Heritage focus for Bendigo

NAME GAME By PETER KENNEDY

ALL CHANGE: Ian Hart is leading Bendigo Heritage Attractions into the future.

Anzac Centenary Exhibition arrives – Page 7

THE Bendigo Trust has unveiled a new look and a new name as part a push to put a more vibrant and contemporary face to the heritage assets it supports and maintains on behalf of the community. Born out of the grass roots defiance of plans to remove the city’s iconic trams from their tracks more than 40 years ago, the Bendigo Trust will in future be known as Bendigo Heritage Attractions. Chief executive officer Ian Hart said the organisation would continue to provide authentic, interesting and fun experiences, which reflect the character, charm and personality of Bendigo and contribute to our community sense of place. “We have a grand vision for the continued upgrade and improvement of these important assets and believe with the right support they can become even more important to Bendigo’s identity, liveability and tourism appeal,” he said. Those plans include improvements to tours and displays at the Central Deborah, more frequent tram services, more themed trams based on events and other celebrations as well as the grand vision of a major upgrade of facilities above ground at the Central Deborah and two additional tram stops at the Sacred Heart cathedral and

Golden Dragon Museum. “We think the new message will assist in our visibility and resonate to the community and assist as part of our renaissance and we are calling on the community – both business and general public to come on board to support us through a variety of membership, sponsorship and other support packages and be proud of our city’s unique heritage we all own,” Mr Hart said.

“We have a grand vision for the continued upgrade” He said Bendigo has a unique history of which the gold mining era, the Chinese settlement connection and the 125 years of trams in Bendigo are at its essence and telling its stories and preserving our heritage should be dear to all of us. “Hence our mission to preserve, operate and showcase living heritage assets which enrich Bendigo’s cultural soul,” he said.

The Weekly look at the local real estate market

Sales on the rise

IT’S been a big year for the property market across the state with strong growth in sales activity in many areas of regional Victoria in the year to September 30. Total sales in regional Victoria increased 15 per cent over the year to 23,200 transactions, up from just over 20,200 sales for the same period last year. The Surf Coast Shire in the state’s south west recorded the highest increase in sales over the previous year, up more than 40 per cent to 482 sales. This was followed by the predominately rural municipality of Baw Baw, where sales volumes rose by more than 30 per cent to 746 sales. This was up from 571 sales in the previous year. Other municipalities recording significant increases in turnover include the City of La Trobe, up 20 per cent to 893 sales; Macedon Ranges, up 18.9 per cent to 585 sales; and Wellington Shire, up 18.3 per cent to 585 sales. The City of Greater Geelong had regional Victoria’s highest turnover in the 12 months to September 30, with almost 2700 sales. This was up 11.4 per cent on the same period last year when there were 2400 sales. High transaction levels were also seen in the City of Ballarat,

where more than 1700 homes were sold over the year. Sales volumes also rose in the City of Greater Bendigo, up 4.6 per cent over the same period last year to 1227 sales. And, while auction activity is highly publicised in Melbourne, private sale remains the most popular way to sell a home in Victoria. This is particularly the case in three regional centres – Ocean Grove, Mildura and Wodonga – where private sales were the preferred method of marketing homes for sale. In the year to September 30, more than nine out of 10 homes in these locations were sold by private sale, rather than auction. Of the 290 homes that sold in Ocean Grove over the year, almost 94 per cent of them were sold by private sale. Mildura in the state’s north west was also dominated by private sales with 526 homes, or 94 per cent, sold privately. Over the same period only 53 auctions were held in the town. Wodonga was another strong private sale performer with 92 per cent of the 239 homes sold over the year to September 30 being by private sale. Craig Webster, Chairman Bendigo, REIV

PEAK: 212,000 homes were started in 2014/15.

HIA SAYS PEAK IS NOW THE Housing Industry Association says new home building may well have reached the summit with a record 212,000 dwelling commencements in 2014/15. HIA chief economist, Dr Harley Dale, said 2015/16 will be another very healthy year for commencements – a peak in new home construction is usually followed by an abrupt decline. Dr Dale said renovations investment is forecast to grow by 3.7 per cent in 2015/16 following marginal growth – from a decade low – over the last two years. “Meanwhile the rate of growth in residential property prices has peaked, in our assessment, although for the roughly 60 per cent of the population living outside Sydney and Melbourne this has hardly been a housing boom,” he said. “As the focus – quite rightly – intensifies on the need for economic and taxation reform in Aus-

tralia it is imperative that policy makers recognise the importance of the residential construction industry.” “Residential construction is the second most heavily taxed industry in the Australian economy, to the detriment of the home ownership aspirations of many Australians.”

PUBLIC SPACE DEBATE WHAT are our best and worst public spaces in Greater Bendigo? This is one of the key questions to be tackled when the City of Greater Bendigo hosts an outdoor community forum at the Bendigo Library Gardens on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Feedback from the event will help to develop the Greater Bendigo Public Space Plan. Mayor Rod Fyffe encouraged people to attend, saying public open space is something that impacts on everyone.

MP calls for Serco jobs

FEDERAL member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters wants prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to revise the federal government’s plan to axe 50 local jobs, after Mr Turnbull this week told Parliament that he wanted “more jobs for Bendigo”. The prime minister made the comment whilst answering a question from Ms Chesters asking him to explain how a broadened GST would increase jobs. “If the PM commits to keeping these jobs, his claim for wanting ‘more jobs and more growth’ for Bendigo might seem

less insincere,” Ms Chesters said. “The ‘in-sourcing’ of over 50 Department of Education jobs from Bendigo’s Serco call centre is yet another round of federal government job cuts to hit our electorate since the Liberals came to power. “For the prime minister to declare in Parliament that he wants more jobs for Bendigo while local Serco workers are coming to terms with being unemployed in the new year demonstrates he either has no idea about what’s going on in Bendigo or empty rhetoric.

“We are talking about between 50 and 60 locals who have lost their job because of

sion to cease using the Bendigobased Serco call centre or at the very least guarantee future work

He ... has no idea about what’s going on in Bendigo this government. So for Mr Turnbull to stand there and claim his government cares about jobs for Bendigo is a joke.” Ms Chesters said the prime minister should reverse the deci-

for the workers in Bendigo. “What’s more, the prime minister once again failed to rule out increasing and broadening the GST and even conceded lower income families would

be hardest hit,” she said. “Shockingly, research released this week shows some Bendigo households are spending more than 50 per cent of their income on rent alone. “Job losses and a hike in the GST are just more signs this government is out of touch. “Getting rid of jobs and threatening to increase the GST is not going to convince the people of Bendigo that prime minister Turnbull and his government have any interested in creating jobs or growth for our town.”

NEW LOOK: Rod Fyffe and Paul Penna at the memorial hall.

Plans in the wings for memorial hall BENDIGO Soldiers Memorial Hall will undergo a $4.1 million upgrade to modernise the building with the inclusion of a state-of-the-art gallery. The City of Greater Bendigo voted in favour of contributing $800,000 towards the upgrade on Wednesday night, to get it “shovel ready” before seeking further funding. Council’s planning and development director Prue Mansfield said the works planned for the iconic Bendigo landmark, located on Pall Mall, were extensive.

“It’s a complete renewal of the original part of the building, and reorganisation of the interior,” she said. “It will actually take it back to be much truer to how it was when it was first built. “So taking the additions that have been added over the years – taking them and doing something that’s actually much more stylish which reflects the grandeur of the front part of the building.” The gallery will be built at the rear of the existing hall

following the removal of the 1934 fibro stage and toilet additions. It will be able to accommodate touring exhibitions from the War Memorial in Canberra, which mayor Rod Fyffe believed would be a fitting tribute to local diggers. Conservation works to the original building would include total roof replacement and new skylights. Other works would include upgrading exhibition spaces in the existing building, reinstatement of missing sections of the original ceiling and other plaster re-

pairs and painting. Hall Redevelopment Working Group chair Paul Penna said it was significant council had partnered with the Bendigo District RSL this year in support of the upgrade. “Our diggers from World War I, their families and the general community who raised the funds to construct this magnificent memorial would be well pleased to see the efforts being made by the city and the Bendigo District RSL to upgrade and expand upon this very special project,” he said.

THE Greens have named their candidate for Bendigo for next year’s federal election – French language teacher Rosemary Glaisher. Ms Glaisher, a Bendigonian for 23 years and a teacher at Girton Grammar School for 15, was named as the party’s federal candidate for Bendigo on Wednesday. The Liberal Party has yet to name a candidate for the Bendigo electorate after extending its deadline for preselection. Ms Glaisher called for more action on climate change, and described the Greens as being the true opposition to the Labor and Liberal parties. “I’m so proud to be standing with the Greens – they’re the only party with a real plan to tackle climate change,” she said. “I’m really proud of Bendigo, of our city in the forest. I’m aware that it’s under a number of threats and it needs to be protected.” She said she was also passionate about seeing Bendigo move on from the anti-mosque protests that have dominated headlines throughout this year. “The whole issue around the mosque, I feel very strongly about,” Ms Glaisher said. “Muslims have been part of Bendigo since the gold rush… they’re a very important and valued part of our community. “I think most of Bendigo is really welcoming of Muslims and the mosque. “I’m just really hoping that the time will come before too long, we’ll have a beautiful new mosque and the sky won’t have fallen in, and everybody

INSPIRED: Rosemary Glaisher. will get back to the normal, welcoming Bendigo that we are.” Ms Glaisher has a history of activism on environmental issues and social welfare, and said she was prompted to run for preselection after hearing former Greens leader Bob Brown talk. “I reached the stage where I realised that as an individual it’s really hard to make a difference, I felt that I could achieve more by being part of an organisation like the Greens whose philosophy and policies aligned completely with my own,” she said. “The final trigger was hearing Bob Brown’s speech at the Bendigo Writers Festival, and hearing him talk about how easy it is to be depressed by what is happening in the world, and the way you deal with that is you stand up and take action.” Ms Glaisher encouraged people to contact her via the Bendigo Greens facebook page.

Bus plan gathers speed

BENDIGO’s new bus network is finally on the way after more than a year of waiting for local commuters. The original plan was released in late November, 2014, and a spokesperson for public transport minister Jacinta Allan said this week that the plan will be made public “in the next couple of weeks”. The original proposal released last November was revised twice, and further community consultations were held in May to finalise the plan alongside the upcoming Bendigo Metro rollout. Ms Allan indicated in April that

Bendigo would see a new bus network by the end of the year. “The plan is for the new bus timetable to come into effect during 2015,” she told the Weekly. Local residents unimpressed with the original plan still have concerns including Mary Peel, who attended the community consultations. “They had professionally drawn plans and routes and consultative staff at all meetings, and nothing has happened,” she said. “The re-design of Mitchell Street continues, but bus users still have nowhere to sit to wait for the bus.” Under the proposed network

changes, every route would be renumbered, and a focus put on interconnectivity, with train services and building around transport hubs at Epsom, Eaglehawk and Bendigo station.

Strathfieldsaye was to see a major benefit, with more frequent services, but Junourton residents expressed concern that they were again left without a dedicated regular service.

They had professionally drawn plans and routes and ... staff at all meetings, and nothing has happened

Several direct services would be introduced, including a shuttle to La Trobe University and a direct Kangaroo Flat to Epsom route via the CBD, but areas such as Spring Gully were left high and dry.

By Joel Peterson

The state government released its report into community feedback sessions about the Regional Network Development Plan this week, with the feedback set to shape the plan’s final outcomes.

More frequent bus and trains services were a focus of respondents, as was service times being extended. “This has been the biggest community consultation on public transport ever undertaken in regional Victoria and I would like to thank the thousands of people who contributed their passion and ideas,” Ms Allan said. “The extensive feedback received will play a central role in developing Victoria’s first ever long term strategy for better regional public transport – the Regional Network Development Plan.”

White ribbons show support for cause MORE THAN 800 people marched in solidarity against family and domestic violence in Bendigo on Wednesday. The day marked White Ribbon Day, with school students, the army, emergency services and community groups all participating in the march. Federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters took the time in Federal Parliament to acknowledge victims of family violence. “Most of all I acknowledge

the women who have stood up and spoken out, who have ensured none of us forget the trauma they have faced,” she said. Local community leaders and sporting identities spoke out against family violence on Wednesday, calling for an end to victim blaming and inequality. schools, workplaces and across the wider community. Chair of White Ribbon Australia John Rosewarne said the group applauds communities across Australia who united on Wednesday in support of bringing an end to men’s violence against women. “It is everyone’s responsibility to make this happen,” he said. “We need ongoing action among our schools, workplaces, sporting clubs and politicians

if we are to become a society committed to respect, stopping the violence and delivering true gender equality.” Mr Rosewarne said all women should live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence. “Sadly, this is not the case. On average, more than one woman per week is killed by a current or former partner,” he said. For crisis support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

The new name and new look for one of the city’s most popular attractions coincides with celebrations planned for the 125th anniversary of trams in Bendigo during the first weekend of December, which coincides with the inaugural Vibrant Central Bendigo event celebrations. Mr Hart said Bendigo Heritage Attractions planned to light up the poppet head at the Central Deborah complex from dusk on Saturday, December 5 as part of a family Christmas celebration where there would also be carol singing, a brass ensemble, gold panning and gold pours, cage rides underground and a visit from Santa. There will also be free trams all day, running on a 20 minute schedule, with the community encouraged to get on board. On Sunday, December 6, there will be reduced prices for tram rides. Centenary celebrations for the Number Seven tram, a Bendigo Heritage Attractions restoration project, will also be held on the day, which coincides with the 43rd anniversary of the return of trams to Bendigo streets.

Festival fever MORE than 200 local retailers and businesses will take to the streets on December 5, when Bendigo’s inaugural Street Festival kicks off. Festival goers are being encouraged to “shop, explore, learn, taste and play” throughout central Bendigo’s different precincts, and enjoy the opportunity to get an early start on Christmas shopping. The precincts include High, View, Mitchell, Hargreaves and Williamson Streets, Bath Lane, and Pall Mall, with each precinct’s unique nature featured on the day. View Street champion Sue llen Tomamichel said the precinct would offer a range of

arts and entertainment, with artists, live music and food and wine tasting on offer during the festival. “Everybody has really participated so fantastically, all the traders have got on board,” she said of the View Street traders. “They’ve managed to work out what they’ve connected to – so some have found artists, some have found musicians. “We’ve got art work actually for sale and on display, we have musicians that will be either busking or just playing, we’ve managed to get a clown on stilts who will go around doing giant bubbles and balloons. “Santa will be here, sitting

in the portico of the Capital Theatre, and the kids will be able to have their photographs taken up there. “So there’s all sorts of activities that will be going all day. It will be a great, fun time to be in View Street.” Alongside a number of art exhibitions, Ms Tomamichel said there would be a focus on local produce. “We’ll have wine and food tastings, the promotion is for local produce,” she said. “So, the food will be local, the wines will be local, we’ve even got local beer at The Rifle.” Entry to the festival will be free, and will run from 11am to 9pm around the CBD.

New mayor takes helm

TOUR: Tim Fischer at the Spirit of Anzac Centenary exhibition.

Anzac link for Hawkei By LAURA HURLEY

FORMER deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer would like to see the Bendigo manufactured Hawkei renamed the Hawkei-Hamel if the military vehicles are sold to the United States defence forces. Visiting Bendigo earlier this week to preview the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience, Mr Fischer speculated about the likelihood of a thousand Hawkeis being sold to the United States Marines. “I have a tip that the Hawkei will be tailor-made to go to a thousand US Marines as a sale or-

der, part made here, part assembled in the USA, under Thales,” Mr Fischer said. “Which is an interesting prospect. If they’re going to do that, what might get it over the line would be to rename it in accordance with traditions here – the Hamel. “Why? Because as this exhibition affirms, that was the first time 1000 Yanks and 7000 Australians fought together under John Monash in the successful Battle of Hamel, July 4 1918 in France. “Let’s consider the prospect of selling a thousand Hawkei

Hamels to the US Marines.” The Vietnam veteran and Aspire Foundation patron urged local residents to visit the exhibition, which opened at Bendigo Showgrounds yesterday. “This is a splendid salute to the rich military tradition of Bendigo – a hundred years ago hundreds signed up around Bendigo and the Greater Bendigo area to go to World War I as volunteers,” Mr Fischer said. “And here we are with the crown jewels of the Australian War Memorial, and much more.” The exhibition closes in Bendigo on Wednesday, and

with a number of artefacts from the Australian War Memorial as well as local paraphernalia from Bendigo’s military history, Mr Fischer said it was the last opportunity to see the exhibition in regional Victoria. “This is bigger and better than ever,” he said. “It has more of the local flavour. From the assistance of the Bendigo RSL, right through to the last shell fired at the Gallipoli campaign, and that’s almost a hundred years ago next month.” To book tickets, or for more information, visit www.spiritofanzac.gov.au

Central location a winner for city library VISITOR numbers to the revamped Bendigo library soared more than 60 per cent in 2014/15 as residents continued to embrace the new look and expanded library. The Goldfields Library Corporation annual report tabled at this week’s City of Greater Bendigo council meeting show there were more than 450,000 visits to the central library during 2014/15, up

from 278,680 the previous year. Patronage of the main library has more than doubled in the past two years, as visitor numbers rose from 218,659 in 2012/13 to the 450,794 recorded last year. But it’s not all good news for the Goldfield Library Corporation, with visitor numbers to several smaller libraries plummeting over the past 12 months. Heathcote’s recorded visitor

numbers have fallen from 20,141 in 2012/13 to 11,554 in 2014/15, a decrease of almost 43 per cent in two years, while at Kangaroo Flat the number of people visiting the library fell from 97,508 two years ago to 75,718 last year as the new look Bendigo library attracted people back to the heart of the city. The renovated and expanded Bendigo library was re-opened

in January 2014, after about $9.5 million was spent rejuvenating the facility. Capitalising upon its location in the middle of the city, the library now offers vastly improved access from the street, better links with both the town hall and the retail centre, with a focus on community activity and meeting rooms that have helped draw more visitors to the facility.

IT was almost business as usual at Wednesday night’s City of Greater Bendigo council meeting, with the public gallery allowed upstairs for the first time since the September 16 meeting. A small police presence was in attendance as anti-mosque protesters made their presence known, with two men in burkas, another in a koala costume and woman in a motorbike helmet holding signs calling for the sacking of council’s chief executive, directors and number of councillors. The meeting was the first this year chaired by new mayor Rod Fyffe. Councillors unanimously endorsed plans for a $4 million refurbishment of the Soldiers Memorial Hall on Pall Mall, which will be made “shovel ready” before seeking funding from the state and federal governments. Councillor Peter Cox, who Cr Fyffe welcomed “back to the fray”, expected the plans would receive wide support from the community. “This is a project that the whole of the community will support,” Cr Cox said. The meeting also saw council step towards another Councillor Conduct Panel after the tabling of another failed mediation process between Cr Cox and councillors Helen Leach and Elise Chapman. The mediation, which took place on November 16, dealt with a number of incidents where councillors Leach and Chapman allege Cr Cox breached the Councillor Code of Conduct. Following the failed mediation, both Cr Leach and Cr Chapman indicated their intention to pursue their complaints through a request for a Councillor Conduct Panel. Tensions eased somewhat during discussion around pet management, with the draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 20162020 released this week. The report discusses the need for two additional off-leash dog parks within the city, however rejects extending the sunrise to sunset cat curfew to 24 hours. When discussing nature of cat ownership and the level of devotion cat owners have for their feline friends, Cr Leach shed some light onto the true nature of a cat-human relationship as “usually the cats own the people”. Cr Cox voiced his support of a 24 hour cat curfew, leading to some of the meeting’s most robust discussion which councillor Barry Lyons suggested had “opened a can of worms”. “I don’t think worms have to be registered,” Cr Cox said.

Spotlight on arson BUSHFIRE arson has come under the spotlight again after Crime Stoppers launched an awareness campaign earlier this week to stamp out deliberately lit fires around Bendigo. The summer outlook for the 2015-16 bushfire season indicates a significantly increased risk of fire activity across the state, following warmer and drier than normal conditions. Reckless fire and arson are attributed as being the cause of more than 50 per cent of all bushfires across the country, with 1444 suspicious fires and almost 400 people charged for arson-related offences in Victoria during the 2013-14 bushfire season. Crime Stoppers Victoria commu-

nity manager Peter Brown said Victoria has one of the highest bushfire risks on earth. “The summer outlook is for significantly increased fire activity in Victoria, with the state having already experienced some serious bushfires,” Mr Brown said. “A large number of bushfires in Victoria could be prevented if people did not engage in reckless conduct, such as lighting a fire on a total fire ban day, using machinery in a reckless manner or not properly extinguishing a campfire. “Preventing bushfires is everyone’s responsibility, and reckless fires cost lives. “We are asking local residents

Site set for Tech

A GROUP working on a plan to establish a multi-million dollar technical school in Bendigo is expected to reveal details of the preferred site within weeks. Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards said students in Bendigo would have access to the stateof-the-art school when the centre opens by 2018. The state government will invest $125 million to create 10 high tech centres of learning at TAFEs and university campuses across the state, including Bendigo, that will use leading-edge technology to deliver advanced skills and training. The 10 schools will be shared learning centres for government and non-government secondary school students who will visit the tech schools from their existing schools. Ms Edwards said she was thrilled to be working with local

schools, industry partners, TAFE and universities to deliver a tech school for Bendigo by 2018. “Tech schools will use leading-edge technology, discovery and innovation to deliver our students new skills, insights and ways of working which will be crucial for the jobs of the future,” she said. Each tech school would be unique, shaped by local stakeholders and school communities, and specialising in specific industries. A working party with members from local schools, industry, TAFEs and universities and led by Ms Edwards will be finalising site selection in the coming weeks. Robotics entrepreneur Marita Cheng has been announced as the Tech School Ambassador. Ms Edwards said the former Young Australian of the Year’s passion for science and engineer-

ing makes her a perfect ambassador for the new program which aims to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The concept is an election commitment first unveiled by then opposition leader Daniel Andrews in October 2014, with plans to include tech schools at Gippsland, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Monash, Casey, Wyndham, Banyule, Yarra Ranges and the Whittlesea regions. The government said students will spend a set period of time getting a technical education while maintaining enrolment at their local secondary school – not in place of a comprehensive education, but as part of it, while local industries will work with TAFEs and universities to design tech school courses, so they can get the workers and skills they need.

Bush Heritage regional manager Jeroen van Veen said the purchase of five additional units will allow his organisation to increase the number of volunteers working at one time. “Most people think of the prickly pear when they think of cactus invasion,” Mr van Veen said. “The weed we are dealing with is the wheel cactus which is prevalent in the north central region of Victoria.

“We have been concentrating on 12,000 hectares of land in the Wedderburn area. “The spear gun injects the cactus with herbicides which has proven to be an effective method of eradication.” Living Together director Karen Corr said their project is aimed at connecting several community organisations who will be working towards embracing diversity during Multicultural Week.

ROADSIDE CAR SALES ILLEGAL RESIDENTS are being reminded it is illegal to offer vehicles for sale on the side of the road, road reserves and nature strips amidst concerns for road safety. City of Greater Bendigo Environmental Health and Local Laws Manager, Susannah Milne said the vehicles can be a traffic hazard, cause traffic congestion and can be a distraction for drivers. “Police are also concerned unattended vehicles, left in locations for a period of time, may provide an opportunity for people to break in and steal goods,” she said. “So while it might be tempting to display vehicles close to events, the city and police will take appropriate action where problems are created for other road users.”

The stars are gathering THE Bendigo Weekly-Prime 7 backed Sports Star of the Year awards will be announced at a glittering black tie dinner to be held at the All Seasons Quality Resort on Friday, February 26, 2016. The awards are the longest running event of their type in regional Australia, and in more recent times have grown to include two important announcements for junior athletes via the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund and the Maxine Crouch Trust Fund. These highly acclaimed awards are an opportunity to recognise the young and rising stars in the Bendigo area, and to help them be the best they can. It’s also a chance to demonstrate to the wider community the extent of the young talent in our region and to celebrate the sporting achievements and endeavours of all sportspeople in the region. The Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund recognises a young male sports star between the ages of 14 and 25. The award is named after former Bendigo Advertiser editor Cyril Michelsen MBE, a man whose passion for sport and his community is the stuff of legends. Mr Michelsen was a foundation member of the Sports Star Awards in 1965, and of the Bendigo Sportsmen’s Association as well. Former winners of the Cyril Michelsen Trust include golfer Lucas Herbert, cyclists Robert Burns and Glenn O’Shea, yachtsman Glenn Ashby, athlete Tim Driesen and rower Jason Day. The Maxine Crouch Trust Fund for young female athletes was first presented to in 2001-02, where Skye

Ms Crouch was also President of the association in 1993/94 and 1994/95 and was at all times a proud and passionate supporter of female athletes. It’s market time THE Zonta Club of Bendigo will hold its popular Christmas Market tomorrow at the Bendigo Club in Strathdale. Around 35 stallholders will have a diverse range of wares on offer, giving market goers the opportunity to beat the rush and get in early with a little Christmas shopping. Organiser Raelene Schmidt said funds raised from the would go Annie North women’s refuge and domestic violence services.

This year Zonta has supplied the refuge with considerable quantity of bedding, and has also set aside funds for counselling, kitchen packs and video conferencing links with court to be installed in the refuge currently under construction. A raffle and a silent auction will also be ran throughout the day. The market will run from 10.30am to 3pm, with a gold coin donation for entry.

Joint effort on food BENDIGO Foodshare has partnered with National Australia Bank to teach Eaglehawk Primary School students about fresh food and healthy eating. As part of NAB’s staff volunteering program, two staffers from the bank attend Eaglehawk Primary School every Monday to assist with the cooking classes. Foodshare operations manager Ray Butler said the food used in the classes came from Foodshare in part, as well as fresh pro-

duce grown by the students in their own garden. He said the program, still in its infancy, was to encourage and teach healthy eating habits in school as well as give Foodshare’s corporate partners a chance to see how the organisation works at a grass roots level. “We regularly have NAB volunteers in our warehouse,” Mr Butler said. “We wanted to look further afield, people wanted to see and follow the food, that there’s so many schools

and emergency relief centres that could benefit from having regular volunteers. “A percentage of the food that is here is provided by us, the rest is grown in the wonderful Strath-Alexander Garden. “So it’s a great opportunity for our corporate peers to actually see what happens to food, so the idea is they get a better understanding of where the food goes.” He said there were plans to expand the program into other schools in the future.

Eaglehawk Primary School’s Leesa Caddaye said the cooking program was important to foster healthy habits in the students. “It’s important they learn things like cooking, basic things that they might do at home,” she said. “And the garden, they all go out there and plant, harvest and pick the things we need for cooking. They learn cleaning up, the importance of being clean... and then at the end we all sit down and eat together.”

Bendigo Weekly – Friday, November 27, 2015

A walk in the park

founder: Stephanie Woolard.

A REPORT recommending in-principle support for establishing two new dog parks in Bendigo was considered by the City of Greater Bendigo Council this week. The draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2016-2020 notes that exercising dogs is vital for their health, stating, “increasing the opportunities for owners to provide their dogs with sufficient exercise, stimulation and socialisation for mental wellbeing can in turn reduce behaviours such as barking, wandering and aggression.” The plan also cites the growing level of pet ownership is creating a stronger need for people to be able to access local areas and exercise and socialise their dogs freely and responsibly. Councillor Rod Campbell threw his support behind the proposed parks and said the city’s current offleash dog park in Strathdale had been beneficial for dog owners. “Success breeds success,” he said. A recent survey by council of 643 residents found only 20 per cent of the population do not support dog parks. The survey also suggested 67 percent of respondents believe dogs should be leashed at all times, except when in designated dog park areas. Several other issues are also considered in the draft plan including requiring dogs to be on a leash at all times, extending the current sunrise to sunset cat curfew to a 24-hour curfew, undertaking a pet expo and continuing with dog and cat de-sexing and micro-chipping incentives.

Doco subject in town for viewing Seven Women Founder, Stephanie Woollard, will be attending the documentary about her work at the Star Cinema this Sunday, November 29. The Eaglehawk Rotary Club has arranged the event to inform local people of Stephanie’s remarkable achievements. Her award winning social enterprise develops shelters in Nepal for abused women and single mothers. The shelters teach women practical and production skills such as sewing and growing their own vegetables. Other programs include literacy classes, money management training and business classes. Stephanie founded the Seven Women enterprise in 2006 after she visited Nepal and met

seven women who were making soaps and candles to sell in the local market. Because these women suffered from disabilities they were stigmatised and living in extreme poverty. The plight of these seven women was the impetus for Stephanie to start her social enterprise. Since then Stephanie has trained and employed more than 1000 disadvantaged women. The Seven Women documentary will be screened at the Star Cinema at 2.30pm on Sunday. Stephanie will be speaking and answering questions too. Afternoon tea will be available. Cost is $15. Bendigo Weekly – Friday, November 27, 2015

The end of an era COMMUNITY members will be given the opportunity to reminisce at the Bendigo Early Learning Centre during a family fun day to be hosted on December 5 before the closure of the centre. Activities on the day will include a petting zoo, face painting, balloons, music, jumping castle, photo booth and giant games starting from 10am, with official proceedings starting at noon. The centre first opened its doors in 1945 at a time when, according to City of Greater Bendigo wellbeing director Pauline Gordon, people were critical of the idea of childcare centres. “It was also opened at a

time when there were likely none, or few, childcare options outside of the Melbourne area,” Ms Gordon said. Ms Gordon said the closure marks the end of an era. “Over the past 70 years the centre has educated many thousands of children and has been the workplace of numerous staff members,” she said. “There is no doubt it holds special memories for many in our community and anyone interested is encouraged to attend the family fun day and bid the centre a fond farewell.” Following the centre’s closure, the council will seek expressions of interest for the building’s renewal and reuse.

Institute renewed

UPGRADE: The California Gully Mechanics institute. THE California Gully Mechanics Institute is sporting a new look following a $240,000 upgrade. The building in School Street, California Gully dates back to 1853 and is owned by the City of Greater Bendigo council and managed and used by the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk. Council’s Andy Walker said the upgrade shows how the council works with local groups to deliver projects that protect heritage buildings, while providing important facilities for the community. “This is one of many examples where the council is working to adapt buildings so they can be used by the community.

The appeal, now in its 28th year, has seen more than six million gifts donated to those in need

nation wide. Kmart Kangaroo Flat store manager, Anthony Clark said it is the longest running Christmas appeal in Australia. “It’s great for needy kids and families doing it rough,” he said. In 2014, 1419 gifts were donated at the Kangaroo Flat store,

with more than 390,000 donated across all stores, nationwide. The gifts, collected each week by the Salvation Army will go to both children and adults in need. “We’d like to encourage the local Bendigo community to come out and make a donation,” Mr Clark said.

Ease your BMX ride comfort TRY an experiment. Borrow a BMX bike and pedal it up and down your street. You’ll probably find it very hard work and, even over a short distance, some leg muscles will complain. That’s because the seat is too low for the powerful muscles in your thighs to work efficiently. Many recreational cyclists are working too hard because their seats are too low. Getting your seat height right can alleviate pain and help you pedal more efficiently. Even if you’re just cruising the bike path on a Sunday afternoon, you want to get the most power for effort from your body. Think of your heart and lungs as your bike’s motor and your legs as the

machinery that transfers power to the wheels. If they can’t stretch out far enough then you’re making life hard for yourself. So, how high should it be? One guide is 96 per cent of your leg length. Measure your leg length in two sections: from the outward bump on your hip to the middle of your knee, then from your knee to the middle of your ankle. Add these together and multiply by 0.96. Next add an allowance for the soles of the shoes you usually wear. Now you’re ready to transfer the measurement to your bike. Arrange your downward pedal so the crank arm is in line with your seat tube. Measure from the top of your saddle to the top of your pedal. That distance should

be the same as the one you just calculated. There are other guides. With the heel of your foot on the pedal, your leg should be fully extended. Or try setting it up so both toes just skim the ground together when you’re sitting on your seat. If you need to raise your seat, do you make the change all at once or in small steps? Listen to your body. Try the new height. It will feel odd at first, but you will get used to it. If it causes you pain, though, drop it again and raise it in stages. This gives the leg muscles that have been cramped up time to stretch slowly. If it all just feels wrong, ask an experienced cyclist for help. They’ll

Other examples include the Eaglehawk Town Hall precinct and the external repairs and painting of the Allingham Hall in Golden Square,” Mr Walker said. Works at the institute included constructing a new external access point, replacing windows, new storeroom, carpet and vinyl and a new link at the rear of the building. This provided an updated social area and includes new male and female toilets, including an all-abilities amenity. “The design of the extension is complementary to the heritage nature of the existing building, but still provides a point of difference by using recycled brick,” Mr Walker said.

understanding of law, procedure and effective corporate governance. Instead, it is the job of councils to make their policies into the corporate point of view. This requires care, intelligence, and a good understanding of the separation of powers. I agree with Howard et al that many councillors don’t have these qualities. Stephen Carthew, Harcourt North

Prime minister Turnbull sincerely declares that “real men don’t hit women”. If Mr Turnbull is serious about addressing the scourge of violence against women and children in our communities, then he and his predominantly male government must also realise that “real men” don’t cut funding to front-line services which save women’s and children’s lives. In the May 2015 federal budget, crisis and homelessness accommodation, counselling hotlines, men’s behavioural-change programs, community legal centres, primary prevention initiatives and services for culturally diverse and indigenous communities were either ignored, or had their funding significantly cut or discontinued. Federal minister for social services, Christian Porter, needs to ensure that the chronic under-funding of family violence response services is reversed in the next federal budget. Until peak body organisations such as Domestic Violence Victoria no longer have to mount a yearly fight to extend insecure, inadequate and short-term funding arrangements, in addition to struggling to meet a fraction of the needs of women attempting to flee domestic violence, the PM’s fine words will ring hollow. Women and children will continue to be brutalised and murdered, and little will change regardless of White Ribbon Day. Michelle Goldsmith, Eaglehawk

Pruning action needed I have just read Bill Colliers’ frustration re footpath repair request and would like him to know he is not alone. On February 25, 2015 I submitted a tree pruning request via the Bendigo council web site which was lodged and a 28 day action was noted (the said offending branch is obstructing footpath access). Further emails were lodged but as to date, some 265 days later, the offending branches are getting bigger and no trimming has taken place. I have been led to believe that the tree has been inspected and the trimming was all go – no action. I even offered to remove the offending branches myself – you can’t do that – so all things considered I have come to the conclusion that council is either too busy, too tired, can’t be bothered or the whole deal is too hard and no one is game to make a decision. Dave Bourke, Kangaroo Flat

Units not for the needy

Councils and councillors

I was concerned when I read and heard reports that many regional Victorians are suffering “rental stress” and why our local member has been so quiet regarding this matter. During the final stages of the Rudd, Gillard, Rudd government the Labor party at the direction of deputy leader Tanya Plibersek devised a scheme to help low income earners to get affordable rental accommodation, it was called the National Rental Affordability Scheme with a $3.5 billion price tag. Only 26,000 of these accommodation units were built before the coalition government scrapped the scheme. Many of the accommodation units built provided low cost, tax payer subsidised, accommodation to wealthy overseas students and not low income needy Australians. What Lisa Chesters has to answer are why are so many of her constituents suffering “rental stress” at a time when billions of dollars of tax payers money has been squandered providing cheap accommodation to wealthy Chinese students. She cannot blame the China Australia Free Trade Agreement because this agreement was not signed

I weigh in to the debate on councils and councillors as a former mayor and councillor (Mount Alexander Shire) with interest in Bendigo and the region. A directly elected mayor brings the double mandate problem: elected councillors bring mandates from their wards, while a mayor elected by the entire electorate can argue that the office has a grander mandate from the whole municipality. A power relationship arises between the parties that is all but absent in the current setup. It is unnecessary, and, depending on personalities, can lead to domination by the council of one set of views, policies, and actions. In Queensland where this happens, council activities are far more Politicised (note capital) than needs to be the case. It can cause disaffection among councillors, and dysfunction in the council as a public body. The suggestion that councillors should have their own policy secretariats and budgets to somehow counteract the “corporate point of view” (Alan Howard, Letters, November 20) demonstrates shallow

and the MRAS devised by a Labor government. Like so many Labor schemes, what looks like a great social idea at the time turns out to be a disaster, because as usual it was rushed and the checks and balances were missing. At least there were no lives lost with this scheme unlike the pink batts, another hastily put together publicity grabbing scheme put into action before the correct procedures had been put in place. Does Ms Chesters agree with her deputy leader that building just 26,000 out of an estimated 50,000 units with around 11,000 of those completed going to rich overseas students was a success? Large property investors get a tax payer subsidised tax incentive and wealthy overseas students get subsidised accommodation, this at a time when the Labor party says tax the rich. Is this an example of how the ALP including Ms Chesters intend to look after Australian low income earners should they again be trusted with the public purse? D Arscott, Kangaroo Flat

Speeding worries It’s 8.35am, a beautiful Friday morning, I’m driving along past Lake Weeroona. On entering the left lane, I can see a small black car in my rear view mirror, it’s approaching at a great speed. I notice a young woman at the wheel, I then watch her speed through two school zones, Weeroo-

the community, over the long-term interests of certain groups of private citizens. Our council is acting like a former Romanian ruler who constructed a 40,000 watt chandelier in his palace, built at a time when the state was delivering regular electricity black-outs. (Big-ticket items at the expense of citizens’ interests). Councillors have to learn that democracy emerges as a result of a pact or compromise between different groups of citizens. A dictatorship or commissioners could and do resolve such conflicts in the name of economic efficiency, but the smooth running or functioning of a modern economy depends on the willingness of its many interdependent social components to work together. We have yet to see this council achieve that. If there is no trust in the system, there will be no active and enthusiastic cooperation as required to make the system function smoothly, and to spread costs of growth evenly so that no one sector will bear them unduly. For all the hype of our council officers, it is to be noted that the latest Financial Review Smart Investor magazine report on “The best 625 suburbs – postcodes you can count on as the market shifts gear” does not include the City of Greater Bendigo or any of its suburbs. Does this mean we are over-priced or it is too expensive to live here? Will those responsible for raising the rates by six per cent per annum still be here when the citizens cannot afford to pay their rates? Bill Collier, Golden Square

na College and Holy Rosary at what I would estimate was more than double the speed limit. As a road user with more than 30 years’ driving experience I am appalled with what I have been witnessing lately with young drivers in and around Bendigo. I am even more concerned this young lady was totally oblivious to the fact that she was speeding through school zones, only to then have to wait at the red traffic lights at Howard Street. I have found over the past year or so nearly every vehicle that has overtaken me while I was travelling at the speed limit has been a P Plate driver, more disappointedly, most have been drivers on red Ps. They seem totally oblivious to their excessive speeds which are putting their own lives and other road users at risk, not to forget they are breaking the law. Epsom Primary School on Howard Street is a prime example, vehicles continually speed during school zone hours and throughout the whole day, young children are just metres away, a fatality just waiting to happen. These areas must be policed more often, police need to be harsher on these speeding drivers. We all deserve to use the roads with safety. James Carter, Epsom

ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE

editorial

Trust in our heritage This city is so blessed to have so much of what it has, much of it what others can only long to have. Whether it’s the amazing streetscapes, the beautiful parks and gardens, the new hospital project, Bendigo Bank, fast train service, improved Calder Freeway, the new library, the art gallery, Ulumbarra Theatre, the trams, the Shamrock, the Central Deborah or whatever else it is we all like and love about Bendigo. Despite this, we have still lost so much and the benefit of hindsight only makes any interested observer shudder that so much of this city’s incredible past was destroyed, replaced or lost not by fire, flood or disaster but by decisions of people who at the time thought they were doing what was best for Bendigo. Progress will always be inevitable and it will always have its price, but we must be vigilant of the need to acknowledge we are

Editorial Comment but the caretakers of our history. Today’s announcement that the Bendigo Trust has developed a new name and a new look is not as important as the affirmation that the organisation is also embarking on a renewed focus to improve what it has to offer both visitors to our city and locals alike. Looking ahead, the new look Bendigo Heritage Attractions seems to have its house in order at a favourable time, with the prospect of a federal election looming some time likely in the second half of 2016.

Being able to articulate your priorities early, clearly and precisely is never so important as it is in times like these. Our city has been blessed to receive very generous government support at both the state and federal level in recent times, and the reported approximately 1.3 per cent margin in the federal seat of Bendigo means we should continue to do so. The city’s wish list of priorities and projects it would like to see supported by the federal government, whichever party it may be, is rapidly taking shape, and Bendigo Heritage Attractions is likely to be moving up that list. That’s good news for the organisation, its supporters and for those of us in Bendigo who genuinely believe we are lucky to have so much of what we do, and that it should be protected, supported and enhanced for the future benefit of Bendigo.

In praise of our pets PETS are big business in Australia, and it turns out, we are one of the biggest lovers of household pets of any country on the planet. The RSPCA claims almost two thirds of Australian households own pets, with about 40 per cent of households owning a dog. Approximately 30 per cent of homes enjoy owning a cat, while it’s a long way back to guinea pigs, budgies, horses etc. Incredibly, pets were an integral part of childhood for more than 83 per cent of Australians, while of those Australians who are unfortunate enough to, or who are unable to currently own a pet, more than half of them would like to do so in the future. If you have a pet, then you know why this is so. We all know that cute pet pics and videos are among the most watched and loved on the internet, a further indication of how just much we all love our furry friends. Our pets become part of the family as we grow and they

popular: Pet ownership has benefits. are very much loved additions to the household that enrich the lives of those they share their time with. So when our own City of Greater Bendigo starts debating the rules around responsible pet ownership, we should all take notice, especially if the discussion is to lead to change. Thankfully, the draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2016-2020 considered by

councillors this week recommends against a 24-hour cat curfew, arguing it would be difficult to enforce. It would also result in significant resourcing costs to council, as well added costs for owners, many of whom are pensioners. Owning a pet is proven to provide significant health and social benefits to family members and individuals who may otherwise be on their own. Embedded in some of the commentary provided by council’s own staff in response to suggested changes to the existing policy is one poignant line that cannot be allowed to pass without comment. Essentially, it says given the expected changes to council operations once the rates cap is implemented, it would be difficult to do more with less, so some things just cannot be changed. It might be just one line, but it says a lot more. – and that’s a topic for another day. twitter@peterkennedy23 pk@bendigopublishing.com

BENDIGO

A moving experience

bookclub

All is dust and muddle as the Weekly moves

T

HE Bendigo Weekly is moving offices. From December 7 we will be in our swish new location at 37 to 39 View Street. It’s two doors down from the Wine Bank and in the general vicinity of many eating and drinking houses. My guess is some staff will have to have GPS trackers on them to find them when they stray for too long. I of course will be easy to find, I will be hiding at The Rifle. It’s a two minute and 49 second walk door to door, and that’s at a gentle pace. Coming back is all downhill too. Shopping will be a bonus as everything is so close. I might even get more visitors. The thing about moving is the packing. Our whole world is a swirl of boxes and packing materials and of course it’s all getting to be a bit close. We moved about five years ago, and some are still discovering drawers and boxes that have not been unpacked yet. The good thing about those boxes is deciding whether they are needed is easy. Have we used it in five years? No. Do we need it? No.

No worries E

It’s amazing what will pile up in a workplace. Some people at the Weekly like to keep a reference copy of each paper they have worked on. That alone is more than 250 copies in Old Nick’s case. I reckon he keeps them so he can snuggle in for his Poppy nap of an afternoon. I have aimed to keep the workplace light, and will be able to move with a box of important items. Most of it is small and easily managed, I believe in travelling light. Most of us have moved at some point, and I have done a

few major treks including two migrations from England and one return trip. There’s nothing to make you realise how much rubbish you move around until you have to pay for space on a shipping container. What’s more it takes so long to arrive you have forgotten what you had or needed to buy new anyway. I guess we could all look at having fewer items to haul around. The long-suffering Mrs Kendall is pretty good at thinning out posessions, sometimes without my knowledge,

but she does have a weakness... animals. We have 95 sheep, dogs, horses and hens, and the number is growing. Can’t imagine the horrors of moving that lot on our trailer. But I don’t think I am in a rush to move again for a while, all the fuss at the Weekly is reminding me of the horrors of relocation. Thankfully we will have the pros in to move us. Either that or we’ll have to wake up old Nick to shuffle around with a few boxes. - Steve Kendall Twitter@stevekendall1

ACH day people of all ages have to deal with what local author Tanya Balcke depicts as a purple monster which sometimes sits on your shoulder – worry. Her children’s book, I Have a Worry addresses the issue of anxiety or “worry” in young people and aims to make sense of that purple monster for them. Balcke largely succeeds in doing this through the use of authentic descriptions of some of the “worries” that children have shared with her during her years as a primary school teacher. Throughout, the book is also filled with Balcke’s simple and colourful illustrations of these “worries” which children are sure to enjoy looking at. Careful thought has also been put into the depiction of the main character, who is clearly gender neutral, meaning both young boys and girls will be able to relate to it. The easily accessible language also means children will be able to flip through the book with their parents without too much difficulty. While the book addresses a serious issue it does so in a way which is sure to enlighten and educate children and enable them to start a conversation with their parents about their “worries”. - Brylie Harris

A relaxed approach to art T

HE definition of Atelier is a room or studio in which an artist works. So it is more than apt that the name given to the current exhibition running at Dudley House has been given that title. The 10 artists who are exhibiting in the Atelier exhibition have had the privilege of working under the guidance of Karen Ward. A former lecturer at La Trobe and Victoria University and the winner of the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Prize, Dr Ward

provides classes for artists who aren’t seeking formal qualifications but rather less formal lessons tailored to their particular needs. The art works of mixed mediums are an example of the eclectic mix of visions and aspirations of the students. Student Heather Bradley said Karen had provided herself and the other students with the skills and confidence to grow as artists. “The atmosphere in the classes

is non-competitive and we have had a fantastic time, basically bridging the gap in our knowledge,” she said. “The classes are small and are conducted on a one-on-one basis, so I have been able to accommodated individuals in pursuing their own unique creative interests,” Dr Ward added. Atelier will be running at Dudley House, View Street until November 29, 11am to 4pm. Art works are for sale.

Motorcyclists back on the toy run M

EMBERS of the Allies Motorcycle Club of Bendigo are again busy organising the annual Bendigo Motorcycle Toy Run, to be held Saturday, December 5. Previous toy runs have resulted in more than $50,000 of Christmas cheer being distributed to families in need throughout the community. Organisers are hoping for more than 200 bikers to meet at Lansell Square in Kangaroo Flat at 8am, before heading down the Calder

Highway to Castlemaine and returning to Bendigo for a barbecue and fundraising auction at the rowing club rooms at Lake Weeroona. “All motorcyclists are welcome to come along,” Allies committee member Bob Garritty said. “Donations are either raffled or handed directly to St Vincent De Paul who distribute the cash as IGA food vouchers to needy local families. They also distribute all the toys we collect.”

Donations can also be left at Matheson’s barber shops in Bendigo and Golden Square. Members of the Allies will be in Hargreaves Mall the Saturday before the Toy Run seeking further donations and selling raffle tickets for a donated champagne Argyle diamond. The public are encouraged to attend both the auction, raffle draw and family barbecue from noon at Lake Weeroona.

cDonald’s Bendigo and Bendigo Volkswagen are delighted to be providing a brand new Volkswagen Jetta to a local Bendigo family. Laura McLean stopped at the local Bendigo store with her new baby Brady, to grab a quick dinner for her and her husband, Joel. As part of the famous McDonalds Monopoly competition, Laura received a monopoly ticket with her purchase and on opening it, she was shocked to read she had won a new car! When she first peeled the sticker she received on purchase of a drink, Laura said “I didn’t believe it, our luck is never that good”! She waited for Joel to return from cricket training and when they entered the ticket onto the McDonalds website, they realised they really had won a car! Bendigo Volkswagen have the pleasure in delivering the vehicle to the McLean’s, with the couple taking home a brand new Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI Trendline, 7 speed DSG, valued at $ 27,290. The car will become their new family car and selling their old car will allow them to put money towards the new home they are building next year.

review Stories from the ’front

Clog dancing on O

NE of the numerous members of the Sandhurst Ethiopian Serenaders (SES) was a clog dancer named E McGuinness. Mr McGuinness had been with the SES since the start of this group of amateur artists, and had built his reputation dancing wearing wooden heeled clogs which for all appearances seemed a little like riding boots. These clogs were specifically made in Bendigo to suit the feet of the dancer. In 1881 there were two occasions the SES put on their charitable performances, one being to raise money for the hospital through the Easter Fair. This was a performance that had farces, songs, acts and dances which of course included Mr McGuinness. The second performance that year was tendered for Nathaniel Hallas’s Band, Mr McGuinness again featured in the program. The SES in 1889 had the Royal Princess Theatre as a venue, a variety of acts was presented to an almost capacity audience. Mr Kow-ans Orchestra helped to support the SES on this particular occasion. Very favourable comments were made about Mr McGuinness as his dance was so good that he was requested to do an encore. Another orchestra numbering 20 players were the pupils of J A Butler, their performance also drew positive comments from the critics. A performance held by the SES

during 1879 was to raise money for a widow named Mrs O’Meara. Her late husband Morgan had been the drill instructor for the Bendigo Rifles, he having held the rank of Sergeant Major. Mr O’Meara had first become the drill instructor back in 1860, prior to which, according to the Bendigo Independent, had also been instructing the Bendigo Greys. Prior to his drill instructing role with the Victorian Volunteers he had served for 13 years in the British 87th Regiment known as the Connaught Rangers. He was in India during the mutiny and engaged in action. Upon the mutiny being quelled he had applied for and received his discharge, then he came to Victoria and settled. In 19th century terms Mr O’Meara was considered to be a “gentleman”, which meant that he had independent means and from a technical point of view did not need to work for a living. However, he dabbled in many different activities to keep his money active. Upon the floating of the Adelaide Gully Quartz Mining Company in 1865, shares for which were subscribed in a day, Mr O’Meara took out 100. During the gold mining company boom in 1871 he was also busily buying shares, 500 in the Pride of the Garden Gully Company and 1000 in the Garden Gully Old Chum Tribute Company that operated at Sheepshead.

Waterfront Duncan McNab Hachette Australia, $32.99

P

TALENTED: E McGuinness. During 1872 Mr O’Meara subscribed to 250 shares in the Royal Albert United Gold Mining at Garden Gully near Long Gully. From the Melbourne Leader we learn that he had selected 256 acres of land in the Parish of Wharparilla, not far from Echuca. A report stated that he had complied with every condition except that of residency, however through ill health he resigned from the position of drill instructor of the Bendigo Rifles and moved on to his farming property in 1875. Just prior to his passing on June 11, 1876 he had been presented with a beautiful silver mounted emu egg and a purse of gold sovereigns from the Bendigo Rifles members to show their appreciation for his instruction.

OINT a police detective turned investigative journalist in the direction of Australia’s docklands and the material unearthed is likely to make for a juicy – if not entirely family-friendly – dossier. That’s precisely what Duncan McNab has produced in Waterfront, a thoroughly researched examination of 200plus years of “graft, corruption and violence”, as he terms it, in and around the country’s major ports. McNab’s carefully chronicled history begins with the opportunistic pilfering of supplies from the newly landed British First Fleet and interweaves politics, socioeconomics and conflicting community ethics into a storyline populated by prostitutes, sly-groggers, assassins, drug runners and standover men. Names made familiar most recently by the various Underbelly TV series are scattered throughout the text: Kate Leigh, Norm Bruhn, Tilly Devine and the Kanes. Waterfront at times veers away from the shoreline and into the inner-suburban underworlds of Sydney and Melbourne, putting into context dealings in some manner linked to the painters, dockers and waterside

labourers of each era as the maritime mobsters’ tentacles stretch inland from what McNab refers to as “Australia’s crime frontier”. The book doubles as a history of the union movement across the two centuries since colonisation, tracing at the same time the establishment of distinct political parties as the country now knows them and detailing a tradition of parliamentary manoeuvring, undermining and deceit dating from the very earliest days of federation. It also records the arrival of diseases imported unintentionally by sea – smallpox, Spanish flu, the much-feared plague – and reports the wholesale human evictions carried out by governments spooked by these epidemics. While its focus is primarily wharf-related, Waterfront is not merely for readers with an active interest in ships. Rich with picket lines, scab labour, doubledealing, backbench infighting, opium hazes, royal commissions and more than one clichéd drunken sailor, McNab’s book is every bit as entertaining as it is informative. – Rosalea Ryan

Quilt’s link to history T

HEY say history never repeats – however 120 years later, descendants of signatories of the Heritage Signature Quilt have returned to Bendigo to sign a patch for a new quilt for the Aspire Foundation. Lois Lowe, Virginia Rae and David Cordy are all descendants of Jane Stewart, an original signatory of the quilt and their great grandmother. Dr Rae, who travelled from America to Sacred Heart Cathedral to look at the quilt, said it was by chance that they found the connection to Ms Stewart. “This is definitely an important destination, because our forebears were here on the goldfields, and our great grandmother was a signatory on the quilt,” Dr Rae said. “It’s very moving. My sister had done a lot of family research and we unearthed the fact that this existed and discovered that one of the names was indeed our great grandmother. “A lot of descendents of the quilt probably have no idea it exists, we stumbled across it because Lois and I, on a previous trip of mine, went to the old St James Church and looked at the records of our great grandparents. “It was an archivist in one of the churches – she saw we were interested and said ‘perhaps you have descendents on this Bendigo quilt’.”

Ms Stewart was a publican who owned the Harp and Shamrock Hotel, located on the corner of Hargreaves and Mundy Streets, and the wife of a gold miner. Ms Lowe said she uncovered a significant amount about her great grandmother when researching the quilt and the family’s history on the goldfields. “We really checked the records to make sure that this Jane Stewart was our great grandmother, and we found newspaper articles naming her from the time as being the licensee of the Harp and Shamrock Hotel,” she said.

“And we even searched the location of the Harp and Shamrock. Originally we thought it was on Bull Street, but we searched the library and it clearly showed that (the hotel) was on Hargreaves Street.” Her research uncovered more than just the quilt and the location of the hotel. “(Jane’s husband) was a gold miner and found a nugget of gold,” Ms Lowe said. “He was in a syndicate of four who had been looking for gold for two years, getting nowhere. “As he walked out of the mine, he kicked a rock, picked it

up and it was a nugget. “We think this enabled Jane to go into the hotel business.” The original quilt was embroidered in 1895 and donated to the Strathdale Quilters in 2003. It features 270 signatures, and after restoring the quilt to its former glory the Quilters donated it to the Aspire Foundation. Dr Rae said they had bought a patch to sign for the new quilt. “My sister and I purchased a square on the new quilt. It seemed important enough to keep the tradition. A little part of history,” she said. – Laura Hurley

T

HE tradition of the nude in art is alive and well under the auspices of Bendigo Artists Incorporated. Several central Victorian artists this year have been attending life drawing classes with the benefit of models. The essential benefit of life drawing is that it teaches the artist to really see the object they are drawing, to notice the detail, rather than drawing what they imagine is in front of them. As well the human figure offers all the complexities of angles

and forms an artist needs to learn in order to be able to draw any subject. The several artists in the life drawing classes are at different levels of expertise but all have benefited from mastering the art of figure drawing. An exhibition of these life drawings is being held at Reveries Gallery, 40 Indigofera Road, Marong. Exhibition hours are from 1pm to 4pm Saturday and Sunday until November 29th. (Or by appointment) The artwork is for sale. For further details contact patrickthwaites@bigpond. com

EFORE spending big dollars on the latest heating and cooling appliances to keep you comfortable in your home, have your insulation evaluated and possibly upgrade your insulation for sustainable comfort all year round. Is your ceiling insulated with blow-in insulation commonly used 20 to 30 years ago? If so, chances are you would benefit from a new joint service offered by two locally owned companies Gutter-Vac and Flat Batts. In just one day Gutter-Vac’s Adam Isaacs and Flat Batts’ Mark Mitchell can have your home or business more comfortable no matter what the season, warmer in winter, cooler in summer. “The older style blow-in insulation is not really very effective at keeping heat in or out,” Adam said, while explaining that Gutter-Vac can quickly remove any old inefficient installation before Mark from

Flat Batts installs industry compliant, high performance insulation. “By increasing the R value (thermal rating) of your ceiling insulation, your heating and cooling appliances are engaged less therefore decreasing the amount of energy you use, which in turn puts more money in your pocket,” Mark said. Gutter-Vac’s industrial vacuum is also ideal for a variety of cleaning jobs around the home, office or factory including keeping your gutters clear. It can also be used for water tanks and chimney cleans, in fact it can be used for a range of extraction jobs including industrial cleanups. Keep in mind the fire season is on us so make sure your gutters are cleaned now. Both Gutter-Vac’s and Flat Batt’s services are backed up with a satisfaction guarantee. To speak to Adam about Gutter-Vac phone 0419 097 779 or phone Mark from Flat Batts on 0432 172 351.

UYING blinds and awnings directly from Brian Wellington ensures that you will have your installation done for free, enabling you to make a huge saving. With 30 years’ experience in the industry, Brian is able to offer a full service in central Victoria to home owners or builders. He can install new blinds, do repairs and replacement on all window products. Brian says he is fortunate to be an authorised re-seller of the Ziptrak® Track Guided Blind System. The product development of the outdoor Ziptrak® system allows you to use your valuable family patio area 12 months of the year insulating against

the elements, including unwanted insects, mozzies and flys. The beauty of this system is that it also connects the indoors to the outdoors. With the patented Ziptrak® balanced spring system it is as simple as pulling the blind down either full length or stopping at any point. There are no gaps down the sides, no zips, cords, ropes or wires. It can also be used to replace the old automatic arm awnings to cover most window styles. For a free measure and quote either on site or off the plan Brian is just a call away. Contact Brian on 0418 506 542 or like him on facebook.

Pioneers head to AFL BENDIGO Pioneers Tom Cole and Aidyn Johnson had their AFL dreams realised on Tuesday night, when the duo were selected in the AFL’s 2015 national draft. The standout duo were selected at picks 36 and 45 respectively, with Cole headed to West Coast and Johnson to the club he grew up supporting, Port Adelaide. The Pios have more live chances in today’s rookie and preseason drafts, with Lachlan Tardrew, Marty Hore and Jayden Burke all chances to be picked up. Cole caught up with the Weekly on Monday, and said he did not mind going interstate to follow his dream. “It’s my dream to play AFL. I don’t care what number or where I go, I just want it to happen. I’ll be happy to go interstate, wherever, but I just want that dream to come true,” he said. Adding to the excitement for Cole was the fact that not only did he have the draft on Tuesday night, but also his year 12 graduation dinner from Catholic College Bendigo. The draft was displayed live on a big screen at the ceremony and Cole’s selection was met with raucous applause. Pioneers teammate Burke is

AWARD: Bendigo Tennis has its eye on the ball.

GOODMAN RETURNS BENDIGO Lady Braves coach Jonathan Goodman will return for a fourth season in charge, the club announced this week. Goodman has led the Lady Braves to the playoffs in his previous three seasons, finishing as conference finallists the past two seasons and making the SEABL final in 2013. “I’m happy to be on board again. We have made inroads over the last three years; we have had success but not the ultimate success. I’m really looking forward to developing the program further,” Goodman said.

UP TO THE CHALLENGE

HOPEFUL: Jayden Burke and Tom Cole chat pre-draft. Photo: ANDREW PERRYMAN in line to possibly be picked up on Friday, after a strong TAC Cup campaign and a good VFL performance with Geelong late in the season. He said his expectations going into the week were not too high. “It’s been my dream ever since

I could pick up a footy really,” he said. “That’d be ideal to have my name called out, but my expectations aren’t that high. I’d love it if something did happen obviously but I’m just going to wait and see. “If it doesn’t happen, it isn’t

the end of the world. There are plenty of different avenues to get there. “It would be great to see some of the boys picked up, they’ve worked super hard and watching that pay off would be really satisfying.”

Win for Bendigo tennis THE Bendigo Tennis Association took out another national award this week, winning top prize in Most Outstanding Australian Ranking Tournament category at Tennis Australia’s Newcombe Medal night. The awards ceremony was held at Crown in Melbourne, with the BTA nominated yet again and claiming the title on the back of the Bendigo Bank Junior Tour and Australian Money Tournament. The Most Outstanding Australian Ranking Tournament is selected from an Australian Money Tournament or Optus Junior Tour event.

Tennis Australia says the recipient of the award will have offered a complete package of on-and offcourt activities and player amenities to a high standard, allowing for a positive tournament atmosphere, and implemented strategies to engage local sponsors, media attention and community involvement. “It is not just about honouring Australia’s most outstanding tennis player, the awards are about recognising and celebrating the exceptional accomplishments around the country,” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said.

BENDIGO has been announced as the host of hockey’s G.J. Gardner Homes Zone Challenge event thanks to an agreement between Hockey Victoria, the City of Greater Bendigo and Hockey Central Victoria. Bendigo will host the event in 2015 and 2016 at the newly redeveloped Bendigo Hockey Centre at Garden Gully, with the 2015 event set for this weekend. “By bringing more hockey events to regional Victoria we plan to grow our sport, bringing it to existing participants and attracting a few new ones along the way,” Hockey Victoria CEO Andrew Skillern said.

WICKET WINNER A RARE feat was achieved by Bendigo Cricket Club quick Jotham Higgs last weekend, when he took all 10 wickets against White Hills. Higgs finished with the remarkable figures of 10/31 from 16.2 overs including five maidens. The cricketing oddity came after three consecutive weeks of hat tricks in the BDCA’s first XI competition.

Cox sets sights on Rio By JOEL PETERSON

LA TROBE University Bendigo student and shooting ace Emma Cox has her sights set on the 2016 Rio Olympics, and is well on target to get there. The 23-year-old from Mooroopna is based in Bendigo while she studies education at La Trobe, and has a few busy months ahead as she competes in qualification tournaments before next year’s games. Cox is ranked number one in the country and heads into key events in January and March full of confidence after two stellar years, including

competing at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She had to change from shooting double trap to single this year, as double trap is not an Olympic event, but has made the transition seamlessly. “Last year I shot double trap in Glasgow and Spain (at the World Grand Prix),” she said. “In double trap, two targets are released at the same time, and the athlete has one shot at each target. “Because the trap event was always on the day after the Double Trap event at Australian Cups, I always stayed on

and had a shot in the event for a bit of fun.” That bit of fun has proved to pay serious dividends for Cox, who, despite not training for the event, made it into the international trap team for 2015. This year alone, she won gold in three out of four Australian Cups and came away with a bronze medal in the other, as well as adding a National Championships silver medal early in the year. “I was so happy to place third in my first international event,” Cox said. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to go at all because

two months earlier I had dislocated my left ankle on a camping trip, right before competing in the nationals. “It was really challenging to even walk on my ankle let alone compete at the nationals in Newcastle, or in Cyprus.” While she is full of selfbelief after some strong recent results – including a bronze medal shoot-off against world number one Fatima Galvez at another event in Cyprus – she knows qualifying will be a huge challenge. Cox is in Sydney this week defending her Oceania Championships title, and starting her campaign in earnest.

“Next year I have two chances to gain selection into the Olympic team – one in Brisbane in January and one in

Sydney in March,” she said. It’s definitely exciting to think there is a chance I could go.”

Spirit out for revenge THE Bendigo Spirit is out to avenge a horror earlyseason loss to Adelaide on Sunday, when the two sides meet in round eight of the Women’s National Basketball League. Bendigo was beaten by the then-winless Lightning in round four in the first matchup between the teams this season. That weekend Bendigo had played in Perth the night prior and is far better prepared this time, according to coach Simon Pritchard. “We are definitely more prepared, but they have added Kayla Standish which makes it a bit of

a different challenge,” he said. “They basically have three Americans now, so from my perspective that makes them different and harder to guard but we are much better prepared and playing better basketball.” Bendigo had a mixed lot last weekend, being embarrassed by Melbourne to the tune of 20 points on Saturday night before a bounce-back win over Dandenong on Sunday. Bendigo prevailed over the Rangers 63-49 in what Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson described as “an ugly game”, but Simon

Pritchard is happy for his side to win by any means necessary. “We are a blue collar team, we should make no apologies about that and that’s how we should be winning, like we did on Sunday,” he said. “We want to pride ourselves on working hard to get our results. I’m perfectly happy for us to win when things aren’t necessarily pretty.” Another positive for Bendigo out of Sunday was Kelsey Griffin’s Australian citizenship ceremony that took place post-game. Mayor Rod Fyffe, council CEO Craig Niemann

and federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters were all in attendance at the ceremony, which saw a beaming Griffin sworn in as Australian for the first time. One key for Bendigo heading into this weekend is keeping Kelly Wilson involved on offence. The Australian Opals guard played an important role in the win over Dandenong, scoring 16 points, but more importantly staying aggressive throughout the contest, something Pritchard is looking for more of. Bendigo’s clash with Adelaide tips off at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

BIG hitting has been the feature of the week in the EVCA with runs plundered by several batsmen in division one and bash for cash action. Sedgwick skipper Rick Ladson posted the biggest score of the weekend, smashing 185 as the Rams posted a huge total of 6/453 to record a huge win over Axe Creek. Ladson smacked 13 sixes in his mammoth innings, and was well supported by Matt Dwyer (82) and Zac Poole (80) as the visitors destroyed the Axe Creek attack for a fraction more than six runs per over. Joel Bish bore the brunt of the damage, his four overs going for 56 runs, while Nick Skeen’s 11 overs went for 79 runs and Mitch CutterRabl’s two overs went for 20. Greg Burns took 2/95 from 16 overs to be the only multiple wicket taker. Maiden Gully continued its recent good form to vault into the top-four after an outright win over West Bendigo. After making 242 on day one, Gully dismissed the Redbacks for 87 in the first innings behind four wickets from Brett Haw before rolling them for 115 in the second dig. Haw and Craig Burn both finished with six wickets for the match, while Dallas Gill took two wickets and added two runouts and a catch in a superb day in the field. At Marong Links Oval, Panthers opener Scott Ross blasted 103 to lead the hosts to a convincing victory over Spring Gully. The home side was assisted by

35 Gully extras, including a massive 17 no-balls, but also got solid contributions out of Jeremy Ross, Adam Brown and Andrew Gladstone, who all topped 30. Liam Crapper was the Crows’ best bowler with three wickets Mandurang’s vaunted batting lineup had a day out against Golden Gully, belting 9/316 from its 75 overs to easily chase down 203. Mathew Pask was destroyer in chief for the Rangas, smashing 110 off just 91 balls including 12 fours and three sixes. Matt Giri got the innings off to a flying start, making 64 of the 79 runs scored by the hosts while he was at the crease, before Pask finished the job off with relative ease. United completed a comfortable win over Emu Creek in the round’s other match. Travis O’Connell had the highlight of the night in Tuesday’s bash for cash competition, smashing 116 in West Bendigo’s win over Golden Gully. The one great oddity in West Bendigo’s innings didn’t come with the bat, however it was Paul Barber’s sole over with the ball. Barber’s over contained eight wides and went for 37 runs, to get the Redbacks’ innings off to a flying start. Ladson followed his huge with an unbeaten 71 as Sedgwick defeated Axe Creek on Tuesday night in the EVCA’s Bash for Cash competition. In other games, Marong defeated United and Mandurang downed Spring Gully by one run in a thrilling finish.

PIONEERS’ DRAFT WIN p37

www.bendigoweekly.com.au

PRO boxing action his Bendigo for the first time in a decade last Saturday, when the Battle on the Goldfields was staged at the Bendigo Stadium. Several local fighters were in action, including Damien Lock, Matt Hall and Brad Morgan, who all recorded debut victories. Morgan was named the fighter of the night after a first round knockout win. Bendigo’s Justin Whitehead was outclassed by American man mountain Julius Long in the night’s main event, the 216cm giant proving too big and too strong for the former Commonwealth games representative.
