pool call Council seeks backing

By LAURA HURLEY

THE City of Greater Bendigo has called for expressions of interest from management organisations to partner with council in the delivery and management of the Greater Bendigo Indoor Aquatic Leisure and Wellbeing Centre. The call follows a meeting between councillors and the Kangaroo Flat Community Leisure Centre committee on Wednesday to discuss the committee’s proposed alternative plans for the centre, which include retaining the original leisure centre (which is to be demolished in plans adopted by council). The committee will now wait for a written response from council following the meeting, and council staff say the call for expression of interest is not confirmation council had disregarded the alternative plans. City of Greater Bendigo active and healthy communities manager Patrick Jess said the expression of interest was an opportunity for organisation to partner with council, and said it was unrelated to the meeting between councillors and the leisure centre committee. “It’s not related and quite separate,” Mr Jess said. “The EOI will help the city identify those organisations that are best

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Home loans below peak AUSTRALIAN Bureau of Statistics housing finance figures released this week show that while lending to investors buying new homes reached an all-time high in July, lending to owner occupiers remained below the peak that occurred nearly a year ago. The Housing Industry Association says the total number of loans to owner occupiers purchasing or constructing new homes remained largely unchanged in July 2015 compared with the level in June, but was 9.4 per cent lower than the peak level of lending that occurred in September of last year. In contrast, lending to investors constructing new homes increased strongly in July. The value of lending in this category jumped by 11.7 per cent in the month alone to reach a new all-time high. HIA economist Diwa Hopkins said investors have played a major role in the current new home building cycle, contributing a larger share of new housing supply than has historically been the case. “We maintain our concern about recent APRA interventions – there is a risk of disruption to new home building activity,” he

said. “New home building has been a key element to the broader domestic economy’s continual growth in recent years, but critically, it has also made meaningful headway in satisfying the housing needs of Australia’s growing population.” THE arrival of spring has triggered a frenzy of activity in the local housing market, with several auctions scheduled for this weekend. Kicking off today at 2pm today, Friday, September 11 on site, agents DCK Real Estate and Tweed Sutherland First National have an extremely rare offering of five commercial freeholds in Bendigo’s tightly held Hargreaves Mall to be offered individually. Located at 280, 282, 284, 286 and 288 Hargreaves Mall. A rare opportunity to buy a slice of heaven – or the next best thing, exists via Saturday’s auction of the former Uniting Church and adjoining manse at 19 Panton Street and 2A Laurel Street, Golden Square. Listed with Tweed Sutherland First National, the circa 1872 solid brick church build-

The property does need restoration, but offers enormous potential. The properties will be offered firstly as a whole, and then if necessary, in two lots. Auction starts at 11.30am Saturday. TSFN also has a stunning Californian bungalow at 121 Hargreaves Street up for auction from 1pm Saturday. The three bedroom inner city home has enormous street appeal, a host of period features, pool, rear

paved entertaining area and a large rumpus room. The company also has a three bedroom plus study cream brick home set on half an acre at 110 Lockwood Road, Kangaroo Flat set for auction from 11am Saturday. Elders Bendigo has a low-cost 16 acre allotment at 309 Sugarloaf Road Axedale to auction on site from 10am Saturday. Located only 20 minutes or so from the Bendigo CBD, the property is zoned Rural Conservation, with power and telephone at the boundary. Bidding is expected to commence at around $100,000.

Inquest held for Patiya The large gum tree that fell on the mother and daughter was one of about 600 trees in the park inspected by a City of Greater Bendigo arborist three months earlier, as part of a strategic plan to identify defects in trees. Announcing his findings, Mr Byrne said the lack of a formal tree management plan had not been a factor in the child’s death, but that an overhead inspection of the tree would have shown the decay that existed in the tree. The inquest had previously heard that it cost about $200 per tree to per-

form a traditional above ground inspection involving ropes and harnesses, but that the advent of new technologies would make such inspections a lot cheaper.

A VICTORIAN coroner has recommended all councils develop a computer-based inventory and maintenance program of trees that they are responsible for as part of his finding into the death of a four-year-old Bendigo girl killed by a falling tree limb late in 2013. Coroner Phillip Byrne released his finding into the death of Patiya May Schreiber, who died in Rosalind Park on December 30, 2013. use of drones and good resolution cameras could allow for rapid and low cost above ground tree inspections, and that the possible impacts of climate change on canopy events should be considered by all councils. He said old trees were likely to experience greater forces from winds and storm events and from different directions. The City of Greater Bendigo was unable to respond to a request for comment prior to deadline.

The state government will provide $1.1 million over the next four years to raise awareness about men’s health and prostate cancer, and to support research into the disease. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among Victorian men. In 2013, there were 4257 new cases of prostate cancer in Victoria, making up 27 per cent of all new male cancers diagnosed. Sadly, 729 men died from the disease last year. The new funding was announced at the EJ Whitten 20th Commemorative Dinner by premier Daniel Andrews and health minister Jill Hennessy. Named in honour of Victorian football legend Ted Whitten, who passed away 20 years ago from prostate cancer, the EJ Whitten Foundation raises awareness of prostate cancer and promotes regular testing and early detection. The foundation will be provided with $500,000 to develop and roll out a new men’s health initiative called “Inspiring men, saving lives”, which will include community education sessions and encourage men to take ownership of their individual health and wellbeing and have regular health checks. Prostate cancer has the third highest survival rate of all cancers, with 93 per cent of Victorian men surviving five years after a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

And we didn’t have any councillors or staff say it won’t work. “I know we still do have to change the minds of individual councillors or how they had voted previously.”

The committee expects to receive a written response from council in the coming two weeks, as well as a report to be prepared and put forward to all councillors at a council meeting. “We’re not about stopping the aquatics centre, but we’re certainly about saving the leisure centre,” Mr McKinnon said.

Funds for special needs

STATE Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards is urging local schools to apply for funding to build more inclusive facilities for special needs students. A new $10 million Inclusive Schools fund was announced by the state government on Tuesday, and Ms Edwards said it was an opportunity for local schools to improve facilities for students with disabilities. “There’s a $10m fund for schools to put in for a submission for a grant to improve facilities within their schools for kids who have special needs,” Ms Edwards said.

“It’s great news for kids with special needs all across Victoria because there are lot of schools that just don’t have the facilities to support the kids that have integrated into the mainstream schools.” Making the announcement at the Kalianna School, Ms Edwards said she expected mainstream schools in Bendigo would have an increased need for specialist facilities in the future. ”We know that there’s an increase in the number of children being diagnosed with autism,” she said. “So schools need to think ahead about how they are going to accom-

modate those children who may arrive at their school. “So, for example if a mainstream school doesn’t have a quiet space or a satisfactory learning space for kids who might have autism,

their best.” Ms Edwards said with an increase in the number of students with special needs studying in Bendigo, she believed the fund would be important to fulfilling future education needs. “This is an important program thinking about the future needs of those kids and also to support the kids who are currently enrolled,” she said. The Bendigo Weekly has been joined by the Prime Television Network as Sports Star’s major media partners, with both organisations keen to contribute to the event, which proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year. “It’s important we thank those organisations who have supported Sports Star over the past 50 years, and to declare our intention to continue to provide a platform to celebrate the region’s sporting achievements in an appropriate way,” Prime regional manager Chris Tuohey said. Sports Star committee chairperson Wendy James welcomed the Weekly to the Sports Star team, and said she looked forward to many more positive announcements about the event in the months ahead. Ms James also thanked sponsors including Bendigo Health and Sports Focus for their ongoing support of Sports Star, and said a limited number of sponsorship opportunities were still available for local businesses who shared the passion and commitment to acknowledging and celebrating the region’s sporting achievements. Mayor holds firm on mosque

BENDIGO mayor Peter Cox has dismissed a local ballot opposing the development of a mosque in East Bendigo, saying it will achieve nothing as the decision to approve the mosque has already been made. He said the decision to approve the mosque came down to whether the city would continue to uphold residents rights to freely practice their religion. “Greater Bendigo is proudly a multi-faith community,” Cr Cox said. “The question is not whether

a mosque is built in Bendigo, but whether we will continue to uphold the Constitutional rights of residents and visitors to freely practice their chosen faith.” Last month VCAT ruled in favour of the mosque after an appeal was lodged to reverse council’s decision, however a further appeal has been made to the Supreme Court. Cr Cox said council had received a number of letters and emails recently calling for a public vote on the issue. “The results of a ballot will not change anything as the decision has already been made,” he said.

“The use and development of the land in question for a mosque required a planning permit. VCAT ruled in favour of the proposal and ordered that a permit be granted.

Both state members for Bendigo spoke out in Parliament last week against anti-mosque rallies that disrupted Bendigo’s CBD two weeks ago.

The results of a ballot will not change anything as the decision has already been made

“There is no legal mechanism for such a decision to be overturned as a result of a local ballot at this stage in the process.” He said such matter should not come down to a popular vote.

By LAURA HURLEY

Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said those who travelled from outside Bendigo to attend the rallies should “stay home and stay away”. “The people who travelled to Bendigo last Sunday to preach the

message of hate and intolerance do not represent me or the overwhelming number of people in the community,” Ms Allan said. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the majority of those who attended the rallies were not locals. “They have preyed on other people’s fear of difference and have chosen to create division and hatred in our community, mostly through misinformation,” she said. Another anti-mosque rally has been planned in Bendigo on October 10. OPINION Page 16

Two teachers volunteered their skills and others gave their time.

Ten youngsters were given the opportunity to make a skateboard from scratch, glueing veneer, vacuum packing, sanding, sealing, designing art work, attaching grip tape and then buying their own trucks and wheels to make it a finished product. The equipment was bought from a grant through the City of Greater Bendigo’s Yo Bendigo program in 2014.

Eaglehawk Community House coordinator Fiona Mummery said the eight-week workshop has provided youth with something to do after school. “It’s something interesting and fun. Information plus for train users By JOEL PETERSON

V/LINE customers will have access to real-time train information as of next Tuesday, as part of a state government upgrade to passenger information displays (PIDs). The upgrade will see displays installed showing approximate departure and arrival times of trains. Bendigo will be the last station on the line to receive the upgrade, as the rollout will be made progressively from Clarkefield back to Bendigo. Bendigo station will have the system installed on September 29, with Kangaroo Flat receiving it the day before. Minister for public transport Jacinta Allan said the upgrade would provide numerous benefits to commuters. “This means people will be

able to know exactly where the train is on the network so if a train is running a few minutes behind time the exact time of its arrival will be available to those passengers,” she said.

People will be able to know... where the train is “This is all about providing more information to passengers so people can plan their movements. “It will be very similar to what is seen on the Metro system in Melbourne and will also

be presented in a verbal form so those people with special needs can access it as well.” The displays at all stations will be operational by mid-October. The technology will be rolled out across the V/Line network, also being installed at 33 stations on the Ballarat and Geelong lines. Ms Allan said the changes would provide additional benefits for disabled passengers, who are frequent users of public transport across the network. “I think it is important to recognise that people with special needs and people with a disability rely a lot on public transport to get around,” she said. “Improvements to technology means we can get the information to them to allow them to better plan their journey and make it as easy for them as possible.”

Stepping out to battle Alzheimer’s NOW is the time to plan ahead for an inaugural event in Bendigo, and all you have to do is walk or run. Alzheimer’s Australia is holding its first Bendigo Memory Walk and Jog on Sunday, October 11 at Strathdale Park. The association is aiming to get 1000 people signed up for the first year in Bendigo and they will then actively fundraise in Victoria. Annie Kelly has registered her family. Her father Darcy was diagnosed with vascular dementia and alzheimer’s in 2007. He died in 2009. “He was a friendly, loving gentle giant with an Irish

wit and an amazing insight into people and the world,” Mrs Kelly said. “He lived 80 fantastic years until a stroke in 2008, caused by the dementia. “This robbed of his memory and made him reliant on 24/7 round the clock care. Dad left behind a legacy that will live on for generations to come.” People can walk or jog and kids and pram strollers are encouraged too – it’s all about getting out and honouring someone you love who has or had dementia. The Bendigo Weekly is on board too, so watch editions up to the event to find out more, or if you can’t wait got

THE new Bendigo bus network has yet again been delayed and will now will not be rolled out until next year. Minister for public transport Jacinta Allan said this week that the new network is not likely to hit the roads until revised train timetables are implemented in early 2016. The original network plan was released last November but was met with widespread negative feedback from the community and forced Public Transport Victoria to seek further community consultation. A second network plan was released in April and community consultation sessions held before a final announcement. PTV’s website says the final details will be communicated

“soon”, but Ms Allan said this week the network will not be upgraded until next year. “The bus timetables will be released in conjunction with some further changes to regional train timetables at the end of the year for commencements in January 2016,” she said. “This is happening at a state wide level... the work that has been done to improve the Bendigo bus timetable will be released in the coming months to commence from January 2016.” The new bus network is expected to feature more direct routes and better connections with major transport hubs around the city. Glanville page 18

The festival of joy Bendigo students had the opportunity of performing at the Festival of the Sacred this week. More than 700 Catholic primary school students performed at the spectacular event which takes place every two years, assembling one of the largest choirs that has performed in the region. The event is a celebration of performing arts and brings together stu-

dents from the Goldfields and North Western region, who sing and dance as a whole group. Catholic Education Sandhurst director Paul Desmond said it was great to see the students perform. “What a joy it is to see young people performing and sharing their God given talents,” he said. The Festival was hosted at St Francis of the Fields

Catholic Primary School, in Strathfieldsaye. The event highlights an important partnership between Catholic Education Sandhurst and the Australian School of Performing Arts, who deliver performing arts experiencesfor young people throughout the country. “The festival combines the talents of the Australian performing arts along with our own teachers

who are committed to enhancing the quality of performing arts,” Mr Desmond said. Australian Girls Choir manager Kylie Lee-Archer, said the event was now a part of the Sandhurst Diocese culture. “It’s wonderful to see music and singing becoming such an important part of the educational experience for these students,” she said.

Garden display for a cause Eaglehawk residents Ken and Muriel Maes are opening up their garden not to show off their plants, but to raise awareness and funds for leprosy treatment in Nepal. “It’s a terrible affliction”, Mr Maes said. “Once you know you have it, it’s usually too late.” The garden of their house Widecombe Cottage contains a diverse collection of plants, which are described by Mr Maes as “a perfect marriage of both natives and succulents”. The house is surrounded by seven distinct ar-

THE City of Greater Bendigo wants interested residents and business owners to attend a series of community meetings to learn more about the potential benefits of being involved in the 2015 RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride. The event will take place from November 28 to December 6, and will travel 540 kilometres through Victoria’s historic goldfields towns including Ballarat, Avoca, Dunolly, Inglewood, Bendigo, Heathcote and Castlemaine. About 4000 keen cyclists are expected to take part in the event. Tourism manager Kathryn Mackenzie, said with just more than two months until the event takes place, there was still time for businesses and residents to get involved. “This event cements Greater Bendigo’s reputation as a cycling destination. There will be a rest day in Bendigo, so this presents an excellent opportunity for businesses to promote all our region has to offer and benefit from thousands of people stopping on our doorstep,” Ms Mackenzie said. “Participants will then head

Shape up with colour STUDENTS have organised a crazy colour day and fun run to raise money for a worthy cause. The group of students, from the Athlete Development Program at Bendigo South East College, has arranged the run for next Wednesday. The school community as well as grade sixes from across Bendigo will attend to raise money for cancer research. Athlete Development Program manager Adam Fleming said the students thought up, planned, recruited, promoted and organised the colour run. “I estimate they will register more than 1000 runners which is an amazing effort,” Mr Fleming said.

Smart way to enjoy sun EAGLEHAWK Secondary College students are set for a safer summer thanks to an eftpos and Cancer Council Shade for Secondary Schools grant. In 2013, for the first time, Cancer Council Australia gave secondary schools the opportunity to apply for a shade grant worth up to $25,000. The response was overwhelming with one in eight secondary schools across Australia applying for the grant, which was funded by a $1 million donation from eftpos. Eaglehawk principal Noel Claridge said the school was proud to be recognised for its SunSmart commitment. “Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers,” Mr Claridge said. “As a school, we want to do what we can to protect our students and play our part to reduce their lifetime risk of developing the disease. Providing a shade-friendly outdoor environment will help us achieve that goal, as we know students require little encouragement to seek shade when it’s provided.

SUN WISE: Jane Hill from SUNSMART, Mikayla Knight, Noel Claridge, Kaidyn Barton and Peter Cox. “We now have a fantastic shade structure in our canteen and student recreational areas that provides sun protection during lunchtimes, breaks and during breakfast club activities.” SunSmart’s Jane Hill said the new shade will help students to be well-protected from the sun.

“Melanoma is the most common cancer in Australians aged 12-24 years, with more than double the number of cases than any other kind of cancer,” Ms Hill said. You can find the sun protection times by downloading the free SunSmart app, checking the weather section of the newspaper or by visiting sunsmart.com.au.

He said the event encouraged exercise and participation as a way to raise money for a good cause. One of the organisers, year eight student Bridie Blake-Burrows, said she wanted the event to show you can have fun while exercising as well as raising awareness and money for cancer research. “I love running and I thought it was a good way to show my passion to the school through something so fun and happy,” she said. Coloured powder will be thrown at runners throughout the course, and a barbecue will be provided. For those wishing to go along, it will be held at the BSE top oval at 1.45pm onwards.

healthy option: The push is own for an early start.

Scoot along now LOCAL children are being encouraged to walk, scoot or ride to and from school as part of the Active Travel, Healthy Kids Guide. Launched this week by City of Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox, the guide is a joint initiative of council’s Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy and Healthy Together Bendigo. The guide has been personalised for each primary school in Bendigo, and includes a map of the surrounding neighbourhood. Cr Cox said nearly 80 per cent of primary school students in the Greater Bendigo area who live within two kilometres of their school are driven every day. “Active travel is a great way to improve your general fitness and if children can develop healthy habits now, then it will help them to be

active adults in the future,” he said. “Safety is also a top priority. Children who learn the road rules now, especially when riding a bike or sharing a bike path with other cyclists or pedestrians, should develop the confidence they need to continue to feel safe and hopefully keep riding into adulthood.” October is Walk to School Month, and Cr Cox said it was a good opportunity for both parents and students to get active. “I strongly encourage parents and children to use Walk to School Month to start changing their behaviours and use the guide, which is a terrific resource, to plan how they can not only walk, scoot or ride to school but also to other destinations like parks and local shops near where they live,” he said.

New home for Radius By LAURA HURLEY

THE Morley Johnson Building will soon become the heart of Radius Disability Services, with a number of enterprises expected to have set up shop on the ground floor by the end of October. Billies and Birdies cafe and the Rags and Riches retail outlet will form part of Morley’s Emporium, a massive undertaking by Radius in developing local jobs and industry. Radius Disability Service’s Tanya Bytschkow said the public can expect big things from the move, with

all of Radius’ services in Bendigo to be centralised in the CBD. “Our retail and hospitality are moving in towards the end of October. So they don’t have very long to go at all,” she said. “On the ground floor on the left hand side will be our cafe Billies and Birdies. On the right hand side will be our retail outlet Rags and Riches. “Behind those guys will be our creative and our production teams. So our machinists, screen printers, sewing staff.” A range of clothes,

homewares and gifts will be stocked, with a number of the pieces designed and created by Radius employees, which will all happen inhouse after the move. “There’s a lot of high expectations in regards to their work. It’s a very professional environment, it’s socially inclusive so it’s for all, it’s accessible,” Ms Bytschkow said. “Clothes, giftwares, homewares – some of that stuff will also be made by our guys as well. “We’ve also got a lot of stock coming in from the US and the UK so we’ve got a lot of on-trend stuff has been

hand picked.” She said in addition to the move, the scale of behind the scenes work in preparation for the retail outlet and the cafe had been large. “We are starting businesses from scratch, literally from the ground up,” Ms Bytschkow said. “There’s a lot of governance that supports that movement. It’s quite a massive undertaking.” Ms Bytschkow said feedback about the emporium had been overwhelmingly positive, and Radius employees were excited about the upcoming move.

editorial

opinion

It’s up to us to make it right

Pollies speak out over mosque

A FORMER Victorian premier reportedly once said if he wanted to just be popular, he’d bring back capital punishment. A flippant remark no doubt, but there’s more than a grain of truth and substance to the line as well. Thankfully, popularity isn’t the overarching criteria implemented by any level of government to make decisions or issue guidelines and permits that affect everyone in the community.

People should always have a mutual respect The most important criteria, and indeed, the only criteria that should guide our elected represented, is to do what is right. Independent decision makers have ruled that the City of Greater Bendigo was right to approve the development of the city’s first mosque at East Bendigo. Quite simply, the project has

Bendigo Labor MPs Jacinta Allan and Maree Edwards this week spoke out in the Victorian Parliament against recent anti mosque protests held in Bendigo, highlighting diversity as a great strength for Bendigo, and their distress at the lack of tolerance displayed by a small minority of protesters. Edited versions of both speeches appear below.

been deemed to comply with the necessary planning requirements that are both relevant and integral to any similar proposal, meaning our councillors had little choice but to approve the application that came before them. Ensuring the proponent complies with any conditions imposed upon them as part of the process then becomes the responsibility of council officers, a process councillors will no doubt be equally keen to see unfold. The fact that any particular group might not like the idea, or might not support this project, can only be tested against this same criteria. Not by a concern, a worry, a fear of something or by what may or may not be happening elsewhere. In this country, and in many others, it’s unconstitutional to deny someone their right to practice their religion freely. It’s up to Bendigo to make this work. People have a right to object and to express the diversity of opinion that exists in any democracy. People should always have a mutual respect for one another, for our laws, and for the democracy we are all a part of. But none of us has the right to deny others their constitutional rights. That’s actually un-Australian.

BENDIGO is made up of people from many different backgrounds, cultures and religions, and it has been since the gold rush era. For generations the people of the city have lived harmoniously together, with the great mix of people sharing, learning and working together to make the city a great and welcoming place. Sadly a very small number of people have lost their tolerance of this great diversity. They have preyed on other people’s fear of difference and have chosen to create division and hatred in our community, mostly through misinformation. They have harnessed the hatred and intolerance of others who do not live in Bendigo and used them to promote their propaganda. I want to make an important point. There were not thousands of Bendigo residents at the rallies in Bendigo. There were a few hundred mostly non-residents who entered our city to create division and promote hatred. Sadly for our tourist opera-

represent me or the overwhelming number of people in the community. It distresses me greatly that Bendigo’s proud name is being stomped on by people who have no regard for respect, freedom of religion or tolerance – and I am alarmed that they are proposing another day out in Bendigo in a few weeks’ time. These people should stay home and stay away. Their protest has no place in Bendigo and will not change people’s views. We will continue to celebrate diversity. Most importantly, I thank the Bendigo community for staying away from these rallies and thereby continuing to reinforce the fact that they believe in respect and diversity, that we are a great city, and that people should continue to remember this when we talk about the wonderful city of Bendigo. tors and small businesses, the CBD was effectively shut down and trade was basically stopped. The next day Bendigo returned to its usual peaceful, harmonious and busy self, and those who came to promote hatred, racism and intolerance had left, achieving nothing. Maree Edwards, Bendigo West MP. Bendigo is a wonderful city with a rich tradition of welcoming people—indeed our city exists because of the migrants who flocked from around the world in the 1850s to call Bendigo home. The vision that has been broadcast around the country and around the world of the protest in our city has placed Bendigo in the spotlight in the most unpleasant way. The people who travelled to Bendigo to preach the message of hate and intolerance do not

What about the USA? Why isn’t the USA offering (or aisforced) to take a big proportion of these refugees, since it was responsible for creating this mess in the first place? Or is this a politically incorrect question to ask? C Sartori, Quarry Hill

Time for a change Comments in local media by Minister for local government Natalie Hutchins that there was significant will in the community to keep councillor behaviour in check across the state are revealing. There appears to be imminent legislative action to address poor councillor behaviour. While councillors need to be smartened up, this is something of a sideshow. The even more pressing priority must be making senior council officers more accountable to residents and ratepayers. I hope Minister Hutchins is just as diligent in seeking urgent reform in this area. Presently, the unelected, almost unaccountable senior council staff have undue power in how council functions and appear dismissive of ratepayers’ genuine interaction, role in decision making and input into setting priorities. While we need professional managers to oversee the complexities of a sophisticated council operation, we need mechanisms in place to ensure councillors have more than token influence with ratepayers better involved and their ideas on improving council performance carefully evaluated; not dismissed out of hand. Mayor Peter Cox recently lamented the fact councillors have no say in the number of staff council employs; this decision is made by the CEO, Craig Niemann, who is the only employee actually employed by the councillors sitting as the council. This type of anomaly, and many others, need to be addressed in the current review of the Local Government Act. I eagerly await the reform package to see if Ms Hutchins and her department are up to the task of real local government reform and giving ratepayers a greater say in how their money is spent. Michael McKenzie, Bendigo

Abide by the umpire In industrial matters unions often get criticised for not abiding by the umpire’s decision. In the latest industrial dispute in the Metro system the union went to the umpire (Fair Work Australia) and

received permission to take protected action after 98 per cent of its members voted for the right to take action, after the protracted dissembling by Metro on negotiations. So, why hasn’t our state transport minister entered the fray to bring the two parties together in an attempt to facilitate and resolve the issues? Instead the minister has taken sides with Metro and shown just where this government stands on issues involving unions, even if they have the umpire’s decision. Perhaps that is the reason; this government is attempting to show it owes nothing to the union movement and is only playing politics with the dispute. It appears the minister for transport has the same opinion as Senator Eric Abetz in blaming only the unions for industrial disputes. Bill Collier, Golden Square

Ill-informed intolerance The recent re-enactment commemorating the Red Ribbon Rebellion and the protest against the construction of a mosque in Bendigo are by remarkable coincidence intrinsically linked. The rebellion by the diggers on the goldfields in 1852 was concerned with the issues of basic human rights, freedom, parliamentary representation, equity in taxation and human dignity. One hundred and sixty-three years on both sides of the argument for and against the mosque also submit that they stand for human rights, particularly that of freedom of speech. The troubles on the goldfields culminated in the Eureka Stockade and as history records the diggers finally won the freedoms and rights they sought. In contrast the dispute over the mosque continues. However, whereas the diggers campaigned for universal human rights, those who argue against the construction of the mosque only present arguments which represent one particular group within society. Masquerading behind an objection to planning permission and the claim for freedom to expression lies the ugliness of xenophobia, racism, ignorance and bigotry. In asking what motivates the objectors there are, apparently, a plethora of reasons. Inevitably the underlying reason is that of anti-Muslim sentiment. In a modern, pluralistic and (supposedly) sophisticated society this displays a level of ill-informed intolerance which belongs in a different age. Australians have more to fear from family violence than from any

chimera of that posed by human beings who subscribe to the Islamic religion. Reflecting on the events on the goldfields Bendigonians may also learn a valuable insight into how to approach the current dispute with respect to the mosque. While the diggers sought rights for themselves, these were exclusively for those of British stock, the largest non-European minority on the goldfields, the Chinese, were excluded from any such claims. The Chinese were actively discouraged from entering Australia and travelling to the goldfields through the imposition of taxes. They were regarded with suspicion and physically attacked, many losing their lives through actions by angry mobs. Contemporary Australians reflect on these events and rightly perceive them to be driven by extreme ignorance, fear and xenophobia. How ironic that these same factors drive the anti-mosque protestors. It is a further irony that the very race which was loathed is now celebrated as a central part of Bendigo’s lore and is a core factor which drives our tourist trade. When the mosque is built and the protests cease those who reflect on the disgraceful protests against its construction will ponder the question with respect to why there were so many aggressive, harmful objections. Perhaps a future historian may draw the parallels between the afore-

Security Doors and Maintenance

mentioned events. Inevitably he or she may also reflect on the reality that neither the anti-Chinese sentiment nor anti-Muslim sentiment carried any weight, and that the presence of both communities in Bendigo contributed immensely to the cultural and economic life of our city. Cr Chapman and her fellow objectors should well remember the lessons of our history, for those who forget history are certain to repeat the mistakes of our past. Dr Kelvin F Curnow, Bendigo

Awareness of dementia For the month of September, Alzheimer’s Australia Vic is hosting Dementia Awareness Month. The theme this year is Creating a Dementia Friendly Nation. Alzheimer’s Australia has a vision to develop dementia-friendly communities and organisations across Victoria. A dementia-friendly community is one in which people living with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value. A place where people are aware of and understand dementia, and where people who have dementia feel included and involved. There are more than 342,800 Australians living with dementia including 81,000 Victorians and an estimated 1.2 million people are involved in the care of a person with

dementia in Australia. The reality associated with an ageing population means that taking the opportunity to discuss what it means to “age well” has never been more important. We all have a role to play in helping people with dementia to sustain their independence, dignity and sense of belonging in our communities. For further information and support phone 1800 100 500, 9am to 5pm nationally across Australia, Monday to Friday (excluding national public holidays). Keep the leisure centre Why can’t we keep the Kangaro Flat Community Leisure Centre and build the pool next to it? If the council decided to do this wouldn’t it show that our representatives are actually listening to us and are prepared to stand up for what we want? I would urge the council to not demolish a perfectly good building that would cost millions to build now. With a little sensible use of ratepayers’ money on upkeep and modernisation we would have a set of buildings to service our community for years to come. Edward Franklin, Kangaroo Flat AdvErtiSEMEnt

N old stager headlines the newest stage for Bendigo’s ever‐growing Blues and Roots Music Festival when Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows rock Ulumburra Theatre on Saturday, November 7. Australian rock royalty, the Sorrows will share the bill with Backsliders and Hat Fitz and Cara as the festival marks its fifth year with no fewer than 180 acts across four days and 40+ venues around Bendigo. Other highlights include a BB King tribute show in the Federation Room at the Shamrock Hotel on the Friday night of the festival. On the same night, the Capital Theatre will feature an all‐star lineup of Sal Kimber and The Rollin’ Wheel, Jeff Lang, Owen Campbell and Lucie Thorne with Hamish Stuart. The Lazenby Young Guitarist Award finals will be held on Saturday afternoon and there will be return gig by Australia’s premier blues guitarist Geoff Achison. Sunday’s day‐long family friendly concert features 16 acts on two stages in Rosalind Park. Festival founder Colin Thompson described the 2015 line‐up as “the best yet – but then I would say that, wouldn’t I?” “Seriously, though, the festival has now established itself as one of the country’s premier blues and roots events, so we’re seeing popular acts returning and big‐name acts like Joe Camilleri happy to come aboard,” he said. “There’s no doubt, too, the Ulumburra Theatre is a tremendous boon for Bendigo and the festival. We’re hoping to go very close to selling out the 1200 seats for the Saturday night gig.” Mr Thompson said Ulumburra is one of a number of ticketed events – along

with the Capital and BB King shows – and urged festival‐goers to get in early to book seats. “We will of course run many, many free shows, but the economics of attracting big names demands we ticket and sell those events.” Mr Thompson said more than 11,000 patrons attended the 2014 festival and organisers were confident of exceeding this. “The festival is growing and so is Bendigo’s ability to cater for people now travelling here and staying for multiple shows. There is plenty of good quality accommodation available and of course an exquisite range of licensed venues means there’s no shortage of dining and entertainment.” Mr Thompson paid tribute to the

festival’s major sponsors such as the Bendigo Weekly, City of Greater Bendigo, Telstra Business Centre, Bendigo Bank and Bendigo Regional Tourism and the venues that had thrown open their doors to enable the itinerary to expand year on year. “Bendigo has really gotten behind us and it’s a big win‐win because we’re able to attract plenty of business to reward those businesses that have come aboard.” Asked to pick out some favourite acts, Mr Thompson said, “All of them.” There is something for everyone, from the full‐on band sound of the energetic Jackson Firebird through the singer‐ songwriter style of Aaron Wales to the slight country twang of the Davidson Brothers.

Bernard’s burning issue

what’s on...

in association with KLFM radio 96.5FM

Despite 29 years of warning, one young man overdid the sun baking

Y

OU would think everybody would be across the slip, slop, slap message by now. Despite decades of warning Bernard in Bendigo rolled up to the workplace in a severely roasted hue. Of course these fairskinned types take a bit of a battering in the sunnier months, but Bernard managed it in winter. The tool. It’s not the sort of thing you can hide either. Red face. A message to all, Bernard was either terribly embarrassed or burnt, but an all-day embarrassment is a bit much. People notice this kind of thing, but Bernard took it all in his stride and put up with the gentle banter in good humour. Of course those who worked with him did not let him get away with this minor health slip, and all had their thoughts and comments about how to stay out of the sun. After this had died down

thoughts turned to uses for a very red man. We thought about hiring him out to the council as a standby traffic light, but he soon put a stop to that. Then we thought he could be a spokesman for the Labor party, but he didn’t like us being too liberal with his favours. There were vague suggestions of rolling out the red carpet, but he wasn’t really matte red. Bernard is a graphic artist, but he really only saw one colour that week, and in the end I think he got a bit bored with all the jokes at his expense. Time to ramp it up a bit then. But realistically, there are only so many times you can tell the same jokes, and we left it as read he was red. As the jokes wore off, so did the sunburn and Bernard became a member of normal society again. But he had better watch

himself in the sun, if he does it again in December he’ll have a whole new career line as Santa Claus or at least one of the reindeers. You know, the red-nosed one. I don’t know his inclination, but there may be a role as the fairy on the top of the tree. You can never have too many baubles at that time of the year, but then again I think it’s only his face which had the

sunburn. Of course this is a bit unfair of me, ridiculing the poor man who should have stayed in the shade. But to save his embarrassment I changed his name, that way you’ll never know it was Brendan Gray, not red, who spent too long sunning himself. Fool. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

KATIE NOONAN

OU know Katie Noonan, and she’s coming to Castlemaine in October. She’s been part of your sonic life since the mid–late 90s, and since then she’s done near everything. Jazz? As befits a classicallytrained musician, she’s recorded with world-class musicians as well as working with her trio Elixir with Stephen Magnusson and her husband Zac Hurren. Dance? Her smoothly funky Skin album went top 10. Classical music? She’s been guest soloist with every Symphony orchestra in Australia, toured and recorded with acclaimed classical guitarist Karin Schaupp, toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Dance Company. Despite this diverse activity, “Bands are where I started and where I feel most comfortable,” she said. And now we have Transmu-

tant: the first full-length work album by Katie Noonan’s Vanguard. “I started in George in April ’95 – I was only just 18 – and that was my main thing for 10 years,” she explains. “And then I had the challenge of becoming what you’d call a solo artist.” The result was 2006’s Skin, which was “very pop and very fun, but I realised how much I missed working with a band and working with guitars and pedals and making different sounds.” Her desire to find “a bigger, broader, trippier, dirtier palette to choose from” led to Katie Noonan and the Captains, formed out of the musicians who helped bring Skin to the stage. “The Captains had electronics in that there were samples and stuff, but this explores that a little more,” Noonan said. “I bought this very cool vintage drum machine and we played around with a lot of vin-

tage keyboards and synths – it’s been about opening up the sound a little more.” New album Transmutant still takes in a lot of sonic terrain. Aside from her core band, Noonan also drew on the rich community of musicians she’d met along her journey. One of the album’s highlights exists through pure luck. The haunting, dreamlike An Unwinnable Race was thought lost, but survived thanks to one dedicated fan. “I lost my music for it and thankfully someone posted it on YouTube from a gig four years ago in Perth!” she said. “It was the first time I played it! So I managed to re-learn my own song.” The band will be taking the album on the road through October/November including Castlemaine on October 16. UILDFORD writer Ellie Marney has won the Davitt Award in the Best Young Adult Novel category for her novel Every Word, the second in her three novels in the Every series. Centred around a teen crime-fighting Mycroft and Watt who head to London to solve a crime, Every Word takes the reader into the world of rare books. The awards, now in their 15th year, are sponsored by the Sisters in Crime organisation which promotes crime books by Australian women. A record total of 96 books by Australian women crime writers were in contention at the Davitt Awards. Leading UK crime writer, Sophie Hannah, presented the awards at a gala dinner held last month. Big Little Lies by Sydney writer Liane Moriarty has won Sisters in Crime’s Davitt Award for Best Adult Novel. Big Little Lies, which opens with a death at the local primary school’s trivia night, has sold a million copies in the US alone. Impersonation

S

O far in delving into aspects of some of the individual personalities and their contribution to the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders, I have been able to give you only a few cursory impressions. When faced with the name J Ryan, I had a choice as there were quite a number of people who shared that name. Which one was it that was in this Ethiopian Serenaders charitable group? Initially I had the thought that this could have been J Ryan, a well known Bendigo mine manager. Upon looking at his photograph it was nowhere near the same man as the face of the gentleman shown here today. There were five John Ryans, their occupations varied as a butcher of Hargreaves Street, a gentleman living in Mollison Street, a railway employee of Barry Street, a labourer of Nolan Street, a miner of Langston Street and an hotel keeper of Mount Korong Road (now called Eaglehawk Road). One Ryan was named Jeremiah, he being a labourer of Malcolm Street. While there were four James Ryans, a railway employee of Breen Street, a hotel keeper in Napier Street, a butcher from Neale Street and the most unlikely candidate of all, a retired farmer. As has been brought out in the story thus far the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders were for the most part involved in impersonation. The very fact that these groups frequently blackened their faces illustrates that point. Impersonations were nothing new, there were gender impersonations – a few weeks ago I illustrated this with Walter Henry Bradley who acted the role of a prima donna. As there were no female members of the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders, the reversal of gender roles just did not occur. However, simultaneous to the life of

Hidden lives of Afghans

this charitable group there was the case of a miner, known as Edward De Lacy Evans, who had masqueraded as a male for years. Whenever the Ethiopian Serenaders were performing the paying public expected to see “coons”, or “coon” impersonations. Originally the word “coon” was not considered derogatory, however after the American Civil War, this appellation began to take on more and more negative connotations. Today the term has become completely unacceptable. A “coon” could also have been a rustic, someone from the back blocks totally unexposed to the times.

...they would act out stereotypical roles through imitation, drama and mimicking... A “coon” was considered to be a person of African descent who was there for the entertainment of Caucasians. In the case of serenaders they would act out stereotypical roles through imitation, drama and mimicking which was frequently, in today’s terms, disparaging, offensive and illustrated contempt. “Coon” encapsulated racial hatred it became a slur of the most negative kind. Similarly the term “Chinaman”, originally it just meant someone that came from China. “Chinaman” was no different to the term “Frenchman” or “Englishman”. However by the time the goldrush was in progress “Chinaman” was still inoffensive, but derogatory

J Ryan, the impersonator. connotations were soon latched onto this term. If someone did not know a person’s name or thought that they could not or be bothered to write a name in Roman letters then the person or individual was simply referred to as “John Chinaman”. “John Chinaman” became as offensive a term as any of the other racially implied negative words to describe certain groups of people. False representation of racial stereotypes was engendered through the roles that were played out by the Ethiopian Serenaders. At that time in the 19th century few questioned these fraudulent actions. In reality the stereotypes were most misleading and a misrepresentation which helped to reinforce the prejudice that existed. We may well wonder what role J Ryan had in his impersonation of a Chinese?

HAT would drive a mother to willingly dress her newborn baby girl in masculine clothing and assign her a boy’s name? Why would parents choose to begin disguising their six-year-old daughter as a son? And what would motivate a pubescent teenager to pray that god grant her a flat chest and facial hair? These are questions Swedish journalist Jenny Nordberg answers in The Underground Girls of Kabul, an exploration of the littlementioned but entrenched practice among Afghan families of raising a selected female child as male. Although this tradition is virtually unknown in the West, in Afghanistan so important is it to produce an heir that even “a made-up son is better than none at all”. Thus, the pattern of anointing one daughter to become a household’s bacha posh (literally “dressed like a boy”) continues to flourish, albeit covertly. Through extended interviews with five such boy-girls of varying ages, Nordberg explores the

thinking behind the choices made by parents and, later, by a minority of the bacha posh themselves as they approach adulthood and fight to retain their male identities. For some, the rationale for their gender-bending upbringing is purely practical: a divorcée needs to have a protective young man in her home for the sake of respectability, a poor couple depends on income from a boy’s after-school work to put food on the table for their younger children, a son is required to act as a bodyguard for vulnerable siblings. For others, however, the situation is far more nuanced: experiencing a false boyhood enables a little girl to taste freedom to a degree that is simply unfathomable for a female child in Afghan society. It is this liberty that some bacha posh are reluctant to relinquish as they mature and are pressured to embrace a future as prospective brides. – Rosalea Ryan

Trout for Eppalock By STEVE CHARLES

LAST weekend was open season for trout on Victorian rivers so I travelled with friends to the Otways for some bream fishing on the fly and to explore a few rainforest streams for trout. While we have had more successful catch-rates on our trips, this one was memorable for it’s spectacular Victorian countryside. From the rolling sands and breaking surf down at the Aire River inlet, to the majestic Otways rainforest in the soaring hills to the north, it was a trip of great contrasts. Fly fishing is more than just a means of catching fish; it takes us to places that are truly breathtaking. Locally Barkers Creek Reservoir has slowed in recent weeks, however there are still trout and redfin being caught. As spring approaches and the local insect life re-emerges things should pick up once 2016: Local fish stocking. CAIRN CURRAN RESERVOIR Golden Perch

again as the trout realise there is food to be had from above. Vic Fish Stocking meetings were recently held and attended by Alan Chisholm of the Bendigo & District Fly Fishers to determine the stocking regime for the coming year. I am happy to report that Barkers Creek Reservoir will again be stocked with 5000 brown trout yearlings to bolster its return to being a successful local fishery. Other highlights in our region are as shown below. This will be the first time in many years that brown trout have been stocked in Lake Eppalock and only time will tell if it can be developed into a successful combined native and trout fishery. One thing is certain, there will be improved chances to catch fish in our local waters in the years to come. If you’re interested in learning more about fly fishing check out the Bendigo & District Fly Fishing Club website: www.bdffc. weebly.com or find us on facebook.

ANOTHER Murray cod season has drawn to a close and plenty of Victorian anglers have experienced some rod buckling action which should tie them over until the season resumes in December. The Central Victorian Lure Casters Super Series and the Bendigo Legion Angling Club both held separate events at Mulwala and Stevens Weir before the season’s closure, resulting in plenty of activity for those attending. A CVLCSS prefish competition on the last Saturday of August at Mulwala had 90 competitors trying their luck before the main event, the following morning, with some eight Murray cod and three golden perch caught. Justin Rees took out first prize of the Gangster Lures Daily Double with his 89 centimetre cod on a Custom Craft Hammerhead, but it was his partner Karen’s 81cm fish on a cast spinnerbait that caused the most excitement. Not a bad team effort considering Karen’s previous PB was achieved with a 65cm cod caught in an earlier CVLCSS round during the year. The Sunday’s final round of the 2015 Super Series attracted 102 competitors with some 20 cod caught. Russell Aston won the round with three cod between 54cm and 69cm, closely beating second place Simon Burke with a 57cm and a monster 114cm cod. Third placed Jason Lillu also got among the prizes with his two cod between 65cm and 54 cm. Simon’s bigger fish was also the largest fish of the round resulting in an

additional $204 cash prize. Meanwhile 100 or so kilometres to the north-west two dozen anglers from the BLAC tried their luck for the Presidents Cup on the Edward River above Stevens Weir. Lures cast or trolled proved unusually ineffective despite water clarity being no worse than usual. However, most anglers who came fully prepared with a range of baits enjoyed a successful trip. Bardi grubs and yabbies seemed to be the bait of choice with three cod in excess of 75cm released. Daryl Longmuir enjoyed a trip to remember, boating numerous cod with bardi grubs with two in excess of 75cm on the Saturday and was looking a certainty for the Cup until Peter Wyatt pipped him at the post with a 80cm and 65cm cod, both on yabbies. Jayden and Peter Rice also troubled the club statistician with a nice bag of six golden perch angled on bait between 38cm and 48cm along with outgoing club president Andrew Wilkinson with a 55cm cod. And if you didn’t get among the cod or any fish for that matter, keep an eye out at various Bendigo shopping centres for the Rotary Club of Bendigo South’s fishing boat raffle, drawn early December. Alternatively phone Tony Plant on 0408 590 589 for a ticket for your chance to land a big one. VERY spring it’s the same old story. We know we have about three months to lose weight and get fit in time for summer. And we know losing those extra kilos will also make us feel much more cool and comfortable over the hot summer months. The basic formula for losing weight is to eat less and exercise more and this is where Mr Rental can help you. There is no need to join a gym. Mr Rental has equipment that will suit all your needs, equipment that you can use when it is convenient for you, not the gym. Mr Rental has low impact crosstrainers and exercise bikes. You can either manually adjust the bikes or use computer

SPRAY ON CONCRETE

controlled bikes that program-in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. All this equipment is well maintained and quite so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and sizes of people. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125kg and go at 16kph. While that might not sound fast, compared to a car at 16kph you would travel over 5km in 20 minutes. So if you want look great this summer then give Daryl a ring at Mr Rental on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778 or call in to 80b Garsed Street, Bendigo.

Hi, my name is Teddy. I’m an adorable little fluff ball. I will need a mature family as little kids may be too full on for me. I have lived with other dogs and a cat in the past. I’m desexed and micro chipped ready.

Storm eyes final STRATHFIELDSAYE Storm is on the cusp of another first in the club’s young history, with the chance to make the club’s first Bendigo Football Netball League A-grade netball grand final. The Storm’s A-grade side takes on Golden Square on Saturday night in the second semi final, with the winner to earn a week off and advance through to the decider in two weeks. Strathfieldsaye scored a dominant win over Sandhurst last weekend in the qualifying final, erasing a five-goal quarter time margin to run out 36-25 winners.

However, the tests do not get much tougher than Golden Square with the Bulldogs yet to lose a game this season. Led by goal shooter Gabe Richards and the defensive work of Allira Hammond, Square has been the class of the competition in 2015. But the Storm’s defence, led by Kate Burton and Fiona Themann, should see a great battle come 6pm on Saturday night. In the weekend’s other A-grade netball final Gisborne tackles Sandhurst, with the loser packing its bags for season 2015. Sandhurst will be

looking to rebound after its disappointing showing against the Storm, while Gisborne only just snuck through to the game amid controversy surrounding the result of its elimination final with Kangaroo Flat. At the final whistle the scoreboard showed a draw and players were getting ready to play extra time, however a review of the scorecard showed a onegoal win to Gisborne. Kangaroo Flat appealed the decision but that ws dismissed by the BFNL board, seeing Gisborne advance to take on the Dragons. The match-up between

Sandhurst goal defence Heather Oliver and Gisborne goal attack Maddy Stewart could decide the outcome in the cut-throat final, which gets under way at 2pm on Sunday. In week two of BFNL senior football finals, Strathfieldsaye plays its first 2015 final against Golden Square from 6pm on Saturday with the winner to progress straight through to the grand final in two weeks time. Sunday’s elimination semi final sees Sandhurst play Eaglehawk in a rematch of the last round of the home and away season, a contest Sandhurst won by 50 points.

CHAMPS: The Bendigo Senior team took out the state title.

BSSC dominates in netball BENDIGO Senior Secondary College took out a state title this week when its girls netball team scored a dominant win at the School Sports Victoria netball finals at Waverley on Monday. The Lauren Martin-coached team won two of its three group matches, only going down to Maribyrnong Sports Academy in the first game of the day 26-22. After finishing second in its

group, the BSSC squad took on Berwick Secondary College in the semi-final. Having not played Berwick in the pool matches the BSSC team was in for a tough battle, but took the match convincingly 32-25. The team’s consistent play led it to the final where it would again come up against Maribyrnong, with a chance for redemption after its loss in the pool

matches. The side played outstanding netball to completely dominate their opponents and ran away with an impressive 33-22 victory. The winning BSSC squad: Dayna McGough, Abbey Ryan, Sharna Appleby, Milly Wicks, Elley Lawton, Zoe Davies, Ava Lowndes, Siobhan Keogh, Adelaide Annand and Lauren Martin (coach).

“Last year we probably tried to play it down a fair bit and didn’t let the guys enjoy it. “After the win last Saturday I said to them ‘enjoy it, there are seven other clubs that want to be in our position so make the most of it’ and hope-

Hopefully they enjoy everything that comes their way fully they enjoy everything that comes their way.” First bounce in Saturday’s grand final is at 2.30pm. The day gets under way when White Hills tackles

LEADER: North Bendigo’s Rob Bennett. North Bendigo in the under17s from 9.30am, Colbinabbin and Mount Pleasant meet in the reserves from 11.50am. The A-grade netball decider gets under way at 3pm, with Colbinabbin meeting Huntly in A-reserve, North Bendigo doing battle with Mount Pleasant in B-grade, White Hills taking on Letchville-Gunbower in B-reserve and under-17 and Leitchville also taking on LBU in the under-15s.

Griffin back in training regime BENDIGO Spirit coach Simon Pritchard expects two-time Rachel Sporn Trophy winner Kelsey Griffin to be able to train with the team when she arrives in Bendigo this week. Griffin is still recovering from off-season surgery which derailed her WNBA campaign with Connecticut Sun, but Pritchard said this week he is confident that the star forward will able to train at least in part come her first session on Monday. The team had its first full training session on Monday with 11 of the 13 squad members in attendance – only Griffin and Joy Burke, currently playing in the FIBA Asian Championships, were absent. “We are a little bit later

than all the other teams, most have been going for two to three weeks so we are late getting started but we have netball finals and the Bendigo Lady Braves season wrapping up that we have had to deal with,” Pritchard said on Tuesday. “We had 11 at training last night and our squad is 13, so that allowed me to do a lot of teaching and just setting up how trainings will run and drills initially. “I spoke to Kelsey this morning and she is very hopeful, she will definitely be on court on Monday and going at reduced minutes while we build her up which will probably take three weeks.” The team will play three preseason games in the lead up to its October 9 season opener against South East Queensland.

The Spirit takes on Townsville the following day in a challenging opening weekend road trip. “September 19 we have Ballarat then the next day we play Perth, and both of those games are in Ballarat,” Pritchard said. “Then we come back and train that week then head to

advantageous to get an early look at Perth, a team Bendigo faces three times in the season’s opening two months. “They will be pretty good, they have a quality program with a great coach and they are quite big so they will be a good test,” he said. The Spirit’s 2015/16 squad:

Six-hour epic at Big Hill THE Bendigo Mountain Bike Club will host one of its biggest events of the year this weekend, with the Bendigo six-hour held at the club’s brand new Big Hill facility. The event doubles as round five of the Victorian Enduro series, and sees the unique track in use for the first time. The club has held several working bees to prepare for the event and a big field is set to hit the trails on Sunday. The track features two loops linked by a fully carpeted flyover and is just over 11 kilometres in length. The six and three-hour enduro events consist of solo riders and teams competing for most laps over a six-hour duration and a threehour solo session aimed at all, from mountain biking novices through to seasoned pros. All riders compete on the same course, consisting of berms, wooden structures and plenty of flowing single track. The Bendigo Cycles and Skratch

THE Central Victorian Veterans Cycling Club held its club championships at Newbridge last Saturday with good numbers in attendance and the weather perfect for racing. The men’s race had 28 starters for the two-lap circuit through Tarnagulla and Laanecoorie. A spirited bunch finish saw Marty Banfield take the victory, with Noel Hughes and David Cheal taking second and third respectively. Cait Fraser-Jones took out the women’s event with Cheryle Barker taking second and Jenny Farrow third while an unlucky Wendy Bennett punctured two kilometres from the finish. The Bendigo Weekly-sponsored graded scratch race series sees Neil Blakely leading the standings on 17 points. Second on 16 points are Ross Ogilvie and Brett Williams while Michelle Francis and Nicole McNamara are third on 15, with Jim Field just one point behind. Two further Saturday races and a few Wednesday twilights are still to come so the winner of this series could come from anywhere with six, five and four points available for a win or place at each race.

Dogs aiming high By JOEL PETERSON NORTH Bendigo will aim to erase the pain of last year’s heartbreaking Heathcote District Football League grand final loss when the Dogs meet Leitchville Gunbower in the 2015 decider at Huntly this Saturday. The Dogs have not won a flag since the second of the club’s back-toback triumphs in 1977, in what was then the Golden City Football League. Last year North went down by nine points to Lockington Bamawm United in the grand final after leading at every change, and Bulldogs co-coach Rob Bennett says the loss will provide some extra motivation. “As coaches we haven’t spoken about it to the boys but they are professional and I’m sure they want to take it a step further after the disappointment of last year,” Bennett said. “Last year is last year, we can’t dwell on that. This is a whole new year and a whole new challenge and that is the way we are looking at it.” Bennett says the Dogs will have a full side to pick from with the ex-

The tests do not get any bigger than Leitchville, who only lost one game during the home and away season. That singular loss came against North in round 18, but the Bombers will have their best available 22 on the park come Saturday after having several out in the last round game at Leitchville. “They are the best side all year, they have a 16-1 record and to win that first final so comprehensively was impressive,” Bennett said. “They haven’t got a weak link in

their side. Some sides you come up against you can nominate maybe a bottom three or four players in their side but Leitchville don’t fall away. “They are a professional, committed outfit and they really work well for each other. We will have to definitely be at our best to beat them on the weekend.” The Dogs will also take on Colbinabbin in the Heathcote District Netball Association A-grade grand final, and Bennett said there is a good feeling around the club. “It’s always good to be good in grand final week and to have the whole club involved is great,” he said. Continued Page 37
