THE City of Greater Bendigo is celebrating one of its greatest weeks, following news of a $1.3 billion dollar federal government investment in Hawkei armoured vehicles to be built in Bendigo. The deal, described by supporters of the project as the biggest contract in Bendigo’s long and proud history, will see the Hawkei vehicle move into production at the world-leading Thales North Bendigo plant, home of the Bushmaster.

Bendigo shows positive growth

Monday’s early morning news was confirmed by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in an announcement at the Monegeetta testing facility, and there are high hopes that the first domestic order will set the scene for even more export orders for the Hawkei. Council put forward its own arsenal of major announcements this

week, with the much anticipated $15 million redevelopment of the Bendigo airport moving a step closer on Tuesday. Council has confirmed the project tender will be released later this month, and that five companies have been shortlisted for the works, with the council keen for locals to get involved.

Then, yesterday, the Greater Bendigo Aquatic, Leisure and Wellbeing Complex in Kangaroo Flat and the expansion of the Bendigo Stadium in West Bendigo both took centre stage as council confirmed it was set to call for Expressions of Interest for construction of both projects, which represent a combined $46.5 million of works, a figure believed to be the

largest for a council project in the city’s history. And the Bendigo Art Gallery is set to announce its latest international blockbuster exhibition today, with confirmation of yet another major coup, at a media conference from 11.45am at the gallery. The yet-to-be-revealed exhibition is set to open in March 2016, and it’s understood Victorian government support has again been crucial in securing the event for Bendigo. More reports Page 5 OPINIONS Page 23

RAY White Bendigo managing director Rory Somerville has praised the strength of the local real estate market as Bendigo agents prepare for their busiest weekend of the year so far. Mr Somerville said his firm was receiving strong inquiry, including from interstate, from potential buyers, and that the local real estate industry was only likely to improve even further on the back of this week’s announcement of the $1.3 billion Hawkei armoured vehicle contract. He also said that the firm’s property management team had reported the average days on the market for rental properties had dropped due to increasing demand for rentals. Having quickly established a reputation as an innovative and dedicated real estate agency, Ray White Bendigo is also

as another great example of confidence in the local market. While Ray White Bendigo is still a relative newcomer to the local real estate industry, the Bendigo office is backed by the 110-year-old family business and locally, has more than 17 years of combined experience within the real estate industry.

Believing in Bendigo Residents celebrate diversity in show of strength opposing protests on city streets loomed. Saturday’s rallies include the Rally For Diversity at the Bendigo Town Hall from noon, while antimosque protesters are expected to rally in Rosalind Park after 2.30pm. “We need to continue to show those who in no way reflect the majority voice of our community, who use racism, violence and hatred to be heard and who instil fear in others, that Bendigo is a

community of diversity and that enough is enough. Bendigo has rejected their views and their ac-

support for Bendigo by displaying yellow throughout their homes, businesses and sports

THOUSANDS of Bendigo residents celebrated diversity and condemned hatred by creating a sea of yellow during the Believe in Bendigo picnic event celebrated in the Civic Gardens last weekend. Against a background of glorious spring weather, the Believe in Bendigo picnic at the Town Hall showed support for the city’s inclusiveness, and an intolerance of violence and division. Believe in Bendigo group member Jayson Tayeh said it was important that colourful reminder continued this week, as the spectre of yet another day of

clubs. It’s time to show the world what Bendigo is really like and what we believe in. “Put some streamers on your

front door, some balloons on your letterbox or a Believe in Bendigo poster in the window of your home or business. “It is now Bendigo’s turn to show minority groups, cultures and religions that they are welcome here.’’ The Believe in Bendigo group has urged people to reconsider attending any protests this weekend, instead recommending people have family time and time with loved ones at one of the many community and sporting events scheduled for the weekend.

Police ready for crowd POLICE have acknowledged tomorrow’s anti-mosque rally and counter rally could draw a larger number of protesters into the city than previous rallies in late August. Victoria Police Superintendent Mick West said local law enforcement had been working closely with the City of Greater Bendigo to try and mitigate the risk of the rallies clashing. “(The rally) is going to be at least the same size,” Supt West said. “We’re very comfortable with our planning, I’m very comfortable that we have enough people to ensure the beautiful city of Bendigo doesn’t get disrupted too much. “And we’re very hopeful we don’t see anything inappropriate up here from the people coming into the town.” He said roadblocks would not be utilised to the same extent as they were during the August 29 rallies, and their “aim” was to try and ensure the rallies stayed separate. “I’m confident we have the resources, the expertise and the commitment to do that,” Supt West said. “We’re just here to make sure that the community doesn’t get disrupted, there’s no violence, dam-

age, anything along those lines.” The public are encouraged to go about their everyday business, however Supt West urged them to consider their need to go into areas where the rallies are planned to take place. “Just go about your business. Victoria police are here to keep you safe, to ensure that you can go about your business the way you normally would,” he said. “The issue is we’re going to have more people in town. It’ll be harder to get around in certain areas of the city. “If you’ve got to come into an area where the rallies are taking place, if it’s not urgent, save yourself the grief.” Following the fake beheading of a dummy last weekend by farright anti-mosque group the United Patriots Front, Supt West said police weren’t concerned the stunt would further inflame anti-Islam sentiment. “It’s a disgusting prank and certainly shouldn’t have taken place in Bendigo,” he said. “Investigations are pretty advanced in relation to that incident, so watch this space.” – Laura Hurley

SOD TURNED: Robyn Trainor, Maree Edwards, Jacinta Allan, Julie Oberin and Elena Wilson. THE day was a long time coming but it was well worth the wait for Annie North Women’s Refuge CEO Julie Oberin. Observing Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan turning the first sod of soil on the new cluster-model facility for women, Ms Oberin said the project has been fifteen years in the planning. “It’s been a long hard slog, planning and fund raising but building will start on the new facility at the start of November and we expect it to be finished by the end of 2016,” Ms Oberin said. The innovative, cluster-design building will provide women and children with a safe environment which will also offer therapeutic and education facilities. Ms Oberin said that a client

Peter Kelly

focus group had been consulted when the new facility was being designed. It consists of six, self contained units for mothers and their children, and will also provide accommodation for single women. The project will incorporate an administrative block, recreation, therapeutic and education facilities, including a computer laboratory. The garden will be based on the Stephanie Alexander model which incorporates an education curriculum. While it is preferable that women stay in their own homes during a domestic violence crisis, Ms Oberin said that until integrated responses to domestic violence could be implemented, there was still a vital need for high-security

facilities. “The women will be able to stay here while the justice system works to ensure their long term safety. There will be video-conferencing facilities so that women will be protected from the stress of court appearances.” Local community service organisations, Zonta, Inner Wheel, Rotary Club of Bendigo and Rotary Club of Bendigo South are fundraising to enhance the facility. The new family violence facility is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. Both Ms Allan and Maree Edwards, member for Bendigo West commended the project while at the same time deploring the fact that family violence was still entrenched in Australian society.

City builds on success

By LAURA HURLEY

TWO of Bendigo’s biggest planned construction projects will soon get the green light. The City of Greater Bendigo yesterday announced it was seeking expressions of interest for the construction of an aquatic centre at Kangaroo Flat and the expansion of the Bendigo Stadium in West Bendigo. The combined total budget of the two projects is $46.5 million, with both projects expected to go to tender early next year. Mayor Peter Cox said the redevelopment projects were part of the largest package of works council has ever released. “These two projects are very exciting for Greater Bendigo and council is looking forward to seeing them both progress,” Cr Cox said. “Both contracts are expected to

go to tender in early 2016 with construction to be commenced shortly afterwards. “The stadium is expected to take about 12 months to complete while construction of the new aquatic complex should take 15 months to complete.” The announcement follows another announcement from council earlier this week that it had shortlisted five preferred companies for the construction of the runway at Bendigo Airport. “It’s even more significant considering it is coming off the back of the $15 million Bendigo Airport revelopment tender that we released earlier this week,” Cr Cox said. “With the planning permits issued we are now moving into the procurement phase for both of these major projects.” The Greater Bendigo Aquatic,

announcement: Mayor Peter Cox speaks to media. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN Leisure and Wellbeing Complex, located at Kangaroo Flat, includes a

50m eight lane Olympic swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, learn to

swim pool, spa, sauna, gym, group fitness and multipurpose rooms, cafe, change rooms, child minding facilities, landscaped lawn areas and carpark. The expansion of the Bendigo Stadium includes a three court/show court expansion, an upgrade to the existing 12 court outdoor netball facility and construction of spectator seating to cater for up to 4000 people. Cr Cox said both projects were about responding to the recreation needs of the Bendigo community. “Council is committed to providing facilities that not only enhance our resident’s health and wellbeing, but also respond to their overall recreation needs and attract major events that are important to our economy,” he said. Church opens door to Syrian refugees The Catholic Education Office has announced plans to provide assistance to refugees from Syria and Iraq who wish to settle in the Sandhurst Diocese. Episcopal Vicar for Education, the Very Rev. Dr Brian Boyle said discussions between the diocese of Sandhurst and the director of Catholic Education Sandhurst, Mr Paul Desmond, had led to a pledge to provide places for Syrian and Iraqi children in Sandhurst schools, including financial assistance. “We believe it is likely that some of these refugee families will settle in north-eastern Victoria and together with other Catholic agencies such as Caritas and CatholicCare, Catholic Education is keen to do its part to enable these families to settle in Australia happily and be well accepted into the Australian community after the traumatic experiences of war and dislocation in Syria and Iraq,” Fr Boyle said. “While the provision of housing and accommodation are not the particular skill set of the Catholic Education Office and these needs are best left to other government and Catholic Church agencies, Catholic Education can assist directly in meeting an urgent and necessary need of refugee families settling in central and north-eastern Victoria: a place in the local school for their children where they will be safe,

IN BUSINESS: More than 1100 Hawkei armoured vehicles have been ordered.

Battle won as Hawkei order secured A SEVEN-year battle to have the Hawkei armoured vehicle built in Bendigo has been won, following confirmation earlier this week of a $1.3 billion federal government contract, which is also the largest contract ever awarded in Bendigo. The order for 1100 vehicles and more than 1000 trailers is expected to provide up to four years production work at the Thales plant in North Bendigo, and deliver substantial economic spin-offs for the local economy. Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox described Monday’s announcement as a “ticker tape day” for the city. “You hear people claiming that manufacturing is dead in Australia. Well, it’s alive and thriving in Bendigo,” Cr Cox said.

“The Prime Minister’s announcement is fantastic news for our region. It secures a future for the employees at Thales in Bendigo and it further builds on our city’s reputation as a hub for high quality manufacturing.” Hawkei follows the life-saving success of the larger Bushmaster vehicle, which has protected Australian and other troops in some of the most challenging combat environments on earth. Thales chief executive officer Chris Jenkins said Hawkei is a highly capable vehicle that will serve Australia well for many years to come. ‘’We are proud to have been chosen to deliver this next generation of protected vehicles to our armed forces, and we stand by them ready to sup-

port and adapt it as their requirements evolve.’’ Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the announcement was great news for manufacturing, jobs and the local economy here in Bendigo. “These high skill, high value manufacturing jobs are just what our community needs. “It’s fantastic that after dragging their feet for so long, the Federal Government has finally committed to building the Hawkei here in Bendigo.” The Australian government contract is the first for Hawkei, with Thales executives optimistic of further highly prized export orders for the world-class vehicle. 4glanville Page 22

cared for and well educated.” The offer to provide places for children of Syrian and Iraqi refugee families by the Catholic Education Office includes costs associated with education including, uniforms, excursions, books, and IT items. Director of Catholic Education Sandhurst, Paul Desmond said the cost of these items would be covered for all Syrian and Iraqi refugee children enrolled in Sandhurst primary and secondary schools for an initial period of two to three years, as families established themselves in Australia. “Further, we anticipate that one of the specific needs of Syrian and Iraqi refugee children who may enter our schools is English language tuition. We imagine few such children would speak English. The Catholic Education Office will undertake the costs of the provision of professional English language tuition for Syrian and Iraqi refugee children who are enrolled in our schools,” Mr Desmond said. The arrival of refugee families in Australia from the end of this year will present both challenges and opportunities for the community, and Catholic Education Sandhurst sees the offer to provide education in Catholic schools as being consistent with the Gospel and the social teaching of the Catholic Church.

Tender out for runway THERE are blue skies ahead for the Bendigo Airport, after the City of Greater Bendigo shortlisted five companies who have been invited to tender for the construction of the runway. It is expected the winning contractor will be announced by Christmas, with work set to proceed on the runway early next year. The 1600 metre runway is part of the $15 million airport expansion, and will be able to carry aircraft of up to 70 passengers. Bendigo Airport Advisory Committee chair James Williams said the expansion was important for the future of Bendigo, and the announcement meant the airport was fast becoming a reality. “For me it’s very much a step

in the right direction, I think it will enable a lot of things,” Cr Williams said. “It’s all a very progressive thing, it’s building the future and it’s building the economic capabilities of the future. “This is a real economic drive for Bendigo going forward, it’s a big city now – it’s 100,000 people and it’ll go to 150,000 in the next 20 to 30 years. “We believe people will use this airport not so much with international travel, but certainly for domestic travel and regional travel.” City futures director Stan Liacos said the announcement meant council are now at the “pointy end” of the project. “So what we’ve done is we’ve put out expressions of interest, we’ve got the money

– city, federal and state – $15 million has been amassed,” Mr Liacos said. “Lots of civil construction companies have made expressions of interest, and we’ve shortlisted to five tip top companies. All of them with strong aviation experience.” Cr Williams believed by shortlisting the top five tenders, the airport would benefit from a competitive process. “By shortlisting them we believe we’ve created a competitive nature for those contracts,” he said. “As with a lot of contracts there’s a lot of options on how it can be done. “So I guess it’s assessing which of those options is beneficial for the city in terms of maintenance and longevity.”

FINALS: Council’s Stan Liacos and James Williams with airport manager Phil Hansen.

Time to have a say GREATER Bendigo mayor Peter Cox, is encouraging residents to participate in the third Bendigo Wellbeing Survey. The survey is open to everyone in Greater Bendigo and seeks to help the Council to achieve its vision of Greater Bendigo – working together to be Australia’s most liveable regional city. “The results will help us to better understand what makes our municipality liveable and what improvements are needed for it to be the most liveable regional city in Australia,” Cr Cox said. “The results will not only inform our own decision-making, but will also give us powerful data to lobby other levels of government about issues that are important to our community, but not necessarily in Council’s control.” The survey asks for community views and priorities on a range of matters, including: demographic questions about the

household - where do people live, work, socialise, buy groceries and access services; community satisfaction within different areas of the municipality; views on social and cultural life, community and civic engagement; leadership and decision-making; local services and facilities; health and wellbeing; productivity; transport; and sustainability. The results of the October 2015 Wellbeing Survey will be available in early 2016. The results of the 2011, 2014 and 2015 will then be compared to identify trends and changes, as well as a detailed analysis across age groups and suburbs. The survey is open until the end of October and can be easily completed online at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/wellbeingsurvey. It will take around 20 minutes to complete and is anonymous. Printed copies are also available from City offices or by phoning 5434 6148.

Solar makes light work A SOLAR power plant to supply electricity to the Goldfields Library was launched on Monday. It’s a joint venture between the Goldfields Library, City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Sustainability Group and includes a 20kW solar system on the roof of the library. The library will obtain about 10 per cent of its energy from locally generated renewable sources. The Bendigo Sustainability Group is responsible for funding, installation and maintenance of the solar system. The council and the BSG have entered into a 20 year power purchase agreement meaning the council will buy the electricity from the BSG at commercial rates. This project will provide a sustainable income stream that can be used to reinvest in other local sus-

The BSG team’s Keith Reynard said it’s been a major achievement. “It has taken nearly two years to develop and involved state governmental ministerial approval. It’s also proven a great model that we hope to roll out across the rest of the council,” he said.

Places for Change will be coming to town on Thursday, October 15, and is centred around creating conversation about transforming Bendigo. Spaces for activation range from old churches to parks, laneways and car parks. Make a Change Australia director of social enterprise Karen Corr said there were already examples of events

making Bendigo a more vibrant place. “There are so many great examples in Bendigo,” Ms Corr said. “Initiatives like the incredibly successful temporary activation of spaces like the Moonlight, Trove and Farmer’s Marketet. “The Bendigo Library is an example of a public space that is more than a home for books. It is a place to work, to meet others, learn new skills and hang out. “A really interesting example is the

upcoming Pop Up Art project where young and emerging regional artists are transforming Bendigo Market Place into a temporary gallery.” The keynote speaker will be Marcus Westbury. Outside the Square Places for Change is taking place at 7pm on October 15 at the Old Chruch on the Hill (cnr of Harkness and Russell Streets, Quarry Hill). Fitness the aim in Bendigo A two-day fitness event will take over the streets of Bendigo aiming to encourage residents to have a go. The Bendigo Fit Weekend on October 31 and November 1 is a first for Bendigo which will provide residents with an opportunity to have try out more than 30 different sports lead by a team of experts. Other highlights include the Australia’s Strongest Man competition – competitors will be tested by pulling a tram along Pall Mall – Highland Games, emergency services representatives going head to head, come and try sessions and nutritional seminars. Fitness crusader, gym owner and Arnold Schwarzenegger business partner, Tony Doherty, said the aim of the event is to get people off the couch and moving. “The 2014 City of Greater Bendigo Active Living Census found

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, October 9, 2015

Mosque development Q&A The proposed development of Bendigo’s first mosque has caused some misunderstanding in the community. Many claims have been made that are simply untrue. The City of Greater Bendigo is taking this opportunity to respond to some of the frequently asked questions.

Q Why is a mosque being built in Bendigo? A The mosque will provide a place for Bendigo’s

Muslim community to meet and pray. It will include two prayer halls, classrooms, sports hall, café, library and offices, and will be built in stages. The Victorian Charter for Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 states every person has the right to freedom of religion and the freedom to demonstrate their religion as part of a community. Not allowing the mosque to be built based on religious prejudice would be unconstitutional. Section 116 of the Australian Constitution states the Commonwealth shall not...prohibit the free exercise of any religion...

Q How many Muslims are there in Greater

Bendigo?

A There are approximately 300 Muslim people

in Greater Bendigo, many of whom work as medical professionals, academics, engineers and business people. For the past 20 years the local Muslim community has had access to a room at LaTrobe University that holds approximately 40 people. On Fridays they access a larger room to allow more people (approximately 70) to attend midday prayer.

Q Will there be a call to prayer? A The minaret – a tall, slim tower on a mosque

that typically broadcasts the call to prayer – included as part of the mosque’s design is only symbolic. Condition 26 of the planning permit approved by VCAT also prevents any noise, including a call to prayer, extending beyond the boundaries of the property.

Q Why was the community not consulted,

particularly neighbouring residents?

A They were. Notices were sent to 63 owners and

occupiers in the area around the site for the mosque inviting comment on the application. A public notice was also placed on the site. All submissions/comments were carefully considered in the evaluation process in accordance with the procedures and decisionmaking guidelines set out in Victorian planning law.

Q Will the Council accrue increased rate

Q Who purchased the land where the

revenue from the mosque?

mosque will be built?

A The Australian Islamic Mission purchased the

5.2 acre property. For more information on the Australian Islamic Mission visit www.aim.org.au

Q What is the City of Greater Bendigo’s

interest in the mosque?

A The City of Greater Bendigo is the responsible

planning authority for planning matters. The mosque needed to be considered under the planning rules. This is the City’s only decision making power relating to the mosque. It has no other direct or financial interest in the mosque, nor do any of the Councillors or staff involved in the decision making process.

Q Will the mosque be the biggest in the

southern hemisphere, with a capacity to accommodate at least 2,000 people?

A The conditions on the planning permit limit

the capacity to a maximum of 375 people. The development is modest in terms of other mosque buildings in Australia. At this stage, the City has not received any planning permit applications or enquiries for other mosques to be built in the municipality.

Q What if the hours of operation for the

mosque change in the future?

A The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal

(VCAT) has approved the hours of operation for the mosque. Any proposal to change the operating hours would require planning consent and would be considered on its merits and in accordance with decision-making guidelines.

Q Why will additional facilities such as

a sports hall be built? Can’t they use community facilities that are already built?

A The facilities will be available for wider

Shared facilities are a great way to give the community better access to facilities with less duplication. The City supports the development of such infrastructure that will provide greater opportunity for people to improve their health and wellbeing.

community use too. As the City grows, we will need more facilities for the community. Schools or churches are also sharing their facilities with the wider community when they are not in use.

A No rate revenue will be collected on the

mosque. Once constructed, the mosque will be deemed to be non-rateable as is the case for all places of worship.

Q Why won’t the Council allow a public

vote on the mosque?

A This would achieve nothing. VCAT has ruled in

favour of the proposal and ordered that a permit be granted. There is no legal mechanism for such a decision to be overturned as a result of a local vote at this stage in the process. There are sound practical and legal reasons why such planning matters should not and cannot be decided by popular vote. The Council deals with such matters as a daily occurrence and people already have rights as part of the planning process.

Q But aren’t most people in Bendigo

opposed to the development of a mosque?

A There has been no official/credible polling

or surveys undertaken of Greater Bendigo residents on this topic. Thirteen objectors appealed to VCAT to overturn the Council’s decision to allow a mosque to be built. Of these 13 objectors, two people have taken their case to the Court of Appeal, an arm of the Supreme Court, which is yet to determine an outcome.

Q Is a residential (22,000 homes) currently

underway behind the mosque site?

A No. There is no suitable or available land

around the mosque site to accommodate a housing development on the scale claimed. The land around the mosque site is zoned either Industrial 1 or Low Density Residential and any large-scale development would require an amendment to the Greater Bendigo Planning Scheme, which would be costly, take several years and have no guarantee of meeting the requisites for residential development.

High density residential development is not permitted in a Low Density Residential

Ph: 5434 6000 | www.bendigo.vic.gov.au |

FACTS A THE MO BOUT SQUE Zone (LDRZ).There are no plans in the new Residential Development Strategy to increase residential densities in the area zoned Low Density Residential near the mosque site. Most importantly, the East Bendigo Structure Plan, adopted by the Council and which forms part of the planning scheme, discourages intensification of housing development on this LDRZ land because it forms part of the racehorse precinct near the Bendigo Racecourse. Q But isn’t Haven; Home, Safe (non-profit,

emergency housing organisation) planning a major development near the mosque site?

A No. Haven; Home, Safe (HHS) has rejected any

and all such claims as false and baseless. HHS has neither the capacity nor funds to undertake a building program of such magnitude. HHS is a homelessness service and affordable housing provider. The organisation assists the homeless, people at risk or in housing crisis, and owns or manages fewer than 300 properties in Bendigo.

Q Is the construction of the mosque

due to the recent Federal Government announcement that Australia will increase the number of refugees it takes from Syria?

A There is no link between the Council’s decision

to approve the mosque development and the Federal Government’s recent decision to allow refugees from Syria to come to Australia. The decision on the mosque was made in June 2014, over a year before the Federal Government’s announcement.

Q What is the Safe Haven Enterprise Visa

Scheme and is it connected to the decision to build a mosque?

A The Safe Haven Enterprise Visa Scheme (SHEV)

is a Federal Government initiative that is not yet available. Currently, the State and Federal Government are discussing if Victoria will opt into the scheme. The Municipal Association of Victoria has asked all rural and regional councils to indicate if they are willing to be part of the scheme, should Victoria opt in. There are currently 9,605 refugees in Victoria that would be eligible for a SHEV. Should the State Government opt into the scheme and should any SHEV holders elect to come to Bendigo, they would need to have work or study arrangements in place and organise accommodation. There are a number of local organisations that form the Settlement Network that would be able to assist should SHEV holders move to Bendigo.

Q Why doesn’t the City of Greater Bendigo

ban the anti-mosque rallies Bendigo is experiencing?

A The Victorian Charter of Human Rights and

Responsibilities Act 2006 allows for people to conduct a protest and protects their right to freedom of expression. In accordance with the Charter, the City does not have the ability to refuse access to open public space. In some cases, some open public space areas require a permit for use but if the application to use the space meets all requirements then the City cannot refuse the permit. The City does not invite these rallies to take place and it is the responsibility of the organisers to ensure a rally is conducted peacefully and in accordance with the Charter.

The new garden includes a huge water feature, rock creek bed, meandering paths and places for quiet reflection for residents. With roses, lavenders, kangaroo paws, crepe myrtles, magnolias, weeping cherries and citrus trees among the delightful greenery, the garden has been a truly collaborative effort with the Bendigo aged care residents. Residents were also in-

volved in every step of the process, reviewing landscape designs, researching the best plants for the site, overseeing works from the balcony and even donating plants. Facility services manager Garry Knight said the creek was the main focus of the design. ‘’I wanted residents to be able to walk around the river bank, and have areas where they could stop and sit,” he said.

The opening event also included performances by the Bendigo South East College string quartet and the Bendigo Evergreen Brass Band. Residents wore floral outfits on the day in keeping with the Garden Party theme. ATO listens Small business owners had the chance to have conversations with the ATO recently. Twenty two businesses attended an Australian Taxation Office Community Conversation to give feedback on ATO’s services and find out what they can do for them. This event was one of many the ATO is holding with small businesses across regional Australia. It aims to showcase new products and services to help those who own a business and to find out what else can be improved. ATO Assistant Commissioner Debbie Rawlings said she appreciated the opportunity to talk to businesses one-on-one and hear about their experiences dealing with the ATO.

On the road for MND AFL legend Neale Daniher was in Bendigo this week as part of his Daniher’s Drive initiative. The event will include 50 teams taking part in a drive around Victoria, including many of the ex footballer’s family and his past football team mates and players. The event runs from October 15, raising awareness for motor neurone disease. “Every dollar raised will be used to continue the fight against the beast by backing the work of researchers,” Neale Daniher said.

Daniher’s Drive and the Cure for MND Foundation is working in the hope of one day finding a cure. Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards is backing the cause. “I was really pleased recently to be able to join the Premier at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health to raise awareness and encourage donations to the Cure for MND Foundation,” she said. “I am proud the government has contributed $150,000.

“On Friday, October 16 Neale and his team of drivers – over 50 teams now – will travel north towards Bendigo through Castlemaine. Ms Edwards said the teams will stay in Bendigo overnight. “The tickets for the Bendigo Sportsman’s Night have now sold out,” she said. “From 4.30pm there will be a goal-kicking competition where past and present AFL players will take on 10 of our country players in a David versus Goliath contest

at the Queen Elizabeth Oval. This will be a great family fun event.” Motor neurone disease is a progressive, terminal neurological disease. There is no known cure and no effective treatment for MND. “I congratulate and thank Neale Daniher and his great team of supporters and friends who are about to embark on a very important fundraising and awarenessraising adventure for the Cure for MND Foundation,” Ms Edwards said.

Security hike at stupa By LAURA HURLEY

This Sunday

October 11, 9am - 2pm KN186873/P

KN186873/P KN186873/P KN186873/P KN186873/P

Whipstick Ward Meeting Monday October 12 City of Greater Bendigo Whipstick Ward Councillors Peter Cox, Lisa Ruffell and James Williams invite all interested members of the community to attend the Whipstick Ward meeting. This forum will provide an opportunity to meet with your ward Councillors to discuss local opportunities and raise any issues.

SECURITY at the Great Stupa had been ramped up following a number thefts at the site over recent months. The Victorian government has granted the Stupa $7500 to upgrade security on the Sandhurst site in order to try and curb crime at the place of worship. Great Stupa of Universal Compassion director Ian Green said in the past the Stupa had been “too trusting”. “At the moment we’ve got very basic security here in the exhibition centre, but no security in the Great Stupa at all either inside or outside,” Mr Green said. “In the past I suppose we haven’t felt it was an importance, or we’ve been too trusting I guess. “But as we’ve had more people come in – 25,000 came in during 2014, and we’re well over that already in 2015. So with more and more people knowing about it, and you only need maybe a half a per cent of the visitors and you’re looking at maybe having a problem.” He said after consultation with police, it was decided more security was necessary to attempt to stop future crime. “Our first real robbery was during the last Festival of Light. At the end of that someone actually stole something,” Mr Green said. “Just recently we’ve had another theft of a fire fighting

FUNDING: Maree Edwards and Ian Green. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN pump which is worth $500 or $600. It’s just another cost we’re going to have to try and wear.” He said the exhibition centre and the Stupa would be monitored day and night. State member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the funding came as part of the state government’s community safety program.

“It’s unfortunate that this has been happening but the reality is that the Stupa is becoming much more well known, as a tourist destination as well as faith based place for people to come,” Ms Edwards said. “So with increase participation in these sorts of things, and increased visitation will mean that there are some people who

don’t do the right thing. “It’s about making sure the Great Stupa has the right measures in place to make sure crime and theft don’t occur out here in this beautiful and scenic place.” More than $800,000 has been spent across Victoria as part of the state government’s Community Safety Fund to try and reduce local crime.

The meeting will take place:7pm to 8.30pm Monday October 12 North Bendigo Pavilion Atkins Street, North Bendigo Everyone is encouraged and very welcome to attend. Handmade Market on Saturday THE Handmade Market is on again this weekend, with an extra element. As the event is on the same day as a planned rally they are aiming to encourage families to go to the market for a great day and support the Believe in Bendigo cause. “We have a jumping castle, barbecue, drinks, food, buskers, face painting and more than 50 local handmade and hand produced stalls ranging form sauces, jewellery , plants, clothing, furniture, garden furniture and much more,” co-organiser Jo Elwers said. “It’s all by the lake in Kangaroo Flat, sit relax and enjoy the atmosphere.” The Handmade Market takes place at the Rotary club, High Street, Kangaroo Flat, opposite Apco service station and runs from 10am to 2pm.

entertained: Colleen Hewett at Catholic College. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Colleen back at St Mary’s Singer Colleen Hewett visited Catholic College last Tuesday where she was delighted to be entertained by music students at the Barkley Street campus. “I vividly recall attending the school when I was in year eight and it was known as St Mary’s,” Ms Hewett said. “I was a bit of a wild child and had been expelled from my school in Melbourne. I was feeling pretty miserable and lost but I remember one of the nuns who was lovely. “Sister Anastasia came up to me one day and said, ’how can I make you feel happy today?’ “I looked up at the blackboard and saw a stat-

ue of St Christopher sitting high up on a ledge. He looked like he was covered in dust and I asked Sister if I could clean him. “She reached up for him and put him on my desk. She found cleaning materials and paints and brushes and as I cleaned St Christopher, I started to relax.” “In those days school was a waste of time for me. I think my best subject was art. After St Mary’s I went to high school. “I soon started singing at the local YMCA dances backed by groups such as The Lonely Ones and The Esquires. Ms Hewett was in Bendigo preparing for a

concert at Ulumbarra Theatre to be held on October 23. “I would love to see old school mates at the concert, it’s going to be a terrific night. Ms Hewett will be performing songs from her latest album, Black & White. The album which encompasses ballads, country, and blues is a personal one and traces Ms Hewett’s family history, including her experience with domestic violence. Money raised from the concert will go towards the Rotary initiative Violence Free Families which Bendigo Rotarians are supporting.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY OF BENDIGO I write on behalf of Haven; Home, Safe to the residents of Bendigo – and indeed the Victorian community – to provide a statement of fact and reinforce the amazing work of Haven; Home, Safe (which many of you know as Loddon Mallee Housing Services). We have been in existence for nearly 40 years, and over the decades, we have provided housing and support to over 200,000 individuals and families facing difficult times both here and across the wider region. In the past year alone, we have assisted more than 5,000 people in crisis in Bendigo. Haven; Home, Safe is a homelessness and housing charity, and as such, we do what we can to assist those most at risk in our community regardless of race, creed or colour. We strongly believe it is the right of a person to live safely and without harassment anywhere they wish to live. We celebrate our diverse community and ensure we are welcoming and inclusive to new residents. Unfortunately, in recent months, some of you may have seen or received claims about Haven; Home, Safe and our CEO in the press or in flyers spread around Bendigo. These flyers make assertions, which are simply untrue and unjust. In correcting this misinformation, I refer you to a series of Q&As recently published by the City of Greater Bendigo in this newspaper to which we provided a response to the mistruths. For your reference, these Q&As also appear on City of Greater Bendigo’s website and are also being circulated via other media outlets.

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, October 9, 2015

Hospital marks the day Every year on Foundation Day at St John of God Health Care staff gather together to acknowledge the long service and dedication of the hospital’s workers. At this year’s Foundation Day 14 staff members celebrated more than 20 years’ service. The occasion was marked by a lunch and distribution of awards. That staff stay with St John of God for such long periods of time is an indication of their dedication and commitment to work, according to the hospital’s Director of Mission, Denis Byrne. “Staff enjoy their work and their level of commitment is a reflection of the value of care which is part of the hospital ethos,”Mr Byrne said. Wendy Davis who has worked at St John of God for more than 30 years said she thoroughly enjoys her work. “I started here as a cleaner working every second weekend. After that I moved on to become a porter and now I work in the coffee shop,” she said. “The hospital is very appreciative of their staff and give you every opportunity to improve your skills, they’re terrific

caring. Mr Byrne said this year the hospital was supporting the Righteous Pups organisation. The hospital’s Foundation

walk and jog for alzheimers Alzheimer’s Australia is holding its first Bendigo Memory Walk and Jog on Sunday at Strathdale Park. The association is aiming to get as many people signed up for the first year in Bendigo. “It’s all about getting out and honouring someone you love who has or had dementia,” Bendigo’s Alzheimer’s Australia Simone Hoffman said. People can walk or jog and kids and pram strollers are encouraged too – it’s all about getting out and honouring someone you love who has or had dementia. There are 1686 people living with dementia in Greater Bendigo and by 2050 this will grow by 224 per cent to 5463 – alarming, and all the more reason to step out for the walk and jog. Dementia is the single greatest cause of disability in older Australians and the third leading cause of disability burden overall. For more details got to www.memorywalk.com.au

The Board and our Executive of Haven; Home, Safe are responsible and held accountable for services provided to those who are homeless, or in need of housing assistance, by the Government, Regulators, Funders, our residents, and clients, – as well as the general public – which is both fair and right. Sadly, those who have tried to denigrate our good work have been largely nameless and faceless. The Board of Haven; Home, Safe has adopted and supports the Believe in Bendigo campaign. To this end we have joined with other community, business, religious and political leaders in strong support of the Believe in Bendigo campaign. Believe in Bendigo has reinvigorated and revived what has been our city’s long, proud history of inclusion, way back to the gold rush days of the 1850s. Although it has not always been easy, we have learnt from each other’s culture and benefited in many ways through language, art and history, family and friendship, food and wine, just to name a few.

christmas raffle launched It is once again time for Christmas raffles to be entered and drawn. Last week The Rotary Club launched its annual Christmas raffle with a major prize to be won. The raffle has been held by the club for more than 20 years and is well supported by the community. Many groups across Bendigo are partners with the club and assist them with the ticket sales. Each year the club raises more than $30,000 that goes towards the community and other Rotary projects. Mayor Peter Cox launched the raffle this year and they call upon locals to buy a raffle ticket, which are $2.

The general principles of Believe in Bendigo align with those of Haven; Home, Safe to promote and welcome diversity, to reach out to all members of our community, to ensure they feel welcome and safe and to demonstrate to all residents that we are an inclusive community. As an active supporter of Believe in Bendigo, we are pleased to see the campaign has already gathered great momentum in our community and has visibly engaged members of minority groups and people from diverse backgrounds. These residents make important cultural and social contributions to our city as well as bringing significant skills and expertise. Haven; Home, Safe looks forward to continuing its work and values the continued support from our community and other key stakeholders in making a difference for those in need.

All set to ride to work Whether you ride a mountain bike, a retro or road bike, it’s time to hop on your bike and head to the Hargreaves Mall on Wednesday, October 14 for Ride 2 Work Day. Enjoy a free hot breakfast cooked by the Bendigo Sandhurst Rotary Club, prizes and entertainment by the Bendigo South East College stage band from 7.30am to 9am. Ride 2 Work Day ambassador and Bike Bendigo treasurer Robert Kretschmer said the event is an opportunity for people to try riding to work in a supportive environment and enjoy the benefits of riding for their daily commute. “Riding to work can be a normal, everyday activity, whether once a week or every day. More and more people are riding in work wear or casual clothes

and at a comfortable speed. Cycling is a great way to get some daily exercise while also getting from A to B,” Mr Kretschmer said. “To make it easy for people to take part in Ride 2 Work Day there is a poster on the City of Greater Bendigo website that shows roughly how long a cycling commute would take from various parts of Bendigo into the city centre. It also highlights the great off-road bike paths, on-road bike lanes and road underpasses that help people on bikes to skip quickly under roads and avoid traffic. La Trobe University Bendigo students are also encouraged to ride their bikes and enjoy a free breakfast at the Life Skills Cafe from 8am to 11am. slow down now school is back Drivers have been urged to slow down as kids are back at school. VicHealth’s Walk to School and VicRoads urges all drivers to be extra careful. This initiative is encouraging primary school children to walk, cycle or scoot to school for an entire month. VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting believes this is a great way to take advantage of the warmer weather while getting physical activity. “With more children set to walk and ride their bikes and scooters to school, it is necessary that drivers are extra vigilant, prepare for the unexpected and stick to the school zone speed limits,” she said. Speed limits will drop to either 40km/h or to 60km/h outside schools in the mornings, from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm in the afternoon. “Reducing the speed limit in school zones strikes the important balance between improving the safety of children and keeping traffic moving in these busy areas,” Ms Kersting said.

Mine site rehabilitation urgent Toxic ponds left by a silver mine, abandoned by its bankrupt owners in Texas, on the border of Queensland and NSW, now pose an environmental threat to local watercourses, including the Dumaresq River. A government authorities’ report estimates that as little as 40 millimetres of rain could cause the ponds to overflow. A recent media report suggested that the bond of $2 million is estimated to be worth approximately a fifth of what is needed to clean up the site. Bendigo could face a similar environmental threat because Unity Mining, having ceased mining three years ago and failed to rehabilitate its four sites in Bendigo, despite repeated requests from the community and its representatives on the Environment Review Committee, is now selling out to another mining company. The bond currently held against Unity’s failure to meet its rehabilitation responsibilities is approximately $5M, probably as inadequate as that for the Texas mine. Unless the state government takes immediate action to force rehabilitation of Unity’s Bendigo mine sites, toxic materials, including many tonnes of arsenic and other dangerous residues will be left on site and taxpayers will be left to clean up the mess or face continuing health and environmental risks. Stop the porkies It’s time to set the record straight. Last week’s tragic mass murder in the United States has prompted anti-gun lobby group, Gun Control Australia, to make public various falsehoods about Australia’s firearms laws. Appearing on the Today Show on Saturday, Gun Control Australia director Samantha Lee claimed that the “well-financed, well-connected gun lobby here in Australia has successfully eroded our gun laws”. It’s time for Gun Control Australia to stop using the media as a platform to spread distortions, murky half-truths and more propaganda, and start being accountable. Ms Lee said “Australia did some great work back in 1996 after the Port Arthur Massacre and we did have very strong laws…” Since 1996, many of the laws have stayed the same, while some have become

more stringent. Here are the facts. In 1996 the Commonwealth created the National Firearms Agreement (NFA) and Victoria established its own Firearms Act 1996. Since then, rather than reduce restrictions on firearms ownership, the Commonwealth introduced two new agreements. The National Firearms Trafficking Policy Agreement (2002) was introduced to control the illegal trade of firearms in Australia. The National Handgun Control Agreement (2002) was aimed at restricting the availability and use of handguns. Ms Lee, herself, said Australia had strong laws after 1996 and, as the above shows, the same laws remain in place. So, Gun Control Australia, it’s time to stop painting our law-abiding, licensed firearms-owners as villains. Livestock farmers who put down injured or sick animals on their own properties, croppers who protect their livelihood against pest animals, people who put fresh meat on the table, the Australian Olympic Shooting Team and people who enjoy going to a range for target or clay shooting are not the enemy. They are responsible people – doctors, electricians, teachers, small-business owners, bookkeepers, parents and pensioners, who just want a fair go. Jack Wegman, CEO Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (Victoria)

Crash, bang, wallop Tony Abbott said he didn’t trust Malcolm Turnbull. Now there is a revelation, but at last we have an adult in charge, and boy has he had a spring clean out. The former PM was given another opportunity to improve his performance, but all that did was send the Coalition’s two party preferred vote sinking to the bottom of Lake Burley Griffin, ultimately convincing 54 of his colleagues to grab a Turnbull life jacket and jump overboard. Nope, no wrecking or sniping, yep, another broken promise. So its London to a brick on, Tony will shirt front somebody to have another crack at the top job, you bet I will. Now, Barnaby Joyce is trying to move Warren Truss out the door as well. Ye gods, Barnaby Joyce Deputy Prime Minister? You have got to be kidding.

Allbetz are off on Eric’s career, smoking Joe Hockey is replacing bomber Beasley as High Commissioner to the US, matching wits with the Donald Trumper of all reputations, and Marise has inflicted the ultimate Payne on former defence minister Kevin Andrews, who now has no opportunity to visit Bendigo’s defence apparel section and Thales on the same day, or announce the new defence contract. Our health minister has advised us that Medicare costs are rising faster than Usain Bolt can run, but the AMA have come out angrily rejecting the assertion that procedures are over used. If, as the government indicates, there are procedures listed not considered necessary, why were they there in the first place. And just who is going to be the judge of that? Could this be the future. Doctor to patient, sorry mate, can’t give you a new knee, buy a gopher. What next, all pedestrians required to wear crash helmets for their own safety. How much longer can governments keep bowing to powerful lobbyists, and giving taxpayers money to already wealthy people, when the already wealthy, including large corporations, fund a political party, leaving the public on the receiving end of decisions that directly affect them, but have no say. Governments have been talking about the ageing population and

the consequences for the health budget for two decades. This has not just happened overnight. Health and education have always had the public’s vote as their top priorities. Our neighbour across the Tasman, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, has delivered his own version of the political underarm ball, by saying that when the Australian Prime Minister rings and says he is coming in future, he will delay the allocation of names for the reception, until he is sure of who is going to turn up. Steady on bro, anyway, we are going for six leaders in six years at next year’s Federal election. Whose side are you on? There are difficult times ahead, with the near future telling us if anything will be any different from the past. We can only live in hope. Ken Price, Eaglehawk

Scare campaign on guns I call on Labor to allow the National Firearms Agreement review to take place without stirring up unnecessary hysteria. I dismiss calls by Labor’s justice spokeperson, Graham Perrett, to ban the importation of a new Adler lever-action firearm that meets current requirements. Labor’s concerns that this legal

firearm will be available to licensed recreational shooters is an absolute insult to the estimated 800,000 owners who respect and obey the law. There is nothing new to the latest five-round version in that it meets current requirements. A 12-month ban on an eightround Adler was in place while the NFA review took place, in response to the Martin Place siege. Labor’s call for gun laws to be reviewed is precisely what is taking place involving both an industry reference group and the firearms and weapons policy working group. Labor should resist the urge for lecture on an issue without the facts. A senate inquiry report found that only four hundredths of one per cent of all registered guns in Australia were stolen and only five per cent of those were used to commit a crime. Recreational shooting contributes $1 billion to the national economy not including the many social and environmental benefits. This is just another of Bill Shorten’s scare campaigns. It shows just how out of touch Labor is with the average Australian by first threatening job opportunities in its protest to the China-Australia free trade agreement, and now impacting on people’s recreational time. Bendigo is better THIS weekend, Bendigo will once again provide the backdrop to opposing groups who either do or do not believe the city should have its first mosque. It would be our wish, and that of many other local residents, once again, that the two opposing groups actually stayed away from Bendigo and did not come here to disrupt our beautiful city and the lifestyle attractions we are so blessed to enjoy. The various rallies will achieve nothing, or a least they will achieve nothing positive for Bendigo. And while people may well have a right to protest and to voice their opinions, there’s simply no excuse for some of the antics this city has experienced in recent times. It must again be acknowledged, that this is not just outsiders muscling in on Bendigo. There is a very vocal group of local opponents to Bendigo’s first

mosque, even if they do appear to have distanced themselves from some of the more infamous outside groups who have perpetuated messages of misinformation, false truths and vilification. The Believe in Bendigo campaign has harnessed the goodwill of one group of proud locals, but there are many, many more locals who just want Bendigo to be. They want Bendigo to be the city they love and enjoy. They want Bendigo to be a great place to work and to play. They want Bendigo to be a great place to enjoy the restaurants, the hotels and coffee shops. They want Bendigo to be a place where they can raise their kids in safety and comfort. They want Bendigo to be a place where they can enjoy the art gallery, or the theatre. Like many of us, they look to communities like Mildura and

Shepparton, where there seems to be none of the negativity and social disruption that has been attributed to the proposed Bendigo mosque, should it be built. People this paper have spoke to in these other communities are looking on with shock and disbelief at some of what has occurred here in recent times. Not just at how raw and crude it has been, but how unrealistic it is as well. It’s not an unfair or unrealistic question to ask what the proponents of some of the disgraceful antics that have been employed by people on both sides of this issue, could have ever possibly hoped to achieve. Specifically, there’s no excuse for that stupid, disgusting ‘mock beheading’ of last weekend, or for burning an Australian flag, or for causing chaos and disrupting a council meeting. Ever.

pk Hawkei hits the target with Peter Kennedy

THERE’S a lot to like around Bendigo at the moment as the city continues to box above its weight on the state, national and global stage. With major announcements falling out of the inbox in recent times like never before, the city is moving at a pace and energy that is the envy of many other regional centres. Our industry, education, sporting and cultural facilities have all enjoyed major announcements either in recent times, or in the case of the Bendigo Art Gallery, later today, that set this city apart from others, and should give all of us just that little bit extra to be proud of. There’s an old saying that says “success has many fathers”, and in the case of the Hawkei, it’s undoubtedly true. Politicians of all political persuasions have beaten the drum for Bendigo’s case, and to be more specific, Thales, and its quest to have the incredible Hawkei armoured vehicle adopted by our military as the first step towards even more sales.

While in more recent times, our elected state and federal representatives including current Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, have flown the flag for the Bushmaster and the Hawkei program, it would be remiss of Bendigo to not acknowledge the efforts of former MP Steve Gibbons. Now with the help of some of the festival’s best‐loved artists, the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival will celebrate King’s life and music with an exclusive tribute concert at The Shamrock Hotel’s Federation Room on Friday, November 6. Concert organiser and musician, Josh Owen, said looking back on King’s music was like studying a musical genealogy. “BB King was one of those incredible people who rose out of poverty to take blues to the world, ending up as an inspiration to millions,” Owen said. “Australia is a country built on Rock. Many artists both locally and internationally have drawn inspiration from his work, including AC/DC, Cold Chisel, The Rolling Stones, Who, Cream and Led Lepplin to name a few. “You can chase these family trees for days but in the end the glorious rock guitar‐sound all traces back to the blues and artists like BB King.” Featuring Geoff Achison, Josh

HOUSANDS of Heathcote wine fans will descend on the central Victoria town this weekend for the annual wine and food festival. With a forecast for idyllic spring weather each day, organisers from Heathcote Winegrowers’ Association preparing for another bumper celebration at the Heathcote Showgrounds. “Over 14 years, our festival has grown from a courtyard event to a major weekend celebration involving more than 40 local wineries,” festival committee chairman Phil Meehan said. “The growth and popularity of our festival each year matches the rising prominence in popularity of Heathcote wines at home and overseas. “It’s a unique festival showcasing the passion and achievement of our local wine industry and matching those exciting wines with regional produce.” One of Australia’s foremost wine advocates Rob Hicks will present special tasting sessions and masterclasses each day of the festival. He says the festival feature events will involve leading Heathcote winemakers talking about qualities and success of their wines.

“I’ve chosen to showcase the leading wines from this year’s Heathcote Wine Show – every wine we feature awarded a trophy or gold medal by some of the best judges in the country,” Rob said. “These are the top wines from an outstanding and exciting region that demonstrate the success and quality that is now synonymous with Heathcote.” Mr Meehan said special buses would run from Melbourne and Bendigo for festival patrons. “We expect to match last year’s crowd numbers and share the passion for our fine regional wine and foods in more than 70 marquees at the showgrounds,” he said. “We have expanded the children’s activity space at the festival and booked additional shade marquees that will again create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for families and wine lovers arriving at the festival. “We’re a major regional event proud to share the achievements of winemakers and food producer, achievements that reflect well on Bendigo and central Victoria.” The festival is supported by Tourism Victoria and the City of Greater Bendigo.

MATT EMOND

Friends like us... I

N a friendship that has spanned more than 25 years, three school friends come together to bring theatre to life in a Bendigo premiere. Ben Pengally, Matt Emond and Margaret Hickey went their separate ways after finishing Year 12 at Catholic College Bendigo but their paths have converged in a manner which none of them foresaw in their teenage years. Bendigo theatre director Matt Emond, fresh from his success with Mary Poppins, will bring award winning playwright and published author Margaret Hickey’s new play, Us to life in the Old Fire Station theatre tonight and Saturday. Us is a series of six linked monologues which celebrate the small moments in life and highlight the joys that come with being ordinary. It is humorous play largely focussed on rural and regional themes. Hickey’s work has been praised by leading playwright David Williamson and has been given four stars from the Guardian newspaper. Creative producer and former Sydney publisher Rosie Koop is thrilled to be working with three friends. “I have been producing Marg’s work for over three years now, and we are always on the lookout for new and exciting directors,” Koop said. “When I asked Marg if she had heard of Matt Emond, she said that he was a friend of hers from their school days. The symmetry between them in our first meeting was wonderful and I was so happy to bring Matt on board.” Matt was initially approached by Rosie to direct the Melbourne season of Us, which will run at an already sold out La Mama theatre, Carlton in mid-October but he immediately suggested a Bendigo season first. “It seemed the right thing to do. Marg and I both come from Bendigo and her work has been performed in New York, Melbourne and rural Victoria – but never in her home town. We all feel strongly about producing theatre in regional towns and so it just made sense,” Emond said. The premiere of Us is at the Old Fire Station tonight and Saturday. Tickets can be bought from The Capital on 5434 6100 or online at www. thecapital.com.au.

OTHING’S guaranteed to get a girl redcarpet-ready quite as quickly as moving house. No need for gym visits, personal trainers or hours spent hauling car tyres around at bootcamp; more efficient than any manufactured workout is the seemingly endless packcarry-unpack-and-repeat routine of lugging cardboard boxes, with bonus points if the new premises includes several flights of stairs. When the world fell in love with Michelle Obama’s magnificently toned arms in 2008, the First Couple was newly settled in DC. Coincidence? In Australia, September is, purely and simply, Brownlow season. Forget the grand final – as far as fashionistas are concerned that’s little more than a five-day-late after-party. For a journalist whose days are spent sitting deskbound, the prospect of mixing it in a crowd of glamazon wives and girlfriends is downright terrifying. (Imagine the horror of being caught by a photographer’s lens looking like a Hobbit beside the dropdead-gorgeous Megan Gale?) So, this year, with a night at the planet’s most scrutinised vote-count looming, coupled with a fortuitous home relocation, a serious dose of nipping and tucking was planned. First came sourcing a suitably elegant formal gown (done online at 3am, sitting propped up in bed scouting for something not likely to appear simultaneously on the ten-foottall Ms Gale), then followed the wait as it was custom-stitched and shipped to Melbourne.

The fitting went smoothly, despite a tsunami of surplus fabric obscuring most of the boutique floor – it seemed the couturier had intended it for a supermodel after all rather than someone standing five-foot-two. Finally, after spending the entire lead-up month on a strictly zero-carb diet, all the while sweating it out mid-move, I could face a fulllength mirror. However, there remained the challenge of glow-in-the-dark-pasty skin. Enter: the spraytan. The result was perfect – well, almost. Forty-eight hours out from the big date with the snaparazzi, both my palms and the tops of my fingers decided to stain themselves several shades between walnut and black. No amount of scrubbing with the usual suspects – lemon juice, a loofah, Solvol soap –

On Thursday at 8pm the evening concert features the most popular of Mozart’s 41 symphonies, the intensely emotional Symphony No.40. Opening with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Mozart’s final Violin Concerto. MSO managing director, André Gremillet, said the MSO is committed to taking outstanding symphonic music to regional communities. “Regional tours are important to the

MSO’s vision and the Orchestra is committed to ensuring orchestral music is accessible to all Victorians. This tour is an opportunity for communities to enjoy the wonderful sounds of the MSO in local spaces,” Gremillet said. As part of the MSO’s education program, the orchestra will present two primary school concerts on Friday, October 16.

would budge this, although a not-insignificant amount of delicate skin did give way. In the end it was a five-minute soaking in neat White King that did the job. On the day itself there was a manicure (I might well have been the only Brownlow gal having her French tips done in a suburban shopping centre) and 90 minutes of combined hair and makeup styling. Was it worth it? Ab-so-lute-ly. With no cringeworthy incidents of personal trippage, slippage or spillage to report, this Cinderella’s evening passed in a blur of flashing lights, clearly enunciated names and numbers and clinking raised glasses. Oh, to be one of the chosen few to whom a gilt-edged Brownlow invitation is delivered every year.

A singing licensee I

HAVE previously mentioned the fact that the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders were a diverse and talented group, all the members coming from the more comfortable side of 19th century Bendigo. Likewise with my next personality, who is to a large extent still a bit of a mystery, his name was William Pallet. The Pallet name was well known in early Bendigo, there was a father and son combination both called George who were builders and contractors. I am uncertain if these two, William and George were related? William Pallet had a really accomplished rich tenor voice, as stated by one critic. He was very charitably minded, willingly making himself available for any worthwhile fund raising cause. Naturally he featured regularly with the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders in their efforts to ameliorate suffering in the community through their munificent contributions collected at their performances. The first hotel which Mr Pallet held a licence for was the Live and Let Live Hotel, located in High Street, from all accounts on the north side. The hotel was between Short and Forest streets, I

had found his application for the licence late in 1880, the Live and Let Live Hotel was recorded as existing in 1872. From there he moved to the Royal Hotel, of which there were a number sharing the same name. The Royal Hotel that Mr Pallet became the licensee of was at 10 Forest Street, which was on the eastern side. This hotel held one of the earliest licences on the Bendigo goldfield, first commencing in 1854. The building has been reconstructed a number of times, a Mrs Wallace was I believe the last licensee of the hotel, which closed in 1916. Mr Pallet was most likely simultaneously the licensee of both the hotels mentioned, as in 1879 he advertised some steam and farm machinery for sale and he gave the Forest Street address. He was also a very ecumenical type of fellow as he participated regularly in fund raising events for a variety of religious denominations. For example, in late 1877 his vocal talents were used during the anniversary service at St Luke’s Church of England at White Hills, he sang with great feeling Comfort Ye My People. Some evenings later he was on the bill to sing at the

Eaglehawk Church of England, on this occasion he sang a duet with Mrs Ellis, The Sailor Sighs, later in the evening he was part of a trio with Miss I Pearson and Mr Kilburn. At an Easter service celebrating the “glorious resurrection of our Lord”, there were three soloists Mrs A J Smith, Mr Pallet and another at All Saints, just up the hill from his hotel. In June 1877 Mr Pallet took part in a Service of Sacred Song at the Baptist Church in White Hills. The proceeds of that evening was destined to aid the Bendigo Hospital. Mr W McKinnon from Castlemaine was the organist. Mr Pallet sang two anthems, Incline Thine Ear and Awake Put On Thy Strength. At the West Sandhurst Presbyterian Church anniversary soiree concert Mr Pallet sang a most difficult song, The Voice of My Love, according to a music critic it was sung with fine expression. In conjunction with a number of other gentlemen, they did a humming accompaniment for Mrs A J Smith, a well known soprano in 1886. On this occasion it was for the Juvenile and Industrial Exhibition. A highly respected

DIVERSE: William Pallet Jewish business man Sina (Simon) Max had a farewell at the Imperial Hotel in May 1887, before he moved to Melbourne to advance his business interests. Mr Pallet was among a number of gentlemen to give of their best to Max who himself had been a great supporter of charities in this city. A fossicker called Brunnen in the late 1860s lost his eyesight while using explosives in the northern part of the field in the Whipstick. Mr Brunnen had managed to provide for his family despite his handicap, although in older age in 1897 he was unable to provide any more. A benefit fund had been started for the Brunnens with many miners contributing as generously as they could. A final meeting of the committee of the fund was held at Pallet’s Royal Hotel, more than £110 was able to be handed over.

Now recruiting Gold strike for lucky few keen volunteers

By NICK ATYEO

RISING water temperatures should see increased piscatorial activity from both fish and anglers alike as summer approaches. With Lake Eppalock at less than 40 per cent capacity there should still be plenty of water for those intent on fishing close to home into the new year. Reports indicate that the redfin are starting to move but anglers should be prepared to move around to find the larger fish. It shouldn’t be long before golden perch catches become more prolific too. Meanwhile reports are filtering through of reasonable catches of redfin at Waranga Basin, which hopefully will fire up further once the irrigation season gathers momentum and water levels increase. Pental Island just east of Swan Hill was the destination for around 20 anglers of the Bendigo Legion Angling Club last month. This was new water for many and looked ideal habitat for a range of native fish Unfortunately a dropping water level made fishing difficult with only eight legal yellow belly troubling the club statistician.

WINNERS: Rob Tamblyn and Jayden Rice both enjoyed success at Pental Island. Trolling proved ineffectual with no fish landed on lures despite water clarity not being excessively murky. Success was encountered by a few lucky anglers who were prepared to work the structure with a range of baits. Rob Tambyln and myself spent a futile Saturday savouring the tranquility, passively soaking a variety of baits for a couple of halfhearted enquiries, before deciding a different approach was needed. An actively worked bait beside

vertical timber worked a treat with us both landing golden perch at two of the first three snags we tried the following morning. Rob’s 47 centimetre golden perch saw him take out the prize for the largest fish while Jayden Rice took out the price for the biggest creel with a 40cm and 44cm fish, also coming from a more active bait presentation. Despite the overall disappointing result most members agreed a return visit may well be worthwhile.

BECOME a Research Angler and help important fisheries research at Barkers Creek Reservoir in Harcourt. If you enjoy fishing, why not become a Research Angler? You’ll be contributing directly to research and helping to ensure there will be plenty of fish for you, your kids and grandkids to catch. You don’t need to be a scientist to take part – just an enthusiastic angler. Fisheries Victoria has awarded funding to the Bendigo and District Fly Fishing Club to conduct research into the redevelopment of the trout fishery at Barkers Creek Reservoir in Harcourt. Scientific analysis of the fishery will be conducted by the Arthur Rylah Institute for environmental research and you can help too. You don’t have to be a fly fisher, we need anglers of all varieties to help collect enough data to ensure fish and their habitats are being well managed. By volunteering to become a research angler you will be issued

Birthday celebrations continue

ON TARGET: Matt Smith (left) of Smiths Outdoors.

BENDIGO’S own Smiths Outdoors turns one this month and owner Matt Smith says he’s looking forward to the year ahead. “We’ve got some fantastic clients and we’ve had a lot of support from the shooting community in our first year. We’ll be looking to repay that by offering the best service in the business on the world’s best brands,” Matt said. Matt says Bendigo is home to many shooters who travel across the state to participate in competitions, feral animal management, hunting and more. “In our region we have men and women shooting clay targets at field and game, protecting our environment against pigs, rabbits and foxes, competing on skeet and target ranges and working on the land,” he said. Outdoors shooters support jobs in manufacturing, retail sales and outdoor services, including safety equipment,

fuel, accommodation, camping and hunting equipment, and restaurants and cafes. The Bendigo region also hosts a number of specialist businesses including private game bird farms, private hunting tour operators, and corporate event companies. “The contribution our region’s shooters make in economic, environmental, cultural and recreational terms is huge and we’re really happy to be part of something that brings so many people together,” Matt said. Smiths Outdoors will be celebrating its first birthday for the whole of October. A purchase more than $100 puts you in the draw to win prizes from the $4000 pool, thanks to Beretta Australia and Nioa. Visit the team at 13C Roanoak Court, East Bendigo or www.smithsoutdoors.com.au

with a log book to record details of your visits and catches at Barkers Creek Reservoir. This helps to monitor fish abundance and diversity, and other indicators of changes in environmental conditions. Data collected will be used by researchers from the Arthur Rylah Institute to complement scientific research and will have a direct impact upon future fish stocking. Get involved in this grass-roots community project and become a Research Angler by emailing bendigodistrictflyfishers@gmail. com or contacting Bendigo and District Fly Fishing Club at www. bdffc.weebly.com

NE of the intriguing aspects of this versatile business, Custom Shade Solutions, is personalised, metal artwork. The artwork can be functional such as the popular, rusted-metal fire-pit; or alternatively the artwork can be decorative, providing life and fun to your outdoor experience. The material used is steel which can be treated to retain its original tone or it can be designed to give a lovely, rich, rusted colour. The dimensions are also variable and can go up to one and half metres by three metres in size. Other examples of the metal artwork include screens which can hide a particular part of your garden. They can also make small missing parts which might be needed to connect existing constructions. Alternatively you might want a name or a sign that reflects your interests or business. HE count down is on. There are a few weeks to go to summer, but still plenty of time to lose weight and start to get fit. And we all know losing those extra kilos will also make us feel much more cool and comfortable over the hot summer months. The basic formula for losing weight is to eat less and exercise more and this is where Mr Rental can help you. There is no need to join a gym. Mr Rental has equipment that will suit all your needs. Equipment that you can use when it is convenient for you, not the gym. Mr Rental has low impact cross-trainers and exercise bikes. You can either manually adjust the bikes or use computer controlled bikes that

program-in hills and valleys to keep your ride interesting. All this equipment is well maintained and quiet so you can still watch TV while you work out. Of course Mr Rental also has treadmills that suit all speeds and sizes of people. From a basic walker that can go as slow as you like, right up to a runner that will carry 125kg and go at 16km/h. While that might not sound fast, compared to a car at 16km/h you would travel more than 5km in 20 minutes. So if you want to stay fit for summer then give Daryl a ring at Mr Rental on 5443 5222 or 1800 880 778 or call in to 80b Garsed Street, Bendigo.

If Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He will also give life to the mortal bodies through His spirit.

ADOPT-A-PET OPT A Spayed Female, 9 months

Tetra

og

American Bulld

This lovely young lady is full of life and love. Tetra is very willing to please and will always be happy to hang out with the family and just love life to her fullest. Her cheeky facial expressions will warm your heart and make you have a few lol moments I’m sure. Regular exercise, training and companionship will see this girl blossom into a beautiful young lady.

If you’re looking for a cat who is affectionate and loving, then Sheba is the cat for you.She is a dainty young lady who loves to sleep her day away and would have cuddles all day if she could. Although she is a short haired cat, she does malt a lot so would need regular grooming to keep this under control.Sheba is social with other cat’s, loves kids and will make a wonderful companion for the right person. Come in and have a cuddle….. I know you’ll fall in love.

Team steps up training

POSITIVE: Spirit coach Simon Pritchard.

Spirit still in the game From Page 40 Kerryn Harrington returns from Adelaide to bring some familiarity among the newcomers for this year, but big adjustments have to be made, and not just by the fresh faces among the Spirit camp. Mainstays Jane Chalmers, Andrea and Kelly Wilson, Belinda Snell, Gabe Richards, Kelsey Griffin and Heather Oliver have had just as hard a time, if not perhaps more so, than the team’s debutants-to-be. “The new girls have been great, it is some of the older players who have probably had the hardest time with the adjustment,” Pritchard said. “All human beings are reticent to change, and so it’s taken a little bit for the older players but they are now on board with them and are having some freedom within them.” An almost full-strength Bendigo takes on the newly-formed South East Queensland Stars on Friday night in Brisbane before travelling to Townsville to tackle the reigning champs on Saturday. Gabe Richards may play limited minutes in the team’s opener, while Sarah McAppion will be limited with an ongoing injury niggle. Both teams present completely different matchups, and the upstart Stars are somewhat of an unknown around the league. “We’re underdone, but so is everyone. It is what it is. Being their first home game they will be hyped and they are a bit of an unknown to most people,” Pritchard said. “I have seen a bit of tape on them, they play exciting basketball. We need to contain them to a manageable score, and if we win our matchup with Rachel Jarry and the rebounding battle I think we can do that. “On Saturday we can go into Townsville and have a crack. We have absolutely nothing to lose and no expectation of winning. “If we can go in carefree and play selflessly, I think we can cause an upset, but they will be very tough.” As for the long-term goals of the team, Pritchard was forthright in his belief that Bendigo can again challenge for a championship. “To be completely honest, we’re here to win, we’re were to win a championship,” he said.

A LA TROBE UNIVERSITY researcher is embracing world leading player-tracking technology in a bid to help the Bendigo Spirit gain a competitive edge. The Spirit’s season starts today, but exercise and sports physiology PhD candidate Craig Staunton was recently appointed as the team’s strength and conditioning coach, and is already hard at work collecting and analysing data from accelerometers. “Accelerometers are small, lightweight tracking devices worn by players during training sessions and matches,” Staunton said. “They allow us to calculate the number of sudden changes in movement of a player and, importantly, measure how intensive they are. “Sudden changes in movement may fatigue the body much faster than running at a constant speed. By measuring the intensity of a player’s jumping, sprinting and shuffling from side to side, we can calculate an athlete’s training load.” The data is analysed and presented to coaching staff, who use it to help make decisions on how hard a player trains each week. “Monitoring player’s training can help prevent injury and ensure optimal levels of performance throughout a game or season,” he said. “Accelerometers have given the Spirit an extensive baseline of data for each player. This could give the girls the edge to take that final step and win this season’s championship.” Staunton began collaborating with the Spirit last season and was recently offered a coaching role. Bendigo Spirit general manager Adam Tarr said the appointment was made possible through a partnership between the team and the university. “It has been a win-win situation for both parties which I hope can continue long into the future,” he said. “We’re excited to have such a talented and energetic PhD student in Craig Staunton involved with our program for the 2015/16 WNBL season.

FITTED OUT: Kelsey Griffin goes through her paces with Craig Staunton. “Craig brings a high level of professionalism to our program and has done an outstanding job since joining the Bendigo Bank Spirit.”

Staunton also collaborates with soccer’s Melbourne City youth squad and the Bendigo Braves, which are all sponsored by La Trobe University.

Netball talent on show at state titles THIS weekend’s Netball Victoria state titles will showcase the best players from 19 regions across Victoria who will compete in 15/Under, 17/Under, Open and All Abilities netball divisions. To be held in Bendigo at the Golden City Netball Association courts, the weekend competition not only brings quality players, coaches and umpires from all areas across the state but the event is also acknowledged as an invaluable development tool and promotes a structured pathway for those playing netball in Victoria. This year’s titles are also a celebration

of 30 years of competition history. Locally, the 11-player North Central squad is primed to put in a strong showing on the Bendigo courts, in what is expected to be a highly competitive and enthralling competition. North Central will be led by Strathfieldsaye’s Brianna Dalrymple-Monro. Two Bays, which comprises netball associations on the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs, are keen to defend their title, while traditional rivals Ballarat are also expected to provide stiff competition.

More than 50 teams, representing 16 regions, will contest the titles, which are also expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, with thousands of visitors expected in town to compete, officiate or watch the championships unfold. North Central open squad is: Brianna Dalrymple-Monro, Rebecca Smith (North Bendigo), Ashley Bradley, Zoe Davies, Chelsea Sartori, Rachel Mackenzie (Kangaroo Flat), Olivia McEvoy (Colbinabbin), Jodie Lake (Leitchville-Gunbower), Ashley Ryan (Golden Square) Emily Atkinson (Echuca) and Brooke Bolton (Sandhurst).

Dellavadova in star run BASKETBALL star Matthew Dellavedova has capped a sensational basketball season with the Cleveland Cavaliers by being named the Bendigo Weekly Prime 7 backed Sports Star of the Month for June. Maryborough born Dellavedova is a former Bendigo Braves player who during the American NBA season helped propel the Cavs into the finals of the world’s most elite basketball competition where he again starred, despite being part of a team that eventually lost the series to the highly fancied Golden State Warriors. The unassuming Dellavedova’s tenacity and intense competitive nature on court earned him the respect and support of basketball legends including the game’s highest profile player – LeBron James and fellow NBA great Charles Barkley. He scored an inspirational playoff career-high 20 points, to help the Cavs take the pivotal third game of the NBA final series before the Golden State regrouped to take the series. His never say die attitude and willingness to put himself on the line against much bigger and more fancied opponents won the respect and admiration of sporting fans across the globe. Cricket club adds hope THE Hope Assistance Local Tradies program has teamed up with Harcourt Cricket Club to promote mental health awareness. HALT is supported by Bendigo Community Health Services to run Save Your Bacon breakfasts to raise awareness in the tradie community about mental health issues and support services. A Harcourt Cricket Club invitation to run a Save Your Bacon mental health awareness night led to HALT founder Jeremy Forbes stepping into the cricket arena for the first time as part of Mental Health Week 2015. Harcourt Cricket Club spokesman Steve Carroll said local stalwart Tammy Simmons, whose son plays cricket, was motivated to organise a men’s mental health event after the tragic murder of Melbourne boy Luke Batty after a cricket training session in Tyabb. “Mental health is an important message for everyone,’’ he said. “Camaraderie exists in clubs but accessing support is not always easy or straightforward and the talk from HALT might explain that process and make it easier. “Sometimes there is a certain stigma around mental health issues and we want to make it OK

SAVING BACON: Jeremy Forbes. to talk about this stuff. “We’d love other clubs to pick up the initiative and run a similar event.” Mr Forbes welcomed Harcourt Cricket Club’s initiative and urged other sporting clubs to follow the lead. “Life can be physically, mentally and financially challenging and people need to know where and who they can turn to during tough times to gain the assistance needed to help themselves and their mates,” Mr Forbes said. “We have had great success

A new look Spirit

By JOEL PETERSON

AMID an offseason of change for the Bendigo Spirit, one thing has not wavered. The club has embraced a new coach, new players and a new off-court vision, but has lost no desire to win a third Women’s National Basketball League championship. In previous years you could pencil the Spirit in for the finals each season. They were an immovable finals fixture for three years, winning two titles before a runners-up finish last season. Now they are among the growing pack hunting Townsville, one of two opponents this weekend as Bendigo hits the road for the always difficult Queensland away double to start the 2015/16 campaign. Plenty are willing to write the Spirit off this season, but new coach Simon Pritchard is far removed from that crowd. Pritchard, a long-time WNBL assistant at Adelaide and Canberra, has put his squad through its paces in preseason games and training, and

said this week that the club’s first goal for the season proper is as simple as they come. “My first goal was to get through pre-season training without an injury, which we have done for the most part,” he said. “That was the first goal, our next goal is getting a win against South East Queensland on Friday. “That’s our focus at the moment, playing South East Queensland on Friday night, we are putting all our energy as a group into that.” With the removal of the club’s old guard comes new blood, and a more inexperienced Spirit lineup. Out go championshipwinning players Maddie Garrick, Sara Blicavs, Tessa Lavey and the retired Chelsea Aubry, in come Sarah McAppion, Molly Matthews, Joy Burke, Ebony Rolfe and Ashleigh Spencer. That group, McAppion aside, has played a grand total of exactly 0 games in the league. Continued Page 38
