BENDIGO residents have been encouraged to shop and eat local this weekend as a show of support for traders impacted by last weekend’s opposing rallies that disrupted business in the CBD. The rallies attracted more than 650 people to the city centre, with about 350 police brought in from around the state and roadblocks put in place on Friday night.

Residents urged to support CBD

Some traders remain frustrated at the decision to enforce the blockade from Friday evening. Although some instances of violence erupted between the two groups, with police using capsicum spray on one occasion to subdue protesters, no arrests were made.

A joint push from Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters and Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox for people to shop local this weekend hopes to attract shoppers back to the city centre, after businesses in affected areas reported significant losses on the day.

The new Eat.Drink.Shop.Bendigo initiative aims to help small businesses bounce back over the Father’s Day weekend. “The weekend was heartbreaking, violence should always be condemned,” Ms Chesters said. “And people locally were too

scared to come into the city. “That’s what happened, people from outside from the far right and far left came into our town and brought their fight from Melbourne to our town. “And that meant that a lot of people stayed away, so our local traders were hit hard on Saturday.” She encouraged locals and visitors alike to shop and dine at local retailers and eateries. Continued Page 5

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, September 4, 2015

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Springing in to sales

LOCAL agents have wasted no time in launching into what’s expected to be a busy spring selling season for property in the Bendigo region. Six auctions are scheduled for this weekend, including a threebedroom cream brick home set on half an acre at 110 Lockwood Road, Kangaroo Flat (Tweed Sutherland First National, 11am Saturday), a two-bedroom clinker brick classic at 3 Pine Street, Quarry Hill (DCK Real Estate, 12.30pm Saturday), a three-bedroom home within walking distance of the new hospital set on a large block of about 2550 square metres at 10 Caledonia Street, (DCK Real Estate, 11.30am Saturday), a four-bedroom property on about 753 square metres at 100 Maple Street Golden Square, (The Professionals, 1pm Saturday), a 2.5 hectare (approx.) lifestyle property at 89 Queen Street, Mandurang South (Elders Bendigo, Saturday, 10.30am) and a beautiful rammed earth home set on about 21 acres at 46 Gerber Court, Huntly/Bagshot (Elders Bendigo, 1pm Saturday). BENDIGO’S median house price surged almost 13 per cent during the first three months of this year, according to data released by the Valuer General’s office this week. Country Victoria’s median

house price decreased by 1.6 per cent to $300,000 in the March 2015 quarter, while the 12 months to March 2015, the median house price in country Victoria remained unchanged at $300,000. The number of country Victorian house sales for the March 2015 quarter is expected to be 6420, which is 16.3 per cent more than the March 2014 quarter. Regional city housing markets continued to show significant variations for the March 2015 quarter. While Bendigo median house prices increased by 12.7 per cent in the March quarter, it remains unchanged at $385,000 for the 12 months to march 2015. Strathdale was the star performer for the Bendigo market, with the median price up 22.9 per cent over 12 months and 18.2 per cent for the March quarter, while in White Hills the median price rose 12.4 per cent over 12 months, but fell 1.5 per cent in the three months to March 2015. Geelong’s median was up 12.3 per cent for the March 2015 quarter, and a whopping 16.2 per cent for the 12 month period. GREATER Bendigo experienced a 69 per cent jump in the value of building permits issued in 201415 compared with the previous financial year, propelling the city

EXCEPTIONAL: 46 Gerber Court will be auctioned on Saturday. into the top 10 Victorian municipalities by value of building permits. In the 2014-15 financial year $860 million of building permits were reported to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) as issued in the City of Greater Bendigo, compared with the $509 million reported in 2013-14. Melbourne City Council leads the way with $3.28 billion in permits, ahead of Greater Geelong and Boroondara. VBA chief executive officer, Prue Digby, said that with $1bplus building permits reported in 10 per cent of the state’s 79 local government areas it was not surprising the total value of building permits reported as issued in 201415 was a record $28b. In addition to moving into the top 10 by value of building permits reported overall, Greater Bendigo: • Maintained second spot among regional municipalities by total cost of domestic (houses) building work ($302 million – 4.6 per cent higher than the $289 million in 2013-14; and • Jumped to third spot from

fifth for the value of domestic (houses – alterations and extensions) work with $25.8 million, 17 per cent higher than the $22.1 million in 2013-14. WITH the lowest interest rates in 50 years, more Australians are looking to invest in the property market. For those considering investing, the ideal property combines a low purchase price and a high weekly rental, delivering a high yield to investors. Knowing the gross yield – that is, a property’s annual rental as a percentage of the purchase price – is important for financial planning and can help you choose and compare investment properties. So, for example, a property costing $300,000 and renting for $9000 a year would have a gross rental yield of three per cent. Generally, the higher the rental yield, the more attractive the property is to investors. Craig Webster Chairman, Bendigo chapter, REIV

Call for poison probe

THE Bendigo and District Environment Council is calling for a royal commission into the levels of arsenic in drinking tanks and soil at properties in Woodvale. Results from a study commissioned Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning (DEWLP) that were released last month found that of 54 drinking tanks that were tested in the vicinity of Woodvale evaporation ponds, 43 contained traces of arsenic. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reviewed the final report and concluded that “the testing found there were no rainwater tanks that had arsenic above the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines level” and that the was “no public health risk”. However Woodvale residents re-

main concerned the levels of arsenic present in the tanks and in topsoil could be putting their health in jeopardy. Bendigo and District Environment Council mining spokesman Simon Perrin said he was concerned about the findings, as arsenic is a known carcinogen. He said environmental consulting firm Senversa had undertaken the study, which included tanks and soil within a one kilometre radius of the ponds. “They found arsenic in 80 per cent of water tanks out there,” Dr Perrin said. “The average was two micrograms per litre so that’s within the Australian drinking water standards. “Arsenic under three micrograms per litre is probably safe. There are eight tanks that have arsenic with three micrograms a litre

or greater.” Dr Perrin said the soil test results also posed questions as to how the arsenic could be affecting the health of Woodvale residents. “The other problem with the Senversa soil tests... is the amount of arsenic in their baseline testing,

The health effects of exposure to arsenic over a long period can include cancer, coronary artery disease and emphysema. “It’s now getting to a stage where it could actually be risking their health,” Dr Perrin said. “We don’t know what illnesses

I’ve had my tanks tested privately for the past 10 years and they’ve shown up with toxic levels

the average was 6.6 milligrams per kilogram,” he said. “The average for the top soil, so the first 10 centimetres, was something like 15. Where did that additional arsenic come from? “Presumably, it’s come off the ponds and it’s been airborne. And if it’s been airborne, people have been breathing and inhaling the stuff.”

are out there.” Woodvale resident Vanessa Richardson said her tanks were not tested as part of the study, however she has had them privately tested over the past 10 years. “I’ve had my tanks tested privately for the past 10 years and they’ve shown up with toxic levels of heavy metals,” she said.

Rohullah raises the profile ROHULLAH Hussani passed through Bendigo this week to raise awareness for the rights of refugees. Last year Hazara refugee Rohullah rode from Swan Hill to Canberra to present a petition to Andrew Broad MP and is repeating the trip now. This time round he has much more support with the community getting behind his long bike ride. He has even been sponsored by a cafe in his area as well as people donating to the cause. “We want people to know we do not come to Australia to be a burden, we come to participate and to contribute to this beautiful country,” Rohullah said. Rohullah will attempt to do at least 120 kilometres a day and on a good day he aims to reach 180km but that is nothing compared to what he did to survive. Rohullah was 14 when he fled from Afghanistan as he risked his life to cross the border in search of safety. After three years in limbo Rohullah was recognised as a refugee by the Refugee Review Tribunal in June this year. “I want to let the government know that we are human too, that we, like all people, want to be part of a community and be able to support our families,” Rohullah said. While in Bendigo, Rohullah spoke at a school and met with staff and friends at CatholicCare Sandhurst to share his story and journey.

By LAURA HURLEY

“As a result of that, for 10 years I’ve been buying my water, trucking it in specifically for drinking water.” She said residents had expressed dissatisfaction at a lack of response from regulatory authorities regarding the arsenic detected at community meetings. “We know we’ve got a pollution problem, it’s in our face, we know it,” Ms Richardson said. “We would like another test done where we have input, and we want the area rehabilitated.” DEWLP indicated that it is working with council to find interim solutions and longer term solutions to the issues caused by the rising groundwater. Advice for residents from the DHHS following the report indicated residents should “maintain their tanks and to regularly test their private drinking water supply”.

Rohullah will have to deal with all different kind of conditions on his long journey but he doesn’t care, keeping the refugees in the detention centres as his main inspiration to push through.

LODDON and the Central Goldfields have been revealed as having the highest rates of cardiac arrest in Victoria, according to statistics taken from Ambulance Victoria data. The latest Victorian Heart Maps, released earlier this week, used statistics taken from the Ambulance Victoria over the past six years and painted a concerning picture of central Victoria. Central Goldfields was found to have the highest rates of cardiac arrest in the state, with Loddon ranking second, and Loddon was found to have the highest rates of heart attack in Victoria. The Greater Bendigo local government area fared better than Loddon and Central Goldfields, ranked 46 in the rates of cardiac arrest and 28 in the rates of heart attack. State Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford said the results were concerning, particularly in Loddon Shire. “I was really alarmed to see that Loddon Shire had the highest instance of heart attacks in the state,” she said. State health minister Jill Hennessy said the maps are an important tool for government and organisations like the Heart Foundation to address the burden of heart disease. “These figures show that, sadly, there is a link between areas of social disadvantage and high rates of heart disease and cardiac arrest,” minister Hennessy said.

Heart Foundation chief executive Diana Heggie said the results highlighted the need for further education about preventing cardiac disease. “The findings reinforce the need for greater emphasis on prevention and also enabling communities to respond to emergencies,” Ms Heggie said. “The Heart Foundation believes that greater access to defibrillators should form part of the strategy to address the rates of cardiac arrest in Victoria.” With an increased focus this week during Men’s Health Week, the Cancer Council Victoria has released a report that calculates the risk of a Victorian developing cancer by a specified age, depending on their age and gender. The report found Victorian men in their mid-60s have a one in six chance of developing cancer within the next decade, and that 65-year-old Victorian men have a seven per cent chance of developing cancer within the next five years and a 17 per cent chance of developing cancer within the next decade. Cancer Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper said the findings help put cancer risk into perspective for Victorians. “Leading a healthy lifestyle can’t guarantee someone won’t get cancer, but we can certainly stack the odds in our favour by avoiding cigarettes and alcohol,” Mr Harper said.

the operation, we had to mitigate as much risk as possible.” The Match Bar and Bakehouse owner Jock Clark labelled the decision to place the roadblocks on Friday as “total overkill”, and said the business had experienced significant losses as a result. “I lost thousands of dollars in trade on Friday and Saturday,” Mr Clark said. “We had a meeting with the cops on Wednesday where we were advised the roadblocks would be out on late Friday evening. “They had the roadblocks out at 5.30pm, and we saw no-one on the street until about 12pm on Saturday. ‘We had regulars jump the barricades in order to get in.” Mr Clark praised the efforts of front line police during the rallies, and said he believed impacted businesses should be entitled to compensation. City of Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox also praised the efforts of police, and said although he questioned the decision to place the roadblocks on Friday, he believed it was right decision. “I was a little bit concerned that

BUSINESSES in Bendigo’s CBD have expressed frustration at roadblocks placed around the city centre last Friday night in preparation for the weekend’s rallies. Victoria Police consulted with business owners in the affected areas, and warned them the blocks would be put in place on the Friday in preparation for last Saturday’s rallies. Bendigo police’ Acting Senior Sergeant Adam Woods said the decision was made to mitigate potential risks during the protests. “It was an operational decision, so that we were able to clear that area in time for the protest,” Sen Sgt Woods said. “It was to mitigate risks of vehicles left there overnight.” He said police understood the frustrations expressed by some of the impacted eateries and retailers, however made the decision due to the scale of the operation. “We understand their frustration – this was one of the biggest police operations outside of metropolitan Melbourne,” he said. “Unfortunately with the size of

intelligence and their experience that they have, in hindsight, I should never have questioned that.”

Manufacturing makes good sense FEDERAL shadow minister for higher education and innovation Kim Carr visited Bendigo this week to discuss the future of manufacturing in Victoria. Mr Carr joined Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters at a roundtable discussion with industry leaders to consider Labor’s commitment to manufacturing in the lead up to next year’s election. Visiting Keech Innovation Centre, Mr Carr criticised the federal government for its policies regarding manufacturing and called on it to support local jobs. “Australian manufacturing has a bright future if the right policy settings are put in place,” Mr Carr said. “That’s what’s required here – that the Australian government stumps up its responsibility to ensure that it stand by firms such as this.” Mr Carr named Keech as an example of an industry leader in innovative technologies, and an example of what manufacturing in Bendigo has to offer. “Firms like this at Keech are able to demonstrate what can be done,” he said. “This is the sort of experi-

is support for those businesses and the jobs they create.” Mr Carr announced Labor’s commitment to establish a $500 million Smart Investment Fund to partner with venture capitalists and fund managers to invest

ence we know can replicate if the government gets behind Australian manufacturing.” Ms Chesters said despite struggling industry in Geelong and the Latrobe Valley, she expected manufacturing on Bendigo to continue to perform strongly. “I’m really proud of our Bendigo manufacturers. People keep saying doom and gloom… but not here in Bendigo,” she said. “(Keech) are building products the world wants, and what we need to see from government

in early stage innovation and high potential companies. He said the fund was to give new companies a head start in establishing themselves. “That’s exactly the sort of program where the government stands behind industry to attract new industry,” he said. “We have lots of start ups in this country and new businesses trying to get ahead, but they can’t get access to bank finance. “We want to see more attention paid to these companies... to attract investment capital.”

Backing Bendigo business 3From Page 1 “Let’s get out in our town, let’s buy. It’s Father’s Day. Take dad out for dinner, take dad out for lunch over the weekend in town. Last minute Father’s Day shopping, do it locally,” she said. “Let’s buy local, let’s support our local businesses. People who missed out last weekend, let’s support this weekend.” Cr Cox agreed the impact on local traders had been heavy, however he commended Victoria Police for their planning and hard work. “So it’s disappointing that business

So all in all from that point of view people were kept safe and the whole show went ahead. “The weekend’s events do not fairly represent our city. Bendigo continues to be a wonderful and very welcoming place to live, so I hope residents will return to the streets this weekend and show their support for local traders.”

Forest support grows

THE City of Greater Bendigo remains supportive of the push for the state government to consider adding the iconic Wellsford Forest to the Greater Bendigo National Park. Council last year supported a motion requesting the government reassess the conservation status and land category for the forest. It also wrote to the then coalition government and asked that the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) be asked to carry out a review of the land status of the forest. A council spokesman this week said the organisation un-

derstands that the new Minister has given a commitment to request VEAC to review the conservation status of a series of sites, including the Wellsford, at the conclusion of VEAC’s current

tion groups have lobbied successive Victorian Governments to protect the Wellsford Forest since about 2002. Department of Environment Land Water and Planning

Council last year supported a motion requesting the government reassess the conservation status

investigation. This is expected to occur by June next year. In May 2014, then mayor, Barry Lyons said if the Wellsford Forest was reclassified as a national park, the area would be better protected for future generations. He also noted that conserva-

(DEWLP) plans to conduct a burn off in the Wellsford Forest, including an area with a stand of pre-European settlement trees were last week called off. Local conservationists believe this area, in the middle of the park, did not pose a fire threat as the ground cover or for-

est understorey was not near the assets of any local communities or industries, and the area is still in a state of recovery after the many years of exploitation and neglect. The group also believes the probability of wildfire in the Wellsford forest block is very low. Back in 2009 DEWLP, then DEPI, also reached an agreement with the Bendigo Field Naturalists and Bendigo District Environment Council to keep the area of the Big Trees a burn-free site. The agreement also stopped the burning of the 300 metre by 200 metre wide side strip adjacent to Murphys Road because it was important bird habitat.

HIGHLIGHTING A CAUSE DONATELIFE Victoria will unveil a regional partnership with Force of Destiny, beginning this Sunday in Bendigo. The film directed by Paul Cox, stars David Wenham, Shahana Goswami and Jacqueline McKenzie, and tells the semi-autobiographical story of an artist who finds love while on the transplant waiting list. The film launched at the Melbourne International Film Festival to a sold-out Melbourne audience and high praise from critics. Force of Destiny underscores the importance of clear decision-making and talking to loved ones regarding organ and tissue donation wishes. It also highlights the life-changing impact transplantation can have, especially significant considering the 1600 Australians currently on transplant waiting lists. Force of Destiny, featuring a Q&A session, starts at 4pm on Sunday at the Bendigo Cinemas.

FOCUS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY THE City of Greater Bendigo will host Repower: Considering Renewable Energy at the Discovery Science and Technology Centre on Saturday, as part of the development of a new environment strategy. Residents are invited to Discovery from 12.30pm to 4pm to find out more about renewable energy including solar, battery, storage, wind power, communityowned solar and much more. The forum will also feature a Tesla – a completely electric vehicle. Other guests include representatives from Windlab, Bendigo Sustainability Group, Powercor, Moreland Energy Foundation and the Alternative Technology Association.

PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY

READY FOR ROWE: The band and choir rehearse.

Normie tunes in for Ulumbarra concert THE Forever Young Rock Choir will be taking to stage at the Ulumbarra Theatre on September 16, and will be joined by popular sixties rocker Normie Rowe. Alongside the Girton Grammar String Orchestra and rock band, the choir and Mr Rowe have been preparing for months, re-

hearsing an all Australian repertoire including Beds are Burning, Down Under, Don’t Dream It’s Over, Solid Rock, My Happiness, To Love Somebody and Friday on My Mind. The Forever Young Choir was established in 2011 by the school’s head of junior music Laura Dusseljee.

It is a community choir made up of about 80 senior citizens, the youngest being 64 and oldest 94. They are accompanied by the rock band Standing Room Only and the Senior String Orchestra from Girton Grammar Senior School.

NON-profit groups are invited to attend a City of Greater Bendigo network forum next Wednesday, September 9 at the All Seasons Hotel at 12.15pm. The forum, which is the second in a series of three, aims to celebrate the importance of local community groups and promote long term sustainability by providing them with an opportunity to interact and foster mutually supportive relationships. Guest speaker is Community Foundation for Central Victoria executive officer Ann Lansberry. There are only 30 places available and light lunch will be provided. To register, email Andrew Plant at a.plant@bendigo. vic.gov.au or phone 5434 6111 by Friday, September 4.

Follow the legacy

Legacy collectors have been on the streets this week, furthering a very important cause. Legacy is a non-government organisation run by volunteers and relies on donations from the public to continue its work. Volunteers will be at points in shopping precincts and various retail outlets around Bendigo today and tomorrow selling Legacy badges and other related merchandise. The group is a charitable organisation formed in 1923 by soldiers who had returned from the war. Legacy was originally established for the sole purpose of caring for the widows and families of their mates who had ei-

within the study of the arts, that being of music, dance, drama, media and visual arts. This program is similar to the Athlete Development Program, with this one being to help develop, guide and inspire the artists. Bendigo South East

Help for mothers

WOMEN in Africa will be helped in childbirth, thanks to the Zonta Club. The Bendigo group is holding a birthing kits assembly day on Saturday at Bendigo Senior Secondary College’s Language Centre. The club makes the kits for birth attendents in the Republic of Congo and surrounding areas. This is the second time this year the club has held an assembly and they aim to produce 2000 kits this time. Within the past year they have completed 6000 kits. Birthing kit coordinator, Irene McKinna, said the club had made a difference to an enormous amount of women’s lives. “Birthing kits are something we are really passionate about,” she said. “The Zonta Club is part of a health initiative to assist in empowering women and giving an opportunity to understand the importance of health before, during and after pregnancy.”

STUDENTS from St Monica’s Primary School have hand crafted pottery crosses at Bendigo Pottery as part of a school community art project this week. The individual artworks will be collected together in the next few months to brighten up a bare wall in the school. The students first watched a demonstration at the Bendigo Pot-

supportive member of the community in tery before they cut their own cross out of clay. Each student then sculpted and decorated their crosses using a variety of sculpting tools. St Monica’s principal, Reuben Johnson, said the community project will be something that will be a part of the school for a long time. “The project has engaged our whole school

community and each of our students has been able to express their individual creativity,” Mr Johnson said. The idea originally came from a student’s parent, Karen Egan, at a school board meeting which quickly became a community collaboration. It has won the support of the Parents and Friends Association, St Monica’s

Cutting landfill RADIUS Bendigo has joined forces with Future Employment Opportunities to help reduce the amount of e-waste going into Bendigo’s landfill. The recently forged partnership is also providing a number of employment opportunities across both enterprises, delivering both social and economic outcomes. Radius Bendigo financial operations manager David Hancock labelled the partnership “a fantastic arrangement” and said both organisations hoped to see it continue for years to come. “Radius Disability Services and Future Employment Opportunities have come into partnership since the new financial year,” Mr Hancock said.

“The aim is to basically synergise our operations together. “Initially this a 12-month partnership with the view of extending – we’re looking for a long term partnership between the two entities.” The e-waste, including computers and electronics, is collected on site at the Eaglehawk Eco Centre or picked up by Radius. Computers that can be refurbished are sold through FEO’S computer repair business, and anything beyond repair is recycled by Radius. Mr Hancock said the partnership would mean about 240 tonnes of e-waste would be diverted from landfill a year. “Because of the current co-

regulations there was a need for us to look for a provider who could provide e-waste opportunities and FEO had excess stock at their site,” he said. “And they were looking to go down a different path in terms of their e-waste provisions, so a partnership was formed under the understanding we would collect all the TVs and e-waste provisions.” Eaglehawk Recycling Shop manager Peter Buck said the strength of the partnership between Radius and FEO was that it provided further job opportunities in the Bendigo region whilst benefitting local social enterprises. “We’re keeping it local, that’s how this whole thing was born,” Mr Buck said.

It’s time to pump up your tyres, dust off your bike and join the Ride for Dad on Saturday as part of Men’s Health Week. Families are encouraged to join the ride starting at Wolstencroft Reserve, corner of Rodney Street and Havlin Street East, Flora Hill. Participants have the option of riding to Spring Gully or walking to Ewing Park, return trips designed to be six kilometres for the bike ride and the walk two kilometres. The ride gets under way at 10am, there will be a free barbecue lunch at noon and live music until 2pm. Along the way to Spring Gully the BMX club will give a demonstration at the jumps park, the Mountain Bike Club will have information on new trail developments and offer an optional guided ride around the beginners loop in Spring Gully. Bike Force and free-wheeling family fun are offering free bike maintenance checks. Bike Bendigo president Geoff O’Sullivan said participants don’t need to be super fit or have the best bike to take part. “This is an opportunity to enjoy a bike ride with family and friends, to take in our great natural assets along the Spring Gully Creek Trail,” he said. “Participants can ride as far as they wish, completing single or multiple loops along the trail, which is relatively flat, very safe and protected from the road and passing cars. There will be assistance from marshals attending the few road crossing points.” For catering and planning purposes, Bike Bendigo asks Ride for Dad participants to register their interest via www. bendigo.vic.gov.au/healthytogether. Time to step up for a Run For Dad

ART WORKS: Guan Wei won the 2015 Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize with Beach 5. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

In memory of Arthur By Dianne Dempsey

There is a beautiful marriage which has been going on since 2003 between the Bendigo Art Gallery and the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize. Held every two years, the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize is Australia’s richest open painting prize, awarding a generous acquisitive cash prize of $50,000. Judges commented that Guan Wei’s work was chosen as this year’s winning entry for its “strong cultural message”.

“It is a painting about Australia and the idea of cultural transformation by a Chinese born Australian artist, that speaks to us about the changing nature of Australian life,” the judges said. By acquiring the winning artwork the Bendigo Art Gallery has been able to enhance its rich and electric collection, and the Guy family, patrons of the prize, have continued to honour the memory of Arthur Guy. The prize was established by Allen Guy CBE (1917-2007) to honour his brother Arthur’s

memory. Born in 1914 Arthur was educated at Camp Hill State School and then at Ballarat Grammar School. During World War II he was shot down and killed on a bomber mission, aged 30. The family never forgot him nor stopped loving him and see the prize as a precious opportunity to perpetuate his name. Announced last Friday, the prize attracted a shortlist of 30 works from an original pool of over 250 entrants from across Australia.

Judges included Peter Guy, representing the Guy family, Sydney Morning Herald art critic John McDonald and local art luminaries. Previous winners of the prize include Stieg Persson (2003), Dale Frank (2005), Stephen Bush (2007), Jan Nelson (2009), Tim Johnson (2011) and Chris Bond (2013). Beach 5 and works from the shortlisted artists are on display at Bendigo Art Gallery in the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize exhibition from August 29 to November 1.

The Run For Dad is this weekend. Anyone wishing to support men’s health still has time to enter and help to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research. The local event is a joint initiative of St John of God Hospital and Athletics Bendigo as part of Men’s Health Week and is taking place at Bendigo Jockey Club. The event aims to highlight health issues men face. With only two days to go, organisers are hoping for a good turnout. The racecourse will open at 9am and will start at 10am with the 7.5 kilometre run followed by the 3.75km walk at 10.30am. Last year’s event raised $5000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and organisers are hopeful that this year’s event will exceed that. Organisers hope the publicity around

the event as well as the event itself will encourage men to look after their health. It only takes a simple blood test to check your prostate. At the finish the Lions Club will be ready to dish up breakfast as part of your entry fee. Members of the Bendigo Prostate support group will be handing out medals sponsored to all finishers of both walk and run. Entry is on line at athleticsbendigo. org.au entry fees are $15 for under-16s, over 16 $30, and $70 for a family. Entry on the day is available at an increased cost of $30 for under-16 $50 for over 16 and $120 for a family.

IN AMERICA: Some of the VCC students who are travelling to the US.

Students head to the states Last Friday 19 students, two members of staff and three parents from Victory Christian College, departed for the USA. This one-month study trip will be an exciting and amazing opportunity for all students involved. They are first travelling to Dallas, Texas where they will go to the Six Flags Amusement Park, Potters House Church and attend a baseball game. Then it’s on to Tulsa, Oklahoma where they will spend most of their time.

In Tulsa, students have been allocated host families where they will stay and go to school for about two weeks. In this time students will join in activities such as daily classes, cheerleading, American football, track, softball, volleyball and specialist music programs. Halfway through the time in Tulsa they are going on a road trip to Kansas City. This is where they will do some major shopping as well as check out the Wooloroc Museum and an NFL game between the Denver Broncos

and Kansas City Chiefs. In the last four days of the trip they will stay in Los Angeles. This is the most anticipated part of the trip among the students, and it is where they will go to Disney Land, Universal Studios, Santa Monica Beach and have a general tour around the Hollywood Hills. I personally am so excited for this amazing opportunity and am so grateful to the teachers and my parents who have made this happen. – Sarah Swayn Year 10

Backing for youngsters THE state government has allocated $130,000 to the HEY Project Bendigo to integrate and co-ordinate service provision for LGBTI young people in the wider Bendigo area. This grant is part of a $1.2 million state-wide initiative to promote the rights, health and wellbeing of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) Victorians. The funding will go to groups and organisations across Victoria under the Healthy Equal Youth (HEY) project. The HEY Project aims to raise awareness, promote acceptance of diversity, eliminate stigma and discrimination, and improve mental health, including tackling suicide in young LGBTI people. Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards said she looked forward to watching the project grow. “This is incredibly important work, and this funding will allow the HEY Project in Bendigo to support more young people and have a bigger impact on our community.’’ The $1.2m in funding will allow organisations such as Bendigo’s HEY Project to provide more resources and information to support local LGBTI young people, and establish local youth groups using web-based social media strategies to engage and develop youth leadership. Mental Health minister Martin Foley said equal rights for LGBTI Victorians are not negotiable. ‘’We want to give young LGBTI people the support they need to be themselves and live in a society that respects them,” he said. “We’re committed to removing discrimination against LGBTI people from Victorian laws, and these grants will support work to remove it from society.” Mr Foley said statistics show that young LGBTI people are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide, and that this is often driven by fear of discrimination and bullying.

Leaders step out in Canberra

LEADERS: Loddon Murray Community Leadership members with MP Lisa Chesters in Canberra.

NINE leaders from Bendigo and surrounds have joined other leaders from the region on an eye-opening study tour to Canberra. The Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program trip included briefings with CSIRO, the Murray Darling Basin Authority, the American Embassy and more. They also had afternoon tea with prime minister Tony Abbott as well as Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove. As part of the program

Time to ride smarter, not harder SO you are a weekend cyclist who also gets out during the week. But each time you head out it seems like hard work and everyone else looks to be doing it easier than you are. Guess what – some are and others are still working hard but they look like they are enjoying themselves. Being mentored by an experienced cyclist will help improve your riding and make it a more enjoyable experience for you. Ask a cycling mate or an experienced cyclist you respect for some tips or help and I am sure you will find it a rewarding experience for you both. Or call into to your local cycling

bendigo store and ask about coaching. But first of all get your bike set up right, seat height, handle bar position, tyres checked and pumped, chained and bike cleaned, ready to go. There will be those in your bunch that are finding the faster flat ride easy and the hills very tough and other cyclists enjoying the challenge of hills and so they put in an extra effort. A trained or experienced cyclist will talk to you about cadence (how fast you’re spinning the pedals – connect up your cadence meter).

They will also talk about which gear to use at what time and while it may take some adjustment, your cycling will benefit and so will your legs. Watch most of the professional riders and they seem to “spin” as they often use the small ring/lower gearing as this takes the load off your legs and can give you that effort time when required. An experienced cyclist will also help you with your climbing efforts and guide you through your gear selections. They’ll talk you through the “kick” effort sometimes required toward the top of the climb so you can beat your mates to the top. The same principles can be ap-

plied to flat riding. So talk to those around you in the bunch and see what they are doing to improve their cycling in this wonderful pastime.

You don’t need to compete at the top level to be competitive or to grow in your chosen sport – just enjoy it and be a smarter rider. - Geoff O’Sullivan

Counterpoint to hate Last Saturday, while our fantastic Bendigo police kept the peace at the anti-Islam rally and counter protest, at the “Fill this space with respect” community gathering, families and genuine Bendigonians of all ages and walks of life enjoyed a free barbecue, music, colourful children’s activities, great conviviality, informed conversation and an enlightened, bravely self-deprecating speaker in Go Back To Where You Came From participant, Andrew Jackson. I was proud to be part of a gathering at which there was no sloganchanting and no one screaming obscenities over a loud-speaker. There was no belligerent hatebased patriotism, and no flag-wearing City of Greater Bendigo councillor. There were no extremist flag-festooned “patriots” or mask-wearing “socialists” from who-knows-where furthering their own dubious agendas at Bendigo’s reputational expense. There was no police presence, no flag-burning, no capsicum spray, no violence, and, somewhat unsurprisingly, very little media attention. Despite our smaller numbers, I remain convinced that we represent the majority of Bendigo residents who are diverse, inclusive and respectful. Many thanks to Nathan Wingrave, Tash Joyce and the many other organisers who pulled together this perfect counter-point to ignorance and aggression. Michelle Goldsmith, Eaglehawk

Lake needs help Lake Eppalock needs everyone’s help. Daniel Andrews can spend millions on tourism for Melbourne but what does Central Victoria get? We have a beautiful lake that generates $35.6 million with a $68.5M flow-on per annum to Bendigo and surrounding towns. (source Bendigo council). The lake is currently at 43.56 per cent and by the beginning of December it will be 36 per cent, by the end of January 26 per cent. The lake is expected to be at one per cent by this time next year if the current weather pattern continues there is a very grim chance that the lake will be at dead level sometime in 2016. Do we want to see a dry lake bed again and hundreds of jobs lost because businesses are struggling or just gone broke? What about the wellbeing and health of these people that rely on the lake to survive?

The facebook page “Save Lake Eppalock” is working tirelessly on this disaster but needs more help. Why not email our water minister Lisa Neville and let her know what this lake means to you and Bendigo. The water is not going to farmers, it’s all being flushed away for environmental flows. The farmers have had 26 per cent of the lake, the environment has had 41 per cent. Yes the environment is important but what happens to the environment when the lake is dry? What about the environment of the rivers that feed Lake Eppalock? Has the DELWP and the water minister Lisa Neville thought of this at all or is it just the money side of the Campaspe River that is important? Shell Parker, Golden Square

Income lost from rally My thoughts are with the businesses of the CBD, that suffered damage to property and a loss of income over the weekend. Along with the staff members that lost wages. Mid-winter trading is tough, regardless, and I am sure that the added loss of Saturday trade will have an adverse, if not dramatic, effect on many a small business. I would be interested in hearing from Cr Elise Chapman, and how she can justify attending/supporting a rally that had such an adverse effect on the town’s economy, its private and public transport, its infrastructure and its potential future tourism. I believe that no matter your opinion on a subject itself, as a publicly elected figure, she should not be using her position to push her personal agenda, and should publicly apologise to the CBD traders and the people of Bendigo for encouraging public disorder. overwhelming support (84 per cent) for retention of the leisure centre. Will the City of Greater Bendigo Aquatic Centre project team now listen? Will councillors Fyffe and Lyons go against the wishes of the majority of their constituents? In the first instance councillors are elected by their constituents to represent their interests, how is the demolition of the leisure centre in the community interest? Councillors’ failure to do this should be a matter for their removal from office. Oh, and the economics of the “Taj Mahal” still won’t stack up. Colin Burns, Strathfieldsaye

Consult with community

Ideology and arrogance

It has been left to the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre group and local member Maree Edwards to do what council officers and councillors have failed to do – consult with the community. The Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre group has been saying for two years that the community did not want the leisure centre demolished and have been trying to have consultation with council officers and council. Its efforts have been ignored Now that the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre group and local member Maree Edwards are getting the community’s view which really shows how the community feels. There is

Tony Windsor has only said recently what a large majority of Australians are thinking – that this government is looking to take advantage of any unrest in the community, naturally or created, to avoid a political wipe-out. One only has to remember the recent government security committee wanting an “incident a week” in the lead up to the next election. The border farce incident is just another reminder of previous distractions such as “children overboard” and “weapons of mass destruction”. The immigration minister and the prime minister claimed they did not know what was happening re-

garding the border farce. If that is true, then this is but another example of incompetence. Now they are talking about dumping Hockey, who is only part of the problem. Abbott is the problem. Anybody would have thought that if 45 per cent of your colleagues voted for an empty chair, and not for the prime minister, then the stability of your party is a massive problem. As any “ordinary citizen” fully knows, blind ideology will only get you so far, then reality sets in, but that has not even crossed his mind. The only thing that the public is probably not going to object to all that much is a double dissolution election in March 2016. But all this does is once again illustrate their mindset, and dislocation from the voting public. They are simply totally incapable of working with people. The only thing that drives them is ideology, arrogance, blind belief, ignorance, insults, slogans, with any vision looked at through the rear vision mirror. Ken Price, Eaglehawk

than not, those who preach tolerance are those best at demonstrating intolerance: “Be quiet, you can’t say that, you should be tolerant of others.” Hmmm… yes… It seems that tolerance is indeed only labelled as such if it conforms to a popular political or ideological point of view. Anyone who does not conform is, by distorted definition, intolerant. While I do not in any way support actions of people who defame or sabotage to achieve their ends, it was interesting to read on the very next page, an editorial describing such people with the kind of vitriol ascribed to them. I do, however, believe that people only resort to such actions when their voice is suppressed, by “the tolerant”, and they feel they are left with no other alternative to make it heard. The only solution, in a truly tolerant (and therefore democratic) society, is to enable and encourage all to be heard without fear or favour. Whatever issue arises, whatever changes are being offered to be introduced to our community, we need wise leaders who will listen objectively to all arguments, however unpalatable they may seem to a particular point of view, and weigh up what benefits are to be gained from acceptance of the change, and what ramifications or consequences are likely or certain to occur as a result. Rally for Bendigo THERE are some who believe last weekend’s rowdy protest scenes portray our city in a damaging light that could have long term implications for Bendigo. That’s a view not shared by us all. Rowdy yes. Unpleasant yes. But long-lasting? No. There’s no doubt this was not a pretty sight, but for all the controversy and fuss in the build-up, the opposing rallies actually passed without too many major concerns, save for the extremely unfortunate and disappointing negative impact on local trade. Democracy is something very powerful – certainly far more powerful than anything either side could muster last Saturday. The community response in the immediate aftermath of the protests

Editorial Comment has been wonderful. It says a lot about local residents who want to pitch in and offer their support to those who were adversely impacted by the upheaval. It says a lot about people’s willingness to move on and to put the events of last weekend behind them, and to set about helping right the ship of misfortune and lost business experienced by many in the heart of our city. Most importantly, it says Bendigo won’t be beaten. Those of us who live here know Bendigo is a far better place than the events of last weekend could other-

pk AFL holiday not sporting with Peter Kennedy

BENDIGO residents are right to embrace the concept of the local campaign encouraging us all to support businesses impacted by last weekend’s protests, but there’s a far bigger problem lurking on the horizon, just four weeks away. The AFL public holiday, scheduled for Friday, October 2. If those behind this weekend’s campaign were worried about the damage to business last Saturday afternoon, they should be deeply distressed at the likely ramifications of the full day’s trade many businesses will lose in another 28 days time. Shadow state minister for regional development, sport and veterans’ affairs, Damian Drum, yesterday spoke to the Victorian Parliament about his concerns for business, and especially small business, as the footy finals draw nigh. This is what he said: There is a radio station in Melbourne that broadcasts Billy Brownless and James Brayshaw behaving stupidly every week. They advertise their segment as “When sport meets stupid”. When I think about when sport meets stupid I think of the public holiday we are going to have for the parade before the AFL Grand Final. The closer we get to

this year’s AFL Grand Final the more ridicule and disbelief there is about this bizarre decision from the thought bubble that happened to crash through the mind of a would-be premier. It has been well stated that this holiday is going to cost the state’s economy nearly $1 billion when it can least afford it and when we know that the regional economy is slowing, that regional unemployment is growing and that the costs on small business are putting more

businesses take the advice of the minister and simply do not open. The Northern Region MP is not on his own in speaking out about the extra holiday and the likely impact for local business. A quick survey of business owners at my local coffee shop earlier this week after an early morning ride, and a quick ring around later on, found next to no support for the extra holiday. Practically no one wanted

The AFL did not want this public holiday and it still does not want it and more pressure on each of those small businesses. This is a public holiday that no-one asked for. This is a public holiday that the footballing public did not want. The AFL did not want this public holiday and it still does not want it. Victorian businesses do not want it. I have been inundated with complaints from Bendigo businesspeople who are venting their anger at a Labor government that is so out of touch that it has no idea of the pain it is inflicting on small businesses and also on casual employees who will lose their wages on a day when their businesses decide not to open – when their

Generally, it was agreed to be a case of “dammed if you do, and dammed if you don’t”. Perhaps we might need another campaign. twitter @peterkennedy23 pk@bendigopublishing.com

Gang of Youths on tap S

YDNEY rockers Gang Of Youths showcased why their first album debuted at number five on the ARIA charts earlier this year when they played Bendigo’s Taphouse last Thursday. The high-energy gig came after the group played a secret show from their mammoth tour bus as part of the future legends program, supported by Jack Daniels. The album, The Positions rocketed to fifth on the ARIA charts after its release in April before the band embarked on a huge national launch tour, and it is not hard to see why. The record was produced by Kevin McMahon, who has previously worked with indie outfits Real Estate and The Walkmen.

GANG OF YOUTHS The Positions has brilliant balance throughout, mixing hard rock drum beats and guitars with deep vocals and lasting messages. The album constantly changes tempo and takes you on a ride

from its opener, Vital Signs, which builds through stronger vocals throughout, to the more upbeat Poison Drum and The Diving Bell. Magnolia is another standout from the album, and was a crowd

favourite at Taphouse. A cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart was thrown in for good measure alongside the brooding and deeply emotional Knuckles White Dry. The band’s live performances are energetic and passionate, with frontman David Le’aupepe’s vocals providing the perfect foil to pounding drums and guitar but also blending seamlessly within slower pieces. Gang Of Youth’s diverse range of indie anthems translates perfectly to a live set, and their latest 24-gig national tour has been immensely popular so far. It continues through until September 19, but includes no more Victorian shows. - Joel Peterson

IRTON Grammar’s Junior School Performance Choir has been awarded the highest honour at the 2015 Royal South Street Eisteddfod in Ballarat. The annual competition featured performances from calisthenics to choirs and the choir was awarded the highest mark of all performances on the day and won both of their sections in the competition. Girton Grammar School headmaster Matthew Maruff said that a good choir can be the mark of a good school, especially in the junior years. “This is a really outstanding achievement for our junior school. The discipline required to produce quality sound from a young choir is no small feat,” he said.

“This year their performance has been lauded by internationally acclaimed opera star, Suzanne Johnston, and Douglas Heywood, OAM, as one of the finest children’s choirs they have heard in a very long time. “Mr Heywood cited the choir as an example of what other choirs should be aspiring to in terms of sound quality, diction, presentation, intonation, dynamic control and telling and selling the story.” Every week around 178 music lessons are conducted in the junior school and around 300 in the senior school. More than 100 performing arts performances are carried out each year within the school and the broader community.

OWNSIZING, cleaning out, or just in need of some extra cash are all good reasons to dust off those treasures and go to Collectables and Antiques. They have collectors for Australian predecimal coins and banknotes, war medals and medallions, vintage Swiss watches, gold and silver jewellery or coins, and small collectables like toys, snuff boxes, sovereign holders, and Australian and European art. Their worldwide network of collectors ensures they are able to secure the right price for your item. It could be a painting, jewellery, a rare coin or even small collectable items like a silver box they had recently, which was confirmed as Russian, and a buyer in New York was secured. This meant the best possible price for the seller. The group is often asked when it is the right time to sell. Invariably the answer is when you are. Market trends will dictate prices, but only you can decide when to cash in your items. Whether it is a large or small collection, whether it is your collection or inherited, whether it has rare items in it or not, they look forward to seeing you. VERY Tuesday the staff at the Weekly have an attempt at chequered Tuesday. I think it started in the design section. One at a time our glorious graphos started appearing in an array of garish colours. It was a pretty brave move, when Snappy Sam worked here she was so soundly ridiculed over her check shirt she never wore it again. Anyway, I am not sure who to blame, I think it was Mel, but the habit has spread. Old Nick has not joined in yet, he’s still wearing paisley shirts from his tripping in the 1960s, the GM says paisley is just check on acid anyway. All graphos and others around the building are checking in on the trend. Our new scribe Gizzy came in on Tuesday this week wearing a black and white check number, and I almost sent her home to change. It may be fine on a designer, but a journo, please, no. In the spirit of things I dragged out a shirt last week, but it was a bit mild and was not noticed. But then I am a bit short on check shirts. It goes back some time. When I first met the long-suffering Mrs Kendall, she was pretty firm on my shirt choice. Check shirts were out, literally in the bin in some cases. I was eager to please so I put up with it to a certain extent, but I was put out when she gave a large pile to one of her friends to wear in the

garden. Over the many years I have been with Mrs K I have tried now and again to introduce the check back into our lives. Once I shipped in a few sets of pyjamas from Marks and Spencer, and a few were of the chequered variety. “Oh look, Coco the Clown has arrived,” Mrs K said when she saw me wearing a magnificent red pair. This was her subtle way to let me know she had noticed, and another chance to rib me about something. Mysteriously, the red pair was ruined by the washing machine, the first

and only thing ever to be damaged by our brand-new Bosch. Funny that. Within the past year I bought a rather nice grey and black item and I just can’t seem to find it now. Who knows where it has gone? It may be on the tractor or down the back paddock, but somehow I feel Mrs K may have had a hand in its disappearance. I wouldn’t be surprised if the pug was chewing it in a corner somewhere. Whatever, it’s checked out of my life forever. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

HAVING just finished Oliver Sacks’ autobiography On the Move (2015) and then learning of his recent death I feel his passing keenly. I had just got to know him as it were. My predominant feeling is one of gratitude for the life of a man who has enriched the lives of so many others. Indeed to describe the people he has affected is one way to précis his life. As a neurologist he engaged with his patients on an intense and personal level. He also pushed the boundaries of his field by examining the relationship between the brain, per se, and the mind. The area of brain perception was explored in his first best-seller Awakenings (1973). Like Freud, Sacks not only delved into his particular discipline but excelled in writing the case studies of his patients. And by doing so he reached and educated a broader, secular audience, made even more numerous when Awakenings was made into a film in 1990 starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro. He wrote 11 books which also included Musicophilia and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Originally from England, he was a professor of neurology at the New Your University School of Medicine and a consistent contributor to science journals and literary journals. The hallmark of his autobiography, written when he was 81, is one of persistent, compulsive curiosity. During his life this curiosity extended mostly to matters of science

and philosophy and the mysteries of the brain. But in his autobiography he also turns his curiosity in on himself, revealing his struggles with his homosexuality. Any illusions people may have of him as an avuncular, pseudo saint are disabused when he reveals himself as a young man obsessed with drug taking, body building, motor bikes and a death wish – all the while in residence in California, Los Angeles and New York. He then abruptly became celibate and poured his libido and his ego into medicine and writing. It was only in the last seven years of his life that he found love with New York Times contributor Bill Hayes. On discovering that he had terminal cancer, his way of dealing with his mortality was to keep writing, a craft which he adored all his life. In the last piece he wrote for the New York Times he said: “I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and travelled and thought and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers.”

NE of the intriguing aspects of this versatile business, Custom Shade Solutions, is personalised, metal artwork. The artwork can be functional such as the popular, rusted-metal fire-pit; or alternatively the artwork can be decorative, providing life and fun to your outdoor experience. The material used is steel which can be treated to retain its original tone or it can be designed to give a lovely, rich, rusted colour. The dimensions are also variable and can go up to one and half metres by three metres in size. Other examples of the metal artwork include screens which can hide a particular part of your garden or small missing parts which might be needed to connect existing constructions. Alternatively you might want a name or a sign that reflects your interests or business. When it comes to creating something

E can spend a lot of money furnishing our homes and businesses with curtains and blinds, so keeping them clean and well maintained makes economic sense. At Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning they hear plenty of stories about people attempting to clean their own window furnishings with disastrous results. So why not call Denfield’s Rod Hamilton and have your blinds and curtains cleaned and repaired in your home, office or at Denfield’s workshop at reasonable cost, rather than replacing them. “Recently we’ve been doing a lot of blind cleaning in businesses and houses along main roads,” Rod said. “It’s really quite amazing the amount of black residue building up on some of these blinds, due to what we believe to be exhaust fumes. “Don’t forget that this dust and any

mould spores will eventually filter through any cooling or heating ducts and may be detrimental to your health. “We can professionally clean your blinds which is much more thorough than a regular dusting, which just recycles the dust to be cleaned from another surface later on.” Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning also offer an added specialised cleaning service of upholstery, including leather, mattresses and all those hard to reach ceiling fans, lights, air-conditioning and heating vents. All cleaning products are allergy and chemical-free, while all dust and contaminants are contained and disposed of so not to further contaminate cleaned surfaces. Phone Rod on 0439 132 021 for an obligation free on-site quote or email denfieldblinds@gmail.com.

True tales from the air crew

Picking up the right skills T

HE Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders were really a diverse and talented group of men determined to make a difference to 19th century society through their charitable efforts. One of the Serenaders was a man who came to Bendigo when still quite young at the time of the mining company boom in 1872. John Pickup went on to stay in the city that had been kind to him for a period of 33 years. Eventually Pickup left to try his luck in 1905 at Perth, Western Australia. One of the skills that Mr Pickup was able to bring to the Ethiopian Serenaders was playing the bones. Today we are rarely aware of beef rib bones being used as a form of accompaniment to music. The two bones striking together are able to provide a percussion sound. The bones are held between the index and ring fingers, their manipulation gives off a strong clacking sound and rhythm. It is not clear if Mr Pickup used two sets of bones, one pair in each hand, however he was regarded as a great exponent of the art of the bones. At the performances of the Ethiopian Serenaders he often blackened his face to add authenticity to the atmosphere being created. Other members of the Serenaders similarly blackened their faces for certain performance items. Another of the techniques that was practiced which was well known to African Americans of that period was “shucking”. Shucking was essentially racism in reverse, it was a means of deceiving “the master” by showing compliance to demands and instructions while that person was nearby. But as soon as their back was turned the African Americans could do the

J Pickup and J Roach in a shucking sketch opposite or nothing at all. Shucking was common during the slavery period and beyond. Just how shucking was utilised in the Serenaders’ creative program is unclear, however it did rate a mention at various times. Mr Pickup and his family lived in a house called Glenara, it was located in Brougham Street, in fashionable Quarry Hill. In earlier years the family had lived in Calvin Street, while his business address was Mitchell Street. Mr Pickup described himself as an agent – he was a representative for a number of insurance companies and an active real estate agent as well. At one particular sale of a string of properties, part of a deceased estate, Mr Pickup purchased over two thirds of the homes and land on offer at auction, 13 all told. Some of these properties were

acquired on a commission basis on behalf of clients keen to secure a particular home from that sale. His 38 Mitchell Street business address was also the base for a number of secretarial posts which he had to his name. He was secretary for the Bendigo and Eaglehawk District Traders’ Commerce and Industries Association, an important role. This association had more than 90 members. Mr Pickup was called upon to be the association’s spokesperson when there were wage demands by employees, or when half of full holidays for certain occasions was being requested and negotiated. He was also the assistant secretary to the Bendigo Liedertafel, another influential musical group. His secretarial administrative skills were also to the fore in the field of politics, he worked on a number of occasions for the re-election of Joseph Sternberg MLC. Mr Sternberg was the member for Northern Province and later much of the area was renamed the Bendigo Province. An entirely different string to Mr Pickup’s bow was being the legal manager for some local gold mining companies. A keen pigeon fancier, he had a coup in his back garden and showed as well as raced his different variety of birds. Early in 1904 when the Mr Pickup and his wife went out one evening, their home was burgled and 50 gold sovereigns taken from what they thought was a secret hiding place. In his time with the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders Mr Pickup helped to raise more than £2000 for deserving charitable cases.

Heroes of the Skies Michael Veitch Penguin Books Australia

I

F ever there was a “boys’ own adventure” story for men of all ages, Heroes of the Skies by comedian, newspaper columnist ,TV host and aircraft enthusiast Michael Veitch is it. Veitch’s compilation is the result of detailed and intimate interviews with 20 previously unheralded airmen – gunners, wireless operators, navigators and pilots – who served with Australian, British and/or US forces during World War II. This collection of potted biographies – distinct from Michael Ashcroft’s British book of the same name – draws together the highly personal reminiscences of veterans who are flattered yet bemused by the Australian public’s interest in their exploits 70 years after the fact. Many reveal they did not speak of their front-line experiences upon arriving home; for some, their face-to-face discussions with Veitch are their first ever frank and open retellings of events that occurred in Britain, Europe, the Middle East or Asia as the Allies fought a ferocious air war on two fronts simultaneously. The achievements of Veitch’s “heroes” are astounding: completing 49 bombing runs over European cities

when the odds of surviving even a dozen were daunting; hiking without water out of the German-held desert after being shot down in Egypt; landing on an aircraft carrier with a full complement of bombs still in place; being fired on by Japanese snipers concealed in the tops of coconut palms. Geographically the book spans operations across continental Europe, the Mediterranean rim and the Indian-Pacific region from the Andaman Islands and Sri Lanka to eastern New Guinea (with a particularly spinetingling account of the battle for Milne Bay). Veitch also includes little-known anecdotes on the development of Australia’s first homegrown fighter plane, the Boomerang, and the mutiny of sorts in which Australian trainees refused to fly locallybuilt Beaufort bombers until a deadly fault was rectified. Heroes of the Skies is the ideal gift for any father or grandfather who likes to read.

Mitiamo up for a fight By JOEL PETERSON

AFTER progressing all the way from an elimination final, Mitiamo coach Denis Grinton believes his side is not simply making up the numbers when it tackles a rampant Bridgewater in the Loddon Valley Football League grand final at Newbridge on Saturday. Mitiamo has played some brilliant football in its run through the finals, belting Calivil United in the first week of finals before recording a narrow win over Pyramid Hill in the first semi final. Last weekend the Super Roos used a nine-goal second quarter to record a 54-point win over Bears Lagoon-Serpentine and progress to the decider. In 2009 it was Mitiamo who broke Calivil’s streak of six consecutive flags, and they will look to stop the Mean Machine from reaching the same milestone this weekend. The Roos have plenty of star power in skipper Luke Lougoon, ruckman Michael I’Anson, forwards Korey Fulton and Steven Tolongs and onballers Doug Thomas and Terry Reeves but a

workmanlike back six has been the key to their success. “Our back half has been tremendous. They pride themselves on shutting their direct opponents down, but it’s a tough ask this week with the amount of avenues to goal they have,” Grinton said. “We would have to be in our absolute best form to match it with Bridgey, but hopefully we can get in there and give it a good shake. “We aren’t just there to make up the numbers, if you’re in the grand final you’re still a live chance. We are not doubting that for a second.” Bridgewater will be led by Harding medallist Andy Collins and his former Richmond teammate Dan Connors, full forward Brad Rohde and crafty crumber Alex Galea and key defender Darren Clutton to name a few as well as grand final experience all over the ground. Grinton said that win, lose or draw, he is proud to be able to return the club to the league’s biggest stage only three years removed from a second consecutive eighth-placed finish.

LEADING FROM THE FRONT: Mitiamo captain Luke Lougoon. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN “There are nine guys that played in the first senior game I coached three years ago and I think we got beaten by 38 goals in that first game,” he said. “The feeling around the place is outstanding, when you come from an elimination final and make a grand final, it is a bit of a fairy tale for the

Tigers roar into finals THE Kyneton Tigers will run out on the Queen Elizabeth Oval in a senior final for the first time in 12 years on Sunday, and Tigers coach Luke Beattie says his side can’t wait for the challenge. The Tigers will tackle Eaglehawk in an elimination final from 2.20pm on Sunday, with Golden Square to do battle with Sandhurst in Saturday night’s qualifying final from 6pm. Kyneton’s resurgence has been the feel-good story of the past two Bendigo Football Netball League seasons, after the club was in recess two years ago. “From a club perspective we are quite fortunate we have three of the junior teams in as well that are playing to what I think would be the first junior flag in the club’s history,” he said. “To have the senior side in after two years in the wilderness and the uncertainty that surrounded that whole situation is fantastic and shows how much work has gone in by a lot of people to get the club to this stage.” The Tigers won eight games in

the home and away season to finish fifth but, like Eaglehawk, did not defeat a team that finished above them on the ladder. Already facing uncertainty over the status of gun centre half forward Sean Williams, the Borough lost Ron Best medallist Matt Gretgrix for the season to a knee injury last week and could also be without the dynamic Jarrod Findlay. “(Gretgrix) has been an outstanding bloke and a fantastic footballer, and as someone who has done a knee in a finals series my commiserations are certainly with him,” Beattie said. While making the finals is one thing, Beattie is determined his Tigers won’t just be a flash in the finals pan. “It’s about the mentality of the playing group that brings about the success, and not one person has said ‘oh gee, we are just happy to be here’ but the group is looking at the opportunity to go further,” Beattie said. “I think in our planning and structure wise, we are confident in the group we are putting out there now, at the right part of the season,

club and the people that put so much work in. “Obviously I’m rapt for the boys to have the opportunity but for the people that are tireless with their work around the club, it makes me really proud that they can go and watch their team on grand final day.” Marong meets Bridgewater in the

reserves from 12.30pm, and Marong will also feature in the under-18s against Calivil United from 10.30am. Six netball matches will be played on the day, with Pyramid Hill tackling Calivil United in A-grade from 3pm. Saturday’s senior game gets under way at 2.30pm at Riverside Park, Newbridge. Entry on the day is $15.

Academy for girls

TIGERLAND: The big day looms. and its ability to take the club well into September with any luck.” Sandhurst will also be in action on the QEO netball courts when the Dragons meet Strathfieldsaye on Saturday night in A-grade netball, while Sunday’s elimination final sees Gisborne up against Kangaroo Flat. • More at bendigoweekly.com.au

YOUTH girls football in Bendigo was given a massive boost this week with the announcement the Bendigo Pioneers will unveil a youth girls academy in the 2016 season. Bendigo, along with Gippsland, will join the system to become the seventh and eighth academies within AFL Victoria for youth girls. Bendigo Pioneers will join Calder Cannons, Geelong/Western/ Werribee/Williamstown, Dandenong Stingrays, Murray Bushrangers, North Ballarat Rebels, Sandringham Dragons as clubs with academies. The academies will pilot a new structure and will be managed by the regions’ talent managers instead of AFL Victoria’s head office as they have previously. The Youth Girls Academies aim to prepare Victoria’s most promising Youth Girls for representative and senior football, with the likes of the Bendigo Thunder set to be huge winners from the program. Girls in each of the new regions will benefit from a similar program

that is delivered to the boys in the under-18 TAC Cup system, as the new academies utilise the same resources such as facilities and coaches. The development of the two new academies will assist in aligning a number of players closer to home, opening the program to new talent in each of the regions. Bendigo Pioneers talent manager Steve Sharp said it is a great opportunity to provide the same resources for talented boys and girls in the region. “We are really excited about it, and are looking forward to blending the youth girls academy into our current program,” Sharp told AFL Victoria’s website. “The girls will be able to experience the same program provided to the boys as be bring together both programs under the one umbrella.” Trials will begin soon for the new Bendigo and Gippsland academies, with a squad of 34 to be selected for each, along with the addition of a rookie squad of 10.

Braves confident By JOEL PETERSON

FOUR minutes. That was all that separated Mount Gambier and the Bendigo Braves last time they met. A four-minute stretch at the end of the SEABL south conference semi final two weeks ago in which the Pioneers reeled off a 14-0 run and took complete control of a game that was in the balance up until that point. A four-minute stretch in which the Braves did not respond and allowed their opponents to hit two threes and two monstrous dunks despite starting off the game exactly as planned. A four-minute stretch that the Braves replicated last week, to give themselves a chance at making amends against the Pioneers. As the Braves prepare to make the trek west once more to Bern Bruning Stadium, redemp-

tion is the main factor weighing on coach Ben Harvey’s mind. “Last week wasn’t easy, there were some real highs and lows during that and we took the opportunity down the stretch at the weekend which is what Mount Gambier did to us,” he said. “We are just so prepared for Mount Gambier now, and it is all those little things that have added up. “It is all about the game plan, we have talked about it, we know how to implement it, and I definitely think we can win.” The only negative for the Braves is the loss of youngster Jordan Mangan to a season-ending injury. Although Bendigo has lost all three of its contests against Mount Gambier this season all three have been close. The first time they met Bendigo was beaten by a point, trailed by

single digits into the last quarter of the second match and was in control for large parts of the most recent clash before letting victory slip away late. “We can’t be any better prepared, and probably hungry too,” Harvey said. “They have got us three times during the season and once in preseason, so this is the fifth time that we come up against them. “I’d say we understand their game and they probably understand ours, but I think we have better depth and we can use that to our advantage.” The likes of Brad Hill, Tyrone Lee, Damian Johnson and Erik Burdon will all cause Harvey plenty of headaches, but he believes the Braves match up will against the Pioneers’ guns. Harvey is determined not to let his side fall short of reaching the

national final, and is confident that they have enough fire power to play off for the ultimate prize that has so far eluded him in six years of coaching the team. “They are a great team and have been super strong all year and we have plenty of respect for them,” he said. “But I think defensively we match up well against them and that we can hurt them offensively with our inside presence. “We need to use that as our strength but they are the best team in the competition in both conferences, and we are out there to create an upset because we are definitely not the favourites. “Not many teams expect us to win. Except ourselves. We are very confident, and I think we can get it done.” The Braves take on Mount Gambier from 8pm on Friday.

Bendigo teams chase elusive win THE championship aspirations of the Bendigo Braves and Lady Braves go on the line this weekend in the South East Australian Basketball League south conference grand finals. In recent years both sides have been perilously close to the ultimate success, but have not been able to make the leap. This year, after roster uncertainty all season, Bendigo will go into the game without Stephanie Bairstow and Stacia Robertson after the duo suffered season ending injuries. “It’s tough, but this group has been really resilient and I’m really proud of where we have got to,” coach Jonathan Goodman said. “We still have our sights on getting to a national

grand final and there is a lot of belief in the group that we can do that.” Kilsyth defeated Launceston last week to advance to the grand final, played at Bendigo Stadum on Saturday night. The Lady Cobras are led by WNBL sharpshooter Stephanie Cumming and Cassie Sant, who faces a big battle against Bendigo’s star centre Elyse Penaluna. When Kilsyth played in Bendigo earlier in the season they belted the Lady Braves by over 30 points, a fact not lost on Goodman. Tessa Lavey and Kelly Wilson starred the last time the two sides met, and loom as the big threat for the Lady Braves once more. “I think the advantage is our versatility. Our group has been in and out

CLOSE: The Lady Braves need to make the leap. throughout the year and everyone has been able to step up and play a role,” he said. “I think that’s what has been so great about this group, is that everyone does play a role and everyone steps up to the occasion regardless of whether they have been in the rotation. “It will be interesting

again with our rotation at the weekend because we will have to play our best hand with the cards we are dealt, but we have done a good job of that so far this season.” Tip-off in Saturday’s south conference grand final is at 7.30pm at Bendigo Stadium.

BENDIGO will be part of a netball first early next year when Flora Hill Stadium hosts the north central division of the newly-formed Regional Victorian Netball League. The RVNL will be closely aligned with the Victorian Netball League and allow players an opportunity to showcase their skills in order to play at a higher level without having to travel to Melbourne. Bendigo, along with Ballarat, Churchill, Wangaratta, Sale and Warrnambool will all host the sixweek series in February and March next year. All asssociations and aligned clubs can enter teams in the Open, 19-andunder and 15-and-under competitions. “The Regional Victorian Netball League will join the Victorian Netball League as

one of Victoria’s elite netball competitions,” Netball Victoria competitions manager Angela Banbury said. “We certainly recognise that our regional centres produce some of the best players in Victoria, with seven of our 12 Melbourne Vixens athletes hailing from the country, the pathway we have for these players is therefore crucial in their development as elite athletes.” In addition to benefiting regional netballers with talent identification opportunities for athletes, the RVNL will provide development opportunities for umpires and mentoring for coaches, as well as technical officials. The winners of each location of RVNL in open and 19-and-under divisions will compete against each other in a champions challenge in Melbourne.
