she was old enough.” Like so many other older singles and couples, Beryl worried about the process of selling her house. “I knew it would sell and I would be able to move into the village and my lovely new house, but it all took time.” “You have the stress of having open days and people walking through your house. It’s hard when you’re by yourself.” Botanic Village have introduced a new option to help people like Beryl move into the village sooner working with real estate agents to minimise the stress involved. “I’m so thankful to everyone for helping me move into the village.” “It feels like I’ve been here all my life already. Everyone in the village has contributed to helping me settle in.” “I’ve never felt guilty for moving. I just wish I had moved in sooner, but my husband would never have moved. “I’m 76 years old and feel I will have a full and happy life now I’m living in the village. I go to bed and feel safe and secure.” “The village is quiet and everyone keeps to themselves, but at the same time they make sure everyone is okay. “We have movie nights and other activities together. It’s up to the individual themselves to come along and interact, but people knock on the door and invite me to come along to things.” “I don’t drive, but the Village is situated close to everything I need.”

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, April 10, 2015

Sixteen years in any job is a good grounding, but Jacinta Allan MP is certainly hitting the heights as a minister in the state government. DIANNE DEMPSEY went behind the scenes to find out more.

Minister makes the most of family life EARLY last December when Jacinta Allan and her husband Yorick Piper were driving down to parliament house there was a certain amount of tension in the air. “Yorick was driving and I was clutching the phone. Premier Daniels had told us he would allocating the portfolios that night and would be contacting the successful candidates individually,” Jacinta said. “Finally the phone rang. I said yes, a few times and hung up. Yorick was waiting for my response – he couldn’t read it because I was just sitting there in silence. I think I was in shock,” Jacinta laughed. The member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan, 41, had just been appointed Minister for Public Transport and Minister for Employment by the Andrews Labor Government. A parliamentarian for the past 16 years Jacinta has always been our Golden Child – the only surprise about the appoint-

into her home for an exclusive interview. As former Labor party minister and colleague, Bob Cameron says “Jacinta is a politician held in high regard by both sides of the parliamentary fence.” The Weekly decided it

was time we got to know her a little better. It was a Friday evening when we visited, the end of another hectic week and Jacinta was at home with Yorick and her two young children – Peggy, 3, and Cormac, 15 months.

Her relatively modest home is nestled amongst 20 hectares of bush and rolling hills on the outskirts of Bendigo. The Weekly suggested Jacinta might like to do a Kitchen Cabinet type interview a la Annabel Crabb and demonstrate her culinary skills, but she laughs saying it would be a tad hypocritical given that Yorick does most of the cooking. “Friday nights he makes pizza. It’s the time of the week we relax together. If we’re lucky we might make it to the Dispensary for dinner, but that doesn’t happen too often.” Time these days is precious for the minister. Time she can find to spend with her family; time she can devote to her critical responsibilities, so we cut to the chase. Given her impressive track record which starts as the youngest woman – at 25 – to be elected to the Victorian parliament, does she these days have leadership ambitions? Jacinta doesn’t miss a beat. “I’m happy doing the job I’m doing, I’ve been in parliament for nearly 16 years and you learn to deal with the cards in front of you. “And at this time I am thrilled to have a senior role – Transport. I was taken aback to get that and excited. Transport and Employment go hand in hand. My aim is to drive job creation through public transport commitments. Daniel Andrews is doing an outstanding job and it’s great working with a leader I respect.” Jacinta has rarely put a foot wrong in a career which has included portfolios in Education, Industry and Trade. Shadow ministries have included Police and Emergency Services, Roads, Regional and Rural Development and Agriculture. At present Jacinta is also Leader of the House, a position which basically sets the government’s parliamentary agenda. And as a parliamentarian she is a strong and feisty performer, an observation with which Mr Cameron agrees. “Jacinta is a woman who can keep many balls up in the air. And

OUTSIDE INTERESTS: Family time is extra special when away from government responsibilities. Photos: ANDREW PERRYMAN she is extremely capable. Anybody who knows Jacinta will know that she loves Bendigo,” Cameron said. “Bendigo and her family, these two passions are intertwined. People are always quick to criticise politicians but ultimately politicians sort out what happens with the big ticket items. In Bendigo Jacinta has pushed for the Calder Highway duplication project, the new secondary schools and the new hospital. “The work required to get that hospital built was huge. Jacinta had to line up so many ducks in a row in order to get the funding – local and state health departments, Treasury, the Premier and finally the Treasurer. The public don’t see those hundreds of hours spent behind the scenes.” The Golden Child comes from a well-known Bendigo Labor family where dinner consisted of chops and three veg. Politics and reading

Hansard was considered a way of relaxing. Jacinta’s late grandfather and currently her father have strong Trades Hall affiliations. “Mum and Dad were always out there in the community working to

By 1999, 25-year-old Jacinta’s potential was clear. Michael Johns, who was a minister at the time, held the safe Liberal seat of Bendigo East. Jacinta was nominated for pre-selection on the grounds that contesting the seat would be a

If you were to get in between Jacinta and Bendigo East, it would be an extremely dangerous place to be support school and sports committees, that’s just been part of the culture I’ve grown up in,” she said. Jacinta attended St Joseph’s primary school, Catholic College and La Trobe University in Bendigo where she did a BA (Hon). Her political apprenticeship was completed when she worked in the Labor party offices of Neil O’Keefe and Steve Gibbons, both federal MPs.

good experience. But despite the odds, Jacinta took on and defeated the Liberal minister. The family was proud that night. Proud and not at all surprised that the Golden Child had come so far so quickly. When she considers her career, she says that she has had to make a real sacrifice to be in politics. “I love my job, I’m so lucky to

have it but there’s not a week that goes by when I don’t have a conversation with Yorick about how hard it is to leave the children. The comfort for me is knowing that it is Yorick and our families who are caring for Peggy and Cormac.“ Yorick said he is enjoying this stage of their marriage. A former union official and senior advisor to John Brumby, he clearly believes in supporting his wife during this important stage of her career. “I’ve been having a great time,” he said. “I’m so lucky to have Yorick and as well I have an in-house political advisor,” Jacinta added. Family support was never more needed when their first child, little Peggy, was born with multiple health problems – problems which Jacinta and Yorick are pleased to announce have been largely overcome. Apart from her family and Yorick, Jacinta has the loyalty and friendship of three women in particular. Emma McKenzie, Marika McMahon and Rachel Lee were all single together and went through the trials and tribulations of dating and marriage and then juggling work and babies. “When I first came to Bendigo Jacinta and her family took me under their wing,” Emma says. “Jacinta is a basically a good and kind person, what you see is what you get. She doesn’t come across as a slick political figure. She’s genuine. “We’ve had such fun together over the years and I just love watching her now running around after those little babies,” Emma laughed. Another contemporary of Jacinta’s who went to Catholic College with her said “I was shy at school and often bullied but Jacinta wasn’t one of those snobby girls. She would always give me a smile and stop and have a chat with me. I’m still grateful for that.” But remember this of the Golden Child, yes she is a genuinely good, straightforward person but as Mr Cameron says “If you were to get in between Jacinta and Bendigo East, it would be an extremely dangerous place to be.”

It was also found that the proportion of adults who were overweight or obese for Greater Bendigo was 60 per

cent, much higher than the state average of 49.8 per cent, according to the 2011-2012 Victorian Population Health Survey conducted by the Department of Health. The Biggest Winner campaign kicks off on April 27 running over 12 weeks, and registrations are now open. Registration costs $125. As part of the registration, participants will receive a pair of runners, a pedometer to use during the challenge, motivational e-newsletters, training sessions with partnering gyms and cash prizes at the completion of the program plus much more. NOW ARRIVING

Better driving brings police praise Edwards said. Victoria Police have run three policing operations – ARID, Reassure and Crossroads – during this period to target driver distractions. “Just because an operation isn’t on, people don’t need to take their eye off the ball,” Snr Sgt Edwards said. A 32-year-old Bendigo man will appear in court next month for possessing a handgun and other drugrelated offences. A local police searched a vehicle parked in the Lake Weeroona carpark about 11.30pm on Tuesday night. Officers found an imitation hand gun made from a galvanised pipe and capable of holding a 22-cartridge, ammunition, knives, cannabis and other drugs. The man was charged on 12 counts including possessing a handgun, am-

PARTICIPANTS in the 2015 Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program were engaged in two days of activities recently as part of a Vision of the Region theme. Learning how to get their messages across via various forms of the media, participants were interested in the behind the scenes action at ABC Radio Central Victoria and a media writing workshop with journalist Andrew McKenna. Public speaking guru Peter Dhu presented to the participants giving them more confidence in their own ability to get the important message across. Taking to the skies with charter flights from Bendigo Airport, participants were also given the opportunity to see the region from a very different perspective. Some happily showed

off their own stomping grounds from a unique angle while others were more challenged to be up in the air. Speakers from Parks Victoria; the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources; the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning; and North Central Catchment Management Authority helped add context to what was viewed from the air of the region. Joined by graduates and community leaders for the annual Vision of the Region Dinner, a panel of young speakers gave their perspectives of the issues that confront young people and the future development of their regions. Participants finished off the two day program with a renewed passion for their own interests and an appreciation for the many

TWO cars were clocked driving about 70 kilometres an hour over the speed limit in Kangaroo Flat and Maiden Gully on Monday night. Police saw a sedan and a Ford Falcon EL following it at high speeds on Helm Street in Kangaroo Flat at 11.50pm. Senior Sergeant Edwards said an 11-year-old Echuca boy was the only person to sustain a serious injury when he came off his trail-bike into a ditch. Two drivers had their cars impounded under the hoon laws for clocking 150 kilometres an hour and 147km/h, respectively. Bendigo Police Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Mark Edwards said the fiveday Operation Crossroads had been successful across the region. “The number one thing is that no one died, this is the biggest good news to come out of the Easter and March, which is traditionally the worst month on our roads,” Snr Sgt Edwards said. “I am really pleased we have got through the Labor Day weekend, the month of March and the Easter longweekend without fatalities. It is a combination of policing and people getting the message and them starting to curb their habits.” Around 25 drivers were caught for driving under the

Nothing new in duck hunting argument In reply to the letter “Against Duck Hunt” by Lola Currie (Bendigo Weekly, March 27) Bendigo Field and Game would wish to comment that it’s a typical attempted argument generated by the Coalition Against Duck Shooting (CADS) with the same misinformation and sensationalism that gets wheeled out year after year. We refute Ms Currie’s nonsensical claims. From nearly every photo taken at Murphy Lake at Kerang this year there are less than 50 protesters, the disbursement of reported activity at other lakes and wetlands around the state puts the total numbers at less than 80 all told. As for “teams” this remains to be seen for the rest of the season, perhaps individuals and pairs maybe a better description. The 110 claimed recovered birds are easily identifiable as game species, likely from a high rate of theft of legally shot gamebirds, and several long dead birds displayed on the steps of parliament with less than 15 protected species. The swan in particular having been long dead. Where are the test results that show these birds were actually shot? How many died from powerline strikes, tree collision, raptor kill or the botulism outbreak at Hallam in December 2014? The Andrews Labor Government should be applauded for another duck season which produces and contributes over $106 million out of $439m generated from hunting in Victoria, more than half of that spent regionally. One can only surmise that the Kerang butcher shops wouldn’t have sold out of meat because of CADS, nor would the bakery, servos or pubs done much business purely because of CADS. Lastly, if the dubious number of 120 people is taken into account; as a percentage it is far smaller than the .04 per cent of the population that CADS likes to keep waving about when talking about the 26,000 paid for and licensed duck hunters in Victoria that bought all of Victoria State Game Reserves. Luckily we can assess the CADS claim on injury rate quite easily; again it’s mere mathematics. Lake Murphy was reported as having 3000 birds on it on March 20, there was about 300 hunters, the average bag was five birds and we know the bag limit of 10 wasn’t

achieved. However, if the injury rate was three from four ducks; then there should have been 15 birds for each hunters average of five bagged leaving 15 allegedly injured. Multiply this number by 300 hunters and that means there should have been (by CADS numbers) 4500 injured birds at Lake Murphy. Even if we agree there was 100 game birds recovered by CADS this means there are 4400 missing injured game birds. Where are they? I note that CADS didn’t find them on Sunday, March 22, nor did they appear on the following weekend. The injury rate (by CADS claims) is 50 per cent more the actual number of birds counted on Lake Murphy just days before the season opening. The claim is false and proves CADS is trying to dupe the general public. We understand and acknowledge that hunting is not for everyone, neither is bushwalking, nor is cricket/football/basketball or anything you may care to name. Our community is made up of a broad range of backgrounds and opinions, hunters don’t expect that we should all be forced by CADS or the Greens to become vegans. Hunters hunt because we prefer to harvest free range game and we accept that we are carnivores and take responsibility of providing our own food. We accept that others in the community don’t hunt but still partake in weekly shopping at the supermarket or butcher to provide meat/poultry/ fish for themselves and their families. If CADS/RSPCA were truly concerned about protecting all of Australia’s water birds it would be seeking habitat, supporting sustainable hunting and lobbying for water to fill our dry wetlands, instead of lying and playing the community for fools. Danny Ryan Bendigo Branch Field and Game Publicity Officer.

A retrograde step It was sad to read that Senator David Leyonhjelm, currently holding a very powerful position in Canberra, with the opportunity to have a positive influence in government, has instead chosen the retrograde step of becoming the mouthpiece for the gay lobby, whose sole interest in establishing same sex marriage is to enshrine

Shining the light on a critical issue THE Royal Commission into Family Violence released an issues paper to assist individuals and organisations in lodging written submissions. The issues paper includes themes and questions to aid writers in providing the most valuable information about what works and what doesn’t work in the current family violence system. The Royal Commission has been tasked with investigating the problem of family violence from every perspective. This issue makes up 40 per cent of all police work and is the leading contributor to death and disability in women under 45. One in every three women on your train, tram or bus or at your local supermarket, is a victim of family violence. The system is broken and we

must do more to keep women and children safe. Royal Commissions shine a spotlight on critical issues in a way no other kind of inquiry can. I urge stakeholders, organisations and victims to make their voices heard. Submissions can be made anonymously and confidentially or can be made publicly. Submissions close on May 29. For more information on how to make a written submission and for a copy of the issues paper, visit www.rcfv.com.au Fiona Richardson, Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Minister for Women

Time for an answer The climate change subject keeps raising its head. Once it was global warming. It is now such a monstrous business with hundreds of “experts” making lots of money from governments which means that the Joe Blows of the world are paying them. The only thing that we Joe Blows have been told in return is that the burning of fossil fuels on a world wide scale has created a blanket of carbon dioxide gas in our planet’s atmosphere. That this blanket will not let our planet reflect excess heat back into space. That, of course, has happened for millions of years be-

fore that CO2 got up there. I am prepared to accept that all this may well be the case but am still waiting to find out who, or what organisation, discovered that carbon dioxide gas is a one way filter. After all, if this gas will stop the reflection of excess heat from earth getting to outer space, why does it not stop heat from outer space getting on to planet earth’s surface? If the gas does in fact prevent earth from reflecting heat out, it should not allow heat to get in, thereby starting a new ice age. I have never heard any explanation from even one of those very well paid experts. Could it be that such an explanation would stop governments’ world wide from contributing millions of dollars to a fake industry. Is there anyone out there who could (or would dare) supply a truthful answer rather than a maybe theory? Reg Jordan, Kangaroo Flat

Welcome to a new aged care living option with...

Editorial Comment the help in finding work, the staff at CVGT will be looking for jobs too. It beggars belief to see how massive job cuts can ultimately improve our economy. If people have no jobs they don’t spend, if people have no jobs they don’t pay tax to fund a government desperate to be seen as saving the country. Politicians of all colours attempt to fix the deficit and our country, and we may end up being in surplus eventually, but it seems to be at the cost of employment. Who knows where it will end? Aged care will certainly be affected, and providers are feeling the need to band together. “The aged care sector is currently in a state of flux, facing imminent reforms from the federal government as well as changes to the way services are delivered

here in Bendigo,” Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said this week. It certainly paints a gloomy picture for those of us who reach old age having the worry of diminishing funding, health care and accommodation. That’s why it doesn’t hurt to focus on the joys of the Easter Festival this week, and the thought of some happy events ahead. But we can also draw inspiration from youngsters touched by the plight of those impacted by the cyclone on Vanuatu last month. Zahlia Burrill-Grinton and her mum visited the island last year, and Zahlia was so worried about the people she met she has decided to return with a group of friends to help in whatever way she can to ease those suffering from the after effects of the weather catastrophe. That someone so young can show care and empathy for those from afar must surely give hope that all is not yet lost. We can only hope it is a common feeling. It certainly is one to be encouraged.

WHILE there is much to be concerned about in our city, there is also much to be proud of. Within the pages of the Weekly this issue we can see the genuine joy of those who took part in or viewed the Easter parade. There where plenty of naysayers who were ready to put the event down, but our photos show there is still plenty to be seen and enjoyed at this special time of year. There is no doubt the event is not as big as it once was, but nothing remains the same, it’s a fact of life. Let’s enjoy it for what it is, a chance to let you hair down and enjoy the colour and noise. But despite the happy hue, we have to face some facts. The apparent loss of tenders at CVGT is a continuation of a worrying trend. Federal government cuts when seen on the news are someone else’s problem, but when we see the knock-on effects the reality hits home. CVGT finds jobs for people, it was funded by the government to do so, with these looming changes, not only will people not have

AGED CARE

opinion By COUNCILLOR PETER COX City of Greater Bendigo Mayor

LATELY, the Greater Bendigo City Council has been distracted. Instead of planning for our region’s future, the council has been busy addressing councillor behaviour. It is time for the council to draw a line under this tumultuous time and refocus its energy on the decisions and actions that matter. Greater Bendigo deserves better. The council has endorsed a range of exciting strategies that will shape our city in years to come. The Residential Development Strategy, the Waste and Resource Management Strategy, Hospital Precinct Structure Plan and the Rosalind Park Master Plan are all great examples of the hard work of City

of Greater Bendigo staff and council. Last weekend’s Easter celebrations, including the annual gala parade and numerous family activities, serve as a reminder of the wonderful community we are a part of. I was so proud of our city – it looked marvellous,

strates Greater Bendigo truly is making great strides towards being Australia’s most liveable regional city. A city like ours also needs infrastructure. Last year the council opened the new generation Bendigo Library, the Bendigo Art Gallery extension and Bendigo’s first Splash Park,

I was so proud of our city – it looked marvellous our residents were welcoming and people of all ages raved about the festivities. Easter caps off a busy start to the year for events, including Australia Day, the Bendigo International Madison, Eaglehawk’s Dahlia and Arts Festival and the inaugural Heathcote Games. Each event demon-

and started the redevelopment of Canterbury Park. I’m looking forward to the new 1000-seat Ulumbarra Theatre “A Place for People” opening day on Sunday week. This is a free but ticketed event; however a ticket is not required for the free housewarming event on Sunday, April 26. I encour-

age you to visit the Ulumbarra website or phone the Box Office on 5434 6100 to find out more. Each strategy, celebration, major event and infrastructure project puts Greater Bendigo at the forefront of regional living. The draft Council Plan and the Budget will be released at the next Council meeting on April 15, both of which also aim to improve our quality of life in Greater Bendigo. I encourage residents to read online or collect a copy of the draft documents from Council offices. Your feedback is highly valued and will continue to shape a bright future for Greater Bendigo. The draft Budget and Council Plan will be formally adopted in June.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, April 10, 2015

Be seen, be safe at night DAYLIGHT savings has ended and daylight hours are closing in at both ends of the day. It is a theme worth reflecting on every year: how to make sure you’re seen on the road when the sun’s low on the horizon, in fading light and in darkness. Increasing the chance of being seen increases your safety. By law you must have lights front and rear that are visible for no less than 200 metres. A light fixed on your bike that’s adjusted properly is much easier to see than hooking a light on the rear pocket of your riding top. Helmet lights front and rear can also add to your safety, especially as the light points in the direction you look. Check your batteries or recharge your lights regularly to make sure they’re as bright as they should be. Being seen side-on is always an issue. More cyclists tangle with cars that come from the side than most other interactions that cause grief. Most cyclists aren’t willing to be seen as a “dork on wheels” but there are many ways that such reflective material can be tastefully incorporated into the frame and moving parts and be highly effective. Wearing reflective apparel can help as car lights are caught and reflected back for hundreds of metres.

bendigo

You can also incorporate reflective tape on your bike frame and moving components such as cranks and wheels, and around your ankles which, combined with lights will give you 360 degrees of coverage. For the commuter, tyres are available with a reflective line around the tyre wall. Choosing a suitable route can also be highly effective. Riding east in the early morning towards the rising

sun and west into the setting sun can place you at undue risk even if you are being predictable on the road. Sunlight on windows can be disastrous in that split second when the driver is blinded. Wet roads and foggy windows all add a higher degree of risk for cyclists. Lighting up and wearing highly visible clothing must be considered to give you every chance of being seen. It’s rare for me to be off the bike but when I am, as a driver, I can appreciate those cyclists who try hard to be visible. Strangely enough we are not indestructible and we do have an obligation to share the road safely. See you on the road soon, God willing. – Eddie Barkla

Bourke’s Kitchens’ flair and ingenuity covering both design and manufacture has well and truly stood the test of time and is constantly being tested daily in homes and businesses throughout central Victoria

Key to success ONE of the reasons why Bourke’s Kitchens have gained such an enviable reputation for quality, may well be due to all their management and production personnel having relevant trade backgrounds. Not forgetting founder and managing director Glenn Bourke who ventured out on his own as Bourke’s Kitchens 25 years ago, after completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner at Bendigo Hume and Iser Joinery. Prospective clients can discuss their requirements personally with Glenn or any of Bourke’s professional showroom, sales or office staff. “Today, kitchen designs are more diverse and intricate,” Glenn said “TV shows such as The Block have shown what is possible in kitchen and joinery design and we at Bourke’s need to show the latest innovations, techniques and finishes to stay ahead of the market.” Fourteen factory-floor staff including two apprentices manufacture and assemble a range of kitchens and cabinetry under the guidance of Allan Battersby as factory manager, who originally joined Bourke’s more than 10 years ago as a cabinet maker. “We love to be challenged by

unique designs,” Allan said. “One of the best things about working on the factory floor is having a hand in bringing all Bourke’s Kitchen designs to life.” It is no coincidence that two of Glenn’s longest serving employees are now part of a tight-knit management team, after having been associated with Bourke’s Kitchens for more than 15 years. Sales Manager Wes Lowe, a qualified cabinet maker himself, oversees a passionate sales team who are available to assist you with all your joinery and design enquiries. Draftsman and qualified cabinet maker Mark Brown joined Glenn two years prior to Wes as an independent subcontractor before becoming a valued full time employee where his extensive trade knowledge is put to good use. It’s a team effort at Bourke’s Kitchens. From your first design enquiry right through to the installation, all of Glenn Bourke’s employees are available to assist you every step of the way. A shock to the system Steve brought in a high-tech solution for an age-old problem

Dear Dotty, I am 18-years-old and have lived in Bendigo all my life and I am so BORED! I am so BORED I am writing to see if U no any thing to do in this DUMP! Bored, Jarhad Dear Jarhad,

I

T all started with the electric jackhammer. I moved into a house in Kyneton, and the previous owner had built a barbecue to last a thousand years. I manhandled the bluestone blocks away, but the reinforced concrete base was another matter, hence the jackhammer. It was a bloody great brute of a thing, but it did the job, and I gamely chipped away at 150 millimetres of concrete. I was nearing the end of the job when I lost balance and tumbled backwards with the jackhammer falling on top of me. To save my head I rounded my shoulders which took the force of my fall. Ouch. Anyway, roll on 10 years and the ache from the cracked rib has returned. It’s a dull annoying ache, and one that jabs at times and causes more pain. Whinger that I am, I moped around until the long-suffering Mrs Kendall offered me the use of her TENS machine. As the name suggests, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation belts you with a

I think that’s what it does anyway, so after a swift shave of the back by Mrs K, she placed the sticky pads on my now bare back. Then it was time for the connection. Two wires were connected to a little power box with buttons on it to vary the voltage. There I was watching Catalyst on the telly, wired up. I pressed the button and a small tingle ran between the two pads. Not sure if I liked the feeling or not, but it was so delicate I decided to turn it up a notch.

Then I turned it up again, and again, and before I knew it I was running at a power that was flexing my whole shoulder like an errant wing. I was not sure I was doing it right, and the small print was just too small to check, but it got to the point where I lost my nerve a bit. This was not helped by Mrs K gleefully suggesting I could mess about with my heart if I pushed it too far. Suddenly the perceived health benefits lost their appeal, and I pulled out the wires on the little box. I get the impression Mrs

K would have liked to turn it up even more, but I could be wrong. To be honest it felt a little better, the pain being more general than pinpoint. Next day all was well, until my muscles, obviously reacting to the over exertion, decided to ache in a far greater area than before. I expect it was operator error, but for now the TENS method can stay in the box, and hero that I am, I will work through the ache. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

Ward off on new track M

USICIAN Pat Ward has added another accomplishment to his growing list of achievements, with the release of his debut EP, Moonlight. The 16-year-old spent parts of last year recording the EP. He said his new music tells stories of emotion, incorporating captivating phrases and diverse instrumentation. “When creating this EP, I wanted to develop a style of music which was alternate to the typical pop song, because... music has so much more to offer when it is original and unique,” the Catholic College student said. Ward said the inspiration for songs on the EP came from personal experiences and people around him. The title track off the EP came from Ward hearing a story on the bus, of a girl speaking about her friend who was going through a tough time. “I was really moved by the story, and felt I had to write a song about it. The main thing about writing songs is to tell a story,” he said. “I think my song writing and sound has become more unique as I have slowly become more familiar with the artist I want to be.” Having been involved in the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival since 2013, Ward said festivals like this further help him gain experience, and becoming a better artist. “I think that the EP shows where I am at now as an artist, and is a taster of what is to come,” he said. Moonlight will be launched on Saturday, May 2, at The Old Church on the Hill, Quarry Hill from 7pm, with free entry. For more information, or to buy the EP, contact patwardmusic@gmail.com, or via facebook. - Sam Kane

ELEBRATED chef and Victorian Farmers Market ambassador Matt Wilkinson will undertake activities with both the Bendigo Community Farmers Market and Central Victoria’s Food Fossickers Network this weekend. Mr Wilkinson has worked previously at Melbourne’s Vue de Monde and Circa before opening his own venue with friend Ben Foster in 2010; Pope Joan, a café, bar and restaurant extended to include Hams and Bacon – a produce store. Publishing his second cookbook in March 2015, Wilkinson’s first best-selling book Mr Wilkinson’s Favourite Vegetables, has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide and cemented his reputation as a local produce champion, kitchen gardens advocate and food regionalism spokesperson. Mr Wilkinson will begin his Bendigo visit on Saturday as special guest of the Bendigo Community Farmers Market fifth birthday celebrations cooking from a mystery box of local produce at 10am on the market’s Community Stage. Following the market, Mr Wilkinson will then join Food Fossickers President Sonia Anthony for a local food tour, stopping in at The Woodhouse, Bendigo Wholefoods, B&B

Local food industry venue owners, employees and producers are invited to join Wilkinson for breakfast on the following day, to be held at Hargreaves Street café Percy and Percy from 9.30 am. “This is a terrific opportunity for the local hospitality industry to come together and enjoy terrific conversations surrounding our local industry

and the produce we have available” Ms Anthony said. “Due to the working commitments required for the industry it doesn’t happen very often, so we are looking forward to enjoying a coffee together – and of course, the chance to discuss how brilliant our local producers are with a chef of Matt Wilkinson’s calibre and influence.” The Bendigo Community Farmers Market is held at Sidney Myer Place from 9am to 1pm every second Saturday of the month.

UGIE March is back from a sixyear hiatus. The band has also quietly been creating a fifth studio album, Havens Dumb, in Hobart and Melbourne over the past three years. What’s more, the band plays the Ulumbarra Theatre next week. The band’s return to the live stage came in the form of playing at Howler, a few streets away from the scene of their first-ever show 16 years earlier, in Brunswick. They ended up doing five nights in a row by popular demand. It was indeed a triumphant return, with the band in best-ever form, playing better than ever, and enjoying themselves for the first time in a long time. The band enjoyed critical success in 2004 with the release of

more shows, and as part of a national tour off the back of the launch of Havens Dumb, they play the brand new Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo on Thursday.

Thundamentals at Star T

HUNDAMENTALS’ reputation as a band of party starters is resonating with Australian music fans as demand has pushed the rap crew to double the number of Elephant In The Room tour dates, including Bendigo on April 23. What’s more, taking a leaf from the legacy of support that legends like the Hilltop Hoods have given Thundas, the Sydney-via-Blue Mountains group are announcing Melbourne’s 18-year-old rap wunderkind BARO as tour support. Thundamentals are the official Welcome To Australia ambassadors, a significant marker in the message of inclusiveness.

To celebrate their Welcome To Australia appointment, Thundamentals are designing a special edition Got Love band shirt, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to The Asylum Seeker Centre. As MC Jeswon explains in an official statement to Welcome To Australia, it’s a big nod to the “ideals that myself and my friends are representing in our music: diversity, compassion and a commitment to cultivating meaningful relationships within the community. One Love.” Thundamentals play at Star Bar on Thursday, April 23.

A great white knight

A

T the time of the Great Depression in the 1920s and 1930s a lot of effort went into attempting to increase employment opportunities here in Bendigo. I have mentioned the role of the Advance Bendigo and North League and some of the influential personalities in that organisation, doing their utmost to attract diverse industries to Bendigo. The role of members of the Lansell family in assisting through investment in new industries is a topic within itself. However, one of the individuals, the eldest son of the Quartz King George Lansell himself, was instrumental in these efforts. The eldest son, George Victor Lansell, who was later knighted, was partially instrumental in negotiations to bring about the establishment in Bendigo of the Australian Swiss Manufacturing Company. Precise details of the company so far have eluded my search, as a result I have only been able to give a general idea of the people involved and will go on to explain something more of what they manufactured. Sir George, as he later became known, was born away from Bendigo when his father had left Bendigo for London and his interests in the plethora of gold mines to be administered by Isaac Dyason. George Victor Lansell was born in London on October 3, 1883, his mother Harriet Edith Lansell, nee Bassford was The Quartz King’s second wife.

MILITARY MAN: Sir George V Lansell

St Andrew’s College, reportedly the best privately run school in Bendigo, was where George Victor Lansell was educated. There was also the rigour of physical activity that his father thought was essential to make his sons into fine upstanding young men. Swimming in the Roman Baths at Fortuna, boxing, rowing on the lake at their home and gymnastics were to be excelled at by the siblings. St Andrew’s College was to be followed by boarding at the Melbourne Grammar School, which set high academic standards as well as promoting excellence in sports, football, cricket and rowing. George Victor Lansell was also a crack shot with the revolver.

His physical training and the interest in shooting gave him a natural inclination to join the military as an extension of his earlier involvement in cadets. The discipline which he had experienced at home and also during his schooling adapted him well to being commissioned in the 8th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1904. Upon the passing of the Quartz King on March 18, 1906, George Victor Lansell had to take on additional responsibility for assisting to run far more of the financial interests of his late father. The prosperity of the Lansell family was almost totally tied up in Bendigo, therefore in later life George Victor Lansell would make his mark in ensuring that the city stopped the decline which came quite rapidly with the demise of mining. George Victor Lansell progressed rapidly in the military as he was promoted to captain in 1909, only three years after his father’s death. At the time of the start of World War I, experienced officers were in high demand and in May 1916 he was commissioned a captain in the 38th Battalion which was Bendigo’s own, of the Australian Imperial Force. Lieutenant Colonel CH Davis was the commanding officer, with Captain LL Smith working the men of the newly formed 38th Battalion into a trained cohesive force to which further recruits could be added.

Local fly fishers miss out

Lucky angler returns home with new boat By NICK ATYEO

F

By STEVE CHARLES

R

ECENTLY members of the Bendigo Fly Fishing Club competed in the third annual Lake Wendouree Two Fly competition, hosted by the Ballarat Fly Fishers Club. Jeff Willey and myself had success with two beautiful 49 centimetre brown trout caught and released. Jeff further backed up his initial success with solid 43 and 34cm browns in the net, however the winner of the competitiion was AJ from the Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club, who caught a magnificent 60cm brown trout – a real trophy. Wendouree has been fishing well and due to abundant food sources, can produce some really big trout. We spotted a number of mayfly duns on the water and hope it is a sign of a return to the good old days (pre-drought) when Wendouree could produce prolific hatches of mayfly in Spring and Autumn. Recent releases of water from Lake Dartmouth have seen the Mitta running high and fast where I spent the Easter camping and fishing on a property South of Tallangatta. A strong flow of cold water flowing

HOOKED: Steve Charles and his healthy 49cm brown trout at Lake Wendouree. downstream into a low and relatively warm Lake Hume, has seen trout on the move before moving upstream into the cooler water looking for food and preparing for their winter spawning season. With the water levels high the action is along the edges and in the backwaters. I caught six beautiful, silvery brown trout in the relative calm within a metre or two from the bank. Targeting the drop-offs where the water deepens rapidly is always a good

place to find trout. They all took a simple brown nymph suspended half a meter below a dry fly. The real highlight and a personal best for me was a stunning 59cm rainbow trout that gulped a yellow humpy fly off the surface right in front of me. She weighed in at nearly two kilos. If you’re interested in learning more about fly fishing check out the Bendigo & District Fly Fishing Club website at www.bdffc.weebly.com or find us on Facebook.

Bendigo Clay Target Club’s Come’n’try day is a joint effort with Bendigo Field and Game and Hartley’s Hunting and Tackle World.

OUR members of the Bendigo Legion Angling Club fished the Balranald Murrumbidgee Classic last month for mixed results on the Murrumbidgee River. While the overall fishing was slow Maurice Knight returned to Bendigo a happy angler with a new Quintrex explorer and Yamaha outboard as the lucky draw winner. In other news Fisheries released 243,000 golden perch fingerlings during March to improve recreational fishing opportunities across northern Victoria. Lake Eppalock received 65,500 fingerlings, Cairn Curran Reservoir 20,000 while Lake Charm and Kow swamp shared another 20,000 fingerlings. Local rivers didn’t miss out either with the Goulburn River between Nagambie and Seymour receiving 50,000 fingerlings and the Campaspe River around Rochester another 5000. Fisheries Victoria’s stocking program is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government. Round three of the Central Victorian Lure Casters Super Series will be held this Sunday, April 12 at Lake Eildon. Registrations before 7am at the Peppin Point Caravan Park. Bonnie Doon. Visit www.cvlcss.com for more information. Closer to home the planned inaugural Lake Eppalock Fishing Classic scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled so local anglers will be left to their own devices. However Waranga Basin just outside Rushworth has been producing redfin for those prepared to put in the effort. I’ve been fishing the western side within a couple of kilometres of the boat ramp at the outlet channel for consistent results during the last five weeks, at around the six metre depth Trolled deep-diving hard body lures such as RMG’s Halco 50mm poltergeist or the Australian Crafted 50mm Invader about 600mm behind a 50 or 65mm Killer Tomato Squidgy have been a consistent fish taker. More times than not the fish prefer the squidgy but when trolled through a school of redfin double hookups are not unexpected.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, April 10, 2015

WEEKLY SPORT

Back in the game By JOEL PETERSON

A BOLSTERED Bendigo Bank Braves side is looking to celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary this season in the best way possible, by claiming an elusive South East Australian Basketball League title. The Braves missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2004 and faced uncertainty over whether coach Ben Harvey would return this season. Harvey is back for 2015, and he has brought a swag of new recruits with him including reigning SEABL Most Valuable Player Tony Lewis, big man Jordan Vandenberg and reigning Big V MVP Grant Johnson. Now in his sixth season as coach, Harvey is aiming to repeat the efforts of the 2005 Braves, who after missing the playoffs the year before, went on to take the South conference title. “It was disappointing last year and the off-season was all about moving forward and finding a solution to the next phase,” he said. “We have recruited pretty well, we have got great guys investing in the club and our pre-season has been pretty positive. “I have a good feeling about how our team is looking this year. ”It’s a big year for the club, a really exciting time to be involved, and there would obviously be no better way to celebrate than to win a title.” The Braves struggled to defend last season, but with the rim protection of 216-centimetre centre Vandenberg and versatile additions in Lewis and Johnson, Harvey expects

to be able to throw a different look at sides this season. The Braves have also increased their depth, with young guns Michael Vigor, Josh Wilcher joined by mainstays in Kevin Probert, Chris Hogan and Taylor Bell and new recruit Jordan Mangan. “I’m really happy with our Australian content, which is really important and really forms the core of your side,” Harvey said. “Tony Lewis is just a hard worker, we lacked a bit of mental toughness and he brings that in spades. Grant Johnson really did well in the Big V and I think he is definitely a SEABL-level player. “Jordan is over seven foot, and we are looking for big things out of him. But I want all those guys just to do what they have to do to get a win, not perform to a certain stat

line or anything like that.” After having high hopes for his side last year, Harvey is confident the team has improved over last season and says there would be no better way to celebrate that anniversary than with a championship. “I think we will be a better team, we put plenty of work in over the off-season and we are ready to go,” he said. “We have a tough start to the season that begins with Ballarat on Friday, but we are ready to go. “Once that ball goes up in the air on Friday there isn’t much you can do, but I think we have done all the right things to set us on the right course. “Hopefully that ends in a championship, but there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before that is decided.”

Coach lines up for title AFTER coming so close to a title both of the past two years, Bendigo Lady Braves coach Jonathan Goodman is hoping his side can make the leap to SEABL champions this season. The Lady Braves were SEABL runners up in 2013 before losing in the conference final last season, but a star-studded lineup has them right in the title fight this season. Bendigo Spirit players and Australian representatives Kelly Wilson and Tessa Lavey will both suit up for the Lady Braves this season, and the club has signed import Stacia Robertson as well as promising youngster Stephanie Bairstow. Bairstow is the brother of Chicago Bulls power forward Cameron, and is expected by Goodman to slot into the Lady Braves’ starting lineup. “I think our starting lineup is really strong and gives us a lot of versatility in what we can do,” he said. “If you look at a lineup with Tessa, Kerryn and Kelly, that is a strong and versatile group and then paired with Steph and Stacia we have a nice mix. “We will be smaller, any team that loses a six-foot-six (198cm) player like Alex Bunton would be, but I think the league as a whole has gone a bit smaller this year. “I think we will be able to exploit some teams with our pace and perimeter game, and defensively should be strong as well.” The Lady Braves have also retained a lot of young local talent,

STRONG PLAYER: Kerryn Harrington. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

grabbing Maddy Wild to add to the likes of Tahnee Cannon, Alex Strawhorn, Jess Mangan and Molly Greetham. Heather Oliver has returned to play netball for Sandhurst, Chantella Perera, Kelsey Sartori, Lasondra Barrett and Bunton have all departed, but Goodman believes the side can go all the way. “I think Friday against Ballarat is a real danger game, they have spent plenty of time together in the preseason and we haven’t had that kind of continuity,” he said. “I think this group has what it takes to win a championship, I go into every season thinking that the team is certainly a chance to win it all. “Hopefully this is the year we can break through.”

WEEKLY SPORT Eaglehawk gears up for big test EAGLEHAWK faces the biggest test in Bendigo Football this weekend when it travels to Flight Centre Park on Sunday to tackle Strathfieldsaye in round two of the BFNL season. The Two Blues recorded a monster 102-point win over South bendigo after a slow start in round one, piling on 17.15 to the Bloods’ 2.5 after quarter time at Canterbury Park. Borough coach Luke Monaghan said he was happy with the start to the year for his side, especially after getting out of the blocks somewhat sluggishly. “We were reasonably happy, no side is going to say no to a 100-point win in round one,” Monaghan said. “The guys that we brought in fitted in pretty nicely, but credit to South they put some good structures in place especially early. “For them to have over 30 forward entries for only three goals showed how well our defence played.” A young Eaglehawk side played attacking, exciting football that led them to the finals last season and Monaghan recruited to fill needs in the list. He strengthened the side through the spine, picking up full forward Matt Gretgrix, versatile big man Chris Hudson, full back Tim Hill, Cam Milward and Nathan O’Brien. Coming up against the Storm is the toughest task in the BFNL, but Monaghan said it may be a positive. “To play Storm out there on their ground is never easy, but you have to play every team twice so it doesn’t matter too much when you catch them,” he said. “If anything it may be a positive early in the year because you get a sense of where you are at. They are the bench mark, but I think our boys are looking forward to testing themselves.” In Saturday’s round two matches, Gisborne and Maryborough will both try to record their first wins at Gardiner Reserve; Kangaroo Flat hosts Castlemaine under lights and Sandhurst heads down the Calder to tackle Kyneton at the Showgrounds. South Bendigo will also play Golden Square, on a special occasion for the Bloods at Harry Trott Oval. The Bloods will he hosting some legends of the club, in celebration of the team’s 1990 seniors, reserves and under-18 premiership triumphs, 25 years after the impressive feat was recorded.

Cyclone no barrier By JOEL PETERSON

THE Oceania region’s best table tennis players will converge on Bendigo this weekend for the annual ITTF Oceania Cup and Championships at Bendigo Stadium. The event will be held in Bendigo for the third and final time, and has this year added the Para Table Tennis Championships for the first time. Along with Australian Olympian and former winner William Henzell and 24-year-old Victorian able-bodied and para athlete Melissa Tapper, Yoshua Shing has one of the more fascinating stories heading into the tournament. The 24-year-old native of Vanuatu was one of thousands devastated by Cyclone Pam that recently lashed the Pacific island nation as a category five storm, the strongest on the tropical cyclone scale. However thanks to the support of ITTF-Oceania, Shing will be attending the event, granted his visa application goes through. “Cyclone Pam has really damaged our training centre but that

TOUGH IN TRAINING: Yoshua Shing. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

won’t stop me,” he said. “Recently after the disaster, we’ve managed to clean up some space and started training again but without electricity. “In the community where I live, most homes have flown away, even some concrete buildings; all the fruit trees and all the gardens are clean, nothing is left.”

The sport, as a whole, has thrown its support behind Shing and Vanuatu itself. “Many athletes from throughout Oceania have already confirmed their assistance towards Vanuatu and many will be looking to make equipment donations to assist the National Team to be able to continue their training,” the

International Table Tennis Federation’s Michael Brown said. The 2015 ITTF-Oceania Cup and Para Table Tennis Championships will see prize money totalling more than $25,000AU, increasing from $20,000AU at the 2014 event. The championships run from Friday to Sunday, with tickets available at the stadium box office.
