UPSET: Ravenswood homestead owner Corey Scoble is concerned at the removal of so many trees. RIGHT: The eagle’s nest.

By PETER KENNEDY

THE owner of one of central Victoria’s most historic properties has hit out at VicRoads over the planned removal of more than 1800 trees to allow the development of a new roundabout and interchange at Ravenswood. Corey Scoble bought the historic Ravenswood homestead three months ago with the knowledge that about 1000 trees were due to be removed from roadside reserves and

nearby properties, including his own, as part of the $86 million joint state and federally funded project. Yesterday, a frustrated Mr Scoble said he was concerned as to how the initial estimates of 1000 trees needing to be removed had blown out to almost double the

original figure. “The 1000 trees were fine, it’s the bit now where you start thinking about what they are doing and how they probably could have saved a lot of those trees by putting power underground – it is a bushfire area,” he said.

Plan ahead for final care – Page 3

Mr Scoble said some of the trees scheduled to be cut down were more than 500 years old and that this had caused a great deal of distress and concern in the community. “My concerns are about a lot of the big trees we are losing for the sake of power lines and probably the

number of trees that will go.” Mr Scoble also revealed a pair of eagles had established a nest in a tree set to be removed, and the nest contained a fledgling that only recently hatched. ‘‘My concern is where are those eagles going to go? Where will all the birdlife go once all those trees are gone?” The Weekly understands the tree will not be removed until the fledgling leaves the nest. Continued Page 7

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Prime time AGENTS Tweed Sutherland First National report a parcel of prime residential land with significant development opportunity was passed in at auction this week. Principal Craig Tweed put the large 7.4 hectare site at 2 Alder Street, Golden Square under the hammer on Wednesday in the searing heat before a crowd of interested onlookers that included some of the city’s leading local developers. The site, described as one of the best opportunities for subdivision in Greater Bendigo, offers multi-street frontage, residential zoning and a prime location just four kilometres from the CBD. The property is owned by Coliban Water, and was once the site of the corporation’s headquarters. Documentation included with other information on the Alder Street site included plans for up to 93 lots, ranging in size from just over 300 square metres to two lots larger than 800 square metres. The property was passed in on a vendor’s bid of $2.85 million. Mr Tweed yesterday confirmed the property was still on the market, with a reserve price in the mid-$3m price range. AUSTRALIAN Bureau of Statistics housing finance figures released this month show lending to investors dropped in September while lending to owner occupiers posted modest growth. The Housing Industry Asso-

ciation said after reaching a peak of $13.1 billion in April this year, the aggregate value of lending to investors purchasing established homes has been tracking along at around $12.5b per month. “Latest result shows lending to investors fell by 7.8 per cent to $11.7b in September, making it the lowest level of investor lending in more than a year,” HIA economist, Geordan Murray, said. “As the major lenders have implemented changes to their mortgage lending practices in response to APRA’s guidance late last year, the risk posed by a spell of procyclical growth in property prices and investor lending appears to have moderated. “The total number of loans (seasonally adjusted) to owner occupiers, excluding refinancing of established dwellings, increased by a modest 0.7 per cent in the month to a level 6.8 per cent higher than a year ago. “After posting very modest growth in the previous month, the number of loans to owner occupiers purchasing or constructing new homes increased by 3 per cent in September 2015, but was still 3.8 per cent lower than 12 months earlier. “A widening in the interest rate margin between investor loans and owner occupier loans should see growth in the owner occupier market outperform the investor market over the months ahead.”

PASSED IN: But prime land is still for sale. New South Wales was the only state to record more loans to owner occupiers purchasing or constructing new homes in the September 2015 quarter compared with a year earlier, with an increase of 7.6 per cent. In Victoria, figures were down by 2.8 per cent, Queensland by 10.9 per cent, South Australia by 4.7 per cent, Western Australia by 19.5 per cent, Tasmania by 30.5 per cent, the Northern Territory by 18.8 per cent, and the Australian Capital Territory by 14.1 per cent. hawk and Heathcote landfills this weekend. City of Greater Bendigo director of presentation and assets Darren Fuzzard said this will be the final free green waste disposal weekend for 2015. “The previous free green waste disposal weekend in October resulted in almost 1400 vehicles dropping off a total of 184.22 tonnes of green waste at the landfill sites,” he said. “We are having an overwhelming response to the free green waste disposal weekends and residents are encouraged to take advantage of this free opportunity.” The Eaglehawk Landfill is open 8am to 4.30pm and Heathcote Landfill is open 8am to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday.

Plan now for final care Patients urged to make last wishes known

A LOCAL hospice nurse has called for earlier end of life planning for terminally ill patients. Inpatient nurse Patricia Schajermann said many patients and their families often put off discussing end of life care until it is too late. “If people are linked into palliative care earlier, we can get them to work out an end of life program, and that can be two or three years out,” Ms Schajermann said. “If people get in there earlier and start thinking about it they can actually work out what they want out life, and they might not up end up in emergency with staff doing a whole heap of resuscitation stuff they don’t want.” She said advanced care planning could start with a simple visit to the

GP, and early planning often meant patients could experience better quality of life in their last weeks. “If the plans are talked about, then the family is aware of what that person wants,” Ms Schajermann said. “If nobody has had the big conversation, sometimes they present to emergency without a (do-notresuscitate order) and we’ve gotten involved and they take another two weeks to die, because intervention has been made when it’s not wanted.” Bendigo residents have been invited to attend a forum on end of life care on Thursday, where they can make submissions and have their say on end of life framework.

A new discussion paper – Greater Say for Victorians: Improving End of Life Care – has been released, and consultation will be undertaken across the state over the next two months with health professionals, carers, families and members of the public.

their own home at the end of their lives,” she said. “It’s so important that families and the wider community talk openly and honestly about end of life care. It can be a difficult topic, but it affects us all.”

We know that more and more Victorians want to be cared for in the embrace of family and friends

State health minister Jill Hennessy said many Victorians would prefer to die at home rather than in care. “We know that more and more Victorians want to be cared for in the embrace of family and friends in

By LAURA HURLEY

Ms Schajermann said while many patients intend to die at home early on during their end of life planning, they often change their mind in care as they fear they will become a burden to their families. She said there was a need for in-

creased support for families looking after terminal patients so they could remain in their own home if they chose. “I know there are some submissions calling for more respite… there’s not enough respite out there. If people know they can have respite in a month’s time, they can actually deal with a lot issues,” she said. “It’s really hard because you do everything to support the family but you know that looking after a person 24 hours a day is very hard work, it’s very tiring, because you’ve got the physical side of it and also the emotional side of it.” For more information on the public forum or to make an online submission, visit www.betterendoflife. vic.gov.au The forum runs from 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Thursday, November 26.

FLIP CHART FOR SAFETY RESIDENTS and businesses can better prepare themselves in case of emergency with the launch of a flip chart on Wednesday. City of Greater Bendigo mayor, Rod Fyffe said people should place the flip chart on their fridge at home or in the office and use it to discuss how they can support family members and colleagues during an emergency. “Emergencies can have a long-term effect on us, our families and our community,” Cr Fyffe said. “The flip chart is a conversation starter and an opportunity for people to consider the risks they may be exposed to, such as fire, flood or heatwave, and what steps they can take to ensure they would be able to cope if they found themselves in an emergency situation.” The flip chart will be available from the council’s offices in Lyttleton Terrace and Heathcote, libraries in Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Kangaroo Flat and Heathcote, and the offices of the participating agencies.

Summer in the Parks a family favourite ONE of Bendigo’s most enduring and much loved events – the Summer in the Parks program – will be back this summer bigger and better than ever and featuring more than 50 free or low cost events over December, January and February. City of Greater Bendigo major events manager Terry Karamaloudis said programs for the event are now available in hard copy from the Bendigo Visitor Centre or online at www.bendigosummerintheparks.com

“The program has something for everyone, from the very young to the not so young to enjoy including Christmas celebrations, outdoor cinema, music events, garden and nature tours and health and fitness activities,” he said. “Activities will kick off on December 4 with the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rosalind Park and a range of other community carol events. “December will culminate

with a special family New Year’s Eve Pool Party at the Bendigo Aquatic Centre and not one, but two, fantastic fireworks displays at about 9.15pm and midnight to ring in the New Year. “January will feature a terrific range of music and other events including Australia Day community celebrations throughout Greater Bendigo while February is all about outdoor cinema, the Chinese New Year Festival and a range of other terrific activities.

“Summer is the perfect time to pack a picnic, visit our beautiful parks and gardens and enjoy the fantastic entertainment and activities on offer. “It’s a great way for friends and family to spend time together over the summer months.” For further information visit or pick up a program from the Bendigo Visitor Centre, 51-67 Pall Mall. The Centre is open 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day.

SANTA’S workshop step aside: residents at Mercy Health Bethlehem Home for the Aged are in the running for this year’s best homemade Christmas gifts. Members of the home’s craft group have spent all year knitting, sewing and decorating their wares for the annual Craft Extravaganza Sale on November 23. Handmade items on offer include greeting cards, knitted toys, knee rugs and even Christmas wreaths and decorations. Resident Dawn O’Neil said her room was full of lovely items she had made at the craft group and she had made several items for the Craft Extravaganza Sale. Robyn Green, one of four volunteers at the craft group, said the Craft Extravaganza Sale was a wonderful opportunity for residents to display their fine work. Visit the Mercy Health Bethlehem Home for the Aged sale from 10am until 3pm on Monday, November 23.

Climate change the hot topic

CAMPAIGNERS for social justice and climate change will join forces next Friday in a march aimed at promoting a better, safer and fairer future for communities across the globe. Caritas Australia and the Bendigo Sustainability Group plan to make Bendigo one of thousands of cities across the world taking to the streets for the People’s Climate March. Caritas Australia coordinator, Kerry Stone said caring for the planet was everybody’s concern. “People in the Pacific Islands are losing their homelands and Bendigo Wine Growers are being challenged to adapt to earlier warming and unpredictability,” she said. Caritas Australia works with communities in more than 30 countries, many of whom are already experiencing the impacts of climate change.

Caritas says climate change is undoing decades of development work to improve people’s lives Farming seasons are more unpredictable, the rising sea is taking away land, droughts are lasting longer, fresh water is becoming scarcer, and extreme weather events such as cyclones and storm surges have become more intense. As world leaders meet to discuss the future of the planet at important climate talks in Paris, Bendigo residents will walk alongside millions of people in major cities around the world to show support for an end to fossil fuels and a planned transition to 100 per cent renewable energy. The Bendigo Sustainability Group says Australia has just experienced its hottest October on record, and in Bendigo, the average daytime maximum last month was 27.4 degrees – almost seven degrees higher than the long-term average.

banner team: The climate march is planned for next Friday. “I think most people understand this is not just a warm patch,” Bendigo Sustainability Group president Chris Corr said. “It’s part of a longer-term, global

trend of repeated record-breaking temperatures. We’re experiencing local evidence of climate change.” Bendigo Wine Growers Association president, Wes Vine, said tem-

peratures such as those experienced in October hasten growth of the fruit and bring the vintage forward. ‘’Last year’s vintage was three weeks ahead of expectations. We look like having an early vintage again in the new year.” The region’s wine makers see climate change as a major challenge. “The grape vine is a very good indicator plant,” Mr Vine, an industry veteran with 35 years of winemaking experience on top of a science degree, said. “In the 1970s you could grow grape vines in this region with natural rainfall but now, if you don’t have irrigation, it is very difficult.” He said climate change is not all about warming; it is also about unpredictability. The Bendigo People’s Climate March will be held at 5.30pm on Friday November 27, starting at the Library Gardens.

self, when you have felt forced to hide your whole life, is the most beautiful feeling.” Szubanski’s book has been hailed as ground-breaking. “This is a remarkable memoir,” Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap, said. “The writing is assured and controlled, the storytelling expert and thoughtful, the language eloquent and moving.” Szubanski, best known as Sharon in the TV comedy Kath and Kim is sure she could not have faced her own fears without understanding those of her father. “For me, the key lies buried in the past,” she said. “The only way forward is back.” Magda Szubanski will be at The Capital in View Street, on Friday, November 27, 6pm to 7pm, followed by a book signing. Magda Szubanski says the experience of being a subject of the popular television series, Who Do You Think You Are, spurred her on to write her memoir. “I had already begun to write this story but that experience changed my life,” she said. “The experience of Who Do You Think You Are really knocked me around. More than anything it made me question myself.” Szubanski will be in Bendigo on November 27 to talk about that memoir, Reckoning. In the book, she talks with courage about her family’s struggles and how she believes in genetic legacy. Recalling in this often poetic and powerful book a 15thcentury painting she has seen in the Prado gallery in Spain called The Extraction of the Stone of Madness, she says she can sometimes feel that stone. “A palpable presence, an unwelcome thing that I want to squeeze out of my skull, using nothing but the sheer pressure of thought and concentration.” It’s the legacy of her father’s guilt that, Szubanski says, hung over her life, until, eventually, she gained enough courage to confront what she was afraid of, including publicly admitting she is a lesbian. “For more than four decades of my life sexuality was a huge issue for me,” she says. “Now I love that word. “Now I can truly be myself. New vision for the regions and investments reflect the priorities of the families, workers and businesses in Loddon Campaspe. Premier Daniel Andrews said the government would work for the Loddon Campaspe region with a commitment to create jobs, provide a better start for young people and ensure a brighter future for families and communities. “The statement will make sure that more than ever, government is working for regional communities. Not those with the loudest voices – but the families, workers and communities that are the heart and soul of regional Victoria,” Mr Andrews said. Nationals’ leader Peter Walsh described the announcement as “underwhelming” for regional Victoria. “If Daniel Andrews is putting the government ‘back to work’ for regional Victoria, where have they been for the past year?” he said. “Regional Victoria has lost 10,100 full-time jobs since Daniel Andrews came to office and this brochure does nothing to reverse that trend.” Shadow regional development minister Damian Drum said Victorians had waited a year for the government to come up with nine committees and a glossy booklet with no new money.

Speaking to Fairfax Media earlier this week, VicRoads chief executive officer John Merritt said that to compensate for the loss of vegetation, VicRoads had secured a “range of environmental offsets” including paying farmers in other areas to preserve native vegetation on their properties. VicRoads also would plant more than 8000 trees, plants and native grasses, but Mr Merritt acknowledged the sensitive issue concerning removing old growth trees. “We don’t want to take out a single tree more than what we have to, but we also have roads where communities who have been, quite rightly, campaigning for a generation to make them safer, and that’s our first priority,” Mr Merritt said. 4editorial Page 17

In at the deep end

By LAURA HURLEY

Marking 25 years WITH 25 years in business, real estate agent Darryn Mawby is still as keen as ever. After working with another company, the then 28-year-old Mr Mawby went it alone because he wanted to run the business the way he wanted to, with a more personal approach. Mr Mawby set up business at 70 Mitchell Street and has since moved to 105 Mitchell Street where the business is now. “I wanted to be involved in something where if you worked hard the rewards were there,” he said. “It’s also fun helping home buyers achieve their goals.

“We have seen the first home buyers who later come with their own children to find a home.” Mr Mawby said the company has had a lot of stability in the 25 years, with many staff having impressive length of service. “I’m 53 now, and I love it now as much as I ever have,” he said. “I always thought I would be thinking of retiring at 55, but I am enjoying it so much I easily have another 10 or 15 years in me yet.” As for the 25 years, Mr Mawby said the time had flown. “Hell yes, 25 years in a heartbeat.”

TEAM MAWBY: Darryn Mawby, Andrew Murphy and Sonya Hancock.

SHE may have only been in the job for five weeks, but the City of Greater Bendigo council’s new organisation support director Kerryn Ellis has been thrown straight into the thick of things. With rates capping set to begin on July 1 next year, and property revaluations upcoming in January, Ms Ellis said council staff were prepared for a demanding 2016-17 budget. “Rates capping will be set at CPI (consumer price index), which will be a challenge,” she said. “Many of our expenses aren’t subject to CPI, like construction in asset maintenance.” Councils will be able to apply to the state government for exemptions from the cap when setting rates, however Ms Ellis said councillors had not yet indicated whether they were considering making an application. “The challenge will be finding ways to deliver services and finding savings in the operating budget,” she said. Coming from a career in local government, Ms Ellis has The challenge will be finding ways predominately worked in metto deliver services ropolitan councils but said she had been attracted to a regional council due to the scope of its projects. “I started in a customer service position on a two week contract, the thick of it: Kerryn Ellis. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN and haven’t really left since,” she said. “I’m loving Bendigo – I came the transport strategy, the organic services, but at regional councils to the area because of the sort of waste service. there’s more scope for projects projects the city was working on. “With metropolitan councils and things that connect with the “Projects such as Ulumbarra, it’s mostly about the delivery of community.”

Pride of the city Bendigo’s tourism industry was shining bright at this year’s RACV Victorian Tourism Awards. The gala event took place on Monday night at the Melbourne Convention Centre. At the event, City of Greater Bendigo executive manager for tourism, Kathryn Mackenzie, was recognised for her outstanding contribution by an Individual towards furthering the Victorian tourism industry. In addition, the Bendigo Tramways took out the award for cultural attraction of the year for the second year running, while the Woodhouse restaurant received the bronze award in the tourism restaurants

and catering services category. Bendigo Tourism chairman Bob Downing said it was fantastic to see Bendigo receiving the accolades. “We’re continuing to keep the city’s name up in lights,” he said. “Particular congratulations to Kathryn Mackenzie who is an absolute stalwart of tourism in Bendigo and has been instrumental in growing Bendigo’s tourism into the thriving industry it is today. “Bendigo’s tourism sector contributes $530 million a year to the local economy and these awards indicate that we are on the right track to continue growing this contribution

for years to come.” Council’s city futures director Stan Liacos said it is a much deserved award for Ms Mackenzie, who has dedicated more than 25 years of her life to the Australian tourism industry. “Anyone who knows Kathryn Mackenzie, knows that she is a passionate, tenacious and unwavering visionary who is fully committed to making Bendigo tourism the best it can be,” he said. “The award is wonderful recognition of her work over more than 25 years in the Australian tourism industry. “On behalf of the City of Greater Bendigo I con-

gratulate Kathryn on this fantastic and much deserved recognition.” Ms Mackenzie started with the City of Greater Bendigo in 1995 as manager of the Bendigo Visitor Centre before being appointed tourism manager in 2000. Ms Mackenzie has played key roles in relocating the Bendigo Visitor Centre to the former post office in Pall Mall, obtaining funding to develop a Heathcote Visitor Centre and growing visitor numbers by positioning Bendigo as a strong cultural arts and heritage destination to local, regional, Melbourne and interstate markets.

Community groups fear GST hike POTENTIAL changes to the GST could impact the way that not-forprofit organisations deliver services, according to local community leaders. The changes currently being discussed by the federal government include an increase of GST to 15 per cent, with the coalition refusing to rule out exemptions on essential products such as fresh produce. Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative general manager Shane Mclennan said if the potential changes were put in place, notfor-profits and members of the local Indigenous community would be adversely impacted.

“It would affect us as an organisation, but also our community members,” he said. “Many of these people are lowincome earner or unemployed – it’s just going to be harder for them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “So it hurts us in both ways – they will lean on us for more support and our costs will increase. “We have specific programs aimed at healthy eating. It would leave us with two options – either we can’t do it, or we need to apply for extra funding.” Federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said the government needed to be clearer about what

tax reform policy they intended to bring to parliament. “They haven’t said when and they haven’t said what – what they’ve said is that everything is on the table,” Ms Chesters said. Ms Chesters labelled the current reform being discussed as “lazy tax”. Liberal senator Michael Ronaldson labelled Labor’s criticism of the reform as “desperate”. “Nothing has been announced,” he said. “What we need is a national debate about taxation reform. “We need regional centres to grow – and we want a better tax system.”

MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN: Bonnie Reidy is 100. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN

Bonnie at 100 By BRYLIE HARRIS

THERE is no secret to becoming a centenarian according to local woman, Bonnie Reidy who celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday. Born on November 18, 1915 in Rushworth, Mrs Reidy spent her childhood on a farm where she milked the cows, churned butter and had to get to school either via walking or horseback each day. As an accomplished dressmaker at the Beehive, Mrs Reidy often made clothes for her eight children and even created her own wedding gown, which she wore on November 19,

Bendigo Day Surgery is delighted to share that it is turning 7 this month. Since opening its doors to patients on November 11th, 2008, over 35,000 procedures have been performed at the facility, for clients from all over Victoria. This increasing workload has necessitated the recent development of a new carpark for clients and visitors, a welcome improvement to those visiting the day surgery, or Melbourne Pathology and the consulting suites upstairs. At Bendigo Day Surgery we offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and surgical services, and all procedures at BDS are performed by Bendigo specialists. Over the past couple of years we have seen an increase in overall surgeries performed, particularly in the areas of Ophthalmic (eye) Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. An exciting new development too is the introduction of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery to Bendigo Day Surgery. Please visit our website www.bendigodaysurgery.com.au for a comprehensive list of Bendigo surgeons and proceduralists who use the services of Bendigo Day Surgery. As well as being a great place to have a medical procedure, Bendigo Day Surgery is also a great place to work. Operations Manager, Terri Billett and Director of Nursing, Sally McInerney are very proud of the facility and its excellent staff. The facility was purpose built in 2008 to ensure all clients receive efficient, safe and dignified care during their admission, and the staff work hard at making sure this is the case. “…I have been in a great number of medical places and I found your staff very professional and friendly. If I had any concerns about my procedures they had gone after my first contact with the nursing staff. Your staff are some of the best I have ever come across.” The Management and Staff of the Bendigo Day Surgery are very proud to offer this level of service to the Greater Bendigo Community, and beyond! Please consider this facility should the need for a medical procedure ever arise.

1938 when she married William Reidy. Despite losing her son, Paul, in Vietnam in 1969 and her husband in 1978, her daughter, Bernadette Dove, said Mrs Reidy remains a strong and resilient woman. “She has been a role model to all of us and is friendly and loved by everyone everywhere she goes,” Mrs Dove said. When asked about how turning 100 feels, Mrs Reidy simply said “it’s okay”. “You can’t go back further,” she said. Mrs Reidy will celebrate the milestone with her friends and family on November 28, along with some of her 23 grand children and 33 great grandchildren.

Lightning moves LIGHTNING Reef Primary School is celebrating the departure of its very first Energy Breakthrough team. The team will be competing in the 2015 Maryborough Energy Breakthrough until Saturday. The team has been practicing hard throughout the year to make it to the event. This race holds great significance for the school, as it is the first time they have sent a team.

The Lightning Reef Energy Breakthrough squad has worked hard to ensure the students are in peak physical form, with students experiencing specialised training from a variety of locations around Bendigo. Teachers Jarrod and Tim have ensured that students have experienced a variety of both speed and endurance training to sustain the long shifts required in the vehicle.

The Affordable Alternative

The team has also worked extremely hard with fundraising over the course of the year, spearheaded by teacher Christine and a number of parents. The team has been very fortunate with support provided from the local school community and has bought their very first bike, as well as equipment that will see the program be sustainable for many years to come.

Students gear up for trial CATHOLIC College Bendigo students from years seven to 12 have been busy preparing for the 25th running of the RACV Energy Breakthrough in Maryborough. The secondary teams events started today, with presentations and design and construction each adding 25 per cent to their overall score. The real action heats up on Saturday with the start of the 24-hour Endurance Trial where competitors work to keep their vehicle speeding around the track through all hours of the day and night, learning about innovation, technology, team work, fitness and having a bit of fun along the way. In the running WINNING a state championship is no mean feat, but when it is comes in your first attempt at an event, it is all the more impressive. That is exactly what long distance runner Brady Threlfall did in taking out the Victorian Marathon Championship and in doing so became a joint winner of the Bendigo Weekly/ Prime 7-backed Sportstar of the Year award for October. Threlfall shared the honour with lawn bowlers Barry Anset and Ian Ross, who combined to play a key role in winning the Australian Senior Sides Championship in Tasmania. Threlfall’s effort at October’s Melbourne Marathon, his first competi-

tive event, saw him claim the title as the first Victorian to finish the race.

BOWLED OVER: Barry Anset and Ian Ross are in the team.

MARATHON MAN: Brady Threlfall. The Bendigo Harriers Athletics Club member finished seventh overall in a time of 2:26:39. Brad Milosevic won the event.

The Echuca-based athlete told the Riverine Herald in the lead-up that he wanted to have “a positive experience” at the

event, but it is fair to say the 27-year-old got more than he bargained for, and has a big future in the discipline. Bendigo Bowls Club teammates Ross, a multiple Australian Singles Champion who skippered one of three rinks for the Vics, and Anset played a key role in an almost-perfect campaign. Victoria only lost one of the

seven games it contested, by nine shots to New South Wales, amassing a huge plus-121 shot differential to comfortably take the title. Anset and Ross are currently continuing Bendigo’s push in the Bendigo Bowls Division season, with both players skippering rinks. Bendigo sits fourth after a weekend win over Eaglehawk.

IF you’re keen to try your hand at cycling, the Central Victorian Veterans Cycling Club women’s skill session and come ‘n’ try event might be for you. Running this Wednesday at the Emu Creek Hall from 5.45pm, the event is open to any woman over 30 who rides a road bike. The event will include a skills session with elite women’s racer Nicole McNamara, followed by a 33-kilometre scratch race for cyclists to test their skills. Designed to encourage potential cyclists to have a go and build confidence, organiser Cheryle Barker said often women felt intimidated out of trying the sport. “For a lot of new people getting into a race can be a big step and sometimes women feel more confident if they’ve been shown a few skills around bunch riding and they’re not forced into a mixed group to start off with,” Ms Barker said. “They get to ride with other

beginners, they just feel more confident and if they want to, they can take the next step to actually race. “It’s free, it’s a come and try event. And we ask people to call to register.” Ms Barker said gaining the confidence to compete in veterans and women’s events began when she built the skills to race competi-

Bendigo needs more independent councillors In relation to our local council, last week’s edition of the Bendigo Weekly presented a range of very interesting perspectives from the immediate past and newly elected mayors and three excellent pieces by correspondents Mssrs Burns, Carrington and McKenzie. Among his reflections Cr Cox proffered his support for “a popularly appointed mayor” including “a different office for the mayor and councillors”, notably with their own budget, secretarial support and perhaps research officer, all aimed at producing a different perspective to the “corporate point of view”. He followed up later with a good example, in his support for the state government “recommending that councils have about a three per cent (rate) rise”. This was totally at odds with his successor parroting the corporate opposition to a rates cap. In musing over the prospect of him seeking re-election next year, Cr Cox talked about the importance of other prospective candidates “... educating themselves about what the role of councillor is”. Finally on the appointment of the new mayor for a fourth time, it was interesting the way Cr Cox chose to describe Cr Rod Fyffe, as bringing “a different dynamic to the role” and that “we know what we are getting”. Concluding: “I’m sure he’ll do a great job.” Reading the letters of the three above named writers, there is in fact significant and widespread misgiving surrounding the next mayoral term. I am prepared to be somewhat more blunt and even personal than perhaps convention dictates, regarding the calibre of the majority of our current crop of councillors. In particular I would cite the mayor and Cr Weragoda, who for me stand out as people who have demonstrated a very narrow grasp of the principles and practises of their role and a demonstrated lack of ability to make and present genuine independent argument. Indeed with the review of the Local Government Act 1989 and the many issues and widespread concerns voiced in relation to the performance of the City of Greater Bendigo, it will be vital that the next election produces a majority of much more independent and determined councillors.

In this regard I have no doubt that the run-up to next October will be very revealing. Alan Howard, Strathfieldsaye

Demolition a poor call The City of Greater Bendigo’s councillors, CEO and director of city futures Stanley Liacos, are responsible for the greatest reprehensible, shameful, disgraceful and inexcusable decision in the history of Bendigo; the demolition of the 31-year-old Kangaroo Flat Community Leisure Centre. There must be consequences for this madness so make sure you hold the councillors responsible by not voting for any of them standing in the next election. Then the new council should terminate Mr Niemann as CEO, appoint a new CEO and direct the new CEO to terminate the services of Mr Liacos forthwith. We should not forgive nor forget. Colin Burns, Strathfieldsaye

Ignoring constituents Some time ago I raised the issue of no footpath for residents in Pallett Street, Golden Square, overgrown with grass and thicket, unable to be walked through, and now possibly becoming a fire hazard for this summer. The reply from City of Greater Bendigo council was that the footpath plan considered this area was not in need of any urgent action for a path and that the footpath would be addressed in due time, as it was on the list of works to be done. Forget about the elderly citizens who have paid rates for years with no ease of access to the bus stop in their area. Yet, we have the CBD again disrupted as Mitchell Street, which has a good footpath, is to have a make-over which will again disrupt business and shoppers in the CBD. Council once again disrupts the business sector and polarises the community, causing angst while not dealing with the bread and butter issues which affect ratepayers. Any reasonable support for councillors who ignore their constituents and wards, do so at their peril, at the next election. Bill Collier, Golden Square

Asbestos concerns When I became Australia’s first Asbestos Awareness Ambassador I pledged my full support to this vital campaign to increase awareness of how dangerous asbestos can be to homeowners, tradespeople and families when renovating, maintaining or demolishing homes or other structures. Asbestos can be found in brick, weatherboard, clad and fibro homes behind wall and floor tiles, under floor coverings including carpets and, in walls, ceilings, roofs, gutters and even dog kennels. It could be anywhere. Sadly, current research tells us that people are unknowingly exposing themselves and their families to dangerous asbestos fibres during home renovations, and with TV renovating programs fuelling the popularity of DIY, during national Asbestos Awareness Month (November). Together with my fellow ambassadors Cherie Barber, Scott Cam, Barry Du Bois, John Jarratt and Scott McGregor we hope to help save the lives of people like Mrs Carol Klintfält OAM who tragically lost her battle with malignant mesothelioma on November 7, 2014. I had the great honour of knowing Carol through our work in raising awareness of the very real and present danger of asbestos to homeowners and the tragic consequences of renovating without

knowing the risks of disturbing asbestos products which can be fatal. This heart-breaking consequence was Carol’s reality. Carol developed mesothelioma because she inhaled asbestos fibres working with an architect and while handling fibro sheets when renovating the family home in the 1970s. Mesothelioma is a cancer that usually develops between 20-50 years after inhaling asbestos fibres. There is no cure and the average survival time after diagnosis is only 10-12 months – hard hitting statistics none of us can ignore. An extraordinary woman, Carol was more than a statistic. When she lost her battle with asbestos-related disease, her family lost a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister and many lost a very dear and special friend. This family were no different to the hundreds and thousands of homeowners throughout Australia. When they renovated their home, they didn’t know the dangers or that the impact of working with asbestos would be devastating. One in every three homes built or renovated before 1987 will contain asbestos products all Australians need to “Get to kNOw asbestos this NOvember” and visit www. asbestosawareness.com.au to learn the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely because it’s not worth the risk. Thanks for generosity Very Special Kids is grateful to the Bendigo community for supporting the Bendigo Tour of Tasmania. Last Saturday’s auction night at Symes BMW raised an incredible $76,000 which takes the tally of funds raised past $100,000. To the organisers, the local businesses who donated items and the 200 guests – thank you for your generosity. Very Special Kids is committed to extending the level of support available to local families who are caring for a child with a life-threatening condition. Currently, this figure is 28 families from the Greater Bendigo region – however it has been estimated that there may be up to 50 local families who would qualify for the services that we offer freeof-charge to all Victorian families. To the 20 local cyclists who will be riding around Tasmania in February – thank you for believing in the work we do and for your absolute dedication to making a difference to the families who need help the most in the local community. Most importantly – ride safely! More information about the Bendigo Tour of Tasmania can be found at bendigotot.org, or visit www.vsk.org.au to find out more about Very Special Kids. AGED CARE ENJOYING LIFE

Interchange woes CONCERNS about the number of trees needing to be removed from the magnificent rolling countryside at Ravenswood, south of Bendigo, as part of the much needed interchange project are continuing to grow as the realisation that initial estimates were only about half correct hit home. For its part, VicRoads is absolutely right to nominate the safety of road users as its number one priority. The loss of life at the current Ravenswood interchange, and the equally unacceptable large number of serious collisions and near misses over the years only reinforces the need for this upgrade and improved facility to go ahead. So in essence, this project is about righting a wrong that was/ is the original Ravenswood interchange with an 80 kilometre per hour speed limit. But it’s difficult not to think that the local environment has been short changed by an initially sloppy estimation process dating back to when this process was first planned. There is a huge difference between 1000 and 1875 trees.

BendigoWeekly

Editorial Comment Sadly, this is not the first time VicRoads has been caught out when it comes to overly-conservative estimates about just how many trees need to go in order for a project to be completed. The question begs to be asked: Had VicRoads learned more from its experiences in the west of the state, more specifically around Buangor, would it have been more attentive to initial estimates and the methodologies used to determine how many trees needed to be felled to allow for construction of the new Ravenswood interchange? Now there’s an added complication, with claims from locals that a pair of eagles have nested in one of the remnant trees, which just happens to be one that needs to go in order for new power lines to be installed as a first stage to the project.

That the nest also includes a pair of chicks, only adds more pressure, and also an obvious need for a more delicate and sensitive layer of management of the project. Nobody denies keeping people alive on our roads has to be the number one priority. But this was also a chance to show lessons have been learned from past mistakes, and sadly, it appears VicRoads has failed again. VicRoads has confirmed the initial estimate that 1000 trees needed to be removed from the immediate area at Ravenswood was based on aerial images and did not include smaller trees obscured from view beneath the canopy of large trees. It’s also pleasing to note that once the interchange is built in 2017, VicRoads plans to revegetate the site with around 8100 trees, shrubs and grasses, but these plantings fail to represent the grandeur of some of what is going to be lost. In the meantime, however, large numbers of trees – some dating back more than 500 years, will have to make way for the development of an improved interchange something that’s been too long in the making.

opinion On the brink of change for the better By KAREN CORR

Make a Change Australia I WRITE this in response to recent comments by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank chairman Robert Johanson where he expressed concern about the impact on business and the reputation of Bendigo following mosque protests. Sure, recent events are not good for our city and we should continue to work on addressing these issues among the various avenues that exist. But when it comes to what we communicate about our town, there is much to celebrate and share with the rest of the world. For example, did you know that Bendigo is an

amazing creative community with a growing number of creative initiatives popping up every day? You may have an inkling that this is happening through grass roots initiatives such as the Bendigo

But have you tuned into what else is happening? I am in the process of organising Make a Change’s final Outside the Square event for the year which is all about

active in our community right now. These are just the ones I know of, and I’m sure there are more. Collectively, these initiatives build vibrancy to our town, social connections and health and well being benefits to many. The brilliant thing

about it is that it’s not one organisation, or one initiative or one person that is contributing. Whether a maker, doer, or supporter, Bendigo’s creative community is something that everyone can get involved in and be a part of. If you are a business who is concerned about our city’s reputation I encourage you, as a start, to find out about these inspiring creative initiatives and the people behind them. Then support them and let everyone else know about them. A livable vibrant city is one where people create and innovate. Let’s build on the creativity that already exists in Bendigo and be the envy of the world.

Driving in a nanny state New driver signs may be a letter too far

OME bright spark decided last week it would be a good idea for senior drivers to have an S plate. This would be similar to the L for learner and P for provisional in use already. As good or bad an idea as this may seem, do we really need this much information? I don’t know what age they were thinking about, but I have a horrible feeling the young whippersnapper who thought of this idea is about 12 and has no idea how to wipe his nose, let alone drive. Where does this stop? Do we have a 50S and a 60S? Or does it just kick in at 70S? Probably by about 80 it might be an idea, but the rest is pure folly. There are some really poor drivers of all ages out there, and a letter P has always been for me a “prickplate”, based on the way they drive. Where else can this go? How about MWKSD for mothers with kids so distracted, usually seen about 8.30am on any weekday. Or the tradie ute with

They could also have a front plate YIDNTBTC for yes, I do need to be this close. Alongside the P plates could be the extra signs. ILDB I love doing burnouts. When they get really good at the burnouts they can remove the P, no longer provisional. I don’t know if I would be allocated a 50S plate, but I would like a rear plate

saying YCSTFSB – you can’t stop that fast, stay back. As with most drivers I think I am OK at driving, and this is where the problem lies. If we have letters of all kinds on cars, not only will we be distracted but we will be able to mock those afflicted with a plate. It worries me a bit that some pen pusher will come out with letters of all kinds and before long the insurance companies will find a reason to up the premiums for those with plates. It almost scares me now

to think I drove for 22 hours with an L plate and that was it. Passed my test and was let out into the big wide world of London roads. Really I should have had a very large plate post-test. EW things are more iconic in the true sense of the word than south-east Australia’s highcountry cattlemen. Whether the occasion is a local cultural celebration or the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics, if a “typical” Australian character is needed, horse riders dressed in flowing oilskin coats and cracking stockwhips are this nation’s automatic go-to. Now, a hardcover coffeetable-cum-reference book by photographer-writer Melanie Faith Dove captures the contemporary lifestyle of these mountain graziers in a combination of informative, sensitively worded text and artistic images. Faith Dove describes the working life of a “cattleman” – a generic, gender-neutral term that does not discriminate against the many women who carry on this generations-long tradition – in four main sections aligned with the seasons and rounds out her narrative with a fifth chapter, “Loss: The Next Conversation”, in which she summarises the arguments both for and against allowing cattle into the Alpine National Park. While the author is clearly aligned with the families fea-

tured, she does an admirable job of presenting in a fair and balanced way the anti-grazing movement’s reasons for seeking to have the practice permanently banned. The pages shine with portraits of the people, horses and dogs that together continue this mid-1800s heritage style of farming. Retired state MP and former Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria CEO Graeme Stoney, a fifth-generation leaseholder at Merrijig near Mansfield, is pictured in action on the cover; the book’s foreword is by Geoff Burrowes, producer of The Man From Snowy River films and a member by marriage of another famous Merrijig dynasty, the Lovicks; and the introduction is the work of high-country historian and founder of the Mittagundi and Wollangarra youth eduction projects, Ian Stapleton. Although the cattlemen featured by Faith Dove inhabit the Great Dividing Range and Tasmania’s Central Highlands, they might well be familiar to Bendigonians for their participation in Bendigo Easter Festival street parades. - Rosalea Ryan

ONE with the Wind, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Harry Potter there are only a handful of great books that have been successfully translated to film. More often viewers are disappointed as the writers and directors take our literary visions and turn them into something else entirely. Quite often our imaginative powers are far greater than the best that Hollywood can offer us. While not a film, the current ABC adaptation of Anna Karenina, The Beautiful Lie, clearly belongs to the category of an exceptional, successful adaptation of a book to film. The main reasons for the success of this series are both the contemporary setting and the total fidelity to the theme of Anna Karenina – desperate love. Anna’s love transcends her successful marriage, her child, and her status in society.

The universality of the theme holds true whether the story is set in Russia or contemporary Australia. And it holds true because of the brave and imaginative use of the medium of film. The Beautiful Lie, adapted by Alice Bell and Jonathan Gavin, casts Anna (played by Sarah Snook) and Zander (played by Rodger Corser) in the novel as sporting celebrities. They may not be nobility but their celebrity status ensures that Anna will be cast as the fallen woman nevertheless. Count Vronsky or Skeet in The Beautiful Lie, is played by Benedict Samuel. Skeet’s job as a music producer gives him an independent status which transcends Anna’s position as a respectable mother and wife. As the series comes to its conclusion, it is a universal truth, we are led to believe, that the woman will always pay.

Blasko tours with new album S

ARAH Blasko is bringing her new album, Eternal Return, to Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre next April. Blasko has become a force on the Australian music scene, her honest lyrics and refreshing melodies earning her plenty of fans. Her latest album is a contrast from previous efforts, the string-heavy elements of I Am Ready replaced by synthesizers, but the songs are still as meaningful as ever. “I got interested in old synths again, which I haven’t been for a few years,” Blasko said. “A lot of my favourite pop records are synth-based and many of my favourite loves songs are of that ilk.” The album’s lead single, I’d Be Lost, draws upon Talking Heads for inspiration according to Blasko, and has a distinctly up-beat feel to it. Deep into the album, Beyond and

Luxurious showcase the immense strength of Blasko’s voice, the latter in particular a dark, brooding tune that accentuates the strength in its raw, plain-spoken lyrics. That is followed by the optimistic Only One, while Say What You Want and Without cap what is a well-rounded record off expertly. Blasko is unabashed in admitting her latest is an album of love. “I’m very open about that. It’s a ‘love album’, and it’s from personal experience,” she said. While remaining somewhat of a departure from what Blasko has previously done, Eternal Return is again a work of unmistakable quality from one of the country’s finest talents. Sarah Blasko plays Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre on Friday, April 22. Tickets are available through www.ulumbarratheatre. com.au - Joel Peterson

what’s on...

Identical names T

HE Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders (SES) has led me to allow a great variety of personalities and their associations to be revealed. At times it has been challenging to find either personal or any other information about a particular member of the SES. It would have been noticed not all of the people covered so far had been active at the same time in the SES’s charitable performances. Extraordinary talents that individuals had developed, or had nurtured from a young age with their parent’s help and encouragement later came to the fore. In the late 19th century there was a significant number of Bendigonians who had not only graced the stages of theatres here in this city but on the international circuit as well. The gentleman illustrated in the accompanying photograph in this week’s issue was named Thomas Stewart, a member and participated in SES activities. This story will concern a different Thomas Stewart who lived to become 71 years-of-age, and passed away in mid 1906. He hailed from

Liverpool, England, having come to the colony of Victoria in 1854 as a 19-year-old. Together with his brother they became shopkeepers at Eaglehawk. Shopkeeping was good to the brothers, both having a sound business sense, so they managed to save money. Thomas desired to go on the land having selected an area not too far from the diggings at Lockwood, there establishing his own orchard and farm. From his experience as a shopkeeper Thomas knew that vegetables were much sought after, so at first he developed a market garden while his fruit trees were establishing themselves. Thomas was a most successful horticulturalist, the vegetables were his gold. The seasons were kind to this man on the land and at most times he had access to water so essential in his horticultural pursuits. Because of his growing success, Thomas Stewart was able to select more land, this time at Newbridge. It was during this time that he branched out into another career, having

been successful in being appointed as a part time rate collector and valuer in 1874 for the Marong Shire. While others were looking after Thomas’s land holdings, he taking on mainly the role of supervisor and continued to execute his shire appointment with efficiency and skill. The councillors were so impressed by his performance that in 1890 he was offered the position of shire secretary; today equivalent to the CEO. Thomas Stewart did not disappoint his appointers, he carried on the work in the same vein as he had done in his previous position which he continued to also hold. He exercised diplomacy and tact in all his dealings with those that he came in contact with. Thomas Stewart’s health unfortunately was not as good as he would have wished and this led him to resign the position of shire secretary, much to the regret of the council. Unfortunately his health continued to be of great concern to his family

NAMESAKE: Thomas Stewart, SES manager and many friends it continuing to deteriorate. Excessive fluid and a weakening heart restricted Thomas’s activities so that in the beginning of 1906 he hardly went away from his home “Breeze Hill” at Lockwood. Despite of the best efforts of doctors De Ravin and Gaffney, there was little they could do to stave off the inevitable. Two of Thomas Stewart’s sons also went on to the land while two of his four daughters were married to farmers. The organisational capacity of the Thomas Stewart of whom has been written above was also shared by the other Thomas Stewart (pictured), an active member and manager of the SES.

Congratulations due R

OBERTSON Dental Innovations have recently congratulated Dr Graham Robertson on his successful completion of the prestigious Diploma of Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. As many of Robertson Dental Innovations’ patients know, Dr Robertson was in Scotland during September sitting his exams after completing a year of further training in Implant Dentistry. Founded in 1505, The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (www.rcsed.ac.uk) is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious surgical bodies. With the successful completion of his Diploma of Implant Dentistry, Dr Robertson and his dedicated team will be providing patients a full range of quality

All facets of dentistry are covered in-house including family, children’s and general dentistry as well as advanced dentistry techniques such as dental implants crowns, bridges and veneers. LISA MELLEUISH: Personal experiences has helped start her new career.

Dietary changes can prove effective L

ISA Melleuish’s personal experience with her own children, was the inspiration for her to go back to university at the age of 37. With a chronically ill child, and questioning the never ending courses of antibiotics, Lisa decided to look at other options and visited a natural medicine practitioner. “I was blown away by the dramatic effect on my daughter’s health and behaviour just by changing her diet,” Lisa said. Knowing she could make a difference in the lives of other children and families, Lisa went back to university. Seven and a half years later, Lisa has graduated with her degree in Nutritional Medicine and recently opened Nourish Nutritional Medicine Clinic. Lisa embraces an holistic, individualised approach to health and well-being and uses the power of diet, nutritional supplementation and lifestyle recommendations to help in the management and prevention of acute and chronic illnesses in both children and adults.

Photo: GARRY PATERSON

“I don’t believe in a band-aid approach and focus on getting to the grass roots of the problem and prevent it from reoccurring.” Lisa is passionate about children’s health and is concerned about the rapidly increasing incidence of once virtually unheard of childhood diseases. “A large majority of children’s health, wellbeing and behaviour is a direct result of what they eat.” Reoccurring colds and ear infections, hyperactivity, sleep disorders and trouble concentrating can often be attributed to diet according to Lisa. “I can work with you and your child to address their individual needs and optimise their health and wellbeing.” Lisa also specialises in IBS and other gut conditions, food sensitivities, allergies, intolerances, sleep and other nervous system complaints, fatigue, and weight loss. Nourish Nutritional Medicine Clinic, 28A Somerville Street, Bendigo. Appointments essential – phone 0439 076 603.

ENFIELD Blind and Curtain Cleaning have had a hectic 15 months, with numerous enquiries about cleaning Luxaflex’s designer range of blinds. So it was no surprise when Rod and Sam Hamilton jetted off to America for a USA Blind Cleaners Association workshop near Chicago, where they were shown the latest techniques for the successful cleaning of luminettes, silouhettes, duettes and other specialty blinds. “Currently there are only two blind and curtain cleaners qualified in Australia to clean luminettes and these other luxury blinds and they’re in Sydney,” Rod said. “So all blinds are packaged and sent by freight to Sydney to be cleaned and transported back, making cleaning very expensive.” Luxaflex recommend qualified cleaners to clean their products, not just anyone. “Other products and equipment are much more severe on your furnishings

than those specially made for soft fabrics as ours are, “ Sam said, who will occasionally help Rod as well as continuing to see all her Bendigo Body and Soul clients. Rod and Sam suggest homeowners call Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning immediately if they spill something on their curtains or blinds. “ Don’t try to remove the stain your self, you can be making it much worse,” Rod said. “We hear so of so many people putting their blinds or curtains in the bath, pool or on the clothes line to clean - please don’t, you risk the integrity of the fabrics, colour fading and shrinkage.” Denfield Blind and Curtain Cleaning’s prices are very affordable, so why not give them a call? Phone Rod on 0439 132 021 for an obligation free on-site quote or email denfieldblinds@gmail.com.

We offer an extensive range of gifts for babies through to grandparents - the pharmacy is a treasure trove of suprises and it is widely known our prices are competitive, across both gift ware and traditional pharmacy lines. Pining for Christmas

ITH December less than three weeks away it’s just about time again when all our thoughts turn to Christmas and the Y Service Club of Bendigo’s Christmas trees. Throughout Bendigo, there are still hundreds if not thousands of families who still favour the traditional Christmas tree. “Some of our regular customers and their families have had getting a Y Service Club tree from us for up to three generations,” Christmas tree coordinator Ken Morrison said, while supervising the early delivery of a tree along with a much welcome cheque for $3000 to the Discovery Science and Technology Centre. Last year the Y Service Club donated $57,000 to local charities and organisations, funded through their annual Christmas tree sale and book fairs. Traditional Christmas trees will again be on sale Friday, December 4, through to Sunday, December 6 at the Tom Tweed Stadium, Mundy Street, then daily from December 11 until December 20 from noon until 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am and 4pm on weekends Two other organisations which have also recently benefited from the the Y Service Club’s generosity include Bendigo Foodshare and the Smith Family who have already shared $26,000 with nine other community groups in the latest round of donations. For further enquires regarding trees, phone Christmas Tree coordinator Ken Morrison on 0439 360 510.

T bUTE Trays they take pride in the exceptional quality of the steel trays they manufacture on site. Not only are they built to last but they are functional and good looking as well. At bUTE Trays all their products are fully welded for extra strength – after all, their trays have to work as hard as their customers do. All bUTE trays come standard with a mandrel bent hurdle and your choice of rear window protection. They invite all their customers to call in at their workshop and discuss their individual needs, as only the person using their products really know what they require. bUTE Trays and Accessories have

a large range of options available including toolboxes, service bodies and full tradesmen’s racks. They can also incorporate a tipper unit and under-tray drawers if needed. If you’re buying a small truck, they can help out with that as well. bUTE Trays can also modify and alter your existing tray or custom build a tray to your liking. All bUTE trays are sandblasted, primed and powder-coated in a range of colours before being fitted. So when the time comes for that new tray, call in and see Colin or Damien, at bUTE Trays and Accessories,19-21 Allen Street, Epsom, phone 5448 8285. Don’t settle for a good tray... demand a bUTE tray.

Guess who’s back? Back again? Smooches back, tell a friend! Hi, my name is Mr Smooches and I am once again available for adoption. Why Mr Smooches? Because I am the world’s smoochiest cat!! Brave & bold, I will smooch on anything – dogs, cats, humans I love them all. My personality is the best you could hope for in a cat and if you would like to offer me a home you won’t be disappointed! Please please visit me for smooches at the RSPCA Bendigo.

My name is Jan & I am a rare greyhound indeed – I love to play! Whether it’s in the water or with a ball I could play all day long. I would dearly love to have a doggy friend at home with me as they could be my playmate! My new home would be best without cats or other small pets. If you are after a sweet natured, happy girl then I am the dog for you. Please come and see me at the RSPCA Bendigo.

Suns’ flying start By JOEL PETERSON

STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS captain Linton Jacobs says there is no magic formula for his side’s undefeated start to the season, which the Suns will look to continue in round five against Eaglehawk. A Jack Neylon ton led Maristians to victory over Golden Square last week, while Eaglehawk improved its record to three wins and a draw from its opening quartet of games with a hard-fought åΩwin over Strathfieldsaye. Getting off to a good start will again be a key for the Suns against the Hawks’ pace attack, led by spearheads Richard Tibbett and Shaun Knott and backed up manfully by Cory Jacobs, Cam McGlashan, Nick Farley and

spinner Brodie Hawke. Strong starts have been a key for the reigning premiers and are the main component in their early success, according Jacobs. “That’s a massive area that we’ve been trying to work on, our strength probably is that we bat all the way down but our game plan is to make sure we haven’t lost too many wickets at tea,” he said. “If the top order can get a good start it makes it a hell of a lot easier. “To have those guys in form is a huge positive. Andrew Hosking has made a ton, Cam Taylor has made runs and Jack Neylon had a bit of a breakout game at the weekend and is playing really well.” This weekend begins a testing run of matches for Maristians, with the Eaglehawk clash followed

by games against Bendigo United and Bendigo before the Christmas break. Jacobs, who is in his seventh season as Suns’ captain, said his side is looking forward to the challenge of hosting the Hawks at All Seasons Oval. “That will really show where we’re at, and I know the group is really up for the challenge and looking forward to it, especially this week against Eaglehawk,” he said. “The batsmen, as a group, are looking forward to facing their bowlers. Their bowling is their strength, but we like the ball coming on to the bat with a bit of pace so hopefully we can use that to good effect. “That bowling attack presents a big challenge but if we can post

LEADER: Linton Jacobs behind the stumps. a good score, we think we can put them under some pressure with the ball.” In other round five games, Strathfieldsaye tackles Bendigo United, early season surprise pack-

Reigning champs East on a winning roll REIGNING premier Bendigo East remains on top of the Bendigo Bowls Division pennant ladder after a hard-fought win over Castlemaine last week by five shots. East takes on Inglewood this weekend in a bid to keep its undefeated run to start the season alive. East skipper Brad Holland is yet to lose a rink this season, while Paul Moller went down for the first time against the ‘Maine. Castlemaine’s loss saw it tumble out of the top four after Bendigo recorded a win over Eaglehawk to slide into fourth place. The number one rinks of Ian Ross and Tony Ellis played out a cracking contest all afternoon and at the end of play the two rinks

could not be separated at 24 shots apiece. Tim Arnold’s rink took a 12shot victory for Bendigo, Andrew Brown’s rink launched a barnstorming comeback to take a one-shot victory but Barry Anset went down to Simon Carter 24-31. Kangaroo Flat recorded a comfortable victory over bottom side South Bendigo and Inglewood was pushed all the way by Golden Square, with only four shots separating the two sides. This weekend’s matchups see Golden Square tackle South Bendigo, Bendigo East host Inglewood, Kangaroo Flat at home to Eaglehawk and Castlemaine travel to Barnard Street to take on Bendigo.

et Sandhurst looks to continue its good form against Huntly North Epsom, Golden Square is at home to Kangaroo Flat and White Hills hosts Bendigo in what promises to be a well-matched contest.

TOUR MISSES TOWN BENDIGO has missed out on hosting any part of the 2016 Jayco Herald Sun Tour after hosting stage finishes the past three years. The race, this year featuring Tour de France champion Chris Froome, begins in Melbourne on February 3 and travels around Gippsland before the traditional Arthurs Seat finish on February 7. Bendigo’s Tom Flood velodrome held a stage finish in 2013, with Pall Mall hosting climaxes each of the past two years.

SWIMMERS MAKE A SPLASH

CONCENTRATION: Eaglehawk went down to Bendigo.

Eguchi wins top prize Japan’s Misa Eguchi capped off a dominant week with victory in Sunday’s William Loud International Pro Tour final in Bendigo. Eguchi defeated compatriot Hiroko Kuwata 7-6, 6-3 to take the $50,000 title. In the Australian Wheelchair Championships final, Adam Kellerman defeated Ben Weekes 6-3, 6-0 in just over an hour to claim a place in the 2016 Australian Open.

FOR the fifth straight year local swimmers have put their talent on display in Melbourne finishing in second place in the Swimming Victoria Country 7-10 Encouragement Competition. Pitted against the best seven to 10-year-olds across regional Victoria, the representative squad of 37 did the District proud with stellar performances in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as freestyle and medley relays. Standout swimmers among the boys for the central Victoria squad were Echuca’s Nash Ramage and Angus Watson. Nine-year-old Nash won gold in the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle and silver in the butterfly while seven-year-old Angus took the gold in backstroke and freestyle and the silver in the breaststroke. Among the girls Bendigo East swimmers Lily-May Kirby and Lacey Wilkie stood out. Eight-year-old Lily-May won gold in freestyle while clubmate Lacey took home the silver in backstroke and freestyle.

KEY CLASH IN NUCA TOP side Bagshot takes on fourthplaced Elmore in this weekend’s round of Northern United Cricket Association action. Bagshot comes into the clash fresh off a big win over Heathcote, while Raywod defeated Goornong comfortably in round six. In other games, Dingee hosts Heathcote, Calivil makes the trek to M.J. Morgan Oval to face Colbinabbin and Goornong hosts local rivals Elmore. CHAMPIONS: Adam Kellerman and Misa Eguchi. Photos: ANDREW PERRYMAN

New plan needed IT is the oldest adage in any coaching manual – play consistently for four quarters – yet it seems to be one that Simon Pritchard’s Bendigo Spirit can’t quite grasp. Throughout Bernie Harrower’s tenure as Spirit coach, Bendigo had become famous for winning games after trailing at half time, turning in brilliant second half performances to dig themselves out of a first half hole. Unfortunately for Pritchard, the same first half holes still exist, but the results aren’t following. Bendigo gave up 54 first half points to Perth last Sunday, going on to lose 73-86. The Spirit got the deficit back to just two points during the third quarter but never led, and didn’t have enough energy left to hit the front after launching the stunning fightback. “We played a great second half, if we had played the game in reverse we might have won, but we didn’t bring the effort in the first half, and that’s on me,” Pritchard said. “In my discussions with the players this week we have to find

out why, and why they felt and acted that way, and what we can do to change it.” After years of pulling games out of the jaws of defeat, Pritchard said there are both positives and negatives to having a side that is comfortable being down early, and even late, in games. “The self confidence when you are down is great, that they don’t panic when they are down by a bit is the plus side of it for me as a coach,” he said. “The negative side of it is that seems like that is what it takes to motivate them, and that’s fools

gold for that to be the thing that motivates you. “I hope that is a pattern that isn’t going to continue. We certainly want to address that with better starts, particularly first quarters.” The Spirit, with a 5-4 record, face a key double-header this weekend when they takes on Melbourne (3-5) at the State Basket-

Despite the introduction of the metro leagues, the BFNL is still fixtured to play Gippsland for the fourth time in seven years – this time in Gippsland after the previous three matchups were at the QEO. The Loddon Valley will travel to Warrnambool to face the Warrnambool District, the HDFL tackles the Bellarine league, and the North Central only has a short trip to face the neighbouring Central Murray Football League. Thirty-eight leagues will compete in a series of one off head-to-head matches, played on the weekend of May 21 and 22. In the championships’ first year, leagues have been fixtured against each other in a manner which will assist in the official ranking of leagues for 2017 and beyond, according to AFL Victoria. Griffin the Aussie BENDIGO Spirit star Kelsey Griffin’s dream of becoming an Australian citizen is set to become a reality. The WNBL all-star will officially become an Australian citizen after the team’s clash with Dandenong on Sunday in a special post-game ceremony. The Weekly revealed Griffin’s desire to make Bendigo her home in October, 2013, and she said that she had submitted all the required paperwork when the Weekly again caught up with her in September. Now all that is left is the formalities, in a location the star forward chose herself. “The reason I chose to have the ceremony at the Bendigo Stadium is because I wanted a venue where anyone who wanted to be, could be, part of something so important to me,” she said. “The people of Bendigo, the city of Bendigo, and the Bendigo Bank Spirit have done so much for me and I felt it was the least I could do to offer a place where anyone who want-

The only thing that would make Australia even better is if my mum, dad, sister and brother were here. “Becoming a citizen is so important to me because I will no longer need to apply for visas to stay in the country that feels like home.” The ceremony will be held after Sunday’s game, which tips off at 2pm.

Teams face road trips By JOEL PETERSON

Kelsey’s special day THE Bendigo Stadium will host a ceremony with a difference this Sunday when Bendigo Spirit star Kelsey Griffin becomes an Australian citizen. Griffin has been planning to make Australia her home since she first got to Bendigo, and after Sunday’s game against Dandenong it becomes official. – Story Page 38

LEAGUES within the AFL Central Victoria hub have been told to hit the road in 2016 under AFL Victoria’s new Community Championships structure. AFL Victoria announced its new program this week, which sees the country and metro interleague championships combined into a football bonanza in May. AFL Central Victoria region general manager Paul Hamilton said this week that while he supports the concept, AFLCV is disappointed to have no home interleague games within the region. The Bendigo Football Netball League, along with the Loddon valley, Heathcote District and North Central leagues, will all play their interleague fixtures away from home next season. That leaves an empty Queen Elizabeth Oval on one of the biggest weekends of the season. “We are disappointed that there is no

home game among our leagues, I suppose we weren’t really involved in the discussions on that,” he said. “We end up having an empty QEO that weekend the way it’s panned out. I under-

It will be interesting to see how it plays out stand individually why it’s happened... but we would have loved to have at least one game in our reason.” Hamilton heads to Melbourne today to meet with AFL Victoria about a range of issues, and said that he will press the case that every hub in Victoria should host at least one home interleague game every year. “It will certainly be a discussion point for me, to say that in your planning, with things being commission-based

these days, every commission should have at least one home game within the region,” he said. Netball may also take a hit, with the metro leagues not aligned with both football and netball, along with changing junior structures. “I think it makes some sense, it will be interesting to see how it plays out, but I suppose it is a way of changing it up a bit so you don’t end up with the same leagues playing each other as has been the case with the BFNL,” Hamilton said. “One of the cons is the place of netball in the system, given the metro leagues aren’t football and netball leagues. “So I think from that perspective it’s a bit of a detriment in a way to what we’re used to, because we like to have the football and netballers all involved. Like everything, there are pros and cons.”
